Gerrard Reveals Fitness State Of Squad

Rangers take on Legia Warsaw this evening as we look to take a big step towards getting ourselves into the Europa League group stages.

We’re at the play-off round stage now and if we win this tie over two legs we will be once again in the draw for the real competition to kick off.

A big night awaits in the Polish capital awaits, then, and it looks as though Steven Gerrard has a pretty healthy squad from which to pick his team.

Speaking to the press yesterday he revealed that there are no fitness concerns for him to worry about and that the players are looking fresh:

SG: We have no fitness concerns. If we reach the level we did against Midtjylland, I have confidence we’ll find a breakthrough.

— Rangers Football Club (@RangersFC) August 21, 2019

The season has been going on a while for the Gers already thanks to European competition but tiredness should not be a problem with such a big couple of games on the way.

Stay in the tie and nick a goal tonight and I think we can do the job at Ibrox in the second match.

Italy’s PD Raises Bar For Possible Government With 5-Star

Refugee

Italy’s center-left Democratic Party on Thursday set tough new conditions for forming a coalition with the anti-establishment 5-Star Movement, making a deal between the traditional foes look more elusive and raising the chance of snap elections.

Leaders of Brothers of Italy party Luca Ciriani, Giorgia Meloni and Tommaso Foti meet with Italian President Sergio Mattarella for consultations in Rome, Italy, August 22, 2019. Paolo Giandotti/Presidential Palace/Handout via REUTERS
The euro zone’s third-largest economy is in political turmoil after its government, riven by months of infighting, collapsed this week, forcing Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte to resign just as Rome was to begin preparing the 2020 budget.

The collapse was triggered by the right-wing League party whose leader Matteo Salvini declared the ruling coalition dead two weeks ago, saying he could no longer work with 5-Star, his coalition partner.

Factbox: Hurdles in way of 5-Star/PD coalition government in Italy
Salvini, the interior minister, called for elections, aiming to cash in on his surging popularity to return to power as prime minister with a mandate to launch a big spending spree next year and challenge the European Union’s fiscal rules.

However his move could backfire because the head of state, Sergio Mattarella, will only dissolve parliament if no other coalition can be formed, and now 5-Star and the PD are looking at a possible tie-up to sideline Salvini.

Mattarella was consulting with the main parties in parliament on Thursday and telling them he wants a deal within the next few days if they want to avoid snap elections, a source close to the matter told Reuters.

Markets have rallied on hopes that a deal was in the offing, dismissing stumbling blocks such as the lack of any agreement between the parties over who should be prime minister.

On Wednesday, PD leader Nicola Zingaretti laid down five conditions that should form the backbone of any accord — “loyal membership” of the European Union; giving parliament a central role; economic development based on environmental sustainability; a change in handling migrants and a change to economic policy to boost investment.

Those seemed low hurdles for 5-Star to clear, but Zingaretti then added that he would also not accept giving a fresh mandate to the outgoing Conte, a technocrat who is close to 5-Star.

On Thursday he raised the stakes further with three more specific conditions: 5-Star must agree to repeal laws on security and immigration passed during its coalition with the League, revise a plan to cut the number of lawmakers to 600 from 945 and immediately commit to a framework agreement with the PD on the 2020 budget.

5-Star’s support has slumped over the last year and it does not want a return to the polls but it has warned the PD that it should not push too hard.

“We will not accept the PD’s vetoes, they can’t say we must accept their five points or it’s no deal, that Conte must go or it’s no deal,” said Manlio Di Stefano, a junior foreign minister and one of 5-Star’s most prominent lawmakers.

Mattarella is due to meet 5-Star’s delegation at 1500 GMT, after which its leader Luigi Di Maio is expected to set out his party’s position.

[VIDEO] FBI Names 80 Nigerians As Part Of Largest Fraud, Money Laundering Scam In US History

The Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) on Thursday released the names of 80 fraud and money laundering suspects, many of whom have been arrested with full details and identities of the suspected fraudsters being Nigerians, arrested in the country.

According to a statement released by the US authorities, the suspects either played major roles in the alleged fraud or acted as accomplices.

The United States attorney, Nick Hanna, said: “This case is part of our ongoing efforts to protect Americans from fraudulent online schemes and to bring to justice those who prey upon American citizens and businesses.

“Today, we have taken a major step to disrupt criminal networks that use BEC schemes, romance scams and other frauds to fleece victims.

“This indictment sends a message that we will identify perpetrators – no matter where they reside – and we will cut off the flow of ill-gotten gains.”

The country named Valentine Iro, 31, and Chukwudi Christogunus Igbokwe, 38, as lead suspects adding that once a victim deposited funds into a bank account or a money services account, the duo allegedly coordinated with others to further launder the funds.

Investigations revealed that members of the conspiracy sometimes wired funds to other bank accounts under their control or withdrew same as cash or negotiable instruments such as cashier’s checks.

The US said the suspects often “used illicit money exchangers to move funds overseas, generally avoiding transferring the funds directly through banking institutions, the indictment alleges.

“To do this, Iro and Igbokwe coordinated the transfer of a victim’s funds from a fraudulent bank account they controlled to US bank accounts belonging to illicit money exchangers.

“Those money exchangers, in turn, used a Nigerian banking application to transfer other funds in naira (₦), the currency of Nigeria, from Nigerian bank accounts they controlled to the Nigerian bank accounts specified by Iro and Igbokwe,” the statement said.

The authorities said this strategy was used to transfer millions of dollars to Nigerian co-conspirators without directly transferring funds overseas.

“We believe that this is one of the largest cases of its kind in the history of the United States of America. As described in a 145-page indictments

A Polish official says three people, including a child, have been killed by lightning during a sudden thunderstorm in Poland’s southern Tatra Mountains.

The spokeswoman for Krakow’s provincial governor, Joanna Pazdzio, told The Associated Press she was told about the deaths by the leaders of the rescue operation that was taking place Thursday afternoon in the Tatras.

The Tatra rescue service, TOPR, said rescuers were dispatched to Giewont peak where a group of people, including children, had been struck by lightning. TOPR chief Jan Krzysztof said a number of people on the peak and at other locations were dead and about a dozen people were injured.

Kinga Czerwinska of the Airborne Ambulance Service said four helicopters were sent in to help. She said lightning had struck Giewont peak, a popular trekking destination, and other locations in the Tatras.

Former Indian Finance Minister In Custody

An arrested former finance minister and senior opposition leader in India is set to be tried in a special court on Thursday after having been arrested the previous night for his alleged role in a money-laundering case involving income to a local television network.

Arrested by the country’s Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), P Chidambaram is accused of facilitating foreign investment into INX Media while finance minister in 2007. He was questioned for roughly three hours at the CBI headquarters.

The agency is expected to ask for maximum custody — 14 days — for Chidambaram’s interrogation, said the local Press Trust of India (PTI) news agency.

Meanwhile, the opposition Indian National Congress accused the government of using the CBI and anti-economic crime agency Enforcement Directorate as “personal revenge-seeking departments”.

“Over the last two days India witnessed the broad daylight murder of democracy as also the rule of law,” Congress spokesman Randeep Surjewala told PTI.

He asserted that the senior politician was arrested without any legal basis while many accused in the same case walk free.

Iraq To Sue Shia Military Leader Who ‘Insulted’ The Army

Iraq’s defence ministry is to sue the commander of the Popular Mobilisation Forces (PMF) for insulting the army

A senior leader of the Hashd al-Shaabi, also known as the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF), recently criticized the Iraqi army’s capabilities and called for its replacement by Shia militia groups, drawing ire from the Defense Ministry and the Iraqi Parliament.

Yusuf al-Nasseri, deputy leader of the pro-Iran Harakat Hezbollah al-Nujaba militia, delivered his comments during a recent interview with Iraq’s al-Itijah television channel, which sparked widespread controversy and reactions from parties, ministers, and parliament.

“I call for the rebuilding of the security services again, and I call for the dissolution of the Iraqi army and for the [PMF] to be considered the primary army,” Nasseri said.

“We do not need an army to recruit a soldier, with a $1,000 in salaries, so that when an attack takes place, they toss their uniforms and weapons before running away,” the militia leader argued, referring to the fall of Mosul at the hands of the Islamic State in 2014, where the Iraqi army abandoned the city.

Nasseri described Iraq’s army as “a mercenary army.”

“This is an army that is not genuine.”

On Wednesday, the Iraqi Ministry of Defense responded to what it said was “a strange statement,” and asked Nasseri to withdraw his comments and apologize.

“The Joint Operations Command reserves its legal right to take appropriate action against those who attempt to offend the Iraqi army and Iraqi security forces,” the ministry’s statement added.

Alla al-Rubaie, an Iraqi lawmaker, called on the Iraqi Ministry of Defense to file a lawsuit against those who insult the Iraqi army.

Rubaie labeled Nasseri’s comments as “an insult to the people of Iraq as a whole,” not only to a particular party.

He warned that the repetition of such comments would affect the relationship with the country’s security forces and eventually “affect the political situation.”

The PMF, an umbrella of dozens of Shia militia groups, to which Harakat Hezbollah al-Nujaba belongs, also released a statement, noting that any insults directed at security forces, especially the Iraqi army, was “unacceptable.”

The PMF also stated that Nasseri’s comments are his alone and not representative of the militia group.

Earlier in March, the US State Department designated Harakat Hezbollah al-Nujaba as a terrorist organization, and called it an “Iranian proxy group.”

Nujaba is “funded by, but not under the control of the Iraqi government,” the US State Department explained. It has “openly pledged its loyalties to Iran and Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei.”

Niko Kovac Reveals Why Bayern Munich Fined Renato Sanches

Bayern Munich head coach Niko Kovac confirmed the earlier reports that Renato Sanches was fined this week. However, Sanches was not penalized for his post-game interview, where he made it clear that he wanted to leave. Apparently, the 22-year-old skipped training after the Hertha Berlin game. AZ captured Kovac’s staement on why Sanches was fined:

There was a fine. That is true. It’s not because Renato said something after the game though. It was solely because he did not go through the training drills that took place right after the game. Those who did not play did runs with Bayern fitness coach Holger Broich after the game so they could get a physical stimulus. He (Renato) was already in the locker room. He took a shower and then he went home. That’s why he got the fine.”

Kovac then expanded on the circumstances surrounding the missed training session:

It was a training session that ultimately did not take place. We can’t let that just go unpunished, though. The fact that someone is disappointed is just part of the deal.

Syrian Man Jailed For Killing That Sparked Far-Right Riots In Germany

A Syrian asylum seeker accused of a killing that sparked a week of far-right street violence in the eastern German city of Chemnitz in 2018 has been found guilty of manslaughter.

Alaa Sheikhi, 24, was sentenced to nine and a half years in prison by the Chemnitz higher regional court on Thursday.

The trial was held in the state capital of Dresden for security reasons and because of what the court called the “extraordinarily high public interest”.

The timing of the ruling is sensitive, coming just a over a week before state elections in Saxony in which the far-right and anti-immigrant Alternative für Deutschland could emerge as the strongest party.

The court verdict also comes almost exactly a year after Sheikhi and an accomplice are believed to have stabbed to death 35-year-old Daniel Hillig, a carpenter with German-Cuban roots, following a confrontation.

The main suspect, a 22-year-old Iraqi man referred to in German media only as Farhad A, remains at large and is believed to have fled the country.

The atmosphere in Chemnitz turned sour soon after news of Hillig’s death became public, culminating in two days of far-right street violence that left several people injured.

Some people were filmed chasing foreigners through streets, while others were seen with Nazi-linked banners and giving the straight-arm salute.

After police shut down a street festival, Chemnitz became the scene for a week of far-right protests, attended by thousands of neo-Nazis from across the country.

The Chemnitz riots also threw into doubt the future of Angela Merkel’s coalition government. At the time, the German chancellor’s spokesperson, Steffen Seibert, condemned the attacks, saying “such riotous assemblies, the hunting down of people who appear to be from different backgrounds or the attempt to spread hate in the streets, these have no place in our country”.

But the head of Germany’s domestic intelligence agency, Hans-Georg Maaßen, directly contradicted the chancellor, telling the Bild newspaper that he shared “the scepticism towards media reports of rightwing extremists chasing down foreigners in Chemnitz”, and that “deliberate misinformation” had been spread.

In the fall-out over the comments Maaßen lost his job and the governing coalition between Merkel’s centre-right CDU and the centre-left SPD clashed to a point where their working alliance appeared to be on the brink of collapse.
