Fasehun’s death: We’re devastated – Son

Boko Haram deserves no pardon but death

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Fasehun, the founder and leader of the Oodua People’s Congress (OPC), died in Lagos in the early hours of Saturday after a brief illness.

Kayode Fasehun, son of late Dr. Frederick Faseun, says the family is devastated by his sudden death.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Fasehun, the founder and leader of the Oodua People’s Congress (OPC), died in Lagos in the early hours of Saturday after a brief illness.

Kayode, who spoke on behalf of the family, told NAN that Fasehun’s death had left members of his family speechless and in pains.

“We still can’t believe that Daddy is gone. He was active on Tuesday, hospitalised on Wednesday and died a few days after.

“We can’t believe this but God knows best. We wish to thank Nigerians for their support and prayers, he said.

He said the family was consoled by the fact that Fasehun died peacefully.

“We express gratitude for the prayers and good wishes of friends, well-wishers and family, Kayode said.

Fasehun was educated at the University of Aberdeen, Scotland, and graduated as a medical professional, after obtaining his first degree.

He was a specialist in four branches of medicine: Anesthesiology, Acupuncture, Medicine and Surgery, thus becoming West Africa’s first acupuncturist.

He worked for many years at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) where he rose through the ranks to become an authority in the medical profession. He was later awarded a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD.) degree.

Amongst his many other endeavours, Dr. Fasehun was the founder of the Oodua People’s Congress (OPC), a pan-Yoruba socio-cultural group, Besthope Hospitals and Century Hotels, Lagos.

He later founded Frederick Isiotan Fasehun Foundation (FIFF), a non-governmental organization, which has security, unity and health as its core mandate.

He was active in the Nigerian political space for many years and was one of the founding fathers of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) on which platform he became a presidential aspirant.

Fasehun was a renowned freedom fighter and an icon for social justice, a stance that earned him 19 months of solitary confinement at the Intercentre (a prison facility built in the Ikoyi Cemetery) under the former military Head of State, General Sani Abacha in 1996.

He later served in other prison facilities across the country including the Kuje Prison, Abuja, and a few other detention centres.

Shortly before his death, Fasehun, on the platform of FIFF, laid the foundation stone for Africa’s first University of Security, Management and Technology (USMT) in his hometown, Ondo, as a measure against pressing security challenges in the continent.

Teresa giudice shows off her insane bodybuilder physique in a bikini photo

In the photo, Teresa rocks a red floral bikini, with clear water and sunny skies acting as her backdrop.

Earlier this week, The Real Housewives of New Jersey star Teresa Giudice posted a photo to Instagram of her on vacation in Turks & Caicos, and, sure, the scenery is stunning-but are you kidding me with that insane body?

In the photo, Teresa rocks a red floral bikini, with clear water and sunny skies acting as her backdrop.

I mean, killer, right?

Of course, it comes as no surprise: The RHONJ cast member has always had a fit body, and earlier this year she took it up a notch by training for a bodybuilding competition. So when the 46-year-old mom of four hit the beach during a trip with her two older daughters, she proudly showed off her hard work.

This summer, Teresa showed off her super-fit physique at the NPC South Jersey Bodybuilding Championships, where she earned third place at her first-ever bodybuilding competition.

"It was something I’ve always wanted to do-for myself," Teresa told Us Weekly in a cover story. "I’ve gone to the gym since I could drive. I wanted to see my body transform."

Teresa trained for months to compete in the 40-plus bikini division. She even shared several videos of her training regimen on Instagram, as further proof of her hard work-including one where she is crushing a seriously hard move for her rear delts.

And another where she makes weighted jump squats (almost) look easy.

Teresa's time away with her daughters comes while her husband, Joe Giudice, is currently serving a 41-month prison sentence for mail, wire and bankruptcy fraud, People reports. He is set to be released in 2019, but will also face possible deportation as a result of his time spent in prison.

The RHONJ cast member, however, appears to be staying in good spirits with her daughters at her side. In another photo from the vacation, she wrote: "Mommy & Daughters time together there is nothing like it."

Super Falcons win AWCON championship for the 9th time

Nigeria’s female national football team, the Super Falcons have won the African Women Cup of Nations for the ninth time.

Nigeria had the chance to take the lead in the 75th minute after winger Francisca Ordega was fouled in the box by Bayana Bayana goalkeeper, Kaylin Swart. Striker Asisat Oshoala stepped up to take the resultant penalty, which she sent wide.

The game went into extra time as neither team scored a goal in regulation time. Both teams battled hard for the victory but goalscoring chances were few and far in between.

The game went into penalty shootouts for the first time in the competition’s history with Nigeria winning 4-3 after Falcons goalkeeper, Tochukwu Oluehi saved South Africa’s final spot kick.

Nigeria won the first five editions (1998, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006) in the competition before they were dislodged in the semi-finals by hosts, Equatorial Guinea in their eighth attempt (2008), who went on to defeat South Africa 2-1 in the finals.

The Falcons won the last two editions – 2014 and 2016 – defeating Cameroon on both occasions in the final.

Group Lauds Buhari’s Achievement, Endorse Him For Second Term

An independent leadership monitoring group, Rebirth Nigeria Development Agenda (RNDA) has applauded the achievements of President Muhammadu Buhari notably in the country’s educational sector.

In a statement signed by Comrade Charles Ndika, President General of the forum, made available to journalists on Saturday in Abuja, they called on Nigerians to harmonise structures and vote massively for President Muhammadu Buhari in the forthcoming election.

The statement reads in part:

“From the results of our findings, it is marvelous to note that a leader in Nigeria can achieve these feat within his first tenure in office.

“From our research in collaboration with numerous educational agencies in the country, we observed that the number of Nigerians travelling abroad in search of knowledge under the present administration has reduced drastically due to improvements in our education sector. Rather, in a sharp contrast to previous occurrence, foreigners are being admitted into our tertiary institutions enmasse thus Nigeria is now rated as one of the most advanced center for acquiring knowledge in the African continent. All thanks to President Muhammadu Buhari for creating this enabling environment and changing the perspectives. He indeed deserve some accolades and a chance to do more because he is ready to drive Nigeria to the NEXT LEVEL,”.

According to the group, the School Feeding Scheme introduced by the President Muhammadu Buhari led administration has created an enabling environment for learning by encouraging school enrolment and high attendance for the younger generation.

The group also noted the enhanced security network in the country’s North East has created a peaceful environment for learning.

“The “School Feeding Scheme” introduced by this administration has helped to improve the welfare of pupils and parents. Today, many kids in nursery and primary schools are willing to learn because of the comfortable mode stimulated by the feeding scheme.

“Prior to this time, students were not comfortable attending schools due to the defunct rising cases of kidnapping that trended in that era. Today, schools in Nigeria’s North East are closely monitored with an improved security system where students learn under a comfortable environment,”.

They called on Nigerians to “do the needful” by electing President Muhammadu Buhari for a second term which according to them is well deserving.

“We are commending the positive leadership style of Mr President especially in the education sector. From our tour of the various educational facilities (completed and ongoing) we observed that the choice locations of these projects are equitably distributed without any region having an edge over another. This is commendable. It is a confirmation that Mr President is a man of integrity, transparency and a focused leader wielding no traces of ethnic sentiments. This is the kind of leader we need to propel the fortunes of this nation to the NEXT LEVEL of importance, relevance and admiration in the committee of nations.

“RNDA wishes to thank President Muhammadu Buhari for positioning the country on the global landmark of positive developments. We are not in doubt that his “second coming” is the best option for our beloved country and this MUST become a reality because Nigerians can attest to the good leadership style enjoyed from 2015 till now,” it concluded.

The Late 5: U.S. government replies FG on alleged plans to endorse Atiku; Henceforth, No work, no pay – FG tells ASUU | Other top stories

These are the stories that drove the conversation today:

The Federal Government has ordered that no payment of any form of salaries and allowances should be made to members of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on strike in Federal and Inter-Varsity Centres.

As contained in a memo issued by S.B. Ramon-Yusuf, a Director at the National Universities Commission (NUC) to Universities and Inter-Varsity Centres, the no-work-no-pay rule is in view of the current industrial action by the union.

“Consequently, I am to direct vice-chancellors to apply the “No-work-no-payâ€ rule. ” All Vice-Chancellors and Directors of Centers should note that the salaries to staff on strike from whatever source of funds shall be viewed as violation of extant rules and directive of the Federal Government of Nigeria,â€ the memo read.

Ahead of the 2019 presidential election, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) on Friday appointed Senator Dino Melaye and seven others as spokespersons for its Presidential Campaign Council.

According to a statement by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, announcing the names of handlers of operational directorates and spokespersons for its campaign, the other spokespersons for the campaign listed include Buba Galadima, Akin Osuntokun, Osita Chidoka, Nnenna Ukeje, Segun Sowunmi, Kazeem Afegbua, and Umar Sanni.

The council also named a former Cross River governor, Senator Liyel Imoke, as Deputy Director General in charge of Operations, while former Presidential aspirant, Taminu Turaki, was named as Deputy Director General for Administration, as well as Contact and Mobilisation headed by the party’s National Organising Secretary, Colonel Austin Akobundu; and Communication and Strategy headed by Bolaji Abdullahi.

The United States Consulate in Lagos has reacted to a recent statement by the Federal Government on the alleged issuance of visa to the Presidential candidate of the PDP, Atiku Abubakar, saying matters relating to the application for or issuance of visa for anyone, irrespective of their social standing in the society, was strictly a confidential matter.

Public Affairs Officer of the US Consulate in Lagos, Brussel Brooks, who made the assertion in Ibadan on Friday, while fielding questions from journalists called on candidates at all levels, from presidential to House of Assembly elections, to focus on issue-based campaigns instead of dwelling on things that were not important to the well-being of Nigerians.

“We don’t discuss visa status of any person, whether it be a highly rated official, a presidential candidate or an average citizen.

“Anyone who applies for a visa should know that there will be some records that are confidential. It is classified as a private document by the United States Government, and we never discuss them in public, he added.

The governorship candidate of the PDP in Lagos, Jimi Agbaje, has petitioned the state Commissioner of Police, Edgal Imohimi, over publicity materials for his campaign vandalised and removed by unknown persons in the state.

Police spokesperson, CSP Chike Oti, who confirmed the petition, said the CP has directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Panti, Yaba, to set up a monitoring team comprising the command’s Riders Unit, to daily monitor and arrest anybody seen vandalising or defacing campaign posters or boards.

“Constrained by limited manpower, there is no way the command could post policemen to cover all  campaign posters in the state but the much it can do, is to adopt the Aberdeen System in protecting campaign adverts and to solicit the cooperation of all and sundry in ensuring the maintenance of law and order,â€ he added.

The Nigerian Army says it has identified some persons who released false death toll on Metele attack, stressing that the perpetrators through these acts are covertly supporting terrorists and their activities in Nigeria with a long-term objective.

Stating that it was pressing legal action against them, Army Spokesman, Brigadier General Sani Usman added that the Nigerian Army is aware they plan to use insecurity to scuttle and subvert the democratic process in the country and also create an erroneous impression of the Nigerian Army through inaccurate and false publication of casualty figures on the unfortunate attacks on some of its locations in the North East.

“This is a deliberate attempt to demoralise the Nigerian Army which would have devastating consequences on the troops’ will to discharge their constitutional duties especially in the fight against terrorism and insurgency, thus affecting national security, a part of the statement said.

Give More Attention To Accident Victims, NGO Urges Govt

Mr Bamigboye Okanlawon, the National Coordinator of  Road Accident Information and Rescue Organisation, has called on government at all levels to pay adequate attention to road accident victims in the country.

Okanlawon made the call  on Saturday in Ibadan at the official inauguration  and decoration of new regular rescue marshals  of the organisation.

The national coordinator regretted what he termed inadequate government attention to road accident victims and called on the  authorities to step up surveillance and care of victims.

He said other disasters such as plane crashes, building collapse and others were receiving governments attention  while road accidents which were more common  were not having the desired attention.

Hospitals reject accident victims and accept victims of other disasters because they know that the cost of treatment administered on victims of other disasters will be fully borne by the government or humanitarian agencies or organisations.

This makes the number of lives saved in such disasters higher compared with victims of road accidents whose burden are unfortunately left for their family members to bear.

There is an urgent need for the Federal Government and state governments to come up with policies that will address this issue.

Road accident victims need to be given prompt medical treatment by the hospital and further assistance from the government agencies concerned, Okanlawon said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the highlight  of the occasion
was the decoration of  the new  marshals and presentation of awards to distinguished personalities.

The Road Accident Information and Rescue organisation is a Non-Governmental organisation that partners the Federal Road Safety Commission, Police, National Emergency Management Agency, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps in rescuing accident victims.
