Presidential poll: Armed bandits attack Atiku’s witnesses

Buhari, Garba and Atiku tribunal

Armed bandits on Friday attacked witnesses of the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the February 23, 2019 general elections, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar on their way from Zamfara State to give evidence at the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal (PEPT), sitting in Abuja.

The witnesses were said to have been ambushed on the high way and violently attacked, an incident that cut short their journey to Abuja to give evidence in Atiku, PDP’s petition.

Lead counsel to Atiku and his party, the PDP, Dr. Livy Uzoukwu (SAN), who broke the news to the Tribunal headed by Justice Mohammed Garba disclosed that the witnesses made several phone calls to him on their ordeal.

The information on the attack came after eight witnesses had testified for Atiku and the PDP to the effect that election results were transmitted into the server of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) with the use of short code and smart card readers.

Atiku’s counsel, thereafter pleaded with the Tribunal to shift further hearing in the petition till Monday to enable the petitioners reach out to the attacked witnesses.

The tribunal chairman, who sympathised with the witnesses fixed Monday, July 15, for continuation of hearing in the petition in which Atiku is praying for the cancellation of the election that produced President Muhammadu Buhari on the ground of irregularities, malpractices and non qualification  of the president to have contested the election.

Earlier, one of the witnesses and an adhoc staff of INEC, Olufemi Ogunrinde told the tribunal that he personally transmitted election results into the server of the electoral body, along with other assistant presiding officers.

The witness admitted that two hours to the election, INEC brought in a consultant who trained them on how to transmit election results into INEC server with the provided short code and smart card reader.

Answering a question from counsel to INEC, Yunus Usman (SAN), the witness also admitted that he was given guidelines and regulations for the conduct of the election by INEC during their training.

Another witness, Peter Sabo from Yobe State alleged that the APC used the security challenges in the state to perpetrate electoral fraud.

He alleged that designated centers were used after mobilising voters, contrary to the regulation that voting must be done at the polling units.

Sabo further alleged that he refused to sign result sheets when he discovered that the number of ballot papers issued out by INEC was exactly the number of votes cast for APC, without any being void, adding that information latter came on how APC agents freely distributed ballot papers for voters after PDP agents had been chased away.

The witness told the Tribunal that he wrote a petition to the DSS, Police and Civil Defence for the arrest of the identified APC agents that carried out the election malpractices, but that nothing was done till date.

Another witness, Hassam Maisarauta, also from Yobe testified and alleged that civil servants in the state were harassed, intimidated and threatened to either vote for APC or lose their jobs.

The witness who named some government officials who carried out the threat further informed the chairman that farmers were harrassed to chose between voting for APC or forego their farm lands.

Cross examined by counsel to President Buhari, Yusuf Ali (SAN), the witness could not tell the Tribunal the number of farmers threatened by government officials but further alleged that vote buying was order of the day during the election.

Other witnesses who testified yesterday for the petitioners are, Husseini Haruna, Zakari Ibrahim, Silas Paris, Usman Adamu and Modu Ahmed.

Meanwhile further hearing in the petition to resume on Monday.

Educational Qualifications: Appeal Court Clears Buhari

The Court of Appeal, on Friday, dismissed a suit filed against President Muhammadu Buhari, challenging his suitability to contest the 2019 presidential election on account of his educational qualifications. A three-member panel of the Court of Appeal presided over by Justice Atinuke Akomolafe-Wilson, on Monday, July 8, reserved judgment in the suit after listening to the argument canvassed by counsel to parties in the matter. Kalu Kalu, Labaran Ismail and Hassy El-Kuris had approached the appellate court to nullify and set aside the judgment of the Federal High Court. The trial court declined to hear their suit instituted to challenge the educational qualification of President Buhari before the conduct of the 2019 general election. The appellants, in their appeal, are asking the appellate court to reverse the judgment of Justice Ahmed Mohammed on the grounds that the processes filed by Buhari and used to strike out their suit were not competent. They faulted the judgment of the lower court, which was predicated on the grounds that the suit was statute barred. The appellants claimed that the Federal High Court erred in law and in its decision that they did not challenge the primary election that produced Buhari as candidate of the APC. They, therefore, urged the Court of Appeal to assume jurisdiction over the suit and grant all the reliefs sought at the Federal High Court but which were refused. Among the reliefs was a declaration that Buhari submitted false information regarding his qualification and certificate to INEC for the purpose of contesting election into the office of the President of Nigeria and that he should be disqualified. They also prayed for an order of court directing INEC to remove Buhari’s name as a candidate of the APC. They equally urged the court to grant another order restraining Buhari from parading himself as a candidate in the 2019 presidential election and also APC from recognising Buhari as a candidate. It will be recalled that the Federal High Court had, on May 2, declined to grant the request of the appellants on the grounds that the suit was not filed within the time allowed by law and, therefore, sustained the preliminary objection raised by Buhari at the hearing. But not satisfied, the appellants asked the Court of Appeal to grant their reliefs because they were not challenging the primary election of the APC as erroneously held by the lower court. According to them, they were challenging the qualification of Buhari to stand for the presidential election without tendering his educational certificates as required by law.

Olumakaiye At 50: Not Yet Time To Take Life Easy- Okoh

“At 50, you cannot afford to take it easy yet. Because if you take it easy at this age, the Church will collapse.”

The above charge was given by His Grace, the Most Revd Nicholas Okoh while delivering the sermon at a special service marking the Golden Age birthday of the Diocesan Bishop of Lagos, Anglican Communion on Friday, July 12, 2019.

Spurring the celebrant into more inspiring spirit-filled actions aimed at de-populating the devil’s fold to gain more souls to the Kingdom of God, Okoh insisted that the challenges associated with the responsibilities vested on a true Minister of God were too enormous to be handled with levity.

According to Okoh, a minister of God who is committed to success cannot begin to take life easy until he attains the age of 70.

Meanwhile, with apt allusions to Biblical texts, the preacher has assured of the continued presence of God and ever refreshing divine vigour with Olumakaiye in all his days in God’s vineyard.

Okoh, however, cautioned the “Birthday Bishop” to remain firm and fervent, avoiding sin, which, Okoh noted, drives God away from man.

” The same God that told Jeremiah not to fear and assured that He was ever with him is also ever there for you.

“In this Ministry, it is not over until it is over and it is only over when we are dead.

“The Lord has promised to be with you to the end of the world.

“So, you don’t need any further assurance so far you are not in sin because sin drives away God; otherwise, the presence of God is guaranteed at all times”. Okoh posited.

In his closing response, Olumakaiye promised to remain propelled for more committed work in God’s service with the energising tonic in Okoh’s sermon, even as the celebrant jovially warned that henceforth, nobody should advise him to take it easy again until he clocked the age of 70.

Among dignitaries that graced the birthday service were Governors Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Oluwarotimi Akeredolu of Lagos and Ondo States respectively.

How I became close with Bola Tinubu through Bola Ige —Joe Igbokwe

Tribune Online
How I became close with Bola Tinubu through Bola Ige —Joe Igbokwe

igbo

You have been at the vanguard of the clamour for Igbo presidency in 2023. How would you justify this cause?

Since the end of the Civil War and the inception of Nigeria, an Igbo man has not been president of this country. Zik [Nnamdi Azikiwe] was a ceremonial president. The prime minister was the man in charge, because we were running a parliamentary system, the British system. So, Zik was just a ceremonial president. There was no executive power; the power was with the prime minister.

Then there was the Civil War in which millions died. I was a victim of that war because I didn’t go to school at that period. All schools – primary and secondary – were taken over by refugees. There was no school for us. I was in elementary five in 1966 and then the war ended in 1970, when I went back to elementary five. I lost those years. 1970 to now is almost 50 years and an Igbo man has never been president of this country.

And that is just the reason why you are clamouring for the position?

I have not finished. We have six zones in this country. The South-East is with fewer states. It is the only zone with five states. The North-West has seven, North-East, six; North-Central, six; South-West, six and South-South, six. It is only South-East that has five and if they are sharing anything in this country, the South-East will be the last. They have five governors, five speakers, while others have six each. If they are sharing revenue or enrolling people into the army, police, air force, government agencies, if it is by quota system that every state is going to contribute six or seven each, our own is going to be seven multiplied by five, while others would be more. It is the same in the distribution of local governments, we have the least. It is the same with revenue allocation… with almost everything. It is the least in everything in this country. That is why we would need one or two more states to prop us up. We are being excluded.

If I post anything on Facebook promoting my Nigerianness, before you know it, they start to abuse me. Others have three times six, 18, senators in their zone, whereas we only have 15. Concerning the number of the House of Representatives members, we are the least, ditto House of Assembly members, and when you talk about the number of speakers, we have the least.

Now, where would I start? It is a structural marginalisation. It is even a syndrome which we are trying to bring to the fore. I have written so much about an additional state in the South-East to make it six. That will help. The moment that is done, you would have created almost 60,000 jobs. If you do that, then you take off and develop the state almost immediately.

So, we are talking of Igbo presidency and I just gave a background. If you look at it from 1999, [Olusegun] Obasanjo came there. He wouldn’t have but Abiola won election in 1993 and was denied and that was why they zoned the presidency to the South-West and it became an Obasanjo/Olu Falae affair. Even though the South-West had wanted Falae to win the election, Obasanjo became president. After him, [Umaru] Yar’Adua came, followed by [Goodluck] Jonathan, who completed the remaining two years of Yar’Adua and then spent another four years. Then he tried if he could spend another four years, but we refused. Then the presidency went back to the North and by the grace of God, they are going to do their eight years.

Then when is it going to come down to South and where will it go? I am asking: where will it go? Is it to come back to the South-West which had already produced the president? I know my leader [Senator Bola Tinubu] is interested. That is, I don’t even want to talk about it. By 2023, Professor Osinbajo would have spent eight years as vice-president. So, if the thing comes to the South, we are asking all the political parties to field Igbo candidates, all of them, in order to heal the wounds of the Civil War. For the sake of national unity, that is all I want. So, we are saying that the APC, the PDP and all other parties, put Igbo as your presidential candidates to heal the wounds. I am one of the die-hard APC persons. Even if you have one person belonging to the APC from the South-East, it is enough. Don’t underrate the power of one. If they remove one from one billion, it will not be one billion again. One vote is the reason why America is speaking English today and not French. But I know that I am not the only person in the APC; we have thousands, if not millions, in the APC in the South-East. So, there is a reason. I want you to capture this.

We are a vibrant ethnic group that travels, traverses the whole world for greener pasture. We are all over Nigeria and that is why we suffer what is called demographic distortion, in the sense that nobody is at home. How many leaders of Igbo are registered in Lagos? They are here. They stay more in Lagos than home.

So, looking at all these things I have told you, don’t you think we deserve to produce the president of Nigeria for the sake of peace and to give the Igbo a sense of belonging, to tell them that they are part and parcel of this country? This is because we are feeling left out. Looking at the statistics I have given you, we are feeling left out. If you wake up in the morning and one of your five or six wives is complaining, crying, you have to settle the matter before you leave home. Now for the sake of national unity, the Igbo are not strangers in Nigeria. I can also go further to tell you that there is no place Igbo language is spoken as an indigenous language all over the world. They are not indigenous anywhere in the world except here in Nigeria, unlike Hausa or Yoruba? This [Nigeria] is our home. We don’t have any other place to go. I am not saying all this because I am Igbo.

In what way do you think the Igbo have contributed to the situation that they are in now?

I wrote a book titled ‘Igbo: 25 Years after Biafra’ in 1995 and captured in there what you call marginalisation. These things that I narrated to you now, structural marginalisation and systemic marginalisation, are systemic. In that book, I tell my people that when you suffer marginalisation from the state, why do you also marginalise yourselves? My people have not played better politics. We have not paid serious attention to the struggle for political power, because I have realised that politics is superior to economics. At least, Professor Laski (Harold) of the London School of Economics has settled that beyond any doubt that if you don’t get your politics right, your economy would not thrive. The Igbo have not played better politics since the end of the Civil War. Since the war ended, they didn’t ask questions, they didn’t do anything; they just picked up their bags and went back to business.

The state of Israel, it took [Adolf] Hitler to teach them that politics is very important. Hitler killed six million Jews to let them know that politics is superior and that opened their eyes. They were into business making money. They were not interested in the struggle for political power, because they didn’t know politics is superior to the economy. If you don’t have a stable polity, your economy would not thrive. He who seizes political power controls the army, controls the police, controls the air force… controls everything.

After the Hitler holocaust, the Jews didn’t go to sleep again. Today, you cannot be president of the United States of America unless you appease the Jews. They are very small. You might have to listen to them to know what they are saying, where their interest lies and they would be interested in who is going to emerge, whether he is going to fight for them. They wouldn’t want a repeat of what happened to them during the holocaust, because that was the price they paid for not playing better politics.

I will cite an example. When Yar’Adua died in 2009, Jonathan was to complete those two years left and go and let the North fill their quota. Jonathan did not go. They voted him in 2011 and in 2015, he wanted to rule again. We told our people that he was not going to win that election. If he won that election, it meant he was going to serve as president for 10 years and if you add it to Obasanjo’s eight years, that would be 18 years. The North would not agree to that. Already, there was a distortion of power sharing arrangement of 1998 by Jonathan because he was looking at 10 years if he had won the 2015 election. That would have been 18 years if that were to be added to Obasanjo’s eight years. So, he messed up the power sharing formula. That put us in trouble but thank God, we have put that behind us now.

The late Chief Sunny Okogwu, in one of the interviews he granted, concerning the possible clamour for Igbo presidency, said that after Jonathan, if such clamour should happen at all, the Igbo would be reminded that their slot had been used by Jonathan. Do you agree that Goodluck Jonathan is Igbo?

No, they gave him an Igbo name.

Is Jonathan an Igbo man?

No, he is an Ijaw man; they just gave him an Igbo name. They just gave him that name, Azikiwe overnight. This is part of the problem we are talking about. They gave him that name ‘Azikiwe’ just to say that he is an Igbo son and they are complaining they have not ruled.

To what extent have you been able to rally your people ahead of 2023? What moves are currently being made? What I am saying is that what plan do you have on the ground currently to achieve this objective?

They met in Ebonyi a few days ago, I mean the Igbo leaders, to position themselves. It won’t stop there; they will take trips to the South-West and the South-South to go and lobby. The issue of power is not a tea party. Power is not served a la carte; you have to struggle for it. They have to make peace. They have to visit the South-West. They have to visit the South-South and meet their leaders and convince them on why they have to withdraw their candidates for their own. And if I am part of that delegation, you know what? I will put an argument on the table that would prick their conscience, even though we have not yet played that politics.

If the position does not come to the Igbo in 2023, what would happen?

I can’t say. Maybe they would continue to agitate for Biafra, because they would see that they cannot get anything out of Nigeria. But my take is that you have to work for something before you can get it. They have not worked sufficiently; they have not played better politics; they have been playing divisive politics, ethnic politics. Nigeria should consider them.

I alluded to what happened in June 1993; how Abiola won the election and how he was denied victory and mainly the people who fought to annul the election were from the North. Abiola was killed while pursuing the mandate, did Yoruba go to war? At the time of the struggle, many Yoruba leaders were jailed. Some of them went on exile. They [the Yoruba] won in 1999 because there was nothing they (those who denied Abiola) could do other than to heal the wounds and ask the Yoruba to come back to the union because they were dangling the Yoruba Republic because one of them won an election, you killed him, killed his wife, destroyed his businesses. That was why they did what they did in 1999 to assuage the feelings and give them pat on the back in order to heal the wounds.

Nigeria has become virtually borderless and nearly everybody has contributed to building this nation up to where it is today. Where will you start, where will you begin? The Biafra you are looking for, you don’t know whether there will be power struggle among Ebonyi, Anambra, Enugu, Abia and Imo states when you get there. That is as regards who is going to be president and who becomes what? The moment you create that, border issue would start and brothers would be fighting each other. There would be serious struggle for power.

Right now, we are talking of high-level insecurity. What is your view on the security situation in the country?

It was there before Buhari came into office. Before winning and after winning the election, the thing escalated. It is not normal. Some people want to get back at the president. Some people are creating this problem.

When you talk about kidnapping, they are doing that to make money. These are people who don’t want to work. That should tell you that they want to make money. The other day, somebody said in a newspaper report that in six months, they made N200 million from kidnapping. If you give one of them job to do, and you pay him N200,000 a month, you think he would take the job? All this should tell you that they are not ready to work; they are into crime to make money.

But don’t you think the government shares in the blame?

How?

Kidnapping and banditry are crimes and the one who has the authority and capacity to punish such abnormalities is the government.

I am not saying that the government is not without any blame. That is why government is in place. I am not exonerating the government but I am telling you that some of them [security problems] are man-made, to create maximum crisis, to create maximum insecurity to get at the president. So, you cannot just overlook what is going on; you have to deal with it.

Are you saying that the government is not applying enough will to tackling the problem?

I know that the government is working hard. Before they came to Abuja, these bandits, the Boko Haram people came and bombed police barracks, the United Nations headquarters and so many other places. Since Buhari took over, they have not come to Abuja. They now go to small towns and villages to cause havoc and burn down houses. We also have these thieves called cattle rustlers doing their own thing. But they [the government] have to deal with them.

Do you see the government doing that?

Yes, so many things are coming to the table. The governors are saying that they can handle the situation but they need local police to do that. If you say a governor is the number one security officer in his state, you have to give him the tools to work with so that he can recruit from among his people. That is the reason why they are calling for state police. At a meeting of the South-West governors recently, that is what they were saying: ‘Yes, we will take responsibility but give us state police. So, they are asking for state police because right now, the governors have no control over the federal police. The commissioners of police would not listen to the governors; they take orders from Abuja.

But people are looking at the abuse that could come with it.

I think we need to do away with that. The damage is too much. We need to close our eyes and allow the governors to have this state police. Let’s see what is going to happen. If they abuse it, we will know. Make the law in such a way that it will not be abused.

Senator Bola Tinubu is your leader, about whom you talk with so much reverence. Who is the Bola Tinubu that you know?

You see, the man is a hunter of talents. He hunted me down 27 years ago in the days of locusts, when the country was in crisis. That was when we got to know each other.

I was with Bola Ige then. I used to go to his house in Ibadan. It was Bola Ige that I first got close to. He was the AD leader. He was in the APP before he went on to form the AD. I always went to his house in Ibadan and when I launched my first book in 1995, he was there. That was the peak of the crisis. He was there, Kudirat Abiola was there. In fact, he was the chairman of the book launch. Many other Yoruba leaders were also there. In 1995, the struggle started. I was writing and speaking. Since then, I have not changed. He [Tinubu] got me and he nurtured me. He trained me and launched me into the system. I was in my office in Alausa when he said I must be the publicity secretary of the party in the state. He told them that anybody could stand for all other posts but let nobody go near the publicity secretary office except Joe Igbokwe.

Here is a man others would say they want to be like but can you do what he has done? Can you spend your time and energy and money on people? Can you raise people? Can you train people? Can you put people in the system? Do you care? He cares. He is dependable. He can be trusted. He knows where he is going. If he says he is going to do something, he would not fail. He does not underrate his enemies. If his enemy is raising 1,000 soldiers, he would raise 50,000.

Asiwaju applies what psychologists call the “empty forte strategy”, the principle of reverse psychology, to win battles against his enemies. Let me describe Asiwaju for you in one sentence. It is difficult to see people anywhere in the country saying something against Asiwaju and you will not find one person that has benefitted from Asiwaju from among those in such a gathering that would not come and tell him about it. In any profession, in any setting, you find people sitting, whether in Sokoto, whether in Rivers, whether in Anambra, whether in Ebony, whether in Adamawa, discussing something negative about Asiwaju, somebody would not take his phone outside that place and call him to say see what they are saying about you o, baba! Somebody that has benefitted from him. The man traverses all of the states of the federation like a colossus. He works when others are asleep. Tell me, who else in this country has built the kind of political network Asiwaju has built over the years? Let me know. He has many followers. He trains people and his products include [former Governor] Ambode, [former Governor Babatunde] Fashola, [Biodun] Faleke and Governor Sanwo-Olu. Where will you start to count them? He is a strategist, a leader par excellence and a wonderful giver. He gives unexpectedly – when you don’t even ask for it. And if you betray him, he would forgive you tomorrow. If you come back, he would forgive you, saying, ‘He is my son. What do you want me to do with him? Do you see how he crushed Lagos PDP? Who is remaining there?

The next battle that has started is Afenifere 1 and Afenifere 2. Which one? Let me see how they are going to battle with Asiwaju with all the tentacles he has.

You met Bola Ige before you met Tinubu…

You see, after the primary of the AD in 1999, because it was a battle between Olu Falae and Bola Ige in the AD, they tilted towards Falae. The party ticket was given to him, and there was tension in the South-West, many leaders were not happy, many people were also not happy. They were not because they knew he would have been too strong to handle, too hot to handle, that was why they rooted for Olu Falae.

Then after the primary, he invited me to his house in Ibadan. That was on January 29, 1999. That time, Asiwaju and others had been elected governors, so they came. I was the only Igbo man, with my wife. People had thought Bola Ige would pick the party’s ticket. He didn’t know why he was denied the ticket because Olu Falae was not so much in the struggle; he went to serve Babangida now. In fact, the military governor in Oyo State arrested them [Bola Ige and others] and called them prisoners of war. So, after all this, he felt betrayed and that was why Obasanjo asked him to come and serve. The rest is now history.

But at that meeting in his house on January 29, he singled me out and told those governors that ‘if there is anything you are sharing in the South-West, take Joe Igbokwe as one of you’. That’s what he told them. He took the microphone, called me and my wife out and said in Igbo language, ndibayin (take this man and his wife as one of you). That is what he told them. And that was what brought me close to Asiwaju because I was based in Lagos.

What have you been up to lately?

I have been making utmost effort through the help of the Almighty in promoting and projecting the vision of Afrocentric Rhythms Concert for sustainability and growth. However, we are grateful to God for the success we have achieved so far, but we are still expectant for more open doors in achieving our goal. We are not relenting and are confident that we will get there in due time.

Following the success story of Afrocentric Rhythms Concert, which has been rated among the events that promote arts and culture, could you let us know how you conceived the idea?

AR Concert started like a dream, precisely on August 20, 2017 at the mother venue of the concert, Freedom Park, Lagos Island. I got the idea and I shared it with my wife and I approached my boss, Mr Theo Lawson of Freedom Park, because he always gives support to any idea that is good, especially in arts and entertainment. We had the first edition successfully, thereafter, Freedom Park gave in more interest on AR Concert and today, we are still surviving. The success behind it is that our audience keeps growing and it gain more fans. In the success story of Afrocentric Rhythms Concert, I have to appreciate my wife, Bukola and my team: Victor, Lucia, Frank, Gbenga PR and Emmanuel for making Afrocentric Rhythms Concert a success and widely accepted.

What are major challenges in the industry?

It has been very challenging to survive with a new brand in the music industry, but for the vision behind it, I and my team have been able to keep the spirit high till we break even. Some of the challenges is finding it difficult to get brands to support the initiative, but we have been able to survive through the divine grace. This is an initiative created to foster how enriched culture and art, so, it is not a wasted effort to collectively contribute such initiatives, especially when it contributes to the growth of the industry.

Do you think this initiative is achieving its purpose?

Yes, the inspiration came as a result of promoting and projecting African live music and talented musicians. My aim wasn’t to promote and project talented musicians only, but to revive old musicians that were once stars and no longer in existence. This vision is not only for talented Nigerian musicians, but for all African talented musicians.

Since you seem not to be performing what is termed commercial music, how do you make your music lucrative?

Commercial music is the music that makes hit from street to street globally. Making my music lucrative is to play good music and have right ways of promoting the music. My performance is on a regular basis now with my band. There’s no month I don’t have engagement.

What has been the most memorable moment in your musical career?

One of my memorable moments was when I was with Praiz, who beckoned on me to put up a band for him in 2015 and when I had the privileged to perform at the popular MTN Project Fame 2013.

What is your assessment of the industry?

Music industry is growing fast and more talents get discovered likewise. The only thing we need to do is to take some right directions at the right time in order to take the industry to a greater height.

For me, I don’t condemn songs, because I believe that it is only good music and its originator that will stand the test of time, as well as be evergreen, while immoral music will go into extinction.

We hardly have people adopting this brand of music, why did you develop interest in it?

I do all genres of music due to the reason of my foundation musically. I believe in rhythms and I make good sounds out of it. It is true we hardly have popular trombonist in our society, but I work hard to make myself the first among the best professional trombonist in Nigeria through the help of God. I always feel good and proud of being a trombonist and it takes nothing than working consistently to be the toast of many in the industry.

As one of the conventional musicians in the country, do you see artistes of the category as being underrated in the industry?

Obviously, this category don’t have the supports needed as other Afro pop musicians benefit a lot in the industry, this is because of the settings system and we only strive and make all efforts to get the stage we are or we are aiming at. I am hopeful that we get the needed support to foster our specialisation in the industry. It is time we realised the need to embrace our culture; Africanness through musical works. This is the only way to restore our society and force our leaders to retrace their steps to the right track. Music is not just about entertaining, but it redirects and impact lives positively. This can only be achieved through my kind of music because it is a combination of inspiring rhythms and inculcate good values.

There is a claim that trombonist often suffer critical health issues later in life. Do you have this fear?

It is not true. I was actually told same thing when I was about to start learning the musical instrument, but I had to prove those people wrong that there is nothing as such.

Did you ever have the premonition that you will end up to become a musician?

Music has always been my passion from my early age. In listening to music day and night in the early 90s and somehow I discovered myself on local drums (agbaa mole) in my parents church, Christ Apostolic Church. This discovery boosted my passion more for music and musical instruments. I became a professional on the local drums at that my early age. I never knew what trombone was then until I was introduced to it by my first teacher, a music maestro, Samuel Toyin Ajose and this brought about the good story today.

Though I am a graduate of Management Information Systems (B. Sc), USAM, Port Novo, Benin Republic, I also obtained music certificates from MUSON and Peter King College of Music, Badagry, Lagos and many other professional certificates. I’m the convener and executive producer of Afrocentric Rhythms Concert and the CEO of the Closette Media and Communications Ltd. I am also the band originator of Abinibi Groovy and band administrator of Eko Brass Band. My life as a trombonist has been interesting. Though life is two sides of a coin; the good and the bad, anyway whatever life throws at me, even at the verge of excelling in my career, I will always remain humble and never to give up on life and my passion. One of the things that made me unique in the industry is the ability to make good music and the level of training and experience I have garnered and will continue to seek for.

My ability to relate with diverse audience paved way for me as an influencer — Adekeye, CEO, Estol media

social

Marketing and Branding is a specialisation that has moved from the mainstream space to social space ruled by the male folks. How were you able to carve a niche for yourself as a woman in the midst men?

I just recently put out an article on personal branding and in it, I talked about understanding your personality. From the start, I knew what I stood for and what I wanted to represent so I did not need to be in a competition with anyone else. I just focused on doing and being the best version of myself, which paid off in the long run.

How do you feel being a major female contender as regards brand influence on the social space?

I feel highly honoured and this in itself is a major motivation to continue to be better at what I do. It keeps me on my toes and steady in finding ways to improve myself so I can help more brands achieve their goals and also deliver the best return on investment (ROI) for every client I come across.

Have you always thought of having the social media as work space growing up and how has it improved your standard of living?

Growing up, I always wanted to be a news caster with NTA. I loved Abike Dabiri, and thankfully I got admission into the University of Lagos to study Mass Communications. So being in the media space wasn’t an accident, I was going to evolve with time eventually, though sometimes I wish I started social media earlier than I did in 2009. In all, social media has been one of my main stay especially with my group of companies.

You won the MAYA award in 2018 as brand influencer of the year (Digital). How did you feel and what would you say you did differently to merit such?

I am one of the foremost social media influencers in Africa and perhaps the first female to set up an influencer marketing agency. So getting the award was just a cap on my endeavors so far. In 2018, Estol Africa worked on over 70 clients which of course meant higher frequency of activities on my timeline, so I believe that was one of the things that stood me out.

As an influencer, how were you able to keep up with the yearnings of your followers as well as meeting up with target?

Followers are highly underappreciated, because to be honest, without active followers, who then are you influencing? Your value lies in how you can influence a certain segment of people to do certain things they normally would not do; to buy certain products; to cause an attitudinal change or even to subscribe to a service because you said so. These followers are mini gods and keeping them engaged is a more difficult task than gathering the numbers. I study my audience from time to time, know what they like to be fed, and feed them. Treat them as friends and build a relationship with them.

You are popular among celebrities, how were you able to get such connection and swim through the tides of their many controversies without being caught in the web?

I have been a very focused young lady. I started my journey in the media in 2004 with Unilag Fm. I was also a writer for a campus magazine called Bif. As far back as 2005, I had started interviewing celebrities; I was also going for event coverages, so it was only natural for me to connect with celebrities. I was also a tomboy so I was able to relate with most artistes as their “GEE” so as to take their minds off any sexual thought about me. I was also mindful of my relationships with them. This was why at the time I started my PR company, it was easy for me to pitch myself because I hadn’t been entangled with any of them, neither did I have a bad record. In fact at the time I started radio, I used to request for upcoming artistes to bring demo CD of their songs, I will take time through the week to listen and play the good ones on my Saturday show, sometimes I even invite them for interviews.

As an influencer, how do you cope with the changing faces of the social space, taking note of some accounts owned by influencers that was blocked by Twitter?

Digital space is a fluid ecosystem with Innovation and new thoughts spurring up at the speed of a tweet. It becomes important for one be at alert and have experts that can help navigate through the tide. The owners of the platforms are in business and will do anything that makes business sense to them. So it’s important to maximize it when you can and always have a backup plan.

Apart from brand influence, what other projects are you into?

Aside from being a brand influencer, I am an occasional event compere, conference speaker, new media expert, and a talent business manager.

Where do you anticipate seeing yourself in five years time?

Although I like to take each day as it comes and as it is also good to dream, I do hope that in the next five years, no matter what social platforms are available then, my company Estol Props Media, would have increased in number with more problem-solving innovations, with more sub groups under its umbrella and Estol Africa which is already present in Nigeria, Ghana and Kenya with prospects in other markets.

What was the reaction of your parents to your adopting the social media as your workplace amidst controversies of cybercrime among youths?

My parents have always been used to having an ambitious, working daughter. They know my kind of job and are very in tune.  They are quite accommodating so they just let me flow in my creative space.

Would you say your gender paved way for you as an influencer, since it is a tradition for women to have more followers than their male counterparts?

I think it was more of me creating a stand for myself. My content is diverse and it cuts across both male and female, so I feel my ability to relate with a diverse audience is what paved way for me as an influencer. I totally disagree that gender has anything to do with number of followers, though, there’s a huge difference between the quality (value) of followers as opposed to quantity (numbers). Unlike so many others, I gathered a quality of followers from offline (radio) and together we all grew on my social pages, so it’s about the types of people that follow you and what they are following for. For instance, what are you offering them? Are you feeding them what they want to be fed? Are they engaging with your content? Are you engaging with them?

For me, social media is more than the numbers also, it’s about the actual influence in that space

How do you relax?

I love to dance and listen to music; I listen to music at every opportunity. So when I am not working, I am either on my social pages seeing what’s going on, listening to music or dancing. Strange as it may sound, I hate going out.

My husband tied down my fortune with padlock, made my business nose-dive through black soap, woman tells court

My husband tied down my fortune with padlock, made my business nose-dive through black soap, woman tells court

padlock

Oja Oba/Mapo Court C Customary Court, Mapo, Ibadan, Oyo State, has put an end to the 14-year-old relationship between a woman, Bose Bella and her husband, Adekola Bella.

Bose who dragged her husband to court accused him of battery. The plaintiff added that he was diabolic and in the habit of threatening him.

Bose prayed the court to dissolve their wedlock in order to save her life.

Adekola denied all the allegations brought against him by his wife and refused to admit to divorce. The defendant told the court he still love his wife.

The court president, Chief Ademola Odunade, after hearing the evidence of both parties stated that it was necessary that their union be dissolved since it involved threat to life.

Giving his judgment, Odunade dissolved their union and ordered the defendant to pay the plaintiff the sum of N3, 000 to pack her belongings from his house.

Both parties were advised to maintain peace.

“My lord, I appeal to this honourable court this day to dissolve my union to my husband. I don’t wish to stay under the same roof with him a minute longer, “Bose said.

“I have never met a man as irresponsible as my husband. He doesn’t love me and therefore shows no affection towards me. He treats me like a part of the furniture in the house.

“He complains and raises argument over trivial issues and will end up beating me. He will pounce on me and hit me with anything within his reach before descending on me with heavy blows. He will only be satisfied when he sees that I’m soaked in blood.

“I spend my meager income buying drugs and treating wounds as a result of his heavy beatings, “she added.

“Adekola is diabolic. He acts strange and on many occasions looks weird. This puts fear in me.

“Any time we fight, he will bring out different types of charms and threaten to run me mad.

“He gave me black soap to wash my hands and my business immediately nose-dived.

“My lord, he has a padlock he uses in tying down fortune. I discovered this padlock where he kept it and seized it. Here is the padlock. (She presented it before the court as evidence),  “Bose told the court.

She further told the court that, “He forces me to sign an agreement whenever he gives me money to run my business and will constantly hold me in bondage through this.

“My lord, it’s wise I leave my husband now before he makes a mess of my life. I’m packing my belongings out of his house today, “she concluded.

Adekola, giving his evidence, said:”My lord, I still love my wife and do care for her. I don’t know what else to do to satisfy her.

“I don’t agree that she divorces me.”

“I go out of my way to please and make her happy but she’s never appreciative of all that I do.

“I’m not diabolic as she stated and never gave her black soap to wash her hands.  She lied against me.

“She has failed to tell the court I always stand as her guarantor any time she borrows money. I wouldn’t have done that if I don’t love her.

“My lord, I know nothing about the padlock she brought before this honourable court. Her plan is to blackmail me, “Adekola told the court.

Ruling after he had heard both parties, the court president, Chief Ademola Odunade dissolved their union.

He was directed to pay the plaintiff the sum of N3, 000 to pack her belongings from his home.

Trump’s Labour Secretary Acosta Resigns Amid Epstein Case

Donald Trump, #SOTU

U.S. Labour Secretary Alexander Acosta resigned on Friday amid fresh scrutiny of his handling of the sex abuse case against financier Jeffrey Epstein, becoming President Donald Trump’s latest adviser to leave the administration in controversy.

Acosta, joining Trump at the White House before the president left for a trip to Wisconsin, said he did not want to be a distraction to the administration’s work because of his leadership of the Epstein case more than a decade ago.
“As I look forward, I do not think it is right and fair for this administration’s Labour Department to have Epstein as a focus rather than the incredible economy we have today,” Acosta said.
Trump, who has fired numerous cabinet and other administration officials during his 2 1/2 years in the White House, said it was Acosta’s idea to step down.

“Alex called me this morning and wanted to see me,” Trump told reporters. “I just want to let you know this is him, not me.”
Acosta’s resignation is effective in seven days. Trump named Deputy Labour Secretary Patrick Pizzella as the acting secretary of Labour.
Acosta has served in Trump’s cabinet since April 2017 and from 2005 through 2009 was the U.S. attorney for the Southern District of Florida. It was there that he handled Epstein’s first case involving sex with girls, which resulted in a punishment that critics say was far too lenient.
“Mr. Acosta now joins the sprawling parade of President Trump’s chosen advisors who have left the administration under clouds of scandal and corruption, leaving rudderless and discouraged agencies in their wake. Taxpayers deserve better,” Democratic U.S. Senator Sheldon Whitehouse said in a statement.

Epstein, a billionaire hedge fund manager, pleaded not guilty to new federal charges in New York this week. Epstein had a social circle that over the years has included Trump, former President Bill Clinton and Britain’s Prince Andrew.
Nancy Pelosi, the Democratic speaker of the House of Representatives, and Democratic Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer had called on Tuesday for Acosta to resign.

Acosta responded to the criticism on Tuesday with tweets saying Epstein’s crimes were “horrific” and that he was glad prosecutors were moving forward based on new evidence and testimony that could “more fully bring him to justice.”
On Wednesday Acosta held a news conference to defend his handling of the deal, which allowed Epstein to plead guilty to a state charge and not face federal prosecution. Acosta said Epstein would have had an even lighter sentence if not for the deal.

Acosta would not say if he would make the same decision regarding Epstein now, considering the power of the #MeToo movement that led to the downfall of several powerful men publicly accused of sex crimes by women.
U.S. prosecutors in New York on Monday accused Epstein, 66, of sex trafficking, luring dozens of girls, some as young as 14, to his luxury homes and coercing them into sex acts.
Democratic U.S. Representative Elijah Cummings, chair of the House Oversight and Reform Committee who has called on Acosta to testify on the Epstein matter, said in a statement: “Secretary Acosta’s role in approving the extremely favourable deal for Jeffrey Epstein raises significant concerns about his failure to respect the rights of the victims, many of whom were children when they were assaulted.”
The federal prosecutors in New York said they were not bound by the deal arranged by Acosta, which allowed Epstein to plead to a lesser offence and serve 13 months in jail with leave during the day while registering as a sex offender.
In February, a federal judge in West Palm Beach, Florida, ruled that the 2007 agreement violated the victims’ rights. Epstein’s case and Acosta’s role in the plea deal had come under scrutiny earlier this year after an investigation by the Miami Herald.

The Epstein case came up during Acosta’s Senate confirmation hearing but the Republican-majority Senate approved him in a 60-38 vote.

He is the latest top Trump administration official to depart under a cloud. The heads of the Interior, Justice, State and Health departments have also either been fired or resigned, among other top staff during Trump tenure so far.
Acosta, the son of Cuban refugees and the first Hispanic member of Trump’s Cabinet, previously served on the National Labour Relations Board and in the U.S. Department of Justice under Republican President George W. Bush.

Molinari To Plough Ryder Cup Energy In Open Title Defence

Francesco Molinari, defending champion hopes to harness some of the energy of a Northern Irish crowd celebrating the return of the Open after 68 years in much the same way he did at the Ryder Cup.

The Italian was the standout player at Le Golf National last September, triumphant in all five of his matches and securing the point which won back the trophy.

One of the quietest, most unassuming players on tour, Molinari admits playing to the gallery is something which is alien to him but he hopes being the last winner of the Claret Jug and a Ryder Cup hero will provide a reciprocal benefit when he arrives at Royal Portrush next week.

“It is going to be an historic Open Championship for many reasons, which is even more reason for me to go there and just try to enjoy the experience and use the energy of the crowd for the week,” he said.

“You just try to get a feel for the people and that is something I did well at the Ryder Cup – it is not something which is natural to me, recognising how much they appreciate my game.”

Conversely, however, Molinari is playing down the defence of his Claret Jug.

Wary of the amount of additional time is required from returning champion means the Italian has deliberately reduced his schedule in the weeks running up to the event.

Asked about the change, which has not seen him play since the Travelers Championship at the end of June Molinari said: “Recognising that going into a tournament as a defending champion is different and especially a major.

“I’m not going to play as much as I did last year, save as much energy as possible for the week.

“I think it is trying to keep the expectations down – it is a different experience to be there as defending champion, hopefully that is not the only time in my career when that happens.”

Molinari could have arrived in Portrush as a two-time major winner had things gone better for him at Augusta where he led the Masters going into the final day and was two clear with seven holes remaining only to collapse and hand victory to Tiger Woods.

It was a chastening experience for the likeable Italian, who found the water twice on the back nine.

“It was a very different situation when you are leading. I fought well on the front nine without having my A-game, then unfortunately just a couple of mistakes on the back nine,” he added.

R&A Ups Prize Money For Women’s British Open To $4.5m

Women’s British Open bosses have boosted prize money by almost 40 per cent for this year’s tournament.

The R&A has announced the increase to 4.5million US dollars (£3.6million) with AIG coming on board as title sponsor, with the winner taking home 675,000 US dollars (£539,000).

The Women’s British Open now offers the second-highest prize fund of the five majors in the women’s game, with this year’s edition hold at Woburn from August 1 to 4.

“We recognised that more needed to be done to elevate the prize fund for this great championship and are pleased that we have been able to make a significant increase this year as part of The R&A’s commitment to women’s golf,” said The R&A chief executive Martin Slumbers.

“This is an important first step and we know it will take time to move closer to achieving parity with the men’s game.

“We will continue to work toward the long-term goal of a sustainable business model but we can’t do it alone and the support of fans, sponsors and media are all key to achieving that success.”

Georgia Hall will defend her title against nine of the past 10 champions at the Woburn challenge, with AIG entering the first of a five-year sponsorship deal.

Ex-Liverpool Tottenham Striker Jokes He Could Join Chelsea Or Madrid

Crouch, 38, signed a short-term contract with the Clarets in January after spending seven years with Stoke, but is now a free agent ahead of the 2019/20 campaign, According to Talksport.com.

And the ex-England striker, speaking to talkSPORT, has admitted he is not yet sure whether he will hang up his boots – but joked he has texted Frank Lampard about a potential bid to play at Chelsea.

“I’ve been playing football for 23 years, day in, day out. But I am 38 years old now and 29 next year,” the former Spurs and Liverpool forward told Drivetime.

“I feel like I’ve had a really good innings. If it’s not to be with football this year, it’s not to be.

“But I still love the game and I will be in and around it, if not playing it this year.

“I enjoyed my football again at Burnley and who knows what the future is going to hold for me but I’m enjoying the time off at the moment.

“A lot depends on Gareth Bale and whether he leaves Real Madrid, as there will be a potential opening there! I’ve also texted Frank [Lampard] at Chelsea to let him know I’m available!”

Crouch also cast some light on his career at Stoke and the failures that led to the club getting relegated to the Championship.

The Potters were an established top-flight side under Mark Hughes, regularly finishing inside the top 10.

But it all came crashing down in the 2017/18 season when they were relegated to the Championship.

Crouch said: “Stoke is the prime example of where fans and people wanted a different brand of football. We finished ninth three seasons in a row in the Premier League.

“We were tough to beat. People were coming to the Bet365 Stadium and not wanting to be there. The cold wet windy night in Stoke on a Tuesday was a thing.

“We tried to change for the better. We started passing and got different players in.

“We lost an identity that was Stoke. If you look at it now I felt like every season we would lose a character and bring in the wrong type of character.

“With every character you lose, you lose something. At around Christmas time we were getting found out year in year out.

“We escaped a couple of times but if you keep doing that and trying to play attractive football and bringing in continental type players and it culminated in relegation.”
