Lekki Residents Urge FG to Tackle Flood

The Lekki Estate Residents and Stakeholders Association (LERSA), on Friday called for concerted efforts by the Federal Government and stakeholders  to address regular flooding in the locality during the rainy season.

The President of LERSA, Olorogun James Emadoye, made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on the need to tackle immobility, loss of lives and property caused by flooding in the area.

Emadoye urged the government to utilise the ecological funds to provide help for Lekki and its occupants before population explosion and the flooding got worse.

“The addressing threat of flood and the resultant effects is the beginning of wisdom if you live around this axis.

“The region has become one of the most populated areas of Lagos due to the influx of businesses, the ongoing refinery, new airport and deep sea ports, we need to be able to account for lives and property.

“If you recall, three years ago, we had a situation and before it gets to that stage again.

“We are appealing that the government should do something for Lagos out of the ecological funds because the challenge is really staring us in the face.

Emadoye implored the government to invest more in the development of the coastal roads and railways to minimise usage of the single Lekki-Epe expressway.

He further advised that instead of the continuous tolling of the Lekki Epe Expressway, a new coastal road should be built and tolled.

“Road transportation alone cannot serve Lagos and the nation at large.

“The road carries all sorts of heavy machineries and loads, as a result cannot last the duration for which it was built.

“With rail, a single train will be able to lift about a 1000 at a time and so the road becomes less burdensome.

“Also, rather than tolling this road which was built by the Alhaji Lateef Jakande administration, a new coastal road should be built and tolled instead, he said.

Emadoye urged residents to look out for each other by calling the attention of the association and emergency services to blocked drainage along their residences.

“We must all be responsible, responsive and committed to the environment and to one another.

“Everybody must contribute to ensure we avert major disaster in this area now that the rains are here.

“LERSA has already set up an environment committee to tackle major problems as the need arises, he said.

Emadoye commended the Lagos State government for its prompt response to emergency situations within their limits and resources available.

He reiterated the association’s commitment to partnering with the Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration in achieving its goals at making Lekki and Lagos the mega city as planned. (NAN)

U-20: Flying Eagles Winger Makanjuola Targets Trophy Not Individual Award

Flying Eagles winger Success Makanjuola has said he is not carried away by his winning the Man of the match award in the team’s impressive 1-1 draw against Ukraine on Thursday at ongoing FIFA Under-20 World Cup in Poland.

The Flying Eagles put up an improved performance in their crucial last group game against Ukraine to ensure they qualified for the knock out phase with Makanjuola enjoying his first start in the team’s line-up.

Makanjuola who plies his trade with Water FC of Abuja before his invitation to the Flying Eagles, however, did not disappoint as he provided the assist for Tijani Muhammed with a well taken cross that led to the equalizing penalty.

Tijani eventually found the back of the net having missed a similar penalty in the first half.

A statement from the team’s camp in Poland on Friday, quoted Makanjuola as saying “I am really not too bothered about individual accolade for now.

“I am concerned about helping the team to do well and am happy that the entire team put up a good fight and we achieved our goal which is making it to the knock out round.

“The knock out round is a different level all together, and so our focus now is to prepare well to make Nigerians happy because we know they were not happy when we lost to the U.S.

“We are not even thinking of the team we will play in the next round, we just want to be at our best when the match comes and the coaches are working hard to get us in perfect shape for the next round, he said.

The fast rising winger was in the heart of the team’s overall display against the Ukrainians with his constant deadly corner kicks, crosses and dribbling for the entire 87 minutes he was on the pitch.

Meanwhile, President of Elite football club of Abuja Taiwo Bankole has urged Coach Paul Aigbogun to stick to the starting eleven he used in the game against Ukraine.

“I strongly think the starting eleven against Ukraine is a better side compared to the starting eleven we had against the U.S.

“The coming in of the Akwa United player Okon in the midfield and Makanjuola in the attack gave the team more creativity and bite upfront.

“I think the team can still go far in the tournament if the coach gets his formation and tactics right, Bankole said.

Prophet Makes Another Revelation About Buhari’s Second Term

Prophet Udensi Godlove of Land of Oil Prophetic Ministry (AKA Hill of the Lord), Lagos, has revealed what Nigerians should expect from the newly-inaugurated second term government of President Muhammadu Buhari.

The cleric gained national prominence in June 2018, when he, in a viral audio message, prophesied the Otedola Bridge tanker explosion where nine persons were roasted to death and more than 54 vehicles burnt to ashes along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

He also warned Nigerians to pray and avoid travelling out of Lagos on some certain days because of a looming disaster.

In May 2018, during an interview with this newspaper, the outspoken cleric had prophesied that President Muhammadu Buhari was going to win his second term against all odds. His prophesy, however, sparked mixed reactions from some quarters.

“2019 is going to be very interesting. By the Grace of God I have watched the election twice, the election day, after the election and the result of the election.

“You know in 2015, there was a lot of tension before the main elections is as if Nigeria was going was going to break, in fact, there will be tension everywhere but along the line, the storm will just disappear.

“There is something you have to learn about Nigeria, they are can shout but are afraid to die.

“I see a few candidates coming up by the end peace will reign. There would be cold war, but there won’t be battle. There is no cause for alarm.

“Power changing hand? No, power will only change hand if the president decides to withdraw his candidacy from the race; apart from that I don’t see any power changing hand, he had said.

Speaking with our reporter on Friday from Lagos, headquarters of his ministry, the cleric said the new government would favour Nigerians.

His words, “By the special Grace of God, we thank God almighty who is not a liar. At first when I prophesied that Buhari was going to win in the month of May 2018 when I visited Abuja, a lot of people castigated me even fathers faith attacked me that it was not going to happen that they were going to change the change.

“I told them that God is not a respecter of person, that Buhari was going to win and some of them were forced to even withdraw their invitation after fixing programmes with me.

“Like I said, God is not a respecter of person and God does not lie. Once have I heard but twice have it been spoken that all power belongs to God. And by the grace of God, Buhari is the president of Nigeria for another four years, he said.

When asked what Nigerians should expect from the new government, Prophet Udensi said, “I want to encourage everyone to support this new administration tagged Next Level. It is going to be a positive next level because God had shown me. It is going to be very bright for Nigerians. Let us keep faith in God and support this administration and everything would turn out to be good. God bless you.

South African National Blood Services Unveils Blood Delivery Drone

The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) and Western Cape Blood Service (WCBS) recently launched a blood delivery drone. The delivery drone named ‘TRON’ will be used to transport blood from blood banks to hospitals in remote areas. This service will help save lives in the face of emergencies in the Western Cape.

TRON is not the first blood delivery drone in Africa. Zipline uses drones for delivering medical supplies in Rwanda and Ghana. Another drone delivery company, Arone Delivery does the same in Nigeria. The TRON aerial vehicle would be the first in South Africa.

SANBS is determined to improve rapid access to life-saving products in rural areas with the use of drone technology. They collaborated with the Western Cape Blood Service to efficiently supply blood in the Western Cape Province of South Africa. This partnership will help reduce the mortality rates in the region.

TRON’s cargo has the capacity to accommodate up to 2kg load. It can fly at an altitude of 100m, covering a distance of up to 100 km and can deliver up to four units of blood. According to the CEO, Dr. Jonathan Lauw, TRON will perform two-way logistics delivery. It will take a patient’s blood sample to the blood bank for cross-matching and then safely deliver compatible blood to the hospital.

AD Will Reclaim Oyo State In 2019 – Guber Candidate’s Spokesman

The Alliance for Democracy (AD) will reclaim its lost governorship seat in Oyo State in the 2019 general elections, Mr Adeniji Ademola, Director- General (D-G), Hakeem Oyedele Campaign Organisation, has said.
Ademola, who stated this on Monday in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ibadan, boasted that Mr Hakeem Oyedele, the AD governorship candidate in the state, would emerge winner of the election.
NAN recalls that AD won the governorship election in 1999 when the country returned to democratic rule after the administration of Gen. Abdulsalam Abubakar handed over power to civilians.
He said that his confidence that the party would return to power in the state was anchored on its programmes.
He said AD’s programmes included free education, revival of agricultural, qualitative healthcare, youth employment and rural development, adding that the candidate was popular and credible.
AD candidate is a genuine progressive who is ready to run the affairs of the state like Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Chief Bola Ige and Chief Lam Adesina.
People of the state have experienced different administrations and can now identify genuine progressives and pretenders.
There is no controversy that AD government during Lam Adesina era meant well for the people of Oyo State; so AD is back to continue the good work.
Alliance for Democracy is on a winning mission to liberate our people from poverty and bring rapid development to all the nooks and crannies of the state, the D-G of the campaign organisation stated.
Ademola urged all AD supporters and party members not to be discouraged by the alleged attack on the party’s gubernatorial candidate on Dec. 28.
He recalled that some unknown men traced Oyedele to his campaign office in Oke-Itunu area of Mokola, Ibadan and smashed the window screens of his jeep.
The attackers followed the Nissan Armada jeep, marked KJA 502 FH, of the AD candidate into the premises of the campaign office.
The unknown men smashed the window screens of the jeep as it stopped but our candidate was smart enough to escape from the vehicle.
Though we do not know the motive behind this attack, it is very unfortunate that we see ourselves in this kind of mess now that the polity is heating up, he said.’’
Ademola urged the police and other security agencies to rise up to their responsibilities and ensure protection of lives and property of Nigerians as the elections draw nearer.

Nigeria Experiencing Dearth Of Qualitative Leadership –  Usman Bugaje

Gombe – For Nigeria to move forward and its citizens live meaningful lives, educated Nigerians have been called upon to move in and take over the leadership of the country from the current leadership that has shown lack of preparedness for governance.

Speaking during the maiden annual lecture of ‘Dr. Suleiman Kumo Memorial Lecture’ on the topic, ‘Politics, Development and the Future of Nigeria: the nexus, the worries and the way out’, Former Political adviser to Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Dr. Usman Bugaje, said Nigeria was experiencing a dearth in people-oriented leadership because educated Nigerians have allowed the leadership of the country to fall in the hands of those who have nothing to offer.

The frontline public analyst and one time National Secretary of the defunct Action Congress (AC) spoke as a guest speaker during the lecture organized by the Old Students of Gombe Children and High School in honour of the renowned philanthropist and educationists, Late Dr. Suleiman Kumo, Founder of the School.

According to Dr. Bugaje, the reason why Nigeria has not gotten it right and may not get it right, is because the crop of politicians ruling the country now are bereft of the knowledge needed to take the country out of its current sorry state and that educated people unfortunately fold their arms while the country decays.

He regretted that “In the last two decades, our country has seen hopes raised severally and hopes dashed severally, adding that, “the return to a democratic civilian dispensation in 1999, following a long term spell of military rule, quite naturally, created a lot of relief and raised a lot of hopes.

He said, “This is reflected in the voter turnout for the 1999 elections (over 50 percent) and the excitement associated with the return of democracy. Eight years later poverty only doubled, despite the unprecedented oil revenue that accrued to the Nigerian State.

According to him, “Another four years later, $16billion was spent on power without a single increase in one megawatts of electricity and yet no one went to jail. In the last three years or so, we became the country with the largest out of school children and the emerging poverty capital of the world.

He said, this disappointment with democratic rule was reflected in the increasing frustration and the creeping violence as more people became socially and economically excluded and that despite these signals, the quality of life as well as the standard of governance continued to go down as the country go further down its democratic road.

Speaking on the way out, Dr. Bugaje said Nigerians must prioritize leadership and educated persons must be at the vanguard of this cause. He also suggested that with the quality of Nigeria’s leadership significantly going down, “we must prioritize competence rather than loyalty which we have often been blind to.

Suggesting that more educated persons be involved in politics, Dr. Bugaje emphatically said, “There has always been a large pool of professionals and other expertise outside the dungeon of our criminal and violent political culture, but they have always hesitated to move in, less they soil their hands in murky field of politics.

Quoting Plato of Greek antiquity, he said “if one does not go through the pains of being in politics, then one must be prepared to be ruled by someone who is inferior.

He opined that one of the first tasks of the salvage mission is to bring in clarity in the political discourse and raise it from the current sentimental pedestrian level to rational scientific level where knowledge and competence will be driving governance.

Organizers of the lecture series who spoke through one of the old students, Abdulrahman Aliyu, said the aim of organizing the lecture series was to unite the old students in order to develop the school further.

He said the lecture series which is expected to bring renowned intellectuals to speak on burning national and international issues, would be an umbrella that will bring old students together to benefit from their relationships in terms of mentoring and other development issues.

The occasion witnessed the presence of many old students who are known civil servants, politicians and businessmen among many others. A mini launching was held with the aim of assisting the school. Political party aspirants, royal fathers, State commissioners also graced the occasion.

FULL TEXT: New Year Message from President Muhammadu Buhari

APC

Dear compatriots,

It is my utmost pleasure to rejoice with all Nigerians as we enter the year 2019, which will be a very significant one for our country.

  1. At the turn of every year, we often use the opportunity to look back at the past and forward to the future. To review the outgoing year, its high and low points, successes and failures, and be fully thankful to God.

  1. We Nigerians are religious people, and we believe that God reigns and rules in the affairs of men. A time like this offers a precious opportunity for thanksgiving, stock taking and reflection on goals and targets set for the preceding year, and how much was accomplished. The ones not done can then be rolled over into a new year.

  1. The dawn of a New Year is also a time to look forward. To consider new prospects, unfold our plans, and prepare for landmark dates and events.

  1. 2019 will be an election year for us. In about two months, the polls are due, and we will elect leaders into various offices, at national and state levels.

  1. As I welcome you into 2019, I also reiterate my many promises and declarations that the general elections will be free, fair and credible.

  1. Elections need not be do or die affair, and we should not approach that eventuality in a democracy with trepidation and mortal fear. Happily, a large number of presidential candidates have committed to peace, and peace we shall have.

  1. Those who continue to trumpet falsehood and negativity are on their own, fighting a losing battle. The greater number of Nigerians are trusting and believing that we shall deliver on our promises for a level playing field at the polls, and that is what we shall do.

  1. Nigerians desire peace, security, prosperity, inclusiveness and infrastructural development, a nation they can be proud of, a country that can hold its own among the nations.

  1. That is the journey we have embarked on since we came onboard in 2015, and we are not distracted as we move on. We are resolved to build a country in which the resources are utilized for the benefit of the largest number, and not appropriated by a privileged few in their never-ending quest to satisfy their greed.  We are on this mission together, and I assure you of a firm commitment to the ideals of a safe, secure, fair, just and prosperous country.

  1. We have had our challenges: security, economic, political, social. But we are resolved to combat and overcome them all.

  1. I appreciate your support and collaboration in previous years, and look forward to same in 2019, and beyond, as I hope you will renew the mandate you overwhelmingly gave us in 2015, for another term.

  1. We are motivated by nothing other than service to motherland, and service without selfishness or personal interest.

  1. I can assure you all that we are making steady and sustainable progress in all areas of national life. Those who are unbiased can see and appreciate the progress the country has made since 2015.

  1. A New Year provides opportunity for renewal of commitment, and I invite you to rededicate yourselves to the vision of a Nigeria that works for all.

  1. We are moving from potentials to actualization, and it’s a task to be accomplished by us all; man, woman, young, old, military, civilian, all Nigerians. Please come along, as we journey to the land of our dreams. Happy 2019.

  1. Thank you and God Bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
