World Leaders Set To Mark France D-Day Invasion,s 75th Anniversary

World leaders will gather in solemn assembly next week above the sandy beaches of Normandy to mark the 75th anniversary of the world-changing D-Day invasion of France. It’s typically a heartfelt tribute to alliance and sacrifice and a unified vow for enduring unity, outweighing any national or political skirmish of the moment.

In a report through stripes.com, that’s what has some U.S. veterans and others worried about President Donald Trump’s attendance. The president has shown a repeated willingness to inject nationalistic rhetoric and political partisanship into moments once aimed at unity. For Trump, there is no water’s edge for politics, no veneer of non partisanship around military or national security matters.

The president, who did not serve in the military before becoming commander in chief, has feuded with Gold Star families, has blasted political opponents on foreign soil, and mocked Sen. John McCain, a prisoner of war, for being captured by the enemy. Trump’s antipathy for the late senator was so well known that the White House this week requested that the Navy keep the USS McCain out of the president’s line of sight during a recent trip to Japan so as not to rile the president.

It’s a pattern that is set to get more scrutiny in coming days, as Trump heads overseas for the D-Day memorial, where he will be joined at the service by, among others, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, a Democrat whom he has called “crazy Nancy and has warned not to try to impeach him.

“It’s unfortunate we have to be even concerned that this historic commemoration will be overly politicized, but this is the command climate he’s created and the reality we have, said Paul Rieckhoff, founder and former head of the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America and now host of the podcast “Angry Americans. “We have to send our president. You go with the president we’ve got, and this is the president we’ve got. So we’re rightfully holding our breath for an event like this.

More than 9,000 Americans are buried in the cemeteries dedicated to the D-Day operation that marked a turning point in World War II, beginning the Allied push to drive the Nazis out of France and eventually Europe. On a bluff overlooking Omaha Beach, rows of white crosses and the Stars of David stretch as far as the eye can see — markers of sacrifices.

The president missed the other significant military commemoration of his term.

In November, also in France, Trump scuttled plans to honor the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I at Aisne-Marne American Cemetery. The White House said the president’s helicopter could not make it to the site because of bad weather. It did not explain why Trump could not make the 50-mile drive. His absence set off howls from many veterans.

Honeywell Defeats Ecobank In Final Judgement

The Honeywell Group recently emerged victorious in its protracted legal dispute against Ecobank with the judgement delivered by the Federal High Court, Lagos in which the court held that Honeywell’s payment of N3.5 Billion between 2013 and 2014 constitutes the full and final settlement of its indebtedness to Ecobank Nigeria Limited.

In a report through brandafriq.com, according to the judgement delivered by Justice Olayinka Faji, a valid agreement was reached at various meetings between representatives of Honeywell and Ecobank on the 22nd of July, 2013 and in line with this agreement, Honeywell made payments to the Bank in order to settle its indebtedness. However same could not be said of Ecobank who rather than keep to the terms of the Agreement, sought to introduce new terms.

The court further held that all through the course of the instalmental payments being made by Honeywell, Ecobank did not at any time raise any objections to the payments. The amount now being claimed by the bank was not at any time mentioned in the meetings or series of correspondence with Honeywell.

It will be recalled that Anchorage Leisures Ltd, Honeywell Flour Mills Plc. and Siloam Global Limited (all members of the Honeywell Group), in August 2015, instituted a suit before the Federal High Court, Lagos seeking the determination of whether or not the companies are truly indebted to the bank following the payment of the sum of N3.5 billion as full and final settlement of their obligations to Ecobank, based on a mutual agreement between Honeywell and Ecobank.

Testifying in court during the trial, Honeywell Group’s Head of Treasury and Finance, Oluwakemi Owasanoye told the court that by an agreement reached at a meeting held on July 22, 2013, the bank agreed to merge the collective indebtedness of Honeywell’s three subsidiaries, which amounted to N3.5billion.

Owasanoye added that part of the agreement reached with the bank was that N500million must be paid immediately, while the balance of N3billion would be paid before the exit of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) examiners from the bank. According to her testimony, Honeywell complied with the terms of the agreement, and thereafter wrote to inform the bank of its compliance and the need for the bank to formally discharge the company of any further obligation. She stated that the bank in its reply to the letter did not raise any objections. Honeywell, she said, was however surprised when the bank proceeded to demand for further payments in respect of the debt which had been fully liquidated for over a year.

She further stated in her testimony that when the dispute arose, the Company referred the matter to the Bankers’ Committee which resolved the matter in favour of Honeywell.

In his own testimony, Ecobank witness, Mr Elemi Agbor, Head of Corporate Communications of the bank, while being cross examined by Honeywell’s lawyer, Mr Olabode Olanipekun (SAN), insisted that the agreement for the payment was for a two-term payment only. He said the agreement stipulates that N500million must be paid that same day and the balance later. He was however unable to substantiate his assertion before the court.

The judgement of Justice Faji gives victory to Honeywell in the protracted legal tussle which commenced in 2015.

Yellow Vests Set To Relaunch Movement After Decline In Mobilization

The yellow vests called for demonstrations this Saturday and tomorrow throughout France with a view to relaunching the movement, after a decline in mobilization in recent weeks.

On the 29th Saturday of actions, several demonstrations are planned in this capital and in other cities of the country like Bordeaux, Montpellier and Strasbourg, while the leaders call for a massive attendance.

The aim is to reverse the downward trend in participation observed in recent weeks.

Last Saturday, the Ministry of the Interior reported a mobilization figure of 12,500 across France, much lower than the hundreds of thousands of demonstrators registered at the beginning of the movement.

The yellow vests began to take to the streets in November 2018 and although at first demonstrators opposed the increase in fuel prices decreed by the government, the demands extended to include taxes in general and the loss of purchasing power as a result of government policy.

Now they also demand that the Constitution be reformed for the sake of full democracy and that citizens have the possibility to ask for and promote the holding of national referendums on relevant issues.

Following A Sequence Of Deaths, 4 Of 8 Climbers Still Missing In India’s Himalayas

Four British people are believed to be among eight climbers missing in India’s Himalayas, following a spate of deaths on the mountains.

Local media reports say the group were attempting to reach the summit of India’s second-highest peak Nanda Devi in Uttarakhand.

In a report through skynews, the missing Britons have been named locally as group leader Martin Moran, John McLaren, Rupert Whewell and Richard Payne.

US nationals Anthony Sudekum and Ronald Beimel, Australian Ruth McCance, and Indian guide Chetan Pandey are also missing.

The group, led by Mr Moran, a UK-based mountain guide, left their base camp in Munsiyari on 13 May and were due to return on Friday.

A post on the Moran Mountain Facebook page on 22 May said the team had reached their second base camp at 4,870m.

A rescue team was sent out late on Friday night after the mountaineers failed to return to their camp, but rescuers are travelling on foot and are not expected to reach the area until this evening.

Local mountaineers said there had been a heavy avalanche on the group’s planned route.

A Foreign Office spokesperson said: “We are in contact with the Indian authorities following reports that a number of British nationals are missing in the Indian Himalayas.

“We will do all we can to assist any British people who need our help.”

This latest incident comes amid a deadly season on the Himalayas, with at least 17 people dying on the mountain range this year.

On Monday, American climber Christopher Kulish became the 11th person to die on Mount Everest in recent weeks.

Kevin Hynes, a 56-year-old from Ireland, died in his tent last month after texting friends to say the expedition was “proving the most fun he had had”.

British climber Robin Fisher, 44, died 150m (almost 500ft) below Everest’s summit on his descent.

The recent deaths are believed to have been exacerbated by a crowded route to the summit, causing delays, which some have blamed on the number of inexperienced climbers allowed to tackle the mountains.

British climber and former paratrooper Martin Hewitt described the situation as a “free-for-all”.

“Ultimately there are a number of people attempting this mountain that do not have the fitness, the experience, the technical skill or the credibility to realistically attempt a mountain like Everest within a relatively safe time frame, and there are bottlenecks on the mountain,” he said.

“There are areas where it is not really safe or practical to overtake other people.

“So when you have climbers who are not capable of climbing stuck in these locations, everybody else basically gets stuck behind them.”

A record 381 permits were issued to scale Everest for this climbing season.

Who Sold Nigeria To The British For £865k In 1899?

This is the story of the first oil war, which was fought in the 19th century, in the area that became Nigeria.

According to The Guardian, All through the 19th century, palm oil was highly sought-after by the British, for use as an industrial lubricant for machinery. Remember that Britain was the world’s first industrialised nation, so they needed resources such as palm oil to maintain that.

Palm oil, of course, is a tropical plant, which is native to the Niger Delta. Malaysia’s dominance came a century later. By 1870, palm oil had replaced slaves as the main export of the Niger Delta, the area which was once known as the Slave Coast. At first, most of the trade in the oil palm was uncoordinated, with natives selling to those who gave them the best deals. Native chiefs such as former slave, Jaja of Opobo became immensely wealthy because of oil palm. With this wealth came influence.

However, among the Europeans, there was competition for who would get preferential access to the lucrative oil palm trade. In 1879, George Goldie formed the United African Company (UAC), which was modelled on the former East India Company. Goldie effectively took control of the Lower Niger River. By 1884, his company had 30 trading posts along the Lower Niger. This monopoly gave the British a strong hand against the French and Germans in the 1884 Berlin Conference. The British got the area that the UAC operated in, included in their sphere of influence after the Berlin Conference.

When the Brits got the terms they wanted from other Europeans, they began to deal with the African chiefs. Within two years of 1886, Goldie had signed treaties with tribal chiefs along the Benue and Niger Rivers whilst also penetrating inland. This move inland was against the spirit of verbal agreements that had been made to restrict the organisation’s activities to coastal regions.

By 1886, the company name changed to The National Africa Company and was granted a royal charter (incorporated). The charter authorised the company to administer the Niger Delta and all lands around the banks of the Benue and Niger Rivers. Soon after, the company was again renamed. The new name was Royal Niger Company, which survives, as Unilever, till this day.

To local chiefs, the Royal Niger Company negotiators had pledged free trade in the region. Behind, they entered private contracts on their terms. Because the (deceitful) private contracts were often written in English and signed by the local chiefs, the British government enforced them. So for example, Jaja of Opobo, when he tried to export palm oil on his own, was forced into exile for “obstructing commerce. As an aside, Jaja was “forgiven in 1891 and allowed to return home, but he died on the way back, poisoned with a cup of tea.

Seeing what happened to Jaja, some other native rulers began to look more closely at the deals they were getting from the Royal Nigeria Company. One of such kingdoms was Nembe, whose king, Koko Mingi VIII, ascended the throne in 1889 after being a Christian schoolteacher. Koko Mingi VIII, King Koko for short, like most rulers in the yard, was faced with the Royal Nigeria Company encroachment. He also resented the monopoly enjoyed by the Royal Nigeria Company and tried to seek out favourable trading terms, with particularly the Germans in Kamerun (Cameroon).

By 1894, the Royal Nigeria Company increasingly dictated whom the natives could trade with, and denied them direct access to their former markets. In late 1894, King Koko renounced Christianity and tried to form an alliance with Bonny and Okpoma against the Royal Nigeria Company to take back the trade. This is significant because while Okpoma joined up, Bonny refused. A harbinger of the successful “divide and rule tactic.

On 29 January 1895, King Koko led an attack on the Royal Niger Company’s headquarters, which was in Akassa in today’s Bayelsa state. The pre-dawn raid had more than a thousand men involved. King Koko’s attack succeeded in capturing the base. Losing 40 of his men, King Koko captured 60 white men as hostages, as well as a lot of goods, ammunition and a Maxim gun. Koko then attempted to negotiate a release of the hostages in exchange for being allowed to chose his trading partners. The British refused to negotiate with Koko, and he had forty of the hostages killed. A British report claimed that the Nembe people ate them. On 20 February 1895, Britain’s Royal Navy, under Admiral Bedford attacked Brass and burned it to the ground. Many Nembe people died and smallpox finished off a lot of others.

By April 1895, business had returned to “normal, normal being the conditions that the British wanted, and King Koko was on the run. Brass was fined £500 by the British, £62,494 (NGN29 million) in today’s money, and the looted weapons were returned as well as the surviving prisoners. After a British Parliamentary Commission sat, King Koko was offered terms of settlement by the British, which he rejected and disappeared. The British promptly declared him an outlaw and offered a reward of £200 (£26,000; NGN12 million today) for him. He committed suicide in exile in 1898.

About that time, another “recalcitrant King, the Oba of Benin, was run out of town. The pacification of the Lower Niger was well and truly underway. The immediate effect of the Brass Oil War was that public opinion in Britain turned against the Royal Nigeria Company, so its charter was revoked in 1899. Following the revoking of its charter, the Royal Niger Company sold its holdings to the British government for £865,000 (£108 million today). That amount, £46,407,250 (NGN 50,386,455,032,400, at today’s exchange rate) was effectively the price Britain paid, to buy the territory which was to become known as Nigeria.

Don’t Allow Cultists Occupy Govt House, Dickson Warns Bayelsans

Yenagoa – Ahead of the November 16 governorship election in Bayelsa State, Governor Seriake Dickson has warned the people not to make the mistake of allowing “cultists and ungodly politicians” to occupy Government House after his tenure in February 2020.

Asking the people to reject such politicians, Dickson urged them to also ensure that politicians with devilish habits should not use political appointments as a bait to lure the persons into the destructive fold of cultism and that they should not have access to political control in the state.

A statement by his Special Adviser, Media Relations, Fidelis Soriwei, quoted the governor as having made the comment during the monthly praise night for May in Yenagoa on Thursday night.

He called on the people to be vigilant and supportive to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and to await the discovery of the leader God had picked to govern the state after him.

He stressed that the person anointed to lead the state was known to God and waiting to be discovered.

He predicted that the contest of the governorship of Bayelsa would be characterised by a lot of trials, temptations and fierceness because of the high price of the state.

Dickson said, “You should be vigilant and support your party and government. Pray for God’s direction. This earth has no power to give what God has not given. The leader God has anointed is there. He is waiting to be discovered.

“There will be a lot of trials, temptation because the price of Bayelsa is very high. Don’t be surprised if the conflict gets fierce. It will get hot before it gets cold. From 2012 to date, they did a lot of things, but we are still standing and counting.

“With your support, no man or woman who subscribes to evil, who does not know what is good, what is godly, shall ascend the throne, no one who initiates our children to cultism will be there.

“No cultist will ascend the seat of Bayelsa, none who will initiate our sons or brothers and sisters before they get one patronage or appointments or the other. And that is happening in some states, but it will not be our portion in Jesus name.â€

The governor also restated his call on the leadership of the ruling PDP to give between 20 to 30 percent of the councillorship positions as well as the Rural Development Areas to women and youths.

He said that the women and the youths should be encouraged with political positions as a reward for their wonderful support for the party over the years.

Dickson, who commended the men for accepting the proposal, added that the state would have the highest number of female councillors this year.
