We’ll consider state police ―Senate Leader

The Senate Leader, Ahmed Lawan, has praised Vice President Yemi Osinbajo’s call for the creation of state police as an antidote to the rising security challenges in the country, saying that the National Assembly would consider it.

Speaking to State House correspondents after observing the Juma’at prayers at the State House Abuja Mosque on Friday, he applauded the security summit organized by the legislature as an example of collaboration, cooperation and partnership between the executive and the legislature.

While declaring the summit opened on behalf of President Muhammadu Buhari, Osinbajo had advocated for State Police and community policing, arguing that the Federal Government could not realistically provide security for Nigerian from the centre.

Asked if the legislature would back the Vice President’s call, the Senate Leader said: “Well, I’m not a legislature as such because I am only one member of the legislature.

“But as a committee member of the Ad-hoc Committee on Security and the Review of Security Infrastructure in Nigeria, I believe that the suggestion by the Vice President that we should go the way of state Police and even consider community policing, is very good suggestion and we are going to take it on board in the National Assembly.”

ALSO READ: NAPS passes vote of confidence on Ogun State police command

He opined that the synergy between the executive and the legislature will solve the security problems in the country.

Lawan added: “Of course. That is what we have been able to achieve with this. The Summit was declared open by the Vice President on behalf of Mr President and that was a typical example of collaboration, cooperation and partnership between the executive and the legislature. And we are so happy that this partnership is working.

“We have not concluded because the summit will continue on Monday and that will be the end of this particular summit and then the Senate will pass resolutions which the executive will definitely consider and implement by the grace of God.”

He also spoke about the possibility of successfully tacking the security challenges facing the country, saying that he was optimistic that it could be done.

The lawmaker stated: “Of course. We should be thinking in a very positive manner that we should be able to solve our problems. If we cannot solve the problems, then why did we even venture into it?

“I’m an optimistic person and I believe that coming together, the executive and the legislature, we can solve any problem in Nigeria if we have the support of Nigerians.

“It is not only those of us in government that are supposed to do everything to solve these kinds of challenges. But we need the continuous, and relentless support of citizens to ensure that we are able to provide the kind of solutions we need.”

Lawan backed the appointment of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu to lead the effort to reconcile warring interests in the All Progressive Congress (APC), saying: “Fantastic! In fact that that committee should have been constituted long time ago because APC is plagued by some internal issues and I believe that these are issues that are surmountable.

“The Tinubu committee will definitely add value into reconciling the warring sides so to speak.

“Time is against us. We have to really kickstart these process of reconciliation immediately and I believe that as a family, we should be able to come out very much more united than we were before.”

Finance: UPS and FedEx are tumbling after Amazon says it’s going into shipping (AMZN, FDX, UPS)

UPS stock price amazon shipping

The service is designed to compete directly with UPS and FedEx, the Wall Street Journal reported Friday.

Shares of the two largest US shipping companies, UPS and FedEx, are tumbling after the Wall Street Journal reported that Amazon will launch a competing package delivery service known as SWA, or “Shipping with Amazon.”

UPS was down more than 6% in early trading Friday, while FedEx was off 5%.

Amazon has flirted with shipping its own packages for a while now, most recently in October 2017, when shares of UPS and FedEx fell on news of a program called “seller flex,” in which Amazon would deliver packages on behalf of third-party sellers on the site.

It wasn’t immediately clear how much of an effect losing Amazon’s business will have on FedEx and UPS. In 2016, FedEx VP of Market Development Michael Glenn said Amazon accounts for just 3% of the Memphis-based carrier’s revenue.

UPS, on the other hand, carries about 30 percent of Amazon’s total US shipments — roughly $1 billion of annual revenue. That’s only 1.5% of the Atlanta-based carrier’s $65.87 billion 2017 revenue.

SWA will roll out in Los Angeles over the next few weeks, according to the Wall Street Journal, and will then spread to other cities around the US over the course of the year.

The move further expands Amazon's recent push into logistics and delivery, following the company's leasing of aircraft and ocean freight equipment.

Amazon's creation of the new delivery service comes as the company pushes into new avenues of business including the acquisition of grocer Whole Foods and a newly-announced joint healthcare venture with JPMorgan and Berkshire Hathaway.

Shares of Amazon were up just less than 1% in early trading Friday.

Finance: Here are the 5 times Amazon has panicked investors in other companies

null

Amazon has repeatedly showed an uncanny ability to disrupt entire segments of the stock market with corporate announcements.

  • Amazon has repeatedly showed an uncanny ability to disrupt entire segments of the stock market with corporate announcements.
  • The most recent example is Amazon's new package-delivery service, which will compete with FedEx and UPS, and sent shares of the two companies lower.
  • It's a dynamic that's played out repeatedly in recent months.

Amazon's plan to debut a package-delivery service may have rocked competing companies like UPS and FedEx, but it's far from the first time Jeff Bezos & Co. have imposed their will on the market.

The company has made a habit out of crushing competitor market values with even the most basic of announcements, and their delivery initiative is just the latest example of that.

The reasoning is simple — Amazon has a ton of cash and an unparalleled logistical network, and when it looks poised to enter or expand its position in a market, traders get scared and bail out of existing holdings in other companies.

Amazon has done this so regularly, in fact, that it can be difficult to keep all the instances straight. That's where we come in.

Below you'll find a list summarizing recent examples of companies getting "Amazon'd" — the Business Insider-coined term for when a stock finds itself at the whim of the ever-expanding juggernaut.

February 2018 — Package-delivery stocks tumble after Amazon says it will launch its own competing service

Shares of UPS and FedEx traded sharply lower in the pre-market the day of this report. With Amazon planning to undercut the costs of the other delivery giants, investors in the companies started anticipating the negative effect of lower package volume.

Amazon's move pushes it further into logistics and delivery, following the company's leasing of aircraft and ocean freight equipment.

January 2018 — Healthcare stocks tumble after Amazon, JPMorgan, and Berkshire Hathaway announce collaboration to reduce costs for US workers

While the three companies weren't specific about what kind of enterprise they aim to create, noting only that they wanted to improve employee satisfaction while reducing costs, the announcement reverberated through the stock market.

Managed care and pharmacy providers absorbed the brunt of the selling, with companies including MetLife, Express Scripts, and UnitedHealth seeing large share drops that accounted for billions of dollars in lost value.

June 2017 — Grocery stocks slide after Amazon announces $13.7 billion acquisition of Whole Foods … and then again two months later after price cuts are announced

Amazon hit grocery stocks with a double-whammy of weakness in this particular instance, causing an initial drop after announcing its mega-acquisition of Whole Foods, then reigniting selling two months later after cutting prices.

The companies affected included Kroger, Sprouts Farmers Market, Target, and Walmart, which fell anywhere from 2% to 8% on the various reports.

June 2017 — Athletic apparel retailers slide after report that Amazon was going to partner with Nike

In June 2017, Goldman Sachs published a report speculating that Nike was "close" to commencing a direct relationship selling product on Amazon.com. That caused selling in both athletic apparel manufacturers, as well as retail chains.

The companies affected included Dick's Sporting Goods, Under Armour, and Foot Locker.

June 2017 — Pharmaceutical supply chain stocks decline after Amazon's purchase of Whole Foods spurred speculation it could eventually get into healthcare

Clearly the market was prescient in this instance, considering the aforementioned team-up between Amazon, Berkshire Hathaway, and JPMorgan, and the resulting selloff in healthcare stocks.

Back in June, when the Whole Foods acquisition was announced, CVS, Walgreens, Cardinal Health, AmerisourceBergen, McKesson, and Express Scripts all lost between 1% and 5%.

NDLEA Urges Gombe Traditional, Religious Leaders To Preach Against Drug Abuse

NDLEA

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Gombe State Command, has called on  traditional rulers and religious leaders to preach against drug abuse, especially among youths in the state.

The Commander of the agency in the state, Mr Aliyu Adole, made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Gombe on Friday.

Adole also advised politicians to stop giving hard drugs and other psychotropic substances to the youths.

He said the youths needed to be advised against drug abuse as the practice was not good for their health.

According to him, some youths got out of control when they took drugs, hence both religious and traditional leaders needed to advice them against the act.

He also called on elders and parents to inculcate good behaviour in youths in the state.

“So, everybody in the community should assist NDLEA and youths in Gombe State to get out of drug abuse,” the commander said.(

Court Dissolves 20-Year-Old Marriage Over Husband’s Refusal To Pay Child’s School Fees

An Idi-Ogungun Customary Court in Agodi, Ibadan, on Friday dissolved  the 20-year-old marriage between one Funmilayo and Babatunde Abiodun, over  the husband’s refusal to pay one of his children’s SSCE fees.

Funmilayo had approached the court for the dissolution of the marriage that produced four children over negligence of responsibility on the part of her husband.
In his ruling, the court’s President, Chief Mukaila Balogun, said that the evidence by both parties had proven that there was no more love in the relationship.
Balogun said the court was handicapped in resolving the dispute between the couple since both had agreed to path ways.
He dissolved the marriage and gave the custody of two of the four children to the defendant.

According to the president, the two children who are over 18 years of age should be in the custody of their father under the law.
He also ordered the remaining two children who are below 18 years to remain with the plaintiff.

The court ordered the defendant to be paying N8, 000 monthly to the plaintiff for the upkeep of the two children that would be in her custody.

The court also directed the defendant to be responsible for the school fees of the four children, henceforth.

Earlier, Funmilayo, 42, had told the court that she left her matrimonial home about five years ago due to maltreatment from her husband.

She said the defendant neglected his responsibility as a father, which made her to shoulder the payment of the children’s school fees, feeding and other responsibilities alone.

“My lord, I decided to divorce him because he had refused to pay the SSCE fees of our second born.

“I do not want him in my life again and I urge the court to compel him to be alive to his responsibility,” Funmilayo said.

The defendant, Abiodun, did not object to the dissolution of the marriage, but pleaded with the court to give him the custody of the four children.
Abiodun, 49, however, accused his wife of committing adultery and that he had tried to satisfy her to the best of his ability.

A zookeeper, Mustapha Adam, has been mauled by a lion which escaped from the Gamji Gate amusement park in Kaduna. He died early Wednesday, February 7, 2018, following an injury sustained in the neck.

The big cat has been lured back to its cage after a break-out according to many reports.

BBC Africa confirmed that a similar occurrence happened at Ibadan, Oyo State, in September 2017. A lion reportedly killed its caregiver while being fed.

Much earlier, another lion escape from its confinement located in the central city of Jos but residents came to no harm.

Entertainment: When One Dancer Is a Ghost in the Room

The four dancers initially looked like NSYNC.

There’s an uncanny sight at the New Museum these days: a ghost in a machine.

But that’s not the only enigma there. Tucked behind the first-floor cafe in the south galleries space, five dancers perform sequences of refined, minimal movement.

They recite text about dozens of subjects, including a list of exotic animals and their prices — the last one, “slave, 1,200 Libyan dinar,” lands like a punch — and even softly sing an aria from “Madama Butterfly.”

This labyrinth of dance and words, called “Co-natural,” is the brainchild of Alexandra Pirici, an acclaimed Romanian choreographer and artist who is exploring the relationship between inanimate bodies and real ones.

For “Co-natural,” which runs through April 15 and is performed during museum hours, Pirici has turned the loftlike gallery space into a landscape that performers share with a hologram of another dancer — remember our ghost? — to showcase a disembodied presence. The performance-exhibition also considers how bodies are connected to symbols and images from history. There are visual references throughout to the black power salute of a fist in the air and to Confederate statues and monuments.

“I was very quickly caught by how she evokes history,” Helga Christoffersen, an assistant curator at New Museum, said of Pirici. “This is not just a choreographer who is sequencing a dynamic set of movements. She is thinking about evoking presence across time.” Christoffersen, who programmed “Co-natural,” noted that the museum has a continuing history of looking at how performance is seen in context with visual art.

Pirici fits the space. She is more than a visual artist creating performance work, but a choreographer creating art that considers history and the way bodies are affected over time. This may sound complicated, but “Co-natural” — with its steady, undulating pace and purposeful timing — is a visceral experience.

Pirici is a collagist, braiding together movement, collective memories and text to create a meditative whole. “Basically, I started thinking about the body and the self,” she said after a recent rehearsal at the museum. “Where does presence begin and where does it end?”

For Pirici, this question extends into all the traces we leave behind, from online profiles to selfies. Like it or not, she said, we are fragmented beings. “The notion of the individual that has total control and free will, it’s false,” she said. “There are all of these technologies about putting things in a box.”

Boxes, you get the feeling, aren’t really Pirici’s thing. She started as a ballet dancer, beginning her training in the fourth grade in her native Bucharest, Romania. Starting in the ninth grade, she attended the Vienna State Opera Ballet School on scholarship. It was, she said, a conservative country and her time there overlapped with the rise of the extreme right.

The school was also conservative, yet it made traditions outside of ballet available to its students, from contemporary dance and flamenco to jazz. “Slowly I just started to understand that I didn’t want to close my world and continue with classical ballet,” she said.

Pirici returned to Bucharest and eventually discovered the National Dance Center, an institution for contemporary dance and performance. She began showing work there and experimenting. “I was looking for ways to move out of this situation where people come and sit down and look at something,” she said.

In 2011, she began placing live bodies in relation to public monuments. This series of what she called “sculptural actions” featured minimal movement and gestures, and that method has seeped into “Co-natural” when the performers enact poses from sculptures, including those of Lenin, Christopher Columbus and Robert E. Lee.

In Bucharest, she began the actions as a form of protest. While the dance center was struggling from a lack of funding, she said, a bronze sculpture, costing around 2 million euros (or around $2.5 million), was being installed nearby.

“We would produce the sculpture with our bodies in front of the actual sculpture as a sort of ironic gesture,” she said. “A message that if this is the only art that gets funded — this solid, ossified, official art — then we can also produce a version of that, which is even cheaper and more flexible and on a human scale.”

There was also a political dimension. She said she was often asked when showing or discussing the monuments work in Romania: “'What happens if you leave these images alone? Maybe they’re harmless.’ But I don’t think they are. I think there is a subtle way in which these images and our visuals surrounding works on us and shapes us and transforms us.”

Because there was so much discussion and debate in Eastern Europe about the removal of monuments related to communism after the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Pirici said, “When it started to happen in the U.S., I actually thought, wow that’s kind of late.”

Pirici doesn’t believe such monuments should be destroyed, but that instead they should be “recontextualized and placed somewhere else in a different setup,” she said. “This was also what I was doing with performers: OK, we leave this here, but what if I add someone on top of it? Or someone enacting a horse here? Maybe this changes what it signifies without having to tear it down.”

That idea of placing bodies next to objects comes into play in “Co-natural” with the hologram, a life-size image of the dancer Farid Fairuz. “It looks as if it’s in the space, but it’s a projection,” Pirici said. “But because it has no background, it feels as if it’s being displaced. It feels like a spirit.”

And there are advantages. “The biological body wants toilet breaks,” she said, “it gets tired, it decays.” A hologram, though, makes no demands.

In “Co-natural,” the hologram, shown throughout the day on one-hour loops, exists in relationship to the dancers, who perform for four hours at a time. (They do need bathroom breaks.) As the performance develops, dancers accumulate gradually and then disperse so that in the final hour only one remains.

The hologram “only exists in relation to the others,” she said. “You feel like he’s really here. It’s quite a big object. It shakes your mind.”

At times, the dancers also perform on a light-box platform that reminds Pirici of a laboratory table — she likes its science-fiction vibe. One aspect she highlights is choreography for the hands, which was inspired by the movement of factory workers.

In the end, Pirici is driven by the idea of exploring presence through connectivity.

“I’m not saying that live performance is coming to save us from the alienation of the image,” she said, with a laugh. “I’m trying to create an alliance. It’s about how live bodies and images influence and shape each other. You can reshape the images around you, and they will reshape you in turn.”

South African Opposition Call For Urgent Motion Of No Confidence In Zuma

Jacob Zuma

Two South African opposition parties on Thursday urged Parliament Speaker Baleka Mbete to schedule an urgent sitting of Parliament for the motion of no confidence in President Jacob Zuma to be debated and voted on.

South Africa cannot continue to be held in limbo while Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa, Zuma and their respective factions continue to fight over the terms of Zuma’s exit, Democratic Alliance (DA) leader Mmusi Maimane said.

“We need a swift resolution to this impasse as soon as possible,” said Maimane.

The call came after Ramaphosa said on Wednesday he and Zuma need more time to conclude their discussions on the transition of power and matters relating to Zuma’s position as the President of the Republic.

Maimane said he had consulted with the leadership of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) to push for an urgent anti-Zuma motion of no confidence on Feb. 13.

“As public servants, it is our duty to place the best interests of the country before party political interests,” Maimane said.

He said the DA and EFF flatly reject any amnesty agreement or special deal for Zuma to exit.

“He (Zuma) is not above the law, and must still face the 783 criminal charges illegally dropped over a decade ago and which the courts have now revived,” said Maimane.

Zuma’s fate remains unclear after Parliament on Tuesday postponed the State of the Nation Address amid growing calls for Zuma to resign.

Zuma was originally scheduled to deliver the State of the Nation Address (SONA) on Feb. 21.

The postponement of SONA was seen as an indication that Zuma might resign soon.

Since Ramaphosa was elected as ANC President in December, pressure has been mounting on Zuma to resign due to his alleged involvement in a series of corruption scandals.

Britain Says Wants To Save Iran Deal, Working To Address U.S. Concerns

Britain

Britain said on Thursday it was working with its partners to tackle U.S. concerns over a landmark 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and major powers, but said Tehran must avoid actions that threaten regional security.

“We and our European partners are absolutely clear. We want the deal to succeed,” Britain’s Minister for the Middle East, Alistair Burt, told a Euromoney Iran conference in Paris.

“We don’t want to see the JCPOA (deal with Iran) go down and are working with our European partners to mitigate concerns the U.S. may have to ensure it continues.”

Iran said on Thursday there was no link between its influence in the Middle East region and its 2015 nuclear deal with major powers that had now come under fire from the Trump administration.

Speaking on the sidelines of an economy conference in Paris, Deputy Foreign Minister, Abbas Araqchi, also accused Iran’s foes Israel, the U.S. and Saudi Arabia of fomenting tension in the Middle East.

“We have always fought against terrorism. Iran has always played a key role in bringing stability and peace to the region

There is no link between the (nuclear) deal and our role in the region,” Araqchi said.

The U.S. and Europe want Iran to curb its influence in the Middle East region.

Sports: 34-year-old NBA journeyman had a great reaction after being traded by the Cavs

Channing Frye

Channing Frye was caught in the crossfire on trade deadline day.

  • The Cleveland Cavaliers rebooted their entire roster just before the trade deadline, surrounding superstar LeBron James with a new crop of players.
  • Channing Frye was caught in the crossfire, with the Cavaliers packaging him along with Isaiah Thomas and the team's first round pick in a deal with the Los Angeles Lakers.
  • Frye had a great reaction to the trade on Instagram in his farewell message to the city of Cleveland.

The Cleveland Cavaliers were busy before the trade deadline, revamping their roster with deals that sent highly-touted recent additions, Isaiah Thomas, Dwyane Wade, and Derrick Rose, to new teams.

One player caught in the crossfire was NBA journeyman Channing Frye, who was packaged along with Thomas and the Cavs' first round pick, and sent to the Los Angeles Lakers in exchange for guard Jordan Clarkson and big man Larry Nance Jr.

Frye has played for six teams over the course of his 13 years in the NBA and is no stranger to the reality of NBA dealmaking. Thus, when he heard the news, he had a pretty good attitude about it, taking to Instagram to thank the city of Cleveland for the time he spent there.

"Just want to say thank you to all the Cavs fans, Cleveland, everybody. Business is business. I’m off to the Lakers — it happens," Frye said in his farewell Instagram post. Before signing off, he joked about his shooting in the previous night's game.

"I'm excited. Great young team. And word to everybody — don’t go 0-for-6 or they're gonna trade your ass!"

Frye joined the Cavaliers in 2016 and was a part of the team that came back from a 3-1 deficit to beat the Warriors in seven games. He'll have the chance to catch up with what remains of the Cleveland roster when the Cavaliers visit the Lakers at the Staples Center in March.
