Ministry Staff Charged Over Alleged Falsification Of International Passport

Mohammed Babandede CGI Immigrations

Lagos – A protocol officer in the Ministry of Power, Works, and Housing,Maikudi Haruna has been prosecuted before an Abuja Federal High Court, for  involvement in the Forgery of documents meant for the procurement of Nigerian Passport.

Haruna, was said to have conspired by forging official Identity Card and signature of the Minister of the Ministry Power, Works and Housing on a letter issued to one Abubakar Mustapha Bida to procure “Official Passport”, thereby collecting N250,000:00(Two Hundred and Fifty Thousand Naira) as proceeds knowing fully well that the subject is not a government official.

The defendant was however arraigned before Justice Taiwo Taiwo on the offence bordering on conspiracy by making false statement for the purpose of procuring Nigerian passport and engaging in forgery.

The Comptroller General of Nigeria Immigration Service Muhammad Babandede, has vowed not to spare individual or groups involved in passport related offences.

The CGI however admonishes prospective applicants seeking Nigerian passport to avoid false declarations, forgery and use of fake breeder documents, but they should follow due process by paying online.

“I urge all applicants to apply online and desist from patronising touts, because both the procurer and the applicant will be prosecuted in accordance with the provision of the law related to Passport Offences,” he said.

Syrian President Replaces Security Chiefs

Pro-government Syrian pages on social media are reporting that President Bashar Assad has replaced some heads of influential security agencies, including Maj. Gen. Jamil Hassan, who has headed the powerful Air Force Intelligence Directorate since 2009.

Several pages, including Latakia Eagles and Homs Network Live, reported Sunday that Hassan was replaced by his deputy, Maj. Gen. Ghassan Ismail according to dailymail.co.uk.

There was no immediate confirmation from the government or state media, which rarely report news related to intelligence agencies.

The pages said the General Intelligence Directorate is now headed by Maj. Gen. Hussam Louqa, while Maj. Gen. Nasser al-Ali is now in charge of the Political Security Directorate.

Bahjat Suleiman, a former intelligence chief and former ambassador to Jordan, also listed the names on his Facebook page and Twitter account.

Iran Raises Uranium Enrichment Beyond Nuclear Deal Limits

Iran increased its uranium enrichment Sunday beyond the limit allowed by its 2015 nuclear deal with world powers, inching its program closer toward weapons-grade levels while calling for a diplomatic solution to a crisis heightening tensions with the U.S.

Iran’s move, coupled with earlier abandoning the deal’s limit on its low-enriched uranium stockpile, intensifies pressure on Europe to find any effective way around U.S. sanctions that block Tehran’s oil sales abroad according to AFP.

But the future of the accord that President Donald Trump unilaterally pulled the U.S. from a year ago remains in question. While Iran’s recent measures could be easily reversed, Europe has struggled to respond, even after getting a 60-day warning that the increase was coming.

Meanwhile, experts fear a miscalculation in the crisis could explode into open conflict, as Trump already has nearly bombed Iran over Tehran shooting down a U.S. military surveillance drone.

International reaction to Iran’s decision came swiftly, with Britain warning Iran to “immediately stop and reverse all activities” violating the deal, Germany saying it is “extremely concerned,” and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, a longtime critic of the accord, urging world powers to impose so-called “snapback sanctions” on Tehran.

The European Union says parties to the deal are discussing a possible emergency meeting after Iran’s announcement, with EU spokeswoman Maja Kocijancic saying the bloc is “extremely concerned” about the move. There was no immediate response from the White House.

Governors, before you cede S/West land, remember what happened to Afonja —Gani Adams

government

Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, Chief Gani Adams, speaks on issues of national interest, especially the controversial establishment of Ruga settlements across the country, in this interview with BOLA BADMUS. Excerpts:

THIS issue of suspended Ruga settlement threatened the country and polarised the polity. What is your own view of the programme as initially planned by the Federal Government?

The plan to establish Ruga settlement was a result of trying to revisit the jidadist agenda that was started in 1804. We didn’t see the policy as a way to settle the crisis of herdsmen. We saw it as a dangerous trend that was coming to our abode in the South-West.

And we saw it as a way of imposing on us those who had been threatening our lives and properties. We called on the whole world that we didn’t want Ruga settlements policy at all.

If they were settling the herdsmen who deal in cows, what about the people who deal in piggery? What about the farmers who deal in livestock like chicken and farmers who deal in various other animals? Why is the Federal Government laying emphasis only on those who deal in cows?

Our kidnappers were typical Fulani men and were on drugs, they were herdsmen, they told us themselves —Bauchi victim

As a matter of fact, the issue of ranches is private. The Federal Government does not have business involving itself in it or even using our resources to build communities for them.

Before the issue of these criminal Fulani herdsmen who are maiming, killing, raping, kidnapping our people, destroying their farms, burning them and collecting money from them, we had had some Fulani living in Yorubaland and they were living in peace and harmony. Nobody documented the lands given to them; they were being given lands by our royal fathers or landowners in the community, based on relationships, not by allowing a state government to give them 31 hectares of land on the basis of issuing documents to them and processing certificates of occupancy (CofO).

Now, should they succeed in doing that, as contemplated by the Federal Government, they would now install an emir on that land. Our memory is still refreshed about what happened between 1818 and 1824 when some Fulani came to Ilorin as Islamic scholars. In the process of settling down, Afonja was killed in 1884. That was how we lost the leadership of Ilorin. The same thing happened elsewhere.

Though people were not killed in Lokoja, systematically, the Yoruba, the Oworo who founded Lokojo, now called Lokoja, are not on their original land; the land has been taken over and the prominent traditional ruler of Lokoja now is an emir. The Oworo are now living in the hills of Lokoja. We don’t want to repeat the past mistake and we have communicated to our royal fathers; we have communicated to our governors who are the chief security officers of every state in the South-West; that in Yorubaland, history is very important. You should not cause a repeat of the problem we had in some of our towns in Yorubaland. The problem should not reccur.

Yoruba people had never wanted Ruga. It is unwarranted, needless and a dangerous policy. It is a policy that can break this nation, just as it has overheated the polity.

Four main zones in Nigeria, Middle-Belt, South-West, South-East and the South-South kicked against it. We said we didn’t want Ruga as a policy for settlement.

People said in a situation like this, consultations ought to have been the first approach. Why would you think the Federal Government never consulted before this kind of decision was taken?

Even if there was dialogue, nobody would agree with them on this.

I said that because the Federal Government appeared to be saying there would have been advantages, among which was that the settlements would boost economy, apart from creating job opportunities. Didn’t you see it that way?

The advantages, as reflected in the statement of spokesperson to the president, Garba Shehu, were watery. It was just cajole. It was as if they were playing on the intelligence of an entire country. You don’t play on the intelligence of a whole country. Are you telling me people were not doing their cattle businesses in kara (in Lagos) and different locations in Yorubaland, in the South and even in Nigeria as a whole?

So, what you are telling me is that if you gave them land, they own the land and you put some packages there. Why couldn’t you hand over such money to the state government? The state government should provide facilities for kara in places where they exist already. The state government owns the land and you rent it to do the business. So, those people would be paying to the state government. You could go and rent your house anywhere. Why did you want to build a community and put structures there? Is it so that in the process, when you put up those Ruga settlements, they might even be more beautiful than the main town?

The money should have been channeled to different areas. So it is not about dialogue. There is no dialogue about this issue other than for security operatives to move against the criminals. It is criminal to say you want to dialogue with somebody who maims, kidnaps and collects ransoms. When he kidnaps somebody, you have to pay N10 million. You want to dialogue with somebody who went to somebody else’s farm worth billions of naira, grazed his cows on that farmland and made his cows eat all the crops and later burnt down the rest of the farm? That is arson; it is criminal.

Definitely, the Federal Government should go and dialogue with those armed robbers robbing banks too. The same for those hired killers that collect money to murder people in cold blood; the Federal Government should go and dialogue with them. This is not an issue of dialogue; it is about putting adequate measures in place to stop the menace; arresting those who are involved in it. The government should apply speedy trial and let justice be done. You don’t pamper criminals.

From the beginning, you would see the way the Federal Government had been making steps. They wanted to give The Miyetti Allah N100 billion; the people rose against it and they stopped it. Now, the issue of giving them communities, spending billions of naira on those locations, making them modern communities is the least. Why?

We have our farmers in Yorubaland. Even from the bogus budget of the Ministry of Agriculture, they were not giving loans as similar packages. They were discouraging our farmers and running their agricultural system in their area. Now, even concerning private initiative, many people want to be involved in agriculture; they want to spend their money, but are afraid that if they go to farm, they (kidnappers) would kidnap them. The way this thing is going, within a period of time, there would be shortage of food. There would be famine in Nigeria.

Are you talking about the implications now?

Yes, that would be part of the implications of kidnapping.

Do you mean both immediate and long-term implications?

Now, we have Boko Haram in the North-East. We have bandits in the North-West and we have Fulani herdsmen in the Middle-Belt and the entire South. How do you want to portray a nation? The economy is in state of comatose and you still want to encourage something that would discourage investors from coming into the country. This is not only about investors that are coming, but also about those who are already in the country with their investments. They would move out of the country, when there is no security.

Even those of us that spoke with some investors when we travelled out of the country, by the time they heard the name of Nigeria, they would say it was a no-go area. They would just trick you saying they didn’t want to come to Africa for now. But when you probe them further, they would say they didn’t want to come to Nigeria; they preferred to go to Ghana or other West African countries other than Nigeria.

You can see that hardly would people from another country come to study in Nigeria. It is Nigerians that go to study in other countries, even Benin Republic. About 70 to 80 per cent of students of universities in Benin Republic are Nigerians. Even their main secondary schools are populated by Nigerians. You don’t see Ghanaians coming to Nigeria to study anymore. It is only Nigerians that go to Ghana to study. It is only Nigerians that go to Kenya to study and ditto for other countries in Africa and outside it, including Britain, America, among others.

However, in the 70s and 80s, we had a lot of foreigners coming to Nigeria to study and what that meant was that we had education tourism. That would have been part of ways of making money for the country. Britain is making not less than €10 billion on education tourism annually. India is making up to $15 billion annually on education tourism. So also is Britain making money from health tourism.

All we talk about here is oil. And we start taxing companies that we don’t even supply with electricity.

So, I think a lot of things are wrong with this country. It is not at this stage that Nigeria should be talking about herdsmen destroying our farms.

So, I think the issue of Ruga, from the start, had been a no-go area in South-West and I believe the entire South did not want it. What we want is that the government should flush out the criminals. I am not saying they (people) should attack the Hausa/Fulani in their areas. We are not tagging all the Hausa/Fulani as our enemies. We are talking about the criminals who are in Nigeria and those who came from Niger and Chad, etc. who are criminals; who are machineries that pretend to be farmers only to come to our communities to kidnap people and engage in other criminal activities.

What were the actions taken by the South-West that ensured that this Ruga policy was prevented from being implemented?

I think the two conferences that happened in Yorubaland recently sensitised the entire Yoruba people that we have to be security conscious; we have to be proactive on the issue of security. We have to watch our neighborhood. And the traditional rulers should know the kind of strangers who come to their communities. The traditional rulers should make sure they call community meetings and inform all their chiefs and subjects to report any strange face they notice in their communities. They should come and report and bring those strange faces to the palace to register their arrival and stay in that community.

So, all the traditional rulers were told to have the data of Fulani in their communities and that some of them, should they want cows from them, should buy with their money and not on credit, so that they (Fulani) would not have a leverage over them or have any excuse to control them when they intend killing people in that community.

That does not mean they should not have relationship with non-Yoruba. As traditional ruler, you have to have good relationship with all non-Yoruba living in your community, because Yoruba are living in the North. You have to relate with them with respect.

We also agreed that every community should prepare their native intelligence gathering mechanism. All the traditional rulers should establish their intelligence gathering units. Even in a community of a hundred thousand people, they may hire people not up to hundred and put them on stipends, salary or some privileges. All they are expected to do is that they would be giving first-class information of what is happening to the palace. The palace will be coordinating it and giving it to the police and if the divisional police officer (DPO) is not acting enough or the director of State Security Service (SSS) is not acting appropriately, you report to the state command.

At the same time, we said the state government should prepare for rural security. We don’t prepare for rural security in Nigeria. All our preparations for security are for urban areas; we don’t prepare. That’s the major problem. That was the advantage the criminal Fulani herdsmen took over most of the communities. We have bushes, farmlands and villages, but there are no police posts around all these areas, not even patrol of bicycles.

So, we said the state government, as a matter of urgency, ought to prepare to have no fewer than between 2,000 and 3,000 forest guards, while each local government area should have a minimum of 100 forest guards each. The forest guards would be saddled with the responsibility of monitoring what is happening in the forests, because apart from Fulani herdsmen, some of our people are involved in evil rituals. Not all the kidnappings are done by the Fulani. There are some Yoruba who kidnap and use their victims for money rituals. There are some too among the Yoruba who kidnap for ransom. Some of these Fulani have some Yoruba as their agents who give them information.

And it is essential, based on the principle of federalism, which Nigeria is supposed to be operating, that we have state police. We also need local government police.

State police is very important and we are not even talking about it. We are saying let the federating units develop at their pace. There are certain responsibilities the Federal Government is just putting on which it doesn’t have the capacity to shoulder. The issue of electricity generation and distribution should not be for the Federal Government; so also is agriculture.

So, I think by the time you allow the federating units to run and power is devolved to the federating units, there would be synergy among the federal, zones, states and local governments; and they would compete amongst themselves development wise. Definitely, everyone would be running to put his house in order. Nigeria as a country is like a man that can’t take care of four wives, but has married 36, including one concubine. That is the problem we are having in Nigeria. We got our independence on the basis of federalism. We called the country Federal Republic of Nigeria. We now sat after independence, wrote a constitution and called the country a Republic in 1963.

The military then came and turned it to a unitary system and since then, Nigeria had never had rest. Since then, we have been running from one problem to the other. Since then, Nigeria has never survived stability for one year.

Our politicians now have the opportunity to write their names in the good book of history of the country. So, we must make sure we move this country forward.

If Buhari had insisted on having his way on Ruga, what would have happened?

It is not possible for the Federal Government to impose settlements on the people. It couldn’t insist. Land matter is a state affair; it is not a federal issue.

What if all the governors had agreed on the establishment?

The governor who does that would put himself in problem. It would not even be a four-year or eight-year problem; it would be an everlasting problem. And given the tension this issue generated, the Yoruba, especially, won’t forgive such a governor for life.

Look, they have to learn from history. How many people remember governors of any state in Yorubaland in 1999 anymore? It is not that all of them are bad, but how many people remember them again; even those who served up till 2007? There are few people that are relevant among these people. So, power is momentary. Don’t say you are governor of eight years and, therefore, you are Almighty God. Play your role; show to your subjects, your people, that their wish is your command. Show to them that you are their servant, that you are ready to do at least 80 per cent of what they want. Don’t tell them that they have given you the mandate and they could go to blazes, if they don’t like what you are doing. Such a person would destroy his own future and that of his children.

Do you know the Yoruba? We haven’t forgiven those who betrayed us in the 60s. We haven’t forgiven those who betrayed Chief Obafemi Awolowo in the 60s. We haven’t forgiven those who betrayed us in the cause of June 12.

So, you are talking about somebody who would bring another enemy; another Afonja scenario? Such a person would be treated as such. You know what happened during Aare Afonja’s reign. If such is repeated, it will be a path to destruction for that governor.

RUGA is suspended, not abandoned; it will come back very soon —Yakassai

RUGA is suspended, not abandoned; it will come back very soon —Yakassai

RUGA settlement

Former Special Adviser on National Assembly Matters to former President Shehu Shagari, Alhaji Tanko Yakassai, spoke with KOLA OYELERE on the RUGA settlement imbroglio and why he thinks it should be accepted.

WHAT can you say about this issue of RUGA settlement?

It will be recalled that in the olden days, the Fulani would come to a place and be given a portion of land to settle down with their cattle. Such a place used to be a piece of land not occupied by anybody.

RUGA settlements had been in existence in the Northern states for a long time. Nobody can remember how many years it had been in the North. In such places, the Fulani would build their houses and it is on this allocated land they would be rearing their livestock.

However, over time, such a parcels of land had been appropriated by various administrations, either to friends of government or to those in government.

No peace unless herdsmen move freely —Northern group

Has civilisation not technically phased out such a practice?

RUGA settlement was brought out to resolve the persistent conflicts between farmers and herders. Farmers claim herders destroy their farms while rearing their cows. Therefore, in an effort to find a lasting solution to this incessant crisis, the Federal Government came out with the introduction of RUGA settlement whereby a portion of land would be set aside with necessary amenities like roads, water and other things for the Fulani herders to settle down with their livestock, instead of roaming about and getting into conflicts with farmers.

In the final analysis, it would be in the interest of Nigerians for the Fulani herders to be settled in a place. First and foremost, it would curb incessant conflicts between them and farmers.

Second, settling down in a place allocated to them would indirectly prevent them from searching for food for their cows and make their cows healthier and posses more meat. Unlike when they were moving with their cattle from North to the Southern part of the country, their cattle would have more weight, quality and nourishing meat for people to eat.

Who is to provide land for this project? Can the Federal Government acquire land anywhere in the country for this programme?

The Federal Government has no control over land in any state, with respect to Land Use Decree, which is enshrined in the country constitution. The only place the Federal Government has control over land is the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.

However, the Federal Government would not force any government to provide land for RUGA settlement. It is voluntarily. And before its suspension, no fewer than 12 states had agreed to provide land. It was those states that did not agree to provide land for the project that were attacking it. But if you look at the geography of the country, the entire North has about 70 per cent of the total land mass, while the Southern part of the country has about 30 per cent.

But you must know that not many people in the South-West were against this project, but for the fact that there is more concentration of media in the region. Those few that were against this project were using the media to project their hatred against the establishment of RUGA.

But I would advise the Igbo to have a rethink over their rejection of RUGA settlement, because I rub your back, you rub my back when the need arises.

However, anything in Nigeria can be controversial. My problem is this: I have been going through the social medial, and to my surprise, most of these attacks on RUGA settlement came from the youth; people in the age bracket of 20 and 30. And my view, as is general all over the world, is that youths are the leaders of tomorrow. They should be ready at all times to support whatever is capable of moving this country forward. They are supposed to think ahead of people like me who are on the way out.

You were trying to say that the Igbo were supposed to back RUGA settlement. Why do you hold that opinion?

People were talking about power shift; that is to say the Igbo should produce president come 2023. But one thing that is certain is that this lofty idea cannot be achieved just on a silver platter. I am committed to the unity of this country and this is what I had been fighting for as far as back to 1953. It will be recalled that as a result of my commitment to the unity of this country that I was arrested and imprisoned; for fighting against the plan of making Nigeria a confederation, rather than a united country. That was when I was just about 20 years old.

This is what I expected the youth to be fighting for, not expressing sectional and parochial views.

When we say power should move to the Igbo, as we all know, for anybody to become president of this country, he has to garner votes from at least 24 states of the country. The North has 19 states, while South has 17. Therefore, for the Igbo to realise this dream, they need the support of every part of the country. So also, any Northerner equally needs the support of the South one way or the other.

Recall that the South-West has produced president. The North has also produced, while the people of the South-South had their turn by producing former President Goodluck Jonathan.

What I am trying to say here is that the Igbo, at this crucial stage in their quest of producing Mr. President in 2023 or at any time Allah destines them to occupy the seat, still need the collective support of people from the North and other parts of the South.

However going by their hostility towards an interest that belongs to the North, they may be erecting an impediment to this yearning and aspiration, because the North may give them back in their own coin. The North may ask them why they denied them support over their (North) interest in view of their opposition to the RUGA settlement project. Nobody can, therefore, blame the North for not supporting them then.

What I am trying to say is that for their people to kick against the establishment of RUGA, which is an interest of the North, there would be a time when the Igbo would equally need the support of the North for an assistance and they might also not render such an assistance to them, because they could tell them ‘you did not support us when we needed your backing for RUGA settlement.’

It is not only the people of the South-East that are kicking against RUGA settlements. Even some people from the North also vented their anger at it. What is your take on this?

It is true that some parts of the North, like Taraba State, were against it. I was told and even read it that the Taraba State governor said it. I am not saying all that is true. But if it is true, then, I think the Taraba State governor was not portraying himself as a father to all tribes in the state. I will like to advise the governor over his utterances. They are capable of compounding the persistent tension in the state. This is because Taraba State is a state having equal number of Moslems and Christians. Therefore, there must be equal treatment. And this idea of unnecessary segregation must not be allowed to rear its head again.

The Fulani tribe is an indigenous tribe that has been in existence for long and for anybody to deny or deprive them their right is very dangerous and has to be taken seriously.

As a governor in Taraba State, it behooves on him not to attach religion and tribal sentiments to the overall development of the state. Therefore, I will advise him to be extra careful when talking on the issue of RUGA settlement, because nobody was forcing any state to accept it. It was designed only for those states that agreed to implement it and were ready to provide land for it to take off.

Besides, the prayer of any lover of peace is that the persistent conflict between the Jukun and Tiv should be a forgone issue. It would not augur well for another crisis to engulf the state.

Now that the RUGA settlement project has been suspended, what, in your view, is next?

RUGA settlement is only suspended, but not abandoned. It will come at a later date very soon. In my view, it is only suspended, but not abandoned. It is merely waiting for a better time to come back for its implementation. I believe they will do it.

However, let me tell you that those states or people that are currently against it will, in the future, embrace it, when they see the lots of advantages in it. Though it may take five, ten or less years, I can say categorically that in the nearest future, many states in the Southern part of the country will willingly embrace, adopt and implement RUGA settlement in their domains.c

Entertainers await Sanwo-Olu’s road map for creative industry

creative industry

Prominent entertainers in Lagos State have expressed their desire to key into the road map of the state governor, Babjide Sanwo-Olu, for the creative industry as they tasked the number one man in the state to roll out his plans.

Sanwo-Olu had promised to pay attention to the creative industry during some of his interactive sessions with stakeholders in the industry in the build-up to the election that brought him into government.

A popular comedian, Okey Bakassi, while speaking with R on his expectations from the state government, said he and other entertainers were waiting on the road map of the governor and his team for the creative industry.

Buhari signs bill to establish Daura Federal Poly, others

According to him, the creative industry is one sector that governments at all levels have not really paid attention to, insisting that if the government could only create enabling environment for the practitioners, the turnover would be massive.

“I can tell you that the entertainment industry is one critical sector that the government has failed to utilise very well because they felt it is not oil industry. If the entertainers could be given that enabling environment to operate, there would be prosperity in the land. We hope that Sanwo-Olu would carry the entertainers along and implement policies that could turn things round.”

Also sharing his view, legendary DJ, DJ Jimmy Jatt, said stakeholders held series of discussions with the government last year and hoped that issues discussed at the meetings would implemented.

“I believe we had talked about how to move the industry forward. In this dispensation, I expect the government to start taking necessary steps that would show the people that something big is about to happen. We are waiting on the state government and Federal Government to do what was necessary and help the creative industry to grow,” he said.

Going down low! Why many women now prefer low haircut

Goalkeeper Stephen Henderson Joins Crystal Palace

Henderson joins the club as a free agent following recent spells at Nottingham Forest, and loans at Pompey and Wycombe Wanderers, According to Cpfc.co.uk.

A product of Aston Villa’s youth academy, Henderson made his professional debut in 2007 for Bristol City and has since played for clubs including West Ham United, Ipswich Town and Charlton Athletic.

A professional for more than 13 years, the 31-year-old ‘keeper brings a wealth of experience to SE25 and said upon signing: “It’s a privileged position so I’m delighted to get it over the line. I spoke to Dean Kiely and he said: ‘Do you fancy coming in and having the opportunity to work with the lads?’ Obviously it’s a no-brainer and I jumped at the opportunity.

“Training [on Friday] was absolutely excellent. The goalkeepers are at a very high standard which is what I expected so I’m just going to take it all in and learn from them and try to support them as best I can. Just seeing this morning on my first day, the standards are what I expected from two top Premier League goalkeepers.

“I’ve played at Selhurst Park in recent years and it’s a very daunting ground to play at. The fans are known for their home and away support but particularly at Selhurst so it would be amazing to witness it first hand.”

Henderson travelled with Roy Hodgson’s squad to Switzerland today for the upcoming pre-season tour.

10th WSICE holds in three states

Tribune Online
10th WSICE holds in three states

NINE years after it was last held in Lagos, some activities of the 10th annual Wole Soyinka International Cultural Exchange (WSICE), will happen in the Centre of Excellence

Held to celebrate the birthday of the Nobel Laureate since 2010, the 10th WSICE, marking the 85th birthday of Prof Soyinka, and a decade of consistent programming by the Teju Kareem and Professor Segun Ojewuyi-led Open Door Series will hold from July 12 to 15 in Lagos, Abeokuta, Ogun State (its home for the past eight years) and Akure, the Ondo State capital.

While most students/youth-focused programmes like Essay Writing, Workshop, Youth Creative Expressions would still take place in Abeokuta, the mentoring session will hold in Akure. The adult session – Advocacy session, drama, dance and poetry performances, film screening and book presentations amongst others would hold at Freedom Park, Lagos Island.

Oshiomhole backs Governor Bello on indirect primaries

On Friday, July 12, the advocacy session exploring Soyinka’s body of works to reflect on the concepts of Rights, Honour, Respect, Patriotism, Tolerance and Humanism will hold in the Kongi’s Harvest Art Gallery, Freedom Park.  It will be followed by the presentation of three books, the first being a compilation of winning essays by past winners of the annual WSICE essays competition titled ‘Memo on our Future: Essays by Nigerian Childrenas inspired by Wole Soyinka’s Visions’. The second book is ‘Igho goes to School’, a children book by the culture journalist, AnoteAjeluorou, which reprint has been facilitated by the WSICE — to be distributed to about 1000 students across the country; and introduction of ‘The Soyinka Impulse: Essays on Wole Soyinka’ edited by Duro Oni and Bisi Adigun. It is published by Bookcraft and is a collection of presentations by scholars during an international conference held during Soyinka’s 80th birthday five years ago.

The Creative Majesty Theatre Company will present Soyinka’s ‘Childe Internationale’ later that afternoon while an interdisciplinary artist and activist based in Los Angeles, California, Rebecca Jackson-Moeser, will coordinate the Projection Theatre segment featuring the Kendrick and McKenzie multiple projection surfaces.  The day’s event would be rounded off with a musical and poetry session, featuring performers at the Food Court.

On July 13, Soyinka’s birthday, 85 preselected students from schools around Nigeria will participate in the Essay Writing Competition at the Ijegba Forest Theatre close to Soyinka’s home in Abeokuta.  Do Your Own Thing, a talent display event will happen at the same venue.  The 85 finalists will have the opportunity of asking Prof Soyinka any question of their choice the following day at an interaction with him in his residence while the results of the essay competition would also be announced.

Wife of the Ondo State Governor, Mrs Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu, will mentor the 85 students alongside other 500 senior secondary school students from the state on Monday, July 15 in Akure. The participants will also be presented with copies of the WSICE @ 10 books, ‘Memo to our Future… ‘and ‘Igho Goes to the Farm’ at the occasion.

Speaking on the celebration, Co-Executive Producer of the WSICE, Kareem explained that it’s not a mere festival or party of Soyinka’s birthday. “The OpenDoorSeries/WSICE is not to be misconstrued as a mere celebration of Wole Soyinka’s date of birth – the man is not, in any way, really interested in such vanities as staging a party to celebrate his yearly birthday. The project is designed to celebrate the quintessential artiste as a renowned promoter of the good of humanity. And especially to set his exemplary philosophies and visionary ideas as promoted in his works and lifestyle as real examples for peoples across race, gender, age, religious and political persuasions, especially the young ones, who need models they can relate to,” he said.

Kareem also disclosed why the celebration is being taken to the Freedom Park. He said, “The resolve to take the 10th-anniversary celebration to the Freedom Park, which remains the topmost hub for artistic productions and creative expressions in the country, is partly in recognition of Wole Soyinka’s status as the patron saint of the Park, and of creativity in Nigeria and Africa.”

Dear Governor Kayode Fayemi…

Tribune Online
Dear Governor Kayode Fayemi…

JAMB Husband, adeleke NASS efcc Oyetola

LAST week, I published Governor Kayode Fayemi’s rejoinder to my piece “Eventually, Fayemi wins the argument” of 9 June. The rejoinder was signed off by one of his media aides, Segun Dipe. Having fulfilled my promise to publish Governor Fayemi, I hereby also fulfil the promise to publish a response to their rejoinder.

Segun Dipe headed Punch’s Business Desk for a spell. The likes of Orezina Agbodo (of blessed memory), Demola Akinbola, Weneso Orogun, John Uwe, Kunle Somorin, Oladele Adekunle, Akintunde Imolehin (Property PUNCH) and so on were those who took Financial PUNCH to dizzying heights in those days. True professionals hallow their News Editors and Editors; only reporters without manners drag theirs on the floor for filthy lucre. I do not have glass chin. I take as much hard punches as I give; hence, I had no problem publishing them last week in this same column they said does not command respect or attention but which they, all the same, could spend precious time and resources responding to! Apt is the Yoruba saying that esin ota eni o ki n ga l’oju eni. Incidentally, I do not see them as enemies, but I firmly believe they blatantly rigged the July 14, 2018 Ekiti governorship election. To date, I see Fayemi as a brother and friend; except he sees me otherwise.

FG, govs to recruit N-Power cadets, corps members for community policing

Fayemi’s Chief Press Secretary, Yinka Oyebode, was exceptionally professional for the period I interacted with Fayemi in their first term. I was not surprised he dodged putting his name to their scurrilous rejoinder, whereas, it is a fool who dances on a turf where even angels fear to tread. But Oyebode could have approached me directly. I have a lot of respect for him. Fayemi, I chose to keep a distance from, until the election case was settled. That was the least respect I believe I owed Professor Kolapo Olusola Eleka, a gentleman to the core who, I must confess, I now treat as a precious friend. After the Supreme Court judgment, Eleka congratulated Fayemi and put the election behind him – and that was not without my input. Two days before that judgment, Ayodele Fayose congratulated Fayemi for his appointment as chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, describing the appointment as well-deserved. I cannot cry more than the bereaved! If, as a media consultant, they say it is wrong for me to “consult” for Fayose who asked for my advice, why was it not wrong when I acted similarly for Fayemi? The “Man of the Year” award which Fayemi collected during his first tenure from Champion newspapers, I facilitated it. It was okay. I visited Ekiti several times on Fayemi’s invitation; it was okay. I was invited to follow his electioneering campaign and offer advice. It was okay. I prayed for Fayemi. I offered him pieces of advice as governor and as minister. It was okay. But doing similarly for Fayose is a crime in their warped reckoning! It is like once you have played for Barca, you dare not cross over to Real Madrid or from Real to Atletico! I am not, and was never, on Fayose’s payroll. Fayose sought after me. I initially rebuffed him. As it pleased Fayose, he appreciated my services, just like Fayemi did.

Fayemi has his good points; Fayose, too. Both have their drawbacks. I cannot endorse or accept any of them warts and all. The role played by Fayemi and others of the exile in the struggle for the enthronement of democracy, especially as it pertains to Radio Kudirat, cannot be forgotten in a hurry. I dare to say, however, that while Fayose is an open book, Fayemi is crossword puzzle. Fayose became the lone voice in the wilderness, standing up against the excesses and atrocities of the Muhammadu Buhari-led administration. Whatever you say about Fayose, you will never take that away from him. Fayose defended his Ekiti people against mindless and murderous Fulani herders; his anti-open grazing law and ferocious speeches curbed them. Since he left office, Ekiti has become the killing fields of Fulani herdsmen. Fayemi, at best, has been ambivalent on a burning issue that demands firm and prompt action. “The hottest places in Hell,” says Dante, “are reserved for those who, in times of moral crisis, maintain their neutrality.” We are in such a time in Nigeria today!  I told Fayemi hard truths. I told him he would lose in 2014 and why – and it happened. That was before “federal might.” What did Fayemi’s ministerial appointment fetch Ekiti or the South-West? How can I then root for him to become president? It appears to me Fayose will better defend South-West interests than Fayemi. But I also told Fayose hard truths: On his controversy with Olukere over the cutting of a tree at Ikere; his demolition exercises; the shock sacking of his Chief Press Secretary, Idowu Adelusi; his tough speech at the Ewi’s palace, to mention but a few. He would rage at first but, eventually, would have a re-think and do the needful.

Interestingly, I met Fayose fortuitously. He called me to complain that even after the 2014 election; I was still in his throat promoting Fayemi. Honestly, I had thought Fayemi a saint and Fayose the devil incarnate. But after having the opportunity of seeing Fayose at close quarters, I saw that he, too, had a good side. Put this side-by-side the very sad episode of the unravelling of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its leaders, which gets worse each passing day! Today, millions of Nigerians who once rooted for APC and its leaders, this writer inclusive, are disappointed; their impunity, vaulting arrogance, sheer hypocrisy and crass incompetence rankle.

As close as I was to Fayose, I took no contract or land. He made me his “eyes and ears” over the payment of compensation at Ikere dualisation project. He told me of Ikere’s electoral importance to him. I performed the task and saved the state tens of millions of naira that could have been pocketed by unscrupulous workers. I did not receive a dime as bribe from anyone and took no payment from Fayose either. Ditto the Ilawe dual carriageway project whose compensation payment Fayose also drafted me to supervise.

He told me: “Falana is my enemy and he is from Ilawe.” He probably did not know that the same Falana (Comrade FF, as I fondly call him) was, and still is, my Comrade, friend, brother and benefactor!

On how I left PUNCH, they tried to be clever by half, pretending they disapproved, but their innuendoes, sarcasm, and scantily-concealed jabs gave them away! Thank you, any way, for your crocodile tears! But I will not be dragged, at this most inauspicious of times, to open old wounds or pile the misery; reasons being that all true and genuine PUNCHERS are mourning in solidarity with our Chairman Emeritus, Chief Ajibola Ogunsola, who just lost his 48-year-old daughter. Whatever any one may say, the story of PUNCH’s meteoric rise to stardom will be incomplete without a copious mention of Chief Ogunsola’s preponderantly good contributions. May the good Lord comfort him and his family in these trying times!

Suffice it to say, however, that men and women of conscience too numerous to mention were actually aghast at the way I exited PUNCH. PUNCH director, Mr. Lolu Foresythe (now of blessed memory), was lost for word. Tears welled in the eyes of Mrs. Angela Emuwa, then a director but now PUNCH chairman. Gani Fawehinmi was livid. His hand shook as he read the letter and his voice quaked. Let me not say more! It is, therefore, wicked, malicious and unacceptable that my illustrious career at the PUNCH would be whimsically distorted simply to mock me.

Kabir Dangogo, my God-sent who was then Principal Manager/Head, Corporate Affairs, Union Bank PLC, who called and gave me the contract to edit and print the bank’s newsletters, and Wada Maida, then MD of NAN, told me: “Bola, we don’t treat ourselves the way you Yoruba treat yourselves.”

The professionally sound, astute and erudite editor of this title [Sunday Tribune], Sina Oladeinde, informed me last Wednesday, as I finished the first draft of this piece, that Segun Dipe had called him to express remorse. I wasted no time in appreciating Sina and whole-heartedly accepting Dipe’s apologies. Later on Friday, Dipe himself called and we spoke at length. Like in times past, I extended my hands of fellowship to Governor Fayemi. I have, therefore, seriously watered down this response. But that the ears that heard alo (the going) may also hear the abo (the return) is why I still had to pen this response to their rejoinder.

COZA, Senator Abbo: Osun State is next!

Of truth is the Yoruba adage that says 20-year-old pounded yam can still steam really hot as if freshly prepared. Ask ‘Pastor’ Biodun Fatoyinbo of Commonwealth of Zion Assembly. The “pounded yam” he allegedly “ate” 20 years ago is steamy hot in his mouth right now! Rapists, paedophiles, child- and women-abusers should not be given an inch but must be smoked out of their “close places” as the Bible calls it.

So also must those who abuse their positions and privileges like the errant PDP Senator Elisha Abbo. I watched his apology; it was the right thing to do. Still, he must be brought to book; his remorse and penitence may count but for no reason must he escape punishment for his dastardly act. He should also be made to pay compensation to his victims.

I hereby appeal to social media, civil society groups, organisations and individuals who combined to bring COZA and Abbo on their kneels to move to Osogbo, Osun State, and focus attention on the case of the alleged defilement a four-year-old girl by the driver (Oyelakin Oluwatomisin) of a politically-connected private school (Charleston Group of Schools, Kelebe, Osogbo) whose powerful owners are said to be Mr and Mrs Adeyemi.

Osun State government appears to be dragging its foot on the matter. I personally took the matter up with the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Dr. Charles Akinola; I have also repeatedly written about it as well as called the attention of civil society organisations. The powerful people involved in this case are even said to include a first-class traditional ruler in the state and they have all been piling undue pressure on the family of the victim. On one occasion, Akinola made me speak to “someone” I suspected could be Governor Gboyega Oyetola himself, who denied that the state was on the side of the vile rapist and paedophile. He promised to get justice for the victim. But the case has suffered diligent prosecution. The magistrate almost threw it out. The accused was released from Ilesha prison and now not only walks about a free man, but also, with his gang terrorising, intimidating and mocking the family of the victim.

The case comes up again tomorrow (Monday, 8 July). At the last hearing, which was two months ago, they said the case file would have left the DPP’s office for onward transmission to the High Court. I have enough “locus standi” in this case, as the lawyers would say; apart from being public-spirited, the victim’s mother is my niece and the entire family is gutted.

While I congratulate Governor Gboyega Oyetola on his mint-fresh victory at the Supreme Court, he should please see to it that justice is done in this matter.

LAST WORD: Congratulations, Oluwadare Aragbaye, on your well-deserved appointment as Head of Service of Ondo State. Not only was Dare my junior at Owo High School, he is also unassuming, humble, courteous, respectful, and dutiful. His elder brother, “Brother” Bola Aragbaye (who translated lately), was instrumental to my starting my journalism career at the Sketch newspapers, Ibadan. Dare, may your tenure be fruitful! Aketi s’okan yi!

Police warn as cultists plan to celebrate ‘7/7 anniversary’ today

Police warn as cultists plan to celebrate ‘7/7 anniversary’ today

Police

AS cult groups from some parts of the country plan to hold a festival of cultism today, police authorities in Lagos, Oyo and Kwara states have warned them against holding such celebrations in the states.

The cult groups have used past celebrations of July 7 code-named 7/7 to either initiate new members or visit violent vengeance on perceived opponents.

Investigation revealed that previous festivals in notable areas of Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, were trailed by violence and criminal activities among members of cult groups.

Some of the notable areas in the state capital, where the cult activities were witnessed in the recent past included Ibrahim Taiwo road, Kulende, Sabo Oke, Agaka, Eruda, Agbo Oba, Stadium Road, Irewolede I and II and Oyun areas, among other communities.

The violent cult activities, which are usually led by students of both secondary and higher institutions in the state, also involved artisans like vulcanizers, bricklayers, commercial motorcycle riders, tricycle operators, among others.

Oshiomhole backs Governor Bello on indirect primaries

But the Kwara State Police Command said that it had put in place adequate security measures throughout the state to check the development which it described as unacceptable.

The state Police Commissioner, Kayode Egbetokun, in a statement at the weekend, advised students to shun any suspicious gathering of young men and women in their environments and report any suspicious movements to the police.

Similarly, the police in Oyo State, on Saturday, warned secret cult groups popularly known as Aiye and Eiye confraternities against unlawful gathering.

The police in the state gave the warning in a statement by its Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Olugbenga Fadayi, in Ibadan.

Fadayi quoted the state’s Commissioner of Police, Shina Olukolu, as saying that the command had been notified that  “Aiye and Eiye ’’ held their annual celebrations on July 7 and August 8 respectively  across the states in the South-West zone.

He said that the police in Oyo State were on top of the situation and were working to clamp down on the aforementioned secret cult groups.

The police spokesperson quoted the commissioner as warning the cultists not to attempt to test the “will and capacity” of the police and other security agencies in the state to respond to and deal with any threat to peace and order.

“The command enjoins the people of the state to go about their lawful businesses as the police will not give any breathing space to these unscrupulous elements to create chaos in the state,’’ Fadayi said.

Also, the  police  in Lagos State, on Saturday, warned  suspected  cultists across the state with a  “show of force exercise”  in different  parts of the state to prevent  any breakdown of law and order.

Armed policemen were on patrol in many parts of the state to show suspected cult members of their readiness in case of any attempt to foment trouble today.

Sunday Tribune also gathered that the state Commissioner of Police, Zubairu Muazu, has warned parents to call their children to order as the police would not spare anyone planning to cause trouble in the state.

The state police boss also directed all area commanders and divisional police officers to ensure regular patrol from Saturday till the end of Sunday.

A senior police officer, who spoke with the Sunday Tribune on condition of anonymity, said “we had a show of force exercise  in different parts of the state today [Saturday] to warn suspected cultists.”

The police chief also added that “the area commanders have been directed to ensure that they ensure  regular patrol across their divisions and area command from today (Saturday) till the end of Sunday.

Parts of Lagos notorious for cult killings during such celebration in the last few years include Ikorodu,  Ajah, Somolu, Bariga  and  Ayobo.
