Visionary Leadership Or Change: The choice before Abians in 2019 gubernatorial elections

Abia State voters must be careful not to acquiesce to the same predicament London-based The Economist magazine (which endorsed President Buhari) and Nigerians yielded to in 2015 when they were beguiled by a candidate who came with promises of change without requisite visionary leadership needed for socio-economic renaissance. There is no doubt that many Abians are vexed with godfathersim dynasties-grip since the restoration of democracy in 1999. Many are only interested in shredding every vestige of godfatherism without taking the realities of the incumbent, Gov Dr Okezie Victor Ikpeazu (OVI) who from all indications has severed linkages to his predecessor who has never exerted control like we have in states like Lagos, where the governor is a pawn in the hands of the Capo D Tutti (apropos Gov Amosun’s recent pronouncement).

Abia State ThisDay Midterm 2017 Report

In review of a midterm report by ThisDay in 2017, I noted the following. That ThisDay newspaper used 5 indicators to grade two years performances of governors from least to most desirable scale: Non-starter, go back to drawing board (very poor); Work in progress, no clear results (poor); Good vision, slow start (average); Clear vision, promising start (good); good vision, flying start (very good). The newspaper reported that Abia State governor was bogged down by legal impediments, which he later won at the Supreme Court and has made progress in certain areas like infrastructure. It awarded the overall score of “Work in progress, no clear results to the governor’s two years in power. Despite efforts targeted at revitalizing and boosting shoes and garment SMEs in Aba and attraction of $1.5billion Chinese investments towards construction of an industrial city. I proposed that Abia state should stop taking the last position when it comes to development in the South East. An airport, a standard stadium where Enyimba the most successful club in Nigeria in intercontinental football in Africa can play, investment in electrification projects to generate power for the state to boost industry and provision of real estate are areas that a visionary governor should harness.

Governance Philosophy of Gov Okezie Ikpeazu

The preceding paragraph was written in 2017 and quoted almost verbatim. Fast forward to the present day, the governor has made tremendous progress in almost all the areas highlighted except building an airport. The Enyimba stadium has a hybrid pitch for elite club football, SMEs are getting serious attention from the state government, the state’s education for employment (E for E) initiative is a success and Aba is being developed into an industrial hub amid an infrastructure renewal. OVI’s governance philosophy takes root in what he opines as “socio-cultural sentiments of development strategy based on five developmental pillars of governance: agriculture, commerce, industry, oil & gas and education pivoted on seven enablers namely: ease of doing business, infrastructure, healthcare, housing, security, media & advocacy and education.

The governor describes his ideology of public sector governance as a ‘research-based government’ where information gleaned from available socio-economic data is strategically utilized to properly focus on the most important areas that impact the most on the progress of the state. (The construction of feeder/alternate routes to substitute for dilapidated FG roads linking Abia State to other states is an example.)  This approach to governance is the sine qua non in knowledge-based societies in the developed world “conditioned by national, regional and local policies, programmes and actions, as well as informed decision-making by individual citizens, families and other societal units.

The Journey So Far

The ultimate question every discerning mind would ask is: to what extent has OVI achieved his vision? On education, model schools have been established and the homegrown free school-feeding programme extended to primary 3-6 while the FG caters from primaries 1-3. This boosted school enrolment by over 500% from about 140,000 to 640,000 within 3 years. This is massive progress in education.  Agriculture has bolstered with the establishment of poultry clusters across the state, planting of over 2 million palm seedlings, and increase in cashew production.

RELATED: Nigeria’s army wants you to know, they have no problems killing civilians

The focus on Aba as an economic city must be viewed from a broad economic perspective. The feasible vision of the governor of “Making Abia The Premier Business Destination In Nigeria, And West Africa lies in development of Aba as an economic hub linking adjoining states and regions. If there no other lessons from the past four years, most people have realized that states should innovate and expand their IGR (moved IGR from N500m to over N2bn) to make up for allocation shortfalls to offset wage bills and improve development efforts. The development of Aba as the epicentre of Abia State economy is the most pragmatic route to economic independence.  Even Dr Alex Oti recognises this in his manifesto. OVI’s focus on Aba has made #MadeInAba trendy and is increasing brand awareness and acceptance. The revitalization of the collapsed Aba infrastructure is strategic and his government has made significant progress. The revolution in training and equipping Aba Shoemakers with vocational skills and equipment is on going. The government have trained 30 shoemakers in China and is building a manufacturing complex, partnering with Chinese partners, Bank of Industry and Ministry of Labour to enable SMEs to thrive.

With Aba as a bustling trade and manufacturing hub, Abia State can fully reduce its dependence on federal government allocations and have adequate funds to embark on much needed development. Building roads, proving pipe borne water, housing and ensuring food security are basic elements of development but substantial societal advancement has only been realized through industrial revolutions. Let’s imagine that the shoemakers in Aba control 50% of the shoe market in Nigeria and West Africa. This is the kind of foresight, which justifies the governor’s prioritization of development of Aba.

Abians must not be seduced and stampeded into the trap of creative destruction bamboozled by jejune arguments and flowery words of Alex Otti and Uche Ogah both of who have never held governance positions at state or federal government. A prerequisite, which is necessary for nuanced and functional governance because governance is serious business. The choice of Alex Otti for instance would mean a foray into an era of an inexperienced governor, which will create a period of chaos and stagnation most likely to bring about an ineffective government.  Abians must not condone political brinkmanship from political bigwigs bent on scavenging on the state treasury.

Survey of Abia Voters

Random survey of voters in Aba in a recent visit (October 2018) show that approval rating of OVI has improved from where it was in 2015. It can be located within 60-70%. Over 70% of people respondents adjudged his government the best so far since 1999 in every ramification and most important for being visionary and strategic towards the development of the state. Randomly, many voters expressed their sentiments towards the OVI main contenders in euphemism saying; “the devil they know is better than the angel they don’t know. Most voters advanced that desperation of OVI’s contenders is a drawback on their ambitions and given that they have expanded fortunes in litigations to challenge OVI’s victory, they would spend the next four years recouping all they have spent. This would result in thwarting of OVI’s vision, which is currently on course.

Vote for Continuity

In conclusion, Abia State voters are sophisticated enough to understand that change doesn’t always result to progress and the intimidating profiles of OVI’s contenders are not better than his profile as a PhD holder. If ThisDay were to carry out a pre-4-year term report today, I am convinced they will award Governor Okezie Ikpeazu “Clear vision, promising start (good)â€. Furthermore, I came across an article by Chinedu Ekeke on ynaija.com, a frontline stentorian promoter of Dr Alex Otti (APGA), OVI’s main contender, where he queried that Chief TA Orji administration (2007-2015) could not boast of roads constructed or any meaningful development while challenging OVI’s candidacy in 2015 but today, such a question has a resounding response from the incumbent governor and his supporters who have a plethora of projects and achievements to flaunt. Therefore, it is in the best interest of Abians to vote continuity to enable OVI consolidate on his visionary leadership for the good of the people of Abia State.

Alkali’s Murder: Community Leaders, Clerics Initially Shielded Killers – Lalong

Lalong, and journallist,

ABUJA – Plateau State Governor, Simon Lalong on Tuesday, poured out his grievances against community leaders in his state, including clerics  whom he indicted played indirect roles in shielding those responsible for the murder of Major Gen Idris Alkali.

He attributed the occasional breakdown of law and order in the state to such tendencies, noting that it was disheartening that the same people craving for peace aided and abet crime by hiding the killers.

In the case of Gen Alkali, Lalong said if the community heads had exposed the crime earlier, the situation wouldn’t have degenerated to its current state.

The governor made these remarks shortly after he accompanied members of the Church of Christ in Nigeria (COCIN) to the Presidential Villa to meet with President Muhammadu Buhari.

It will be recalled that Alkali was declared missing on his way to Bauchi after leaving Abuja in the morning of September 3, prompting the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai to set up an operation to search for him.

While the search lasted, the car with which the late General was travelling in was found in a pond in Jos South Local Government Area. His remains which were initially buried in a grave was later exhumed and thrown into a well when the Army intensified their search.

He bared his mind while fielding questions from State House correspondents regarding his efforts at maintaining peace in the state.

His words, “The people of Plateau are making complaints as everybody has a right to make complaints but as far as the government is a concerned in Plateau, we have done a lot and gone far with some of the issues that were raised.

“The only one that put us back was the killing of the General. And I have also charged community leaders just like Mr. President said, I said if you want to ensure peace in your place, community leaders must also come out and expose criminals in their domain.

“But when you commit crime and community leaders or religious leaders fight to protect them that give room for problems.

“If they had exposed the killers of Alkali earlier, everything would have been solved. But there you have community and religious leaders who claimed to be religious, who claimed to be religious leaders hiding criminals.

“They might not like me but that is what I am doing, I have said that yes you want the government to work, but if I catch you or get any criminal activities in your domain, we will hold the community leader, religious responsible. We cannot claim to live in a community and we don’t know the criminals or those who are the good people in such an environment.

“So we are doing our best. Even when they were doing investigation people were shouting but I insisted that this investigation must be done to the latter, they must investigate and find out those who killed the General and other people that were slaughtered on that road.

“By this, they are beginning to expose the reason for some of the crisis. And I always appeal that in a society like Plateau, we must learn to live together. It is not by chance that people were born in or outside Plateau, God brought us together and so if we want peace we must embrace each other and we must also give an opportunity for people to come and live in our state.

How Bobrisky became an unlikely female style icon

How Bobrisky became an unlikely female style icon

She has finally come into her own and is living her best life. Here's how Bobrisky's daily beauty and style updates have made her an icon.

The evolution of Bobrisky has been incredible to witness. From a shamed criminal to a popular LGBTQA and pop culture figure. Recently choosing to identify as a woman, Bobrisky has been killing it in the style stakes. Here's how Bobrisky became an unlikely female style icon.

Bobrisky and her mysterious 'bae' captured a moment in Nigeria's pop culture history. The funny, charming and controversial Bobrisky was a regular on blogs and her Snapchat channel amassed hundreds of thousand so followers as people clamoured to for a front row seat to Bob's daily life.

However, behind the fun lay something far more profound. Bobrisky was an openly queer (former) man who had managed to win the hearts of the people in an openly homophobic and bigoted society. What may have begun as a morbid fascination for most Nigerians quickly turned into a genuine affection as Bobrisky continued to regale us with tales of the elusive, wealthy 'bae'. Whether 'bae' ever existed remains to be seen but it helped endear her to a nation.

Her time in the spotlight, the unwavering support from famous friends and the general outpouring of support from fans has helped Bobrisky slowly transform into her true self. What started with dabbling with makeup, wearing heels and jewellery has ended up with Bobrisky officially asking to be referred to with female pronouns. In a country where simply being gay attracts a jail sentence of 14 years, Bobrisky has become an unlikely beacon of light for the LGBTQA movement and prompted a conversation on transgenderism and gender identity in Nigeria.

In the meantime, Bobrisky is truly living her best life. Since coming out, she has fully embraced her newfound female identity and become the most unlikeliest of style icons. Bobrisky certainly doesn't do anything by halves. The entertaining snapchatter changes her her hair every week and despite claiming to rarely leave the house, has a seemingly never-ending wardrobe.

Though she has had her controversial moments, Bobrisky has proved herself to be a generous and caring person. Recently, she reached out to James Obialor , the HIV positive student who was part of the group rounded up and accused of homosexuality by the Nigerian Police force. Bobrisky gave James money and promised to continue to help him financially with his mounting medical costs.

In honour of Bobrisky, we have put together a style reel that shows how her style has evolved and how she has become and unlikely style icon and truly transformed into the Barbie doll she always wanted to be.

On ‘The Bar Therapy,’ Adetutu OJ talks bullying, motherhood and the moment Rihanna followed her on Instagram

On social media, Adetutu OJ is one of the best viral sensations of 2018, for the simple fact that she was bearing an aesthetic that has slid to the point of rarity: tribal marks. Having recreated her own version of a Rihanna photo last month, her crusade to model for the international pop star under Fenty took the internet by storm. It was indeed a compelling viral moment but Adetutu’s backstory is far from beautiful. “I was bullied for having tribal marks at school,â€ Adetutu says to Oscar Oyinsan on the recent episode of The Bar Room Therapy, “They said I was ugly and all sorts and even though I tried to make them my friends by writing their notes and doing assignments for them, it didn’t work.â€

Adetutu got pregnant in 2009 and it came with shame and stigma, right into the delivery of her baby. On top of that, the father of her child dissociated himself from her because of her tribal marks. For me, this was the point in the interview I found a little stunning. Even Oscar cocked his head and said, “Didn’t he see that you had tribal marks before dating?â€ and to which she said with a small aloofness in her tone: “He said I didn’t look like the typical girl.â€

Now Adetutu loves single parenting, her 9-year-old daughter the love of her life. Facebook kickstarted her fame in 2016, posting pictures of herself flaunting her tribal marks and the positive comments that ensued from random people. A particular account was reported for bullying her and Facebook clamped down on it. With enough zeal and determination, Adetutu reached towards Twitter. Then Instagram. Hello Rihanna. “How did you feel that night knowing Rihanna was now following you?â€ Oscar seemed genuinely curious, pouring her orange juice. For a moment, Adetutu is emotionally flustered, unable to form words. “I kept looking at my phone over and over to see if she was still following me. I couldn’t believe it.â€

According to her, Rihanna is yet to sign her onto a modelling contract for Fenty, but Adetutu is very hopeful about the future. She will be thirty this month, an advocate for preserving culture and tradition but maintains that parents should seek consent from their children before scarring their faces with tribal marks. The episode wraps up with some motivations words from her: “Don’t wait for anyone to tell you are beautiful. Love yourself and be bold.â€

Just In: Ike Ekweremadu, son, wife escape assasination attempt

An unidentified gunman has been arrested by the police on Tuesday in Abuja after invading the residence of the Deputy President of the Senate, Ike Ekweremadu.

Ekweremadu’s Special Adviser on Medi, Uche Anichukwu disclosed this in a statement.

“The Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, his wife, and son escaped an assassination attempt at about 4 am on Tuesday.

“One of the armed men discreetly evaded the security at Ekweremadu’s Apo Quarters residence, to gain entry into his house.

“The attackers, who could not immediately shoot in order not to attract the attention of the security personnel on duty, took hold of his son and commanded him to lead them the Senator’s bedroom.

“It was at the Senator’s bedroom that a struggle ensued, leading to the arrest of one of the assailants with dangerous weapons and housebreaking devices, while the rest managed to escape.

“The arrested member of the gang has, however, refused to divulge any information on the operation and has been handed over to the police.

“Ekweremadu, his wife, and one of his sons were in the house at the time of the attack.

“It could be recalled that the lawmaker narrowly escaped an attempt on his life in Abuja on November 17, 2015.

“Although the 2015 incident was reported to the security agencies, nothing has been heard about the matter till date.

Senator Dino Melaye (Kogi West) also said Tuesday, that there were plans to assassinate Ike Ekweremadu at “about 4 am this morning” (Tuesday).

4 Reasons why NLC suspended Minimum Wage strike

4 Reasons why NLC called off Minimum Wage strike

Here are 4 reasons why NLC suspended its planned strike over minimum wage.

A nationwide strike which the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) had slated to kick off on November 6, 2018, has been suspended.

Labour had threatened to embark on the strike over a new national minimum wage for workers in the public and private sectors.

Nigeria’s minimum wage is currently pegged at N18,000. Labour wants it reviewed to N30,000, but the federal government is only willing to pay the sum of N24,000.

Here are four reasons why the strike was suspended:

1. The tripartite committee has concluded its work

Labour says it had to suspend the strike because the tripartite committee comprising organised private sector, federal government and labour has now concluded its assignment.

NLC President, Ayuba Wabba, told the media after a late night meeting on Monday, November 5, that the report of the meeting of the tripartite committee will be submitted to President Buhari on Tuesday, November 6.

2. A deal has been agreed in principle

Wabba says: “The report (of the meeting) will be submitted to Mr. President today and therefore, having reached this position, the organised Labour also decided that the proposed strike is hereby suspended.

ALSO READ: This is what 'Minimum Wage' in Nigeria really means

“Therefore, we thought this should be communicated appropriately without also divulging this information as mutual agreement has been reached.

That means there’s now an agreement in place between labour and government.

3. President Buhari will announce the new minimum wage

When President Buhari receives the report from the committee, he will thereafter tell the nation what the new minimum wage will be.

“We are going to present our report to Mr President today at 4:15pm and he will reveal the figure that we have recommended, says Ms Amma People, Chairman of the tripartite committee.

4. Government says it will honour its part of the agreement

Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Boss Mustapha, told the press that: “I am confident that government will give expeditious consideration of the report when submitted to Mr. President. And very soon the processes will be put in place to truly actualise your recommendations so that the status of our working populace will be enhanced and they would receive appropriate and commensurate payments for the services they offer to our nation and to the different sectors of our economy.

Relief for Nigerians as Labour suspends strike

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Federal Government yesterday succeeded in averting what could have been a complete lockdown of the economy over the disagreement on minimum wage for workers.

The protracted negotiation between the government and the workers’ representatives saved the day, leading to the suspension
of a nationwide strike that would have begun at midnight today. At 10.30 p.m, there were unconfirmed reports that airport workers union had already announced stoppage of international flights.

Led by the NLC President Ayuba Wabba, the organized Labour had insisted on a N30,000 minimum wage workers in the country as against government’s N24,000.

But Ayuba last night announced a suspension of the proposed action after the workers got what looked like a concession from the government team led by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Boss Mustapha. Although Wabba could not
divulge the agreed amount, he said the work of the tripartite committee had been concluded and that the report would be submitted to President Muhammadu Buhari at 4.15 pm today (Tuesday).

Asked to disclose the amount agreed upon by the tripartite committee, Wabba said: “The figure will be released when we submit the report tomorrow (today).

Nigerians yesterday were caught up in panic buying as they anticipated the industrial action by the organised labour.

A visit to some filling stations in the Abuja metropolis showed many motorists to buy fuel. were also filled with customers making last-minute transactions, while automated teller machines were long queues. One motorist, Bamidele Olukoya, who spoke to The Guardian, said he bought enough fuel to last a week. Reminded that the move could be dangerous, he replied: “I kept the gallons in my backyard.

In Ibadan, residents swooped on markets to purchase food and other essential items. At Bodija market, a civil servant, Mary Okoisi, told The Guardian she was ready for the strike, as she had stocked up enough food.

But not everyone shared Okoisi’s view. Some, like Mr Kehinde Odewunmi, a builder, would rather the strike didn’t take place. He added that if government ac-cedes to labour’s demand, there would be inflation and a worsening of the economy. He was joined by Chinyere Nwafor, who urged the government to boost the economy and bring down prices of goods instead of increasing
workers’ salaries.

The organised labour yesterday held a prolonged meeting at Mustapha’s office. But as at 10:00 p.m., there had been no consensus on the contentious N30,000 minimum wage demanded by the workers’ unions. At a point, the governor of Kebbi State, Bagudu Abubakar, who was the sole governor that attended the meeting, stormed out at exactly 7.42 p.m., declining to speak to reporters.

The Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, said the invitation extended to the state governors was a mere opportunity to be a part of the negotiation process and not to influence proceedings.

He said: “Government is one. The state governments have no choice but to follow what the Federal Government wants. We have agreed on two figures of N24,000 and N30,000 to be submitted to Mr President for onward transmission to the Council of State and the National Assembly for the legislative process.

The Guardian learnt that the organised labour insisted on obtaining a definite date for the submission of the report to President Buhari before suspending the strike.

Mustapha explained that the president had closed for the day and had gone home. He added that the president might likely come down-stairs later in the evening. This necessitated a two-hour adjournment.

Anambra Govt, Anglican Church Disagree Over School Seizure, Church Closure

Nnewi – There seems to be no end in sight in the face-off between the Anambra State government and the Diocese on the Niger Onitsha Anglican Communion over an alleged seizure of Bishop Crowther Memorial Primary School, Onitsha.

Anglicans on Sunday, in solidarity with their priests, who went to Awka to protest against the government action, trouped out in large numbers to conduct church service with original members of the disputed church near the disputed land in the presence of security operatives and insisted that the land belongs to them.

Rev. Jonah Onwuzurigbo and the parish priest, Rev. Ifeanyichukwu Azubuike, were enraged by the government action, insisting that they would not relent in agitation for their land and school to be given back to them.

They also condemned the closure of their church, describing it as a sacrilege.

Nnamdi Ibegbu, the chancellor of Anglican diocese of the Niger Onitsha, told Daily independent that the land in dispute belongs to the diocese as they are in possession of necessary documents.

Former Governor of the state, Peter, Obi who said that the school belongs to the Anglican church, wondered why the present administration is meddling on the land.
