FIFA bans Ghana's former football president for life

(FILES) In this file photo taken on June 23, 2014 President of The Ghana Football Association Kwesi Nyantakyi answers questions during a press conference in Maceio during the 2014 FIFA World Cup. An explosive documentary has rocked Ghana's football association, showing executives including the organisation's head allegedly proposing bribes worth millions of euros. Nyantakyi was caught suggesting lucrative deals to undercover journalists posing as "investors" in the film "Number 12", which was shown pn June 6, 2018 at a preview attended by diplomats and politicians in the capital Accra. / AFP PHOTO / Carl DE SOUZA

Ghana’s former football president Kwesi Nyantakyi has been banned by FIFA from football for life and ordered to pay a hefty fine after being found guilty of bribery and corruption.

FIFA’s ethics committee banned Nyantakyi “for life from all football-related activities (administrative, sports or any other) at both national and international level,” it said in a statement issued Tuesday.

The committee found Nyantakyi guilty of “conflicts of interest”, “bribery and corruption” and “commission” after being caught on camera accepting bribes.

Along with the ban, Nyantakyi faces a fine of CHF 500,000 ($496,000, 438,000 euros).

In June, a documentary by investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas was broadcast showing hidden camera footage of Ghanaian officials taking bribes, including Nyantakyi.

Nyantakyi was accused of requesting $11 million (9.3 million euros) to secure government contracts.

The revelations rocked Ghana, where football is the national sport and which prides itself as being a stable democracy in an often turbulent region.

In September, the Referees Association of Ghana said it had banned eight referees and assistant referees for life while 53 officials were subject to 10-year bans.

Football analysts have described corruption as a “curse” on African football.

On Tuesday, 10 youth players from Benin were jailed for one month each for lying about their age after they were kicked out of qualifying for next year’s under-17 Africa Cup of Nations finals.

At the same hearing, the former president of Benin’s football federation, Anjorin Moucharafou, was sentenced to two months in jail.

Dani Alves Trains With PSG Teammates Hopeful Of Return From Injury

Alves

Dani Alves trained with his Paris St-Germain (PSG) teammates for the first time in almost six months on Wednesday, French media said on Wednesday.

The training was the first step in the Brazilian defender’s efforts to return from a serious knee injury.

Alves damaged the cruciate ligament in his right knee during the French Cup final against Les Herbiers on May 8 and has not played since.

This had led to his missing the 2018 FIFA World Cup for Brazil and pre-season training with his club.

The 35-year-old former FC Barcelona and Juventus FC player began light training earlier this month but club officials did not put a date on his return to first-team action, L’Equipe reported.

Alves joined PSG in July 2017 on a free transfer.

Atiku to Buhari: Selling National Assets To Fund Budget Fiscally Irresponsible

Buhari,Atiku

Lagos – Presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has described as ‘fiscally irresponsible’ plans by the Muhammadu Buhari administration to sell national assets to fund the 2019 budget.

In a statement signed by Atiku Campaign Organisation on Wednesday in Abuja, Atiku said the action by the officials in the Buhari administration has the effect of ridiculing their principal.

He also said many of the assets the Buhari administration are planning to sell were built and established during the era of PDP and some are Atiku’s brain child.

“It will be recalled that on Monday the 29th of October, 2018, President Buhari accused past leaders of the People’s Democratic Party of not building public infrastructure, while delivering the 75th Anniversary Business lecture of the Island Club, Lagos.

“However, some of the assets listed for sale in the policy document of the Buhari Administration, were assets built or established under the PDP administrations that governed Nigeria between 1999 and 2007. Some of them were the brain child of the Presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar.

“Our question is this: If the PDP did not build infrastructure, as alleged by President Muhammadu Buhari, who built these assets that this administration wants to sell to fund their 2019 budget?

“As head of the Economic Management Committee during the Obasanjo administration, His Excellency, Atiku Abubakar, supervised the successful policy of privatisation. Privatisation works because it is a long-term strategy to engender efficiency in the economic system and expand the frontiers of private sector activity.

“Its primary goal is NOT to raise money for short term stabilization of what is clearly a fragile fiscal system.  The government’s planned sale of assets will cause long term pains and only provide short term gains.

“It makes no sense to sell public assets simply to fund a ‘business-as-usual’ budget that is essentially 70% recurrent. It is irresponsible to part with valuable assets simply to consume the proceeds (Like selling your family house to take a trip overseas on holiday).

“We knew that such a day would come, which is why His Excellency Atiku Abubakar has on various occasions made it clear that what is needed at this time is fundamentally fiscal restructuring to eliminate our addiction to oil revenues and strengthen our internal revenue generating capacity and a restructuring of the budget in favour of capital spending.

“For instance, last month, the PDP Presidential candidate questioned the wisdom behind the Federal Government sharing $322 million Abacha loot to certain Nigerians, only to obtain a $328 million loan from China, allegedly for ICT development.

“Rather than share that money, the Buhari administration ought to have put that $322 million in an escrow account to be used for funding the 2019 budget.

“Also, we recall that $43 million was found in an Ikoyi apartment. While we note the failed promise of the Buhari administration to come clean on who was behind those monies, we make bold to say that those funds should equally have been placed in escrow for use in funding the 2019 budget.

“It is a testament to our candidate that he helped build and develop national assets that are now so valuable that they can be sold. Creating more of such assets is at the core of his agenda to Get Nigeria Working Again.

“It is our hope that the Buhari government will accept this patriotic pro bono advise and retrace its step accordingly.

Why Kingsley Moghalu should be Nigeria’s next President in 2019 – Diasporan Group

We wholeheartedly endorse Professor Kingsley Moghalu for President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Moghalu understands and knows what will be required to address the complex issues in the 21st century including addressing the challenges facing Nigerians in the Diaspora.

This group comes from different Nigerian backgrounds of ethnicity, language and training. What we have in common is a yearning for Nigeria to fulfill her vast potential and take her place among the advanced democracies and economies, a prospect which has been denied her for nearly 60 years by poor leadership. In 2019, that can change. And that will change if Nigerians take advantage
of the 2019 election.

Properly examined, the 2019 election is less of an election and more of an opportunity. An opportunity for Nigerians, as a people, to choose to get it right. Nigeria’s dismal story will change if we accept the obvious: that failure does not convert to success the more we repeat the errors leading to it. In 2019, Nigeria can get it right by choosing NOT to make the same errors.

Nigerians must choose to vote with their eyes and minds wide open. An open mind is an intelligent mind. An intelligent mind
turns away from the errors that have yielded disappointment, failure and misery. This is why 2019 is an opportunity, one in which Nigerians, turning away from disappointment, seek a leader with the training, experience, patriotism and commitment to take their nation forward.

A leader who understands the world as it is, not as it is imagined to be. A leader who is not afraid to seek the most qualified and most prepared Nigerians to be deployed in the service of Nigeria. In Kingsley Moghalu, we are proud to identify such a man. Professor
Moghalu is a well-educated patriot, thinker, lawyer, economist and writer whose deepest desire is to bring Nigeria into line with
modern development thinking and growth.

At home in Nigeria, North, South, East, West, and abroad, Moghalu demonstrates his understanding of the challenge of advancing Nigeria through fearless economic thinking, robust political re-engineering, and strong administrative structures. Moghalu is different from most candidates because he has not emerged simply to run for office: his thorough
and clear thinking about Nigeria and his practical solutions are available in his books, writings, and interviews over the years. Moghalu
is clearly the most potent force for the advancement of Nigeria today, and an opportunity not to be missed. We wholeheartedly
endorse his candidature for the presidency of Nigeria in the 2019 election.

Signed:
Dr. Julius Kpaduwa, Charles E Orbih, Demola Okunsanya, Lami Dogonyaro, Dr. Alice Etim,

killing Of Maid Convicted Of Murder Spurs Protest

Indonesia has protested to Saudi Arabia over the execution of an Indonesian maid, convicted of murdering her employer who a workers’ rights group said was trying to rape her at the time.

President Joko Widodo said he called Saudi Arabia’s foreign minister, Adel al-Jubeir, to lodge a protest and demand to know why Indonesia had not been informed about the execution of the woman, Tuti Tursilawati.

“We have called Saudi Arabia’s foreign minister and conveyed our protest, Widodo was quoted as saying by the office of his cabinet secretary.

Tursilawati, who was working in the city of Ta’if, was found guilty of killing her employer in June 2011.

Indonesian advocacy group Migrant Care said in September that the mother of one had been defending herself from being raped.

The office of the cabinet secretary cited the Migrant Care assertion.

The Saudi ambassador to Indonesia had been summoned to discuss the matter, the president said.

The Saudi embassy in Jakarta did not answer calls seeking comment.

“The kingdom of Saudi Arabia has ignored principles of human rights, including a right for everyone to live, said Abidin Fikri, a member of Indonesia’s parliament.

Indonesia, which is the world’s biggest Muslim-majority country and generally enjoys good ties with Saudi Arabia, also has the death penalty for certain crimes.

Indonesia has asked Saudi Arabia several times to improve protection of its workers there, including this month when Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi met al-Jubeir in Jakarta.

Buhari has done much to secure lives of Nigerians, says APC Chieftain

5 economic problems in the HSBC report that the Nigerian government is yet to address

He said that religious leaders in the country owe the society the duty to mentor their followers on the need to obey constituted authorities no matter the level of provocation.

Mr Anthony Nwafor, the All Progressives Congress (APC) Nkanu East/West constituency candidate for House of Representatives, says President Muhammadu Buhari has done so much to ensure security of lives and property in the country.

Nwafor, who made this known when he reacted to pockets of protests by the Islamic Movement of Nigeria, said in a statement on Wednesday that Buhari should be encouraged to maintain the good works of maintaining peace in the country.

According to him, the only way Nigerian will encourage Mr President is by being law abiding.

He said that religious leaders in the country owe the society the duty to mentor their followers on the need to obey constituted authorities no matter the level of provocation.

“This is the only way the values they teach them can be said to reflect in their daily lives.

“Getting too obsessed with religious loyalty breeds extremism which is what the world is gripped with today, Nwafor said.

He advised the Federal Government to review the continued detention of the leader of the group, Ibrahim El-Zakzaky, after several court orders.

He also urged the members of the group not to take laws into their hands because their leader was in detention.

Nwafor further urged the sect to stop confronting the Nigerian Army under any guise so that more lives would not be lost.

“The number of lives lost on daily basis to the confrontation between the group and the Nigeria Army is not necessary as the development can be avoided.

“Women, children and youths are made to march on the streets of Abuja to protest, thereby exposing them to the dangers associated with this confrontation with the military.

“Every life is important. Nigerians should learn to present their grievances without creating further problems.

Shehu Sani backs labour over N30,000 minimum wage

A Senator representing Kaduna Central, Shehu Sani has declared support for labour unions in Nigeria over the N30,000 new minimum wage demand.

Sani, while urging state governors willing to pay N22,000 as new wage to add N8,000 to meet the demands of the workers said Nigeria’s economy can sustain the N30,000 minimum wage.

“NLC’s nationwide mass protest is commendable. Those who can pay 22k as minimum wage should just add 8k to make it 30k” Sani said on Twitter on Wednesday.

“Nigeria’s economy can sustain it. The struggle must continue,” he added.

This is coming after The Chairman of Governors Forum, Abdul’aziz Yari after a briefing from the forum’s representatives at the Tripartite Committee on Tuesday night said the governors agreed to pay a national minimum wage of N22,500.

Following the governors declaration, the union insisted it would take nothing less than N30,000 as new minimum wage and threatened to vote out any government that refuses to meet its demand.

It gave the ultimatum in a nationwide protest it held to reaffirm its position and warn Nigerians to stock up on food as the countdown to its planned November 6, 2018 strike nears zero.

The lawmaker, however, said he will add a “strong voice of solidarity” to the workers demand at the National Assembly.

The National Assembly is currently on recess with plenary scheduled to resume November 6th, 2018.
