Harriet Bolatito Solabi and Victor Chukwu

The suspects have been identified as Harriet Bolatito Solabi, a 34-year old Higher National Diploma holder, and Victor Chukwu, a school drop-out.

Officers of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested a female graduate and a secondary school drop out for drug trafficking.

The duo was apprehended at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, with illicit drugs.

Instablog9ja reports that Solabi was arrested on board an Ethiopian Airways aircraft that was set to leave the country with 3.9kg of ephedrine and 1.6kg of methamphetamine.

After checking in two big bags she had claimed was filled with personal items and boarded the flight No.910 to Addis Ababa while awaiting take-off, Solabi was recalled and searched.

The drugs were discovered in the false bottom of the bags.

Following her arrest, she lied that she was unaware of the drugs which she claimed was requested by her contact in Pretoria, South Africa, to collect from an unknown person in Lagos.

She also claimed to have arrived Abuja from Lagos on a local flight for an onward flight to Johannesburg.

However, NDLEA found that she had made several trips to South Africa numerous times without any issues until her arrest.

The suspect who is a single mother of a 10-year old daughter, attended Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Abeokuta.

She disclosed to the NDLEA during interrogation that she trades in fabrics, which she goes to bring from South Africa to Nigeria and distribute them to her customers.

The second suspect, Chukwu, was also arrested after ingesting 59 wraps of heroin weighing 865 grammes.

He confessed to the NDLEA that a black woman met him in a restaurant in Malawi and talked him into bringing the illicit substance to Nigeria.

Chkwu claimed that he was to call her upon arrival in Nigeria for her to direct the receiver to him.

He added that he agreed to be a drug mule due to poverty.

Sports: WHERE ARE THEY NOW? Bill Belichick's big-name coaching staff from his first Super Bowl

null

There were some big names on Belichick's first Super Bowl staff.

The New England Patriots have won yet another AFC championship and will face the Philadelphia Eagles as they go for their second straight Super Bowl win and their sixth Lombardi Trophy in 17 years.

The two constants throughout the Patriots' dominance have been the ageless Tom Brady and head coach Bill Belichick and it all started in 2001. It was Brady and Belichick's second season together, they went 11-5, won the famous "tuck rule" game in the playoffs, and later beat the heavily favored St. Louis Rams in the Super Bowl with an Adam Vinatieri field goal on the final play of the game.

In addition to some memorable players, Belichick's coaching staff was filled with some memorable names and several went on to become head coaches. Amazingly, they are all still in the NFL world and most are still coaching.

Below we look back at Belichick's first Super Bowl coaching staff and see what they are up to today.

Bill Belichick was in his second season as head coach of the Patriots after previously serving as head coach of the Browns. He was also head coach of the Jets for one day after Bill Parcells stepped down. Belichick later changed his mind and joined the Patriots.

Belichick is now in his 18th season as head coach of the Patriots. He has won eight AFC titles and is going for his sixth Super Bowl win.

Charlie Weis came with Belichick from the Jets to the Patriots in 2000 to be his offensive coordinator.

Weis later left and spent eight seasons as a head coach in college at Notre Dame and Kansas. He went 41-49, including 22-43 over the last six seasons. He recently told ESPN he hopes to coach again.

Source: ESPN

Romeo Crennel also came to the Patriots from the Jets with Belichick to serve as defensive coordinator.

Crennel left the Pats in 2005 to be the head coach of the Browns. In four seasons with the Browns and later two seasons as head coach of the Chiefs, he went 28-55. He is now the defensive coordinator for the Houston Texans.

Eric Mangini was the defensive backs coach for the Pats, having worked with Belichick on the Browns and Jets previously.

Mangini left the Pats to become the head coach of the Jets, something Belichick did not approve of. Their relationship fell apart completely thanks to Mangini's role in Spygate. He would later serve as head coach of the Browns and most recently as a defensive coordinator under Chip Kelly with the 49ers. He's now an analyst with FS1 and recently told ESPN he is hoping to reconcile with Belichick.

Source: ESPN

Josh McDaniels' first job in the NFL was as a personnel assistant with the 2001 Patriots.

McDaniels eventually rose to offensive coordinator before leaving to become the head coach of the Broncos. In 2012 he returned to the Pats as offensive coordinator and has been with the Patriots for all five of their Super Bowl wins. McDaniels is a candidate to become the next head coach of the Colts after the Super Bowl.

When Belichick joined the Patriots, he hired Oklahoma State defensive coordinator Rob Ryan to be his linebackers coach.

After Ryan left the Patriots he served as the defensive coordinator for five different teams. Most recently he was with the Buffalo Bills under brother Rex Ryan. Ryan now serves as an analyst for FS1. He also hosts a show on Fox Sports Radio.

Ivan Fears was the wide receivers coach for the 2001 Patriots.

In 2002, Fears switched to running backs coach and has remained in that position ever since.

Brian Daboll was a rookie NFL coach in 2001 as a defensive assistant.

Daboll stayed with the Pats until 2006 and then bounced around the NFL and college. Over the next 11 seasons he spent time with six different teams, including a second stint with the Patriots. Most recently he was the offensive coordinator for the 2017 national championship Alabama team. There was speculation that Daboll would replace Josh McDaniels as the Pats' offensive coordinator. Instead, the Buffalo Bills snagged him before the Pats had a shot and made Daboll their offensive coordinator.

Jeff Davidson was the Pats' assistant offensive line coach. After seven seasons with the Patriots, he spent time with the Browns, Panthers, Vikings, and Chargers. He just completed his first season as the o-line coach with the Broncos.

Pepper Johnson was an assistant linebackers coach when he started his coaching career.

Johnson was with Belichick until 2013 before joining the staff in Buffalo, and later the New York Jets. He was let go by the Jets after the 2016 season. Johnson did not coach in 2017.

Dante Scarnecchia was Belichick's offensive line coach and assistant head coach in 2001.

Scarnecchia has spent 32 of the last 36 seasons as a Patriots assistant under six different head coaches. He retired after the 2013 season, but returned in 2016 to resume his role as o-line coach.

Brad Seely was Belichick's special teams coach for his first nine years in Foxborough.

Seely left to become the assistant head coach in Cleveland and later San Francisco. He was with the Raiders this past season but was hired to be the special teams coach in Houston after the season.

Now check what the players on that team are up to now.

Batshuayi brace puts Chelsea into FA Cup fifth round

Federer: Tearful Swiss wins Australian Open for 20th Slam title

Switzerland's Roger Federer kisses the winner's trophy after beating Croatia's Marin Cilic in their men's singles final match of the Australian Open in Melbourne on January 28, 2018

"I’m so happy it’s unbelievable. This is a dream come true, the fairytale continues for me," Federer said at the presentation.

A tearful Roger Federer powered home to beat Marin Cilic in five riveting sets to win his sixth Australian Open and 20th Grand Slam title on Sunday.

The Swiss defending champion dropped his only sets of the tournament before completing a 6-2, 6-7 (5/7), 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 win over the sixth seeded Croatian in 3hr 3min.

Federer, playing in his 30th Grand Slam final, joined Novak Djokovic and Australian great Roy Emerson as joint top for the most Australian Open men's titles.

"I’m so happy it’s unbelievable. This is a dream come true, the fairytale continues for me," Federer said at the presentation.

"After the great year last year, it’s incredible," the 36-year-old added as he broke down in tears.

Federer added to his already imposing win-loss record in Melbourne and is now 94-13. His overall his Grand Slam mark stands at 332-52.

"It was an amazing journey to come to the final. It could have been the best two weeks of my life, but Roger played a great fifth set," Cilic said.

"I want to thank my team, you’re unbelievable. We worked hard for this year, hopefully we will lift these trophies in the future."

The roof was closed over Rod Laver Arena as the tournament's heat policy was implemented amid evening temperatures of 38 Celsius (100 Fahrenheit).

Cilic's serve came under immediate pressure with a whipping backhand return winner for break point which the Croatian followed with a smash into the net for a break in the opening game.

The Croat was finding it difficult to settle and changed racquets in his second service game, but it had no obvious benefit as he dropped serve again after three break points to trail 0-3.

He finally held serve to get on the board but the Swiss star was too good, serving out the set in just 24 minutes after a shaky Cilic opening.

– Big moment –

Federer fought off two break points in his opening service in the second set with pinpoint serves, while Cilic had a tussle before holding in the third game.

Cilic worked his way back into the match as both players traded furious forehands to stay on serve.

Cilic was break point down in the ninth, but crucially got out of it with a second serve ace down the middle followed by a forehand winner.

The Croat had a big moment in the 10th game when two Federer double faults gave him set point, but a tentative backhand into the net and a wild backhand cost him his chance.

Croatia's Marin Cilic holds his trophy after defeat in the men's singles final against Switzerland's Roger Federer at the Australian Open in Melbourne on January 28, 2018

In the tiebreaker, Cilic got to two set points when his forehand clipped the line before a winning smash levelled the match as Federer dropped his first set of the tournament.

But Cilic lost serve on the back of a couple of ground stroke errors and Federer raced 4-2 up in the third set.

The defending champion shifted gears with a stunning forehand off his toes and confidently held serve to lead 5-2 before clinically serving out the set in 29 minutes.

Cilic was then broken in the opening game of the fourth set with a poor backhand dropshot into the net as Federer closed in for the kill.

But the Croat broke back in the sixth game with three break points when Federer netted and fought off a break point in the next game to put his nose in front.

Cilic was now more in the flow and broke Federer again with his big forehands starting to find their mark. He served it out to take the absorbing final into a fifth.

But Federer stayed calm and produced quality backhands to hold on to his serve amid mounting tension.

The world No.2 crucially broke to 2-0 and got a vital double break when Cilic netted a forehand, leaving him to serve out for the championship.

Fitness: How this man carved a killer six-pack and became an adventure athlete

Photograph courtesy of Marcus Leach

While he lost a bit of weight for his wedding, Leach had already gained it all back during his month-long honeymoon.

In 2014, Marcus Leach was on a flight home from his honeymoon in India. His wife was sleeping soundly in the seat next to him, but he was wide awake thinking about the one thing that constantly hovered in the back of his mind: He hated the way he looked.

While he lost a bit of weight for his wedding, Leach had already gained it all back during his month-long honeymoon.

The scale read 242 pounds — his heaviest weight to date. Thirty years old at the time, Leach was consistently downing too much booze and junk food, like cake and chocolate. Regular workouts weren’t a part of his daily routine.

“It was in that moment, 29,000 feet above the Indian Ocean, that I just said enough was enough,” Leach told Men’s Health. “I would be lying if I said that I hadn’t dreamt of achieving a physique similar to those you see on the covers of various men’s fitness magazines, and yet for all of that dreaming, I was suddenly 30 and no closer to turning my dreams into a reality.”

From then on, Leach knew that his goals would take some serious commitment.

He started with food, cutting all the processed foods, added sugars, and alcohol from his diet. Instead of eating sugary cereals for breakfast, Leach started cooking meals that included protein, nuts, and vegetables.

Portions were key. Leach used to slam burritos filled to the brim, but now he now munches on toast topped with avocado, a scrambled egg, and roasted beetroot. Curry full of vegetables, herbs, and sauce is a new favorite at dinner.

Three weeks into vegetarianism and absolutely loving it. What's more it hasn't impacted my training in the slightest. #meatfree #vegetarian #cycling #sustainable pic.twitter.com/1roZhXokG6

— Marcus Leach (@MarcusGLeach) January 18, 2018

“It’s all about being creative in the kitchen and enjoying the process, as well as the food,” he says. “Often people think that to get in great shape you need to sacrifice the love of food, which simply isn’t the case.” In fact, one recent study found that people who cook their meals at home were more likely to weight less and carry less excess body fat.

But Leach still leaves room for dessert. He makes treats like raspberry cheesecake and chocolate-orange truffles from natural ingredients and no processed sugars. “You really can have your cake and eat it, but only in moderation,” he says. (Here’s what eating in moderation really looks like.)

Next, Leach made it a mission to hit the gym four times a week. Burning fat and building muscle was the goal, so he incorporated upper- and lower-body splits, along with lots of ab exercises.

“I loved squatting, and still do to this day, as you can’t beat the feeling of a huge leg workout. I was also a fan of farmer’s walk and reverse sled drag, both brilliant for shredding fat,” he says. “I also grew to enjoy exercises I wasn’t brilliant at, such as dips and wide-grip chinups—the better I got at them the more rewarding they became.”

How to Do the Dumbbell Farmer’s Walk:

After nearly a year, Leach wanted to sweat beyond the gym. After reading a book about mountaineering called No Shortcuts to the Top, he was inspired to challenge himself even more.

“I loved the body I had created, but at the same time I was fascinated with seeing what else I could achieve. I thought, ‘Well if you can do that, what’s next?’ So I signed up to go on an expedition to climb Mont Blanc in the French Alps,” he says.

After climbing Mont Blanc, Leach decided to keep going and tackle the highest mountain in Europe—Mount Elbrus in Russia. And while he failed to make it to the summit the first time, he didn’t give up easily. He tried again, this time successful. Having crossed one goal off his list, he decided to push himself with another: try his hand at long-distance cycling.

In order to train for cycling, Leach still does core and leg work, like squats, Russian twists, and decline situps. But unlike the early stages of his fitness routine, he now completes more reps with less weight, switching his focus from bulking up to cutting down, so he can climb and ride up mountains easier.

The original goal was to look good shirtless, but now he’s focused on getting in the shape he needs to be in for the activities he does regularly, like cycling and climbing. Ultimately, Leach would like to ride 186 miles at a time on his bike, so he’s pedals through two-hour rides on weekdays (usually about 30 to 40 miles at a time) and longer rides (anywhere between 100 to 120 miles) on weekends.

All this milage on the bike has definitely paid off for Leach. Last year, he became one of less than 60 people in the world to complete the Giro d’Italia, Tour de France, and Vuelta a España races all in the same year.

“I rode the exact race routes as the professionals, just one day ahead with my wife and little boy as support crew,” he says.

Achieving this kind of success hasn’t been without its hardships, though.

“The main challenge since taking on bike races and mountaineering trips is how to handle and overcome failure because I haven’t always been successful, and that was hard to deal with at first. However, I knew that I would only fail if I quit,” Leach says. “I have a little 2-year-old son, and I want to inspire him and show him that there are no limits to what he can achieve in life.”

He always based his decisions off of one question: What would a champion do? “The biggest hurdle people face in life is themselves and what they tell themselves. With the right mindset anything is possible—there are no limits,“ he says.

Now 34 years old, he currently weighs 198 pounds, his body fat percentage is in the single digits, and he’s totally transformed his abs by consistently doing a variety of exercises like hanging leg raises, decline situps, Russian twists, reverse crunches, and weighted knee lifts.

“Losing the weight really gave me a huge deal of confidence in the way that I looked. When I saw the difference of 11 months hard work and training, I was delighted,“ he says. “That one decision to get fit just over four years ago has given me a life as an adventure athlete, writer, and speaker.“

You don’t need to climb the highest peak in Europe to get in shape, but Leach believes his success stems from finding activities that made him feel fulfilled.

“Life is for living, not existing,“ he says. “By deciding to live a healthier, more active lifestyle and focusing on your own goals, you can be so much happier. It’s not about comparing yourself to other people, but rather being the best version of yourself.“

Breaking: Buhari embraces Obasanjo in Ethiopia

Cleric Tasks Nigerians On Regular Tax Payment

Tax

A cleric, Rev. Ifeanyi Okonkwo, has urged Nigerians to cultivate the habit of regular payment of taxes for rapid development of the country.

Okonkwo said this on Sunday while delivering a homily at the Anglican Church of Ascension, Enugu.

He said the nation would attain rapid development and fast economic growth if citizens were faithful in paying their taxes and other dues.

The cleric also urged Christian traders to make the payment of taxes voluntary for the overall development of the Nation.

“God sanctions every individual to contribute to the common-fund used in building the society and providing social services through paying of taxes and other dues.

“Even Christ instructed us to give what belongs to Caesar to Caesar and what belongs to God to God. Christ Himself paid his tax while he was on earth even in the presence of his disciple.

“We owe it a duty as directed by the Holy Bible to continue to pray for our leaders especially as they take socio-economic decisions that affect our lives,’’ he added.

Pulse Opinion: Arsenal have lost fear factor for Chelsea

Arsenal have lost fear factor for Chelsea

Recent encounters suggest that Arsenal are not longer afraid of Chelsea

Arsenal defeated Chelsea yet  again this season, this time in the Carabao Cup semi final, this write up argues that Arsene Wenger's team have have lost the fear factor for Chelsea.

Psychological Battle

Rewind back to Chelsea under Jose Mourinho, the Portuguese set up his Chelsea side to 'beat' Arsenal at almost any given time.

It did not matter if Arsenal had 500% possession, victory was certain or rather defeat was not an option.

All it took was a direct long ball from midfield to chief tormentor Didier Drogba, and the rest is history.

It seemed that no matter what Arsenal do they could not just get a substantial victory.

Throught Mourinho's reign in his first stint at Chelsea in was a torn in Wenger's flesh, both on and off the pitch.

That battle and fighting spirit was transmitted to his players on the field as they always upped their game when facing their London rivals.

That mantle was passed down to precceding coaches, Avram Grant and Carlo Ancelloti who maintained the status quo.

Even Mourinho returned for his second stint, the trend continued,  Diego Costa the new menace to strike fear in the hearts of Arsenal defenders.

Even when Chelsea were having their worst season in 2015, the blues still defeated the gunners, it was a psychological warfare that has been established in the minds of Chelsea players.

Arsene Wenger's record against Mourinho at Chelsea

Played 14, Won 0, Draws 6, Lost 8

However, in recent times Arsenal have fought back since the departure of Mourinho

Difference Chelsea Under Conte

Under Antonio Conte, Chelsea fans are witnessing something they have not been used to in recent times.

Since the Italian took over at Chelsea, the blues have won just one of their last eight meetings with their London rivals. Against Antonio Conte  Arsenal have won  four, drawn three and lost one)

It is not just that Chelsea lost, it is the pattern of these defeats that suggest that Arsenal now feel more comfortable playing against Chelsea.

Arsenal beat Chelsea to win the FA Cup, Community shield and in the semi-final of the Carabao Cup.

The manner of these defeats where silverware is at stake is a pointer that Arsenal have turned the tides,

Without no doubt Wenger is Conte's Nightmare.

Italian jinx?

Arsene Wenger may have his shortcomings but he has a pretty decent head to head record against Italian managers, which could be an explanation for the sudden dominance over Chelsea in recent times.

Arsene Wenger overall record versus Italian managers

Claudio Ranieri           Won 10 drew 6 lost 1

Antonio Conte            Won 4 drew 3 lost 1

Gianluca Vialli              Won 3 drew 2 lost 2

Guus Hiddink             Won 0 drew 0 lost 3

Carlo Ancellotti           Won 2 drew 1 lost 5

Roberto Mancini        Won 2 drew 2 lost 3

Strategy: Dating is getting even more complicated — here are 5 more terms you need to know in 2018

null

As if it wasn't bad enough.

If you thought the world of ghosting, stashing, and sidebarring was bad, things are about to get worse.

Modern dating is tough, and sometimes it can feel like everyone else has a manual to follow while you're left in the dark wondering if anyone will ever love you.

The game playing makes it even more complicated. When are you supposed to arrange the second date? How long do you wait until you phone or text the person you're interested in?

Of course, social media only perpetuates our anxieties.

However, thanks to dating website Plenty of Fish, there are names for all the digital dating behaviours you're likely to come across in 2018 — and most of them are linked to our phones, according to the site's dating expert Shannon Smith.

"[They] can often be avoided by communicating clearly with someone we're dating, and being mindful of our tech manners," she told Business Insider. "For instance, 'Cricketing' and 'Ghostbusting' are simply by-products of attempting to spare someone's feelings, or avoiding an awkward conversation that we shouldn't shy away from. And we all know that phoneless 'Flexting' has been going on since the dawn of time.

She added: "Singles in 2018 are incredibly savvy daters, and are more empowered than ever to make the best choices for them when it comes to their romantic dealings. But in a fast-paced world with so much choice, sometimes we all need a reminder that dating should be fun!"

Here are the five new dating behaviours to be aware of in 2018 — then you can go back to swiping away to your heart's content, knowing what you're getting yourself into.

1. Flexting

Flexting is digitally boasting to impress your date before you meet them in real life. According to Plenty of Fish data, 47% of single people have experienced this, via a person who brags to them over texts to big themselves up.

It's usually women on the receiving end of this behaviour, with 63% reporting having gotten messages like this, compared to just 38% of men.

2. Cricketing

Cricketing someone is when you leave them on "read" for too long. In some cases it can take days for the other person to reply and continue the conversation. Instead of getting a response, the sender is met with silence. Cue the crickets.

The majority of single people, 67% of them, have said they've waited patiently for a reply and have gotten it way later than expected. We're all just busy, okay?

3. Ghostbusting

This is one for the people who don't give up. Ghostbusting is where you continue to text someone when they are straight up ignoring you (ghosting).

According to Plenty of Fish, a massive 78% of single millennials have been ghosted by someone they were dating. In the current callous, cowardly world of dating, it's good to know there are some perseverent people left — 38% of people reported someone wouldn't stop texting them after they tried to phase them out.

4. Seredipidating

With seredipidating, you leave things up to fate, and put off a date just in case someone else comes along who you like more.

Nearly a third of singles said they believe the grass is always greener, and have admitted to putting off a day and time to meet for a date, just on the off-chance they meet someone in the interim. There has to be a limit though, as otherwise you'll be swiping forever — alone.

5. Fauxbae'ing

Fauxbae'ing is a curious habit 19% of single men have witnessed. It's when someone pretends to have a significant other over social media, when they're actually single.

(AKA: Bae caught me slippin.)

It's probably a tactic to make an ex jealous, or an attempt to make nosey family members leave you alone. Either way it's a bit weird.

Strategy: Dating is getting even more complicated — here are 5 more terms you need to know in 2018

A Focus On Obasanjo’s Letter To Buhari

What Obasanjo’s letter says:

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo last Tuesday stirred the hornet nest when in a strongly worded 13-page statement, he called on President Muhammadu Buhari not to seek re-election in 2019.

Obasanjo, in the letter, which was given very wide publicity and was entitled, “The Way Out: A Clarion Call for Coalition for Nigeria Movement,” said President Buhari had performed far below expectation and should honourably “dismount from the horse” to join the league of the country’s former leaders whose “experience, influence, wisdom and outreach can be deployed on the side line for the good of the country.”

Obasanjo, a two-term president on the platform of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), said he felt disappointed by Buhari, whom he supported during the 2015 election over then incumbent and candidate of his former party, Goodluck Jonathan.

Obasanjo had written a condemnatory open letter in December 2013 titled “Before it is Too Late” where he highlighted the numerous failings of the Jonathan administration.

Obasanjo argued that his decision to go against Mr Jonathan at the time was the right one, as events in the last three years have since proved, was for the good of the nation and nothing personal.

While thanking Buhari for the effort of his administration in rolling back the Boko Haram insurgency and his fight against corruption, Obasanjo said Buhari has ultimately failed in other areas where he had thought he would be efficient.

The former President admitted he knew that Buhari was weak in handling the economy. He said he however went ahead and voted for him because at the time “it was a matter of ‘any option but Jonathan’” and because he thought Buhari would appoint qualified Nigerians to help out in that area.

He slammed Buhari for turning a blind eye to corruption within his government saying it amounted to condonation and cover-up, saying whoever is “going to justice must be with clean hands.”

Obasanjo berated Buhari for allowing the clashes between herdsmen and farmers to go “sour” and messy saying the endorsement of the President by some governors to seek re-election barely 24 hours after 73 people who were killed by herdsmen in Benue State were given mass burial was “a sad symptom of insensitivity and callousness.”

Obasanjo delivered his harshest words for the President when he spoke of Buhari’s clannishness, lack of understanding of the dynamics of politics, and his tendencies to pass the buck of his government’s inadequacies to the immediate past administration.

“But there are three other areas where President Buhari has come out more glaringly than most of us thought we knew about him.  One is nepotic deployment bordering on clannishness and inability to bring discipline to bear on errant members of his nepotic court.  This has grave consequences on performance of his government to the detriment of the nation.  It would appear that national interest was being sacrificed on the altar of nepotic interest.  What does one make of a case like that of Maina: collusion, condonation, ineptitude, incompetence, dereliction of responsibility or kinship and friendship on the part of those who should have taken visible and deterrent disciplinary action?  How many similar cases are buried, ignored or covered up and not yet in the glare of the media and the public?

“The second is his poor understanding of the dynamics of internal politics.  This has led to wittingly or unwittingly making the nation more divided and inequality has widened and become more pronounced.  It also has effect on general national security.

“The third is passing the buck.  For instance, blaming the Governor of the Central Bank for devaluation of the naira by 70% or so and blaming past governments for it, is to say the least, not accepting one’s own responsibility.  Let nobody deceive us, economy feeds on politics and because our politics is depressing, our economy is even more depressing today.  If things were good, President Buhari would not need to come in.  He was voted to fix things that were bad and not engage in the blame game.”

Since former President Obasanjo’s letter, a lot of Nigerians have been speaking on it, with many supporting that President Buhari should just complete his first term and step aside.

Obasanjo’s Timely, Says IYC President

Barrister Roland Pereotubo Oweilaemi, President, Ijaw Youth Congress (IYC), Worldwide, has said that former President Obasanjo’s advice to President Buhari to retire from politics in 2019 was timely and an affirmation of the wishes of the majority of Nigerians.

The IYC president said that in critical analysis of the style of governance by the present government, hardly could any Nigerian accept Buhari coming back for second tenure.

Oweilaemi said: “Buhari’s Presidency represents different things to different Nigerians on the negative note. The entire country is wailing and we cannot afford to have a continuation of this political attrition. The call for regime change at this critical time of our very existence is a clarion call that all lovers of democracy must endorse. The suffering in the land is getting to a head and things must not be allowed to continue the way it is.

“To us in the Niger Delta region, the call for a regime change means a socio-political harmony and national cohesion. As the former President has clearly stated that he was only advising the government, IYC also advises the President to rescind his ambition of contesting for second tenure.

“It will more honourable, especially for the sake of our peaceful coexistence if he does not contest. Let him be a statesman and maintain his integrity for the purpose of conducting hitch-free elections in 2019. IYC therefore endorses former President Obasanjo’s advice on President Buhari not to contest in 2019.”

Buhari Should Heed Obasanjo’s Advice – Onuesoke

Chief Sunny Onuesoke, a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain in Delta State, has supported the call by former President Obasanjo that President Buhari should go and rest after the end of his first tenure.

Onuesoke, a former governorship aspirant in Delta State, in his reaction said the current security and economic logjam are enough indices for Buhari and his APC government to quit the stage before further damage is done to the country.

He added that Obasanjo, through his letter, had vindicated him. He said: “I said it on his (PMB) 75 years birthday on the 28th of December, 2017 that he should resign as president and go and rest. What Obasanjo said is not new to me. As for Buhari, he is overdue for retirement.”

There Is Nothing Wrong In Obasanjo’s Letter – Security Analyst

Mike Ejiofor, an Umuahia-based international security analyst, said there is nothing untoward in the letter written by the former President Obasanjo to President Buhari on the state of the nation and the way forward.

He said the letter was not the first time such a letter to a sitting President would emanate from the same source, noting that during the Goodluck Jonathan’s Presidency, Nigerians read a similar letter which ostensibly set the tone for the 2015 general elections.

Ejiofor stressed that it would be wrong for anyone to assume that if Obasanjo wrote to one President, he would not write to those after him,  insisting that whether it was a letter of commendation or condemnation, Nigerians and sitting Presidents must continually look forward to it from that same source, unless he is no more.

He said: “I don’t think there should be any fuss concerning the letter from the former President.  And I don’t think anybody should view the letter from any other angle save from what the letter has expressed. It is a former President writing to a fellow, even though one is past and the other present.  I believe that this kind of thing is good for our democracy and also good for good governance.

“President Obasanjo will be doing this great country a disservice if he derelict in his position as a former President to lend his voice to issues affecting the economic and social well being of Nigeria and Nigerians.  Once he fails to recognise his worth and submit to primordial sentiment, then he will no longer be worth the oath of office he took as the President of Nigeria.

“As a former President he is an elder statesman and that has provided him grounds to speak out for and against issues affecting the nation, no matter whose ox is gored.  In the past, the former President had commended President Buhari and if he sees something else, should he keep quiet over the new development?

“And in any case, unlike the letter to President Jonathan, he commended President Buhari on the war on corruption, but only said the President should consider and see if Nigeria was moving in the direction he had hoped for while running for the office of President.  So, I don’t see anything wrong with him writing a letter to the sitting President.

“Nigerians will still expect the thing from President Buhari when he leaves office because, whether he leaves in 2019 or 2023, the bottom line is that there is a set time and when it comes, the posture is what Nigerians will expect from him.  He must rise above every sentiment and proffer ideas on how to make things easier for the people.

“Finally, I want to say that what he (Obasanjo) has advanced is an advice to the sitting President, which he (Buhari) is at liberty to accept or discard.  If President Buhari sees any merit in it, he, as an elder statesman, will act.  If he needs clarification, he will ask for it.  So, the first overall decision lies with President Buhari and I don’t want to believe that the action of President Buhari will be dictated by the letter, but from his own conviction that it is the right decision to take.

Obasanjo Can Only Advise Buhari To Retire  – NCP Chief

Abdullahi Salaudeen, the Niger State Chairman of the National Conscience Party (NCP), maintained  that “Obasanjo can by way of advice and as a former colleague call of President Buhari to retire if, and of course if he (Obasanjo) I believe is joining other Nigerians because he sees that deliberately or not deliberately things are not working the way Nigerians had envisaged when they gathered their ‘Toro-toro’ and ‘Kobo-kobo’ to ensure that Buhari emerged President because of what they believed he could do.

“Agreed, Chief Obasanjo is an elder statesman. He is a two-time President of this country. As a Military Head of State and twice a civilian President, he has no prerogative powers constitutionally to tell President Buhari not to re-contest in 2019, but can only do that on the basis of Freedom of Speech and by way of advice for Buhari not to disgrace himself to avoid Nigerian masses who can as well stop him with the powers of their voters card.

“In essence, Buhari has the constitutional rights to seek re-election, Nigerians has the rights through their voter cards to decide if he (Buhari) can continue or not while the like of Obasanjo only has constitutional powers to advice him as a former colleague in the Nigerian Army not to disgrace himself but not to decide who contests 2019 Presidency as Buhari may be interested in.”

Obasanjo’s Letter Is The Best From A Statesman – PDP Legal Adviser

Barrister Emmanuel Enoidem, the National Legal Adviser,  Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has deescribed former President Obasanjo’s open letter to President Buhari as the best that could come from a statesman.

The PDP chieftain said: “Having failed Nigerians woefully, it was only necessary for someone to boldly tell the Present Buhari-led administration the truth.”

He declared as ‘nonsensical’ any attempt by President Buhari to seek a second term in office, as such could only result from a satisfactory performance and not the level of failure recorded by the administration.

“Buhari’s government is the worst in the history of Nigeria. The administration has added nothing of value to Nigeria, because every indices for measuring success in any administration, especially in the areas of security and economy, have proven to be negative in the case of the present administration.

“Second term is not a reward for failure, it should be a reward for hardwork. Having failed in the first term, it would be most honourable for Buhari to just finish his first term and bow out. He should not even think of a second term please,” he said

Enoidem advised those who are eager to support the present administration for a second term to rather re-channel such energies to support the administration to fulfil at least few of its electioneering promises and lead Nigerians off the difficult situation it pushed the nation into.

‘Obasanjo Did The Right Thing’

Alfred Ihiogbe, a Benin-based lawyer and human rights activist, said; “The former President did the right thing by advising the President, as a close friend and former colleague in the military.

He stressed: “Obasanjo, if you may recall, supported Buhari openly during the 2015 election after writing a similar letter to then President Goodluck Jonathan.  Obasanjo is morally right to say all he said in his letter to the President because there is a saying in my community that it is only your close friend that can tell you that your mouth smells.

“I read the letter and l discovered that Chief Obasanjo was very civil in his language all through. We are all witnesses of what has been going on in the country, especially in the past few weeks. I have never seen a situation where a President of a country will be so silent that he could not make a statement after learning that 73 persons were killed by herdsmen, let alone visiting the state to console the Governor of that state.

“We are not saying that he should visit the scene of the incident, but the state capital. Instead, he summoned the governor and some leaders of the state to the Presidency, and these are people mourning.

“I was a witness to the Jesse fire incident of 1998 in Ethiope West Local Government area of Delta State. The then Head of State, General Abdusallam Abubakar, was less than three months old in office when that incident occurred.  He flew in a helicopter to the scene of the incident the same day it happened.

“The Jesse incident victims were people who went to scoop fuel in a ruptured pipeline which is an offence of its own. Yet, the Head of State didn’t look at that angle of the law against the state by the victims. He flew there to condole with the then Military Administrator of Delta State, who waited for him at the scene of the incident.

“Unlike the Benue incident where innocent people were murdered in cold blood in their homes, only for the President to summon the governor and some leaders of the state and asked them to be accommodative and be their brothers’ keepers.

“I am not saying that was what prompted Obasanjo’s letter. I am using that as an example and Obasanjo didn’t mention that Benue incident in his letter because he may have viewed it as a serious security issue that could degenerate to something else if he points it out.

“As for the letter, I believe it is a good advice to Mr. President, as his friend who he joined others to campaign for to be president. If he discovers that Buhari is not    meeting his expectations, Obasanjo has every right to advise him because to me the former president spoke the mind of the majority of Nigerians.

“For me, I must confess that it has never been so bad in this country. Is it in the area of the economy, security, roads, education, health, name it. Which area? We pray that God will salvage the country.”

Content Of Obasanjo’s Letter Is Right – Activist

Comrade Adegbenle Adebiyi, an activist, said the content of former President Obasanjo’s letter was right and personal. He said that Obasanjo should not be condemned for making the statement, which he said was germane to the growth and economic development of the country.

Adebiyi noted that some of the issues raised in the letter were necessary at this crucial period, stressing that the nation is drifting and should be brought back to right track.

According to him, “former President Obasanjo is a nationalist and his opinion is good for the success and growth of the country. That was why the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Muhammed, said some of the issues raised in the letter were well taken and that the government would look and key into it.

“As a corrective measure, the issues raise will help the government to sit up and make some necessary adjustment. It tells the whole world that there are some appointments that were made that are done without consideration for unity and peace of the country.”

While advocating for immediate cabinet reshuffle by President Buhari, Adebiyi noted that the present cabinet is concentrated in a particular region or section, adding that President Buhari needs to work on that.

He stressed: “There is also the need for the Federal Government to inject professionals and economists into the cabinet to look into the future of the country on how to make the country to survive.”

Controlling anger (2)

By Femi Aribisala

One of the ways we can control our anger is by overlooking offences.  Solomon counsels: “A wise man restrains his anger and overlooks insults.

This is to his credit.” (Proverbs 19:11).  Your busybody friend who is a news-broadcaster asks: “Do you know Ngozi says you are a cheapskate?”  Simply reply: “Good for her.”  Jesus says: “I do not accept praise from men.” (John 5:41).  If so, neither should we accept insults but should ignore them.

David provides a practical response: “I, like a deaf man, do not hear; and I am like a mute who does not open his mouth. Thus I am like a man who does not hear, and in whose mouth is no response. For in you, O LORD, I hope; you will hear, O Lord my God.” (Psalm 38:13-15).

Pay no attention to insults.  Don’t allow the pettiness of others to bother you.  Leave everything to God, our Father.

Nurtured anger

Unfortunately, many of us harbour bitterness in our hearts because of offences.  As a result, we become prone to malicious acts, contrary to the ways of Christ.  Yes, when someone sins against us, we may be offended.  Nevertheless, we should endeavour to be angry at the sin and not necessarily at the sinner.  Anger at sinners often leads to bitterness and hatred, which can destroy us from within.

Anger is wrong when it is cherished and heightened by reflection.  When you have had time to dwell upon the wrong done to you, you end up by embellishing and broadening it.  In the process, you may recall that the head of the offender is actually bigger than usual and thereby abuse his creator.  “Look at that stupid head of his!

The devil will always try to influence you negatively and irritate your spirit.  Jesus says the Holy Spirit will bring to our remembrance the word of God.  Our adversary, the devil, on the other hand, brings to remembrance every wrong done in the past, the better to agitate and aggravate the wounded spirit.

Thus, anger is wrong when accompanied by an unforgiving spirit.  This becomes even worse when it leads to the determination to revenge and exact the utmost satisfaction for the injury.  This is presumptive because vengeance is God’s exclusive purview.  He says: “Vengeance is mine, I will repay.” (Hebrews 10:30).  It is dangerous to arrogate to ourself that which belongs to God.

Amnon raped Tamar, Absalom’s sister.  Absalom became incensed, but he hid his anger in his heart for two years.  Thereafter, at an opportune moment: “Absalom ordered his men, “Listen! When Amnon is in high spirits from drinking wine and I say to you, ‘Strike Amnon down,’ then kill him. Don’t be afraid. Have not I given you this order? Be strong and brave.” So Absalom’s men did to Amnon what Absalom had ordered.” (2 Samuel13:28-29).

From that time, Absalom entered a slippery slope that ended in his death and destruction.  The object of anger should not be to injure but self-protection.

Hypocrites

The Absalom type of malice is most distressing in its prevalence among Christians.  Some are malicious because somebody is rich, or beautiful, or articulate, or skilful.  Others are malicious because of inferiority complexes.  They are insecure and cannot stand those who do not seem to have the problems or difficulties they have.

Thus, they end up “speaking lies in hypocrisy.” (1 Timothy 4:2).  “Why don’t you like Ojo?”  “I love him with the love of God.”  Of course you don’t. But you cannot answer truthfully because it would reveal a part of you that you don’t want to admit, or are inclined to hide.

“Do you have feelings of malice against Fred?”  “No! God knows that I have forgiven him.”  Well, pull this other leg.  When you see Fred what happens?  He just suddenly comes into a room and your stomach turns.  Suddenly you notice that his ears are like flying saucers and his teeth like cutlasses.

Self-righteousness

Unresolved malice is the foundation of an evil heart.  You simply resent everything the other person does.  He cannot seem to do anything right as far as you are concerned.  This easily leads to outbursts of temper against him, which is called wrath.  Wrath becomes anger, which is a state of negative emotional agitation.  Anger can easily lead to clamour, which is quarrelling.  Quarrelling leads to habitual evil-speaking about someone.

This progression takes you out of the kingdom of God into the kingdom of darkness.  Therefore, the tendency must be avoided and resisted through the efficacy of prayer: “Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamour, and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice. And be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you.” (Ephesians 4:31-32).

Make no mistake about it; in any quarrel, you are not blameless.  We need to be reminded of this time and time again.  It often takes two to quarrel.  You can refuse to take the bait even when provoked.  In any case, as some have offended you, so have you offended others.  Anger, then, is sometimes born of self-righteousness.  We are fully convinced we are in the right.  But what we want is Christ’s righteousness and not self-righteousness.

In his self-righteousness, David unwittingly pronounced a death sentence on himself.  When Nathan told him about a rich man who took a poor man’s lamb: “David’s anger was greatly aroused against the man, and he said to Nathan, ‘As the LORD lives, the man who has done this shall surely die! And he shall restore fourfold for the lamb, because he did this thing and because he had no pity.’” (2 Samuel 12:5-6).

It took David a while to realise he was the proverbial wicked rich man.  We are often especially angry at those things we ourselves are guilty of.  David was angry that someone whom God had prospered would be so selfish.  But he failed to recognise he was the man in question.  When we do something wrong, there is usually a good excuse for our actions.  But when the wrongdoing is by someone else, it is inexcusable.  This is hypocritical.

Grace of God

A believer should be slow to anger.  Solomon says: “It is better to be slow-tempered than famous; it is better to have self-control than to control an army.” (Proverbs 16:32).  If you have dealt harshly with someone in anger, go to the person and ask for forgiveness.  Sometimes when you do this, the person concerned is not magnanimous.  He might become uppity and inclined to aggravate you the more.

“So you have finally come to your senses and have now decided to apologise?” he asks.  Don’t be distracted.  Keep your eye on the ball.  It is the kingdom of God you seek, so don’t be provoked anew.

Have you really received a free pardon from the Lord?  Have your sins been forgiven?

Then it behoves you to forgive seventy times seven times.  If you were in the wrong, you must pray to God to give you the grace to admit your wrongdoing.  If you were in the right, you must equally ask for the grace not to be conceited.

Do so right now without delay.
