PRONACO, Bode George mourn Fasehun

PDP chieftain, Bode George speaks on son's death

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Fasehun, founder and leader of the Oodua People’s Congress (OPC) died in Lagos early Saturday morning at the age of 83.

Pro National Conference Organization (PRONACO), the umbrella platform for a People’s driven National Constitutional Conference in Nigeria, says it is shocked by the news of the death of Dr. Frederick Fasehun

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Fasehun, founder and leader of the Oodua People’s Congress (OPC) died in Lagos early Saturday morning at the age of 83.

Mr Olawale Okuniyi, PRONACO spokesperson said in Lagos that Fasehun’s sudden demise was a big blow to Nigeria.

“To us, another unfortunate political vacuum has been created in Nigeria by the sudden demise of a Yoruba nationalist, Dr Fasheun.

“However, we take serious consolation in the fact that posterity, in our humble estimation, shall be very kind to him, for rising up to lead millions of Nigerians out of the military regime.

“Fasehun led Pro democracy activists in association with other compatriots to confront military autocracy in Nigeria, when it was most dangerous to do so.

“PRONACO, Project Nigeria, Movement of Eminent Leaders of thought in Nigeria mourn the demise of Fasheun today. Adieu!, “ he said.

Meanwhile, a former Deputy National Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party(PDP),Chief Olabode George, also said he was devastated by the death of Fasehun.

George made the statement in a release by his Special Adviser on Media,Mr Othman Fadipe.

George said Fasehun’s death was unfortunate as he lived a good life and did so much for the downtrodden and the Yoruba culture.

He said Fasehun was a man with a good heart who was always unruffled even in the face of provocations.

George said the OPC founder would be sorely missed where honesty was cherished ,and prayed for the repose of his soul.

“Dr Fredrick Fasehun was a quintessential embodiment of principled and unswerving advocate of the protector of the weak and the defender of the trampled.

“He was a Yoruba elder with the complete attributes of the Omoluabi culture.

“ But he was also a Nigerian patriot who fought for justice, truth, fairness and the democratic ethos.

“He was a restless and fearless activist who lived a simple and incorruptible life, pursuing his mission with balanced commitment, with the purity of heart’s affection and with a broad nobility of character.

“He was a good man; effortlessly friendly, always calm and unruffled even amid the greatest provocations.

“He will be sorely missed wherever honesty is cherished , wherever honour, kindness and sincerity of purpose are treasured. May he find solace in the bosom of his Lord.,he said.

700,000 Kaduna Youths Assisted With HIV/AIDS Information In 2 Years — UNICEF

UNICEF,education, south sudan, Nigeria, UNICEF, humanitarian aid workers

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) says it has assisted over 700,000 Adolescent and Young Person (AYPs) with HIV information in Kaduna State in the last two years.

Dr Idris Baba, UNICEF’s HIV and AIDS Specialist, Kaduna Field Office, said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kaduna on Saturday in commemoration of the 2018 World AIDS Day.

Baba disclosed that the programme which commenced in 2016 covering seven local government areas was in conjunction with Kaduna State Government.

He listed the LGAs to include Jama’a, Jaba, Lere, Kagarko, Igabi, Chikun and Birnin Gwari.

He said close to 90,000 of the AYPS now know their HIV status compared with the less than one per cent of the group which knew their status in 2016.

“We started the AYPs intervention in two local government areas of Jema’a and Jaba in 2016, and later scaled it up to five additional LGAs namely: Lere, Kagarko, Igabi, Chikun and Birnin Gwari.

“The intervention was designed to identify, locate and place on treatment all AYPs living with virus as part of efforts to reduce the rate of new HIV infection among the group, he said.

He added that HIV prevalence among children based on a recent survey had dropped from 2.2 per cent to about one per cent in the state.

He described the development as a positive stride.

“What this means is that the rate of new infection is going down and we are keeping people alive on treatment.

“As long as we keep keeping people alive and on treatment, the rate of new infection will continue to drop.

“Prevalence rate will also drop and we will be sure to end AIDS epidemic by 2030, he said.

The HIV specialist said that knowing one’s HIV status was the most important aspect of HIV intervention and key to treatment, prevention, care and support services.

He said “For this year, it is about people knowing their HIV status. This is because you only get to access HIV drugs and other services if you know your HIV status.

“You only enroll into prevention of mother-to-child transmission services if a pregnant mother attends antenatal care, tested for HIV and found to be positive.

“For those that are found to be negative, they are given different set of information to live negatively.

“So, the importance is not only for those that are positive but also for those that are negative to know what to do, moving forward to protect themselves and their loves ones.

Baba lauded the Kaduna State Government for taking strong ownership of development partners HIV programmes and interventions in its domain.

He also said that the state had been very strategic in coming out with funds to take over from where partners are stopping.

He expressed confidence that the current dwindling resources from development partners would not affect Kaduna State, given its impressive commitment towards ending the epidemic.

Similarly, UNICEF Chief of Field Office in the state, Dr. Zakari Adam said UNICEF had recently supported the state with more than N1.2 billion to meet needs of women and children.

Adam listed the areas of interventions to include education, health, water sanitation and hygiene, nutrition, immunisation and HIV/AIDS.

World AIDS Day: 5 ways Nigerian youth can benefit from HIV self-testing

Nigeria currently has the highest rate of new HIV infection in Africa, after South Africa and Uganda. UNAIDS reported that there are 200,000 newly infected people in Nigeria annually – 46,000 of these are young women and 33,900 are young men.

The 4Youth By Youth (4YBY) Group, a team of Nigerian researchers led by the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research and scientists at the Saint Louis University, New York University and University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill backed by the United States National Institute of Health (NIH), Eunice Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development identified the adoption of HIV self-testing as an additional way to create demand for HIV testing, increase knowledge of HIV status, while reducing the accelerated spread of HIV/AIDS among young people in Nigeria. HIV testing in the privacy of one’s home will help to address issues of access and the stigma known with the disease.

This led the team to coordinate an HIV Self-Testing Contest on social media for a month, in a bid to crowdsource ideas. From the pool of 903 contestants, three young Nigerians were rewarded at the World AIDS Day HIV self-testing awareness event that held at Police Training College, Ikeja, Lagos on December 1st 2018. Free condoms were given out, while oral and confirmatory blood-based HIV tests were administered to over 300 attendees by medical practitioners at the event. Over 1000 young Nigerians got a chance to enter a raffle draw and win lots of exciting prizes.

For those that may have a reluctance or a reason why they may not want to go to the doctor and to seek a check, self-testing gives them these following benefits;

Freedom
In the past, the only way to get tested for HIV was to go to a doctor’s office, hospital, or community health centre. Self-testing gives additional freedom as well as accessibility, convenience and confidentiality.

Awareness
Self-testing has the potential to expand the number of persons aware of their HIV status. Its potential to reach those who may not otherwise test may enable the country to achieve a situation where 90% of Nigerians living with HIV may know their status.

Frequency of testing
It’s been suggest that self-testing may increase uptake and frequency of testing among individuals such as young people, who are often missed by available services.

Linkage to care
Knowing one’s status will help to decide on a proper course of action. With HIV no longer viewed as a death sentence, self-testing may facilitate linkage and treatment for individuals who test positive, while providing appropriate prevention for those who test negative.

Empowerment
Self-testing allows people to test on their own without having to go to the clinics or health facilities. It empowers people by normalising screening for HIV while giving individuals more rights and control over their own health.

As the global communities commit to increasing knowledge of HIV status, Nigeria must keep up the use of self-testing as an additional HIV testing approach.

Fasehun’s death: We’re devastated – Son

Boko Haram deserves no pardon but death

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Fasehun, the founder and leader of the Oodua People’s Congress (OPC), died in Lagos in the early hours of Saturday after a brief illness.

Kayode Fasehun, son of late Dr. Frederick Faseun, says the family is devastated by his sudden death.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Fasehun, the founder and leader of the Oodua People’s Congress (OPC), died in Lagos in the early hours of Saturday after a brief illness.

Kayode, who spoke on behalf of the family, told NAN that Fasehun’s death had left members of his family speechless and in pains.

“We still can’t believe that Daddy is gone. He was active on Tuesday, hospitalised on Wednesday and died a few days after.

“We can’t believe this but God knows best. We wish to thank Nigerians for their support and prayers, he said.

He said the family was consoled by the fact that Fasehun died peacefully.

“We express gratitude for the prayers and good wishes of friends, well-wishers and family, Kayode said.

Fasehun was educated at the University of Aberdeen, Scotland, and graduated as a medical professional, after obtaining his first degree.

He was a specialist in four branches of medicine: Anesthesiology, Acupuncture, Medicine and Surgery, thus becoming West Africa’s first acupuncturist.

He worked for many years at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) where he rose through the ranks to become an authority in the medical profession. He was later awarded a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD.) degree.

Amongst his many other endeavours, Dr. Fasehun was the founder of the Oodua People’s Congress (OPC), a pan-Yoruba socio-cultural group, Besthope Hospitals and Century Hotels, Lagos.

He later founded Frederick Isiotan Fasehun Foundation (FIFF), a non-governmental organization, which has security, unity and health as its core mandate.

He was active in the Nigerian political space for many years and was one of the founding fathers of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) on which platform he became a presidential aspirant.

Fasehun was a renowned freedom fighter and an icon for social justice, a stance that earned him 19 months of solitary confinement at the Intercentre (a prison facility built in the Ikoyi Cemetery) under the former military Head of State, General Sani Abacha in 1996.

He later served in other prison facilities across the country including the Kuje Prison, Abuja, and a few other detention centres.

Shortly before his death, Fasehun, on the platform of FIFF, laid the foundation stone for Africa’s first University of Security, Management and Technology (USMT) in his hometown, Ondo, as a measure against pressing security challenges in the continent.

Teresa giudice shows off her insane bodybuilder physique in a bikini photo

In the photo, Teresa rocks a red floral bikini, with clear water and sunny skies acting as her backdrop.

Earlier this week, The Real Housewives of New Jersey star Teresa Giudice posted a photo to Instagram of her on vacation in Turks & Caicos, and, sure, the scenery is stunning-but are you kidding me with that insane body?

In the photo, Teresa rocks a red floral bikini, with clear water and sunny skies acting as her backdrop.

I mean, killer, right?

Of course, it comes as no surprise: The RHONJ cast member has always had a fit body, and earlier this year she took it up a notch by training for a bodybuilding competition. So when the 46-year-old mom of four hit the beach during a trip with her two older daughters, she proudly showed off her hard work.

This summer, Teresa showed off her super-fit physique at the NPC South Jersey Bodybuilding Championships, where she earned third place at her first-ever bodybuilding competition.

"It was something I’ve always wanted to do-for myself," Teresa told Us Weekly in a cover story. "I’ve gone to the gym since I could drive. I wanted to see my body transform."

Teresa trained for months to compete in the 40-plus bikini division. She even shared several videos of her training regimen on Instagram, as further proof of her hard work-including one where she is crushing a seriously hard move for her rear delts.

And another where she makes weighted jump squats (almost) look easy.

Teresa's time away with her daughters comes while her husband, Joe Giudice, is currently serving a 41-month prison sentence for mail, wire and bankruptcy fraud, People reports. He is set to be released in 2019, but will also face possible deportation as a result of his time spent in prison.

The RHONJ cast member, however, appears to be staying in good spirits with her daughters at her side. In another photo from the vacation, she wrote: "Mommy & Daughters time together there is nothing like it."
