The Late 5: U.S. government replies FG on alleged plans to endorse Atiku; Henceforth, No work, no pay – FG tells ASUU | Other top stories

These are the stories that drove the conversation today:

The Federal Government has ordered that no payment of any form of salaries and allowances should be made to members of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on strike in Federal and Inter-Varsity Centres.

As contained in a memo issued by S.B. Ramon-Yusuf, a Director at the National Universities Commission (NUC) to Universities and Inter-Varsity Centres, the no-work-no-pay rule is in view of the current industrial action by the union.

“Consequently, I am to direct vice-chancellors to apply the “No-work-no-payâ€ rule. ” All Vice-Chancellors and Directors of Centers should note that the salaries to staff on strike from whatever source of funds shall be viewed as violation of extant rules and directive of the Federal Government of Nigeria,â€ the memo read.

Ahead of the 2019 presidential election, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) on Friday appointed Senator Dino Melaye and seven others as spokespersons for its Presidential Campaign Council.

According to a statement by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, announcing the names of handlers of operational directorates and spokespersons for its campaign, the other spokespersons for the campaign listed include Buba Galadima, Akin Osuntokun, Osita Chidoka, Nnenna Ukeje, Segun Sowunmi, Kazeem Afegbua, and Umar Sanni.

The council also named a former Cross River governor, Senator Liyel Imoke, as Deputy Director General in charge of Operations, while former Presidential aspirant, Taminu Turaki, was named as Deputy Director General for Administration, as well as Contact and Mobilisation headed by the party’s National Organising Secretary, Colonel Austin Akobundu; and Communication and Strategy headed by Bolaji Abdullahi.

The United States Consulate in Lagos has reacted to a recent statement by the Federal Government on the alleged issuance of visa to the Presidential candidate of the PDP, Atiku Abubakar, saying matters relating to the application for or issuance of visa for anyone, irrespective of their social standing in the society, was strictly a confidential matter.

Public Affairs Officer of the US Consulate in Lagos, Brussel Brooks, who made the assertion in Ibadan on Friday, while fielding questions from journalists called on candidates at all levels, from presidential to House of Assembly elections, to focus on issue-based campaigns instead of dwelling on things that were not important to the well-being of Nigerians.

“We don’t discuss visa status of any person, whether it be a highly rated official, a presidential candidate or an average citizen.

“Anyone who applies for a visa should know that there will be some records that are confidential. It is classified as a private document by the United States Government, and we never discuss them in public, he added.

The governorship candidate of the PDP in Lagos, Jimi Agbaje, has petitioned the state Commissioner of Police, Edgal Imohimi, over publicity materials for his campaign vandalised and removed by unknown persons in the state.

Police spokesperson, CSP Chike Oti, who confirmed the petition, said the CP has directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Panti, Yaba, to set up a monitoring team comprising the command’s Riders Unit, to daily monitor and arrest anybody seen vandalising or defacing campaign posters or boards.

“Constrained by limited manpower, there is no way the command could post policemen to cover all  campaign posters in the state but the much it can do, is to adopt the Aberdeen System in protecting campaign adverts and to solicit the cooperation of all and sundry in ensuring the maintenance of law and order,â€ he added.

The Nigerian Army says it has identified some persons who released false death toll on Metele attack, stressing that the perpetrators through these acts are covertly supporting terrorists and their activities in Nigeria with a long-term objective.

Stating that it was pressing legal action against them, Army Spokesman, Brigadier General Sani Usman added that the Nigerian Army is aware they plan to use insecurity to scuttle and subvert the democratic process in the country and also create an erroneous impression of the Nigerian Army through inaccurate and false publication of casualty figures on the unfortunate attacks on some of its locations in the North East.

“This is a deliberate attempt to demoralise the Nigerian Army which would have devastating consequences on the troops’ will to discharge their constitutional duties especially in the fight against terrorism and insurgency, thus affecting national security, a part of the statement said.

Give More Attention To Accident Victims, NGO Urges Govt

Mr Bamigboye Okanlawon, the National Coordinator of  Road Accident Information and Rescue Organisation, has called on government at all levels to pay adequate attention to road accident victims in the country.

Okanlawon made the call  on Saturday in Ibadan at the official inauguration  and decoration of new regular rescue marshals  of the organisation.

The national coordinator regretted what he termed inadequate government attention to road accident victims and called on the  authorities to step up surveillance and care of victims.

He said other disasters such as plane crashes, building collapse and others were receiving governments attention  while road accidents which were more common  were not having the desired attention.

Hospitals reject accident victims and accept victims of other disasters because they know that the cost of treatment administered on victims of other disasters will be fully borne by the government or humanitarian agencies or organisations.

This makes the number of lives saved in such disasters higher compared with victims of road accidents whose burden are unfortunately left for their family members to bear.

There is an urgent need for the Federal Government and state governments to come up with policies that will address this issue.

Road accident victims need to be given prompt medical treatment by the hospital and further assistance from the government agencies concerned, Okanlawon said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the highlight  of the occasion
was the decoration of  the new  marshals and presentation of awards to distinguished personalities.

The Road Accident Information and Rescue organisation is a Non-Governmental organisation that partners the Federal Road Safety Commission, Police, National Emergency Management Agency, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps in rescuing accident victims.

Sterling goes Cherry picking again to lift Manchester City lear

Raheem Sterling kept up a remarkable personal record against Bournemouth as his goal in Manchester City’s 3-1 win helped the champions move five points clear at the top of the Premier League on Saturday.

Sterling struck from close-range in the second half at the Etihad Stadium to restore City’s lead, making him the first player to score in each of his first six Premier League appearances against a single opponent.

The England winger’s fine second-half performance was crucial to securing a sixth successive league victory for the unbeaten leaders, who had produced an uneven display in the first half.

Callum Wilson’s header drew Bournemouth level just before half time, following Bernardo Silva’s opening goal for City.

The visitors proved awkward opponents even as they fell to a fourth successive league defeat, which was sealed by Ilkay Gundogan’s late goal.

This was the first of nine matches across three competitions during December for City and manager Pep Guardiola is aware of the need for rotation to avoid burn-out.

To that end, he gave Gabriel Jesus a first Premier League start for three months and left Sergio Aguero out of the squad altogether, citing a minor muscle problem for the Argentina forward.

That was one of five changes made to the line-up that had started the 2-2 Champions League draw in Lyon four days earlier.

Fernandinho was retained in midfield as captain, even though Guardiola has indicated more than once over the past fortnight that the 33-year-old will need to be rested at some point during the month.

For the first 20 minutes, it appeared as if City would get the job done comfortably, despite so many changes.

Bernardo Silva, restored to the team after missing two matches with a minor injury, swept in the opening goal in the 16th minute.

He struck after Leroy Sane darted in from the left, behind the ball-watching Simon Francis, to reach Oleksandr Zinchenko’s pass and forced goalkeeper Asmir Begovic off his line to block.

– City surge –
City had dominated the possession up to that point, without making Begovic work too hard.

Perhaps it was too easy for Guardiola’s side, because they started to get complacent; possession was squandered as passes went astray too easily.

They had a warning when Joshua King’s cross zipped beyond Wilson in the centre and sped towards the far corner of the net, with Ederson reacting sharply to push the ball away.

That warning was not heeded, and Wilson equalised in the penultimate minute of the half, rising above Nicolas Otamendi and Danilo to head in a fine cross from Francis.

City worked hard to try to reassert themselves, and Sterling almost restored their lead at the end of a mazy run past five Bournemouth players, with a shot that hit Andrew Surman and deflected against the post.

The winger’s frustration was only temporary, though, as he made it 2-1 in the 57th minute, feeding a pass for the onrushing Danilo to shoot, and then turning in the loose ball after Begovic had failed to hold on.

City pushed for further goals, with Jesus almost scoring for the first time in the league since August with a glancing header from Gundogan’s free-kick that Begovic pushed aside, before Sane somehow failed to get a touch to Fernandinho’s drive.

The third goal did arrive with 11 minutes left; Sane gathered a loose ball following a short corner, played a one-two with substitute David Silva and crossed low for Gundogan to turn in from eight yards.

The 6 best teas to help you sleep

One thing your grandma may have suggested when you were a kid: Sip on a nice cup of hot tea before bed. Well, that advice is actually legit (thanks, G-Ma!) according to Barbie Boules, R.D.N., founder of Nyoutrition.

If you've ever been dead tired only to hit the pillow and find yourself wide awake (haven't we all?), then you know just how difficult it can be to unwind at the end of the day.

One thing your grandma may have suggested when you were a kid: Sip on a nice cup of hot tea before bed. Well, that advice is actually legit (thanks, G-Ma!) according to Barbie Boules, R.D.N., founder of Nyoutrition. "A good cup of tea is a nice signal to your senses that dinner is over and the day is winding down," she says.

Just make sure to choose decaffeinated or herbal teas, Boules says, many of which have the added benefit of providing antioxidant and immune-boosting benefits. "At the very least, they’re a flavorful way to hydrate," she says.

1.Chamomile

This one probably comes as no surprise-chamomile is a top choice when it comes to teas that help you rest better.

"Chamomile is an herb that provides medicinal benefits-namely, it’s linked with a natural tranquil effect that helps you shut down at the end of a hectic day," says Samantha Cassetty, R.D. "Chamomile has been shown to improve sleep quality in certain people."

It's true: Some studies indicate chamomile may not only help encourage deeper sleep, but also decrease stress.

2. Passionflower

Boules says she counts passionflower tea amongst her favorites for bedtime teas. In fact, the one in her cabinet right now is Trader Joe's Herbal Tea Well Rested Tea, which includes a blend of passionflower leaves, chamomile flowers, and spearmint and peppermint leaves, all of which contribute to a better night's rest.

3. Decaffeinated Green Tea

Just like its caffeinated cousin (regular green tea), decaf green tea contains a compound called L-theanine, "which helps promote feelings of relaxation," says Casetty, "and that chill vibe may be just what you need to help you sleep."

In one 2017 study, researchers found that nixing the caffeine in green tea and letting the L-theanine work its magic was key to improving sleep quality, as well as reducing stress.

4. Valerian

Valerian root tea, is a solid option when you want to unwind. In fact, a comprehensive review of valerian root and its effects on sleep showed that participants who enjoyed it regularly had an 80 percent greater chance of reporting improved sleep compared to patients who were taking a placebo.

"Beyond the calming compounds, many people find sipping on hot tea is a soothing ritual that can set the stage for getting a good night’s rest," Cassetty says.

5. Lavender

If you've ever dabbed a bit of lavender essential oil on your wrist or inhaled the fragrant flower in the wild, then you know firsthand just how soothing it smells. You won't be shocked then that the same vibe applies to lavender as a tea, and Boules says that's why it's always in her arsenal.

6. Fennel and Ginger Tea

Boules says teas geared toward better digestion may also provide more restful sleep because, well, have you ever been awake with indigestion from those midnight nachos you had to have?

This Yogi stomach ease tea includes ingredients like fennel and ginger, which Boules says are helpful to keep your digestive track happy.

Facebook holds Election Integrity Exhibition in Lagos

Lagos, Nigeria – November 30, 2018: As part of its continued commitment to tackling false news, fake accounts and hate speech, as well as improving the transparency of advertising on its platform, Facebook today held an Election Integrity Exhibition for media, civil society partners and other stakeholders in Nigeria.

Outlining the work it has been doing in Nigeria, the exhibition also focused on how Facebook is dealing with bad actors; tackling fake accounts; improving the transparency of advertising and pages; and reducing the distribution of false news in the run-up to the 2019 Nigerian general elections.

Taking the media through the tour, Tom Miller, Facebook’s Politics & Government Outreach Manager for Europe, Middle East & Africa said that the company takes the integrity of elections seriously, and will continue to explore multiple measures and partnerships to ensure that the integrity of the Nigerian Elections is protected. He emphasized that teams across the company are committed to ensuring Facebook remains a safe platform for all.

“Our goal is to continue launching measures to ensure the integrity and safety of the Nigerian Elections, so that we can continue to drive positive social and economic impact across Sub-Saharan Africa, drive innovation by supporting Africa’s tech entrepreneurship ecosystem and also train communities and the next generation of leaders to better understand and utilise the power of digital tools for civic engagement,â€ Miller said.

Highlighting Facebook’s commitment to fighting the spread of false news and hate speech on the platform, Akua Gyekye, Public Policy lead for Anglophone West Africa, said that Facebook cares about Nigeria and is invested in the country.

“Facebook’s mission is clear: to give people the power to build communities and bring the world closer together. Our mission in Nigeria is no different – we understand the importance of being local in a global world – and want to have a positive long-term impact,â€ she said. “In addition, we want to support people who want to be more civically engaged and connect with issues they care about— not just on Election Day, but every day. We do this through a variety of activities, such as partnering with civil society organisations focused on increasing voter education, building tailored Civic Engagement tools which are relevant for Nigeria, and by raising digital literacy by sharing tips on how to spot false news with our community.â€

Gyekye restated Facebook’s policy of remaining impartial, saying that the platform allows all political ideas to be expressed as long as they are within Facebook’s Community Standards.

She also stressed the need for people to be vigilant, especially during the election period, and to report any content that they feel might be in contravention of Facebook’s Community Standards. “We encourage our community to flag content to us that they don’t think should be on the platform – whether it’s a picture, a written post, a video – reporting is completely anonymous and confidential and can be done in three simple steps. This allows our Community Operations team to review the content and remove anything that’s violating our Community Standards.â€

APC, A Lawless Party – Onuesoke

PDP,Chief James Ibori, Onuesoke

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Chieftain, Chief Sunny Onuesoke has accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of being a lawless party.
Onuesoke who made the allegation at Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA) Ikeja, Lagos  during a chat with newsmen described APC as lawless party that is at war with itself, the people and   has refused to obey court orders.
He said while other parties have conducted peaceful primaries, APC’s primaries from wards, House of Assemblies, House of Representatives and Senate were bedeviled with one crisis or the other.
“As I am talking with you right now, the party is still struggling with internal crisis that emanated from the primaries when election is two months away from here. Such party that cannot put its house is order   is not fit to rule the people,
“Just imagine where  President Buhari and the Chairman of  APC, Comrade Oshiomole were at variance in ditching out orders. While the party is asking aggrieved members to withdraw their cases from court, the President is asking them to seek redress in court. This is to tell you how confused the party is, he stated
He accused the ruling party of not obeying court orders, stressing that although former National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki has been granted bail on at least six different occasions by various courts, the Nigerian government has persistently refused to comply with the court orders.
He further maintained that  the most absurd of violation of human rights by the APC administration is its treatment of Ibraheem El-Zakzaky, a leader of a Shiite group who  has been in detention without any trial for .the last to two years.
He said the freezing of the account of suspected looters by the ruling APC government is another act of lawlessness by the party, wondering why account of someone who has not been found guilty by the court should be freezed.
Onuesoke charged Nigerians, irrespective of creed, class or sectional persuasion, to be at alert and vote in PDP that is  truly desirous of national unity, respect for rule of law and development of the Nigerian state in the 2019 general elections.
“PDP is a party that respect  rule of law. Nigerians have tested APC and discovered that they have have been caged. They should vote in PDP in 2019 so as to get back their freedom. A vote for APC is a vote for another four years of imprisonment, he disclosed.

Sarri not worried Ranieri has inside track on his methods

Claudio Ranier / AFP PHOTO / JORGE GUERRERO

Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri is confident a good turn he did for Fulham coach Claudio Ranieri will not come back to bite him when his side clash with the Premier League’s bottom club on Sunday.

Sarri, who will hope his side rebound from the 3-1 reverse by Tottenham Hotspur last Saturday, extended an invitation to his fellow Italian to watch a training session when he was in England earlier this season.

“I spoke with him for three days — I don’t remember exactly — one month ago, or 45 days ago,” said Sarri, who dined with Ranieri afterwards in the Chelsea training ground canteen.

“He came to Cobham to see two, three trainings. He wanted to speak with me, with Gianfranco (Zola).”

Ranieri, who was out of work at the time but was hired by Fulham last month after they sacked Slavisa Jokanovic, had years earlier allowed Sarri, then a banker who on the side coached amateur team Antella, to watch a training session at his Serie A outfit Fiorentina.

“I went to speak to him when he was the coach of Fiorentina, 20 years ago, maybe. I don’t remember very well, but I don’t think he can remember this meeting,” said Sarri.

Sarri has revived Chelsea since replacing Antonio Conte, guiding them to fourth in the table — seven points adrift of leaders Manchester City — and the last 32 of the Europa League.

He said he studied Ranieri’s teams from afar, notably the Leicester side he coached to a remarkable Premier League title in 2016.

“Usually a team of Claudio is really very solid,” said the 59-year-old.

“They usually defend very well, sometimes low, but very well.

“Usually he has a team very dangerous at counter-attacks, like in Leicester, but not only in Leicester.”

Sarri said 67-year-old Ranieri, who acquired the nickname ‘The Tinkerman’ during his four year spell in charge of Chelsea from 2000-2004, said he would not go so far as to classify his compatriot as a friend.

“Friend is a big word, I think, but I like him very much,” said Sarri.

Sarri, though, could not fathom why there had not been offers for Ranieri’s services from big clubs following his sacking by Leicester in the 2016-17 campaign.

“Usually the presidents are very strange,” he said.

Ranieri eventually ended up managing mid-level French Ligue 1 outfit Nantes for one season, leaving them in May this year, and was at a loose end when Fulham came calling.

“Usually you can live very well for two, three months, then you’re in trouble,” said Sarri.

“Every coach, I think, is like this. For two months you’re happy because you have time, and after two months you miss adrenaline.”

Dana Air Concludes NCAA Recertification Exercise, Promises Better Service Delivery

Dana Air

Dana Air has concluded its recertification exercise conducted by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) which began few weeks ago, with a promise of better service delivery.

The airline told its customers of a plan for additional flights to ease the pain of high cost of tickets as a result of flight shortage across the country.

Kingsley Ezenwa, Media and Communications Manager, Dana Air gave said this on Saturday in Lagos.

Ezenwa said “We have finally concluded our recertification exercise with the NCAA. Recertification in Nigeria’s aviation industry is a standard practice conducted every two years by the NCAA.

“During the period, an airline’s operation is totally reviewed from ground handling to quality assurance and particularly safety standards and we are glad to have scaled this rigorous process.’’

He commended the NCAA for carrying out a thorough check on the airline’s operations before recertifying them.

He noted that the exercise was a testimonial that its 10 years’ experience in Nigeria’s airspace was not a failure.

According to him, there is no iota of truth in the claim that the airline is facing operational challenges.

“For the records, Dana Air presently has five aircrafts out of which two are undergoing mandatory maintenance which in aviation is called C-checks.

“The safety and comfort of our customers come first before any other consideration and we find such reports really unnecessary.

“We advise the purveyors of such report to rather commend us, having served Nigeria for over 10 years and counting.

“Showing massive commitment to changing the narrative about domestic airlines and Nigeria’s aviation industry as viable.

“However, we really feel the pain of our customers who have had to travel by road as a result of the shortage of aircraft across the country and hike in fares.
