Nigeria Ranks 3rd Among 10 Countries With Preterm Birth Globally

Mrs Bagudu, who disclosed this on Friday in Abuja when the National Association of Nigerian Paediatric Nurses (NANPAN) paid advocacy visit on her, attributed the statistics to the latest data from the World Health Organisation (WHO).

Preterm birth also know as premature birth is the birth of baby at fewer than 37 weeks gestational age.

Mrs Bagudu, who frowned at the rating, lamented that a lot of preterm related death often occurred due to lack of sophisticated equipment that would ensure proper care for the babies.
She however noted that it was important and high time for the nation to rise up to its responsibilities by coming up with innovations and policies that would help in saving the lives of number of neonatal death.
“Prematurity is the leading cause of newborn death worldwide and if we can save some of these babies we will definitely record more economic impact in our country.
“The resources in terms of human and material that is expended on premature birth and babies dying every year is enormous and we can do something about it, she said.
Mrs Bagudu identified one of the easy ways to restore the lives and ensure better health for premature babies to include Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC), adding that it will enable the baby cuddle with mother in the absence of incubators.
According to her, if this care can be taken to the grassroots by educating mothers on how to effectively do it, it will go a long way in reducing the number of deaths associated with premature delivery.
Mrs Olubunmi Lawal, National President of the NANPAN, said the visit was aimed at soliciting the support of Mrs Bagudu on the association’s upcoming annual national conference slated for Nov. 13 to 17 in Enugu.
She emphasised that the conference was geared toward adopting modalities to ensure the survival of large number of premature babies.
According to her, it is also part of pre-event activities for the commemoration of the International Day of Preterm Birth billed for Nov. 17.
Lawal noted that part of the conference activities was for members of the association to engage policy makers as well as wives of governors to help improve, promote and protect the survival of premature babies.
“Premature babies are vulnerable hence we are here to pay advocacy visit on Her Excellency in order to promote the survival of preterm babies.
“We are also paying advocacy to tell the world that the association is significant when it comes to improving the survival of preterm babies and newborns as a whole.
“Preterm babies need a skillful care and if you are not trained on it you cannot do it effectively, Lawal said.

US mail bomb suspect indicted on 30 counts in New York

NEW YORK, NY – NOVEMBER 06: Police watch over the entrance to the Daniel Patrick Moynihan United States Courthouse ahead of the appearance by alleged mail bomber Cesar Sayoc in the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York on November 6, 2018 in New York City. Sayoc stands accused of sending pipe bombs to prominent Democrats and critics of President Donald J. Trump. Rick Loomis/Getty Images/AFP

US prosecutors in New York on Friday indicted the Florida man accused of sending pipe bombs to critics of Donald Trump with crimes that carry a maximum sentence of life in prison.

The 56-year-old, who lived in a van plastered with pro-Trump and anti-Democrat stickers before his October 26 arrest, was previously hit with a five-count complaint in the sunshine state.

The registered Republican, who has a criminal history and reported past as a stripper, was subsequently flown to New York and appeared in a Manhattan court earlier this week, before the 30-count indictment was unveiled.

Sayoc now stands accused of mailing 16 explosive devices, despite law enforcement officials previously alleging that he sent 11 critics of the US president a total of 13 different devices.

The charges include five counts of use of a weapon of mass destruction for each pipe bomb mailed to and intercepted in the New York area, targeting billionaire liberal donor George Soros, former Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, actor Robert de Niro, former CIA director John Brennan and former intelligence chief James Clapper.

Sayoc is charged five times with interstate transportation and receipt of explosives and five times with threatening interstate communications.

Allegedly included with the bombs were a print-out or photograph of his intended victim marked with a red X.

Sayoc was also charged five times with illegal mailing of explosives, five times with use of explosives to commit a felony and five times with use of a destructive device in furtherance of a crime of violence.

Outside the New York area, Sayoc is also accused of sending other pipe bombs to former president Barack Obama, former vice president Joe Biden and others.

The attempted bombings fanned tensions across the United States ahead of this week’s midterm elections, which saw Trump retain control of the Senate but the Democrats win the majority in the lower House of Representatives.

Buratai Encourages Troops, Says Boko Haram Highly Degraded, Expiring

The Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai, has urged troops in the North-East not to relent in the fight against the Boko Haram insurgents as the terrorists have been highly degraded and are expiring.

Buratai described the recent sporadic skirmishes from the Boko Haram terrorists as a desperate effort from a highly degraded and expiring adversary striving to maintain its notoriety.

In a goodwill message to troops in the frontline in the North-East on Friday, the chief of army staff said also that the recent skirmishes from the terrorists should be seen as an attempt by the group “to portray itself as formidable and cohesive; something that is completely false.

He, therefore, charged the troops not relent in their gallant efforts and draw back the hands of the clock.

“It is merely the last kicks of a dying horse. We have achieved great successes over the Boko Haram terrorists.

“Thus, absolute and conclusive victory is just inches away, he said.

According to Buratai, the Nigerian army is not known for cowardly behaviour.

We have contained several incursions and several security challenges bedeviling our dear country within the last three years and now would not be an exception.

He warned that any soldier that turned away in the face of enemy incursion would be appropriately sanctioned and made to face “Field Court Martial in accordance with our extant laws.

Buratai stressed that the consequences could be grave.

“Do not be complacent by being contented with repelling their attacks, instead, go after them, capture them, and when absolutely necessary, be decisive with the daring ones.

“Some women and children have been held captive, you are therefore to ensure that adequate rules of engagement are employed to extricate them before any offensive action, the army chief said.

He assured the troops that as their chief of army staff, he had never relented in his pursuits of ensuring that their welfare was adequately catered for.

“To this end, I have directed that your allowances are paid regularly as and when due.

“I have also directed that troops’ rotation be carried out as scheduled. As soldiers in battle, I am aware of the effects of battle fatigue.

“Consequently, I have also directed that passes be issued to officers and soldiers that require same to visit their families.

“Recall that I approved the special promotion of more than 5000 troops for gallantry.

“Be rest assured that the process is continuous. Your kitting has also been improved drastically, he added.

Buratai recalled that special uniform allowance was paid a month ago directly into the troops’ individual accounts.

He said through the various intervention programmes to the army by the government, the stock of arms and ammunition had greatly improved.

He said recently, the army took delivery of large consignment of high calibre weapons and ammunition which were already being injected into the theatre.

“I, therefore, urge you to make use of them judiciously and ensure that they are effectively used against the terrorists and not taken away by them.

Buratai also noted that in a bid to swell their depleting ranks, the terrorists had continued with their false teachings and instilling fake ideologies in the youths of the North-East.

To curb this, he said, he had directed the Department of Civil Military Affairs in collaboration with the Department of Nigerian Army Chaplain/Imam Services “to immediately provide counter narratives through the community resilience and stabilisation campaign programme.

“I have also established the Nigerian Army Cyber Warfare Command to among others, prevent online terrorism, online radicalisation as well as online recruitment.

“To this end, do not let the false propaganda and narratives being spread by the rag-tagged terrorists sway your thoughts and actions about our dear country.

“We should continue to stand and fight even when the going gets tough and the ignorant and enemies of the state choose to castigate us, he said.

The chief of army staff reminded the troops that many people had returned to their respective communities that were hitherto abandoned, but that the terrorists had taken advantage of the large population in the towns and villages to infiltrate them.

“You must, therefore, be extra vigilant and establish good civil military relations with the locals.

“You are to use this to acquire actionable intelligence to prevent any attack on the communities as well as your positions, he said.

He thanked Nigerians from all walks of life for their support, prayers, encouragement and goodwill toward the Nigerian army in the service of “our fatherland.

“I wish to also convey my appreciation to you all, the troops, for your selfless service toward the defence of our dear country.

“Your courage and gallant demonstration of our core values of sacrifice and selflessness amidst the daunting challenges being confronted daily in the theatre speak volumes of your professionalism and patriotism to the Nigerian State.

“I implore you to continue to uphold the trust the nation has placed on your noble shoulders for the maintenance of the sanctity of her territorial integrity. We must all remain steadfast.

“We must see this victory to a conclusive end.

“We must justify our oath of allegiance to our fatherland and dedication to her sovereignty.

“I once again salute your courage and wish you the best of successes out there, Buratai added.

Hoodlums invade Ondo Assembly as speaker, deputy sacked

[FILE PHOTO] Ondo Assembly

Hoodlums took over the Ondo State House of Assembly on Friday following the removal from office of Speaker Bamidele Oloyelogun and his Deputy, Ogundeji Iroji.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the hoodlums humiliated lawmakers, staff and journalists as they had a field day in spite of the heavy presence of security personnel.

Oloyelogun, representing Ifedore Constituency, and Ogundeji, representing Odigbo Constituency II, were removed by two-third majority of the assembly amid rancour.

The two lawmakers were said to have been impeached over alleged “gross misconduct and incompetence.

Meanwhile, Olamide George, representing Akure North Constituency, was elected as the new Speaker and Abimbola Fajolu, representing Ile Oluji/Oke Igbo, as the new Deputy Speaker by that removed the two principal officers.

Fatai Olotu, a member of the group and representing the Akoko North East, told journalists that both men had been sworn in.

However, the impeached speaker, who later held a plenary with his group shortly after the hoodlums chased away the new faction, said he remained the speaker of the Assembly as their impeachment did not follow due process.

Oleyelogun urged his supporters and people of the state to remain calm and be law-abiding, insisting that the impeachment would not stand.

He said the newly elected speaker and 15 other members of the assembly had been suspended for ‘unruly conduct’ and that the assembly activities had been adjourned indefinitely.

The Late 5: INEC excludes APC from list of 67 candidates for Imo governorship; BMO rubbishes Atiku’s N33,000 minimum wage claim | Other top stories

These are the stories that drove the conversation today:

The crisis rocking the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Imo may cost the party its quest to retain the governorship of the state as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has failed to publish the name of any governorship candidate for the party in the state.

As reported by Punch on Friday, he commission published at its office in Owerri, names of 67 governorship candidates contesting the 2019 gubernatorial election, their political parties alongside their particulars with that of the APC not reflected in the list, sparking speculations that the issue of its candidate which is being contested in court may be responsible for the omission.

The party leadership favoured the Senator Hope Uzodimma, representing Imo west as it governorship candidate for the state, but the governor, Rochas Okorocha, is rooting for  his son-in-law, Uche Nwosu, for the same position.

The Buhari Media Organization has dismissed claims by the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar that he would pay N33,000 minimum wage to staff under his employment, describing the promise as another attempt to hoodwink Nigerians.

In a statement by its Chairman and Secretary, the BMO said that the claim came at a time that some of Atiku’s former workers went public with revelations of unpaid wages and severance benefits as well as unfair labour practices, while questioning the staff strength of his conglomerate which they claimed he has increased from 50,000 to 100,000 within a few week.

“Not even Dangote Group which is the largest conglomerate in West Africa has the number of staff these people claim to be on Atiku’s payroll,â€ the statement read in part.

The Academic Staff Union Of Universities (ASUU), on Friday said the proposal by the Federal Government to release N20 billion to public owned unviersities in the country, falls short of its agreement to release N220 billion yearly since 2013.

ASUU President, Professor Biodun Ogunyemi who stated this during an interview on Channels Television, described the development as too late, as well as too little, while restating the reiterated the union’s stance that it would not return to the negotiating table with the current head of the Federal Government’s re-negotiating team, Wale Babalakin.

“What government ought to have done was to release N220 billion each year. So when we asked for that, the government said that to prove that we have not abandoned that MoU, We will release N20bn as a mark of commitment and that was to be done between September and October last year. So, if we are discussing it in November 2018, it is coming too late, the ASUU leader said.

Director General of the Voice of Nigeria (VON) and a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) , Osita Okechukwu, has asked the party National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole, to resign honourably instead of pontification, grandstanding and running away from the country.

Addressing a press conference at the national secretariat of the party in Abuja on Thursday, Okechukwu an aggrieved Senatorial aspirant in Enugu said Oshiomhole’s exit will save the save the President Buhari and the APC defeat on the eve of 2019 crucial general election as well as the serious moral burden his reported interrogation by the Department of State Security Services had imposed on it.

“One personally would not want the mud Comrade Oshiomhole had accumulated via gross breach of the Constitution of the APC, the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and extant laws to be splashed on neither our great party nor Present Muhammadu Buhari,” he said.

The Ondo House of Assembly on Friday impeached its Speaker, Bamidele Oloyelogun, and his deputy, Iroju Ogundeji, a move the lawmakers said was aimed at correcting certain lapses in House, including misconduct, and not at witch-hunting anyone.

As reported by NAN, 18 out of the 26 members of the House carried out the impeachment in a rowdy plenary session, though policemen were stationed around the premises to forestall any breakdown of law and order.

The house subsequently elected Hon. Olamide George representing Akure North Constituency and  Hon. Abimbola Fajolu represnting Ile Oluji/Okeigbo Constituency as the new Speaker and Deputy Speaker respectively.

Jo Johnson has quit as transport minister and called for the public to have a fresh say on Brexit. (BBC)

The two frontrunners to succeed Chancellor Angela Merkel as Christian Democrat (CDU) leader pitched for the support of women in the party on Friday after polling showed that views of Germany’s first female chancellor differed markedly by gender. (Reuters)

Austria has a launched a probe into a colonel suspected of spying for Russia for several decades, Chancellor Sebastian Kurz said Friday, the latest in a string of cases where Moscow has been accused of espionage in EU states. (AFP)

At least 20 people have been killed and 17 wounded in explosions followed by heavy gunfire in Somalia’s capital, Mogadishu, according to police. (Al Jazeera)

Ethnic Bigot Lesser Evil Than Divisive Religious One, Sani Tells El-Rufai

In apparent continuation of the open confrontation between himself and the Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, Senator Shehu Sani, the legislator representing Kaduna Central in the Senate, on Friday replied the governor who had earlier described Mr. Peter Obi, the vice presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) as tribal bigot, saying an ethnic bigot is a lesser evil than a divisively religious one.

Governor El-Rufai had stated this on Friday via a post on Twitter.

Although, he did not expressly state what provoked the statement, he also accused the former Governor of Anambra State of being behind his detention by the Department of State Service (DSS) in 2014.

He said he eventually sued the DSS and was awarded N4 million in damages.

El-Rufai expressed his grievance via a tweet that read: “Peter Obi is a tribal bigot. He was widely quoted on national television that the SSS was right to detain me for 48 hours in an hotel in 2014 on the grounds that ‘El-Rufai has no business being in Anambra State as it is not Katsina State’! I sued the SSS and awarded N4m damages.”

However, in apparent reference to Governor El-Rufai, Senator Sani, while posting on his Twitter handle @ShehuSani, said “an ethnic bigot is a lesser evil than a divisively religious one.
