Ed Sheeran and Justin Bieber reach eight consecutive weeks at Number 1 with I Don’t Care, as Ed claims three places in this week’s Official Singles Chart Top 10.

Stormzy’s latest single Crown climbs one to Number 4 following his landmark Glastonbury headline slot on June 28, Mabel secures her third Top 10 with Mad Love, climbing 5 places to Number 8, and Sigala and Becky Hill also reach the Top 10 for the first time with Wish You Well, up two to 9.

Dominic Fike rises six to Number 20 with 3 Nights, Young T & Bugsey reach a new peak with Strike A Pose ft. Further down, Chris Brown’s new single Don’t Check On Me feat. Justin Bieber and Ink debuts at 29, Mark Ronson and Camila Cabello rise six places to 31 with Find U Again, and Miley Cyrus rebounds seven places to 33 with Mother’s Daughter.

Finally, Kygo’s remix of Higher Love featuring vocals from Whitney Houston lands the late vocalist her first posthumous Top 40 hit since 2012, debuting at Number 36.

Bullets, blood and tears in unending ‘war’ between Ilaje and Ajah in Lagos

Bullets, blood and tears in unending ‘war’ between Ilaje and Ajah in Lagos

Inexplicably, the lingering bloody crisis has been largely kept out of public view. But deaths are being constantly recorded, with a growing IDP colony to boot. OLALEKAN OLABULO went deep into the heart of the bloodshed.

ISALE Ijebu and Ilaje are two communities between posh Victoria Garden City and Ajah, but the current crisis situation in the two Lagos communities is similar to the widespread insecurity in the north-eastern part of the country.  For reasons yet to be established, the devastating impact of the ongoing war between the Ilaje and Isale Ijebu communities is not attracting the urgent attention it should get, considering the magnitude of the bloody clashes in a state that is not experiencing a war.

Residents are daily fleeing the communities, while those who have decided to stay behind have become internally displaced persons and refugees.

Three policemen have been shot by the warring neighbours, while no fewer than seven people have been killed since the clash escalated again about two months ago. The situation is more worrisome with the fact that the police are working on a report that one of the communities brought in militants from the South-South geopolitical zone of the country. No one has yet been indicted.

87-year-old Ben Nwabueze leads Atiku’s legal team at tribunal

VGC as a facade

VGC, as Victoria Garden City is fondly called, and Ajah are two communities with modern architectural edifices and infrastructures but the two communities between them, Isale Ijebu and Ilaje, are nothing but a neglected slum. Apart from the fact that these two communities lack basic amenities, they share just a primary school and a secondary school.

The situation in Ilaje and Isale Ijebu areas of Ajah is one communal crisis that has resulted in students not going to school, traders not going to the markets and churches and mosques not opening for worship. Residents who have social engagements have been forced to postpone or cancel them.

Saturday Tribune investigations revealed that the crisis might not be unconnected with a vast expanse of land which at present is being occupied by the Ilajes on a riverine area with a mechanised dredging site. There have been accusations and counter-accusations from both communities on who is bullying who and who caused the crisis.

A senior police officer in the area who spoke with Saturday Tribune under the condition of anonymity said that although both communities have been at war since 2011, relative peace was restored  in the area until two months ago when hostility was renewed.

“It is a serious war between the two communities and they will not mention a single name. This community will be blaming the other, while people are being killed and houses are being destroyed,” the police chief said. He, however, blamed the crisis on the allegations by the Ilajes that the Ajah people were planning to take over their community and turn it into a modern estate.

Our story –Ilajes

Reverend Oduwole Oluwasegun, the public relations officer of the Ilaje indigenes in Ajah, spoke with Saturday Tribune on the raging war: “We have been here since 1886. This was proved by the tribunal that was set up on the last Ajah crisis. Our forefathers bought this land from them. Many of our people relocated to this area after the demolition of Moba in 1984 and Maroko in 1990. The waterside area was bought from the Aberoje family by the Olori Ebi, who resold it to the Ilajes.”

He said trouble started in 2011 “when they wanted to change the name of this area to Aberoje Street from the initial Ilaje Street. This action led to serious crisis and about 57 houses belonging to Ilaje people were burnt, while seven people were killed at that time. On 27th May, 2019, the Ajah boys invaded Ilaje where they looted properties, burnt houses and killed Mr Kehinde whose corpse is still lying in the mortuary. There was a day that four armed men from Ajah came into the community from a corner by the second transformer at the waterside. They shot repeatedly into different directions. They attacked a trader and collected N150,000 from her.

“The soldiers that came to our rescue on the 22nd of June, 2019 arrested two Ajah boys with guns and other dangerous weapons and those boys are being sponsored by the people who want to take over our land and build an estate on it. We have it on good authority that they want to send us away and build an estate on this land.”

On the latest crisis, the Ilaje spokesperson said, “The dredger company started working on the Ilaje water in 2015. The Ilajes did not benefit from them until the ones that came in October 2018 and out of the nine sites in Ilaje waterside, Ajah is controlling six, while three were given to the Ilajes. Even at that, their Baale still claims royalties on the three sites that are given to the Ilajes. The Ajah community has painted the Ilajes black before all Eti Osa indigenes and Lagosians as a whole. Is Ilaje not a dialect under Yoruba again?

“We had a peace meeting with the Area Commander, DPO and council chairman of Eti Osa Local Government and other stakeholders and at the end of the meeting, the two communities signed a peace accord on the 20th of June, 2019. A day after the signing of the peace accord, the Ajah people invaded Ilaje again and shot four people, including a policeman.”

‘We are in war situation here’

A member of the executive of the Ilaje union, who identified himself simply as Mr Irejuwa, described the situation in the area as war-like. He said on a daily basis, people were moving out of the area for fear of becoming the next victim. Many residents turn my house to an IDP camp whenever the Ajah boys invade our community.

“It is more worrisome that our children can no longer go to school. The only primary and secondary schools in the two communities are situated in a single compound in Olomu. Our children have not been going to school since the latest crisis started. They were harassed and intimidated by hoodlums around the school. Our women were sent away from the markets. That is the only market in this area.”

A resident of Ilaje, Ayo Ebiesuwa, said the situation had gone beyond what the government could ignore. The fish trader claimed that she and other traders from Ilaje were sent away from the Ajah market by fellow women from the Ajah end, saying, “They sent us away with canes. They told us not to come to their market again.”

Adesoji Omotoyole, a 19-year-old SS 1 student also said, “I have been attacked three times on my way to school. It was either the hoodlums or some of my mates in school that harassed us. They accused my brother of being one of the people who are fighting for the Ilaje people.”

Ade Kolawole, a tailor, while sharing his experience of the continuous communal crisis said, “It has been very difficult for most of the youth in Ilaje now. They cannot go out without being attacked. We now go out through Berger instead of the nearby Ilaje Bus stop. Our youth don’t work again. I am a tailor and most of my customers are in Ajah. I cannot go to them now.”

Ilajes crying wolf –Ajah

Reacting to all the allegations against the Ajah people, the secretary general of the community, Kazeem Odunlami, said the Ilajes are only crying wolf where there is none. He added that it was the Ilajes that had been attacking, raping, robbing and killing the Ajah people who, according to him, are the rightful owners of all the land in the area.

Odunlami not only denied that students were being chased back home from schools, but also that the Ilajes have been allegedly invading Ajah with external forces through the waterways. He also claimed that many residents have been rendered homeless as a result of the attacks on their homes.

“We are the host community and they are not disputing that. We are not fighting with them over any land. They are the ones causing problem. The authority over the land in Ajah lies with our Baale. The clash usually starts with them. They are cultists and they belong to different groups. They always attribute clashes between their rival cult groups to us. We don’t have to fight them over any land. Initially, we could not fathom what their grouse with us was but we realised later that they are entertaining fears that we want to take over their land and build an estate. One of them said it during one of our meetings. They are the ones bringing people through the waterways to attack us,” the Ajah town secretary said.

The community scribe added: “When they wanted to start the dredging business, they brought dredgers to the palace here and the Baale gave them his blessings. They said that they wanted to start mechanised dredging in the area and we did not disagree with them. For three years, nothing was brought to our Baale despite the fact that he has the right to collect royalties there. There are factions among them. They are fighting over the dredging site. Our Baale had been arrested following fictitious petitions from them in the past and he was always vindicated. He has no interest in their land. The latest crisis started between two brothers of the same father from their end. The two brothers belong to different cults and a clash ensued between the two groups at a naming ceremony on their side.”

‘We are refugees in our land’

Alhaji Kabiru Yekeen, secretary of the Ojupon/Ogunsemo ruling house in Ajah, also denied the claims by the Ilajes. He said instead, the Ajah indigenes were daily becoming refugees in their own land following constant attacks from the Ilajes.

“They are acting on the rumour that we want to take over their land. They act on that to attack our people wherever and whenever they find them. Only a few weeks back, one of our youth, Oloyo, was killed and his corpse burnt. Those who attempted to recover his body were also shot. They hide under cultism to attack us,” Alhaji Yekeen said.

Alhaji Rasak Odunlami, the Baba Oja of Ajah, also denied that any trader from Ilaje was sent out of the market. The Babaloja said the Ilajes were only using the claim that they were being sent out of the market to get unnecessary sympathy from the public.

He claimed that there were many ethnic groups even in Ilaje and that there was no way the market women in Ajah would have identified and singled out Ilaje women for expulsion from the market.

Wives raped in husbands’ presence?

It was also tales of woe from residents of Isale Ijebu as their houses were also allegedly burnt and destroyed by rampaging Ilaje militants, while their women were also reportedly raped in the presence of their husbands.

A trader in Ajah, Mrs Bilikis Eshinlokun, called on the Lagos State government to urgently intervene in the plight of the people of the area. The trader said a man, whose wife and daughter were raped, had relocated from the area.

“I have also abandoned my house for these people. They come with dangerous weapons, shooting and attacking people. They robbed, raped and attacked many residents of Isale Ijebu. I cannot sleep in this place again. I come out in the morning and return to sleep in another place in the evening. The government should act fast,” Mrs Eshinlokun said.

A student of Olomu Secondary School who pleaded for anonymity, in a chat with Saturday Tribune, also denied that the students who stayed away from school were chased away by hoodlums even though almost all the students from Ilaje had not been coming to school.

“One or two of them are still coming to school. Many of them have stopped coming since the clash started but nobody stopped them from coming to school. Maybe they are afraid of being attacked,” she said.

The image maker of the state police command, Bala Elkana, told Saturday Tribune that the police in the state had taken necessary measures to prevent recurrence of such clashes and restore the confidence of the two communities in the police.

“The Commissioner of Police, Zubairu Muazu, personally visited the communities and met with the leaders of the two communities and assured them of the readiness of the police to put a total end to the crisis. The commissioner had immediately created a buffer point for policemen to permanently stay in the communities till the crisis is completely over. Mobile and anti-riot policemen and Armoured Personnel Carrier have been deployed in the two communities,” Elkana said.

The police spokesperson denied the allegation that policemen were taking sides with one of the communities.

“It is not fair for anybody to say that the police are taking sides with any of the communities. It is the duty of the police to protect all citizens,” he explained

A senior police source in Ajah Area Command, while speaking with Saturday Tribune, said: “The Area Commander reacted to reports that some people were bringing militants from the Niger Delta to attack the other community. One of our men was shot. One needs to be very careful. Look at the terrain in Ilaje, it is very difficult to go in there and arrest anybody. The whole place may be engulfed in violence and it may get out of hand.”

Amsterdam Weighs Closing Curtains Of Red-Light District

Amsterdam’s mayor has proposed drawing the curtains over the notorious glass-fronted booths where prostitutes ply their trade, as part of an overhaul of the city’s red-light district.

Femke Halsema, the Dutch capital’s first female mayor, has presented four options for improving conditions for sex workers, cutting crime and reducing the burden of mass tourism in the area.

The proposals follow a series of interviews in which she has decried “the humiliation of women by large groups of tourists” as “unacceptable” and pledged to make fundamental changes.

The red-lit canal-side windows and sex shops of the De Wallen district are one of the biggest draws for the 18 million tourists who flock to the city every year.

“The traditional, licensed form of sex work in parts of the city centre is under pressure due to the growing number of visitors to Amsterdam,” said Halsema.

“For many visitors, the sex workers have become no more than an attraction to look at. In some cases this is accompanied by disruptive behaviour and a disrespectful attitude to the sex workers in the windows.

“At the same time, there has also been a major increase in unlicensed, underground prostitution.”

Under the mayor’s first option, “the curtains of the window brothels close” so that “sex workers and their workplaces are no longer visible from the street”.

Other suggestions include moving some of the window booths out of De Wallen to other areas of the city, or closing down all of the booths in the area and setting up a new red-light district elsewhere.

However, the city could also increase the number of window brothels in the red-light district from the current level of 330, while “the establishment of a sex work hotel is also a possibility”.

Lyle Muns, spokesman for My Red Light, a brothel collective, stressed that sex workers needed to have a central role in the discussions.

“Shutting workplaces without a good alternative would be very bad for sex workers,” he told the Daily Telegraph.

“But I am pleased they are looking at new workplaces outside De Wallen — the so-called prostitution hotels.”

The mayor will meet sex workers, residents and local businesses this month and the proposals will be discussed by the city council and its lawyers in September.

How Nigeria, operators lose billions of revenue over inactivity at seaports

Tribune Online
How Nigeria, operators lose billions of revenue over inactivity at seaports

seaports

On May 28, 2018, the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) appointed Stevedoring contractors to provide labour services at the nation’s seaports. The Stevedoring Contractors provide labour for loading and unloading activities at the ports, and they source this from registered dockworkers who are members of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN).

The foremost responsibility of stevedoring Contractors is about the safety of cargo, crew. The Stevedores unload cargo from ships when they come into ports and load until the cargo work is completed. In the curse of unloading or loading cargoes, the Stevedores also inspect the merchandise for any damage that might have occurred at sea or pre-loading.

For a country like Nigeria which is faced with many insecurity issues, the role of inspecting merchandise during loading and unloading processes by dockworkers provided by the Stevedoring firms cannot be over emphasized. Many dangerous cargoes that had been shipped into the country but detected during inspection by men of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) have their successes in some of the dockworkers who, while unloading cargoes, inform Customs officials of the contents of some of the inspected cargoes.

However, problem started when the IOC’s refused to pay the newly appointed Stevedoring contractors the wages of the dockworkers, and the workers vented their frustration of having to wait for over a year for their emblements by shutting down ports activities at all seaports nationwide.

Nigeria loses revenue

The withdrawal of services by the maritime workers since Wednesday implies that no activity has been taking place at the quay side of all port formations in the country. The quay side of the port is where containers are loaded or unloaded from ships. With no activity at the quay side of the ports, it implies that no new container was loaded or unloaded at the nation’s ports on Wednesday (the day strike commenced). With no activity at the quay side of the ports, the cargo throughput records of the terminal operators became altered.

According to a seaport worker, Ben Alibe, “when there is no activity at the quay side, it means no new cargo is offloaded at the ports, and this affects the projection of the terminal operators. The terminal operators already had a projection of the numbers of cargoes that they were going to take delivery of for that Wednesday when the strike began, but with no person working at the quay side, all such projections disappears and this has a multiplier effect on the nation because the terminal operators are tenants at the ports. They pay certain fees to the landlord, who is the NPA. So when the cargo projections of the terminal operators become altered, it also affects the monies that are expected to go into the coffers of government through the NPA. So you see that it is a chain reaction thing. Nigeria cannot afford to have inactivity at the quay side of port formations. It portends halt in revenue generation for the country.”

Haulage business suffer

The strike action also halted movement in and out of all port formations for about four hours on Wednesday before the workers soft-pedaled due to the announcement of a truce meeting between them and the IOC’s. For a nation that relies majorly on trucks evacuating cargoes from her ports, the implication of stopping movement in and out of the port can be dire.

In the words of the chairman of the Association of Maritime Truck Owners (AMATO), Chief Remi Ogungbemi, “we just hope the striking workers continue to let us have access into the ports because if they don’t, then a lot of the container deposit fees will be eroded because many of the truckers won’t be able to return empty containers back to the ports. Aside eroding of the container deposits fees, we won’t be able to pick new jobs, meaning while we are losing container deposits fees, we are not making new jobs.”

Importers groan

In the event that the truckers cannot go into the ports to pick already cleared containers, many cargoes will remain trapped inside the ports, thereby fueling the issue of demurrage surcharge or higher storage payments by the importers to the shipping companies or terminal operators respectively.

In the case of demurrage surcharges, the shipping companies slam this on cargoes that delay in being cleared. This could run into millions of naira depending on the volume of containers a vessel is carrying. The owners of the cargoes who are the importers are always at the receiving end of a demurrage surcharge because they pay the additional fees incurred on the cargo due to delay in clearance.

In the case of storage fees, this affects already cleared cargoes that are still trapped inside the ports due to the labour unrest. Explaining the dynamics of storage fees to the Nigerian Tribune, the vice-president of the Association of Nigerian Licensed Customs Agents (ANLCA), Kayode Farinto revealed that this is grouped in three stages.

“The first three days are the only free period that an importer has to clear his container from the ports. If the importer is unlucky, and there is congestion at the ports due to strike or whatever, he starts paying storage surcharges to the terminal operators immediately after the first three days.

“This payment is divided into three stages. We have First period, Second period and Third period. The First period is very cheap. It is for containers that have just finished exhausting their three days storage period.

“After the expiration of the First period, which is the first seven days after the three days-free storage period, if the container is still inside the port, it moves into the Second period stage where payments made as Storage or Demurrage charges is a little bit high.

“The next seven days are the Second period. If after the next seven days the container is still inside the ports due to congestion borne by the traffic gridlock, it moves into the Third period where payment becomes outrageous for the importer. At rhis stage, an importer would be paying nothing less than N20,000 per day as either demurrages fee to the shipping company or storage charges to the terminal operator.”

I am not intimidated by women in the catering industry —CEO, Mike and Mary’s

Tribune Online
I am not intimidated by women in the catering industry —CEO, Mike and Mary’s

business

Tell us a bit about yourself.

I’m Mike Ayodeji Adegun; I was born in Kaduna State, where we lived for over 12 years. I am a graduate of Agricultural Engineering from the Obafemi Awolowo University (O.A.U). I also hold an MBA from the same institution. I’m married to the beautiful Mary Abosede Adegun. We are blessed with two children, Oreoluwa and Eniifeoluwa Adegun. I’m the last and only son of four children. My parents are Mr. and Reverend (Mrs.) Mike Adegun. We are from Ogbomoso in Oyo State and I love to cook.

You studied agricultural engineering but you are today, a caterer?

I chose agricultural engineering because I wanted to learn more about large scale food production. My father thought I would study electrical and electronics Engineering because I was quite handy with electrical repairs around the house. Fortunately for me, I didn’t because I failed all the courses we had to take in that department.  Imagine if I actually went in for the course. So, I’m an engineer who now cooks for a living. After a couple of years in business, I decided to become a proper business administrator so I did an executive MBA in the same institution.

How come you are in the hospitality sector?

My mother, Irene Titilola Adegun, is the queen of hospitality. Always, it was either we were hosting parties, entertaining groups or housing family members. She was also very creative and spontaneous with her skills; she could make a party from a can of beans. She ran a successful catering outfit in Kaduna for majorly corporate organisations. When we were little, our house was literally a camp or guest house. We were always having guests around. We moved to Ibadan in the early 90’s. By default, I learnt from her. She took me through the whole home making experience and taught me every detail. I learnt housekeeping, cooking, baking, business growth and customer service from her. My mom turned me into ‘wife material’. My father, Mr. Mike Adegun taught me business administration, human resource management, business documentation and accounting. I learnt mainly by working closely with them and observing their activities. They made it a habit of making me tag along.

How did you start your catering business with Mike and Mary’s?

I met my wife while I was still working as the manager in Gloryland. She had come to train there and later was retained because she showed so much dexterity and industry. I remember saying, at her graduation, that her husband would be a very lucky man. If only I knew I would be that lucky man, I probably would have trained her more. After about 12 years of service with Gloryland, we decided to venture out and start something of our own. We had the skill and knowledge but no capital, client base, manpower, equipment and brand recognition. We just had ourselves and experience. So I asked my wife, what do we have and what can we do with what we have? We both could cook, so we started making lunch packs, soups and stews and little things we could supply to offices, schools and individuals. We went back to the basics of food business. I had to do other side jobs to fund the startup. I did trainings and seminars, public speaking engagements, car hire services, event security and protocol.  I remember driving one of my clients to the airport and he was stunned by my fluency wondering how an ordinary cab driver was so fluent. I remember another occasion where I was having business meetings in the lobby of the hotel where I brought my client to spend the night. I often just slept in the car to save cost. We were able to start getting recognition and repeat orders. Those who once ordered 10 plates started to order 50 and 100. Those who didn’t call us back, we learnt from the experience and covered up the lapses. As we gathered funds little by little, we started to acquire our hardware and equipment little by little. We went from borrowing friends’ vans to owning our own trucks. We appreciate God and everyone who took a chance on us when we didn’t have a performance bank.  As the jobs grew bigger, we expanded our capacity to meet up. Hence, Mike and Mary’s events company limited.

What were other challenges faced over the years and how did you overcome them?

If you have never had to start your business from zero, you probably don’t have a solid structure. Our biggest challenge was accurately evaluating the business environment and creating a product and service that was accurate for our vision. It takes a while to accurately understand and decrypt what your target audience wants and what they are willing to pay for it. This is the part or season where many come back home empty handed in business. It’s like going to the market to bargain for a product, there’s a maximum you can pay and there’s a minimum he can sell. If you are able to reach a compromise that suits both parties, you have a win-win. That’s when real business can begin. The first few years of starting up were tough and difficult. Breaking into the market with an already established reputation was proving to be an uphill task. So we had to reintroduce ourselves with smaller concepts that were easy to swallow. Persistence, flexibility and adaptability are also key survival attributes. You must be willing to learn, unlearn and relearn to stay relevant.

Your outfit is one of the biggest in Nigeria. Do you just cook for parties or you do more?

We are the buffet kings. We understand the science of a buffet. We cater for all events ranging from private, corporate, government, political, religious and social events. We have other well developed departments like logistics and haulage, tent and accessories, event management and protocol, training and service support.

The event industry is really booming in Nigeria. Seeing that it is mostly women dominated industry, how do you cope?

I grew up among three beautiful sisters and their friends. I am not intimidated by a room full of women. What I found out is that everyone has their strengths and weaknesses. A female event planner may be better for a wedding but a male will handle a corporate event better that’s assuming they are on the same skill level. What I did was to train and develop capable male and female hands in almost all areas to answer whenever it is necessary. Once I suspect the client is more comfortable with a particular gender, I push the right person forward. We also can’t deny that the boom has also come with an influx of mediocres. This has affected the scope of the competition a little but it’s a matter of time. The boys will eventually be separated from the men.

What other projects are you involved in?

I’m currently working with a friend on an international social campaign which we hope to launch this year. I am very busy on the political scene and may run for office if I feel led. I also have a project targeting teenage boys to help them develop healthy relationships within themselves called ‘Boys Nest’. We observed many of our sons are not fully expressing themselves due to a sudden shift in societal perception. Boy on boy friendships are deemed suspicious, those who are close are termed gangs and others who just stay on their own are often called queers.  Boys were made to be energetic, noisy, boisterous, and enthusiastic and have a deep sense of camaraderie. If we don’t teach them how to form positive groups and relationships, they would be forced into unhealthy and toxic companionships.

How do you relax?

Someone said “solitude is dangerous, the moment you discover it; it becomes very addictive”. I enjoy being alone at the end of the day mostly. I love audio books and messages. I listen to jazz and juju of the 80’s. I love to travel, not necessarily for the destination but for the time of solitude in-between. I also love to watch comedies like ‘Two and a half men’, ‘How I met your mother’, ‘Friends’ and a few others. I don’t really play any sport actively and I don’t really enjoy watching football. I also love watching praise and worship musical videos.

Muslim group preaches integrity, excellence in the workplace

Muslim

STRICT adherence to high moral principles and professional standards is as an essential condition for the attainment of excellence and realisation of lofty personal and corporate goals.

This was the consensus of speakers at a symposium organised by the Professional Department (Southern Region) of the Majlis Tajdeed Tadhamunil Muslimeen Association (MTTMA), which was held last weekend at the Western Hall of the Oyo State Government Secretariat in Ibadan.

The trio of Alhaji Kafaru Idowu, Human Resources Business Partner, Nigerian Eagle Flour Mills Limited; Professor Abdul Lateef Agbaje of the Department of Pure and Applied Biology, Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso and Alhaji AbdusSalam AbdurRazaq Awayewaserere, Director Public/Corporate Affairs, Voice of Nigeria (VON), gave talks at the event tagged “Celebration of Professional Icon and Professional Ethics Symposium” with the theme “Professional Ethics: Implication for Career Growth and Development.”

At the symposium, which drew various professionals from across the southern states of the country, the resource persons were unanimous in their description of honesty, truthfulness, honour, reliability and uprightness as attributes of forward-thinking individuals and traits prized by progressive organisations – commercial or otherwise.

They particularly urged Muslims to prioritise self-development and let their exploits and accomplishments in the workplace promote Islam.

Speaking on “Managing Ethical Challenges on the Path to Career Accomplishment,” Alhaji Idowu averred that “no matter how big or small an organisation is, values and ethics are important, because they promote positive personal and interpersonal behaviours.”

According to him, ethical behaviour among workers in an organisation ensures that the employees complete work with honesty and integrity.

He listed recognition and control inside and outside organisation as part of the reward for possessing firm principles in the workplace.

Alhaji Idowu advised all workers to be their best professional and social selves at all times and respect all stakeholders, irrespective of their nature, in the course of their career journeys, adding, however, that “a good dose of emotional intelligence, professionalism and focus is required to manage adversity.”

On his own part, Professor Agbaje spoke on “Gown-Town Personnel Management Model: The Role of the Ivory Tower in Creating and Maintaining an Ethically Healthy Workplace.”

The don underlined the imperativeness of freeing institutions of higher learning, especially universities, from favouritism, intimidation and victimisation, extortion, graft, sex for marks and admission and certificate racketeering for the attainment of ethically healthy workplace in Nigeria’s academic environment.

He stated that seeking knowledge is obligatory on every Muslim and called for better funding of education in the country for the proper training of responsible emerging leaders.

According to him, without a focused, creative and progressive gown – which symbolises scholars and students – the society is at the risk of being in perpetual retrogression because the gown represents its knowledge base and a measure of its advancement.

He urged Nigerian educational institutions to pursue excellent researches, generate knowledge and train quality manpower for nation building and advancement of mankind.

Alhaji AbdurRazaq Awayewaserere, in his own presentation, urged Muslims to see their professional practices as an opportunity to establish faith in the workplace and as such, they must strive to be the best versions of themselves.

To survive the odds in the society, he said the faithful must deepen the levels of their faith, intellectual capacity, professional competence, hard work and personal morality.

Alhaji AbdurRazaq Awayewaserere appealed to all Muslims in the professions to always remember that their actions and inaction will reflect on Islam and that they owe a duty to the Muslim community in their environments as a privileged lot.

A high point of the event was the presentation of the 2019 Professional Icon Award to Professor Ahmed Adedeji, the Director-General of Foresight Institute of Research and Translation, Ibadan.

The programme was also attended by Professor Mondiu Durowoju of LAUTECH, Mr Olawale Abdullah of the Oyo State Ministry of Justice, Dr Ahmad Osundina, a medical consultant with the University of Medical Sciences, Ondo State and Mr Oladepo Yusuf,  an internal auditor with Trustbond Mortgage Bank Plc, who are both key officers of the professional group.

Other personalities in attendance were Pharmacist Ganiyu Abideen of Jericho Chest Hospital, Ibadan; Mr AbdSemiu Odenike, Director of Works, Fountain University, Osogbo; Dr Busari AbdWasi, a consultant nephrologist at Gbagada Hospital and Managing Ditrector, Solace Hospital, Lagos; Mr Kadiri Odelade and Mr Kamoru Salaudeen, both of Fountain University, Osogbo.

Meaning and essence of prayer

Tribune Online
Meaning and essence of prayer

prayer

HUMAN beings have been praying for as long as humanity has existed.  Rich or poor, literate or illiterate, the urge to pray is equally present in all.  A well-known author has best described this as follows:

“In wandering over the earth, you can find cities without walls, without science, without rulers, without palaces, without treasures, without money, without gymnasium or theatre, but a city without temples to gods, without prayer, oaths and prophecy, such a city no mortal has ever seen and will never see.”  [Humanity and Deity, p. 15, by W. M. Urban]

The urge to pray is universal in character and crosses racial, cultural and religious boundaries.

When we pray, what really happens to us? The prayer normally consists of reciting some words and possibly some body movements. This is true in all religions—only the forms may be different.  Do the words have any effect on the individuals who pray? From the study of Psychology, we know that words have powerful effect on individuals as well as people. But for that to happen, it is necessary that words are clearly understood and their meaning and context fully comprehended. This ensures that the mind actively participates in the prayer also along with the body. Without this, the prayer will become a somatic routine, regardless of how much piety is attached to it from outside.

Thus we see that prayer has a very deep connection with the mind. But this mind-body connection, although made sincerely, should not be superficial that only produces a placebo effect. This has to be real. And a real connection can be established only when the power and the meaning of prayer activate the mind’s cognitive faculty. But many religions leaders, on the other hand, have perpetuated a myth which keeps people satisfied by performing the act of prayer without trying to establish this mental cognitive connection. We are told that the very act of prayer gives us plenty of rewards.

As far as prayer is concerned, religious leaders are very particular to mention—and rightly so, that it occupies a central place in religion. But mostly the emphasis is more on the act of prayer rather than its spirit and purpose.  Performing the act of prayer seems to be an end in itself. But there is no emphasis on the fact that prayer is a means to achieve some concrete goals in life. This aspect of prayer is normally overlooked and consequently the prayer becomes a soulless ritual done primarily to please God and for individual personal salvation in the hereafter.

Why do we pray? A simple, conventional answer may be that we pray because our forefathers have been praying and told us to pray, just as we tell our children to pray. Or that we pray because God has asked us to pray. But for many people who are sincerely searching for a more meaningful answer, this may not be satisfactory. First of all, God has given us freedom of choice for everything, including prayer. So, we do not have to pray if we do not want to.  In fact, in good times, most of us don’t. Only when some personal tragedy strikes (or when we reach old age) that many of us start praying regularly.

For example, consider a plane full of people about to crash. In this helpless situation, everyone will be praying for life and survival. If the situation seems completely hopeless, and they realise that they are going to lose their lives, people will be praying for God’s mercy, forgiveness, His pleasure, and personal salvation in the hereafter. But nevertheless, everyone will be trying his/her best to survive until the very end.

This instinct of self-survival is inherent in every living being, including humans. Other beings have defence mechanisms given by God for their survival. But humans find themselves helpless and defenseless against many living beings and natural catastrophes. Naturally primitive man tried to pray to them, as he had not developed tools for self-defence. He prayed to various natural objects that threatened or benefited his survival. When human beings developed tools for self-defence and gradually advanced in science, they tended to drift away from religion. They found security in science (rather than prayer) because science gave them control over the forces of nature.

Thus we see that there seems to be no single reason as to why people pray.  Everyone can come up with his or her own answer and feel satisfied. In fact, this is what we normally do.

The Arabic word “salaat” is normally translated as prayer in English. But the root meaning of salaat is “to follow someone closely.” For example, in a horse race, if the second horse follows the first horse so closely that its head is always overlapping the first horse’s body, then it is called “Al-Musalli,” and the first horse is called “Saabiqun.”  [Taj-al-‘Urus, vol. 10, page 213; Lisan-al-‘Arab, vol. 7, page 39]  Therefore, salaat means to follow Allah closely. The Qur’an uses the term “aqeemus salaat” quite often which is usually translated as “establish prayer.” This translation does not fully convey the meaning of the original concept. The root of “aqeemu” comes from “qaa-ma,” which means to stand, to be balanced, to have a just, fair and long-term strategy for dealing with problems, and to be steadfast.

Therefore, aqeemus salaat means “to establish Salaat” as a permanent and balanced system in which human beings can follow the divine code in all aspects of their lives individually, as well as collectively. Only when a group of people has willingly accepted, understood and been convinced of its truth with deep conviction (iman) and want to lead their lives by this divine code that this system of salaat can be implemented. This is the process our Prophet (PBUH) followed and therefore, is his sunnah. The Prophet (PBUH) and the Sahaba (R) did not pray for their personal salvation or just to please God. Their entire life was devoted to fulfilling the goal of establishing the system of salaat in the society. ‘Aisha (R) is reported to have said that the Prophet (P) was a “walking Qur’an.”  This means that he was leading his life by the Qur’an. He also made certain that his companions were living by it as well. The Quranic way of life cannot be led individually or alone. It must be done collectively as an ummah under a system driven by the divine laws. The only way to do this (according to the Qur’an and shown by the Prophet (PBUH)) is to replace the old system based on lifeless and soulless rituals with a new one based on the Quranic concept of salaat.

Praying five times a day is only one part of salaat. When we finish our prayers in the masjid, we are not done with salaat. It is not something to do and finish. It involves every aspect of life, keeping it within the guidelines of the divine code 24 hours a day. This system was originally established by our Prophet (PBUH) and the Sa’haba (R). Five times a day our prayers are meant to renew and reinforce our commitment to steadfastly enforce the system of salaat ordered by Allah and practically shown to the humankind by the Prophet (PBUH). This renewal boosts our psychological energy to come together and support each other towards the goals of the Qur’an. This is how Allah’s laws can be engrained within us; this is how the Prophet (PBUH) and the Sa’haba (R) found it so natural to follow the Qur’an, and the results they produced within 30 years speak for themselves. Needless to say, our prayers are not producing the same results although we have been praying for more than a thousand years in ever increasing numbers.

‘Very Disappointed’ Manfred Weber Blames Macron, Orbán

Manfred Weber, whose bid to be European Commission president was firmly rejected by EU leaders, blamed French President Emmanuel Macron and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán for his downfall, and said there were “powerful forces who did not want to accept the election result.”, According to Politico.eu.

“There were backroom talks and late-night sessions in which the Macron and Orbán axis prevailed and the Spitzenkandidat system was dismantled,” Weber told Bild on Thursday. “This is not the Europe I want and I will continue to fight for the democratization of the EU.”

Weber was the center-right European People’s Party’s Spitzenkandidat, or lead candidate, in the European election. After the EPP emerged as the largest group in the election, despite losing seats, many in the EPP believed Weber should become Commission president.

But his candidacy came in for sustained criticism, and EU leaders on Tuesday nominated another German conservative — Defense Minister Ursula von der Leyen — for the Commission post.

Macron — a leading opponent of the Spitzenkandidat system — was one of Weber’s biggest critics, saying he had insufficient “experience” and “credibility.”

Orbán withdrew his support for Weber after the German pledged not to accept the position of Commission president if his success depended on the support of Hungary’s ruling Fidesz party. Before then, Weber had faced a barrage of criticism from his opponents on the campaign trail regarding his close relationship with Orbán.

Weber said the attacks on him were “surprising” as “Macron’s [European] election campaign was particularly directed against Orbán.”

“Macron said ‘vote for my Europe, not for Orbán’s.’ And suddenly they are working together and damaging democratic Europe. Now we are in a shambles.”

Weber also told Bild “it is clear that Viktor Orbán has payed me back” because of Weber’s criticism of Budapest’s “restriction of fundamental rights.”

Weber admitted that the past week had not been easy for him. “On the other hand, this is the Champions League, so you have to be able to take it. Giving up is not an issue for me. I’m burning for the European idea,” Weber said.

Asked whether he could explain what happened, Weber said: “I find it very difficult to explain … I can only say to my voters that there were powerful forces who did not want to accept the election result.”

Weber on Tuesday officially withdrew from the race for the European Commission top job, announcing he would instead continue as the leader of the conservative group in the European Parliament. He did not stand to be president of the Parliament.

“I’m very disappointed, that’s for sure,” Weber said, but added he “will support Ursula von der Leyen” and found her an “appropriate” choice.

Putin Says Russian Submarine In Fatal Barents Sea Accident Was Nuclear-Powered

Russian President Vladimir Putin disclosed on Thursday for the first time that a secret military submarine hit by a fatal fire three days ago was nuclear-powered, prompting the defense minister to assure him its reactor had been safely contained, According to Arctictoday.com.

Russian officials have faced accusations of trying to cover up the full details of the accident that killed 14 sailors as they were carrying out what the defense ministry called a survey of the seafloor near the Arctic.

Moscow’s slow release of information about the incident has drawn comparisons with the opaque way the Soviet Union handled the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear power station disaster, and another deadly submarine accident — the 2000 sinking of the nuclear-powered Kursk, which claimed 118 lives.

Russia, which says the details of the submarine involved in the latest accident are classified, said the fire took place on Monday, though it was only officially disclosed late on Tuesday.

Until Thursday there was also no official word on whether the vessel had a nuclear reactor, despite strong interest from neighboring Norway.

Putin revealed that the submarine had been nuclear-powered by asking Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu during a Kremlin meeting about the reactor’s condition after the fire.

“The nuclear reactor on the vessel is completely isolated,” Shoigu told Putin, according to a Kremlin transcript. “All the necessary measures were taken by the crew to protect the reactor, which is in complete working order.”

The fire erupted in the submarine’s battery compartment, Shoigu added, and later spread.

Although the Kremlin publicized the meeting on Thursday morning, it was not immediately clear when the men had met.

“There has not been any formal communication from Russia to us about this,” Per Strand, a director at the Norwegian Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority, told Reuters when asked if it had been informed that the submarine was nuclear-powered.

“We understand they brought the situation under control quickly, under difficult conditions, and there was, as such, no nuclear incident that they were obligated to tell us about.

“Still, we would have been happy to have been informed of such incidents,” he added.

Russian servicemen attended a memorial service on Thursday in the port city of Kronstadt near St. Petersburg in honor of the 14 dead submariners.

Held in the hulking Russian Orthodox Naval Cathedral of St. Nicholas, sailors cradled lit candles and looked on as priests read out prayers and a choir chanted in the background.

Shoigu, a close Putin ally, told the president that the submarine, which authorities said had been operating in the Barents Sea area, would be fully repaired.

“Right now, we are assessing how long it will take, how much work there is, and how we can carry it out,” he said.

Shoigu’s ministry has released photographs of the deceased sailors, hailing them as “real patriots of the Motherland”.

Separately, a photograph of a tribute to them circulated on social media which appeared to have been hung on the wall of a Russian military facility. Reuters could not immediately confirm its authenticity, but it said the men had served on board a deep-sea submersible known by the designation AS-31.

Russian media have previously reported, without official confirmation, that the vessel was designated as either AS-31 or AS-12 and is designed to carry out special operations at depths where regular submarines cannot operate.

The submarine is made up of a series of inter-connected spheres that allow it to resist water pressure at great depths. Western military experts have suggested it is capable of probing and possibly even severing undersea communications cables.

Putin ordered Shoigu to prepare posthumous state awards for the dead submariners. An official investigation into the accident, likely to be shrouded in secrecy, is already underway.

Italian Airline Apologizes For Promotional Video With Actor Playing Obama In Blackface

An Italian airline has “deeply apologized” after one of its promotional videos featured an actor wearing blackface in an apparent attempt to portray former U.S. president Barack Obama, According to Time.com.

Alitalia, Italy’s flag carrier airline, quickly faced backlash on social media for the video, which was promoting the airline’s new nonstop flight route from Rome to Washington. The video, which has since been removed from the company’s social media channels, depicted ‘Obama’ finding his way to Washington; three other videos in the series included actors playing President Trump, George Washington and Abraham Lincoln making similar trips.

“The ad is ‘unwatchable.’ It paints a perfect picture of a sovereignist little Italy that is proud of its ignorance and still remembers Obama as the “handsome and tanned” president, as Berlusconi once described him,” said Leonardo de Franceschi, a researcher at the University of Rome who confronted the airline over the advert on Facebook.

According to the New York Times, an airline representative initially responded by defending the video, saying that the actor playing Obama’s character was not Caucasian and that “makeup was applied to highlight features.” (Though a photo from the actor’s Instagram page that appears to show him at the beginning of the ‘makeover’ suggests his skin was darkened for the video.)

Alitalia also told another commenter they were “exaggerating” with their criticism, per Al Jazeera, but later walked back the comments and pulled the video from its social channels. “For our Company, respect for everyone is mandatory,” the airline said in a statement posted on social media July 3. “It was never our intention to hurt anyone and we will learn from what has happened.”

Shrinking Rural New Mexico Villages Putting Churches At Risk

Shrinking populations in rural New Mexico villages are putting aging churches at risk since the buildings aren’t receiving the same upkeep as previous generations, According to Thestar.com.

The Albuquerque Journal reports the Santa Teresita Church in Mora County is one of several participating in a fundraising project to benefit some of the state’s “endangered” historic churches in an effort to save the structures.

Through cultural events starting this month, organizers of the Nuevo Mexico Profundo project hope to raise money to preserve the churches that sit in villages across the state.

Nuevo Mexico Profundo is the brainchild of Frank Graziano, an author and former professor of Hispanic Studies who lives in Chamisal.

His inspiration came from research and trips he made for his recently published book, “Historic Churches of New Mexico.”

UK Seizes Syria-Bound Oil Tanker In Gibraltar

The Grace 1 tanker was impounded in the British territory at the mouth of the Mediterranean Sea, after sailing around Africa from the Gulf. Shipping data reviewed by Reuters suggests it had been loaded with Iranian oil off the coast of Iran, although its documents say the oil is from neighboring Iraq.

The Gibraltar authorities who seized it did so under the authority of European sanctions against Syria that have been in place for years, with no reference to the source of the oil.

But the likelihood that the cargo was Iranian draws a link between this incident and a new U.S. effort to halt all global sales of Iranian crude, in what Tehran has described as an illegal “economic war” against it.

European countries have tried to stay neutral in that confrontation, which saw the United States call off air strikes against Iran just minutes before impact last month, and Tehran amass stocks of enriched uranium banned under a nuclear deal.

In a statement, the Gibraltar government said it had reasonable grounds to believe that the Grace 1 was carrying its shipment of crude oil to the Banyas refinery in Syria.

“That refinery is the property of an entity that is subject to European Union sanctions against Syria,” Gibraltar Chief Minister Fabian Picardo said. “With my consent, our port and law enforcement agencies sought the assistance of the Royal Marines in carrying out this operation.”

‘So public, so aggressive’

The incident appears to be the first in which European authorities have seized a tanker for allegedly violating Syria sanctions, which have been in place since 2011.

“This is the first time that the EU has done something so public and so aggressive. I imagine it was also coordinated in some manner with the U.S., given that NATO member forces have been involved,” said Matthew Oresman, a partner with law firm Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman who advises firms on sanctions.

“This is likely to have been meant as a signal to Syria and Iran – as well as the U.S. – that Europe takes sanctions enforcement seriously and that the EU can also respond to Iranian brinkmanship related to ongoing nuclear negotiations.”

Iran has long been supplying its allies in Syria with oil despite such sanctions. What is new now is U.S. sanctions on Iran itself. They were imposed last year when President Donald Trump pulled out of an agreement that guaranteed Tehran access to world trade in return for curbs on its nuclear program.

Those sanctions have been tightened sharply since May, effectively forcing Iran off of mainstream crude markets, making it desperate for alternative ways to sell oil and more reliant on its own tanker fleet to store supplies it cannot sell.

The U.S.-Iranian confrontation has escalated in recent weeks, taking on a military dimension after Washington accused Tehran of attacking tankers in the Gulf and Iran shot down a U.S. drone. Trump ordered air strikes but called them off at the last minute, later saying too many people would have died.

European countries opposed Trump’s decision to exit the nuclear deal last year, and they have promised to help Iran find alternative ways to export. But they have so far failed to ease the impact of U.S. sanctions, with all major companies halting plans to invest.

Iran has said it wants to keep the nuclear deal alive but cannot do so indefinitely unless it receives some of the promised economic benefits. In the past week, it announced that it had accumulated more low-enriched uranium than allowed under the deal, and it says it will refine uranium to a greater purity than the deal allows from July 7.

By restricting Iran’s ability to move oil around the globe, the U.S. sanctions have choked off Tehran’s Syrian allies.

Government-controlled areas of Syria suffered acute fuel shortages earlier this year resulting from what Assad described as an economic siege. In May, Syria received its first foreign oil supplies for six months with the arrival of two shipments including one from Iran, a source familiar with the shipment said at the time.

Earlier this year, Reuters revealed that the Grace 1 supertanker was one of four tankers involved in shipping Iranian fuel oil to Singapore and China, in violation of U.S. sanctions.

The UAE Begins Pulling Out Of Yemen

After four years of fierce fighting and international outrage, the United Arab Emirates (uae) is quietly slipping out the back door. Over the past few weeks it has begun to withdraw men and materiel from Yemen, where it is part of a Saudi-led coalition fighting against the Houthis, an Iranian-backed Shia militia that controls large parts of the country. The uae has not commented on the drawdown. But foreign diplomats and eyewitnesses confirm it is happening.

The proximate cause is growing fear of conflict with Iran. Tensions have climbed steadily since America withdrew last year from the agreement struck in 2015 that imposed limits on Iran’s nuclear programme. In May four oil tankers were sabotaged near the uae port of Fujairah. America blamed Iran. The Emirati foreign minister, in a sign of his country’s nervousness, says it is too early to assign blame. “The uaeare playing it very cool because they understand how vulnerable they are,” says a Western defence official.
