Brendan Galloway Joins Luton From Everton

Everton defender Brendan Galloway has joined newly-promoted Championship side Luton Town on a free transfer.

The versatile 23-year-old becomes Luton’s fourth signing of the summer, ending a five-year spell at Goodison Park and joining up with boss Graeme Jones, who was on Everton’s coaching staff when Galloway made his debut.

The former England Under-17 and Under-19 international joined Everton in 2014 after impressing for MK Dons and made 15 first-team appearances the following season, but he only played 10 league games during brief loans at West Brom and Sunderland.

Galloway said: “I’m really happy to finally get it over the line and I can’t wait to get started.

“I really enjoyed working under Graeme at Everton. The sessions were very exciting and very challenging for the players, and he got the best out of a lot of us.

“I’m really excited for the new project here. There’s a real feel-good factor – everyone at this club is positive.”

The Zimbabwe-born defender, who has more than 50 career appearances in all competitions, will play alongside former team-mates Callum McManaman and Lloyd Jones at Kenilworth Road.

Jones said: “We gave Brendan his debut in the Premier League as a teenager and he did very, very well. He stepped in for Leighton Baines and certainly didn’t let anyone down.

“It is a really good opportunity and a good time to take him.

“He’s lightning quick, competent on the ball and he really loves to get forward. He’s 6ft 1in and a good age, and he’ll add great competition to the squad in that area.”

Women To Head Top EU Institutions For First Time

Two women have been backed by the EU’s leaders to head the European commission and European Central Bank, breaking with more than 60 years of male dominance at the top of the bloc’s institutions, According to Theguardian.com.

After three days of tortuous negotiations, Germany’s defence minister, Ursula von der Leyen, received the support of heads of state and government to replace Jean-Claude Juncker as president of the commission in Brussels. And the French managing director of the International Monetary Fund, Christine Lagarde, will move to Frankfurt to take over from Mario Draghi as the first female president of the ECB.

Von der Leyen, 60, who speaks fluent English and French and studied at the London School of Economics before taking a medical degree, is now the European commission president designate. She will only formally become the first female head of the EU’s executive branch if she wins the support of a majority of MEPs.

France’s president, Emmanuel Macron, proposed her to lead the commission after Hungary, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Italy rejected the candidature of the former Dutch foreign minister Frans Timmermans over his previous criticism of populist governments which fail to protect the independence of their judiciary.

Von der Leyen, a gynaecologist who only came to politics in her early 40s, regularly emerges in opinion polls as one of Germany’s most popular politicians.

The mother of seven introduced improved maternity and paternity benefits as Germany’s family affairs minister and drove forward boardroom gender quotas.

She has been working to increase funding for the country’s armed forces in her most recent government role although she has been mired in controversy over the awarding of contracts and has faced criticism about gaps in military readiness.

Von der Leyen was brought up in Brussels as the daughter of Heidi and Ernst Albrecht, the latter of whom was a senior German politician who worked in the commission in the 1950s. She has in the past spoken of her aim of a “United States of Europe – along the lines of federal states like Switzerland, Germany or the US”, and has backed a future European army or “army of Europeans”.

On Brexit, she has fully supported the commission’s position on the Northern Irish backstop, and criticised the “hollow promises” of those who campaigned for the UK to leave the EU.

The 28 heads of state and government, of which only five are women, were under pressure to break the male monopoly on the top jobs although there was never any certainty this would happen.

The debate over the future leadership proved extremely difficult, with the leaders talking through the night on Sunday, and needing to meet again on Monday and Tuesday to find the right gender, geographical and political balance for the five top jobs soon to be vacant.

Belgium’s prime minister, Charles Michel, 43, has been chosen to replace Donald Tusk as president of the European council. Spain’s foreign minister Josep Borrell, 72, will become the EU’s high representative for foreign affairs.

The European parliament is expected to elect its own president in a vote in Strasbourg on Wednesday, with the main political groups likely to support the former prime minister of Bulgaria, Sergei Stanishev, 53, an MEP for the Socialists and Democrats political group, as part of a delicate division of jobs among the parties.

Von der Leyen, who has worked alongside the German chancellor, Angela Merkel, since 2005, is a member of the centre-right Christian Democratic Union and pan-EU European People’s party.

Lagarde was the French finance minister in President Nicolas Sarkozy’s Republican administration.

Michel, who is in a caretaker role while Belgium’s politicians seek to negotiate a new federal government following May’s election, is a member of the Renew Europe political group formed out of a combination of the former liberal group in the parliament and French MEPs from Macron’s La République En Marche party.

Dalai Lama Sorry For Saying A Female Successor Would Have To Be “Attractive”

The Dalai Lama apologized Tuesday for repeating remarks that if the next dalai lama were a woman she should be “attractive.”, According to Nbcnews.com.

In an interview with the BBC, published June 27, the Dalai Lama was pressed on a comment he made in 2015 that if he were followed by a female dalai lama, she would need to be physically appealing.

“He reaffirmed his belief that beauty matters as much as brains. ‘If a female Dalai Lama comes, she should be more attractive,’ he told me while laughing,” the BBC article said.

The Dalai Lama, who will turn 84 this week, told the BBC that inner and outer beauty are important in Buddhist literature, and stressed that he supported women’s rights.

A statement posted to the Dalai Lama’s website Tuesday acknowledged that the comments had “caused disquiet.”

“His Holiness genuinely meant no offence. He is deeply sorry that people have been hurt by what he said and offers his sincere apologies,” the statement said.

“His Holiness consistently emphasizes the need for people to connect with each other on a deeper human level, rather than getting caught up in preconceptions based on superficial appearances,” said the statement. “This is something everyone who has the chance to meet with him recognizes and appreciates.”

The Dalai Lama first made the remark about a woman dalai lama “as a joke” to the editor of Paris Vogue in 1992 because he was “working with a team whose prime focus was the world of high fashion,” according to the statement. “It sometimes happens that off the cuff remarks, which might be amusing in one cultural context, lose their humour in translation when brought into another.”

“For all his long life, His Holiness has opposed the objectification of women, has supported women and their rights and celebrated the growing international consensus in support of gender equality and respect for women,” said the statement. “His Holiness has frequently suggested that if we had more women leaders, the world would be a more peaceful place.”

The spiritual leader of the Tibetan people, who in 1959 fled to India, where he lives as a refugee, also drew criticism for his comments to the BBC about migrants and refugees, but the statement on his website said he was “misinterpreted.”

“European countries should take these refugees and give them education and training, and the aim is return to their own land with certain skills,” the Dalai Lama said during the interview. “A limited number is OK, but the whole of Europe [will] eventually become Muslim country, African country — impossible.”

The statement released Tuesday said the Dalai Lama “appreciates that many of those who leave their countries may not wish or be able to return,” and “also understands the uncertainties and difficulties of those in countries where refugees and migrants make their new homes.”

As a refugee himself, the Dalai Lama believes the ultimate goal for most refugees is to return to their home countries.

During the BBC interview, the Dalai Lama also shared his strong opinion of President Donald Trump, saying the president’s time in office has been marred by a “lack of moral principle.”

Still, the Dalai Lama, who has met with every president since George H.W. Bush, said he would be open to meeting with Trump, but he has never been asked.

House Committee Files Lawsuit Over Trump Tax Returns

A House committee has filed a lawsuit in federal court seeking President Donald Trump’s tax returns, According to Macon.com.

The lawsuit was filed Tuesday by the Ways and Means Committee against the Treasury Department and Internal Revenue Service.

The committee says it doesn’t have to explain its reasons for seeking Trump’s tax return information. It says the administration has defied a subpoena for the documents “in order to shield President Trump’s tax return information from Congressional scrutiny.”

The committee says it’s investigating tax law compliance by the president, among other things.

Kamala Harris Overtakes Elizabeth Warren In National Poll

The survey – taken after the debates, polling 449 registered voters June 29– 30 – shows Harris in third place with 11 percent support. Warren falls behind by 2 points with 9 percent support. Biden, however, maintains his status as the frontrunner with 33 percent support. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) comes in a distant second with 15 percent support. Mayor Pete Buttigieg falls into fifth place with 6 percent support, followed by Beto O’Rourke with 4 percent and Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ) with 2 percent, According to Breitbart.com.

The margin of error is +/- 3.1 percentage points

The results are most significant for Harris, who gained 6 percent since that specific poll was last taken two weeks ago.

The Hill-HarrisX poll follows the release of CNN’s national poll Monday, which also showed a significant Harris surge, moving her to second place with 17 percent support. It also showed Biden’s lead narrowing by a significant margin, coming in with 22 percent support.

Harris had a number of breakout moments during the second Democrat debate, hitting Biden over his praise of late-segregationist senators and questioning his former positions on busing. Notably, though, Warren and Harris – both of whom are neck and neck – were separated from each other in the contests.

Need to legalise marijuana in Nigeria

Tribune Online
Need to legalise marijuana in Nigeria

SERIES of thought-provoking articles have appeared in the media calling on the Federal Government to legalise Indian hemp, many of these comments suggested very good reasons why hemp should be legalised while a few others proposed that as a result of its negative implications and moral as well as religious considerations, government should not give any legal backing to Indian hemp.

Ruga: South East Govs strike deal with herdsmen

However, I think that whether it is legalized or not irrespective of whatever moral or religious implication it generates, it is actively in practice in Nigeria at the moment, albeit,  illegally. This is why I want to proffer reasons why it is important to legalise hemp in Nigeria.

All over the world, marijuana has generated so much controversy as a result of its medical uses. The moralists in Nigeria hold that legalizing it will encourage immorality among the youths but I believe it is important for Nigeria to overlook personal tendencies and set our society on the right track by legalizing hemp.

Russia Condemns Alleged Israeli Airstrikes On Syria

Russia condemned on Tuesday alleged recent Israeli airstrikes in Syria, saying such attacks “grossly violate Syria’s sovereignty.”, According to Gulf-times.com.

Russia has managed to maintain close relations with Syria and Israel despite tensions between those neighbouring countries throughout the Syrian civil war as Russia’s military supports the Syrian state.

Six Israeli warplanes coming from Lebanese airspace conducted a series of missile strikes on Syrian territory on Sunday night, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement. Sixteen people were killed in the strikes, including a small child, the Russian ministry said.

“This Israeli attack was the largest action of its kind since May 2018,” the statement said.

“This escalation evokes extreme concern,” it said, adding that such actions, “grossly violating Syria’s sovereignty,” have the potential to destabilize the region. Israel has not confirmed conducting such an attack.

Senior military advisers from Russia, Israel and the United States met in Israel last week for talks focused on improving the security situation in the Middle East, particularly regarding Syria.

Hong Kong Deplores Vandalism At Parliament

Hong Kong’s authorities deplored on Tuesday the vandalism at the Parliament by rioters, as continuation of protests from several weeks ago, According to Plenglish.com.

A local government spokesman condemned that crowds of mask- and helmet-wearing demonstrators took advantage of the commemoration on Monday of Hong Kong’s return to China to proceed with violent actions against a public institution.

He said it is a condemnable fact because it constitutes a serious violation of laws, an alteration of social order and an affront to the interests of the southern demarcation, after expressing support for the police in the handling of the case under criminal charges.

In similar terms, the offices of the Council of State of Hong Kong and Macao made a statement of the matter, and the President of the Parliament, Andrew Leung, when announcing the cessation of all work in the parliamentary building.

According to the deputy, the police evaluate the affectations and until now detected the loss of hard disks of several computers.

The Central Government of China considered the incident as outrageous and intolerable, and expressed full support for the response from the Hong Kong authorities in order to restore stability and peace in the city.

As Turks Clash With Syrians, A Dangerous Spark Is Lit In Istanbul

A Pandora’s box appears to have been opened in Istanbul after an anti-Syrian riot broke out on Saturday with rumours spreading that a Syrian refugee boy had verbally abused a 12-year-old local girl, According to Middleeasteye.net.

An angry crowd gathered in the Kucukcekme district of the city comprised mainly of young men, who gathered around the area’s Asik Veysel street, attacking shops with Arabic signboards.

Police used tear gas and water cannon to disperse the rioters.

On Sunday evening, a similar scenario was under way in the same place, with police again having to intervene to disperse the crowd.

On a visit to the the area on Monday morning, nothing seemed extraordinary except a noticeable police presenece.

But when Middle East Eye came to the stores owned by Syrian refugees, there were shattered window glasses, broken signboards and nervous, watching eyes.

‘I saw stones and I believe I saw guns too’
The first Syrian restaurant MEE entered was undamaged.

“When we heard the shouting we closed the shutters,” said the owner, who declined to speak by stating: “I am sorry brother. I really do not want to get into any trouble.”

Halid al-Hamed, another restaurant manager, said: “We were working as usual. But on Saturday night, after 10.30pm, about 70 people attacked my place.

“Everything happened so quickly. I saw stones and I believe I saw guns too. I closed the shutters after two of my customers got slightly hurt.”

Hamed, a 34-year-old originally from Aleppo, said: “Just a rumour caused all of this mayhem. We were not expecting such serious things.

“Maybe somebody did something wrong, but we did nothing wrong. A hand has five fingers and none of them are the same. As so, not all the Syrians are same.

“My restaurant has been closed since Saturday. Today, I’ll clean the mess up and open the place again tomorrow. I am not going anywhere but I am truly upset.”

Another business owner from Aleppo, who preferred to remain anonymous, said: “From what I heard they attacked my market after 1.30am. I am not leaving my market because I have no other choice.

“But I will be more cautious. I was always closing my shop around midnight to 1am. But from now on, I’ll close the place at 9.30pm.”

The owner said he was not afraid of his neighbours, but he was not sure about the ones who came from other neighbourhoods.

According to residents, 15 to 25 percent of the population of the neighbourhood is Syrian, but since Syrian-owned places are generally located on side streets and not highly visible, several may have escaped possible damage.

Growing agitation
According to the United Nations Human Rights Council, Turkey currently hosts about 4 million registered refugees, 3.6 million of which are forcibly displaced people from Syria.

More than half a million Syrians are registered as living in Istanbul, according to the Turkish interior ministry.

Further south, the cities of Gaziantep, Sanliurfa and Hatay have each taken in hundreds of thousands of refugees, corresponding to 21, 21 and 26 percent of their population respectively, according to the interior ministry.

In Kilis, 80 percent of the population consists of Syrian refugees, the ministry says.

With Syria’s conflict showing no signs of ending soon, after eight years of war agitation is growing in some quarters over the refugees’ continuing presence.

Many Turkish citizens are welcoming, however, and some in Istanbul expressed surprise at the sudden violence.

Ramazan Olmez, a Turkish Istanbul resident who works in the construction industry, said: “I’ve lived in this neighbourhood since 1989, and I know the faces of the people who live and work around here.

“That night I saw different faces. Their ages ranged from 16 to 25, youths, who looks like they were being orchestrated by the same source.

“I can say that somebody organised them, took them here and set them against Syrians. They didn’t seem to me to act as a conscious crowd.”

Olmerz said the first rumour he heard that day was that a Syrian man raped a 12-year-old.

“I didn’t believe it. I smelled the provocation,” he told MEE.

“My two tenants are Syrian. I trade with Syrians. They posed no problem against me until this day. That’s why I didn’t believe such an exaggerated allegation.

“Our nation wouldn’t buy such provocations. Our nation is patient and hospitable.”

Olmez is optimistic and believes no racist attack or political game will prevail against a wider Turco-Syrian friendship.

However, he is keen to stress that attention should be paid to the timing of the incidents, right after the Istanbul local election.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if the provocateurs behind the whole attacks turns out to be the supporters of our new mayor, who wants to oust the Syrians with a passion,” he said.

‘This is Turkey. This is Istanbul’
Ekrem Imamoglu, who became the new mayor of Istanbul after a controversial re-run election just nine days ago, says he counts the “Syrian issue” as one of the most urgent problems of the city.

At a new conference for foreign media on Friday, he stated that economic hardships, traffic congestion and the refugee issue were the three major problems of the city.

He said the “refugee problem affects the society from its deepest roots” and he would specifically work on this problem by implementing a three-step roadmap.

Imamoglu said the first phase would be to launch a registry system for women and children in order to better help them.

Arguing that “distributing the Syrian refugees all across the country” was a mistake, the new mayor said the second step was to develop a national policy in order to pursue a more “supervisory policy” towards refugees.

Blaming other countries for remaining silent on the “tragedy” in Syria and its environs, he said: “I am determined in carrying this issue to all over the world, drawing their attention and urging them to cooperate and show solidarity against the human tragedy there, rather than focusing on the oil of Syria.”

Imamoglu said the third and final step was to help the refugees return to their homelands.

The lack of a detailed description as to how to implement the three steps seems to indicate that the refugee issue may stay among Imamoglu’s top three list for a while.

Moreover, in dramatic contrast to his measured statements on Friday, and following the events of the weekend, the new mayor on Monday made a series of controversial remarks on the refugee issue that have drawn widespread condemnation.

Describing to the interviewer on the Haber Global TV channel the use of Arabic lettering in the city, Imamoglu said: “You can not read the signboards in some quarters. This is Turkey, this is Istanbul”.

The mayor’s words worringly chimed with the attacks on Arabic signboards at the weekend, which became the first targets of the vandalism.

Describing the events over the weekend, he said: “Escalations occurred in some quarters. Our citizens are restless, our citizens are on the streets because they couldn’t find a place of safety. They are saying ‘I will find the cure by myself’.”

“We will not be an administration which does racist acts. But this situation cannot carry on like this,” he added. “You can not change the demography [of the city] at a stroke. That was a mistake.”

Other statements by Imamoglu included: “A refugee must be isolated in a camp if it’s nescessary, or he must be re-educated” and “Some of our people lost their jobs. Employment rates have dropped down because of informally working refugees.”

When challenged by interviewer that his remarks were dangerous, Imamoglu said he disagreed.

We need to say ‘stop’ at some point
Back at Asik Veysel street, controversy was still raging over the veracity of the rumours that allegedly sparked the weekend violence.

A 61-year-old Turkmen, who came from northern Syria to Istanbul after the war erupted, said being a guest in Turkey was difficult and refugees want to keep on good terms with their hosts as much as possible.

“If such rumours reflected the slightest part of a truth, we would apologise,” the man, who wished to remain anonymous said. Instead, he said a conflicting rumour had spread among Syrians.

“They say a group of local people tried to enter a Syrian wedding ceremony. The wedding guests resisted them and the whole riot began,” he said.

For a 22-year-old Turkish pastry shop worker, who also wished to remain anonymous, the anti-Syrian rumours struck a chord.

“Yesterday it was my neighbour’s daughter, today it will be my daughter, tomorrow it will be yours,” he said.

“We need to say ‘stop’ at some point. We needed to show a reaction. That is all I can say.”

Come up with policy in response to decent work, social protection challenges, G20 tasks labour ministers

Come up with policy in response to decent work, social protection challenges, G20 tasks labour ministers

Leaders of the G20 countries have charged their labour ministers to come up with policy that would adequately respond to the challenges of decent work and social protection.

Besides, they have expressed commitment to an inclusive society that boosts the participation of women, youth and people with disabilities.

They asked their labour ministers, who will meet in Matsuyama in September, to foster adequate policy responses to the challenges to decent work and social protection created by new forms of work, particularly those driven by technological innovation.

PDP moves to investigate secret ballot desecrates democracy ― Oshiomhole

ILO Director-General, Guy Ryder said that, “the G20’s focus on achieving labour market inclusion during this time of rapid change within the world of work is encouraging, and sets the right course for policies that support equitable, sustainable policies that support decent work.”

He said that the leaders’ communiqué, “compliments the Centenary Declaration on the Future of Work, that was adopted by the ILO’s member states only a few days ago.”

While new forms of work create opportunities for job creation, the leaders asked their ministers to exchange good practices that will help generate policy options that support both decent work and social protection.

The communiqué also restated the leaders’ commitment to promoting decent work and eradicating child labour, forced labour, human trafficking and modern slavery, including in global supply chains.

The communiqué stressed that gender equality and women’s economic empowerment are key drivers of sustainable and inclusive growth.

The leaders noted the report of the ILO and OECD, Women at Work in G20 Countries, on progress made in reaching the Brisbane Goal to reduce the gender labour force participation gap by 25 per cent by 2025, and committed to accelerating their efforts and to evaluating progress on the basis of the annual ILO/OECD report.

The leaders highlighted the burden of unpaid care work, borne disproportionately by women, and condemned violence, abuse and harassment against women at work.

The courts’ annual long vacation

Tribune Online
The courts’ annual long vacation

vacation , criminal justice law, Zamfara

Fellow Nigerians, please permit me to do a little house cleaning, through this medium, this week. I will like to talk to the Honourable Judges of the Bench and my learned gentlemen of the Bar. I do hope that I have your consent in this regard, which I have already appropriated, even without your input! Never mind, it is just an internal memorandum to the Bench and Bar. Now, let us proceed.

All over the country, superior courts of record, from the High Court to the Supreme Court, will embark on their annual long vacation, starting from July to September or August to October, as the case may be. This is covered by most rules of the courts, that of Lagos State being Order 49 Rule 4(d), which defines “… the long vacation being the period beginning by the middle of July and ending on a day not later than 42 working days as the chief judge may by notification in a public notice appoint.” Although most judges will be on official vacation, some courts will still remain open to attend to very urgent cases, especially criminal cases that may involve custody. I don’t want this year’s vacation to be the usual annual ritual of formal absence from duty, which is the reason for this piece.

AFCON 2019: Buhari shocked over Super Eagles unpaid allowances, Lalong says

The judges

They are human beings with flesh and blood, they need sleep as the rest of us do, they go to the market, they wash their clothes, they have families to attend to and some still have children in school to cater for. But they have to sit in court everyday, from 9.00 a.m. to about 4.00 p.m. daily, some of them writing in long hand. Let me use Lagos State where I practice as a case study. I know of a judge who became sick only by reason of not experiencing sunlight, having to leave home so early to beat traffic, go into court and sit on cases all day, and then close very late, by which time the sun would have set already. I do not want to go into personal details, but the truth is that a lot of the judges nurse varying degrees of ailments, on account of the hazardous nature of their job, sitting in one position all day, all week and for months on end. Reading and studying volumes of records and addresses, analysing cases and preparing and delivering rulings and judgments on them all. So, the long vacation has been built into the courts’ calendar to give room for rest.

For the Judges, it should not just be about rest and fun, but also personal introspection. How have we fared so far? Are we just delivering judgments without justice? Has it just been all of technicalities bereft of substance? Have we now improved the law more than we met it? What is the efficiency score card? And the utility value of the efforts? My Lords must take stock and be self-accountable. We must improve ourselves to improve public perception, which is presently at the lowest ever, though largely instigated and influenced by powers outside the courts for other motives. Can we take part of this time to reflect upon our cases more deeply? Do the judgments that we churn out everyday satisfy the expectations of our people concerning justice? Or are we just working to the answer in satisfaction of NJC returns? In which particular area of law have we made appreciable difference? What innovation have we brought to the judicial table, the whole of this year? My Lords, Bairaman J.S.C. did not cite any authority in the landmark case of Madukolu v Nkemdilim, that has become the bible of jurisdiction, since 1962. Is that the way we want to leave it, just to be quoting and adopting previous decisions, without any substantial impact or improvement?

What about the health factor? Can we take out time to do a comprehensive medical check-up? Since early diagnosis is key to recovery, why not just walk into the lab and check! Judicial work is both mental and physical and very tasking and energy sapping. Can you still cope? In what area can we improve on knowledge? Technology is taking over virtually all aspects of human existence. Are you compliant? Can anything be done in this regard? How can we use technology to improve justice administration? In some courts now, judges direct their registrars to compile a database of all lawyers who have cases in their courts, in order to open effective channels of communication, through emails, whatsapp, etc. What courses are we attending to improve justice delivery? After all these My Lords, please do family, family and family. They are the ones that you have truly, so please use this time to bond with them. Don’t ever leave them behind from those jollification trips this time around. Please create time to bond with your people.

May I also take out time to talk to the heads of the courts? Can we plan our conferences such that they will fall into the long vacation and save litigants and lawyers the trouble of adjournments of cases during busy sessions? This time should also be deployed effectively to renovate the chambers of the judges, to change their carpets, tiles, furniture, computers and other tools of business. Let us make the working environment conducive and friendly. Let us attend to the dilapidated courtrooms, some of which are as hot as the oven, without any ventilation for fresh air. It is most embarrassing that there are no conducive public conveniences in most of the courts. Yet, we bring lawyers and litigants to remain in the court premises for about eight hours without adequate facilities for their welfare. Let the entire court compound be cleaned and fumigated, the lawns and gardens properly dressed and the entire courts repainted to wear a new look for the coming legal year. Afterall, President Muhammadu Buhari has granted financial autonomy to the judiciary to be in charge of its finances, and we have since jerked up the filing fees and penalties, the costs have gone up and probate fees have all become prohibitive. So, why should things still remain the same, when we are paying through our noses? And most courts have no Bar Centre, where lawyers can take peppersoup and sip drinks. Why? Should it all be about legal arguments and dry advocacy?

Added to the above is the issue of welfare packages for judicial officers and judicial staff. You cannot fight corruption with poorly paid people. So, we need to review the salary of judges and the judicial staff. They are just too poor and abysmal. Indeed, beyond the prestige of office (which does not really exist anymore), some judges are suffering, with some worrisome cases of judges driving themselves to work!

The lawyers

Properly speaking, the long vacation is more for the lawyers, who all joggle between different courts, all year round. It is the same lawyer who will appear before the Magistrate’s Court, the High Court, the Federal High Court, the National Industrial Court, Election Petitions Tribunal, Tax Appeal Tribunal, SEC Tribunal, Sharia Court, the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court, round the clock, as all these courts have different times and schedules. But for the long vacation, by July ending, most active lawyers are already fatigued and experiencing decline in productivity. So, what does the lawyer do with the long vacation? Chief Gani Fawehinmi, SAN, once told me that in his practice days, he uses the long vacation to read the entire practice books, such as Evidence Act, Rules of Court, Criminal Procedure Laws and such other common practice books and journals that are daily tools in the courtroom. Between now and the time of the Annual Bar Conference, take a course in computer studies, in arbitration, in business or other law related matters.

Then review your cases altogether, to tackle all pending assignments. Take stock of the past one year. How has it been? Beyond the big fat briefs, how many pro bono cases have you attended to? What about the members of staff, are you deliberately owing them arrears of salary and now planning to travel abroad with your family for holiday? Haba! What is the general impact of your practice on society at large? How have you contributed to the anti-corruption crusade? Will you, now in good conscience, stop misleading/extorting your clients in the name of bribing judges, when you don’t even have any communication channel with My Lord at all? Can you get back to making this legal profession truly noble, by practicing it in the best tradition that we inherited from our leaders gone? Can you embrace civility and decorum in the conduct of cases, to be transparently honest and tell your client the true position of the law, so that if he is the wrong party he can make things right, instead of frivolous applications to prolong the case?

Alternative dispute resolution is fast gaining grounds as a veritable means of conflict management and every lawyer should embrace it and commend it to their clients. It is faster, better and even cheaper. And then you must plan for the NBA-AGC along with your colleagues from your office. Forget about the politics, the NBA is indeed a useful organ for all lawyers in many ways and we should endeavour to be part of all activities of the Bar. Having done all these, then now is the long vacation proper. You must shut down completely, away from cases, clients and briefs, even telephones. The body must be allowed to refresh itself. If God who created us could find time to rest, then you have no excuse at all. You don’t have to travel abroad if you cannot afford it or if other priorities would not permit for now. Take madam and children to some secluded places, even in Nigeria here and just have fun, at least for a week or two. I have read cases of lawyers collapsing in court, some in the midst of arguments of cases. Please take a break so that you do not break.

I verily believe that with these few words of mine, I have been able to convince and not confuse my fellow Nigerians, that judges and lawyers deserve the annual long vacation indeed.

UN Watchdog Confirms Iran Has Breached Nuclear Deal Stockpile Limit

The United Nations nuclear watchdog confirmed on Monday that Tehran has broken a stockpile limit for low-enriched uranium allowed under a 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and world powers, a move that could add to friction with the United States.

Iran’s total stockpile of low-enriched uranium on Monday exceeded the 300-kilogram limit allowed under the deal, International Atomic Energy Agency spokesman Fredrik Dahl said.

His statement followed comments by Iranian officials saying they had breached the limit because Europe has not done enough to mitigate biting US sanctions. Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said the move was “reversible” but warned that Iran can continue to reduce its commitment to the agreement if Europe does not take necessary action to uphold the other side of the deal, Iran’s official Islamic Republic News Agency reported.

Iran had repeatedly threatened to cross the limit laid out in the deal for its stockpile of low-enriched uranium unless it received some relief from sanctions, arguing that it has been constrained by the accord but unable to reap the benefits of it since the United States pulled out last year.

Lebanon Demolishes Syrian Refugee Homes

Lebanese military units demolished at least 20 refugee homes early on Monday, a group of international aid agencies said, warning that they feared more demolitions would follow and that thousands of people including children could be affected.

The army did not immediately comment on the aid agencies’ statement, but a security source said the military had been carrying out checks to make sure refugee dwellings were sticking to regulations according to Reuters.

Lebanon is toughening its enforcement of rules governing the roughly 1 million Syrian refugees who constitute about a quarter of the tiny country’s population.

The small concrete huts in which many refugees live to break rules against building semi-permanent structures in their informal camps, something some Lebanese fear would lead to their lasting settlement in the country.

Russia Reacts To U.S., Israel’s Strikes On Rival Targets In Syria

Russia has responded to recent U.S. and Israeli strikes that targeted two rival factions in Syria, where all three foreign powers have engaged in separate military campaigns in pursuit of national interests.

In a statement published Monday, U.S. Central Command announced that it targeted Al-Qaeda in Syria’s leadership in strikes the previous day near Aleppo, stating that those targeted were “operatives responsible for plotting external attacks threatening U.S. citizens, our partners, and innocent civilians.” Jihadi groups associated with Al-Qaeda were known to have a presence in northwestern Idlib and surrounding provinces such as Aleppo, and the Pentagon warned that the region “remains a safe haven” for such militants.

The U.S., however, has rarely intervened in this corner of the war-torn country. Rather it was Moscow that often supported Syrian efforts here. Asked if the U.S. strikes could be the result of Friday’s meeting between President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the G-20 summit in Osaka, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said that, while he had “no details” on what happened, he could say “there is definitely no connection here,” as the state-run Tass Russian News Agency reported.

Washington and its regional allies actually backed a number of the groups fighting as part of the 2011 rebel and jihadi uprising against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. Since 2015, however, the Pentagon has largely focused its efforts on supporting Kurdish fighters against the Islamic State militant group (ISIS) as the jihadis and various militant and rebel groups also faced off with Syrian troops and allied militias, who were targeted overnight as well.
