Modric Has A Dig At Messi And Ronaldo For Skipping Ballon d’Or eremony

LUKA MODRIC HAS hit out at Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo for skipping the Ballon d’Or gala, with the 2018 winner suggesting the iconic figures only care about personal recognition.

After a decade of dominance by Argentine and Portuguese superstars, the prestigious Golden Ball is now in new hands.

Real Madrid midfielder Modric has seen his efforts recognised, with a memorable year seeing him reach the World Cup final with Croatia and claim the FIFA Best Award.

The Croatia international has been hailed for ending the duopoly of Messi and Ronaldo, but a former Blancos team-mate and Barcelona rival were not on hand to see his latest coronation.

Pressed by Sportske Novosti for his take on the award snub, Modric said: “I cannot say why someone did not attend – that’s their choice.

“That is logical, is it not?

“It turns out these choices and trophies only have value when they get them.

“It is not fair to their playing colleagues, or to the voters who have nominated them for the past 10 years – nor for football or supporters.

“But I repeat, everyone behaves the way they think they need to.

While pleased to have seen his efforts in 2018 acknowledged, Modric concedes that he is not the best player on the planet.

He is, however, eager to point out that prizes such as the Ballon d’Or are distributed to those who have impressed over the course of a 12-month period, not their career as a whole.

The 33-year-old added: “Here we are talking about seasonal performance, and it probably means that all the coaches, players, football legends and journalists have voted the same.

“Or are they all mistaken at the same time?

“If we vote on the quality of the player, then the only thing left is to distribute all the trophies for Messi and Ronaldo as long as they are actively playing and to abandon any vote.

Having already helped himself to an enviable haul of individual honours this year, to go with the Champions League crown he collected with Madrid last season, Modric is now looking to wrap up 2018 by helping the Blancos to a third successive Club World Cup triumph.

West Ham Captain Mark Noble Admits He Cannot Rule Out MLS Move

The 31-year-old midfielder signed a new deal this week that will keep him at the London Stadium until 2021, but is already looking ahead to his future.

Writing in an Evening Standard column, he said:When you reach the age of 34, playing in the Premier League is a really tough ask.

“I can’t see myself playing against the club I really love, but I would never rule out playing abroad, maybe in the United States.

“When the time comes to hang up my boots, I would love to stay involved at the club.

“I haven’t taken my coaching badges yet because during the summer break, family time is so important to me. It makes up for the time I spend away from them at weekends, Christmas and Easter.

“I would like to take my coaching badges at some point, but the way I’m looking at things, I would prefer a mentoring role, working with the academy and all the age groups.

Christmas: 201 FRSC mobile courts to begin sitting Monday ― Corps Marshal

Mobile Courts

THE 201 mobile courts set up by the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), nationwide to prosecute traffic offenders during the yuletide season, will begin sitting on Monday.

Dr Boboye Oyeyemi, Corps Marshal of the FRSC, was on a nationwide tour, disclosed this on Saturday in Ibadan during his visit to Oyo State, in an effort to ensure a free flow of traffic nationwide during the yuletide season.

The Corps Marshal said all his personnel would be mobilized to ensure motorist obey traffic rules and urged road users to comply with traffic regulations so as not to spend their Christmas and New Year in prison custody.

He called for maximum punishment for any motorists that assault any of his personnel, saying 71 of his officers were assaulted by motorists from January till date as a result of malicious behaviour of some road users.

Oyeyemi advised motorists to cooperate with FRSC personnel as we move towards the end of the year 2018.

He said the commission has been able to bring down the number of road traffic crashes to single digit in 2018 compared to 2017, saying this was an indication that an appreciable achievement had been achieved.

Oyeyemi said the FRSC was embarking on a critical assessment of key federal roads nationwide in which Lagos-Ibadan Expressway tour-gate, Iwo road expressway was among in order to ensure a free flow of traffic during yuletide period.

“I am satisfied with the level of operation so far and we are complying with the directive of President Muhammadu Buhari to ensure a free flow of traffic and reduce road crashes.

`I have set down full enforcement to ensure removal of obstruction from high ways, proper manning of all diversion areas so that we don’t experience gridlock and rescue team fully activated among others,’’ Oyeyemi said.

Oyeyemi urged road users to plan their journey and not to be in haste to complete the journey of four hours in two hours, saying most federal roads were now undergoing repair and motorist may not spend the normal time they spent when traffic was light.

He promised prompt response of the commission whenever there was traffic obstruction or road crashes and appealed to motorists to cooperate adequately.

Oyeyemi also urged the FRSC personnel conduct themselves in a professional manner.

Army lifts suspension on UNICEF activities in northeast

Buhari hosts talks to help bring security to the Lake Chad Region

In a statement, Col. Onyema Nwachukwu, the Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, said that the the Military premised its rethink on intervention by stakeholders and well-meaning Nigerians.

The Nigerian Army has announced a reversal of the decision to suspend the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) from the North-East.

In a statement, Col. Onyema Nwachukwu, the Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, said that the the Military premised its rethink on intervention by stakeholders and well-meaning Nigerians.

The Army had accused the organisation of “sabotage and slammed a three-month suspension on its activities in the North-East, which was announced earlier on Friday.

“Sequel to intervention by well meaning and concerned Nigerians over the recent suspension of UNICEF operations in the North East theatre of operations, the Theatre Command Operation LAFIYA DOLE convened and held an emergency meeting with representatives of UNICEF this evening.

“During the meeting, the Theatre Command admonished the representatives of the organization to desist from activities inimical to Nigeria’s national security and capable of undermining ongoing fight against terrorism and insurgency.

“The Command also urged UNICEF representatives to ensure they share information with relevant authorities whenever induction or training of new staff is being conducted in the theatre.

“Consequently, after extensive deliberations on the need to seek modalities to work harmoniously with the security agencies in the theatre of operation, the Theatre Command, henceforth, lifted the three months suspension earlier imposed on UNICEF activities in North Eastern Nigeria.
