Senate Probes Claim Govt Intervention Fund Spent On Buhari’s Re-Election

The Senate has ordered an investigation into an allegation that a government special intervention project fund meant for ordinary Nigerians is now being used as a campaign tool for the re-election of President Muhammadu Buhari.

Senate Minority Leader, Biodun Olujimi, said on Wednesday that the fund had been “politicised and its beneficiaries were asked to submit details of their permanent voter’s cards.

For over thirty minutes, the Senate plenary became chaotic after Mrs Olujimi made the allegation.

She said officials disbursing the fund are circulating forms on which recipients are asked to write their names, gender and details of their PVCs.

She said the such forms are accompanied by another from Access Bank containing details of payment.

Displaying the two forms, Mrs Olujimi urged the Senate to investigate the matter.

“Right now the funds are being used for political reasons and they are being dispensed and given freely to those people who can bring up their PVCs and signed several copies and the forms are with me, she said.

“One of the forms is here with me and it is being disbursed by the special intervention body. They are now using the fund that is meant for all Nigerians for political reasons.

She said raising one of the forms: “This one has ‘I stand with Buhari’ on it and it has a place where your PVC will be written with your gender and an attachment from Access Bank where money will be disbursed to you.

“There is no corruption greater than people using our collective fund to maintain a political party. There is a need for a committee to be set up to look into this issue.

First to show intention of speaking was the Senate Leader, Ahmed Lawan, who was promptly shouted down by opposition senators.

The chamber was soon thrown into confusion as both camps — ruling and opposition lawmakers — argued with senators move around the chamber.

“Tinubu has seen you, opposition senators chanted at some APC senators, referring to the former Lagos governor and influential APC leader, Bola Tinubu.

Mr Lawan was finally given time to speak. He said the social intervention programme of this administration is “computer-based, very transparent….

He was again cut short by senators who booed him. “They have seen you, they have seen you, some lawmakers shouted.

Again, the chamber was thrown into another spell of rowdiness.

In a speech intermittently interrupted by yelling, Mr Lawan praised the SIP as a non-partisan initiative while showing support for investigation of Mrs Olujimi’s allegation.

The lawmakers finally adopted Mrs Olujimi’s prayer.

The Senate President, Bukola Saraki, said an ad-hoc committee will be set up to investigate the allegation.

Popular Nigerian Gay rights activist, Bisi Alimi, has written a note addressed to straight Nigerian LGBT allies who end up being offensive while trying to show their support for the prescribed community.

READ: ‘My Activism Is Personal, I Owe You Nothing’ – Popular Nigerian Homosexual Bisi Alimi Tells Nigerian LGBT Community

Posting his note on his Facebook page, Alimi who recently celebrated his wedding anniversary with his partner addressed a number of misconceptions surrounding homosexuality, while letting those who show support for LGBT causes know that most of their approach causes more harm than good.

In his note titled,’Dear straight allies and friends, we need to talk’, Alimi said that being gay wasn’t a choice and as such, people who supported them shouldn’t say they ‘made a choice’ to be gay because it’s a harmful thing to say, even he knows they mean well.

Lagos Guber: Sanwo-Olu Will Emerge Victorious – Akintelure

One-time deputy governorship candidate to Ondo State governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, on the platform of Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) and former governorship aspirant of All Progressives Congress (APC), in the last governorship election in Ondo State, Dr. Paul Akintelure, has maintained that Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Lagos State APC standard bearer for next year’s governorship, will emerge victorious.

What is your take on state of the nation?
Nigerians are preparing for the 2019 general elections, so everybody is looking forward to new leaders emerging in some cases and politicians are jostling for elective offices. That has created some kind of tension which ordinarily ought not to be. More so, politicians are just defecting at will, thereby ignoring party ideologies for parochial interest. That also is heightening tension in the area of security, economy and others in the country.

Do you think Sanwo-Olu has the capacity to defeat Jimi Agbaje of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), given that he is contesting for the first time unlike his opponent who Lagosians already know?
Yes. I don’t have any doubt in my mind that Babajide Sanwo-Olu will defeat his opponents at the poll. PDP or other party candidates cannot match ours. Lagosians will always cast their votes for APC because it has the track record of good governance.

In the past, other state governors and their officials visited Lagos to inquire about our infrastructure development successes with a view to replicating same in theirs. Residents of Lagos know the party and individuals to vote for on the day of election.

But some see Sanwo-Olu as a product of imposition, won’t that affect his chances?
Nobody imposed him on the party that I can confidently tell you as an insider. Sanwo-Olu is the choice of the people. He was chosen by the masses, majority of which are party members who believe that he has listening hears and capable of meeting their aspirations in line with the vision of the good governance policy of the state.

Do you think that Sanwo-Olu will carry stakeholders in the state along, including non-indigenes as his predecessors did?
He is everybody’s friend. I know that all the stakeholders will enjoy his government because he is a detribalised and non-discriminatory gentleman. He once headed an agency of government where he gave everybody equal opportunity irrespective of tribe and religious background. So I believe he will run an all inclusive administration when voted for as governor.

How does he intend to sustain the vision, legacy and excellence of his predecessors?
Sanwo-Olu is a man of excellence. He is creative and dogged in his quest to succeed. In fact, due to his knack to achieve positive result, Governor Ambode having spotted the gift had appointed him to head Lagos State Property Development Corporation (LSPDC),to assist in achieving the developmental goals of his administration and he gave a good account of himself.

Rivers State has overtaken Lagos in investment destination, according to a recent report by National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) what is your take on that?
Well, that can be attributable to infrastructure deficiency. I assure you that Sanwo-Olu will address that when he becomes governor. In any case, a serious minded and profit-oriented organisation and investor should know that Lagos is the place to be. Infrastructure, security, population, market, among others, are better in Lagos and as such return on investment is higher and quicker.

Do you have any fear ahead of 2019 general election?
No. There is nothing to worry about. The election will come and go. Nothing negative will happen. It is just that some of our religious leaders are creating unnecessary hypes. They are dishing out all manner of prophesies that are frightening the people, thereby causing anxiety in the land and heating up the polity.

What is your advice to the electorate and to Sanwo-Olu in case he wins the gubernatorial election in Lagos?
I enjoin electorate to shun vote buying .Involvement in such act is capable of throwing up the wrong candidate, because when such a person occupies the position of authority, he will not consider the people’s interest, but that of his and cronies. They should vote for credible candidates that are capable of delivering dividends of democracy to their communities. Furthermore, they should not just vote for any party, but should consider some individuals on their merit. This is because most people are no longer following party ideologies; rather they want to fulfil their parochial interests as they defect from one party to the other.

Sanwo-Olu on his part should know that Lagosians expect much from him. So he should not ignore the stakeholders and their wishes, particularly his party members who have considered him for this position. Lastly, he should try to diversify the economy of the state with a view to generating more revenue for the state. He can embark on agriculture, particularly, livestock farming. He can explore available lands in the state for the project. For instance, large expanse of lands at Badagry, Ikorodu and others can serve. Besides, he should construct more road networks within the grassroots so that rural dwellers can feel the impact of his government.

US institute denies predicting 2019 election outcome

The United States Institute of Peace has said it never predicted the outcome of Nigeria’s 2019 general election.

It said that the report which was misinterpreted is a report of a thorough study based on the interviews conducted by the institute across the country with more than 200 Nigerian respondents.

USIP in its statement said, “the institute’s work on elections is confined to helping nations avoid electoral violence.”

It also stated that “it never makes predictions on election outcomes, and has not done such in this case.”

The inaccurate news accounts is a misinterpretation of USIP’s recent report on the “risks to a peaceful 2019 election in Nigeria.

The USIP report noted that, in the interviews, “some respondents discussed their own views of Nigerian public perceptions about an election outcome.

A few of the country’s dailies had reported erroneously earlier this week that the USIP has made a prediction about the possible outcome of Nigeria’s 2019 presidential election.

The news platforms reported that the Institute said that President Muhammadu Buhari may win the 2019 election.

However, USIP strongly holds firm that it is “a strictly nonpartisan institution” and it only focuses on preventing violence during elections.

Sports: Meet 20-year-old Tenshin Nasukawa, Floyd Mayweather's next opponent who loves anime, aliens, and Harry Potter

Boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. of the U.S. poses for a photograph with his opponent Tenshin Nasukawa during a news conference in Tokyo

Tenshin Nasukawa is a rising star in Rizin, but after booking a fight with Floyd Mayweather he is now known around the world. But who is he, exactly?

Tenshin Nasukawa may well be the most interesting 20-year-old in combat sports.

Last week, Nasukawa was a relatively obscure fighter, globally-speaking. Though he is a rising star in Japanese mixed martial arts, he competes in the Rizin Fighting Federation, a promotion that is only three years old and receives little press in the US and the UK.

But what a difference a few days makes. Nasukawa has been thrust into the media spotlight as Rizin made a stunning announcement — the company's phenom will fight the unbeaten American boxer Floyd Mayweather in a bout with undetermined rules, at an undecided weight, on December 31 in Japan.

Despite his young age, Nasukawa is already an accomplished competitor with an unblemished processional record.

If his kickboxing record of 27-0 (20 wins by knockout), and his mixed martial arts record of 4-0 (two wins by knockout, and one by submission), are indicative of his promise, his impressive stoppage wins over the former IBF boxing world champion Amnat Ruenroeng and the former Muay Thai champion Wanchalong PK Senchaigym are testament to his talent-level.

His Instagram profile, which has 225,000 followers, suggests there's more to the fighter than a strong record, though.

Here's everything you need to know about Nasukawa, the fight game's newest star.

This is Tenshin Nasukawa. Born in 1998, Nasukawa grew to become a young boy with a fascination for aliens, anime, and for fighting. He has a black belt in the Kyokushin style of karate and is an expert kickboxer to boot.

Source: Instagram, and BBC.

Nasukawa began his combat sports journey when he started practicing karate at five years old. Before he turned professional, he had an amateur kickboxing record of 99 wins against five losses and one draw. Even more impressive, he beat prominent Muay Thai champion Wanchalong PK Senchaigym while he was still a student in high school. For many, this was when a new legend was born.

Source: MixedMartialArts.com and YouTube.

Nasukawa is a big fan of cartoons, specifically those from Japan. He grew up on anime, and likes shows like "One Piece," "Naruto," and "Hajime no Ippo" (pictured below), a Japanese manga series focusing on a student who begins a career in boxing, beating up multiple opponents and winning many championships. Nasukawa himself competed in over 100 fights before he had even left high school, so it could be just a matter of time before he is immortalised in an anime or manga series of his own.

Source: Instagram and BBC.

Nasukawa is renowned for his flashy fighting style. He has a standing stance not too dissimilar to the ones adopted by Ryu or Ken in the smash hit video game series "Street Fighter," and some of his power strikes are just as eye-catching as he uses "rolling thunder" kicks and "wheel kicks."

Source: Instagram and Mindsmash.

If watching him shadow-box was not hypnotic enough, he is even more spell-binding when he is in full flow, in the middle of the ring, against world-level opponents. Here, Nasukawa stops a former world champion boxer — the aforementioned Ruenroeng — in a kickboxing fight in 2017. His finishing blow was a rib-piercing bodyshot.

Source: Twitter.

He has many interests away from the ring, and enjoys playing guitar…

Source: Instagram.

…and fishing.

Source: Instagram.

An interview in 2017, Nasukawa said he'd want to be a cockroach if he could be any animal in the world because "their ability to survive is extremely high." He also admitted that he is most afraid of ghosts because they are "freaky as h-ll," and his most embarrassing moment was when he "confessed" to his crush. His successes in the ring presumably outnumber his embarrassments away from it, though.

Source: MixedMartialArts.com and Instagram.

Nasukawa's Instagram account reveals a few people he appears to idolise. There's "Ultraman," a cybernetic superhero who protects Earth from an alien invasion in the Japanese tokusatsu science fiction television series of the same name…

Source: Instagram.

…there's his "hero" Neymar, the superstar soccer player who competes for Paris Saint-Germain and the Brazil national team…

Source: Instagram.

… and, of course, there's Floyd Mayweather. When Nasukawa was 14, he was watching attentively when the American overcame an early onslaught, to outpoint 2014 opponent Marcos Maidana in a 12-round brawl at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

Source: Instagram.

Perhaps Nasukawa always dreamed of landing a big fight against someone like Mayweather, and will get his shot next month when he competes against the 41-year-old in front of 37,000 fans at the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama City, north of Tokyo.

Source: Instagram.

The age difference between Nasukawa, who is 20, and Mayweather, who turns 42 in February, is vast. To put it in context, Mayweather had already won an Olympic medal and was training to take part in his first professional world title fight before Nasukawa had even been born. Mayweather, boxing's first billionaire with ambitions of buying an NBA team, is fighting a kid half his age who takes videos in the bath using a Harry Potter filter.

Source: Business Insider, Business Insider, and Instagram.

The fight was announced at a Rizin Fighting Federation press conference earlier this month, and stunned the combat sports industry because of how surprising it was. "The biggest event in my life has become reality," Nasukawa said. "I think that everyone is surprised, but I am the same."

He added: "I have punches of timing that boxers do not have. The [weight] class is also different, but it does not matter to me now. I will do KO for the first time that nobody could do in the world. I will change the world with my own fist."

Source: Instagram.

Though the rules are yet to be decided, Nasukawa is confident of victory. "I'll absolutely win," he said.

Source: Instagram.

Only time will tell if Nasukawa, who has only tasted success as a professional athlete, will be the one celebrating after the Mayweather bout.

Source: Instagram.

ASUU strike paralyses academic activities in UNIBEN

ASUUAS the strike action embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) enters its third day, academic activities at the University of Benin (UNIBEN) in the Edo State capital have been paralysed.

A Correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) who monitored the compliance level and the effect of the strike on lecturers and students in Benin on Wednesday observed that the institution was unusually empty, as only a few persons were around the campus.

The institution’s ASUU chairman, Prof Julius Iyasele, who spoke with NAN, said that government’s insensitivity to the plight of Nigerians and public tertiary institutions in the country prompted the strike.

Iyasele disclosed that other reasons for the strike were the under-development of tertiary institutions, the revitalisation of the country’s education system, insecurity in the country, as well as the non-implementation of a previous agreement reached between the union and the federal government.

He stressed that the government, after reaching an agreement with the union, later reneged, adding that the union was now prepared to implement the Ghana model of not returning to work until the government does the needful.

The UNIBEN ASUU chairman said that in most countries of the world today, tertiary education was free, as education was a public good and the pivot of every developing nation.

ALSO READ: Construction of $134m Ibadan Dry Port set to commence

“But here in Nigeria, we see a situation where the government wants to take education beyond the reach of the common man.

“The UNESCO budgetary standard for education is 26 per cent, but in Nigeria, we have moved from nine per cent in 2011 to six per cent, and we are saying no, we cannot continue like this.

“The government wants public universities pauperised so that private universities can flourish because most of them in government are proprietors of private universities.

“For instance, Dr Wale Babalakin, the leader of the government negotiating team is building a private university; that is why he is fixated that government can’t fund tertiary institutions, and that is why ASUU is saying that Babalakin must step down as a representative of the government,’’ he said.

He, however, said that it was sad that government’s insensitivity was causing a setback to students and parents, adding that clearance for new students for the new academic session ought to have commenced on Monday at UNIBEN.

“But we have directed all the students to go home, and they have gone home.’’

Meanwhile, Mr Sunday Ogheneyore, a 400-level Economics and Statistics student at the institution has lamented the ongoing strike.

According to him, “I am supposed to be doing my project work, but I can’t do that now due to the strike. The irony is that I don’t even know when it would be called off.

“As it is now, I don’t know whether to go get a job somewhere and be working first or not,’’ he noted.

Similarly, Miss Jacinta Ikediuwa, another student of the institution, said it was sad that the government was playing politics with the education and the future of her youth.

ASUU announced an indefinite nationwide strike on Monday over the non-implementation of its memorandum of Action (MOA) signed with the Federal Government.

The association’s National President, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, said the strike would involve all federal and state-owned institutions.

There was no delay in Police intervention in the incident that occurred in the residence of the DSP. 4 Police personnel and 1 personnel of the NSCDC on duty at the residence of the DSP at the time of the incidence have been arrested and currently in detention for investigation.”

But in plenary today, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe cited Orders 42 & 52, bringing the attention of the Senate to the investigations of the Nigerian Police and attracted the reaction of Ekweremadu who said, “I want to thank you all for your concern in this matter. No thorough investigations were made by the police. I was shocked to hear that they had said it was a mere burglary case. My son, who was hospitalized, was not even interviewed by the police.

The police looked at the CCTV footage but could not figure it out. Fortunately, a technician came and was able to figure out the footage. Unless they withdraw their report, I will release the video to Nigerians to judge for themselves.”
