2018 UTME: JAMB to conduct Mock test Feb 26

JAMB ends sales of exam forms today

The board’s Head, Media and Information, Dr Fabian Benjamin said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) on Sunday said the much anticipated conduct of the 2018 Mock Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) would now hold on Feb. 26.

The board’s Head, Media and Information, Dr Fabian Benjamin said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.

According to him, a total of 245,753 of the  1,652,795 candidates that registered for this year’s  UTME are expected to write the test.

We are happy to announce to the public that the board has concluded arrangement for the conduct of the mock UTME, slated for Monday, February 26

“This is irrespective of the ongoing strike embarked upon by members of non-academic  unions of federal universities nation wide.

“Candidates will soon be informed on when to print notifications for the examination and in addition, notifications will be sent through e-mails and text messages on the schedules of their examination,” Benjamin said.

He explained that the examination was expected to be hitch free because the board had successfully reduced incidences of malfunctioning of computers by electronically integrating the systems to see their functionality and effectiveness through link tests.

“What this means is that, at the end if the exercise, whatever system that is not seen will not be used for the mock examination.

“The 2018 exercise sold a total of 1, 966,918 candidate generating profiles.

“In previous examinations this number of candidates would have paid for the forms but through our efficient and effective system of ensuring that candidates do not waste resources, we decided to introduce the profile generating regime.

“By this method, candidates will first have to   generate personal  profiles before proceeding to obtain pins, in between which they are open to deciding whether to go ahead to pay for the registration documents or otherwise,” Benjamin explained.

NAN reports that the main UTME is expected to hold nationwide from March 9 to March 17

Lai Mohammed: No imminent war, crisis in Nigeria – Minister

PDP, looters planning to rubbish Buhari’s achievements - Lai Mohammed

Mohammed said that contrary to negative narratives being read in the social media and the internet, there was absolutely no cause for alarm in Nigeria.

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed says there is no imminent war or crisis in Nigeria and the country is in competent hands under the leadership of President Muhammadu Buhari.

The Minister stated this during an interactive session with a cross section of Nigerian community and members of staff of the Nigerian Embassy in Madrid, Spain.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the Minister is in Madrid for the signing of Agreement between Nigeria and the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) on the hosting of Conference of UNWTO Commission for Africa.

The Conference of the African Ministers of Tourism and global tourism players with the theme “Tourism Statistics, a Catalyst for Development” is scheduled for June 4 to June 6 in Abuja.

Mohammed said that contrary to negative narratives being read in the social media and the internet, there was “absolutely no cause for alarm and the nation is not in any form of imminent war”.

He said, specifically, that the challenge of herders and farmers clashes in the country was neither ethnic nor religious but as a result of global environmental and economic realities.

Mohammed stressed that the development was not new to the country and the government was committed to addressing the challenge.

He said some people were, however, for their personal agenda and gains, trying to bring in religious and ethnic sentiments to what was happening.

“Do not be surprised that the naysayers have invested billions of Naira to promote instability, ethic wrangling and misunderstanding.

“But I want you to put your minds at rest that there is no war in Nigeria, there is no imminent  war, there is no ethnic battle or religious conflict

“The Nigeria I left behind is a country where people, irrespective of where they come from, live together in harmony and government is alive to its responsibilities.

“We are not saying that there are no problems at all in Nigeria, there is no country where there is no problem including Spain here.

“A couple of month ago, we know that separatism raised its ugly head here in Spain and the whole world watched the development.

“There is nothing new happening in our country, it is a reflection of our plural values and we will continue to address them,” he said.

Mohammed said that the Administration was on the right path delivering on its electoral promises especially in revamping the economy, tackling insecurity and fighting corruption.

He said that in assessing the performance of the Administration people should do so in the context of what it inherited in 2015 and where the country is now.

“Today our foreign reserves has gone up from 24 billion dollars to 42 billion dollars and this is the highest level in the last four years.

“Inflation has been brought down in the last months.

“Before we came, Treasury Single Account (TSA) was not implemenred and people put money in different accounts, we were losing about N108 billion to bank charges

“Today, I am glad to say that with the implementation of TSA, we save monthly N24 billion from charges and about N120 billion from ghost workers,” he said.

The Minister said that because of the discipline of the administration, it got the country out of recession and the Nigeria stock market had been adjudged one of the best performing in the world.

The minister  disclosed that as at December last year, the Federal Government has given about N1.9 trillion as bail out to states.

He said many of the states had been so poorly managed that they could not pay the salaries of their workers which necessitated the intervention of the federal government.

The Minister told the meeting that the Administration’ agricultural revolution is moving Nigeria close to self-sufficiency in many staples, especially rice.

He said the Home-Grown School Feeding Programme had created jobs for 61,352 cooks, and it is providing 6.4million school children in 33,981 schools across 20 states with one meal a day.

Mohammed said the administration inherited power generation of 2690 MW even when over 16 billion dollar had been spent on power reforms.

He said with the efforts of the government, power generation has increased to 7,000 megawatts and the dministration’s is embarking on a massive infrastructural renewal.

Mohammed said that Boko Haram had been massively degraded and the suicide attacks by the hitherto emboldened group were act of defeat and cowardice.

He said the group leader, Abubakar Shekau had to disguise as a woman to escape when the heat was too much for him from the military in Sambisa.

Fielding questions from the audience, the Minister assured that the government would address issues of Diaspora voting, illegal deportation of Nigerians among others.

The host of the event and the new Nigeria Ambassador to Spain, Mrs Susan Folarin thanked the Minister and his entourage for the visit and holding the interactive session.

John Oyegun: 34,826 PDP members join APC in Niger

APC not involved in appointment of dead board members - Oyegun

Among the defectors are the state Deputy Chairman of the PDP, Alhaji Aminu Yusuf, former Speaker of the state Assembly, Alhaji Adamu Usman, a former Attorney General, Alhaji Abdullahi Wuse among others.

Chief John Oyegun, National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC),  on Saturday received 34,826 members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Niger, who moved to APC.

Among the defectors are the state Deputy Chairman of the PDP, Alhaji Aminu Yusuf, former Speaker of the state Assembly, Alhaji Adamu Usman, a former Attorney General, Alhaji Abdullahi Wuse among others.

Oyegun said in Minna at a rally to receive the defectors that Nigerians must shun sentiment and support the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari to set the nation on a new path of growth and progress.

He said that the country require “people of principle’’ to help fight for the success of the programmes of the APC.

APC needs sincere soldiers as leaders, people who are ready to join the fight, because God entrusted Buhari to us to salvage the nation and its economy,” he said.

He therefore urged the new APC members to support President Buhari in the efforts to restore the economy through the revitalisation of agriculture and solid minerals sectors.

Oyegun noted that already, government support to agriculture had helped to drastically bring down rice importation.

The APC national chairman stressed that the Buhari administration had also raised power generation to 7,000 megawatts and that the figure would go up by 50 percent after the completion of the Mambila hydro power project.

He noted that the increase in power supply would help boost industrialisation and job creation in the country.

Alhaji Aminu Yusuf, PDP state Deputy Chairman, said they joined the APC to assist in developing the state.

By the time elections are over, you don’t talk about parties anymore, instead you talk about development of the state.

“The party approached me to come and join them and assist the government build the state. We are coming with our skills and experience to assist the government in developing the state,” he said.

Tech: Snap CEO Evan Spiegel sold $50 million in Snap stock — his first sale since the IPO (SNAP)

Evan Spiegel and Miranda Kerr

The Snap CEO is worth $4.5 billion.

  • Snap CEO Evan Spiegel sold $50 million in Snap stock.
  • It's his first stock sale since Snap's IPO.

Snap CEO Evan Spiegel sold 2,675,600 shares of Snap last week at a price of $18.71 per share, a transaction netting him just over $50 million.

The transaction was disclosed in a filing with the SEC, which you can read here.

It's Spiegel's first official public stock sale since Snap's IPO last March. He previously promised not to sell any of his stock during 2017.

The sale was conducted according to a pre-arranged sales plan, and was only 1% of his holdings. He still retains control of the company and its primary product, Snapchat, as does his co-founder Bobby Murphy.

Spiegel's fortune is worth roughly $4.5 billion.

Earlier this week, he defended Snapchat's recent controversial redesign at a conference in San Francisco.

"We'd been thinking about the redesign for a really long time because we were frustrated that when you looked at the [app], both sides looked the same," Spiegel said. "We're excited about what we're seeing so far. Even the complaints we're seeing reinforce the philosophy. The frustrations we're seeing really validate those changes."

Politics: 'To every politician who is taking donations from the NRA, shame on you': Survivors of the Florida school shooting rage against gun lobby

Alessandra Mondolfi yells, “No more" during a protest against guns on the steps of the Broward County Federal courthouse in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on February 17, 2018.

Wednesday's deadly shooting at a high school in Florida has sparked protests in support of stricter gun control in several cities across the US.

  • Wednesday's deadly shooting at a high school in Florida sparked a nationwide uproar against lax gun-control regulations.
  • Survivors of the Florida shooting and activists demanded a range of measures, including a ban on assault weapons like the AR-15, which was used in the Florida shooting.
  • A nationwide student walkout against gun violence is planned for next week as gun-control advocates call on Congress to do more.

Survivors of the Florida school shooting lashed out at lawmakers, gun advocates, and even President Donald Trump on Saturday at a fiery rally demanding immediate gun-control measures in the wake of Wednesday's massacre.

Hundreds of people gathered in Fort Lauderdale to mourn the 17 lives lost in nearby Parkland and demand Congress to do more to prevent future mass shootings.

"No more guns! No more guns!" the crowd chanted.

Students, teachers, and local officials took turns giving impassioned speeches before the crowd, simultaneously celebrating those who died and blasting inaction from lawmakers in Washington.

One of the Florida shooting survivors, Emma Gonzalez, a Stoneman Douglas student, excoriated Trump and the National Rifle Association.

"If the president wants to come up to me and tell me to my face that it was a terrible tragedy and how it should never have happened and maintain telling us how nothing is going to be done about it, I’m going to happily ask him how much money he received from the National Rifle Association," Gonzalez said. "But, hey, you wanna know something? It doesn't matter because I already know: $30 million."

Gonzalez also slammed Trump for a recent tweet that some perceived as placing blame on former classmates of suspected gunman Nikolas Cruz for not contacting authorities. She demanded Trump explain how much he believed America's gunshot victims were worth.

"If you don't do anything to prevent this from continuing to occur, that number of gunshot victims will go up and the number that they are worth will go down. And we will be worthless to you," she said. "To every politician who is taking donations from the NRA, shame on you."

Demanding action

Gonzalez has been far from the only student at Stoneman Douglas speaking out against gun violence. David Hogg, a senior at the school, has been particularly vocal.

"Some of our policymakers and some people need to look in the mirror and take some action because ideas are great, but without action, ideas stay ideas and children die," Hogg said on CNN Thursday.

Rep. Ted Deutch, a Democrat who serves Florida's 22nd congressional district, also attended the rally and said the House of Representatives will propose legislation next week that would ban semi-automatic assault rifles, like the one used in Wednesday's shooting.

Deutch implored students at Stoneman Douglas and others throughout the country to continue speaking out.

"It is just not acceptable to ever think that it should be commonplace in our country for people to send their kids to school in the morning and not know if they’re going to come home at the end of the day," Deutch said.

He also laid out four other measures for Congress to consider: preventing people on the no-fly list from purchasing firearms, subjecting every gun buyer to a full background check, banning high-capacity magazines, and increasing the minimum age requirement to buy a rifle to 21.

Protests spread across the US

The tragedy in Parkland has sparked pro-gun-control rallies beyond Florida.

A day after the shooting at Stoneman Douglas, gun control advocacy groups occupied the Massachusetts State House, demanding action on a bill that would prevent individuals who pose extreme risks to themselves or others from possessing a firearm.

In San Diego, more than 100 people gathered in support for a ban on assault weapons. Hundreds more convened outside NRA headquarters in Virginia, criticizing the influence the gun rights lobby has on politicians.

On Friday, a group called 'Student Walkout Against Gun Violence,' which appears to have been launched in response to the Florida shooting, said it is planning a nationwide walkout sometime next week in schools across the country to demand action.

Gun control remains a hot-button political issue on Capitol Hill. Though mass shootings tend to elicit increased support from lawmakers in the immediate aftermath of the massacres, that support usually dies out in the following weeks and months.

Sen. Chris Murphy has been one of the more outspoken lawmakers on gun control. Amid the Florida shooting, Murphy lashed out at his colleagues on the Senate floor for failing to act.

"This happens nowhere else other than the United States of America," Murphy, the senator from Connecticut, said. "This epidemic of mass slaughter — this scourge of school shooting after school shooting. It only happens here not because of coincidence, not because of bad luck, but as a consequence of our inaction."

Samson: 3 great lessons all Christians can learn from this powerful man’s walk with God

3 great lessons Christians can learn from Samson’s life

Improve your spiritual life by applying the following from the story of this Biblical character.

The Bible is filled with so many great, inspiring characters.

One of them is definitely Samson, a man born with powerful abilities whose life story is embedded with interesting lessons.

Here are three great lessons we can all learn from this powerful man’s walk with God.

We are born with a divine purpose

There are many who argue that we make our own path but Samson’s story knocks this outta the park.

From the beginning, we see a special gift was placed in the unborn son of Manoah and his wife, way before he was even born (see the book of Judges, chapters 13–16).

This is made evident with a visit from an angel, who directs the parents not to cut the child’s hair as it is the source of his strength. A supernatural strength put in Samson for him to eventually rescue Israel, God’s people, from the Philistines.

Just in case, this predestined purpose is not just for this powerful man.

This explains Paul’s words in Ephesians 5:15–17, which reads: “Be very careful, then, how you live,” Paul admonished, “– not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is.”

Now, that we have seen what occurs before our birth, let's move right on to what happens next.

Godly purpose attracts opposition

After you are born with this divine calling, the next thing you need to know is that divine purpose does not mean smooth sailing.

Nope, it does not. As we all know, Samson’s life right to the moment of his death was filled with opposition.

At every turn, he faced antagonism from the Philistines, the woman he loved, Delilah and even sometimes himself.

For us Christians, we know that opposition is not necessarily a bad thing. In fact, the Bible encourages us to face them with pure joy (see James 1:2).

We are also told to expect it in John 15:20; “‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also.”

You can only successfully deal with them by relying on your creator

Right about now, you may be feeling downcast, wondering why life has to be hard.

You can take comfort in the fact that you do not have to face any opposition by yourself.

During the final moments of Samson’s life, we see God come through for him in Judges 16:28–29.

It reads: “…Then Samson called to the LORD and said, “O Lord GOD, please remember me and please strengthen me just this time, O God, that I may at once be avenged of the Philistines for my two eyes.”

“Samson grasped the two middle pillars on which the house rested, and braced himself against them, the one with his right hand and the other with his left.”

This supernatural display of strength took out more people than he had killed throughout his entire life. See what happens when God steps in?

If, by any chance, you are not convinced that you can rely on God, Matthew 28:18–20 says, “Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.

“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you  always, to the very end of the age.”

In simpler words, ‘go, dominate and conquer any opposition because I am with you every step of the way.’

Thanks to a command like this, we can boldly say, “I can do all this through him who gives me strength” (Philippians 4:13).

Samson’s story is proof that challenges are inevitable but we can relax because, like him, we are backed by someone who has “overcome the world” (John 16:33).

Samson comes to the big screen

This amazing story is being brought to life in the new feature film called “Samson.”

Fun Fact: The lead role is played by actor Taylor James, who had a divine “vision” years before he got the part. This led him to keep his hair and workout a lot.

During a recent episode of “Pure Talk”, he said: “I had a vision as an actor and a person a few years ago to grow my hair and to maintain a certain physical appearance. It was my guiding light.”

The movie started showing in theatres from February 16, 2018.
