What Arsenal, Napoli Target Kieran Tierney Is Worth As Celtic Hold Firm On £25m Valuation

One of the biggest transfer sagas of the summer has been the potential departure of Kieran Tierney from Scottish football, According to Footballscotland.co.uk.

The Celtic left-back is being targeted by both Arsenal and Napoli, but so far there has been no deal struck to sign him.

Manager Neil Lennon has confirmed there has been an offer for Tierney, but made clear that Celtic won’t budge on their valuation of one of their star talents.

Given that he’s played for Scotland and in the Champions League it’s understandable that Tierney’s club expect a big fee for him, but is their asking price too high?

The left-back spent much of last season battling an injury problem, which required surgery over the summer.

On the other hand, some would say that £25m is too low a valuation, given that Aaron Wan Bissaka moved to Manchester United for £50m after only 46 appearances for Crystal Palace and no international caps.

What kind of fee would you be demanding for Kieran Tierney if you were in Neil Lennon or Peter Lawwell’s shoes?

Have your say with our player rater above…

PSG Officially State One Of Their Brazilians To Be Up For Sale

In an interview with Le Parisien, PSG’s new sporting director Leonardo admitted that Neymar will be allowed to leave the club if they receive an offer that equals what they’re asking for the player. This comes after Barca president Josep Maria Bartomeu in an interview said that Neymar wants to leave PSG but the club does not want him to go. The Catalan clubs president seemed to have ended the chances of Barca signing Neymar and following the series of events that have been taking place over the past few weeks, this revelation by Leonardo comes as no surprise, According to Playingfor90.com.

When asked if Neymar had expressed his desire to leave Paris Saint-Germain, Leonardo stated that it was clear to everyone what Neymar really wants but the football world is unpredictable and anything can happen over a day. Leonardo also commented on the players absence from PSG’s pre-season training stating that the player knew that he had to arrive but he didn’t and that the club will take necessary measures against him, like they would have done against any other employee of the club.

When asked if Neymar would leave PSG this summer, Leonardo said the following, confirming the fact that the Brazilian is up for sale :

Leonardo also confirmed that talks have been held between Paris Saint-Germain and FC Barcelona regarding Neymar but nothing was official and no offer had been made for the player by the Catalan giants.

When asked whether PSG didn’t want to keep Neymar at the club, Leonardo replied saying :

The PSG sporting director also shed light on the fact that he had spoken to Neymar’s entourage and that the position of the given situation is clear for everyone and irrespective of everything else, the Brazilian forward still has three more years on his PSG contract. These comments from the sporting director come on the same day as the club announced that they would take appropriate action against Neymar for taking an unauthorized leave and missing the pre-season training.

This nothing but indicates that things might have gone sour between the two parties and Leonardo is no longer willing to tolerate Neymar’s indiscipline and is ready to let him go if they receive the right offer.

The recurring Ijegun pipeline fires

The recurring Ijegun pipeline fires

Ijegun fire

FIRE disasters associated with the impairment of petroleum product facilities have more or less become a recurring decimal in Ijegun community, Lagos State. While some were accidental, a lot more were self-inflicted and patently avoidable. The incident that happened in the same area few days ago reportedly culminated in the loss of lives. Twenty-one persons  sustained varying degrees of injury,  about 30 vehicles were destroyed and scores of lock-up shops were ravaged in the conflagration. The fire, which started in the wee hours of the day and raged till 3p.m., reportedly followed the trail of spilled Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) in drainage channels, wreaking havoc in about seven streets in the neighbourhood.

Sadly, the catastrophe was clearly avoidable because if the vandals had not tampered with the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) product pipelines, the inferno and the accompanying damage to life and property would not have happened. It is rather unfortunate that this is always happening in Ijegun and many are asking what exactly the problem is. Is there collusion between the security operatives officially assigned to secure the pipelines and the vandals? Why is it that the criminals are seldom apprehended before they compromise the facility when it actually takes long hours to impair the pipelines in order to steal PMS? And why is it that no one seems to have learnt any lessons from fatal and disastrous precedents?

The usual narrative is that some dyed-in-the-wool criminals break the pipelines, steal products with tankers and leave the facilities in a state of disrepair after having their fill. They abandon the facilities, leaving the valves opened while escaping from security agents. Oftentimes, disaster occurs when innocent but obviously undisciplined persons go to scoop petroleum products from the compromised pipelines. The same scenario is usually replicated whenever a petroleum tanker is involved in an accident spilling its contents: it is common to see ordinary Nigerians scooping inflammable products from the scenes of such accidents, even though they have seen or heard about the tragedy that struck elsewhere in similar situations. Such is the precipitate steps that many Nigerians take to tide over the hardship and misery in the land and, in the process, they completely throw caution to the wind and put their lives at needless risk.

Yes, government may have fallen short in the delivery of good governance that is capable of alleviating the suffering of the people, but that cannot be sufficient justification for engaging in criminal actions that approximate suicide.  And in the real sense of it, pipeline vandals could hardly be described as poor because the fairly huge cost of the technology and equipment they deploy in breaking pipelines and evacuating their loot are such that the poor cannot afford. It is the secondary thieves who steal the leftovers of the vandals that fit the description of the underprivileged. And even at that, no reasonable person, no matter how deprived, should gravely endanger his or her life in the course of trying to eke out an existence. After all, only the living can enjoy any improvement in their economic situation.  Also, because of the inflammable nature of the products the vandals spill into the environment while engaging in larceny, innocent people who did not in any way partake in the heinous activities but are in proximate area of the scene of the crime often lose their lives and property to fire. This is most unfortunate and intolerable.

Beyond the panic they generate in the people living in the neighbourhood, the regular fires cause environmental, economic and human losses that should not be tolerated in any civilised clime. It has, therefore, become imperative that residents of Ijegun community be safety-conscious because even though the incident under reference affected seven streets in the area, such explosions can actually wipe out the entire community. For instance, on October 18, 1998, there was a vandalism-induced fire disaster in Jesse, near Mosorga, in Ethiope West Local Government Area of Delta State. The whole community was almost wiped out as  over a thousand lives were lost, many of them innocent citizens. It is rather unsettling that some who had witnessed, read or heard about this monumental tragedy and scores of others thereafter are still engaging in the nefarious activity of pipeline vandalism, while others seem to tolerate the vandals by pretending not to notice their activities. Those vandals are not spirits; they live among the people and must have insiders who give them information on when to strike and when not to.

Perhaps it should be mentioned that Ijegun community has a responsibility to protect government facilities sited within its domain. This, it should carry out by cooperating with the security agents charged with securing the facilities by availing them of useful information that can help the security to ambush and arrest criminals before they strike. We urge the security agencies to stand up to be counted by reining in vandalism-related fire incidents. The alleged inter-agency rivalry which reportedly reared its ugly head at the scene of the crime must not be allowed to vitiate the official handling of this grievous incident. This is one fire incident too many and it must be thoroughly investigated and the culprits brought to book.

PTDF Boss Charges Scholars To Be Good Ambassadors

Abuja – The Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF) has urged shortlisted scholars of its 2019/2020 overseas Masters of Science (MSc) and Doctors of Philosophy (PhD) scholarship scheme to be good ambassadors of the country while studying abroad.

Executive Secretary of PTDF Dr Bello Aliyu Gusau, gave the charge on Monday during the induction of 342 scholarship beneficiaries in Abuja.

Gusau said that 194 scholars are in pursuit of Masters of Science (MSc) programme, while 148 are for Doctors of Philosophy (PhD).

He described the PTDF scholarship scheme as the best in the country said that the programme was tailored to help develop the country’s oil and gas sector.

“You have passed through very rigorous process and you are among the few selected from thousands of applications received and starting from today, you are now in the list of awardees of PTDF scholarships.

“The PTDF scholarship is the best in Nigeria because it is structured in a manner to ensure that we exclusively take care of our students and in turn the oil and gas sector.

“Please, make sure you complete your studies as at when due, so that we don’t make further commitments on you because we want to channel resources to other beneficiaries.

“Ensure that the time allocated to you is well utilized and respect the rules and procedures of the countries and universities you are and aspire high in whatever you do.

“Be good ambassadors of Nigeria because the country is doing so much for you; after studies, come back and contribute to the well-being of the country,” Gusau said.

David Akoji, Special Adviser to Director General, National Orientation Agency (NOA), said it was the duty of the agency to impact good ethics, value and patriotism on the scholars.

This, he said would help in the way and manner the beneficiaries represent the country in the various universities abroad.

“At NOA, we try to raise citizens who are Nigeria’s diplomats in whatever country they go to.

“We want Nigerians to reflect behaviours that are in accordance with the ethics and values that are established in the 1999 constitution as amended in chapter 2 sub-sections 23 and those ethics are well spelt out in the constitution.

“They are ethics of discipline, patriotism, dignity of labour, loyalty; they are about seven of them and we want those going to study abroad to project this ethics and value so that by the way they behave people can build positive impressions about Nigeria.

“The international media will hardly project any positive thing about Nigeria, so, it is our duty as citizens when we travel outside this country to show that Nigeria is far better than what is being projected in some of the international media.

So, our aim is to bring these scholars to understand that we have so many positives in Nigeria including vast resources,” Akoji said.

He further said that Nigerian students had excelled in Ivy League schools in Europe and America.

According to her, each state of the federation presented five scholars for the MSc with the nine oil producing states having extra slots because of Federal Government’s interest in the Niger Delta and the damage of exploration in the area.

“We give extra slots to the nine oil producing states having considered the damage exploration has done in the area and we need most of them to be involved in the oil and gas industry.

“We expect them to contribute their own quota to the Nigeria oil and gas industry especially for the PhD scholars which about 70 per cent of the slot are targeted to lecture because that is the only way we can have a multiplier effect.

“For the MSc scholars, we expect them to come back, however, if they are able to secure a job in an oil and gas firm, is all part of the experience. We also expect them to come home and contribute their quota to the country’s oil and gas sector.”

She said extra six slots were giving to the female scholars in each geo political zones every year to give room for gender balancing especially in cases where male scholars are more in number.

Nsofor Colette Obioma, one of the beneficiaries from University of Port Harcourt, commended PTDF for the opportunity while assuring that the country would reap the benefit of the scholarship in the end.

She said: “Supply Chain Management is one of the key factors to consider to make money; organisations need to consider cost optimization in the process of supplying their products both inbound and outbound.

“So, oil and gas organisation in Nigeria should consider the aspect of management, how to optimize cost, maximise resources and maximise profit; some organisations will be making profit but not maximising resources and not optimising cost.

“So they might spend a lot of money to make profit, so, I am going to study Supply Chain Management and Logistics to know specifically the tools, strategy and specialist knowledge we need to optimise cost and at the same time maximise profit.

Kogi Election: Gov Aspirants Warn NWC To Avoid Zamfara Scenario

Abuja – As the gubernatorial of the Kogi State draws near, twenty-one governorship aspirants on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), in the State have warned the National Working Committee to be wary of playing out the Zamfara scenario where all the efforts of the party were nullified in favour of an opposition party.

The aspirants gave the warning in a letter addressed to the Adams Oshiomhole, the National Chairman of the party, dated 7th July 2019, and signed by the duo of Gen. Patrick Akpa (retd), Chairman, and Comrade Gowon Egbunu, Secretary.

The group said their position was in the reaction of the outcome of the meeting of the National Working Committee of APC which reportedly met on Friday, July 5th, 2019 and adopted an Indirect Primary election in picking a gubernatorial candidate for the November 16th, 2019 governorship election in Kogi State.

“At an emergency meeting of twenty-one governorship aspirants in Kogi State held on Sunday, July 7th, 2019, we reviewed the decision of the National Working Committee vis-a-vis our aspiration and resolved as follows:

“That the planned adoption of the Indirect Party Primary is inherent with serious negative consequences for the fortune of the Party in Kogi State.

“We regret to observe that such decision was taken without adequate consultation with critical stakeholders of the Party in the state especially the governorship aspirants on the platform of the Party and other contending groups in the polarized structure of the Party in the State.

“The decision to adopt an Indirect Primary by the National Working Committee is fraught with severe implications. First, contrary to the information given to the National Working Committee, there are suits pending in an Abuja court seeking to determine the authentic executive of the Party in the State (see attached). As a matter of fact, at the last hearing, the suit was adjourned till October 2, 2019. Second, arising from the pendency of the various suits to determine the legitimate Party executive council in the State, the use of any factional delegate list may amount to an exercise in futility. And lastly, we may have unconsciously set a booby-trap for our Party and the stage for the replay of the unfortunate Zamfara scenario.

“We observe that as a Party committed to the enthronement of popular democracy, the resort to an Indirect Primary in the Kogi State chapter of the APC amounts to a muzzling of the wish of the generality of our Party members, a victory for merchandised political culture and a deference to Governor Yahaya Bellos wish to be the judge in his own case.

“It is on record that Bellos factional Party executive council members, which he is angling as delegates for the Indirect Primary are peopled by his political appointees and loyalists who are on the payroll of the State Government. It is also instructive to note that nearly all the 21 local governments Party Chairmen are Governor Yahaya Bellos coordinators. To subject other aspirants to this hostile political mechanism in the name of Indirect Primary amounts to a clear case of political ambush, gross act of injustice and trust betrayed.

“Whereas Governorship election for Kogi and Bayelsa States are scheduled for November 16th, 2019, we note with sadness the selective approach of the National Working Committee in treating the primary election in Kogi State in isolation of that of Bayelsa State.

“As loyal Party men, we would not fold our arms and allow our Party to suffer huge political loss arising from the narrow ambition of a non-performing State governor.

“Arising from these cogent observations, we categorically reject the Indirect Primary adopted by our Party for Kogi State. We urge the national leadership to set up an independent caretaker management committee without delay with the sole mandate of providing a level playing ground for a Popular Direct Primary involving all card-carrying members.

“The meeting was attended by the following governorship aspirants:

Pharm. Aliyu Zakari-Jiya, Dr. Tim Diche, Alhaji Yusuf Haruna, Admiral Usman Jibrin (Rtd), Alhaji Mohammed Audu, Alhaji Mohammed Ali, Alhaji Sani Lulu Abdullahi, Alhaji Jibrin Haruna Mohammed, Alhaji Yakubu Mohammed, Sheik Ibrahim Jibril, Chief Momoh Y. Obaro, Prince Sani H. Shuaibu, Comrade Gowon Egbunu, Prince Sanni Shuaibu, Prince Mustapha Mona Audu, Alh. Ahmed Ibrahim Aruwa, Gen. Akpa Patrick, Engr. Sunday Edibo, Khalid Adams, Alh.Yusuf Ali and Prof. Seidu Mohammed” the letter reads in parts.

Group Raises The Alarm On Nigeria’s Economy

A group known as Social Integrity Network has warned that Nigeria’s economy is on the verge of collapse and requires urgent actions by the technical know-how.

The group who disclosed that Nigeria remains the economic giant of Africa as evidently revealed by statistics and recurrent circumstances attributed the many havocs bedeviling the country’s economy to some government monitoring agencies, especially those who are directly involved in the economic and security sectors.

The group’s National Coordinator, Jubrin Abdulmalik said its investigation into the nation’s port management and pre-shipment management has revealed that the nation’s security has been exposed to abuse, gross misconducts, undue connivance as well as aiding and abetting illegal importation of substandard products into the country.

According to him, “The security challenges bedeviling Nigeria cannot be defeated if activities of such monitoring agencies are not checked, as firearms may be finding their ways into Nigeria through such means.

“The administration of President Muhammadu Buhari had over the years shown serious concerns and attention towards ensuring that rapid economic recovery is achieved thereby graduating to sustainability through the support of stakeholders in the various sectors of the nation.

“While corruption can only be perceived as a problem biting hard in all sectors of the nation, accomplices of such acts are nothing but rebels and saboteurs who are hindering the laudable initiatives of Federal Government through its monetary and regulatory agencies.

“Our investigation into the nation’s port management and pre-shipment management has revealed that the nation’s security has been exposed to abuse, gross misconducts, undue connivance as well as aiding and abetting illegal importation of substandard products into the country at the detriment of the masses.”

Ugwuanyi Appoints Jay Jay Okocha, Ex-NBC Boss, Others As Reform C’ttee Members

Enugu – Former Super Eagles Captain, Austin ‘Jay Jay’ Okocha and former Director-General of the Nigerian Broadcasting Commission (NBC), Mr. Emeka Mbah are among professionals, technocrats and experts, inaugurated on Monday by Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State as members of the last batch of the sectoral ad-hoc committees to review various sectors of the state government and design roadmaps for optimized service delivery and advancement of good governance in the state.

It would be recalled that Gov. Ugwuanyi recently inaugurated the first batch of seven ad-hoc committees in the sectors of education; health; public service reform; security; justice; water and chieftaincy/ community matters.

Inaugurating the remaining five sectoral committees, namely agriculture and rural development; finance, review of Internally Generated Revenue and international development partners’ funding; lands, housing and transport; sustainable environmental and urban management; and youths and sports development, Gov. Ugwuanyi listed ‘Jay Jay’ Okocha as the technical adviser of youths and sports committee and Mr. Mbah as the Chairman.

Presenting the committees’ terms of reference, the governor, who expressed the desire of his administration to perform better in its IGR growth and other economic indices to improve the socio-economic wellbeing of the people of Enugu State, stated that the finance committee shall assist in designing “a roadmap to further boost positive returns on our assets, increase our IGR and optimize outcomes of development partner support”.

He added that the strategy was also in keeping with President Muhammadu Buhari’s call on state governors to prioritize their IGR drive for the wellbeing of their people, stating that “the economic viability of states in Nigeria is benchmarked on the parity between their Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) and their share of federal account allocations”.

According to him, “although Enugu State is currently ranked as the 7th most economically viable state in Nigeria, we seek to perform better for the sake of improving the lives of our people and fulfilling our electoral promises”.

On agriculture and rural development, Gov. Ugwuanyi, who noted that Enugu is predominantly a rural and agrarian state, with a substantial proportion of its working population engaged in farming, disclosed that the committee, is expected to design a workable roadmap to boost farming/agro-allied businesses in the state to generate mass employment and proffer a sustainable strategy to boost orderly and integrated development of the rural areas.

On youths and Sports Development, the governor who described the youth as the engine of economic growth pointed out that Enugu State has sports talents who have won laurels within and outside the shores of the country, stressing that programmes and sponsorship are required to continue discovering and developing these youthful talents.

“The committee on youths and sports development will proffer strategies for achieving this, and for engaging the youth in sports development, character building, entrepreneurship, skills acquisition and participation in good governance”, he added.

Emphasizing the need to articulate a sustainable environmental management strategy that will deploy different initiatives to address various ecological issues affecting the state and forestall ecological disasters and environmental crisis, Gov. Ugwuanyi disclosed that the committee on the sector “is expected to dutifully look at the totality of our interaction with terrestrial, aquatic and atmospheric environment for sustainable development, having due regard to biodiversity conservation and ecosystem balance”.

The governor further stated that the committee on lands, housing and transport is also expected to undertake a situation analysis of Enugu State’s potentials and enviable status as one of the safest states in Nigeria to live in, ranking second in Ease of Doing Business and third in Ease of Starting Business, that has witnessed a growing demand for land, housing and transport.

“To meet these demands, we intend to improve our land administration and management, boost orderly housing development and establish a modern intra-state transport system”, the governor revealed.

Appreciating members of the committees for accepting to serve the state, Gov. Ugwuanyi expressed confidence that they will deploy their wealth of experience, expertise and commitment to add value to the governance of Enugu State.

Responding on behalf of other members of the five newly inaugurated committees, the chairman of sustainable environmental and urban management sector, Prof. Smart Uchegbu, thanked the governor for assembling “the cream of professionals” to carry out the all-important assignment.

Prof. Uchegbu expressed delight at the pioneering  innovation adopted by Gov. Ugwuanyi to improve service delivery and good governance in Enugu State, saying: “I am really overwhelmed that for the first time, we see a dynamic governor joyfully assembling a cream of professionals to work with him, to assist him achieve more of what he has already achieved”.

He commended the numerous achievements of the governor towards the rapid development of the state, adding that he was proud that “Enugu State is number one state in the area of security and one of the cleanest and most beautiful states in Nigeria” and firmly in the hands of God.

The committee chairman also expressed satisfaction with the governor’s empowerment programmes, especially in the area of job creation, maintaining that the “history of Enugu State can never be said without somebody like you who has always been directed by God Almighty”.

Tottenham Make £45.6m Bid To Sign Liverpool Target As Pochettino Continues Overhaul

Tottenham have tabled an offer worth £20.6m in cash plus Toby Alderweireld for the signature of Liverpool target Nicolo Zaniolo.

Zaniolo has emerged as one of the most highly-rated youngsters in Italian football since joining AS Roma from Inter Milan last summer as the 20-year-old forced his way into their starting eleven with a string of impressive performances accordingto reports in Italy via The Sun.

The attacking midfielder contributed 6 goals and 2 assists in his 36 appearances in all competitions last season and he made his debut for the senior Italian national team back in March after being given a call-up by boss Roberto Mancini.

Zaniolo’s huge potential has alerted clubs here in the Premier League as The Sun are citing a report from Corriere dello Sport that claims Tottenham and Liverpool have both expressed an interest in the midfielder.

Jurgen Klopp is only expected to make minor changes to his Champions League winning squad this summer and a midfielder isn’t thought to be a priority so the Italian publication says Liverpool were hoping to wait until next summer before formalising their interest in Zaniolo.

However, that’s likely to be too late as Corriere dello Sport claims the youngster is expected to leave Roma this summer and Tottenham have now tabled a firm offer worth £20.6m [€23m] in cash plus they’ve included Alderweireld as part of the deal.

Madagascar Shock Congo DR To Reach Quarter Final

Lagos – Madagascar continue their giant-killing performance at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations with a 4-2 penalty win over the Democratic Republic of Congo on Sunday.

The debutants thus qualified for the quarter final. Amada fired Madagascar into the lead from a great team move by the Malagasy on the near side as Andriatsima held on to the ball and allowed his teammates to penetrate the Congo DR defence.

The ball eventually fell to Amada who unleashed a rocket into the top corner.

Cedric Bakambu drew Congo DR level with a close-range attempt after getting behind the Madagascar box. The result remained like that after the break.

But Madagascar restored their lead as Andriatsima headed his team in front from a cross in the 70th minute.

But Mbemba’s towering header hit the back of the net as Congo DR surely took the game into extra time in the 90th minute.

In the ensuing penalty kick, Congo DR missed two of their kicks as the debutants triumphed 4-2.

How I survived five assassination attempts —Osoba

Tribune Online
How I survived five assassination attempts —Osoba

people

You are in the forefront of journalism profession in the country. Can you give an insight into your adventure into it, and why you chose journalism as a career?

I found myself in journalism by accident. I was to study law because my closest teacher in school, the late Chief Adenola Oshuneye, wanted me to study law. He was even furious that I decided to go into journalism because I had admission into the University of Lagos to study law, but Alhaji Babatunde Jose persuaded me to jettison the idea of reading law and take up journalism. In my school days, I was a regular writer in the school magazine called the Magnate at Methodist Boys High School, Abeokuta.

What attracted you to the profession because some people of your age category said they ran away from it because they felt the proceeds from it could not take care of their families?

The attraction to journalism is the challenge because a good journalist faces challenge every day. Journalism is adventurous and educative; you learn everyday. Journalism gives exposure and for someone who is streetwise like me, I found journalism a great profession because you have the ability and training to relate with all sectors of the society, including armed robbers, prime ministers, parliamentarians and even petty thieves. For instance, I started my career as a journalist covering little crimes. A journalist must be comfortable with all sectors of the society. It is a great training ground that helped me in my years as a politician. Journalism trains someone to be a leader and to be objective. The profession trains someone to accept other people’s opinions because most of the times we publish articles and stories that we disagree totally with. A journalist’s duty is to report issues so that the public will make their judgment.

How did you break the news of the assassination of the late Prime Minister, Alhaji Abubakar Tafawa Balewa?

The story is in my book. People talk about it as if it is the only feat I achieved as a journalist. I wrote many exclusive stories. For example, when Joseph Tarka ordered a Mercedes-Benz, which became a controversial issue, I exclusively covered the issue. During the civil war, I had many exclusive stories. Even in my later years when I got to Sketch and Herald, I had many exclusive stories. For instance, the assassination of Murtala Mohammed and the capture of Dimka, I did many exclusives on them. I have full details of all that transpired then. When the then the military governor of old Kwara State, the late Colonel Ibrahim Taiwo was assassinated, I was the one who went with the Secretary to the State Government, Obatoyin, to discover the body on the road to Offa.  The case of Abdurrahman Shugaba, who was then Majority Leader of the Borno State House of Assembly, who was taken physically and thrown across the border like a stone, was another landmark. I witnessed the impeachment of the then governor of Kaduna State, Alhaji Balarabe Musa. There are many others, but there is much emphasis on the Tafawa Balewa case as if it was the only feat. However, it was the major beginning that threw me into the hall of fame.

You talked about some assassination attempts on your life. How would you recollect those moments?

Some of our people, who I would call vicious characters and I will give you examples; they are in my book, but I will give you my piece of mind on it. People like Wale Oshun, who wrote a book entitled Clapping With One Hand, he created the impression as if I was nobody in the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO) struggle and Dr Femi Okurounmu, who for years because he wanted to be governor of Ogun State, tagged me as the late Gen Sani Abacha’s turncoat. I have had the occasion to challenge them if any one of them suffered as much as I did, then they have the right to insult me otherwise they should keep their mouths shut forever. I want them to reply in details the way I have put documentations in this book, the way I have put the names of witnesses.I was the first to be arrested after the formation of NADECO by Abacha and I was taken to Kam Salem House. I mentioned Oba Rilwanu Akiolu there, who was then the Commissioner of Police that gave me his office to use after the closing hour because I was sleeping in a big hall infested with rats. I was the first to be charged to court along with Bola Tinubu and Commodore Dan Suleiman before Justice Shonowo. We were to go to jail but the judge ruled on the matter. When we were not given bail, the late Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Justice Modibbo Alfa Belgore intervened and gave us bail. I went through that. We were transferred from Kam Salem House to the Alagbon Police station, where we were taking our bath in the open as early as 6am. Tinubu, Suleiman, others and I were there. Subsequently, the attempt on my life started on August 24, 1994 when Chief MKO Abiola had returned and had then been arrested. We were to go and celebrate his (Abiola’s) first birthday in detention when they came to my house on the night of August 23. They had attempted to bomb Dan Suleiman’s house on August 22. They had attempted to set the late Chief Gani Fawehinmi’s chamber on fire. When all these attempts on Fawehinmi and Suleiman had occurred, I went into hiding. I was lucky to have escaped because they were out to eliminate me, but I was not at home. They gained access into my house without using any key. Unfortunately, the State Security Service (SSS) attached to me as a former governor, Stephen Itokpa, didn’t know that the invaders were security people, he engaged them in a shootout but after exhausting his ammunition, he escaped through the fence. That was the first attempt on my life in 1994, the rest I didn’t know until Sergeant Rogers, the government’s hit man came to give evidence in court and the Tell magazine did an interview, where he revealed all that transpired.

The second attempt was in September 1995 when they wanted to set my house on fire in Abeokuta. Also, I managed to escape because I didn’t sleep early on that day. I just heard a spark and smoke engulfed the entire room. I have all the narratives in my book. The fourth attempt was the evidence given by Sergeant Rogers in court that they were sent out to go and kill me, the late Afenifere leader, Senator Abraham Adesanya; the late publisher of The Guardian, Dr. Alex Ibru; Bola Ige and others. Another time was when they trailed me on the road to Abeokuta; the military boys on the road checkpoint waved me on, but the few minutes that they stopped them gave me the opportunity to escape. Five times I escaped attempted assassination. So when Osun and Okurounmu started talking, I looked at them as small boys in the struggle. If they didn’t go through the kind of things I went through, they should remain silent.

How come the late Sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo described you and two others as three musketeers?

I keep saying that the three of us were the youngest people  who were close to Awolowo. Of the living, those closest to Awolowo, who are my elders are Alhaji Lateef Jakande and Chief Ayo Adebanjo. The Awolowo family knew that we dined with Awolowo and got tutelage from him. We did our ‘PhD’ in public life by being mentored by him. He made us part of all organs of the Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN). There was no organ of the party that the three of us did not belong to. I can challenge them to produce the kind of photographs I took with Awolowo in Yola. I was with Papa Awolowo in Ikenne during the last broadcast that he made before the 1983 elections. I have the action photographs of those events. Can any of them produce such photographs? I have the record of all the minutes of the UPN. I want people to react to my book and I want anyone who is going to react to counter the things I said with documents. If I were to use the photographs, it would become a voluminous book. If I were to use all the documents I have, I would have ended up writing an encyclopedia. But I restrained myself from using many documents.

How would you describe the impact of your parents and that of others, who added value to your life till this moment?

I give the greatest thanks to my father, who was a disciplinarian. We were trained to wake up at 6 in the morning. Most times, we woke up before 6am and still remained in bed but whenever we heard the sound of his footsteps, we would wake up to avoid being flogged. He taught me how to be frugal. For example, when I was in secondary school, he always told me to go to UTC and Lennards stores to find out prices of shoes before making my choice. He chose the cheapest ones. I learned from him that the best material to use is guinea brocade and aso oke.My mother was a reserved person, who taught me how to respect people. Another great influence on me was my uncle, Prophet Joseph Ayo Babalola. People don’t know that I am related to him. He was one of the founders of the Christ Apostolic Church (CAC).  I spent most of my holidays with him. He was the one who named me Oluwasegun, because my mother had some children before me who did not survive. Joseph Babalola named me Oluwasegun, saying I would survive. I am 80 today and I am grateful to God and Prophet Babalola. The religious aspects of my life were learned from Prophet Babalola.

The rascality side of my life was learned in Lagos. I was a member of virtually everything. I have a picture of myself which was taken in 1964, when I was a member of the Alakoro Boys and Girls Club in Ebute Ero. We were trained on how to be streetwise. We were trained on how to serve humanity and how to serve the people. My exposure was not limited to academics as I was virtually involved in many societies, including Red Cross, Boy’s Scout, Debating Society, and Yoruba Cultural Group, among others. I had broad education.

Alhaji Babatunde Jose was a well-known and celebrated personality in the journalism profession. To what extent did he influence your rise in journalism?

After my childhood days and I decided to go into journalism, Alhaji Jose truncated my ambition of studying law and immediately made me to go to the University of Lagos in 1965. Alhaji Jakande brought the International Press Institute Training in Nairobi to Lagos. We were the pioneer people in the University of Lagos. The course later metamorphosed into the Department of Mass Communication of the University of Lagos. In 1965, expatriates were sent from the International Press Institute in London to the University of Lagos. And at the time I left the university in 1965, Alhaji Jose sent me to the United Kingdom for a course under the Commonwealth Press Union. Within two years of joining Daily Times, I had done two major courses in journalism. As of 1970, I had gone to the Indiana University, Bloomington for another diploma course in journalism. It was as if Alhaji Jose was preparing me early for something big in journalism.  When people say that I didn’t go to the university, I wonder if someone who attended these institutions and attended Harvard University for a postgraduate course, is not educated in their sight. What did they do that I have not done?  To have been qualified as Niemen fellow is one of the greatest honours in America because the fellowship is limited to 15 people annually and I did a year postgraduate course in Harvard University.

But Areoye Oyebola has said severally that Jose liked you more than him.

They said I was Alhaji Jose’s lapdog. That was why I decided to go to Herald after the crisis in Daily Times to prove myself. If I was that lapdog or favourite, who didn’t know the job, how come the paper succeeded? Without being immodest, there is no newspaper I managed that I ever collected subvention from the Federal Government. I made profit in Herald and turned around Sketch when I started managing it.  At Sketch, I built a new office complex, and bought new equipment. By the time I came back to Daily Times, the National Party of Nigeria (NPN) had destroyed it but I turned it around to the extent that we were paying dividends to shareholders. Would a man, who didn’t know his left from right and who they said became editor by favouritism, have been able to lead Daily Times? I am proud to say that I am one journalist in Nigeria who managed three major newspapers and made them profitable. I paid salaries as and when due and provided housing and car loans. Apart from managing three successful newspapers, I am involved in The Vanguard and The Guardian, which are major newspapers. When people talk, they don’t know that the idea of starting The Guardian was Alex Ibru’s and mine. That was why the managing directorship was reserved for me for years.

Your foray into politics, when was it?

My foray into politics began when I became a member of the Peoples Solidarity Party (PSP), which metamorphosed into the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

Would you now say that a two-party system is better than a multi-party arrangement?

A two-party system is the best for Nigeria. That is why I said the mistake Babangida made on June 12 was destroying the political engineering that was put in place by Dr Joseph Cookey. The two-party system placed the progressives on one side and the conservatives on the other.  At that time, nobody defected from SDP to the National Republican Convention (NRC) or from the NRC to the SDP. Nobody did that no matter the problem in the respective parties because the ideological divide was very clear.  For example, Senator Kofo Akerele-Bucknor became a senator with two votes. The primary that was used then was the Open Ballot system, where people queued behind the candidates of their choice to vote. What happened was that the late Wahab Dosumu was in the forefront to win but there was a disagreement, which made them to boycott the primary. Akerele-Bucknor stubbornly said she was not going to boycott and only two people queued behind her and she won because the SDP said they were boycotting. Her two votes were upheld and she became a senator. In spite of that, neither Dosumu nor the other person left the party.  The party still accepted her despite the fact that she was not the first choice. If we had gone with the two-party system, Nigeria would have been a better country today. There was only a little difference between the number of the SDP and the NRC governors. It was also the same in the Senate. Those who became governors at the time were high-calibre people. John Odigie-Oyegun, Dr Chukwuemeka Ezeife and Alhaji Saidu Bada from Katsina were all retired federal permanent secretaries. The late Dabo Lere of Kaduna State was a retired General Manager, Essential Commodities. Shaaba Lafiagi of Kwara State was the General Manager of Bacita Sugar Industry. I was the Managing Director of Daily Times.  Michael Otedola was a Personal Assistant to Awolowo. Bamidele Olumilua had a successful foreign aervice career. I can go on to name other governors, who were people of high calibre exposure. It is different from what we have now.

You once said that you grew up with top military leaders of old. Since you were close to them when they were in leadership positions as young people, how do you feel hearing their names often mentioned anytime Nigeria’s leadership crisis is discussed?

Of course, the military was in control for many years. Two weeks ago, someone said that I was a security agent during the military era. What they don’t know is that many of those officers were Second Lieutenants when I became famous as a result of the Balewa story in 1966.  I met some of them in 1961 when I went to Cameroon for Man’O War drills. I always tell them that they are Generals in the military while I am a Field Marshal in my profession. These are people who I grew up with. Babangida was one of them. The greatest “terror” in our days was Air Marshal Abass. That was when we used to visit nightclubs all over Lagos. How can I now be an agent of the people I grew up with? Is it not insulting?

For instance Babangida and I had interesting social life in Lagos as young people. For instance, on the war front, Gen T Y Danjuma (retd) was a Major serving under the late Gen Shuwa at the First Division, which was the first military formation to start the war. I met all of them on the war front. Danjuma was then a field Lt Colonel, can the man I met in the war front intimidate me? I had ‘hobnobbed’ with Tafawa Balewa, Adeniran Ogunsanya, Festus Okotie-Eboh and others in the parliament, how could my mates intimidate me? I covered the Sardauna of Sokoto and Awolowo, as well as moved with other high profile people. Those who called me an agent are limited in scope; they lack contacts and they are envious that I had contacts and influence. As of 1964, I had a telephone, which made it possible for me to relate with ministers and other top people. Wikileaks have been releasing names of agents, have they ever found my name on the Wikileaks list? As the officers were growing in the military, I was also growing in my profession. I couldn’t have been an apologist and still ran successful newspaper businesses.

With these explanations, are you dismissing the insinuation that you are a military apologist?

If I were a military apologist, would I have been able to run newspapers under the military regimes and made profits? It means that what I was giving out was acceptable to the readers. I replied them in my book. For instance, every newspaper has its editorial policy and all staff in the paper must lean in the direction of that policy otherwise you leave. There is no newspaper that is totally free. The freedom of any reporter stops where the editorial policy of the paper starts. Those saying that we that ran newspaper under the military regime are military apologists don’t know anything. I think I deserve some respect from those tagging me as a military apologist because of the achievements I recorded in all the newspapers I managed under the military without collecting subventions from governments. We walked on a tight rope under the military governments and still made the newspaper profitable.
