Bauchi – The Bauchi State Government has refuted allegation that the All Progressive Congress (APC) has no governorship candidate in Bauchi state ahead of the 2019 general election, saying it never made use of state apparatus to write the results of the primaries.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on political matters, Honourable Kawu Labaran in a statement made available to newsmen in Bauchi, explained that the state government was compelled to react the text of a press conference jointly addressed on Wednesday, 7th of November 2018 by Alhaji Ibrahim Yakubu Lame and Alhaji Bala Jibrin, saying that the duo are yet to come to reality that power comes from God.

The statement said since the conduct of the state APC primaries that saw the emergence of Governor Mohammed Abubakar as the flag bearer of the party ahead of the 2019 general elections, Lame and Jibrin who lost their bid to take the gubernatorial ticket, have been running from pillar to post to upturn the popular will of the party faithful.

He alleged that the duo were in Aso Rock Villa and was pointedly directed by the President to channel their grievances to the appropriate party leadership, adding that they were still not satisfied with the response of the president.

“It is not our intention to respond to all the frivolous allegations they made in their address to journalists because Bauchi State Government under the leadership of Governor  Abubakar strongly believes in constituted authority.

“According to existing laws, which the two kindergarten politicians appear not to have respect for, candidates duly nominated are submitted to INEC, the nation’s electoral umpire by the political parties.

“In the case of Bauchi State, the gubernatorial candidate who was duly nominated to fly APC’s flag in 2019 is Mohammed Abdullahi Abubakar and that has been fully acknowledged by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

“For the avoidance of doubt, some of the processes of the 2019 Bauchi gubernatorial primary election were dictated by the two politicians. They were the ones who insisted that direct primary election must be held even after the state party stakeholders had agreed on delegates’ election and had endorsed Governor Mohammed A. Abubakar and President Muhammadu Buhari.

“They also insisted that returning officers in the 20 Local Government Areas must be chairmen of Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT). Governor Abubakar also agreed. But when the results came out and they realized that they were not in touch with the voters and party members, they resorted to cheap blackmail with the sole aim of rocking the boat, the statement read.

The statement said that their plot has been exposed and the decision of who occupies the Bauchi state government house is solely that of the electorates whose life the administration of Governor Mohammed Abubakar has in the last three years touched positively in spite of failed attempts by serial elections losers to distract him.

The statement said the government is not surprised they have resorted to the gimmicks of 2014 when Alhaji Lame lost the gubernatorial ticket and left no stone unturned to discredit the incumbent governor who extended his hands of friendship then and even now.

It added that the gesture led to the appointment of Lame’s major allies and drivers of his campaign organization who were co-opted into the M. A. Abubakar campaign council and eventually into cabinet positions in his government.

“Their former principal fought a legal battle against the election of Governor Abubakar in the Supreme Court back in 2015 as the candidate. Mohammed Abubakar extended hands of friendship to Lame all in his bid to move Bauchi State forward.

“As governor, he still maintains that anyone having any contribution to the development of Bauchi state, including people who have dissenting viewpoints were welcome, so long as their criticisms are constructive and in the best interest of the state and the common man.

No impeachment process against Gov. Okorocha- Speaker

Rochas Okorocha

Dr Iheanacho Ihim, Speaker, Imo House of Assembly has said that there was no impeachment process against Gov. Rochas Okorocha.

Ihim, who made the clarification in a statement signed by Mr Marcel Ekwezuo, his Chief Press Secretary min Owerrin on Friday, said the governor had carried out his duties within the full provisions of the law.

He described as misleading, insinuations in some quarters that some members of the House had contemplated instituting impeachment process against the governor.

“His Excellency, Owelle Rochas Anayo Okorocha, has so far conducted himself and steered the administrative machinery of Imo within the most perceived and glaring ambits of the law.

“No member of the Imo House of Assembly has contemplated, even remotely, the misleading allegation of his impeachment charge,“ he said.

According to him, the impeachment procedure of any state Governor is a constitutional matter, but added that it is neither done surreptitiously nor stealthily.

“It is an act done in the open; and no member of the State Assembly has any knowledge of the fictitious and imaginary said impeachment procedure.

He condemned the originators of the news and enjoined the state government and the general public to disregard the allegations.

“It beats my imagination how an obscure and imaginary television station operating outside the shores of Imo state could be the harbinger of a story of such magnitude. There is a plethora of refined, reliable and reputable mass media in Imo.“

“Such fake news and other morally degenerate stories are the stock in trade of that lowly rated and generally unknown, non conventional television station.

“I enjoin the relevant publics and government of Imo to discountenance the falsehood of Gov. Okorocha’s alleged impeachment for what it is – a lie from the pit of hell.

Reps Task COREN On Aggressive Revenue Drive

ABUJA – Members of the House of Representatives Committee on Works, on Thursday, called on the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN), to double its drive for internally generated revenue (IGR) to attain financial independence from government as well as pay remittances.

The committee, led by Hon. Toby Okechukwu (PDP, Enugu),  its chairman, also challenged the council management to galvanise professional efforts aimed at facilitating the signing into law of the council’s establishment Act Amendment Bill recently passed by the National Assembly.

The members made the call at the council headquarters in Abuja during an oversight visit to assess the level of implementation of the council’s 2017 and 2018 appropriations.

Hon. Okechukwu in his remark told the council that the committee’s visit was in line with its constitutional responsibility of ensuring that COREN “is fit for purpose” with regard to its utilisation of appropriated funds.

While disclosing that the council Amendment Bill passed by the House had been concurred by the Senate, Okechukwu charged the council to tap into its membership resources to enable it get timely presidential assent.

He said the amendment if signed into law would ensure adequate autonomy and financial independence for the council as well as enable it to expand its nets toward regulating activities of both local and expatriate engineers and workmen coming into Nigeria.

“The relevance and importance of engineering is all encompassing given the fact that almost everything we use to aid life is engineered.

“You build a house, it’s all about engineering, ranging from the structure to the electrical and water connection all requires engineering inputs. Likewise cars that we drive and the road on which we drive are all products of engineering.

“So whichever way you look, engineering is one of the most important part of social and economic development by virtue of its creations.

“And I’m very optimistic that the Amendment Bill which has received concurrence from the Senate, if signed by the President would give more power and reach to the council in terms of its work and revenue generating capacity,” Okechukwu said.

Engr. Kamila Maliki, the Registrar of COREN, while commending the committee for standing by the council in its effort to achieve the amendment, informed members that the council has desired to advance its regulatory roles with a view to attaining the membership of the International Engineering Alliance (IEA).

He described the organisation as the “global elite club” of about 34 countries including the United States.

“The council was invited to the Alliance office in the U.S. for talks and a proposal to visit COREN in Nigeria to see how we operate,” Mr. Maliki said.

Briefing the committee on its budget performance for 2018, the Registrar who said he was on his way of the COREN given the impending expiration of his term told lawmakers that out of N648.5 million approved, only N190.2 million had been released as at September this year.

He disclosed that the council which generated the sum of N722.2 million was in deficit of over N2 million having exhausted its IGR on recurrent and overhead in the last one year, having remitted N30 million to government coffers.

The assertion alarmed the committee members, with the chairman querying the council for living above its means.

Okechukwu said: “The deficit status of the Council after paying N30 million remittances is a cause for concern. You ought to know how much you earn and how much is overhead cost before arriving at the percentage you can remit.

“And you also need to be clear if the percentage is as stated by law or based on guidelines because I’m not comfortable with a man who lives above his means,” he said.

Europa League: Arsenal, Chelsea Through To Last 32, Marseille Out

arsenal

Arsenal and Chelsea were among seven teams to reach the UEFA Europa League knockout stage on Thursday, while last year’s runners-up Olympique de Marseille were eliminated at the group phase.

The two English Premier League teams were joined by Eintracht Frankfurt, Lazio, Bayer Leverkusen, FC Zurich and Dinamo Zagreb in the last 32.

But there are two games still to play before the draw for the next round in Nyon, Switzerland on Dec. 17.

Arsenal qualified with a 0-0 draw against Sporting at The Emirates, although striker Danny Welbeck was carried off on a stretcher in the first half with a serious ankle injury.

Chelsea won 1-0 at BATE Borisov in one of the early kickoffs.

A heavily-changed Arsenal side were unable to break down a dogged Sporting team, who were reduced to 10 men in the 88th minute.

That was when defender Jeremy Mathieu fouled striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang as he raced towards the area.

However, the point was enough to guarantee the north London side a place in the last 32 atop Group E on 10 points, with Sporting behind them on seven.

Vorskla Poltava lost 1-0 to FK Qarabag, with both teams on three points.

Arsenal forward Welbeck was taken off on a stretcher and given oxygen in the 25th minute after landing awkwardly when jumping for a header.

The incident came only hours after he was named in the England squad for their next internationals.

Earlier, Chelsea’s France striker Giroud got his first goal this season in the second half to secure a win at BATE, meaning Maurizio Sarri’s side have qualified from Group L.

“I think the first target in this competition was to qualify and now the second target is to win our group. So, I think we need one more point, the Italian coach said.

“It’s very important because then we can talk again about this competition in February, when we will have another target.

Chelsea have yet to lose under Sarri so far this season.

Marseille were dumped out when they lost 2-1 at Lazio in Group H.

Goals from Marco Parolo and Joaquin Correa were enough to extend a miserable run for the French side, who have now lost four games in a row in all competitions.

Lazio, meanwhile, went through along with Eintracht who eliminated Apollon Limassol with a 3-2 victory in the other game in the section.

Leverkusen joined both teams in the next stage after beating FC Zurich 1-0 at home in Group A but thanks to Ludogorets 0-0 draw with AEK Larnaca the Swiss side also progressed.

Dinamo Zagreb beat Spartak Trnava 3-1 to qualify from Group D while Anderlecht, UEFA Cup winners in 1983, were eliminated after their 2-0 defeat by Fenerbahce in the same group.

Sevilla, the most successful team in the history of the competition with five titles, went down to 10-men at Akhisarspor but came away with a 3-2 win in Group J.

A late Ever Banega penalty kick ended the Turkish side’s qualifying hopes.

There was a goalfest in Russia as Spartak Moscow came from 3-2 behind to lead Rangers 4-3 in two minutes before the hour mark.

The home side’s eventual win took them to second place and level with their opponents on five points in Group G.

Rangers’ domestic rivals Celtic kept their hopes alive with a 2-1 win over RB Leipzig in Group B, while AC Milan and Real Betis took a step towards qualifying with a 1-1 draw in Group F.
