What is wrong with us?

“The Parliament is the title of a programme produced by Silver Bird Radio 93.7 Rhythm FM in Jos every Friday morning at 9.00am. it s a hilarious comedy which mimics the Nigerian Senate with David King as the mock Senate president, Brabisco, Osama, Terso, Pam, Maduka and Ajalenkoko as Senators respectively. Today’s episode got me thinking. The discussion was the reduction in cost of JAMB and NECO examination fees, and the increase in salaries of the Police by the Federal government.

The plenary was rowdy and thunderous as Senators argued rashly along political lines. That was a reflection of how Nigerians reacted to the issue in most public forums. Why would the President reduce Jamb and NECO fees and increase Police salaries now that elections are at the corner? Some say it was for political reason; others argued it was a deliberate action to galvanize votes for the President and the All Progressive Congress Party in the coming elections. The opposition Peoples Democratic Party saw it as outright rigging of the elections in advance. Those were argument that greeted the announcement and I asked, what is wrong with us?

ALSO READ: Watch your attitude

Many of us are good at exasperating our President. We are masters at demotivating the ambitious, frustrating the industrious, and demoralizing our leaders. Nigerians, which have long struggled with governance issues, are in urgent need of mental reorientation and transformation to be able to overcome the multiple challenges and explore opportunities that lie ahead on our path to growth and development.

The focus of President Muhammadu Buhari’s government is to bring change that reflect the ideals most Nigerians hold dear; mutual respect and understanding among peoples, economic growth and prosperity that is shared by all; and inclusion, transparency and accountability in management of public affairs. It is in line with these noble ideals that the government effects the reduction in JAMB and NECO fees and also increase salaries of Police.

President Buhari and his mode of governance are targeted at impacting public policies on the welfare of citizens throughout the length and breadth of the country. The School feeding, N-Power, Traders Money programmes are all aimed at enhancing the welfare of indigent Nigerians. The President promised change and he is determine to deliver the desired change and even poised to take it to the next level.

PMB is providing a model of how to be a reformist leader in today’s highly complex world. He is therefore applying policy solutions that maximize beneficial outcomes for the greatest number of Nigerians. In his inaugural address, he said “I belong to nobody, and I belong to everybody. It is a mantra he is prepared to live for without compromise.

Where Nigerians are gathered – two, three or in multiples, we are busy denigrating our country and government. We all seem to know exactly what is wrong with Nigeria. We are all experts at identifying our problems, but are too lazy to proffer sustainable solutions. What is wrong with Nigeria is precisely what is wrong with us as a people.

Now, we are singing a new song. It is titled “Restructuring. They blame the existing constitution as the cause of our constipation. We probably thought that the constitution we operate is the culprit and they, politicians are the victims. That is story for the gods. We are often quick to blame the constitution and forgetting that the status book on its own can only be as effective to the extent at which it is implemented.

First, we blamed the parliamentary model we inherited at independence. We abandoned it and rushed to America and borrowed its presidential model, and in satisfaction, we shouted eureka. We are very good at copy and paste. We planted the seed from America and were deluded in our rash thinking that it will translate to growth. We were damn wrong; the specie refused to germinate or grow out rightly. And if there was any kind of growth at all, it was a crooked growth.

Like Moses Rod in the land of Pharoh, the Whiteman’s presidential system was quickly swallowed by our twisted home grown model which has become the honey pot and cash cow for people in high places and cronies who managed by hook or crook to acquire political power. The vampires at the corridor of power and the few that seated on the throne are being cunningly clever. They manipulated with criminal oratory to remain relevant in any government in power. They are the shoddy politicians who have mastered the art of recycling to extreme perfection.

We ignored the fact that the constitution will not smile if institutions are not strengthened. When we cajoled and manipulated the systems for selfish interests in order to truncate justice, it never bothered us that such criminal act could be cancerous to the constitution. In our self deceit, we forgot that America’s presidential model still works for the Americans. We only adopted the nomenclature but left the “how it works aspect behind. We are being lazy or dubiously illusional.

If we will knock some senses into our heads, we will see the cause of our constipation here has been leadership – bad and selfish leadership without direction, focus and vision. Our leaders at all strata, politicians, armed forces, everybody in and out of office have been selfish – so selfish to the point of scandal and palpitations.

Nigerians do not care much to ask why things or rather the system worked well or relatively well for Nigerians in colonial times, and why is it that they are not working now that we are presumed free. The soul of our country is bleeding and all we do is play politics – dirty politics.

The problem with us is that we politicize every issues and policies in the country. The desired changed may continue to elude us if we continue in our negative line of thoughts against every government policies that is aimed at enhancing our progress as a nation. Yes, leadership may have failed us in time past, but we should begin to cultivate trust on our leaders and do constructive criticism that would constantly remind those in power of the onerous responsibilities bestowed on them.

Most importantly, we should have regards for our constitution and respect for each other as a people. It is imperative that we desist from any form of prejudice and abstain from flying fake news and rumours that is capable of destroying the fabric of our unity. It is better we live together in love and unity than to perish as fools.

President Buhari reduces cost of UTME, SSCE forms; ASUU vows not to suspend its strike | Other top stories of the week

These are the stories that drove conversation this week.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) vowed not to suspend its ongoing industrial strike action until its demands on poor funding of universities and government’s failure to adhere to previous agreements are met.

ASUU National President, Biodun Ogunyemi said, “…so far, nothing concrete has come out of the meetings; rather it is still a projection of their ‘keep-them talking’ culture.

In another over 3-hour meeting, however, Ogunyemi said another date has been scheduled for the continuation of the meeting.

More than eight days after the terrorist group, Boko Haram attacked a military camp in Metele,  President Muhammadu Buhari visited Borno.

After this, the president announced that he will be “convening a consultation of Heads of State and Government of the Lake Chad Basin Commission (LCBC) for November 29, 2018, in N’Djamena, Chad.

Then, in a statement released on behalf of the Chief of Army Staff, by Brigadier General Sani Kukasheka Usman, said, “one of the Nigerian battalions (157 TF Bn), deployed under the auspices of the MNJTFt was attacked at their base on the outskirts of a town called METELE on November 18, 2018, during which the troops were forced to withdraw, resulting (as at Wednesday) in the death of 23 personnel while 31 personnel were wounded in action and have been evacuated to several medical hospitals within Borno.

President Buhari went against the position of the leadership of his party saying that anyone displeased with the method anything has been done and feels deprived of his/her rights, is at liberty to approach the courts for redress.

The president said, “We can’t deliberately deny people of their rights. We agreed that party primaries should be conducted either through direct, indirect or consensus methods, and if anyone feels unjustly treated in the process, such a person can go to court. The court should always be the last resort for the dissatisfied. For the party to outlaw the court process is not acceptable to me.”

President Buhari approved an increase in the salary of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF).

Announcing this, Buhari said his administration will not renege on his promise to provide adequate welfare and operational needs to the NPF.

But there is a reason Policement might have been living off “rogers”; here is the answer.

Nigerian singer, Tekno’s management said in a statement that his vocal box is temporarily damaged – He is, therefore, taking some time out.

This sparked a conversation as to why other well-known singers have not suffered such.

But in a chat with Showtime, Tekno‘s road manager, John said, “It can happen; Wizkid, Davido and others are always on the move for shows around the world too but they have never recorded such because they don’t do live band like Tekno. Tekno performs with a live band in all his international shows and even some in Nigeria. Davido doesn’t even have a good vocal box and that’s why his voice sounds that way. Wizkid too can’t do high tempo music; it’s always mid-tempo songs. Tiwa Savage started professionally with good vocal coaches and all that, I’m sure that helps her a lot.â€

President Buhari reduced the cost of the forms for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME); Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) and Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

With this, the price of JAMB UTME will be reduced from N5,000 to N3,500, NECO will drop from N11,350 to N9,850. He, however, did not indicate how much the BECE form will be reduced to.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) said that it will keenly monitor the financial affairs of political parties to ensure that the use of public funds to finance political parties and prosecute campaigns at all levels of government is checked.

Speaking through his Chief of Staff, Acting Chairman of the EFCC, Ibrahim Magu said, “donations to political parties and the identities of the donors will henceforth be of massive interest to the Commission going forward.

“In addition, politicians prosecuting campaigns must be required to keep proper records of all donations received by them including the identities of the donors; and to turn their books over to relevant security agencies, and to INEC for inspection after every electioneering cycle, including the costs of litigations arising from the elections and the source of funding for the litigations.

Nigeria’s Federal Government told the United States to be cautious in granting a visa to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, so as not to create the impression that he is being endorsed for the 2019 election.

Information Minister, Lai Mohammed said that the federal government was aware that Atiku has engaged the services of some lobbyists to persuade the U.S. to issue a visa to him, noting however that the U.S. has the prerogative of granting a visa to anyone who applies.

Reacting to the development, spokesman for the PDP, Kola Ologbondiyan dismissed the comment as a “lazy talk, stressing that “Alhaji Lai Mohammed and the APC cannot dictate to America who to allow into their country. It is not in the place of Lai Mohammed to tell America who to admit and who not to admit into their country.

The Nigerian Police said that 104 bandits have been killed in a special anti-rustling operation conducted in Zamfara.

The police said 50 hideouts of the bandits were also destroyed and hundreds of stolen cattle and sheep recovered and handed to the owners.

One police officer was killed during the operation in Birnin Mogaji, Zurmi Local Government Area, police spokesperson Jimoh Moshood said in a statement.

There is a report by Premium Times that a terrorist group is gradually gaining prominence in Tangaza Local Government Area, Sokoto.

The group, the report states, possess sophisticated weapons and are applying ‘strange laws’ and punishing defaulters, in the area which they have taken control of.

All you need to know about the Euro 2020 qualifying draw

France's defender Samuel Umtiti (top) heads the ball to score the opening goal during the Russia 2018 World Cup semi-final football match between France and Belgium at the Saint Petersburg Stadium in Saint Petersburg on July 10, 2018. CHRISTOPHE SIMON / AFP

A unique European Championships in 2020 that will be hosted in 12 cities across the continent will begin to take shape when the qualifying draw takes place in Dublin on Sunday at 1100GMT.

How does it work?
UEFA’s 55 nations will be split into five groups of six teams and five groups of five with the top two from each section becoming the first 20 teams to qualify.

What about the Nations League?
Some sides have already guaranteed themselves the safety net of a playoff to qualify via UEFA’s new Nations League competition in March 2020, but only should they fail to make the top two in their qualifying group.

Results from the Nations League also determined the seedings for Sunday’s draw with the 55 countries split into seven pots.

Why seven pots of seeds?
The 10 top seeds are split into two pots with the four nations to have qualified for the Nations League finals (England, Switzerland, Portugal and The Netherlands) in their own pot to guarantee they are in a five-team group so they don’t have to play any qualifiers when the Nations League finals take place in June.

Who are the other top seeds?
Pot one will contain world champions France, Belgium, Croatia, Italy, Poland and Spain.

Who are in the other pots?
Germany’s relegation from their Nations League group means they drop into pot two alongside Iceland, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Ukraine, Denmark, Sweden, Russia, Austria, Wales, Czech Republic.

Pot 3 – Slovakia, Turkey, Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland, Scotland, Norway, Serbia, Finland, Bulgaria and Israel

Pot 4 – Hungary, Romania, Greece, Albania, Montenegro, Cyprus, Estonia, Slovenia, Lithuania and Georgia

Pot 5 – FYR Macedonia, Kosovo, Belarus, Luxembourg, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Moldova, Gibraltar and the Faroe Islands

Pot 6 – Latvia, Liechtenstein, Andorra, Malta and San Marino

When are the matches played?
All qualifying matches will be played between March and November 2019 with double headers in March, June, September, October and November. Those sides involved in the Nations League finals won’t have any qualifiers in June.

When and where does the tournament take place?
The 12 host cities are: Amsterdam, Baku, Bilbao, Bucharest, Budapest, Copenhagen, Dublin, Glasgow, London, Munich, Rome and Saint Petersburg.

The tournament will take place between June 12 and July 12 2020.

Tyra Banks Picks Side In Nicki Minaj And Cardi B Beef?

Except you are living under a rock, then you can’t say you haven’t heard about the Nicki Minaj and Cardi B’s beef which has been ongoing for months now.

With several celebrities taking sides, it appears retired supermodel, Tyra Banks who has ventured into the rap game herself may have just picked a side.

TMZ caught up with Banks earlier in the week and in the process of giving herself a new rap name, Banks might have inadvertently taken sides in the raging war between Cardi B and Nicki Minaj.

The “America Next Top Model” star who dropped her new “Be A Star” remix straight-up declares herself Tyra B. Although this was probably made in jest, the visual for the song sees Banks dropping bars with many fans noticing that her rap game sounds very Cardi-esque.

It is noteworthy that Banks has previously said she channelled Cardi B and Nicki Minaj for her new single. The song is from her new film, “Life-Size 2” in which Banks reprises her role of a Barbie-like doll come to life.

Watch the video below and you be the judge.

2019: Buhari In Order To Withhold Assent To Electoral Act Amendment Bill – Lawan

ABUJA – Senate majority leader, Ahmad Lawan has said President Muhammadu Buhari has the right to withhold assent to the Electoral Act Amendment Bill as he could be vetting it in order to identify grey areas.

Senator Ahmad who is a member of the All Progressives Congress, APC, the ruling party in the country said that President Buhari cannot be stampeded into signing the bill into law as he has to take his time to scrutinize what was passed and sent to him.

He said the Senate corrected all the observations raised by the President when he returned the bill to the National Assembly and that even without the assent of the President, the 2006 Electoral Act was in perfect order to guide the nation in having a transparent election in 2019.

He made the observations on Friday after the jumat prayers at the mosque inside the Presidential Villa.

His words, “The electoral bill you are talking about has been sent back twice or thrice, that is to tell you that the president is willing to sign the bill provided it meets certain conditions that will make our electoral processes better and more sane.

“So, the President is studying this bill, it is not like you will send it to him and he will immediately sign. This is a sign that he is really interested in what we sent back to him. It is for him and his advisers to read through line by line and see how best the electoral process can be enhanced.

“So, I don’t think we have ran out of time, in fact I think we should encourage the president and those helping him to complete going through the bill before he signs. What is the problem? We still have the 2006 Electoral Act as amended that we used in 2015 for an election that was adjudged to be free, fair and an improved process. We don’t necessarily put so much pressure and unneeded criticism of the president when he is yet to complete his analysis of what has been sent to him. He needs to take his time.

“And I will advise, even though I am not one of his advisers, that he goes through what has been sent to him line by line, understand whatever his advisers will tell him and of what we have sent will make the elections in 2019 better, then he signs but if however he discovers some provisions that will bring contradictions and controversies, he can can withhold assent. I’m not advocating that he withholds assent but if he does, that is his right. I want to tell you that the APC caucus in the National Assembly stands with Mr. President on this.”

World AIDs Day: WHO Calls For Regular Test For People Living With HIV

ABUJA – Dr Matshidiso Moeti, Regional Director, World Health Organisation (WHO), has said HIV testing is essential in expanding treatment and ensuring that all people living with HIV can live healthy and productive lives.

She added that, it is also crucial in ensuring that 90% of people living with HIV know their HIV status; 90% of people diagnosed with HIV receive antiretroviral therapy; and 90% of people living with HIV, and who are on treatment, achieve viral load suppression. HIV testing empowers people to make choices about HIV prevention specifically how to protect themselves and their loved ones.

She made this known in her message to commemorate 2018 World AIDS Day saying, the world community will come together to mark the 30th anniversary of World AIDS Day with this year’s theme as: ‘Know your status.’ The only way to determine a person’s HIV status is for them to have an HIV test.

According to her, “Significant progress has been made in the AIDS response since 1988, and today four in five (20.8 million) people living with HIV in the African Region know their status. In addition, more than three in five (15.3 million) people are accessing life-saving antiretroviral therapy.  There is a more than 30% reduction in AIDS related deaths since 2010 and people living with HIV are living longer, healthier lives thanks to the sustained access to antiretroviral therapy.

“However, this progress is not uniform in our Region. For example, in West and Central Africa, only one in two (2.9 million) people living with HIV know their status. That is why WHO, partners and member states in the sub-region are working together to accelerate the expansion of HIV testing programmes in order to reach people living with HIV who do not know their status and ensuring that they are linked to quality and prevention services.

Former US president George H.W. Bush, who helped steer America through the end of the Cold War, died Friday at age 94, his family announced.

“Jeb, Neil, Marvin, Doro and I are saddened to announce that after 94 remarkable years, our dear Dad has died,” his son, former president George W. Bush, said in a statement released on Twitter by a family spokesman.

“George H.W. Bush was a man of the highest character and the best dad a son or daughter could ask for.”

Bush’s passing comes just months after the death in April of his wife and revered first lady Barbara Bush — his “most beloved woman in the world” — to whom he was married for 73 years.

He is survived by his five children and 17 grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements will be announced in due course, a family spokesman said.

The US leader was a foreign policy stalwart who declared a “new world order” in 1990 and drove Iraq from Kuwait but saw his military intervention in the Middle East serve as a harbinger of chaos to come.

The decorated war pilot and former CIA chief suffered the ignominy of being a one-term president, denied a second term over a weak economy when he lost the 1992 election to upstart Democrat Bill Clinton.

Labour ministry recommends NAF tailoring workshop for N-Power Programme

Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar

The Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment on Friday recommended the Nigerian Air Force Investment Limited (NAFIL) Tailoring Workshop for the basic and advance training of N-Power programme participants.

The Director Skills Acquisition of the ministry, Alhaji Muhammed Jibiya made the recommendation during the accreditation of tailoring workshop in Kaduna.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the workshop was inaugurated on June 11, 2017 to provide tailoring services to air force personnel and civilians.Jibia said, “we were here sometime in September, and we were satisfied with facility and the equipment we saw on ground and that is why we are here today to accredit the NAFIL workshop. He lauded the initiative of the Nigerian Air Force for coming up with such a workshop and called on other forces to emulate from the NAF.

In his remarks, the Managing Director of NAFIL, AVM Abubakar Bagari said the programme was the initiative of the Chief of Air staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar. Bagari added that the programme is aimed at making the Nigerian Air Force self sufficient in uniform production and boost the capacity of personnel.

This is also to reinforce the culture of self reliance, enhance professional performance and enforce the culture of prudent management of resources.“For the period of about one year and five months, the workshop has produced over 52, 000 pares of uniform for the Nigerians Air Force and other security agencies.

He recalled that the workshop was initially planned to be set up in partnership with a foreign company, of which NAFIL would have contributed N300 million.“But later the plan changed due to the policy of the force to enforce the culture of self reliance and today we were able to achieve this with N45 million without any partnership.

“With this initiative, we have been able to train and retrain our personnel in the field of tailoring, he added. Also, the Air Officer Commanding (AOC) Air Training Command Kaduna, AVM Mohammed Suleiman said NAF is poised to enhance skills acquisition of its personnel for self reliance.

Suleiman also explained that discipline and proper military training requires proper kitting which starts from the standard and quality of personnel uniforms. He noted that the Airforce had hitherto faced the challenge of low quality uniforms for its personnel, stressing that with the workshop, which is an initiative of the Chief of Air Staff, the challenge has now become a thing of the past.NAN report that no fewer than 113 NAF personnel and civilians are currently working in the workshop.
