Atiku exit: Lamido lambasts APC

THE Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Presidential aspirant and Former Jigawa Governor, Alhaji Sule Lamido, lambasted the All Progressives Congress (APC) for their inability to keep former vice President Alhaji Atiku Abubakar in the fold despite claims of perfections that their party would perform better than the PDP.

The ex-governor said this in a speech he delivered over the weekend while at a gathering  for the inauguration of  Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) office in Ringim local government of Jigawa state, “this vindicated my several says that APC did not matched Nigeria and can never rule the country perfectly”.

Alhaji Sule Lamido explained this “Adding that,  if Atiku would quit this party it would be morally wrong for any Nigerian to continue to patronise the APC”,

According to him “It is unfortunate that the APC that comprises of those seen to be as ‘saints’ could be classified by Atiku Abubakar as a symbol of poverty, betrayal,  disrespectful and a dungeon of hell”.

Lamido maintained that “I’ve said it again and again that my movement is devoid of pride and lies, it is the will of the almighty Allah that is propelling the people to love and support me and that is how I am, love me or hate me it is up to you‎ because those showing their genuine affection for me are real and not fake”,

He therefore pleaded with the President of the Senate, Senator Bukola Saraki,  Sokoto state governor, Alhaji Aminu Tambuwal, Senator Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso, Aliyu Wammako, Kwara state governor Abdulfatah Ahmed, Attahiru Bafarawa to quickly come back to their former political party the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) so as to reclaim victory come 2019.

He added that “I’m begging Saraki, Tambuwal, Kwankwaso, Wammako, Baffarawa, Masari, Abdulfatah and all those that left us to join this party of dreamers and fake people to come back to PDP, the party that made you politically relevant and made you what you are today as ‎a leader by your own rights”, he stated.

He said, “we had known that sooner or later this would happen, because it is an amalgamation of strange bad fellows that formed the APC that people like Atiku felt he could support its course, yet today they have betrayed him and they will all betray you if you don’t leave them”, he declared.

Alhaji Sule Lamido emphases that “the APC is a composition of fraudsters ‎that usurp God’s work of passing judgment on Nigerians, Nigerians, even recently sent me to Kiyawa prison ‎t‎o shut my mouth, I’m what I am, I am the will of God that can never be shut down by any mortal”, he declared.

‎The ex-governor declared that the commissioning of the new PDP office in Ringim is a reply to some critics that claimed that the party is dead in the state while urging other local government units to replicate the feat in their areas.

Borno to convert Boko Haram leader’s house to museum

The Borno Government says it will convert the house of the former leader of Boko Haram sect, Mohammed Yusuf, to a museum.

The state Commissioner for Home Affairs, Information and Culture, Dr Mohammed Bulama, disclosed this at the sidelines of the 9th National Council for Culture, Tourism and National Orientation held in Dutse, Jigawa.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Council with the theme “Tourism and Culture as Panacea for Nigeria’s Economic Recovery’’ was organised by the Federal Ministry of Information and Culture.

Bulama told NAN in an interview that the museum would help to archive all things related to Boko Haram insurgency to attract tourists and for the benefits of future generation.

“We are going to convert the house of the leader of the Boko Haram sect Mohammed Yusuf where the insurgency all started from, to a museum.

“The place is called Maarcas; we want to build a museum there where all the things that had happened relating to the insurgency will be archived.

“We want to document and archive all that had happened so that our future generation will be able to have first hand information,” he said.

Yusuf, sect leader and founder of the militant Islamist group, Boko Haram was killed in 2009 and his group has continued to constitute serious security threat to Borno and other states in the North-east.

The Commissioner said the State was also planning to turn the Sambisa forest, which used to be the insurgents’ haven, to a tourist centre by reviving the already existing games reserve in the forest.

“Last year, Gov. Kashim Shettima made a pronouncement to the effect that every Dec. 22, will be declared a public holiday in Borno because that is the day the military declared that they had captured Ground Zero in Sambisa forest.

“What we intend to do when stability is fully achieved is to convert the forest into a tourist attraction in order to show the world what has happened.

“Before insurgency, we used to have a game reserve in the Sambisa forest, we are going to revive that,” he said.

According to Bulama, Borno is very rich in culture and diversity; and the government would use the security situation in the State for tourism advantage.

Bulama said that the meeting in Dutse witnessed very robust contributions in form of memorandum presentations and intervention by participants and other stakeholders in the culture and tourism sectors.

Otunba Olusegun Runsewe, the Director General of National Council for Arts and Culture, who also spoke to NAN at the event, said that “culture and tourism are intertwined and cannot be separated.”

He explained that “culture is the brand that tourism sells” and it should be approached based on the strength and rich potential of each state or political zone.

Runsewe said the meeting would enable stakeholders to strategise on harnessing the potential in culture and tourism to become a new oil for the country.

Speaking in the same vein, the Director General of the National Orientation Agency, Dr Garba Abari, said his Agency would use its various platforms to sensitise the people on the country’s diverse cultural heritage and tourism potential.

He said the Agency would work with all States and stakeholders to boost local tourism for employment generation and other economic advantages.

2019: Atiku not a threat to Buhari’s re-election ―Prince Agu

APCAN Igbo Leader and Chieftain of All Progressive Congress (APC), Prince Matthew Onyebuchi Agu has allayed fear that the exit of the former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar from the ruling party at the Centre will pose no threat to the re-election of President Muhammedu Buhari.

Speaking to reporters in Enugu on Sunday, Prince Agu stated that Atiku’s plot to turn the table against the incumbent President in 2019 will be a mirage, stressing, “Buhari has a divine mandate of 8 years from God to fix Nigeria and his victory in 2015 from a new opposition party (APC) over ex-President Goodluck Jonathan of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who spent 16 years in power is a clear proof that his ascension to power is divine”

Prince Agu who is a strong supporter of President Buhari noted that the achievements of the President had justified his divine mandate, pointing out that “they are monumental, trajectory, revolutionary and in nature a liberation of Nigeria from the neo-colonial fangs and heavy yoke of the PDP, a party so abhor-able to mention”

According to him, President Buhari had not only saved Nigeria from sinking due to massive corruption in the country but also taking a bold step to move the country into the path of sustainable progress, having also ensured fiscal discipline,  accountability and due process in the polity .

“Corruption has destroyed the essence of values and ingenuity in Nigeria. Merit and distinction have lost the pride of place in our social lives. Creativity and discoveries have also been consigned to the waste basket. This has resulted in politics being turned into a money spinning venture contrary to the traditional values of enhancing and promoting the living standard of the masses”

“But I think President Buhari has changed all that. Evidence are bound in the Ministries, Agencies and Parastatals such as NNPC, NPA, Immigration, Custom, JAMB and others you will find out that it is no longer the business as usual, the revenue sources have been sanitized and placed under scrutiny unlike before when it was a free for all criminal feasting.

“So, to me Buhari has a non negotiable mandate to rule till 2023, and my worries have been on the process of finding a worthy replacement ostensibly from the Igbo stock, after the expiration of his well deserved tenure in 2023”, he concluded.

Brazilian star Kaka in talks with Chinese side

The 35-year-old former Real Madrid and AC Milan attacking midfielder is a free agent after leaving Orlando City in Major League Soccer (MLS) in the United States last month.

The World Cup winner was linked with a move to the boardroom of AC Milan, where he is a popular figure since his playing days.

But Corriere dello Sport newspaper in Italy and state media in China say he could extend his playing career by a year at Guizhou, who are managed by the Spaniard Gregorio Manzano and finished eighth when the CSL season ended earlier this month.

Guizhou City News said that no contract had yet been signed, but said that Kaka and the club “had a good conversation”.

The Chinese Football Association earlier this year imposed a 100 percent tax on the transfer fees of foreign imports, but Kaka would be available on a free transfer, albeit on hefty wages.

Army, Boko Haram insurgents engage in fierce gun battle in Borno

The Nigerian Army on Saturday repelled an attack by Boko Haram insurgents at Magumeri town, the headquarters of Magumeri Local Government Area, Borno.

Highlights: As reported by The Nation, the insurgents attacked a military formation at Magumeri, about 32 km from Maiduguri.

The insurgents attacked the area at about 6 p.m. and shot sporadically in an attempt to infiltrate the town.

The insurgents could not infiltrate the town and they were forced to flee after hours of gun battle.

No one can ascertain the level of casualties at this time,” he said.

Reaction:

A member of the Civilian Joint Task Force ( CJTF ) in the area, Kaka Audu, a said that the insurgents attacked the town from the military checkpoint and Bengel area of the town.

Mr Audu disclosed that some of the insurgents that attacked from the Bengel axis managed to enter the town and torched some buildings before they were finally pushed back.

We came back from a joint patrol with the military around 6 p.m. because intelligence report showed that the insurgents were gathering at the outskirt of the town.

A few minutes later, the insurgents attacked with full force from two directions. There was reinforcement from the military and the attack was repelled.

Mr Audu noted that powerful echoes of gunshots and explosive devices prompted residents to flee to the nearby forest and later returned to their homes.

Health Tips: Is it a parasite—or just a stomach bug? here's how to tell

Parasitic tapeworm

The symptoms are way more familiar than you might think.

Parasites are organisms that live by stealing nutrients from their hosts, and they often sound like something straight out of a sci-fi movie (picture that chest-bursting scene from Alien).

But the reality is, parasitic infections are a lot more common in humans than you think. In fact, malaria is caused by a parasite, and that disease kills 600,000 people every year.

The types of parasite you’re probably most familiar are called helminths and protozoa, and they cause gastrointestinal symptoms, according to Pascale M. White, M.D., an assistant professor of medicine and director of the Gastroenterology Clinic in the Dr. Henry D. Janowitz division of gastroenterology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. You’ve definitely heard of helminth infections like tapeworms, roundworms, hookworms, and pinworms, and you might even heard of Giardia, a protozoa parasite that causes diarrheal disease. These parasites are the kind of thing you might joke about if you’re having serious stomach issues—”maybe I picked up a tapeworm, lol”—but they’re not really a joking matter.

While some parasitic infections are easily cured, others can be chronic, debilitating, and even fatal. More than 300,000 people are living with Trypanosoma cruzi, the parasitic cause of Chagas disease (a life-threatening illness that causes a wide variety of symptoms), according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention; at least 1,000 people are hospitalized with neurocysticercosis, a type of tapeworm, each year; more than 60 million people are chronically infected with Toxoplasma gondii, a parasitic disease that can cause flu-like symptoms; and 1.1 million people are newly infected with Trichomonas, a parasitic STD, each year. Not so funny anymore, huh?

If you thought parasites were the kind of thing you could only pick up while traveling abroad, think again. “Humans can get infected by ingesting the parasite or its larvae (eggs) found in fecal contaminated food or water,” says White. “Another way is by ingesting the parasite larvae found in undercooked meats like pork or raw fish. And, sometimes, certain parasites have the ability to directly penetrate bare human skin when a person comes into contact with fecal contaminated soil or water.” All of those things are just as likely to happen at home in the United States as they are while you’re beach-hopping in Thailand. Plus, there are certain types of parasites that are more common in America. “For example, Necatur americanus is a hookworm species that is found in the U.S.,” says White. “Strongyloides is a roundworm that is found in hot humid climates in southeastern parts of the United States.”

So how do you know if you have a parasite versus some nasty stomach bug? To be honest, it's tough to tell. There are over 1,000 types of parasites out there, and the symptoms can vary—but will most likely seem unrelated and random. But most parasitic infections do share a number of similar symptoms, including diarrhea, abdominal cramping or pain, nausea, vomiting, lack of appetite, generalized fatigue, unexplained rashes or skin irritation, cough, and unintentional weight loss.

If that list seems…broad, well, you’re not wrong. The symptoms of parasitic infections have a lot in common with symptoms for pretty much any other ailment. The key in determining a parasite source, White says, is the combination of symptoms and the duration of the symptoms. “Keep in mind that some parasites can live in the human body for months or years without causing any symptoms at all!” she adds. “So getting a good medical history and travel history is key. We take all of these signs and symptoms into account when we consider the diagnosis of a parasitic infection.”

If you’ve noticed any of these symptoms and you’ve recently traveled abroad, come into contact with unclean animals, eaten something that could have been contaminated, or genuinely can’t come up with any other reason why you’d be experiencing that reaction, get yourself to primary care doctor or a gastroenterologist ASAP. They can do stool and blood tests to determine what’s causing your symptoms. “For example, certain parasitic infections can lead to abnormalities in specific blood tests, causing conditions like anemia, eosinophilia, or elevated liver enzymes,” explains White. Once they uncover the root issue, a doctor or gastroenterologist can prescribe the right meds to deal with it.

While a real-life parasitic infection may not lead to an Alien-like climax, some of them can be downright unpleasant to deal with (did you see that list of symptoms?). The best thing you can do is identify it and treat it—fast, so you can move on with your life.

Health Tips: Is it a parasite—or just a stomach bug? here's how to tell

PDP chairmanship: Bode George challenges other aspirants to debate

Chief Bode George

A PDP national chairmanship aspirant, Chief Bode George, has challenged other contestants to an open debate on their vision and agenda for the party.

This was contained in a statement issued by his political adviser and media aide, Mr Uthman Fadipe on Sunday.

According to the statement, George gave the challenge during his visit to party delegates in Sokoto on Saturday as part of his campaign tour of the country.

He said whoever wanted to lead the party should come to a debate that would showcase the norms and traditional values of the party.

The former PDP Vice-Chairman told the delegates that he was a committed party man who would deliver the best if elected.

He also said that the micro-zoning of the national chairmanship to the South West would be in the best interest of the party.

George said this was in line with the resolve of the founding fathers to promote equity and balance in the distribution of party offices.

He praised the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III for his patriotism and embracing of all Nigerians irrespective of their faith or tribe.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the party has fixed December 9 for its elective convention.

Alexander Onukwue: What to do with Ebuka’s AGBADA of the century

By Alexander O. Onukwue

The internet broke on 19th November 2017 when #BAAD2017 happened. The traditional wedding ceremony between A-list musician/actor Banky W and AMVCA-winning actor Adesuwa Etomi was a genuinely exciting event for everyone who has followed the couple’s whirlwind romance post “Wedding Party”.

But the spotlight was literally swept out from under by another favourite of Nigerian TV, Ebuka Obi-Uchendu. The former reality show star who, as anchor, was the main attraction for viewers of the 77-day long Big Brother Africa earlier in the year, absolutely dazzled in a very royal adornment of purple agbada, as part of the BAAD SQUAD. It was what may now become known as a classic Ebuka moment; he simply published the picture of himself wearing the outfit at the wedding (accessorized with a ‘wicked’ smile) on Instagram without much fanfare at about 2:11 pm, and the rest was viewer hysteria.

Ebuka’s agbada became more of a subject when photos of musician and producer, Masterkraft showed up. We will not deliberate on that here.

Apart from the mastersnafu, basically every other member of the BAAD SQUAD turned out spectacularly in their various cuts of purple to honour Banky and Adesuwa. Debola Williams gave up his usual white and red without losing the Debola mien, Basketmouth went without the cap but looked every bit the part and Kemi Adetiba was the King Woman.

It surely was one of the most unifying internet days of 2017, with nearly everyone having nothing but good wishes for the couple. Banky’s remarkable recover from a third surgery to treat a flare up of his recurring battle with a melanoma made the emerging union even more of a warm and hearty event. He and the missus dashed away to the Table Mountains of South Africa, accompanied by friends, including Ebuka.

Without a second invitation, the compere’s agbada has been enlisted in the (unofficial) agbada hall of fame, to hang on the same wall as the excellent attire worn by General Olusegun Obasanjo in his 1978 meeting with American president, Jimmy Carter. As a civilian president, Obasanjo did not repeat any of his agbadas and it is also expected that Ebuka will not be repeating his.

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

The designer of the now famous piece, Ugo Monye, must definitely have more where that came from if Ebuka had need for another internet-breaking moment. But what then happens to the piece now?

It’s not our duty to be bothered about what things gather dust in a man’s wardrobe after just one wear, but it would be interesting to research on if there are inflationary costs to one-time attires. What is the economic effect of extraordinarily beautiful clothes designed just to be worn once? Another royal purple which comes to mind is that worn by the photographer and singer, Toni Tones at the 2017 AMVCA.

Ebuka and Tones are only some of many public figures who, as it were, have to wear one-time dresses. Again, President Obasanjo appeared to be particular about his non-repeat to both local and international functions. It was always intriguing to wonder what he did with the dresses he did not repeat and how much it cost to make such dazzling pieces of flamboyance. On the contrary, those who usually wear suits for work could repeat their dresses and because it is their default look, nobody bothers to be up to date on what they are wearing, except for a change in tie (Godwin Emefiele, CBN Governor, wears green ties; same green?). Others who don’t wear the suit but a particular customized traditional appearance, like president Buhari’s chief of staff Abba Kyari, stir a different kind of curiosity but there is no urge to prod on the economic factors.

Obviously, the one-time wearing of certain dresses serves to promote the brand and ingenuity of many designers who rely on public figures to wear their best samples and attract wider patronage. Ugo Monye has definitely benefitted and it is good for the Buy Naija to Grow the Naira campaign; maybe Ministers and politicians should start declaring their designers (Open NASS-wardrobe, ahem). The list may well feature household names like Lanre DaSilva Ajayi and Bayo Oke-Lawal, but there will also be others who could benefit from wider attention to gain patronage.

Or maybe not. Maybe we do not need the craze of paying too much attention to what our public officials wear, hence becoming distracted from what they are being paid to do. Senator Dino Melaye does not want us to be, right? So we won’t. When leaders of the freer worlds seat in a meet, the ubiquity of the suit and simplicity of the gowns ensure focus is on the work at hand. Occasionally, stuff like “who won legsit” happens but there is no conscious effort on the part of the observed to attract it; au contraire, such attention is scorned and resented. No one over there is wearing a stole in a particular fashion so everyone identifies him that way, only to go on to build statues; they just get on with their assigned job.

It is different for private-public figures and there is absolutely no reason not to love Ebuka’s agbada. Whenever the hall of fame becomes a real thing, that piece should be first or second, at worst third. But before a future Minister of Culture creates that (hey, Lai Mohammed’s cap too will be there), what will the iconic dress be up to?

Let’s make a rough list.

  1. Ebuka wears it hosting the 2019 Presidential debate.

He anchored BBNaija and does Rubbin’ Minds every Sunday. The presidential debate would be worth it if ALL the contestants show up, and in agbadas too.

  1. Ebuka wears it in (another) movie called Wedding Party

Are we tired of movies named Wedding something? Not if Ebuka will be in it with the dress.

  1. Ebuka auctions it and donates the proceeds to a Charity for the girl child.

Decent would be a nice touch of humanity.

Or Ebuka keeps it. It’s his and maybe the memory that he still has of it will be one that Nigerians call on to remember #BAAD2017 and the community, the innovation and the joy that comes with the love of two persons joined together in matrimony.

Israeli minister quits over Sabbath row

sraeli Health Minister Yaakov Litzman, whose ultra-Orthodox United Torah Judaism alliance is part of Netanyahu's coalition, gives a press conference at the Sheba Medical Centre at Tel HaShomer near Tel Aviv on September 14, 2016. PHOTO: JACK GUEZ / AFP

An ultra-Orthodox minister in Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s coalition government quit on Sunday in a dispute over work on the Sabbath, the Jewish day of rest.

But a spokesman for health minister Yaakov Litzman told AFP that his United Torah Judaism party would remain in the ruling alliance “at this stage”, preserving Netanyahu’s slim parliamentary majority at least for the time being.

Similar disputes have caused Israeli coalition crises in the past, but Netanyahu was reportedly seeking ways to prevent further fallout.

“I resign from my cabinet position as health minister,” Litzman wrote in his resignation letter, a copy of which was sent to AFP.

“The decision follows the public works conducted on the Sabbath by Israel Railways,” he added.

“I cannot bear ministerial responsibility for the severe harm to one of the eternal values of the Jewish people, which is the Sabbath.”

Litzman will retain his seat in parliament.

The dispute is over railway maintenance work, which is less disruptive to travellers on the Sabbath, when no trains run.

The national rail company says some Sabbath work is necessary in the interests of public safety and to avoid congestion on roads. Litzman says that is untrue.

“To my regret Israel Railways has lately made the Sabbath day national maintenance day,” he told Israeli army radio after handing in his resignation to the cabinet secretary.

“It unnecessarily does all its rail maintenance work on the Sabbath,” he said.

Sabbath begins at sundown on Friday and ends at sundown on Saturday.

Netanyahu had reportedly been seeking to persuade Litzman not to resign by offering backing for various measures the health minister and his supporters favour.

Ultra-Orthodox parties have often played a kingmaker role in Israel’s politics. They control 13 seats in Netanyahu’s coalition, which has 66 out of 120 seats in parliament.

They demand strict adherence to Jewish law, particularly on the Sabbath, when no work is allowed. Electricity must not be turned on or off and engines must not be operated between sunset on Friday and sunset Saturday.

Conte: Liverpool Lucky To Get Draw Vs Chelsea

conte-chelsea-liverpool-completesportsnigeria.com

Antonio Conte has claimed that Liverpool were lucky to get a 1-1 draw against Chelsea in their Premier League clash at Anfield on Saturday.

Chelsea were heading for defeat following former Blues forward Mohamed Salah’s opener on 65 minutes.

But substitute Willian restored parity for Chelsea with five minutes remaining.

“I think we played in a really good way,” Conte said post-match.

“We had a good tactical plan and it was difficult for Liverpool to make chances to score. It was a tactical decision, especially in the first half, to be very solid and then to try to be dangerous in possession. The game changed in the second half. We dominated the game and created many chances to score. Liverpool was lucky to score and then to draw.”

Willian equalised with what appeared to be an attempted cross that left Simon Mignolet stranded in the Liverpool goal.

A laughing Conte said: “I must be honest, I didn’t speak with the players about it but it’s not important, only important to score. We conceded the first goal in an unlucky way. I think it was a fair result but maybe in the end we deserved more.

“We were unlucky with their goal, but a draw was a good result, and maybe we deserved to win at the end.”

Conte stated further: “We must be pleased because we have gone to the next round of the Champions League, and this was our third away game. We have to continue in this way, have good enthusiasm and keep rotating as it is very hard to play every three days.”

Nigerian doctors admit causing obstetric fistulas, injuries to women

Doctors receiving training on VVF repair at SOGON 51st Scientific Conference held in Sokoto recently.

…advocates safe C-section

Nigerian gynaecologists have finally admitted that the growing number of obstetric fistula cases (holes developed between the vagina and rectum or bladder) are as a result of surgical errors caused by doctors and healthcare professionals during medical procedures, most often, during caesarean sections (CS).

They conceded to this fact after several hospital-based studies proved that there is now an increase in iatrogenic fistulas, giving rise to more maternal morbidity and mortality.

Some of the studies were explained in a presentation by Prof. Oladosu Ojenbgede, during a ‘hands-on training on VVF repair workshop’ at the 51st annual scientific conference of The Society of Gynaecology and Obstetrician of Nigeria (SOGON) held at Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital (UDUTH), with support from USAID Fistula Care Plus project.

Dr Olatunji Lawal, who gave the presentation on behalf of Prof. Ojengbede, said a systematic review of articles on fistula done in Nigeria by Ijaiya et al in 2010, in Maiduguri, showed that CS is now among the causes of rising cases of obstetric fistula.

In the study; ‘About 10 per cent of obstetric fistula cases were caused by CS, about 9 per cent were caused by surgical trauma, about 1 per cent by traumatic vaginal laceration from Port Harcourt clinic.

Dr Lawal revealed that at University College Hospital Ibadan (UCH), a 5-year review of obstetric fistula cases was also conducted. “In the studies, about 150 fistula cases were studied, out of these, about 14% were iatrogenic and they had a ureteric injury while about 25% had uretero-cervical-vaginal fistula likely iatrogenic.

The largest review of iatrogenic fistula ever done was by Rasen et al in 2014. They reviewed 5959 cases across about 11 countries and tried to look at how many fistulas occurred from iatrogenic causes. From that review, they discovered about 805 iatrogenic fistulas. They also found that 80 per cent of these iatrogenic fistulas occurred after procedures to address obstetric complications- frequently C-Section, followed by hysterectomy and repair of a ruptured uterus. These procedures were performed by all cadres of health staff”, he stated.

In 2016, Fistula Care Plus Project released a statement document to address this issue called ‘rising trend in iatrogenic fistula. They reviewed all the countries they were in partnership with- about 18 countries, where they looked at the incidents of iatrogenic fistulas and the commonest cause. From the paper, about 42% of the intergenic fistulas came from CS alone. From the graph presented, Nigeria had a 14% rise in iatrogenic fistula.

Concurring with this studies, Chief Consultant Fistula Surgeon, and former Commissioner for Health Zamfara State, Dr Saad Idris, said; “Iatrogenic fistula is fistula that we health practitioners cause during medical procedures. if we can do a safe caesarean section, fistula can be wiped out.

Unfortunately, we have some studies showing 26 per cent cases of iatrogenic fistulas occurring in many hospitals. I have gone to some centres in the southern part of the country and seen where some 30 patients were operated and 20 developed an iatrogenic fistula. It is becoming commoner too in the northern part of the country”.
According to him, training and continuous training is key to eliminating iatrogenic fistula.

“We have to make sure that SOGON tries and train the medical students and house officers. This is because most of the CS done at the general hospitals are not done by specialists. So we should tailor the training not only to the specialists but also to the younger medical officers.

We have realised that early marriage is no longer one of the predisposing factors to developing fistula, so laying emphasis on early marriage alone is wrong. Because sometimes you will see a woman who has delivered eleven times and develops fistula on the 12 time. So any woman at any age can develop fistula if during delivery she fails to go to a place where she can get safe CS. A woman can attend all the ante-natal, go for a C-Section and still develop fistula so it is the time we tell ourselves the truth. The government need to strengthen the health system in order to prevent maternal mortality and morbidity”, he said.

In her presentation, Dr Sadiya Nasir, from the National Obstetric Fistula Centre, Babbar Ruga, Kastina, revealed that in some centres, there has being a record of 13 per cent of iatrogenic fistulas and this is a cause for concern.

She said; “in our centre, we did a two-year review of the fistula cases and we got about 20 per cent of the cases being iatrogenic. But that could be because our centre is a referral centre”.

According to the lead facilitator, Prof. Oladosu Ojengbede, there are now more cases of iatrogenic fistulas.

“Ordinarily, fistulas are supposed to come as a result of complications of difficult labour, but when women have fistula as a result of surgical interventions for some gynaecological condition such as fibroid or prolapse, that is iatrogenic. This shouldn’t be. It is true that every surgery has some element of risk attached to it, but the alarming rate we are seeing this iatrogenic fistula is of great concern to us”, he noted.

According to the Lancet study, C-Section is a necessary intervention for prolonged obstructed labour and prevention of fistula.

But the CS should be done by someone who is competent and should be safely done, Prof. Ojengbede said. He further explained that; “what we are seeing now is either the person doing it is not proficient enough and is not able to safely do it hence the person ends up establishing a hole between the reproductive system and the bladder, leading to fistula. This shows the poor quality of care received by some women and is a step back on the level of care given by such doctors.

That is why we are making it a wake up call to all professional bodies, that people should be made aware that this is a problem that needs to be addressed. This is why this is come up at SOGON -a professional body for gynaecologists so that they can caution their members on the quality of training they provide for their members, be it resident doctors, medical students and others”.

During the training, doctors were told that the primary approach to prevent iatrogenic fistula is prevention.

“we don’t want it to happen at all so the careful study of the anatomies might help the surgeon in preventing this kind of complications. The reproductive and urinary tract act is closely related anatomically so this close relationship exposes the urinary tract to injury during pelvic surgeries. The knowledge of these two anatomy parts play an important part in preventing injury during obstetrical and gynaecological surgeries, Dr Lawal, said.

Doctors had an opportunity to do a hands-on fistula surgery during the session. One of the two patients, Fatima Umar, 20 years, had a fistula which developed 6 months ago as a result of prolonged obstructed labour. She was repaired successfully.

“Initially the fistula tends to look very simple but after the dissection, it turns out to be a very wide one involving a technical procedure. The reason is that the fistula was trying to close but it couldn’t close. Immediately we opened the initial opening, it turned out to become a wider fistula in between the urethra and the bladder so it became a little bit complicated.

We had to do an extensive dissection and made sure we corrected the defect so that the fistula can be closed. I can say she is a very lucky woman”, the lead surgeon, Dr Idris, said.

Explaining the surgery procedure he said; “we used a combined technic developed over the years, we dissected the vaginal wall out from the bladder and urethra, then we did a step by step surgery. We started closure from the angles, then in between, we applied a suture to make sure it is closed. We dilated the urethra, passed the catheter and did a dye test, to confirm that the operation is successful. I also developed a method of putting in a suture at the pubic bone to support the inner suture that we did.

“Now that the woman is dry, we don’t advise her to deliver vaginally again, because when you have a scar tissue, the place is no longer going to be like before. And probably the reason why she developed the fistula was because she had a big baby which was bigger than the pelvic or maybe because of a smaller pelvic so she can develop another fistula if she tried a vaginal delivery. We advocate such women to deliver through Safe C-Section”.

Now that women are beginning to heed the call to deliver at health centres, these fistula surgeons say there is need to ensure that women receive quality health care by providing safe CS and preventing iatrogenic fistulas.

Boko Haram: Troops repel insurgents’ attack in Borno

Troops repel Boko Haram's attack in Borno

The source said that the insurgents attacked the area at about 6 p.m. and shot sporadically in an attempt to infiltrate the town.

Nigerian Army on Saturday repelled an attack by Boko Haram insurgents at Magumeri town, headquarters of Magumeri Local Government Area of Borno.

Guardian reports that the insurgents attacked a military formation at Magumeri, about 32 km from Maiduguri the state capital.

It was also reported that the insurgents attacked the area at about 6 p.m. and shot sporadically in an attempt to infiltrate the town.

The report further revealed that the troops and other security personnel engaged the insurgents and successfully repelled the attack.

The insurgents could not infiltrate the town and they were forced to flee after hours of gun battle.

“No one can ascertain the level of casualties at this time,” he said.

However, Kaka Audu, a member of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) in the area, said that the insurgents attacked the town from the military check point and Bengel area of the town.

Audu disclosed that some of the insurgents that attacked from the Bengel axis managed to enter the town and torched some buildings before they were finally pushed back.

“We came back from a joint patrol with the military around 6 p.m. because intelligence report showed that the insurgents were gathering at the outskirt of the town.

“Few minutes later, the insurgents attacked with full force from two directions. There was reinforcement from the military and the attack was repelled.

Audu noted that powerful echoes of gun shots and explosive devices prompted residents to flee to nearby forest.

The local militia added that most of the residents, who had earlier run to the bush, returned to their homes later.

The military authorities are yet to comment on the incident.

Boko Haram incessant attacks

Boko Haram insurgents had in July attacked an oil prospecting team on exploration exercise in the area.

The insurgents killed several members of the team and abducted five staff of University of Maiduguri.

The insurgents had carried out several attacks part of which were successful suicide bombings in Maiduguri and other parts of Borno in 2017.

Juja: MP Jaguar involved in road accident

This is not the first time the lawmaker is involved in an accident.

Starehe Constituency lawmaker Charles Kanyi Njaguar’s motorcade was on Sunday morning involved in a grisly road accident near Juja, Kiambu County.

The lawmaker’s bodyguard was injured in the morning incident. Details of the incident, however, remain scanty.

This is not the first time the lawmaker’s vehicles have been involved in an accident.

In March, a man was killed by mob justice at his rally in Ziwani area after he allegedly stole from someone.

Mr Jaguar came out to deny that the allegations that the late was killed at his rally and barely a week later, the Kigeugeu hit maker has grabbed the headlines once again.

Jaguar’s Range Rover Sport, KCB 808J hit two men Joseph Maingi and Mugo Abdalla who were riding on a motorbike, killing them on the spot along the Makutano – Sagana highway.

At the time of accident, the car was being driven by a lady and according to witnesses, she was driving from Sagana heading to Makutano while the two dead motorists were headed to Sagana.

They were almost joining the highway when the car hit them.  The two young men fell on one side while the motorbike they were using was thrown in the opposite direction.

EDITORIAL: On The Whistle-blowing Policy

As part of its effort to carry Nigerians along in the anti-corruption crusade, the Muhammadu Buhari administration, in February 2017, instituted a whistle-blowing policy. The idea is to encourage anyone with vital information that can possibly expose corrupt practices and, in particular, lead to the recovery of stolen money, to come forward. To make it even more attractive, the government offered five per cent of the recovered money to the whistle-blower.

Before now, they were known as police informants who disclosed information to the security agencies which ultimately led to the resolving of tough security issues. It took a life of its own and an international dimension with the celebrated cases of the American, Edward Snowden, Czech Libor Michalek and Australian Julian Assange of the WikiLeaks fame.

Who is a whistle-blower? He or she is a person who exposes any kind of information or activity that is deemed illegal, unethical, or not correct within an organization that is either private or public. The information of alleged wrongdoing can be classified in many ways: violation of company policy or rules, law, regulation, or threat to public interest or national security, as well as fraud, and corruption. This, in general terms, is the definition of a whistle-blower.

Still further, those who choose to become whistle-blowers can bring information or allegations to surface either internally or externally. Internally, a whistle-blower can bring his or her accusations to the attention of other people within the accused organization such as an immediate supervisor. Externally, a whistle-blower can bring allegations to light by contacting a third party outside of an accused organization such as the media, government, law enforcement, or those who are concerned. Whistle-blowers, however, take the risk of facing stiff reprisal and retaliation from those who are accused or alleged of wrongdoing.

That is why it is often said that to be a whistle-blower takes bravery.  A good example of this is Assange who is, today, a wanted fugitive not because the information he revealed was wrong but because he stepped on very sensitive toes some of them powerful countries.

Because of the risk involved, security agencies go out of their way to protect those who give them vital information especially if it leads to a major break. However, legal protection for whistle-blowing varies, from where and how secrets were revealed to how they eventually became published or publicized. In Nigeria, if the information is not accurate or is misleading, the whistle-blower stands the risk of prosecution.

Unfortunately, whistle-blowing can be an instrument of blackmail and witch-hunt. Someone may decide to use it to get back at a stingy relation as was the case of the former Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Engineer Yakubu.  Also, because of the pecuniary benefits attached to it, it is almost becoming an industry in Nigeria with the security agencies themselves doing brisk business with the proceeds. The most notorious case is what has come to be known as Ikoyigate where tens of millions of dollars were stashed away in a private home in Ikoyi, a highbrow residential area of Lagos by a security chief. It was a major break that left not just Nigerians but also the international community aghast at the audacity of corruption in the country. There is another angle to it. The number of whistle-blowers claiming to have been involved in the disclosure is multiplying by the day to include lawyers angling to be part of the case for obvious reasons.

Considering the amount involved, five percent of more than $40 million dollars, a princely sum indeed, even the operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC)  themselves want a piece of the action. The delay in resolving the matter so that the money can be released to the whistle-blowers, in our opinion, is deliberate. They, too, want to be settled. Otherwise, they know who they got the information from the first time. That, in itself, is also corruption that may affect the policy as a whole as people may be unwilling to come forward with information.

Even worse is the situation in which it has become a media event and not many people will buy into the publicity the whole drama is generating. It is supposed to be covert operation. The identity of the persons are not expected to be known. But with lawyers and the media getting involved, the stakes have gone too high for some to include risk to life.

This is where we think the government should talk to the security agencies. This policy is about to go the way of most eloquent policies in the country, messed up by bad implementation processes. If the security agencies want the money, then they can go and be the whistle-blowers themselves. If what they want is information to enable them to do their work diligently, then they should take their eyes off the money. This, in our view, is important if the whistle-blowing policy must stand a chance of succeeding.
