Trump reversed course on his investigation into voter fraud, which he repeatedly has claimed caused Hillary Clinton to win the popular vote.
President Donald Trump tweeted on Thursday morning about the end of his voter fraud commission, blaming mainly Democrats for failing to hand over voter data.
"Many mostly Democrat States refused to hand over data from the 2016 Election to the Commission On Voter Fraud. They fought hard that the Commission not see their records or methods because they know that many people are voting illegally. System is rigged, must go to Voter I.D.," Trump tweeted.
"As Americans, you need identification, sometimes in a very strong and accurate form, for almost everything you do…..except when it comes to the most important thing, VOTING for the people that run your country. Push hard for Voter Identification!" Trump continued.
The tweets follow Trump reversing course on his investigation into voter fraud, which he repeatedly has claimed caused Hillary Clinton to win the popular vote in the 2016 presidential election.
"Despite substantial evidence of voter fraud, many states have refused to provide the Presidential Advisory Commission on Election Integrity with basic information relevant to its inquiry. Rather than engage in endless legal battles at taxpayer expense, today President Donald J. Trump signed an executive order to dissolve the Commission, and have asked the Department of Homeland Security to review these issues and determine next courses of action," a White House statement on Wednesday said.
While Trump has never demonstrated that millions voted illegally, as he often claims, many civil rights advocates denounce voter identification requirements as a large scale driver of disenfranchisement for the historically disenfranchised.
"Many Americans do not have one of the forms of identification states acceptable for voting. These voters are disproportionately low-income, racial and ethnic minorities, the elderly, and people with disabilities," the American Civil Liberties Union wrote of voter identification laws.
But while no clear evidence suggests that a significant number of US citizens illegally voted, voter registration is not without its quirks.
While Trump was denouncing the suspected illegal voting during the early days of his presidency, it came out that several members of his own family were registered to vote in two states, something he specifically promised to investigate.
Other civic duties, like jury duty, do require identification from participants.

We were three women. Three friends. We had goals, hopes and dreams. We had careers. Two of us had boyfriends. We owned houses. We all had love. Then I made these… wigs. I gave them to my two friends.
The three of us put them on. The wigs were supposed to make things better. But something went wrong. Like the nation we were trying to improve, we became backward. Instead of giving, we took.
In a recent interview with Pulse Nigeria, Keira Hewatch who plays Rain in the upcoming movie spoke about the readiness of Nigerians for a sci-fi movie.
"I think that we are playing it safe with the comedy. I'm sure Nigerians can appreciate a wider range of storylines if they are done properly," she said.
"Hello, Rain" aims to begin festival and screening tours in the first quarter of 2018.

The former world number one male tennis player's career is "hanging in the balance" as he struggles to return to form.
Former world number one male tennis player Andy Murray is at a career crossroads.
The 30-year-old Briton, who has not competed since Wimbledon last summer, has been forced to withdraw from the Brisbane International tournament and the Australian Open — the first tennis major of 2018.
"Sadly I won't be playing in Melbourne this year, as I am not yet ready to compete," Murray said in a short statement.
This is all because Murray is struggling to overcome a hip injury that has plagued him for six months. According to The Guardian's sports columnist Kevin Mitchell, his career "hangs in the balance."
In the six months since his shock Wimbledon loss to Sam Querrey, Murray has undergone rehabilitation on an "unspecified problem on his hip" and lost exhibition matches in uninspiring fashion. Last week, he lost 2-6 to Bautista Agut in Abu Dhabi.
In an Instagram post Murray published this week, the Scot revealed two options he is facing.
"Obviously continuing rehab is one option and giving my hip more time to recover," Murray wrote.
Another option is surgery, something he is loathe to do as it could call the curtain on his time spent competing at the elite level.
"Surgery is also an option but the chances of a successful outcome are not as high as I would like, which has made this my secondary option and my hope has been to avoid that," he went on.
Speaking on Thursday after withdrawing from the Australian Open, Murray said: "I'll be flying home shortly to assess all the options but I appreciate all the messages of support and I hope to be back playing soon."
If he does chose surgery he can expect six months out of action, according to The Telegraph.
Considering he has already been sidelined for six months, that would mean a year away from the sport, at best.
Murray once said he believed he could play at the elite level until he was 33. However, with surgery, he would not return to the court until he was 31. Even then, there are no guarantees he would ever rediscover his best form.
It is, perhaps, this recognition that led Murray to tell his Instagram followers: "I wanted to keep everyone in the loop and get this off my chest as it's really hurting inside."

Although Buhari is yet to decide whether he would run or not, Shittu said his 'ardent supporters' will go ahead with the campaign hoping to convince him to seek re-election.
Shittu disclosed this on Wednesday, January 3, in an interview with State House correspondents shortly after meeting with Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
Shittu said, "It goes without saying; if you have a child who goes to a primary school and he does well; he proceeds to a secondary school and he does well, and you keep asking if he will be going to university. It goes without saying.
"By the grace of God, we, his (Buhari’s) ardent supporters who appreciate his worth on behalf of millions of Nigerians, would urge him to re-contest.
"I know he has not made up his mind but I can say some of us can assist him in making up his mind so that Nigeria can continue to enjoy stability and progress in our land."
He said the campaign office expected to be inaugurated this month would be the South West Zonal Office.
When asked if the campaign for for 2019 Presidential election has begun, Shittu said: "Every day, since he (Buhari) came into office, all his activities are geared towards letting Nigerians know that they have a saviour, a rescuer, somebody who is committed to providing relief for Nigerians in all respects, in the area of fighting corruption, insurgency whether in the North-East or the Niger Delta; in the area of repairing the economy and providing jobs and providing social stability in the society."
Also, various groups in the north have been agitating that Buhari considers a second term but the Presidency has continued to disassociate from the unofficial 'Buhari for second term' campaigns.

Enugu – There is a seeming normalcy in the fuel distribution in Enugu State as queues at filling stations have reduced even as price of the commodity still remain high in the state.
Our correspondent, who moved round Enugu metropolis on Wednesday, observed that the fuel queues have reduced but the price of the commodity still remain very high in most filling stations.
As at the time this report was filed, only the NNPC mega stations and major marketers such as Oando, Total and Conoil were selling at the approved rate of N145 a litre.
Other marketers, who own about 70 percent of the filling stations in Enugu metropolis, still sell fuel at prices between N220 and N230 per litre.
Following the high cost of petrol, transport fares within Enugu metropolis, which rose during the yuletide, still remain very high.
As at Wednesday, a commercial bus drop in Enugu costs between N70 and N100 as against N30 and N50 before the fuel crisis started in December.
Some of the commercial bus operators, who spoke with our correspondent on Wednesday, said that they still buy fuel at exorbitant prices.
Commercial tricycle (keke) operators, who also spoke, blamed the high cost of fuel for the exorbitant fares they charge passengers.
“I buy fuel at N230 a litre and I have to recover the money I spent on fuel. If I want to go and queue up at NNPC mega station, then you will not see me on the road because it takes two days to get fuel at the mega station,” a keke operator said.
A source at the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR), who pleaded anonymity, accused Enugu State Government officials, especially an aide of the governor, of colluding with the marketers to frustrate efforts by the department in tackling the fuel crisis.
It was gathered that the governor’s aide approached the DPR and warned the agency to allow the marketers to do their business.

Lagos – Chief Olisa Agbakoba (SAN), a former President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has given a seven-day ultimatum to the National Assembly to review the process of presentation of the annual budget appropriation in line with the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
In a letter dated January, 3, 2018 and titled: “Is 2018 Appropriation Bill Constitutional?” copied to both the Senate President and Speaker, House of Representatives, Agbakoba argued that the three arms of government are expected to prepare their different appropriation bills for each financial year, submitted before the National Assembly after which it is appropriated, harmonised as a bill and presented to the president for his assent in line with sections 81 to 84 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended).
He added that the legislature and the executive arms have jettisoned due process in implementing the express provisions of the constitution.
Besides, the lawyer submitted that the action by the lawmakers and the executive arm of government amount to brazen violations of the existing court judgment in Olisa Agbakoba vs Attorney General of the Federation and others in Suit No. FHC/ABJ/CS/63/2013, which had declared as unconstitutional the annual presentation of the nation’s budget by the president and commander in chief.
Threatening a legal action to reverse the process by enforcing the decision of the Federal High Court and set aside the 2018 Appropriation Bill, Agbakoba stated, “Please note that if after seven days the constitutional procedure is not complied with, we shall have no choice but to initiate legal proceedings to enforce the decision of the Federal High Court and set aside the 2018 Appropriation Bill.
“In summary, the constitutional procedure for preparing the appropriation bill is that each arm of government (the Executive, Legislature and the Judiciary) lays before the National Assembly its estimates of revenue and expenditure for each financial year after which it is appropriated, harmonised as a bill and presented to the President for his assent.
He added: “Unfortunately, the executive has failed to comply with this procedure by laying before the National Assembly estimates of revenues and expenditure for the judiciary.
“This is in spite of a subsisting Federal High Court decision in Olisa Agbakoba Vs. Attorney General Of The Federation & Others Suit No. FHC/ABJ/CS/63/2013 that has declared this practice unconstitutional.
“We suggest that the National Assembly draws the attention of the executive to the decision of the Federal High Court. The National Assembly should request the National Judicial Council to lay before it the Judiciary’s estimates of revenue and expenditure for 2018 and the executive be made to represent its estimates for 2018.”
Furthermore, the lawyer affirmed that there was no evidence that the National Assembly has laid its budget estimates and that of the other arms, including the judiciary before the National Assembly.

Niger Delta: Nigerian government has neglected us – Clark
The marketers, however, appealed to the Federal Government to grant them tax holidays and other incentives that will help cut their costs.
The Chairman, Depot and Petroleum Products Marketers Association, Dapo Abiodun, had on Tuesday said importing petrol at a controlled price of N145 per litre is bad business for them.
But according to a Punch report, the marketers agreed with the Federal Government to sell at N145 per litre.
The agreement was reached at a meeting of the ad hoc committee set up by the Presidency, which was held at the Federal Ministry of Petroleum's headquarters in Abuja on Wednesday, January 3, 2018.
The committee was set up to get the oil marketers to restart the importation of refined petroleum products.
It was gathered that the marketers also appealed to the Federal Government to grant them tax holidays and other incentives that will help cut their costs when they resume fuel importation.

Also, four sub-committees headed by the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Ibe Kachikwu were reportedly constituted at the meeting.
"Four sub-committees were inaugurated by the minister and we agreed on a price that is good for Nigerians, which of course, is the current price. All these and more will be in the communique that will be released soon," a source at the meeting told Punch.
Another source was quoted as saying that the agreements reached at the meeting will be relayed to the Presidency before a communique containing all that was discussed will be made public.

Melania Trump was not happy when her husband won the election, and was reportedly in tears when his victory was confirmed.
First lady Melania Trump was not happy when her husband, President Donald Trump, won the 2016 election, and reportedly cried in despair once it became clear he would win, according to a new report from New York Magazine.
Melania, along with the rest of the Trump team, was sure their candidate would lose to Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton in the 2016 election, so once it became clear his victory was all but assured on election night, she reportedly broke out in tears.
A source told Michael Wolff, who wrote a book on the early days of the Trump administration, that Trump's son, Donald Trump, Jr., told a friend that Trump looked liked he had seen a ghost upon learning he was likely to win the election and actually become president.
The White House blasted the claims in a statement on Wednesday.
"This book is clearly going to be sold in the bargain fiction section," Stephanie Grisham, communications director for the first lady, said in a statement. "Mrs. Trump supported her husband's decision to run for president and in fact, encouraged him to do so. She was confident he would win and was very happy when he did."
This isn't the first time reports have surfaced claiming Melania never wanted to be in the White House. A friend of the Trump family told Vanity Fair last year that Melania didn't want to be first lady "come hell or high water."
"This isn't something she wanted and it isn’t something he ever thought he'd win," the friend told Vanity Fair.
But since the election, the first lady has seemed to embrace her role alongside her husband, and has gone on to champion causes like cyberbullying during Trump's first year in office.
Trump himself contradicted reports that Melania was not looking forward to her role in a tweet in November.
"Melania, our great and very hard working First Lady, who truly loves what she is doing, always thought that 'if you run, you will win.' She would tell everyone that, 'no doubt, he will win,'" Trump wrote. "I also felt I would win (or I would not have run) – and Country is doing great!"
