Tech: Silicon Valley elites can't get enough of dangerous, untreated 'raw water' — here's why it's a bad idea

null

A Silicon Valley startup is charging more than $60 for jugs of spring water that hasn't been treated. That's a dangerous idea.

  • People in San Francisco are spending upwards of $60 for a 2.5 gallon glass jug of "fresh, live spring water."
  • The water isn't filtered or treated, which means it could harbor microbial viruses and bacteria that cause disease and deadly diarrhea.
  • American tap water isn't perfectly clean, but it's tested to stricter health standards than bottled water.

The founders of a company called Live Water, which sells unfiltered, untreated water in glass containers, want customers to believe that tap water is just too "dead."

Founder Mukhande Singh told the The New York Times that those who drink the regulated H2O that comes out of kitchen taps, public water fountains, and garden hoses are "drinking toilet water with birth control drugs in them."

In San Francisco, his idea has gathered quite a following: the water is regularly sold out in grocery stores and people are spending more than $1 per glass to the drink water that's never been treated.

The company warns consumers on its site: "Consult your health care provider before making a decision to switch your drinking water source." But food safety experts tell Business Insider it’s a terrible idea to drink untreated water.

Why can unfiltered water be dangerous?

There are billions of people around the world living a "raw" water lifestyle right now. And it’s not very glamorous.

Chemicals like lead, microbes from feces (both animal and human), pesticide runoff, and underground waste are just some of the global threats to clean drinking water.

The US water system isn't perfect. A 2009 New York Times investigation found there was enough arsenic in the water in some parts of Texas, Arizona and Nevada to contribute to cancer.

But American drinking water does pretty well when stacked up against other countries where citizens might drink from less-than-ideally-filtered sources. The World Health Organization says dirty drinking water kills half a million people every year, and at least 2 billion people use a drinking water source contaminated with feces.

Guzzling from fresh mountain streams won't solve these problems. Clear mountain sources can infect hikers with the parasite Giardia, while another tiny, one-celled parasite called cryptosporidia can be deadly for people with compromised immune systems, and cause weeks of watery diarrhea for everyone else. Cryptospordium can infect a person even if they ingest a single bacterium.

How the US treats water

In the US, The Environmental Protection Agency is required to enforce The Safe Drinking Water Act. Passed in 1974, the federal law regulates over 90 contaminants in tap water. Most big cities are constantly monitoring their water supplies. In New York City in 2016, the Department of Environmental Protection tested more than 51,500 water samples.

Live Water says it tested a few of its own samples from its spring source in Oregon. Those vials came back negative for Legionella and other illness-causing contaminants, but the tests the company used were not performed up to federal regulatory compliance standards. Singh and his company also tout the health benefits of their spring water, but the single scientific research paper that they cite isn't about drinking water at all: it refers to the healing effects of spring water for rabbit wounds.

The Live Water team also says that their water is infused with some good stuff that tap water doesn't have. "Sodium, potassium, magnesium and calcium are the four primary electrolytes that maintain the body’s fluid balance. LIVE WATER is abundant in each," the company writes on its website.

Physicians who’ve studied the mineral content in tap water in 21 major cities across North America say most of our tap water already has a healthy amount of calcium, magnesium and sodium. In many locations, tap water contains enough to provide up to 8% of a person’s daily dietary reference intake, if they’re well hydrated.

Live Water did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Why is there fluoride in tap water?

The raw water evangelists told The Times that fluoride in tap water is "a mind-control drug that has no benefit to our dental health."

There's no evidence to support this. But fluoride, which is often naturally present at low levels in water, has been added in to some tap water for decades to help prevent cavities. The EPA regulates these levels to make sure the concentrations aren’t too high. (Kids under 8 can get too much fluoride, which can cause some cosmetic discoloration of teeth.)

What about lead?

The complex web of rivers, lakes, reservoirs and groundwater sources that people in the US draw on to drink from isn't perfect. What happened in Flint, Michigan in 2014 is a textbook example of water resource management gone wrong.

The city switched its main water source from the Detroit to the Flint River to save some money. Lead that started leaking into the drinking supply from the pipes wasn’t properly treated, and smelly, colored water flowed into homes. According to The Atlantic, there has been both a spike in miscarriages and drop in birth rates in Flint since then.

Marc Edwards, one of the first engineers who studied the water problem in Flint, says there's no way to be completely sure you'll never get sick from drinking water: "It is not possible to achieve zero health risk, with any water at all," he wrote Business Insider in an email. But he says "most cities provide tap water to standards that pose very little health risk at reasonable cost."

There are a few things everyone can do to make sure that the water they're drinking is up to par. There’s an annual drinking water report from the EPA, as well as an independent tap water database available from the Environmental Working Group. If you're worried about how clean your water might be, you can use an NSF/ANSI-approved filter at home.

But for some Americans, indulging in unregulated water may be about more than staying hydrated and healthy. Edwards believes they might really be seeking out some kind of mystical "glacial purity" or a hidden "fountain of youth," while shunning what they perceive as more "poisoned water."

At that point, he says, a person's urge to avoid the tap is simply "beyond the ability of science to quantify."

Politics: Trump says he won't do a deal on DACA without border wall, end to 'chain migration' and diversity visa lottery

President Donald Trump speaks during a meeting with Republican Senators on immigration in the Roosevelt Room at the White House, Thursday, Jan. 4, 2018, in Washington.

Trump said any legislation on DACA must also include funding for a wall along the US-Mexico border and major changes to legal immigration categories.

  • President Donald Trump said he believes legislation on the fate of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program recipients will be "terrific."
  • But at the same time, he said any deal must include other immigration measures, such as a border wall and the elimination of the diversity visa lottery.

President Donald Trump on Thursday repeated his stance that any legislation that resolves the fate of hundreds of thousands of young, unauthorized immigrants must also include funding for a wall along the US-Mexico border and major changes to legal immigration categories.

But he also expressed optimism that Congress could hammer out a "spectacular" deal. Before a meeting on immigration with Republican lawmakers, Trump told reporters he believes "DACA is going to be terrific," referring to the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program which he is terminating on March 5.

"Any legislation on DACA must secure the border with a wall, it must give our immigration officers the resources they need to stop illegal immigration, and also to stop visa overstays, and crucially, the legislation must end chain migration. It must end the visa lottery. Dangerous," Trump said.

"We'd love to take care of DACA but we're only going to do it under these conditions."

Trump's insistence on the border wall in exchange for a deal on DACA is widely seen as a nonstarter. Democrats have been supportive of certain border security measures, but have stopped short of supporting a physical wall.

The talks come amid growing urgency for thousands of young immigrants whose DACA protections have already lapsed, or will do so after the program is fully phased out in March.

An open letter signed by three former Homeland Security secretaries on Wednesday urged Congress to act by January 19 to allow a new program enough time to be properly implemented, and to minimize the harm done to immigrants whose lose their work authorization and protection from deportation in the meantime.

'Chain migration' and the diversity visa lottery

Trump, in his remarks on Thursday, also railed against so-called "chain migration," which broadly refers to immigration based on family ties instead of employment, and the diversity visa lottery, which he has targeted since the revelation that a suspected terrorist in New York City entered the US through the program years ago.

Trump has falsely accused countries several times of sending their "worst people" through the lottery program, and did so again on Thursday.

"They put down their probably worst people, who knows? But they're not looking to get rid of their best people. They put their worst people in a hopper and we're picking out the people, and then we find out what do we have?" he said. "It's not a good situation. The lottery system, it has to be laughed at by other countries when they send these people in."

In fact, countries don't "send" the US anyone using the visa lottery program. Millions of prospective immigrants enter the lottery on their own each year, roughly 50,000 of which are randomly selected and given the typical security screenings and vetting before being permitted to enter.

Trump has already backed a bill, known as the RAISE Act, which would slash legal immigration by half over the next decade, in part by eliminating family-based immigration categories and the diversity visa lottery. But the bill is widely unpopular among both Republicans and Democrats.

Tech: Bill Gates: Trust me, the world is really getting better, not worse

Microsoft cofounder Bill Gates.

The data shows the world is healthier, wealthier and nicer, Bill Gates says. It just doesn't feel that way because people are focused on negative news.

  • In a new editorial for Time Magazine, tech billionaire Bill Gates says data shows the world is getting better not worse.
  • Gates says the widespread feeling to the contrary is due in part to the news media, which focuses on negative stories.
  • In addition to writing the editorial Gates guest edited the latest issue of Time magazine and filled it with optimistic news.

In the wake of hurricanes, mass shootings and the shadow of a nuclear war, the world's richest man wants you to take heart.

The world, he says, is actually getting better.

In an editorial in Time, Bill Gates notes many trends — ranging from the rates of child mortality to the number of countries now offering protections for gays and lesbians — are heading in a positive direction. We just don't hear much about them, because of the focus on negative news.

"These events — as awful as they are — have happened in the context of a bigger, positive trend," Gates writes. "On the whole, the world is getting better."

Among the developments he points to are:

  • A drastic decrease in child mortality rates for children under five. They're down by half since 1990, saving the lives of 122 million children.
  • A dramatic decline in the proportion of the world population that lives in extreme poverty, from more than a third of the population in 1990 to about one-tenth today.
  • A huge increase in the number of children who attend primary school worldwide; more than 90% now do.
  • Laws that protect gay people are now in place in 100 countries
  • A rising number of women worldwide are being elected to public office.

Gates blames the media for spreading the widespread feeling of pessimism. People are more likely to read bad news, which encourages news organizations to focus on the negative stuff, he argues.

In addition to having Gates write an editorial, Time asked him to guest edit its latest issue. He used the opportunity to fill the magazine with positive stories. The issue includes essays from some of Gates' friends who also feel optimistic about the future.

In his essay for the magazine, Berkshire Hathaway CEO Warren Buffett asserts Americans' standard of living will continue to rise "for many generations to come." Biogen vice president Samantha Budd Haeberlein writes in her piece that her company is close to a cure for Alzheimer’s.

Meanwhile, U2 front man Bono says in his essay he believes more men are starting to understand that they need to join the fight against misogyny and violence against women.

"Men can’t step back and leave it to women alone — to the Merkels and Malalas — to clean up the mess we’ve made and are still making," he says.

Finance: There's a new biggest bull on Wall Street now that Trump has signed tax cuts into law

Keith Parker

UBS' Keith Parker expects the lower corporate tax rate to lift corporate profits by 7% this year.

  • UBS' Keith Parker raised his year-end target for the S&P 500 to 3,150 from 2,900, citing the passage of the Republican tax plan.
  • His forecast is the highest among strategists at major Wall Street firms.
  • He expects the lower corporate tax rate to lift corporate profits by 7% this year.

UBS' head of US equity strategy has raised his bullish view on the stock market now that the Republican tax plan has become law.

Parker increased his year-end S&P 500 target to 3,150 from 2,900, and has the highest forecast among strategists at major firms. His forecast is about 16% higher than where the index opened at an all-time high on Thursday, three trading days into the new year. In his most optimistic scenario, Parker sees the market going up to 3,330, by 22%.

"Positive economic data as measured by data surprise indices has supported much of the recent return for US equities, as earnings revision ratios for 2017 EPS (i.e. ex tax) have been very positive and are the strongest since 2010," Parker said in a note on Thursday.

"However, the index also appears to be pricing in more of the tax bill than it was in mid-December."

Parker estimates that the S&P 500 has priced in 60%-70% of the tax cut impact, based on how it's traded since he released his previous outlook on November 14.

He forecast that the lower corporate tax rate would lift company earnings by 7.2%, excluding the effect of limits on interest deductibility. And just like the tax repatriation holiday of 2004, Parker expects companies to do heavy buybacks and acquisitions, which should also support earnings per share growth.

Badoo Suspects Hypnotise, Smash Victims’ Head, Take Blood – Police

Badoo

The Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, Edgal Imohimi, on Thursday disclosed how three arrested Badoo suspects hypnotised and smashed their victims’ head while asleep.

Imohimi said this while presenting the suspects to newsmen in Lagos.

He gave their names as; Chibuzo Igwe, Samuel Akaeze a.k.a Samito, Gift Akaeze, Omotayo Abamoyegun and Fatai Adebayo, a herbalist who fortified the cultists before going on operations.

According to him, on December 30, 2017 at about 2:30am the peace of Lagos was disturbed at Alajo Close, Obese, a suburb of Ikorodu, when three suspects invaded one late Shakiru Yekini’s compound where he was killed alongside his wife and his six-month old baby injured.

“Abamoyegun usually sprays powder into the abode of their victims which makes them fall into deep sleep after which other members of the gang smash their head with grinding stone.

“Having certified that they are dead, the suspects use white handkerchiefs to scrub their victims’ blood for ritual purposes.

“Luck, however, ran out of them when one of the victims raised alarm and the vigilante men on duty alerted policemen who quickly cordoned off the area.

“Chibuzor Igwe was arrested at the scene and he made startling revelation which led to the arrest of Abamoyegun and Akaeze.

“Please note that a grinding stone used to smash the victims’ head, smeared with blood was recovered at the murder scene and taken to the lab for forensic analysis to back up our evidence in court.

“One Gift Akaeze, wife to one of the suspects, Samuel, was arrested for allegedly supplying information to the suspects on where to strike.

“Abamoyegun also usually takes the suspects to one Fatai Adebayo, an herbalist, who specialises in fortifying the suspects and blessing their stone before operation.

“The herbalist has been arrested and his shrine in Ijebu Imosan has been destroyed in an operation which I led,” he said.

The Commissioner said that the war against the suspected killers would continue and that the police would not relent until all the killers were brought to justice.

Tech: These 20 US counties produce the most successful people

null

A former Google data scientist's analysis produced a county-by-county breakdown of where the most successful people in the US grew up.

  • As part of his recent book "Everybody Lies," former Google data scientist Seth Stephens-Davidowitz analyzed 150,000 editor-approved Wikipedia entries.
  • His analysis produced a county-by-county breakdown of where the most successful people in the US grew up.
  • Many of the counties have several things in common, from geography to cultural diversity.

There are no guarantees that growing up in Chattahoochee County, Georgia or Pitkin County, Colorado will solidify your place in the record books, but it sure doesn't hurt.

According to Seth Stephens-Davidowitz, a former Google data scientist who analyzed more than 150,000 editor-approved Wikipedia entries for his recent book " target="_blank"Everybody Lies," those two counties top the list for producing the most successful people.

Here is the full breakdown.

Stephens-Davidowitz based the analysis solely on baby boomers — because they have had a lifetime to become prominent — and assumed that people listed in Wikipedia were noteworthy enough to be deemed "successful."

He omitted every entry he could for criminals and other infamous figures.

The resulting list includes a number of suburban and rural areas, which may be seem surprising. But Stephens-Davidowitz reasoned there are two big factors at play. In general, people who are successful tend to grow up in culturally diverse areas that sit near big college towns.

For example, the counties containing Madison, Wisconsin; Berkeley, California; Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and Ithaca, New York were all in the top 3% of page frequency. Those towns are home to the University of Madison, Wisconsin; University of California, Berkeley; UNC Chapel Hill; and Cornell.

However, if two college towns were of the same size, the more diverse one often produced more prominent Americans, he wrote.

"Perhaps this effort to zoom in on the places where hundreds of thousands of the most famous Americans were born can give us some initial strategies," Stephens-Davidowitz concluded of the research, "encouraging immigration, subsidizing universities, and supporting the arts, among them."

BUA Management Reacts To Edo Governor’s Action On Obu-Okpella Site

BUA

Benin – The management of BUA International Limited on Thursday condemned Edo state Governor, Godwin Obaseki’s shutting down of one of its mining sites in Obu-Okpella and the arrest of two of their staff working on site.

This was contained in a statement signed by Group Head, Corporate Communications, BUA International Limited, O’tega Ogra, titled: “Re-Brazen Acts Of Impunity: Edo State Governor Orders Arrest Of BUA Staff”.

According to the Statement, “We have been made aware that on Wednesday, January 3, the Edo State Governor, in the company of some security operatives, visited one of our mining sites in Obu-Okpella, Edo State to effect a Gestapo-style forceful shutdown of that mine despite a subsisting court pronouncement that the mine be allowed to operate.

“Upon reaching that mining site and not meeting any personnel or equipment, two BUA Cement employees were invited to the mining site to receive the Governor.

“We later learnt that these employees were arrested upon arrival on the orders of the Governor and taken away for no just reason.

“As it stands, we do not know why they were arrested but have requested our lawyers to secure their unconditional release immediately as these employees are innocent and have no knowledge of why they were being arrested.

“Now that one of our mining sites has been forcefully closed down by the Governor without regard to the court’s pronouncement on maintaining status quo at that particular site (and without any formal communication from the Edo State Government), BUA as a responsible corporate entity has instructed its lawyers to report back to the courts on this latest developments and pursue all legal channels to enforce its rights.

“Whilst the Governor based the legitimacy of his actions on a purported Stop-Work order from the Ministry of Mines, BUA wishes to reiterate that there is a pronouncement of the Federal High Court sitting in Benin on December 5, 2017 that declared the Stop-work order issued by the Ministry as a contravention of the Court’s directives to maintain status quo and thus deemed it illegal.

“The same court also threatened to arrest the Minister who is the first defendant in the case if the Stop Word Order continues to be pursued.

“We once again ask all parties to await the conclusion of judicial process as this matter is already before a court of competent jurisdiction.”

Buhari’s Inability To Take Charge Of Nigeria’s Security Responsible For Killings – Dickson

Dickson, Bayelsa, Paris Club Debt Refund

Yenagoa – Governor Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa State has attributed the challenge of national insecurity and the recent gruesome killing of Nigerians in different parts of the country to President Muhammadu Buhari’s inability to personally take charge of the nation’s security.

He alleged that Buhari had also refused to engage stakeholders on national security, and this had made some leaders of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to politicise security.

Dickson, in a press release on Wednesday, signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Francis Agbo, said that some APC stalwarts had taken advantage of the dysfunctional federal structure “to hijack the security architecture to torment innocent citizens for their selfish ends, and by so doing, causing national insecurity”.

According to him, the wanton killings, maiming and violence that had been going on across the nation, particularly the uncontrolled activities of herdsmen, were not unconnected to the politicisation of security by the Federal Government under Buhari.

He urged the President to call his party leaders, especially those in Bayelsa State, to order and warn them to desist from sponsoring insecurity in the state.

The Governor said that some APC leaders in the state are using the name of the President to compromise security by intimidating security agencies, stockpiling arms and ammunition and killing and ransacking communities at will.

He said he had formally reported the matter to the President and relevant authorities, but regretted that instead of bringing the perpetrators to book, the Federal Government, to his chagrin, not only shielded the criminals from prosecution, but provided them with security.

“These APC leaders exploit the fact that Mr. President is not personally involved in the handling of national security to breach national peace and security.

“They know that he is not in charge of the critical issues of national security because he is not personally handling them the way he should.

“So, they take advantage of the President’s attitude and the dysfunctional Nigerian State to intimidate and blackmail security agencies for their selfish interest, and in the process endanger the safety of lives and property of Nigerians,” Dickson said.

He continued: “These APC leaders use the name of the President to sponsor criminals to unleash savage violence on innocent citizens. Their aim is to cause panic and force them to align with them.

“A case in point is in Bayelsa State where some APC leaders hide under the protection of the Federal Government to stockpile arms and ammunition to maim and kill innocent citizens just to instill fear in them.

“I have personally reported this to Mr. President and to the best of my knowledge, there has not been any decisive action from him or the Federal Government.

“Instead of prosecuting these criminals, the Federal Government has beefed up security around them. The politicisation of national security must stop for there can be no country without security.”

Dickson also condemned the recent killings across the country and warned that the country ceases to have a future if the Federal Government fails to urgently unite the peoples of Nigeria to avert the nation-wide senseless killings.

He further stressed that the country is more than ever before too divided and unstable under the APC-led Federal Government.

The Governor, therefore, called on Buhari to personally handle security matters as well as engage state governors with a view to knowing their specific challenges in the various states of the federation.

Pulse Opinion: Does iROKOtv have better content than cinemas?

Backup Wife poster

There's no doubt that iROKOtv is home to films and actors that deserve to be talked more about.

iROKOtv's content library isn’t just getting bigger, it also seems to have become home to most Nollywood movies.

In 2017, most of the theatrical releases we saw were terrible, mundane and incomprehensible. A sharp contrast to cinema films, streaming platforms such has iROKOtv had more to offer, especially, storywise.

Movies such as "Jail," "Displaced," "Tiwa's Baggage," 'Ovy's Voice," "Glimpse," "Displaced," "Back Up Wife," "For my Girls"  and "Bound by Tradition" were some of the good ones that were released on the site.

There may be reservations regarding the monetary worth of these medium-sized movie projects, but there's no doubt that they create gems and talents that deserve to be talked more about.

These movies do not receive heavy marketing as their cinema counterpart: If you're not paying close attention, you would miss trailers and posters.

Consider this: If "Displaced" by Charles Uwagbai was scheduled for a cinema release, you would be bombarded with trailers, posters, character posters and other marketing techniques, that you would either be enthusiastic or indifferent. Either way, you would be aware that a movie was headed to the cinema.

ALSO READ: WILL 2018 BE A BETTER YEAR FOR THE NIGERIAN FILM INDUSTRY?

In 2017, iROKOtv invested and co-produced cinema movies such as “Picture Perfect,” “Dance to My Beat,” and “Body Language,” which ended up on the streaming platform after their cinema run.

Also, high budget films such as "October 1," "Gbomo Gbomo Express," "Rebecca" and "A Trip to Jamaica" after some time end up on the site.

Meanwhile, some filmmakers simply release their films straight to the platform.

The limited time frame on cinema releases has also given streaming platforms such as iRoko TV an edge. For instance, a cash-grabbing movie or blockbuster is most likely to have a favourable run than a low budget film by an unknown filmmaker and cast.

The streaming platform also eventually becomes home to low budget films that couldn't enjoy a favorable cinema run.

A film which didn't get to last long in theatres ends up getting more exposure because of the platform's huge subscriber base.

"I just want my films to be seen by more people," a popular filmmaker who has released several movies on IrokoTV said.

ALSO READ: HAS 2017 BEEN A TERRIBLE YEAR FOR NOLLYWOOD MOVIES?

In 2017, actors such as Yvonne Jegede, Alexx Ekubo, Seun Akindele, Bimbo Ademoye, Deyemi  Okanlawon and Liz Benson, who were missing on the big screen, featured in some recommendable movies available on Iroko TV.

To properly deliver the kind of content their subscribers want, the CEO Jason Njoku and Co. constantly comb the data from iROKOtv in search of popular trends in terms of genres, actors, themes. The acquired information is used to better inform their commissioning decisions.

“We produce content that will excite and entertain our customers,"  Njoku said to Pulse Nigeria.

Now, this doesn’t mean we just repeat the same formula ad infinitum  – we want to push the boundaries creatively, to ensure we improve and build on our uncatalogued. But at the heart of every commissioning decision is what the ROK or iROKOtv customer wants.”

ALSO READ: HOW IROKOTV IS CHANGING HOW YOU WATCH TELEVISION

Are streaming platforms a threat to cinema movie experience?

Also, movie tickets often cost 1500 naira per movie, a price that is almost a whole year's access to the entire movies on IrokoTV – trash, average or great.

The affordability, convenience and the number of options platforms such as Iroko TV offer cannot be dismissed, but according to Newton Aduaka, the Artistic Director of the Africa International Film Festival (AFRIFF), there's something special about the cinema feeling that cannot be duplicated elsewhere.

"And I think its funny because there's an inverse thing going on where cinemas are closing in Europe and America, but what's interesting is that across Africa, cinema is getting a resuscitation and there are cinemas being built here and there," he said to Pulse Nigeria.

"I hope that we [Nollywood] can take up that mantle and bring back that shared experience of sitting in a space with 200, 300 people."

While IrokoTV seems to have found quite an audience in Millennials, the cinema in its own way still has a unique experience to offer. And if the numbers are to be believed, the Nigerian cinema is on a meteoric rise.

Nevertheless, IrokoTV has over the years been home to the bad, average, and in 2017, the good.

Explore Africa: 11 things you must know before visiting Morocco

Morocco

Morocco is a beautiful country and more and more people are visiting every year.

Morocco is a beautiful country and more and more people are visiting every year.

However, there were also downsides to visiting especially as a woman. If you plan on going, here are a few pointers to help you prepare for your trip.

  1. Dress Appropriately – Guys can dress however they like, but women need to dress more conservatively. Although you see many tourists wearing whatever they want, it is best to cover up as much as possible to avoid unwanted attention. Even if you’re traveling with a group of guys, you may still get harassed. When visiting mosques, you need to cover down to your wrists and ankles. For the ladies out there, it really helps to have a shawl / scarf handy in case you need it.

  2. Currency and Cost – More established shops will take credit card, but smaller markets, street vendors, and cabs will not. Be ready with the local currency. Also keep the correct change with you at all times as Moroccan cab drivers rarely “have change” when you need it. The dilemma with keeping change though is that you will not be able to exchange it back when leaving the country. You want to keep correct change while you’re in the country, but you also want to spend it all before leaving.

  3. Learn to Haggle – If you’re shopping in the markets or medinas, you will have to learn how to haggle. Know what you’re willing to pay before you start the haggling process and walk out if you can’t get the price you want. They may call you back in multiple times. Also, you may want to bargain with your cab drivers before you get in the cab. If you’re looking to buy a carpet or anything with a higher price tag, do your research before you head to Morocco. People get tricked into buying them as “an investment” to sell later all the time. Don’t fall for their sales tactics and the local guide’s added pressure to buy.

  4. Stay Away from Strangers Offering Free Tours or Directions – Even if you don’t hire a local guide, there will be a lot of locals offering you tours while you’re walking around the markets and medinas. If you go with one of them you may end up completely lost and pressed to spend money. Most of the time they will ask for a tip afterward too. This is the same with asking for directions. A lot of them will offer to walk you to where you’re going but then ask for a tip. If you’re so inclined, always have money to pay them off or just plan ahead and ask your hotel or pull up some maps when you have WIFI.

  5. Fridays are Holy Days and Prepare for Holidays – Keep in mind that it is a Muslim country, so pay attention to their holidays otherwise you might be there when everything is closed. Also, most shops and attractions are closed on Friday since it’s their holy day.

  6. Careful What Water You Use – To stay on the safe side, drink bottled water and even use it to brush your teeth. Also, be careful to avoid using any ice when you’re out. If you don’t mind constantly buying bottled water, you can also use a soft bottle for easy use on the go.

  7. What Language Do They Speak? – Moroccans speak a mixture of Arabic, Berber, English, and French. You’ll be fine with English in most of the larger cities, but you’ll probably need a translator in the rural parts of the country. These basic Arabic words will come in handy:

  8. Visiting Mosques – If you’re hoping to visit Mosque in Morocco, you might be out of luck unless you’re Muslim. Most mosques are off-limits to non-Muslims, with the exception of the massive Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca. They are still beautiful to take photos from outside though!

  9. Have the Right Converters – Don’t get stuck in Morocco without a way to charge all your electronics. Pick up a universal adapter as this will save you the stress anytime! If you have something that works in Europe, then it will be the same.

  10. Ask before Taking Photos (And You May Have to Pay) – When you’re walking through the markets, be careful about taking photos of people and shops. Unless you are purchasing something, they may get angry at you and even demand money for the photos. It’s good to first establish a price before taking a photo.

  11. Souvenirs to Bring Home – Leather and carpets are well known in Fez. Fragrances, oils, and spices (like saffron) are famous in Marrakech. If you’re buying saffron, make sure you’re buying the real thing. You can ask them to do a demonstration in water. If it colors the water yellow, it’s real, if it turns reddish, it’s the dye coming out from the artificial saffron.

Rimming: 5 things you need to know about this incredibly pleasurable sexual act

A great guide on ass eating.

It's an illicit act right now, but oral sex was also illicit a couple of years ago. Here is what you need to know.

You already know what rimming is, in case you don’t know what it is, let me just put it bluntly, its called ass eating. Yup, tongue into anal region, it sounds disgusting, but the recipient won’t feel disgusted but rather intense pleasure.

it is one of those things not everyone is into right now, but some people are ahead of their time, and enjoying it already. It’s like what sucking dick or eating pussy was like 30 years ago. People saw them in porn movies, very little people participated in them but now, it’s almost equal to penetrative sex.

We’re here to help you navigate these waters. So, let’s begin

1. It involves kissing and licking of the asshole

No bullshit or fancy way of coating it. It involves the tease or arousal of the anal region with the tongue, and the receiver feels the intense pleasure.

2. How pleasurable is it?

For something that sounds very disgusting, you may be curious as to how pleasurable it is. There are several nerve ending located around the anus and when they’re stimulated, they can highly pleasurable, keyword is highly but it is seen by the larger audience as a taboo. Like every other thing, oral sex was a taboo too but look where we are now.

ALSO READ: 5 things guys think about during shower sex and may not tell you

3. How do I start

Because of the nature of, one of the most important thing to do is to take a thorough bath. After doing this, then try to get your partner into the mood with foreplay. You can even start the foreplay at the shower, help each other bathe, even more romantic before the anal adventure. It requires a lot of foreplay. If the guy is the giver, it might be better to shave off the scruffy beard, the beard that is just growing in unless she like the feel of that against her skin.

4. What position is best

If it’s the first time for the receiver and giver, you both need to relax and play down the nervousness. The best position for rimming is the receiving partners on all fours, like doggy style, with the ass in the air. It’s good not to go directly for the anus, you can start by caressing the ass, try light or rough squeeze depending on what she likes then you can move on to using the finger to trace along the butt cheeks to the anus. Spend some time also kissing the cheeks. Tease her slowly as you make your way to her asshole.

The guy can stand or kneel depending on the height differences between both.

5. What are the techniques to use

Since you’re new into this, it’s only fair to know what to do with the tongue down there. One technique to use is to work the tongue tip in circular motion around anus, you can work it by growing the circle or reducing the radius of the circle, as it goes around. Another technique you can use is try using your tongue to do  a figure-eight.

Here is a bonus point, while performing rimming, it’s possible to transmit STI’s like every other sexual act. There is risk of Hepatitis A, B, and C and other health concerns. Unless you’re both convinced of your partner’s sexual health, you should use protection before rimming them.

Cut open a non-lubricated condom, the lubricated ones can taste gross, spread out the condom over the asshole and continue your business. Also avoid going from the eating to the pussy to eating the ass, it’s dangerous. The vagina is quite sensitive to bacteria that are located outside the vagina, this can cause infection.

Explore Africa: 4 beautiful places to visit in Egypt

White Desert

Long known for its pyramids and ancient civilization, it is also the home of the ancient Pharaohs.

Long known for its pyramids and ancient civilization, it is also the home of the ancient Pharaohs. With vast tracts of desert, superb scuba diving, and the famed Nile River there's something for everyone here.

Egypt has so much for travelers to see and do; it's the perfect country for a mix of activities combining culture, adventure, and relaxation.

1. Pyramids of Giza – This is the oldest and largest of the three pyramids in the Giza pyramid complex bordering what is now El Giza, Egypt. It is the oldest and the last surviving of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, and the only one to remain largely intact.

Built as tombs for the mighty Pharaohs and guarded by the enigmatic Sphinx, Giza's pyramid complex has awed travelers down through the ages and had archaeologists (and a fair few conspiracy theorists) scratching their heads over how they were built for centuries.

Today, these megalithic memorials to dead kings are still as wondrous a sight as they ever were. An undeniable highlight of any Egypt trip, Giza's pyramids should not be missed.

2. Luxor's Karnak Temple and the Valley of the Kings – Famed for the Valley of the Kings, Karnak Temple, and the Memorial Temple of Hatshepsut, the Nile-side town of Luxor in Upper Egypt has a glut of tourist attractions.

The Temples of Luxor and Karnak continue to dominate the city, exuding ruined grandeur with their massive statues, elaborately ornamented walls, and towering pillars designed to showcase the power of the pharaoh. This is ancient Thebes, powerbase of the New Kingdom pharaohs, and home to more sights than most can see on one visit.

While the East Bank brims with vibrant souk action, the quieter West Bank is home to a bundle of tombs and temples that has been called the biggest open air museum in the world.

3. Abu Simbel – Also known as the site of two temples, it is an enormous rock temple complex located on Egypt's border with Sudan. The two temples of this complex were built in the 13th century BC, during the reign of the great and powerful Ramesses II.

This temple is adorned with a colossal statuary standing guard outside, and with an interior sumptuously decorated with wall paintings. It is said that it took twenty years to create the complex and that the temples are dedicated to the gods Ra-Horakty, Ptah, and the deified Ramesses II (The Great Temple) and the goddess Hathor and Queen Nefertari, Ramesses' favourite wife (The Small Temple).

4. White Desert – For unique and spectacular formations, the White Desert is the place to be. People who have visited white desert say it’s a truly magical place that’s hard to leave.

It’s one of the more recently declared protected areas of Egypt which lies totally within the depression of Farafra. The white chalk of the depression is dotted with inselbergs embedded with numerous fossil seashells.

Also the ground here is scattered with thousands of oxidized iron pyrites concretions. Egypt's kookiest natural wonder is the White Desert where surreally shaped chalk mountains have created what looks like a snowy wonderland in the middle of the arid sand.

The landscapes here look like something out of a science fiction movie with blindingly white boulders and iceberg-like pinnacles. For desert fans and adventurers, this is the ultimate weird playground, while anybody who's had their fill of temples and tombs will enjoy this spectacular natural scenery.
