6 Asian Countries Launch Intelligence Sharing Pact To Counter Terrorism

Six South-East Asian countries on Thursday launched a broad intelligence-sharing agreement to counter terrorism and other security threats.

Defence ministers from Indonesia, Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Singapore gathered on the resort island of Bali to formalise the initiative proposed by Indonesia and dubbed “Our Eyes’’, state news agency Antara reported.

“Each country has different ways of dealing with threats, so there’s a need for synergy and coordination to gather strategic information,” Indonesian Defence Minister, Ryamizard Ryacudu, was quoted by Antara as saying.

Under the initiative, each of the five countries will create an intelligence-sharing unit.

Senior officials in charge of their respective units will then meet on a regular basis to share the intelligence.

In 2017, siege of the town of Marawi in the southern Philippines by militants loyal to the Islamic State extremist group unsettled countries in the region.

Indonesia has been hit by several deadly attacks by Islamist militants in recent years.
