10th WSICE holds in three states

NINE years after it was last held in Lagos, some activities of the 10th annual Wole Soyinka International Cultural Exchange (WSICE), will happen in the Centre of Excellence

Held to celebrate the birthday of the Nobel Laureate since 2010, the 10th WSICE, marking the 85th birthday of Prof Soyinka, and a decade of consistent programming by the Teju Kareem and Professor Segun Ojewuyi-led Open Door Series will hold from July 12 to 15 in Lagos, Abeokuta, Ogun State (its home for the past eight years) and Akure, the Ondo State capital.

While most students/youth-focused programmes like Essay Writing, Workshop, Youth Creative Expressions would still take place in Abeokuta, the mentoring session will hold in Akure. The adult session – Advocacy session, drama, dance and poetry performances, film screening and book presentations amongst others would hold at Freedom Park, Lagos Island.

Oshiomhole backs Governor Bello on indirect primaries

On Friday, July 12, the advocacy session exploring Soyinka’s body of works to reflect on the concepts of Rights, Honour, Respect, Patriotism, Tolerance and Humanism will hold in the Kongi’s Harvest Art Gallery, Freedom Park.  It will be followed by the presentation of three books, the first being a compilation of winning essays by past winners of the annual WSICE essays competition titled ‘Memo on our Future: Essays by Nigerian Childrenas inspired by Wole Soyinka’s Visions’. The second book is ‘Igho goes to School’, a children book by the culture journalist, AnoteAjeluorou, which reprint has been facilitated by the WSICE — to be distributed to about 1000 students across the country; and introduction of ‘The Soyinka Impulse: Essays on Wole Soyinka’ edited by Duro Oni and Bisi Adigun. It is published by Bookcraft and is a collection of presentations by scholars during an international conference held during Soyinka’s 80th birthday five years ago.

The Creative Majesty Theatre Company will present Soyinka’s ‘Childe Internationale’ later that afternoon while an interdisciplinary artist and activist based in Los Angeles, California, Rebecca Jackson-Moeser, will coordinate the Projection Theatre segment featuring the Kendrick and McKenzie multiple projection surfaces.  The day’s event would be rounded off with a musical and poetry session, featuring performers at the Food Court.

On July 13, Soyinka’s birthday, 85 preselected students from schools around Nigeria will participate in the Essay Writing Competition at the Ijegba Forest Theatre close to Soyinka’s home in Abeokuta.  Do Your Own Thing, a talent display event will happen at the same venue.  The 85 finalists will have the opportunity of asking Prof Soyinka any question of their choice the following day at an interaction with him in his residence while the results of the essay competition would also be announced.

Wife of the Ondo State Governor, Mrs Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu, will mentor the 85 students alongside other 500 senior secondary school students from the state on Monday, July 15 in Akure. The participants will also be presented with copies of the WSICE @ 10 books, ‘Memo to our Future… ‘and ‘Igho Goes to the Farm’ at the occasion.

Speaking on the celebration, Co-Executive Producer of the WSICE, Kareem explained that it’s not a mere festival or party of Soyinka’s birthday. “The OpenDoorSeries/WSICE is not to be misconstrued as a mere celebration of Wole Soyinka’s date of birth – the man is not, in any way, really interested in such vanities as staging a party to celebrate his yearly birthday. The project is designed to celebrate the quintessential artiste as a renowned promoter of the good of humanity. And especially to set his exemplary philosophies and visionary ideas as promoted in his works and lifestyle as real examples for peoples across race, gender, age, religious and political persuasions, especially the young ones, who need models they can relate to,” he said.

Kareem also disclosed why the celebration is being taken to the Freedom Park. He said, “The resolve to take the 10th-anniversary celebration to the Freedom Park, which remains the topmost hub for artistic productions and creative expressions in the country, is partly in recognition of Wole Soyinka’s status as the patron saint of the Park, and of creativity in Nigeria and Africa.”

Dear Governor Kayode Fayemi…

Tribune Online
Dear Governor Kayode Fayemi…

JAMB Husband, adeleke NASS efcc Oyetola

LAST week, I published Governor Kayode Fayemi’s rejoinder to my piece “Eventually, Fayemi wins the argument” of 9 June. The rejoinder was signed off by one of his media aides, Segun Dipe. Having fulfilled my promise to publish Governor Fayemi, I hereby also fulfil the promise to publish a response to their rejoinder.

Segun Dipe headed Punch’s Business Desk for a spell. The likes of Orezina Agbodo (of blessed memory), Demola Akinbola, Weneso Orogun, John Uwe, Kunle Somorin, Oladele Adekunle, Akintunde Imolehin (Property PUNCH) and so on were those who took Financial PUNCH to dizzying heights in those days. True professionals hallow their News Editors and Editors; only reporters without manners drag theirs on the floor for filthy lucre. I do not have glass chin. I take as much hard punches as I give; hence, I had no problem publishing them last week in this same column they said does not command respect or attention but which they, all the same, could spend precious time and resources responding to! Apt is the Yoruba saying that esin ota eni o ki n ga l’oju eni. Incidentally, I do not see them as enemies, but I firmly believe they blatantly rigged the July 14, 2018 Ekiti governorship election. To date, I see Fayemi as a brother and friend; except he sees me otherwise.

FG, govs to recruit N-Power cadets, corps members for community policing

Fayemi’s Chief Press Secretary, Yinka Oyebode, was exceptionally professional for the period I interacted with Fayemi in their first term. I was not surprised he dodged putting his name to their scurrilous rejoinder, whereas, it is a fool who dances on a turf where even angels fear to tread. But Oyebode could have approached me directly. I have a lot of respect for him. Fayemi, I chose to keep a distance from, until the election case was settled. That was the least respect I believe I owed Professor Kolapo Olusola Eleka, a gentleman to the core who, I must confess, I now treat as a precious friend. After the Supreme Court judgment, Eleka congratulated Fayemi and put the election behind him – and that was not without my input. Two days before that judgment, Ayodele Fayose congratulated Fayemi for his appointment as chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, describing the appointment as well-deserved. I cannot cry more than the bereaved! If, as a media consultant, they say it is wrong for me to “consult” for Fayose who asked for my advice, why was it not wrong when I acted similarly for Fayemi? The “Man of the Year” award which Fayemi collected during his first tenure from Champion newspapers, I facilitated it. It was okay. I visited Ekiti several times on Fayemi’s invitation; it was okay. I was invited to follow his electioneering campaign and offer advice. It was okay. I prayed for Fayemi. I offered him pieces of advice as governor and as minister. It was okay. But doing similarly for Fayose is a crime in their warped reckoning! It is like once you have played for Barca, you dare not cross over to Real Madrid or from Real to Atletico! I am not, and was never, on Fayose’s payroll. Fayose sought after me. I initially rebuffed him. As it pleased Fayose, he appreciated my services, just like Fayemi did.

Fayemi has his good points; Fayose, too. Both have their drawbacks. I cannot endorse or accept any of them warts and all. The role played by Fayemi and others of the exile in the struggle for the enthronement of democracy, especially as it pertains to Radio Kudirat, cannot be forgotten in a hurry. I dare to say, however, that while Fayose is an open book, Fayemi is crossword puzzle. Fayose became the lone voice in the wilderness, standing up against the excesses and atrocities of the Muhammadu Buhari-led administration. Whatever you say about Fayose, you will never take that away from him. Fayose defended his Ekiti people against mindless and murderous Fulani herders; his anti-open grazing law and ferocious speeches curbed them. Since he left office, Ekiti has become the killing fields of Fulani herdsmen. Fayemi, at best, has been ambivalent on a burning issue that demands firm and prompt action. “The hottest places in Hell,” says Dante, “are reserved for those who, in times of moral crisis, maintain their neutrality.” We are in such a time in Nigeria today!  I told Fayemi hard truths. I told him he would lose in 2014 and why – and it happened. That was before “federal might.” What did Fayemi’s ministerial appointment fetch Ekiti or the South-West? How can I then root for him to become president? It appears to me Fayose will better defend South-West interests than Fayemi. But I also told Fayose hard truths: On his controversy with Olukere over the cutting of a tree at Ikere; his demolition exercises; the shock sacking of his Chief Press Secretary, Idowu Adelusi; his tough speech at the Ewi’s palace, to mention but a few. He would rage at first but, eventually, would have a re-think and do the needful.

Interestingly, I met Fayose fortuitously. He called me to complain that even after the 2014 election; I was still in his throat promoting Fayemi. Honestly, I had thought Fayemi a saint and Fayose the devil incarnate. But after having the opportunity of seeing Fayose at close quarters, I saw that he, too, had a good side. Put this side-by-side the very sad episode of the unravelling of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its leaders, which gets worse each passing day! Today, millions of Nigerians who once rooted for APC and its leaders, this writer inclusive, are disappointed; their impunity, vaulting arrogance, sheer hypocrisy and crass incompetence rankle.

As close as I was to Fayose, I took no contract or land. He made me his “eyes and ears” over the payment of compensation at Ikere dualisation project. He told me of Ikere’s electoral importance to him. I performed the task and saved the state tens of millions of naira that could have been pocketed by unscrupulous workers. I did not receive a dime as bribe from anyone and took no payment from Fayose either. Ditto the Ilawe dual carriageway project whose compensation payment Fayose also drafted me to supervise.

He told me: “Falana is my enemy and he is from Ilawe.” He probably did not know that the same Falana (Comrade FF, as I fondly call him) was, and still is, my Comrade, friend, brother and benefactor!

On how I left PUNCH, they tried to be clever by half, pretending they disapproved, but their innuendoes, sarcasm, and scantily-concealed jabs gave them away! Thank you, any way, for your crocodile tears! But I will not be dragged, at this most inauspicious of times, to open old wounds or pile the misery; reasons being that all true and genuine PUNCHERS are mourning in solidarity with our Chairman Emeritus, Chief Ajibola Ogunsola, who just lost his 48-year-old daughter. Whatever any one may say, the story of PUNCH’s meteoric rise to stardom will be incomplete without a copious mention of Chief Ogunsola’s preponderantly good contributions. May the good Lord comfort him and his family in these trying times!

Suffice it to say, however, that men and women of conscience too numerous to mention were actually aghast at the way I exited PUNCH. PUNCH director, Mr. Lolu Foresythe (now of blessed memory), was lost for word. Tears welled in the eyes of Mrs. Angela Emuwa, then a director but now PUNCH chairman. Gani Fawehinmi was livid. His hand shook as he read the letter and his voice quaked. Let me not say more! It is, therefore, wicked, malicious and unacceptable that my illustrious career at the PUNCH would be whimsically distorted simply to mock me.

Kabir Dangogo, my God-sent who was then Principal Manager/Head, Corporate Affairs, Union Bank PLC, who called and gave me the contract to edit and print the bank’s newsletters, and Wada Maida, then MD of NAN, told me: “Bola, we don’t treat ourselves the way you Yoruba treat yourselves.”

The professionally sound, astute and erudite editor of this title [Sunday Tribune], Sina Oladeinde, informed me last Wednesday, as I finished the first draft of this piece, that Segun Dipe had called him to express remorse. I wasted no time in appreciating Sina and whole-heartedly accepting Dipe’s apologies. Later on Friday, Dipe himself called and we spoke at length. Like in times past, I extended my hands of fellowship to Governor Fayemi. I have, therefore, seriously watered down this response. But that the ears that heard alo (the going) may also hear the abo (the return) is why I still had to pen this response to their rejoinder.

COZA, Senator Abbo: Osun State is next!

Of truth is the Yoruba adage that says 20-year-old pounded yam can still steam really hot as if freshly prepared. Ask ‘Pastor’ Biodun Fatoyinbo of Commonwealth of Zion Assembly. The “pounded yam” he allegedly “ate” 20 years ago is steamy hot in his mouth right now! Rapists, paedophiles, child- and women-abusers should not be given an inch but must be smoked out of their “close places” as the Bible calls it.

So also must those who abuse their positions and privileges like the errant PDP Senator Elisha Abbo. I watched his apology; it was the right thing to do. Still, he must be brought to book; his remorse and penitence may count but for no reason must he escape punishment for his dastardly act. He should also be made to pay compensation to his victims.

I hereby appeal to social media, civil society groups, organisations and individuals who combined to bring COZA and Abbo on their kneels to move to Osogbo, Osun State, and focus attention on the case of the alleged defilement a four-year-old girl by the driver (Oyelakin Oluwatomisin) of a politically-connected private school (Charleston Group of Schools, Kelebe, Osogbo) whose powerful owners are said to be Mr and Mrs Adeyemi.

Osun State government appears to be dragging its foot on the matter. I personally took the matter up with the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Dr. Charles Akinola; I have also repeatedly written about it as well as called the attention of civil society organisations. The powerful people involved in this case are even said to include a first-class traditional ruler in the state and they have all been piling undue pressure on the family of the victim. On one occasion, Akinola made me speak to “someone” I suspected could be Governor Gboyega Oyetola himself, who denied that the state was on the side of the vile rapist and paedophile. He promised to get justice for the victim. But the case has suffered diligent prosecution. The magistrate almost threw it out. The accused was released from Ilesha prison and now not only walks about a free man, but also, with his gang terrorising, intimidating and mocking the family of the victim.

The case comes up again tomorrow (Monday, 8 July). At the last hearing, which was two months ago, they said the case file would have left the DPP’s office for onward transmission to the High Court. I have enough “locus standi” in this case, as the lawyers would say; apart from being public-spirited, the victim’s mother is my niece and the entire family is gutted.

While I congratulate Governor Gboyega Oyetola on his mint-fresh victory at the Supreme Court, he should please see to it that justice is done in this matter.

LAST WORD: Congratulations, Oluwadare Aragbaye, on your well-deserved appointment as Head of Service of Ondo State. Not only was Dare my junior at Owo High School, he is also unassuming, humble, courteous, respectful, and dutiful. His elder brother, “Brother” Bola Aragbaye (who translated lately), was instrumental to my starting my journalism career at the Sketch newspapers, Ibadan. Dare, may your tenure be fruitful! Aketi s’okan yi!

Dear Governor Kayode Fayemi…

Police warn as cultists plan to celebrate ‘7/7 anniversary’ today

Police warn as cultists plan to celebrate ‘7/7 anniversary’ today

Police

AS cult groups from some parts of the country plan to hold a festival of cultism today, police authorities in Lagos, Oyo and Kwara states have warned them against holding such celebrations in the states.

The cult groups have used past celebrations of July 7 code-named 7/7 to either initiate new members or visit violent vengeance on perceived opponents.

Investigation revealed that previous festivals in notable areas of Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, were trailed by violence and criminal activities among members of cult groups.

Some of the notable areas in the state capital, where the cult activities were witnessed in the recent past included Ibrahim Taiwo road, Kulende, Sabo Oke, Agaka, Eruda, Agbo Oba, Stadium Road, Irewolede I and II and Oyun areas, among other communities.

The violent cult activities, which are usually led by students of both secondary and higher institutions in the state, also involved artisans like vulcanizers, bricklayers, commercial motorcycle riders, tricycle operators, among others.

Oshiomhole backs Governor Bello on indirect primaries

But the Kwara State Police Command said that it had put in place adequate security measures throughout the state to check the development which it described as unacceptable.

The state Police Commissioner, Kayode Egbetokun, in a statement at the weekend, advised students to shun any suspicious gathering of young men and women in their environments and report any suspicious movements to the police.

Similarly, the police in Oyo State, on Saturday, warned secret cult groups popularly known as Aiye and Eiye confraternities against unlawful gathering.

The police in the state gave the warning in a statement by its Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Olugbenga Fadayi, in Ibadan.

Fadayi quoted the state’s Commissioner of Police, Shina Olukolu, as saying that the command had been notified that  “Aiye and Eiye ’’ held their annual celebrations on July 7 and August 8 respectively  across the states in the South-West zone.

He said that the police in Oyo State were on top of the situation and were working to clamp down on the aforementioned secret cult groups.

The police spokesperson quoted the commissioner as warning the cultists not to attempt to test the “will and capacity” of the police and other security agencies in the state to respond to and deal with any threat to peace and order.

“The command enjoins the people of the state to go about their lawful businesses as the police will not give any breathing space to these unscrupulous elements to create chaos in the state,’’ Fadayi said.

Also, the  police  in Lagos State, on Saturday, warned  suspected  cultists across the state with a  “show of force exercise”  in different  parts of the state to prevent  any breakdown of law and order.

Armed policemen were on patrol in many parts of the state to show suspected cult members of their readiness in case of any attempt to foment trouble today.

Sunday Tribune also gathered that the state Commissioner of Police, Zubairu Muazu, has warned parents to call their children to order as the police would not spare anyone planning to cause trouble in the state.

The state police boss also directed all area commanders and divisional police officers to ensure regular patrol from Saturday till the end of Sunday.

A senior police officer, who spoke with the Sunday Tribune on condition of anonymity, said “we had a show of force exercise  in different parts of the state today [Saturday] to warn suspected cultists.”

The police chief also added that “the area commanders have been directed to ensure that they ensure  regular patrol across their divisions and area command from today (Saturday) till the end of Sunday.

Parts of Lagos notorious for cult killings during such celebration in the last few years include Ikorodu,  Ajah, Somolu, Bariga  and  Ayobo.

Rafa Benitez Wants To Be Reunited With Striker Salomon Rondon

Rafa Benitez wants former striker Salomon Rondon to follow him to China, According to Dailymail.co.uk.

Rondon scored 12 times for Benitez at Newcastle United last season during a successful loan spell from West Brom – and now the Spaniard is seeking to take him to new club Dalian Yifang.

Championship side Albion can’t afford to keep 29-year-old Rondon and are willing to strike a deal with Dalian whose financial power gives them an advantage over West Ham and Newcastle in signing the Venezuelan.

The much-travelled Rondon played in Spain and Russia before coming to the Premier League in 2015 with West Brom.

Benitez will earn an estimated £12million a year in China after his contract ran out at St James’ Park and views Rondon as the perfect centre-forward to build his team around.

Rondon’s Venezuela crashed out of the Copa America last week at the quarter-final stage, falling to a 2-0 defeat by Argentina at the Maracana Stadium.

Burnley Signing This Instinctive 20-Yr-Old Attacker Would Be A Fantastic Way To Revive Dyche’s Attack

According to a report from The Northern Echo, Burnley are one of the clubs interested in Middlesbrough starlet, Marcus Tavernier, According to Soccersouls.com.

Marcus Tavernier is one of Championship football’s exciting young talents. He played 27 games last season, scoring four goals and providing three assists. Former Middlesbrough manager Tony Pulis was reluctant to use him too often but he showed flashes of his potential on the pitch.

The 20-year-old’s performances have caught the attention of some top-flight clubs, including Burnley. The report claim Middlesbrough are keen to keep hold of the youngster, who they see as a crucial player to their promotion chances next term.

However, Burnley must go all out to sign Tavernier, who clearly is an exciting talent for the future.

The Clarets are yet to make their first signing of the transfer window, which is surprising considering the club avoided relegation from the Premier League this past season. Burnley once again struggled for goals and that is something Sean Dyche needs to address over the summer.

Ashley Barnes and Chris Wood were the club’s chief source for goals in 2018/19. However, they lacked support from midfielders and wingers which saw the Lancashire-based outfit huff and puff for goals. None of the likes of Aaron Lennon, Johann Berg Gudmundsson or Matej Vydra made telling contributions which saw the onus fall on the young shoulders of Dwight McNeil.

Dwight McNeil was one of the bright attacking sparks in an otherwise lackluster attack and after a solid breakthrough campaign at Turf Moor, he’ll be expected to play an even bigger part next term.

But one cannot expect the 19-year-old for consistency and thus, Dyche should look to take the extra pressure off him by signing another young, exciting and dynamic winger in Marcus Tavernier.

Tavernier can play in different attacking positions and also be deployed as a left-back when required. A direct, agile and pacey attacker, the 20-year-old would bring in a lot of zest, speed and energy to Burnley’s attacking ranks that they lacked out wide last season.

He has the ability to create something out of nothing and can carve open the opposition defence by making a decisive pass in the final third of the pitch.

The 20-year-old is a hardworking, young English player Dyche should go for. His work rate is fantastic, is an instinctive player with an eye for goal. Tavernier can make an immediate impact at Turf Moor and give the attacking spark Dyche’s team missed last term.

Verdict
It’ll cost hefty money to sign the promising Tavernier from Middlesbrough, but it would certainly be worth it for Burnley if they can pull it off.

Spicy Asun for your weekend delight

Tribune Online
Spicy Asun for your weekend delight

Grilled goat meat popularly called Asun, a Yoruba delicacy is the toast of many Nigerians today. There is hardly a social event you will attend in many parts of the country that this delicacy is not part of the menu.

It is also one of the delicacies served at drinking joints, clubs and other recreation centers, where people use assorted drinks or palm wine to gulp down the spicy goat meat.

Mr Ayotunde Akinfolayemi of Standard Asun, Ibadan, Oyo State, in an interview with Food and Drinks says you don’t have to wait until you have a party before you can make Asun. Rather, it is a delicacy that people should prepare at home and enjoy with their families at weekends or during public holidays.  AY, as he is fondly called takes Xquisite through the process of preparing Asun.

Ingredients for Asun

  • Goat meat (cut with the skin)
  • Scotch bonnet pepper (ata rodo)
  • Onions
  • Seasoning
  • Thyme
  • Salt

From my findings, the Teaching Hospitals in Lagos and Benin as well as the National Hospital in Abuja have facilities for fertility cases such as yours. Where Sperm Banks are not available, the hospitals can arrange for anonymous Sperm donors and assist you and your wife with your fertility issue. In addition, there are a number of Private Hospitals in Ilorin, Ibadan and other nearby cities with fertility clinics. While these private facilities may be more expensive than the public ones, they may offer more privacy than the public ones.

2019 Osun Osogbo festival promises new surprises —Arulogun

2019 Osun Osogbo festival promises new surprises —Arulogun

Osun Osogbo

The 2019 edition of the annual Osun Osogbo festival is around the corner and in this interview with Saturday Tribune, Mr Toye Arulogun, the Managing Consultant of the marketing communications firm managing the festival, explained that this year’s edition of the festival, tagged, ‘Festival of the World’ will add value to the cultural tourism landscape of Nigeria.

What significance does Osun Osogbo festival hold for the state and its people?

Osun Osogbo is not a festival of the people of Osogbo nor the people of Osun State alone. Osun Osogbo festival is an international festival. As Kabiyesi, the Ataoja of Osogboland would say, it is a festival of the world. Remember that the Osun Grove has been listed by UNESCO’s site since the year 2005 as a world heritage site. So, we are  talking about a local festival with a global appeal. More directly to your question however, Osun Osogbo festival is an annual ritual in fulfillment of the promise to Yeye Osun — the goddess of river Osun.

Over the years, it has grown in stature and reputation. It attracts not just Osun devotees but local, national and international tourists. It is, therefore, not just a celebration by Osun devotees or the people of the state, but a global cultural fiesta that attracts patrons and participants locally, nationally and internationally. The significance therefore is the preservation of the Osun Osogbo traditional heritage, promotion of cultural tourism with inherent socio – economic benefits to the state and its people. Osun Osogbo festival is an international traditional, heritage and cultural festival that has given a prominent position to Osogbo and indeed Osun State.

Apologise to Nigerians for saying Abacha didn’t steal, Falana tells Buhari

What are you going to do to add value to the programme?

Our strategy is to deliver a win – win experience for all the various stakeholders and partners. The integrity of the traditional institution will be sustained, the state government will derive both intrinsic and extrinsic benefits, the sponsoring brands will get value and returns on investment, the devotees and participants will have a worthy and rewarding experience, the people and businesses in Osun State will gain through job opportunities and increase in sales activities along the value chain.

Do you think you can make a difference?

For us as marketing communications practitioners, managing the festival, we are working on an international brand. Our task is more of reinforcing the brand in terms of offering and contemporariness without losing the traditional and cultural essence which is at its core. I am the team leader and just ended my tenure as the Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism in Oyo State and therefore, comes to the table with some measure of experience in the promotion and preservation of our cultural heritage. Having sustained existing festivals and introduced new ones like the Aso Ofi Festival, Amala Fiesta, International Twins festival, World Culture day celebrations while in office, it is our conviction that the Esquire Global team can add value to the Osun Osogbo festival and the cultural tourism landscape in Nigeria.

How do you intend to put your mark without eroding the cultural importance of the show?

It is not about anybody putting a mark, neither is it a show. Osun Osogbo has been existing for decades, it is still existing and will continue to exist. It is a cultural fiesta with strong heritage and high spiritual content. Nobody will dare tamper with that. The traditional and heritage institutions will not permit that. The mystery and mystic is at the nucleus of the festival. Kaabiyesi, The Ataoja of Osogboland is the custodian. The mission is to develop and expand the frontiers of the Osun Osogbo festival brand positioning it as one of the top festivals in Africa and ultimately the world without detracting from its spiritual essence, myth and mysticism.

What should people expect from the 2019 edition of the festival?

The 2019 edition of the Osun Osogbo Festial promises to evoke the same spirituality and celebrations of the past. However, we have injected a few new things to provide value addition especially for sponsors and partners. We expect more foot fall from within and outside the country, more exposure across the various communications channels and vehicles, more fun and excitement in the true spirit of festivity. There will be specifically targeted events across demographies and a general lock down of Osogbo during the 2 weeks celebration. Naturally, this will translate into higher economic gains for Osogbo and the state given the multiplier effect of hosting an international festival in key sectors such as hospitality, transportation, culture and tourism, textile and fashion, food and beverages, arts and entertainment to mention a few.

How do you intend to manage the crowd?

I am glad you recognise the fact that there is typically a huge crowd at most of the events marking the festivities during the Osun Osogbo festival. Remember, it is not the first time and there is a crowd management plan on ground, which is why over the years, there has never been causalities. Your question is, however, appropriate given our promise of more foot fall this year. We have therefore not only upscaled the crowd management plan but security cover as well. Rest assured that as event managers we are focusing on this crucial performance indicator. It is non-negotiable for the success of the festival.

What plans do you have for the local crafts people?

Osogbo is renowned for arts and crafts. The arts and crafts practitioners are an integral part of the festival. People come from all over the world to purchase Osogbo’s art and craft, especially foreigners and Africans in the diaspora. It is a huge market during the festival. So, we will sustain the arts and crafts exhibition with the typical merchandising and sale of not just Osogbo art and craft but Yoruba art and craft.

Is fungal or animal protein better for building muscle?

Tribune Online
Is fungal or animal protein better for building muscle?

muscle

As more and more people are turning away from meat in favor of plant-based and meat replacement products, scientists are asking more questions about how protein sources differ from one another. New research looks at whether animal or fungus-derived protein is better for building muscle mass.

New research claims that consuming fungal protein may be the best way to build muscle faster.

Traditionally, some people have considered that animal products are the best source of protein for health. Recently, however, various studies have questioned this point of view.

For instance, one 2017 study from the University of Exeter in the United Kingdom suggested that fungus-derived protein (mycoprotein) may be just as good for physical health as animal protein, such as milk protein.

Mycoprotein is a processed, nutrient-derived form of a strain of the microfungus Fusarium venenatum, which naturally contains a high amount of protein.

APC is not losing out in Osun — Jayeola

For that study, the research team — led by Benjamin Wall, Ph.D. — collaborated with and received funding from Quorn Foods, a company that produces plant-based meat replacement products, and which uses mycoprotein as the protein source in their foods.

Recently, continuing their collaboration with Quorn Foods — which distribute their product in some European countries, including the U.K., and in the United States — Wall and colleagues have gone on to find out exactly how mycoprotein compares to animal protein (specifically, milk protein) in terms of contributing to muscle mass growth.

The food company declared for Medical News Today that “Quorn Foods provide funding for Exeter University’s research into mycoprotein and support their commitment to publish the results regardless of the findings.”

The researchers have presented their latest findings at the European College of Sport Science’s 2019 Congress, which this year takes place in Prague, the Czech Republic, between 3–6 July.

Over 120% boost in muscle building rates

As part of the current research, the investigators assessed the digestion of protein in 20 young, healthy male participants. In protein digestion, amino acids — which make up proteins — pass into the bloodstream, thus becoming available for the building of muscle mass.

The researchers evaluated muscle building rate while the volunteers were at rest after having participated in a session of strenuous resistance exercise, and after having consumed either milk protein or mycoprotein.

Wall and team found that the participants who had received milk protein were able to boost their muscle building rates by up to 60%. However, those who consumed mycoprotein instead increased their muscle building rates by over 120%.

The investigators note that their findings bode well for non-meat eaters, as they show that fungus-derived protein could effectively replace animal protein for muscle building or maintenance.

“These results are very encouraging when we consider the desire of some individuals to choose non-animal derived sources of protein to support muscle mass maintenance or adaptations with training,” says Wall, who is associate professor of Nutritional Physiology at Exeter.

“Our data show that mycoprotein can stimulate muscles to grow faster in the hours following exercise compared with a typical animal comparator protein (milk protein) — we look forward to seeing whether these mechanistic findings translate to longer-term training studies in various populations.”

Pains after stooling

Pains after stooling

Pains

I used to feel pains all over my body after stooling. The pain only disappears after I must have used antibiotics. Please help me.

Salman (by SMS)

Apologise to Nigerians for saying Abacha didn’t steal, Falana tells Buhari

There are many reasons for your kind of complaints. For example, sometimes constipation alone can produce this sort of pain with defecation, due to insufficient emptying of the colon or excessive straining to pass hard stool. It is one of the most common causes of abdominal cramps after stooling. As the rectum is not completely emptied, the feeling of incomplete evacuation can further contribute to pain development and abdominal discomfort. Body pains after defecation can also be a sign of a serious condition called inflammatory bowel disease (with two different types, Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis). Irritation around the anus can also lead to pain with defecation. Typically, this irritation could be from haemorrhoids or from an anal fissure, and would tend to cause pain that was more localised to the rectal area than general abdominal pain. Your doctor will be able to perform a general examination and help determine the cause of the problem as well as the correct treatment for it. In cases of constipation, the disorder can be adequately managed by consuming large quantities of fiber such as fruits and vegetables as well as increasing your intake of fluids.

Bullets, blood and tears in unending ‘war’ between Ilaje and Ajah in Lagos

Bullets, blood and tears in unending ‘war’ between Ilaje and Ajah in Lagos

Inexplicably, the lingering bloody crisis has been largely kept out of public view. But deaths are being constantly recorded, with a growing IDP colony to boot. OLALEKAN OLABULO went deep into the heart of the bloodshed.

ISALE Ijebu and Ilaje are two communities between posh Victoria Garden City and Ajah, but the current crisis situation in the two Lagos communities is similar to the widespread insecurity in the north-eastern part of the country.  For reasons yet to be established, the devastating impact of the ongoing war between the Ilaje and Isale Ijebu communities is not attracting the urgent attention it should get, considering the magnitude of the bloody clashes in a state that is not experiencing a war.

Residents are daily fleeing the communities, while those who have decided to stay behind have become internally displaced persons and refugees.

Three policemen have been shot by the warring neighbours, while no fewer than seven people have been killed since the clash escalated again about two months ago. The situation is more worrisome with the fact that the police are working on a report that one of the communities brought in militants from the South-South geopolitical zone of the country. No one has yet been indicted.

87-year-old Ben Nwabueze leads Atiku’s legal team at tribunal

VGC as a facade

VGC, as Victoria Garden City is fondly called, and Ajah are two communities with modern architectural edifices and infrastructures but the two communities between them, Isale Ijebu and Ilaje, are nothing but a neglected slum. Apart from the fact that these two communities lack basic amenities, they share just a primary school and a secondary school.

The situation in Ilaje and Isale Ijebu areas of Ajah is one communal crisis that has resulted in students not going to school, traders not going to the markets and churches and mosques not opening for worship. Residents who have social engagements have been forced to postpone or cancel them.

Saturday Tribune investigations revealed that the crisis might not be unconnected with a vast expanse of land which at present is being occupied by the Ilajes on a riverine area with a mechanised dredging site. There have been accusations and counter-accusations from both communities on who is bullying who and who caused the crisis.

A senior police officer in the area who spoke with Saturday Tribune under the condition of anonymity said that although both communities have been at war since 2011, relative peace was restored  in the area until two months ago when hostility was renewed.

“It is a serious war between the two communities and they will not mention a single name. This community will be blaming the other, while people are being killed and houses are being destroyed,” the police chief said. He, however, blamed the crisis on the allegations by the Ilajes that the Ajah people were planning to take over their community and turn it into a modern estate.

Our story –Ilajes

Reverend Oduwole Oluwasegun, the public relations officer of the Ilaje indigenes in Ajah, spoke with Saturday Tribune on the raging war: “We have been here since 1886. This was proved by the tribunal that was set up on the last Ajah crisis. Our forefathers bought this land from them. Many of our people relocated to this area after the demolition of Moba in 1984 and Maroko in 1990. The waterside area was bought from the Aberoje family by the Olori Ebi, who resold it to the Ilajes.”

He said trouble started in 2011 “when they wanted to change the name of this area to Aberoje Street from the initial Ilaje Street. This action led to serious crisis and about 57 houses belonging to Ilaje people were burnt, while seven people were killed at that time. On 27th May, 2019, the Ajah boys invaded Ilaje where they looted properties, burnt houses and killed Mr Kehinde whose corpse is still lying in the mortuary. There was a day that four armed men from Ajah came into the community from a corner by the second transformer at the waterside. They shot repeatedly into different directions. They attacked a trader and collected N150,000 from her.

“The soldiers that came to our rescue on the 22nd of June, 2019 arrested two Ajah boys with guns and other dangerous weapons and those boys are being sponsored by the people who want to take over our land and build an estate on it. We have it on good authority that they want to send us away and build an estate on this land.”

On the latest crisis, the Ilaje spokesperson said, “The dredger company started working on the Ilaje water in 2015. The Ilajes did not benefit from them until the ones that came in October 2018 and out of the nine sites in Ilaje waterside, Ajah is controlling six, while three were given to the Ilajes. Even at that, their Baale still claims royalties on the three sites that are given to the Ilajes. The Ajah community has painted the Ilajes black before all Eti Osa indigenes and Lagosians as a whole. Is Ilaje not a dialect under Yoruba again?

“We had a peace meeting with the Area Commander, DPO and council chairman of Eti Osa Local Government and other stakeholders and at the end of the meeting, the two communities signed a peace accord on the 20th of June, 2019. A day after the signing of the peace accord, the Ajah people invaded Ilaje again and shot four people, including a policeman.”

‘We are in war situation here’

A member of the executive of the Ilaje union, who identified himself simply as Mr Irejuwa, described the situation in the area as war-like. He said on a daily basis, people were moving out of the area for fear of becoming the next victim. Many residents turn my house to an IDP camp whenever the Ajah boys invade our community.

“It is more worrisome that our children can no longer go to school. The only primary and secondary schools in the two communities are situated in a single compound in Olomu. Our children have not been going to school since the latest crisis started. They were harassed and intimidated by hoodlums around the school. Our women were sent away from the markets. That is the only market in this area.”

A resident of Ilaje, Ayo Ebiesuwa, said the situation had gone beyond what the government could ignore. The fish trader claimed that she and other traders from Ilaje were sent away from the Ajah market by fellow women from the Ajah end, saying, “They sent us away with canes. They told us not to come to their market again.”

Adesoji Omotoyole, a 19-year-old SS 1 student also said, “I have been attacked three times on my way to school. It was either the hoodlums or some of my mates in school that harassed us. They accused my brother of being one of the people who are fighting for the Ilaje people.”

Ade Kolawole, a tailor, while sharing his experience of the continuous communal crisis said, “It has been very difficult for most of the youth in Ilaje now. They cannot go out without being attacked. We now go out through Berger instead of the nearby Ilaje Bus stop. Our youth don’t work again. I am a tailor and most of my customers are in Ajah. I cannot go to them now.”

Ilajes crying wolf –Ajah

Reacting to all the allegations against the Ajah people, the secretary general of the community, Kazeem Odunlami, said the Ilajes are only crying wolf where there is none. He added that it was the Ilajes that had been attacking, raping, robbing and killing the Ajah people who, according to him, are the rightful owners of all the land in the area.

Odunlami not only denied that students were being chased back home from schools, but also that the Ilajes have been allegedly invading Ajah with external forces through the waterways. He also claimed that many residents have been rendered homeless as a result of the attacks on their homes.

“We are the host community and they are not disputing that. We are not fighting with them over any land. They are the ones causing problem. The authority over the land in Ajah lies with our Baale. The clash usually starts with them. They are cultists and they belong to different groups. They always attribute clashes between their rival cult groups to us. We don’t have to fight them over any land. Initially, we could not fathom what their grouse with us was but we realised later that they are entertaining fears that we want to take over their land and build an estate. One of them said it during one of our meetings. They are the ones bringing people through the waterways to attack us,” the Ajah town secretary said.

The community scribe added: “When they wanted to start the dredging business, they brought dredgers to the palace here and the Baale gave them his blessings. They said that they wanted to start mechanised dredging in the area and we did not disagree with them. For three years, nothing was brought to our Baale despite the fact that he has the right to collect royalties there. There are factions among them. They are fighting over the dredging site. Our Baale had been arrested following fictitious petitions from them in the past and he was always vindicated. He has no interest in their land. The latest crisis started between two brothers of the same father from their end. The two brothers belong to different cults and a clash ensued between the two groups at a naming ceremony on their side.”

‘We are refugees in our land’

Alhaji Kabiru Yekeen, secretary of the Ojupon/Ogunsemo ruling house in Ajah, also denied the claims by the Ilajes. He said instead, the Ajah indigenes were daily becoming refugees in their own land following constant attacks from the Ilajes.

“They are acting on the rumour that we want to take over their land. They act on that to attack our people wherever and whenever they find them. Only a few weeks back, one of our youth, Oloyo, was killed and his corpse burnt. Those who attempted to recover his body were also shot. They hide under cultism to attack us,” Alhaji Yekeen said.

Alhaji Rasak Odunlami, the Baba Oja of Ajah, also denied that any trader from Ilaje was sent out of the market. The Babaloja said the Ilajes were only using the claim that they were being sent out of the market to get unnecessary sympathy from the public.

He claimed that there were many ethnic groups even in Ilaje and that there was no way the market women in Ajah would have identified and singled out Ilaje women for expulsion from the market.

Wives raped in husbands’ presence?

It was also tales of woe from residents of Isale Ijebu as their houses were also allegedly burnt and destroyed by rampaging Ilaje militants, while their women were also reportedly raped in the presence of their husbands.

A trader in Ajah, Mrs Bilikis Eshinlokun, called on the Lagos State government to urgently intervene in the plight of the people of the area. The trader said a man, whose wife and daughter were raped, had relocated from the area.

“I have also abandoned my house for these people. They come with dangerous weapons, shooting and attacking people. They robbed, raped and attacked many residents of Isale Ijebu. I cannot sleep in this place again. I come out in the morning and return to sleep in another place in the evening. The government should act fast,” Mrs Eshinlokun said.

A student of Olomu Secondary School who pleaded for anonymity, in a chat with Saturday Tribune, also denied that the students who stayed away from school were chased away by hoodlums even though almost all the students from Ilaje had not been coming to school.

“One or two of them are still coming to school. Many of them have stopped coming since the clash started but nobody stopped them from coming to school. Maybe they are afraid of being attacked,” she said.

The image maker of the state police command, Bala Elkana, told Saturday Tribune that the police in the state had taken necessary measures to prevent recurrence of such clashes and restore the confidence of the two communities in the police.

“The Commissioner of Police, Zubairu Muazu, personally visited the communities and met with the leaders of the two communities and assured them of the readiness of the police to put a total end to the crisis. The commissioner had immediately created a buffer point for policemen to permanently stay in the communities till the crisis is completely over. Mobile and anti-riot policemen and Armoured Personnel Carrier have been deployed in the two communities,” Elkana said.

The police spokesperson denied the allegation that policemen were taking sides with one of the communities.

“It is not fair for anybody to say that the police are taking sides with any of the communities. It is the duty of the police to protect all citizens,” he explained

A senior police source in Ajah Area Command, while speaking with Saturday Tribune, said: “The Area Commander reacted to reports that some people were bringing militants from the Niger Delta to attack the other community. One of our men was shot. One needs to be very careful. Look at the terrain in Ilaje, it is very difficult to go in there and arrest anybody. The whole place may be engulfed in violence and it may get out of hand.”

Amsterdam Weighs Closing Curtains Of Red-Light District

Amsterdam’s mayor has proposed drawing the curtains over the notorious glass-fronted booths where prostitutes ply their trade, as part of an overhaul of the city’s red-light district.

Femke Halsema, the Dutch capital’s first female mayor, has presented four options for improving conditions for sex workers, cutting crime and reducing the burden of mass tourism in the area.

The proposals follow a series of interviews in which she has decried “the humiliation of women by large groups of tourists” as “unacceptable” and pledged to make fundamental changes.

The red-lit canal-side windows and sex shops of the De Wallen district are one of the biggest draws for the 18 million tourists who flock to the city every year.

“The traditional, licensed form of sex work in parts of the city centre is under pressure due to the growing number of visitors to Amsterdam,” said Halsema.

“For many visitors, the sex workers have become no more than an attraction to look at. In some cases this is accompanied by disruptive behaviour and a disrespectful attitude to the sex workers in the windows.

“At the same time, there has also been a major increase in unlicensed, underground prostitution.”

Under the mayor’s first option, “the curtains of the window brothels close” so that “sex workers and their workplaces are no longer visible from the street”.

Other suggestions include moving some of the window booths out of De Wallen to other areas of the city, or closing down all of the booths in the area and setting up a new red-light district elsewhere.

However, the city could also increase the number of window brothels in the red-light district from the current level of 330, while “the establishment of a sex work hotel is also a possibility”.

Lyle Muns, spokesman for My Red Light, a brothel collective, stressed that sex workers needed to have a central role in the discussions.

“Shutting workplaces without a good alternative would be very bad for sex workers,” he told the Daily Telegraph.

“But I am pleased they are looking at new workplaces outside De Wallen — the so-called prostitution hotels.”

The mayor will meet sex workers, residents and local businesses this month and the proposals will be discussed by the city council and its lawyers in September.
