#2019Debate: This is how Vice Presidential candidates performed during televised debate

#2019Debate: How Vice Presidential candidates performed

Pulse takes a look at the performances of the 5 vice presidential candidates who participated at the debate, ahead of the 2019 general elections.

On Friday, December 14, 2018, the Vice Presidential candidates of the PDP, APC, ACPN, ANN and YPP starred in the first of several televised debates ahead of the 2019 general elections.

The debate participants were Umma Getso (YPP), Ganiyu Galadima (ACPN), Khadijah Abdullahi-Iya (ANN), Peter Obi (PDP) and Yemi Osinbajo (APC).

Venue of the debate was the Transcorp Hilton Hotel in the nation's capital city of Abuja.

This is how the 5 participants fared during the debate put together by the Broadcasting Organisation of Nigeria (BON) and the Nigeria Elections Debate Group (NEDG).

1. Khadijah Abdullahi-Iya (ANN)

She started nervously, but grew in some confidence as the debate wore on.

Not much can be said of where Abdullahi-Iya stands on some of the issues raised during the debate because she offered little by way of policy standpoints and proposals.

However, she chipped in a few strong points while countering some of the policies of the Buhari administration being touted by Osinbajo.

Abdullahi-Iya's best point has to be when she said local governments should be able to control their own resources and pay a tax to the center.

She had a good closing remark only because she read from a prepared speech. It was the one moment where she sounded like ANN presidential candidate, Fela Durotoye.

Otherwise, she stuttered, mangled and forgot her lines most of the time.

A good debate prep would put her in the mood for subsequent outings. Surely, one to watch out for in the future.

2. Ganiyu Galadima (ACPN)

He had a night to forget.

Galadima certainly wasn’t ready for this debate and wouldn't have been ready if an extra 5 hours were added to the session.

He started nervously, picked up nervously and ended nervously. He was also all over the place, didn’t deliver a solid point worthy of recall and fumbled his lines.

Perhaps, his only stellar moment of the debate was when he reminded everyone that the head of the ticket, Oby Ezekwesili, is perhaps one of the best economic minds around.

Overall, Galadima did his party and ticket little favours here.

3. Peter Obi (PDP)

He started like a house on fire, reeling out statistics and proffering solutions to a host of economic challenges plaguing Nigeria at the moment. He certainly had Osinbajo in his crosshairs.

However, a host of Obi’s numbers didn’t add up following some fact checking.

The PDP candidate announced that Nigeria has 2 million cars plying the roads. The registered number of vehicles in Nigeria, according to the nation’s statistics bureau, is 11 million.

Obi also said Nigeria’s trade with Africa stood at 9 percent. The correct figure is 15 percent. According to the Afriexim Bank, intra-Africa trade is around 15 percent.  In 2016, intra-African exports made up 18 percent of total Nigerian exports according to the Brookings Institution.

Obi’s claims that 87 million Nigerians are unemployed was also a stat pulled from outer space. 34 million Nigerians are unemployed according to latest data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS). 87 million is about the total number of Nigeria's labour force.

Nigeria’s foreign direct investment for 2015 wasn’t $21bn, like Obi told everyone. Nor did it fall to $12bn in 2017.

According to NBS capital importation reports, Nigeria’s total imported capital stood at $9.6 billion in 2015.

Some of Obi’s claims on Nigeria slipping down the global competitive index in 2018, were not correct as well. The World Economic Forum report states that Nigeria rose on the index by 10 places in 2018.

However, Obi floored Vice President Osinbajo on the petroleum subsidy debate. His argument that Nigeria is “subsidizing inefficiency is right on the money when you consider that the subsidy regime on petrol hasn’t significantly impacted on purchasing power or improved the economy in any way, shape or form.

Nigeria is better off finding ways to refine its crude oil locally and fixing the economy instead of paying trillions in subsidy annually.

4. Umma Getso (YPP)

She started with plenty of butterflies in her tummy. By mid-debate however, those butterflies were largely perching on the doors of the hallway.

Getso spoke relatively well on fiscal restructuring, the YPP’s plan to stimulate innovation through a venture capital  fund, while touting Kingsley Moghalu’s economic credentials whenever she had the opportunity to do so. She was deferring to him most of the time, a pointer that they both sing from the same hymn sheet.

She was flat on other policy discussions however, preferring instead to repeat her bare-bone points.

On the night’s evidence, however, Getso is a plus for the Moghalu ticket, warts and all. Considering her age (She's only 37) and inexperience on the political scene, we should cut her a bit of slack perhaps.

5. Yemi Osinbajo (APC)

He was on the defensive throughout as expected. Brilliant on the delivery and elocution–a forte for him.

However, like Obi, Osinbajo made some wild, exaggerated claims. When he said Nigeria currently produces a chunk of the rice it consumes, not a few Nigerians were left raising puzzled eyebrows. Millions of Nigerians would tell you for free that local rice is almost never on the market shelves when they go shopping.

"We are producing 90 percent of the rice that we consume and we are importing only 2 percent of what we used to import", Osinbajo said without wincing. This statement is definitely not supported by current realities.

It is also not true that the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway was practically abandoned under Goodluck Jonathan. There were a few attempts to fix the road in the preceding dispensation, although not enough to get any real work done.

Osinbajo’s attempts to defend the petrol subsidy regime as some kind of panacea to economic improvement, was also weak and scattergun.

But the vice president delivered some sucker punches of his own when he called out Obi for talking about how Nigeria was destroyed when it was in fact the opposition PDP that supervised some of that destruction; and when he flattened Obi who posited that fighting corruption doesn’t really matter.

“You can’t leave your shop and be chasing criminals, Obi said to applause from what was largely an unruly audience.

“If you allow criminals to steal everything, there will be no shop, Osinbajo clapped-back to more applause.

Touche.

Good outing overall from Osinbajo as you would expect from a born talker.

The presidential debate will take place on Saturday, January 19, 2019.

Jon Kyl Leaving Senate At End Of The Month

WASHINGTON — Sen. Jon Kyl (R-Ariz.) placeholder term to fill the seat of late Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) is over as it barely started.

Kyl told Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey in a letter delivered to the governor’s office Thursday that he felt it would be good for a replacement senator to make a fresh start with the 116th Congress beginning in January.

“Thank you for appointing me to the U.S. Senate to fill the vacancy created by John McCain’s death,” Kyl wrote, according to the Arizona Republic. “It has been an honor and a privilege to again serve the people of Arizona.

“When I accepted your appointment, I agreed to complete the work of the 115th Congress and then reevaluate continuing to serve,” he added. “I have concluded that it would be best if I resign so that your new appointee can begin the new term with all other Senators in January 2019 and can serve a full two (potentially four) years. Therefore, I will resign from the U.S. Senate effective 11:59 p.m. EST December 31, 2018.”Kyl, 76, the former Senate minority whip, served in the upper chamber from 1995 to 2013 and had been lobbying for a D.C. law firm since leaving Congress. He returned to the Senate in September, after McCain’s Aug. 25 death from brain cancer. The choice was praised by Cindy McCain.

At the time of the appointment, Ducey said he hoped he’d get a commitment from Kyl to serve longer than the end of the year.

Under Arizona law, Gov. Doug Ducey (R) named McCain’s successor to serve until the 2020 election. The winner next November will serve the remainder of McCain’s term, until the 2022 election. With Kyl leaving, Ducey would make another appointment to serve until the election.

Though working behind the scenes to shepherd Supreme Court picks, Kyl had not indicated he’s a Trump loyalist, saying in a February interview that the president is a “phenomenon that has to be dealt with.â€

“I don’t like his style. I think it is boorish. I think he’s own worst enemy. He could be much more effective if he were more politique, more diplomatic — of course, that’s one of the things that people like about him — the fact that he isn’t that way. But I think there’s a happy medium,â€ Kyl said.Kyl said at the time of his appointment that he doesn’t have a relationship with Trump. “Sometimes his desire to jump into the middle of a fight or create a fight… can be detrimental to what he’s trying to achieve,” he said, standing by the “boorish” comment.

Since arriving in the Senate this time around, Kyl has been the lead sponsor on three bills, one to lower the estate tax.

Ducey could appoint Rep. Martha McSally (R-Ariz.), who lost her bid for the seat of retiring Sen. Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.) in November. McSally got 47.6 percent of the vote compared to 50 percent for Rep. Kyrsten Sinema (D-Ariz.).

The Washington Post reported Thursday, though, that McSally’s “stock has fallen in the eyes of the governor” in part due to a post-election memo that Ducey saw as the candidate not owning up to her mistakes, blaming her loss on external factors including strong Democratic fundraising, a geographic disadvantage and voter hostility toward President Trump.

Politics: 2 prominent Conservative MPs want Theresa May to work with Jeremy Corbyn to deliver Brexit

Jeremy Corbyn and Theresa May, Brexit

'Cross-party discussions' would help deliver a Brexit deal, meaning Theresa May must talk to Labour, the SNP, and Plaid Cymru, senior Tories say.

  • Theresa May should seek cross-party discussions and work with the Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn to deliver Brexit, senior Tories say.
  • Labour won't reportedly be keen to hold talks.
  • This is because the opposition is seemingly split between wanting to call a no-confidence vote in the government, and waiting for May's Brexit deal to fail by itself.

Theresa May must work with Jeremy Corbyn if the Prime Minister is to get Parliament's support for her Brexit deal.

That is according to senior Conservative MPs, who have said "cross-party" discussions will be needed to ensure Britain does not end up with a delayed Brexit, or leave the European Union with no deal. A compromise, which could include a second referendum, may be needed to receive the backing of opposition parties like Labour, the SNP, and Plaid Cymru.

Earlier this week, May lost the support of more than a third of her MPs as she attempts to lead a minority government through the most difficult parliamentary process any prime minister has faced for decades. This means it is harder than ever before to get her Brexit deal approved by Parliament.

She has since returned to the European Union to make legal changes to her Brexit deal, but this was rejected by leaders in Brussels.

The former education secretary Nicky Morgan and the former minister for skills Nick Boles now say it is essential that the PM seeks talks with Corbyn and other party leaders to garner support.

"After this week’s events in Westminster and Brussels, the only way the prime minister gets any kind of deal through is with cross-party support and proper discussions to secure that now need to start," Morgan told The Independent.

Boles said: "Next week she must open cross-party discussions, and if Corbyn won’t play ball, talk to SNP, Plaid Cymru and backbench Labour MPs."

He added: "What sort of compromise could secure the additional 120 votes she needs? Norway-plus? Second referendum? Permanent customs union? Or some combination?"

Labour, of course, may not be keen to work with May. According to The Telegraph sources, the Shadow Brexit secretary Keir Starmer and the deputy Labour leader Tom Watson want Corbyn to "table a no-confidence in the Government before Christmas."

Those closest to Corbyn, though, reportedly believe that timescale risks uniting a fractured Conservative party. Instead, Labour could wait for May to bring her Brexit deal back to Parliament until it calls a no-confidence vote.

Either way, discussions with May do not seem to be on the Labour agenda.

LASG to fast-track pension payment to retirees with terminal ailments

pension

THE Lagos State Government says it will henceforth fast-track the payment of gratuity and pension to retirees living with terminal diseases.

Mrs Folashade Onanuga, the Director-General of Lagos State Pension Commission (LASPEC), said this on Friday in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.

She spoke on the sidelines of the 15th Retirement Benefits Documentation Seminar organised for workers in the state public service.

“The targeted employees are those who will retire between January and June 2019,’’ she said.

Onanuga, however, urged the affected group of workers to submit their medical reports alongside other documents while processing their gratuities and pensions.

She stressed that the state government had resolved that such retirees must collect all their gratuities “with their own hands rather than through their next of kin.

“Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode has resolved to give such retirees preferential treatment so that they can take care of their health,’’ she said.

Speaking on pension payments, Onanuga said that the state government had funded its employees’ Retirement Savings Accounts (RSAs), under the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS), with N166 billion in the last 11 years.

“The total contributions remitted to Pension Fund Administrators (PFAs) from April 2015 to October 2018 was N91 billion.

“In the last 38 months, from August 2015 to October 2018, the state has paid Accrued Pension Rights (APRs) totalling N40.93 million to 9,982 retirees.

“The APRs of N74.58 billion has been paid to 17,391 retirees since the commencement of the payment of retirees’ entitlements in 2010,’’ she said.

The director-general underscored the state government’s commitment to protecting the interests of its retired workers, adding that this was the rationale behind its payment of huge pension entitlements since the inception of CPS in the state.

Besides, Onanuga said that the state government was planning to launch a health insurance scheme for its workers, adding that plans were underway to extend the scheme to also cover retired civil servants.

“This is because health means wealth; we want to ensure that our retirees live healthier and enjoy their retirement.

“The Lagos State Government has the interest of both its workers and ex-workers in mind, she added.

Nigeria suffered major infrastructural deficite in PDP`s 16 years of rule – Osinbajo

Ma-taimakin Shugaban Ƙasa -Osibanjo- zai kai tawagar gwamnoni da ʼƴan siyasa zuwa bikin ɗaurin Aure.

He stated this on Friday in Abuja at the 2019 Vice Presidential Debate organised by the Nigeria Election Debate Group in collaboration with the Broadcasting Organisation of Nigeria (BON) and Civil Society Organisations.

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo says Nigeria suffered major infrastructural deficite in the 16 years of the Peoples Democraty Party’s (PDP) rule.

He stated this on Friday in Abuja at the 2019 Vice Presidential Debate organised by the Nigeria Election Debate Group in collaboration with the Broadcasting Organisation of Nigeria (BON) and Civil Society Organisations.

He added that corruption is the major course of the country`s current challenges which must be tackled head-on.

The said the country`s Gross Domestic Product had consistently gone up under the All Progressives Congress (APC) led administration which he added was building the country`s infrastructure, especially the road and rail sector.

While acknowledging issues of poverty in the county, Osinbajo said the administration’s social investment programmes were put in place to address poverty in the country.

He said the administration was investing heavily in power distribution to address problem of electricity in the country

Dr Peter Obi, the PDP Vice Presidential Candidate, however, said that job creation remains the key to addressing insecurity and other anti-social vices in the country.

He decried inequality, poverty and high crime rate in the country which he said was caused by unemployment.

Obi stressed that the country`s main problem is its economy which he said is under the preview of the Vice President, adding that he would do all it takes to set the country`s economy on the right footing if his party is voted into office in 2019.

“The vice president has a role to build the economy and make the country work, fighting corruption is not a policy, he said.

He assured that he would remain loyal to the President and Nigerians, adding that he had never had issues working with people.

Obi further said there was need to review the country`s subsidy regime in the interest of the nation, adding that if the right thing was done, the price of petroleum products would drop.

He said the PDP government would properly support Small and Medium Enterprises in the country as well create enabling environment to attract foreign investors.

Also speaking at the debate, Mrs Umma Getso, Young Progressives Party Vice Presidential Candidate said the girl-child education and women empowerment was her priority.

She stressed that her party had all it takes to move the country to the next level, adding that subsidy in petroleum productes was a scam and should be removed completely.

She emphasised the need to rebuild the country`s economy which she said is all encompassing, adding that her party would ensure constitutional restructuring and electricity redistribution.

Alliance for New Nigeria Vice Presidential Candidate, Khadijah Abudullahi-Iya said her party if voted into office, would ensure transparency in government`s institutions, diversify the economy and address issues surrounding petroleum subsidy.

She also said that her party had in place policies that would address unemployment, and encourage free trade to grow the economy.

Alhaji Ganiyu Galadima, Allied Congress Party of Nigeria Vice Presidential Candidate said his party would work with technocrats to develop the country`s economy and make her the envy of other nations.

He said his party would privatise all government business to make them more productive.
