Unai Emery Better Than Arsene Wenger, says Shkodran Mustafi

Arsenal

Shkodran Mustafi says manager Unai Emery has brought a level of tactical detail to Arsenal that was not present under predecessor Arsene Wenger.

Wenger stepped down as Arsenal boss after 22 years in May, having endured growing criticism and supporter hostility for his perceived limitations as a tactician and a coach, as well as for the Gunners’ underwhelming transfer record.

Emery has overcome a difficult start to lead Arsenal on a 14-match unbeaten run in all competitions, presiding over some thrilling football in the process, and Mustafi admitted he particularly appreciates his new manager’s meticulous style.
“For me personally the biggest thing was that he is someone who really knows what he wants from each player,â€ Mustafi said of Emery’s impact in a press conference to preview Arsenal’s clash with Portuguese giants Sporting in the Europa League. “He tells you exactly what he wants you to do, but at the same time he gives you freedom.

“When we don’t have the ball he tells you exactly where to stand and how to get the ball from the opponent… it is a good mix between freedom but still very disciplined and having the same plan in the whole team, and that is what we saw especially against Liverpool.

“I think we are very good attacking and that makes the defensive work easier. We are pressing higher up the pitch and that is making it easier to defend. And while we are attacking we are trying to prepare to be in the right positions.
Arsenal lie fifth in the Premier League after 11 matches, six points behind leaders Manchester City and just one point off a top-four place. They are also progressing well in the Europa League, having won all of their opening three matches to surge clear of Sporting at the top of Group E.
One more victory will be enough to all-but secure their place in the knockout stage, but Emery insisted that his team will not underestimate Sporting. The Portuguese giants have also made a positive start to the new campaign under Jose Peseiro, who replaced Sinisa Mihajlovic when the Serb was sensationally sacked just nine days after being appointed in June.
“They have very good players, Emery said. “They changed the coach but it’s a very big match for them in their thinking about getting the first position [in the group].

“We will go into the game with big respect for them.

Arsenal will be without Nacho Monreal (hamstring), who has returned to training with the squad but will not be risked against Sporting. Summer signing Konstantinos Mavropanos also remains sidelined with a groin problem, while there is still no return date set for Laurent Koscielny as the club captain continues his recovery from a torn Achilles sustained in May.

C. Ronaldo Is An Inspiration- Rashford

Cristiano Ronaldo

Manchester United starlet Marcus Rashford has revealed that ‘for me there’s no bigger inspiration in football’ than Juventus’ Cristiano Ronaldo.

Rashford is likely to feature for United against Juve in the Champions League on Wednesday, and the young England forward could come up against Ronaldo, who is considered one of the Red Devils’ best-ever players.

“The home game was a game with a lot of lessons. It was a game where we could have lost 2-0, drew the game 1-1 or won the game 2-1, he told his club’s official website, referring to the match at Old Trafford last month.

“I think in that game we left it a bit too late, but we learnt from it and we go again.

“There have been times when we’ve got it right and there will be times when we get it right again and times when we don’t, but we have to understand that it doesn’t always go to plan, and we have to be ready for that.

“I think it’s good to have the two games quite close together because the first game is quite fresh in a lot of people’s minds. I wouldn’t say it’s easier to prepare for it, but you feel ready to face it.

“The thing that is a massive eye-opener for me now is I remember when he first came his talent was arguably one of the biggest talents that we’ve seen at United for a long time; to have him and Wayne [Rooney] in the same team was amazing when you look back.

“But the way he’s sustained his career and even improved year or year is just amazing.

“People don’t do that at his age, people are usually heading towards the end of their career and their level starts going down a little bit, but he’s just gone up and up and up.

“For me there is no bigger inspiration in football. I could speak for a lot of young players and United fans that watched the team when he was here and the majority of us have followed him as he’s moved on in his career and that’s what special about United.

“Once you play for this club you become part of this family even if you move on. There is always something that remains in your heart, you could see that when he returned [to Old Trafford] from our fans.

“When you play against a player like that you have to respect his qualities but at the same time you have to play your game and you can’t show fear to that type of player.

Dead man wins election in the US

A Republican, Dennis Hof, has won an election to Nevada’s State Assembly three weeks after his death in the United State.

Nevada State law and GOP officials encouraged voters to cast their ballots for the 72-year old brothel owner in order to stop Democrats from winning the seat.

During the poll declaration, Hof had 68.3% of the vote to defeat his Democrat rival Lesia Romanov who polled 31.7%.

“He’s not going to make it to the promised land with us but we hope he’s watching from the great beyond. He died quietly in his sleep,” Hof’s campaign manager Chuck Muth said at one of the brothels he operated in Crystal, Nevada.

Muth also stated the election day was “bittersweet”.

The strip club owner, who ran five legal brothels in Nevada, during his campaign, dubbed himself the “Trump from Pahrump” in reference to the town where he lived in Nevada.

He was found dead by porn star Ron Jeremy and a friend who went to wake him for a meeting, hours after his weekend-long 72nd birthday party.

Nevada Police, however, said they did not suspect foul play at the time of his death and no one that was with him the night before noticed any signs of ill health.

Hof’s campaign was based on deeply conservative ideals including a hard-line policy on immigration and expansion of gun rights.

He also fought against outlawing brothels.

Another Republican will be appointed to serve in his place after results showed the late brothel owner received over 60% of the vote.

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie Want ‘Private’ Trial During Custody War Over Their Six Children

The lingering divorce and custody battle between erstwhile Hollywood super couple, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, will go to trial next month after both parties failed to agree on the future of their six children despite two years of being separated.

READ: Angelina Jolie Accuses Brad Pitt Of Failing To Pay Adequate Child Support

Attorneys to both movie stars have been in serious negotiations since September 2016, after Jolie filed for divorce, 2 years into their marriage, citing irreconcilable differences and “the health of the family” after 12 years of being together.

The former partners’ custody dispute comes down to the fact that Jolie wants sole physical custody of their six kids, ranging in age from 10 to 17 while Brad says he wants to share physical custody.

The trial scheduled for Dec. 4, will likely behind closed doors and not at a public courthouse, according to the wishes of the two estranged couple.

But the couple could still reach an agreement out of court as a source familiar with the situation but not authorized to speak publicly said both sides “are still working together to find an out-of-court settlement.â€

In California’s public Family Courts, most proceedings are open to the public except certain issues involving children, when the courtroom can be closed.

Atletico gain sweet revenge by cruising past Dortmund

Atletico Madrid avenged their Borussia Dortmund drubbing from a fortnight ago and revived hopes of going through top of Champions League Group A by beating the German side 2-0 at the Wanda Metropolitano on Tuesday.

Dortmund handed Atletico their heaviest defeat under Diego Simeone with a 4-0 victory 13 days ago but this contest was almost a mirror image, the hosts in control from start to finish.

Saul Niguez and Antoine Griezmann scored a goal in each half to complete a win that puts Atleti five points clear of third-place Club Brugge with two games to play, and on the brink of the Champions League knock-out stage.

First place is also back in sight, with Atletico and Dortmund each on nine points, even if Simeone’s side have the slightly tougher task of playing Brugge away in their final fixture.

“We wanted to get one back on them after the first game,” Saul said. “It was tough to take and it might have gone the other way two weeks ago. Tonight was a bit of revenge for us.”

After losing in Germany, Atleti were also held at struggling Leganes in La Liga on Saturday and this result, without the injured Diego Costa, Diego Godin and Koke, will do wonders for morale.

The only set-back was defender Jose Gimenez being forced off at half-time with what the club confirmed was a thigh strain.

“The team responded,” Simeone said. “We played as a team and when everyone buys into that, you have your identity. You can feel what you do together and today the boys showed that.”

Dortmund, who sit top of the Bundesliga, host Bayern Munich on Saturday and they lacked the same verve they showed two weeks ago.

“They dominated us today,” Dortmund coach Lucien Favre said, before brushing off the suggestion this could hang over them against Bayern.

“It’s just a defeat. It can happen.”

Resistance broken
England’s Jadon Sancho was handed his fourth consecutive start for the visitors, his longest run in the side this season. After a bright start, the youngster faded and was replaced late in the second half.

The first 30 minutes was a battle for the pace of the game, with Atletico trying to keep it fast and frenetic while Dortmund aimed to kill momentum at every opportunity.

Angel Correa twice went close but otherwise Atleti’s authority came to little in the way of chances until the 32nd minute.

Saul began the move by playing left to Filipe Luis and finished it too, sliding the ball goalward where Manuel Akanji lashed it into his own net. In between, Filipe’s pass had been brilliantly dummied by Correa.

Their resistance is broken, Dortmund lost their way and were hanging on at the end of the half. Thomas Partey’s drive grazed the crossbar and soon after Saul skewed wide when left open at the back post.

Simeone was convinced they deserved a penalty when Griezmann’s effort was parried and the incoming Saul was taken out by Lukasz Piszczek.

Dortmund’s best chance came early in the second half when Paco Alcacer nipped in after a Francisco Montero slip. Alcacer fired across goal but with such force that Raphael Guerreiro, five yards out, hardly saw the ball as it flew off his head and over the bar.

Atletico waited for their moment on the counter-attack and when it came in the 80th minute, they pounced. One pass out of defence found Gelson Martins, who helped it forward to Partey. He played inside to Griezmann, who muscled through and poked the ball past Roman Burki.

Simeone turned, his fist pumping. Dortmund’s hopes of a comeback were dashed and Atletico were back in with a realistic chance of topping the group.

Senate Probes Claim Govt Intervention Fund Spent On Buhari’s Re-Election

The Senate has ordered an investigation into an allegation that a government special intervention project fund meant for ordinary Nigerians is now being used as a campaign tool for the re-election of President Muhammadu Buhari.

Senate Minority Leader, Biodun Olujimi, said on Wednesday that the fund had been “politicised and its beneficiaries were asked to submit details of their permanent voter’s cards.

For over thirty minutes, the Senate plenary became chaotic after Mrs Olujimi made the allegation.

She said officials disbursing the fund are circulating forms on which recipients are asked to write their names, gender and details of their PVCs.

She said the such forms are accompanied by another from Access Bank containing details of payment.

Displaying the two forms, Mrs Olujimi urged the Senate to investigate the matter.

“Right now the funds are being used for political reasons and they are being dispensed and given freely to those people who can bring up their PVCs and signed several copies and the forms are with me, she said.

“One of the forms is here with me and it is being disbursed by the special intervention body. They are now using the fund that is meant for all Nigerians for political reasons.

She said raising one of the forms: “This one has ‘I stand with Buhari’ on it and it has a place where your PVC will be written with your gender and an attachment from Access Bank where money will be disbursed to you.

“There is no corruption greater than people using our collective fund to maintain a political party. There is a need for a committee to be set up to look into this issue.

First to show intention of speaking was the Senate Leader, Ahmed Lawan, who was promptly shouted down by opposition senators.

The chamber was soon thrown into confusion as both camps — ruling and opposition lawmakers — argued with senators move around the chamber.

“Tinubu has seen you, opposition senators chanted at some APC senators, referring to the former Lagos governor and influential APC leader, Bola Tinubu.

Mr Lawan was finally given time to speak. He said the social intervention programme of this administration is “computer-based, very transparent….

He was again cut short by senators who booed him. “They have seen you, they have seen you, some lawmakers shouted.

Again, the chamber was thrown into another spell of rowdiness.

In a speech intermittently interrupted by yelling, Mr Lawan praised the SIP as a non-partisan initiative while showing support for investigation of Mrs Olujimi’s allegation.

The lawmakers finally adopted Mrs Olujimi’s prayer.

The Senate President, Bukola Saraki, said an ad-hoc committee will be set up to investigate the allegation.
