Cross-Over Night: Enenche Releases 2018 Prophecies

Enenche

The Senior Pastor, Dunamis International Gospel Centre (DIGC), Abuja, Dr Paul Enenche, has released 2018 prophecies declaring the New Year as the year of open doors.

Enenche predicted during the Cross Over Night service in Abuja that the year would mark a new beginning for the nation and its people as well as supernatural opening of new opportunities.

He added that 2018 would also be a year that God would release severe judgment upon the wicked and those holding the country to ransom.

According to him, it is a season that God shall do what he wants irrespective of what men want to restore the years of lost that the country has experienced.

“There shall be drastic shift in dimension in all realms in an unpredictable manner,’’ the cleric said.

On his part, Special Apostle Funsho Oshoro, the Chairman, Cherubim and Seraphim Movement, Abuja District Headquarters, said in his message that Nigerians should be upright in all they do.

Oshoro called on Nigerians to transform themselves in the year 2018, adding that the Federal Government will not be able to do it alone.

However, he admonished Nigerians to be politically and spiritually matured in all they do.

According to him, those that are in authority should do it well because if they do it right, automatically the Lord will see them through the year 2018.

“There is a lot of blessings but we must do it right with God; we must know him; we must plan and set a goal for ourselves for that is what we desire from God.

“Forget the past and failure of 2017 so as to be purposeful; get connected to God; walk with wise men that have evidence of prosperity in the sense that they have accomplished a lot.

“The message is not for the church alone. The message is for the whole country,’’ Oshoro said.

Ndidi Gets Midfield Rival As Leicester City Finally Complete Adrien Silva Deal

Super Eagles of Nigeria midfield anchor Wilfred Ndidi will battle for his position after Leicester City finally completed the signing of Portugal international Adrien Silva four months after failing to make his deadline day switch.

Sporting CP announced the £22million sale of the Portugal midfielder had been agreed, but FIFA rejected Leicester’s application to register Silva after they reportedly missed the deadline by 14 seconds.

Attempts to appeal the decision were unsuccessful, leaving Silva to train alongside his new team-mates without the prospect of playing.

“Of course I had to stay positive. In our job, when you have a period like this it’s very up and down,” the 28-year-old told Leicester’s official website.

“You have to keep a positive mentality and that’s what I’ve tried to do. I keep my mind focused on my job and what I love to do.

“My team-mates have been great for me and keep pushing to keep my mentality up. They have been very important for me. I see a great future in front of us.”

Ndidi has been a super regular for the Foxes, starting each of their 21 Premier League games this season with exceptional reviews of his performance and he’s expected to be preferred ahead of Silva.

Silva is not eligible for the New Year’s Day match against Huddersfield Town but could make his debut in Saturday’s FA Cup third-round trip to Fleetwood Town.

The Euro 2016 winner started three league games for Sporting this season before the transfer saga and also helped them to book a place in the group stage of the Champions League with a play-off win over Steaua Bucharest.

Since arriving in Leicester, Silva has seen the manager who signed him – Craig Shakespeare – sacked and replaced by Claude Puel.

The Foxes sit eighth in the Premier League following Saturday’s 2-1 loss at Liverpool.

Tech: Here's when Google, Samsung, and LG's 2018 flagships will potentially launch (GOOGL)

null

A recent leak gives a hint of when many 2018 premium smartphones may leave the realm of rumors.

  • A recently leaked chart appears to reveal the months when some of next year's smartphones will launch.
  • The devices on the list are all expected to run Qualcomm's Snapdragon 845 processor.
  • The release dates of many of the devices had already been rumored.

As 2017 rapidly comes to a close, many smartphone manufacturers are likely in hyper drive, putting the finishing touches on their 2018 devices. A recently leaked chart may give a better idea of when those devices will actually launch.

Assuming the leaked document, which was originally shared on the Chinese social media platform Weibo and was later translated by Gizmo China, is accurate, you can expect Samsung's Galaxy S9 and S9+ and LG's G7 and G7+ in February, Samsung Galaxy Note 9 and LG V40 in September, and Google's Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL in October.

The leaked document is comprised of devices that are expected to run Qualcomm's new Snapdragon 845 processor, which is designed for high-end smartphones. Thus, the devices on the list are all flagship-tier products.

Expect a flurry of phones in the fall

Some of the dates on the list aren't much of a surprise. The release dates of many of the devices included on it have already been floating around in rumors. And some companies' release schedules are fairly predictable; both Samsung and LG, for example, typically announce new devices during Mobile World Congress (MWC) in late February.

But the list also offers an outlook on upcoming devices from some of the smaller phone manufacturers. Between April and August, consumers can expect to see launches of Xiaomi's Mi 7, HTC's U12, the OnePlus 6, Nubia's Z18, Sony's Xperia XZ Pro-A, and the Nokia 10. Some of those devices, however, may not land in the US.

Things should pick up in the fall. In addition to the Note 9 and the V40 in September, the list suggests we should expect to see Xiaomi's Mi Mix 3 launched internationally. In addition to the Pixel launches in October — which should follow the unveiling of Android P (whose official nickname, we're guessing, will be Pop-Tart) — other potential launches that month could include Nubia's Z18S, Sony's Xperia XZ2, and HTC's U12+.

Finally, the Moto Z (2019 edition) may be announced in November and the OnePlus 6T and Samsung's Galaxy W2019 in December.

While the list does fall in step with the typical launch cycles for most of the included companies, particularly Samsung, Google, and LG, none of these devices are confirmed at this time.

Give all Nigerians equal protection, Ohaneze youths to FG

By Anayo Okoli
UMUAHIA – Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council, OYC, has called on the Federal Government to protect every Nigerian irrespective of tribe or religion, lamenting the number Igbo youths killed last year in the hands of soldiers of operation Python Dance.

OYC also lamented that most Igbo Youths lost their investments estimated at over N63 trillion in Northern Nigeria, South West, especially the Igbo traders, when their were gutted by fire as well as due to demolition of shops by the Lagos State Government.

And to minimize such huge loss, the group called on Ndigbo to relocate their business headquarters to Igboland and make South East the economic hub of Nigeria.

Rising from its end of year meeting in Umuahia, OYC said that “Igbo Youths mourn our Youths who fell victim during the operation Python Dance and those killed in the North East. We call on the Federal Government to protect all citizens no matter the circumstances”.

A statement signed by its Secretary General, Mazi Okwu Nnabuike and the National Vice President, Obinna Achionye, the group urged “the Federal Government to resolve the issues surrounding the hike of petroleum products prices.

“We commend the South East Governors especially the Enugu state Governor, for rising to the occasion to protect Ndigbo from Fulani herdsmen, Governor Umahi for his developmental strides in Ebonyi, Governor Obiano for preservation of Igbo political identity, Governor Ikpeazu for his Made in Abia Products and Governor Okorocha on his developmental strides in Imo. We urge all the Governors of South East to do more for the people”.

OYC also urged Ndigbo to expect tougher times in 2018, to be prepared to adjust to the economic realities on the ground.

The group also alleged that it has uncovered plot by some unnamed few Igbo leaders to create chaos in the leadership of OYC and alleged plot to remove its National President, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro and called on the South East Governors to warn this unnamed Igbo leaders “because any attempt to dislodge the Leadership of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council Worldwide will spell doom for them as Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro tenure expires in December 2018”.

FRSC: Lagos-Ibadan Standard Gauge will bring succour to the Apapa gridlocks

FRSC boss wants to increase traffic fines by at least 800%

Omeje said that the new rail line would help to reduce the influx of articulated vehicles to Apapa and its environs.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) says the new Lagos-Ibadan Standard Gauge will bring succour to the perennial Apapa gridlocks when completed.

Mr Hyginus Omeje, the Lagos State Sector Commander of FRSC, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Monday.

Omeje said that the new rail line would help to reduce the influx of articulated vehicles to Apapa and its environs.

“The new Lagos-Ibadan rail line, when completed, will help us resolve Apapa gridlocks.

“The train will help in evacuating the containers in bulk instead of using trucks to pick them, thereby reducing traffic at the Apapa Port,” he said.

According to him, one train can take about 20 to 30 containers off the Port to either Ogun or Oyo state to decongest the Apapa community.

“Through that we can start having dry port somewhere in Ibadan, Ogun and other neighbouring states,” he said.

The FRSC boss also said that the development would reduce the number of trucks moving into Lagos on daily basis.

He said that the project would also reduce the volume of traffic on Lagos-Ibadan expressway and this would curb crashes at the corridor.

Omeje advised drivers and other road users to drive safely and consider other road users to avoid crashes.

He appealed to the motorists to shun speed, drunk driving and other habits that could cause crashes on the road in the course of celebration.

NAN reports that the Nigeria Railway Corporation (NRC) said that it had commenced transporting containers from Apapa Port to Ebute Metta and Ijoko on the outskirts of Ogun State to ease gridlocks along Apapa axis in Lagos.

Mr Jerry Oche, the NRC Lagos Railway District Manager, said that the operations were initiated to ease congestion of articulated vehicles along Apapa Port.

Oche said the corporation had developed a time table for freight movements to either NRC Ebute Metta junction terminal or to Ijoko in Ogun.

“We have concentrated on moving containers from Apapa to Ijoko to curb usual traffic along Apapa and its environs.

“We have time table and schedules for our two trips of 20 containers each per day.

“About 40 containers were being transported to Ebute Metta terminal on daily basis to keep off trailers, trucks and all articulated vehicles from the road,’’ Oche said.

According to him, apart from ship, train mass transit has the capacity to transport freight from area to another without delay or damage.

He said that the corporation had discussed with three stakeholders dealing with freight at Apapa Port on the new services by the NRC.

Oche said that the freight shuttle services would reduce accidents and reduce the heavy traffic caused by articulated vehicles due to break down along the roads.

The district manager said that the shuttle services would also go beyond Ijoko and be extended to Kajola and other terminus along Abeokuta axis.

NAN recalled that Mr Rotimi Amaechi, the Minister of Transportation, had said that the Federal Government was committed to deliver the Lagos-Ibadan Standard Gauge project by December.

Amaechi disclosed this at Papalanto in Ogun during his monthly visit and oversight functions at the constructions site on Dec 12, 2017.

According to him, the government is urging the Chinese Civil Engineering Construction Company (CCECC) to fast-track the project for the benefit of the people by 2018.

Fuel scarcity: queue eases, price remain high in Benin

Motorists in Benin, the Edo capital, have started to heave a sign of relief as long queues that characterised filling stations in recent weeks in the metropolis have started disappearing.

Newsmen who went round to monitor situation in the city, report that although the price is remained high, motorist now drive into the stations with ease to buy fuel.

Newsmen discovered that some of the stations that did not open for business during the scarcity, have started dispensing the product owing to it availability in these stations.

With the exception of the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) mega station, which still has long queues, others are devoid of queues.

A motorist, Oladele Toba, who spoke with newsmen, expressed joy over this development and said: “the visible queue you see in the mega station is because they dispense at N143 per liter, even below the government regulated price of N145.”

John Omoruyi, while also commending the efforts made so far by the relevant government agencies to see to the end of scarcity of the product, appealed that efforts must be made to see that others selling above the regulated price reverted.

“Of course, we are happy that things are beginning to ease as regards the supply and sales of the PMS, especially when one considers what Nigerians have been through over the matter these past weeks.

“while we commend those responsible for this, they must also see to it that an end is put to the continued exploitation of Nigerians by these stations which still sell above the official price per litre.

“Sincerely speaking, I do not see why they should continue to do so, especially when there has been no price adjustment by the government,” he said.

Newsmen report that filling stations selling above the official price dispensed the product at between N210 and N235 per litre.

Meanwhile, activities at the black marketers in the metropolis have began to wane as supply and availability of the product have improved.

The Edo Government, had on Sunday, announced that 18 trucks carrying 720,993 litres of petroleum products had arrived the state to ease the lingering fuel scarcity.

The state Commissioner for Solid Minerals, Oil & Gas, Mr Joseph Ugheoke, who made the disclosure, warned filling stations against hoarding the product.

The commissioner said the products were being discharged at the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC)’s mega stations as well as stations of major distributors across the state.

He said that the product would be sold at the official rate of N145 per litre.

Ugheoke said that a team from the state government and the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) would go round to enforce this and sanction erring filling stations.

Change Or Nigerians Will Change You In 2019, Mbaka Warns Buhari

Mbaka

Enugu – Fiery Roman Catholic preacher and Spiritual Director of Adoration Ministries Enugu (AMEN), Rev. Fr. Ejike Mbaka has warned President Muhammadu Buhari to change, or else Nigerians will change him in 2019.

Mbaka issued this warning to the President last night at the 2017 Crossover Night of his Ministry at its Adoration Ground Emene Enugu.

At a similar forum in 2014, Fr. Mbaka prophesied the defeat of then incumbent President, Dr Goodluck Jonathan of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2015 general elections and his replacement by General Muhammadu Buhari of All Progressives Congress (APC).

That prophecy came to pass.

But, speaking on Sunday night, Fr. Mbaka expressed disapproval with the leadership of President Buhari, lamenting that Nigerians have suffered untold hardship.

He said Buhari must change quickly or else Nigerians will vote him out of office in 2019.

“He should change quickly or else Nigerians will change him in 2019” Mbaka said.

The preacher said Buhari is a good man, but he has been hijacked by a cabal.

Mbaka said Buhari should not go for a second term and advised the Northerners to look for another person in 2019.

He suggested that somebody like Gombe State Governor, Ibrahim Dankwanbo should be supported by the North for president in 2019.

Mbaka said he does not know the party Dankwanbo belongs, but has gone to Gombe state and seen he is doing well.

Jonathan: Ex-President urges Nigerians to only speak positively in 2018

Jonathan urges Nigerians to only speak positively in 2018

He said it is important that Nigerians always speak positively about the country no matter what happens.

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has advised Nigerians to stop speaking negatively about the country and allow their speech to add value instead.

In a New Year message posted on his official Facebook page on January 1, 2018, the former president it is important that Nigerians always speak positively about the country no matter what happens.

He also urged citizens to unite and live in peace so that the country can achieve success in 2018.

His statement read, "We all love Nigeria and want the best for her, so no matter what may happen in, to and about Nigeria, never use your mouth to speak negatively about Nigeria.

"From our mouths must proceed good things about Nigeria. Our speech must add value to Nigeria. When we do this, 2018 will emerge better than 2017 especially if the first thing you say when you get up each morning is God bless Nigeria.

"This year 2018, it is also my prayer that the dreams and aspirations of Nigerians will be empowered. That our people will look up with confidence that Nigeria has a place for each and everyone one of them.

"I also urge that as we embrace the new year, we embrace unity even amongst ourselves, and may we not forget, that for Nigeria to truly succeed, we have to succeed together.

"Happy New Year to you and your family from my family and I. GEJ."

New Year: You have more power over Nigerian music than you think

Davido, Wizkid & other winners at 2017 award ceremony

In 2018, we can complain less as consumers of the art, and do something to ensure the quality gets upped.

There’s a lot to fix in 2018, and we’ll get there.

We’ve rung in the New Year in style. All across the world, people wined, danced and used fireworks to light up the sky. It is beautiful to see, almost made me cry.

2018 brings with it a renewed vitality and chance to improve, right the wrongs of the previous year, and plan for greatness within this calendar year. It’s a time of reflection strategy and contemplation. This life, after all, is the only one we have, and to live it well, we need the best of our efforts to ensure the journey gets sweeter, and we leave marks and a legacy in our passing.

Mayorkun is already in the New Year. After a great run in 2017, guess what the DMW star did? He announced a new album. Be like Mayorkun people, be intentional!

The Nigerian music industry in 2017 was interesting. From the start of the year to its end, we had one sound formation dominating the culture – ‘Pon pon’. This sound which Mr Eazi introduced from Ghana, was hacked by Runtown, and then Davido for some of the year’s most interesting music. It wasn’t until the final quarter of the year, did life outside ‘Pon pon’ begin to pop. And while we might all have our reservations and criticism about the trend, we will have to look back on that year as an example of the good (or bad?) that herd mentality can offer.

2018 offers something different. It’s a clean slate right now. At the time of writing this story, nobody has owned the year. It’s a clean slate, designed to be usurped by any act. There is no hit record of 2018 yet. Wizkid and Davido’s exploits are all in 2017.

It will be interesting to see who dominates this year, and what sound they use to achieve that top spot. Will highlife continue being a staple of our musicians? Will they finally unlock the potential of Salsa? Or give Trap a better representation within the country?

Much of this rests upon your shoulders. You, the fan and music enthusiast are a part of the reason why the music follows a pattern. You complain about the monotony of the country’s artistic efforts, but do nothing about it. You appear in comment sections and street corners to lambast the music for being too ‘dumb, but you never ask the magical question, “How can I be a part of the solution?”

Yes, you can be a part of it. Musicians in Nigeria make music after studying the patterns of the success of another artist. If a guy makes a record that bangs, you’ll be sure to find 20 other artists remixing that song. To change that, you have to ensure that the artists who make the type of music you love blow too. When you find a new artist making experimental stuff that speaks to your soul, be sure to promote that guy. Talk about him, share his art on all your platforms and ensure that it gets around. That way, more people get to experience it and you never know, he might just blow. That’s how you make a difference.

And how about the artists who don’t give their best to the fans when they go live on stage after you pay for their performance? The solution is simple. You have to reject mediocrity, and follow them up with that same energy!

This is because many Nigerians are not artists. They are simply hustlers; businessmen who are more concerned about increasing profit by cutting costs to the barest minimum. Artistry is a myth to this people. They take no pride in it, hence they only lean on their bank account balances as a validation of their work.

These people take no pride in performing. They simply have found the sweet spot where they can do the barest minimum, which would cost them nothing. They treat the emotions and expectation of the fans as an avenue to make money. Everything else is abstract.

And the Nigerian society helps them get away with it. The artists understand that a huge amount of Nigerians who attend these concerts have not experienced better. They are simply just happy to experience their favourite artist on stage. So the performers take advantage and deliver horrible performances.

Combine this mentality and the entitlement of our stars, and you would see why we have a system that perpetuates mediocrity. One very popular artist once exclaimed that the fans should be happy to even see them in person.

The only solution to this is for fans to view these artists as businesses who have promised to provide a service. When the service is of substandard quality, they should give the negative feedback. Call out these artists as you would a bank or a telecommunication firm. Create enough negative PR to convince promoters to not book these acts. If that happens, the artists’ business will be affected, and they will be forced to make changes by improving the quality of their service.

In 2018, we can complain less as consumers of the art, and do something to ensure the quality gets upped. You can have an impact, no matter how small. After all, this life is just one, and if we decide to find happiness in music, the art should be top quality.

Libyan, IOM, Libya returnees

Benin – Edo State Government has confirmed receiving no fewer than 1,872 Libya returnees in less than two months.

The returnees who were among thousands of other Nigerians airlifted by the Federal Government, in collaboration with the International Organisation for Migration are being resettled by the state government.

It would be recalled that the state started the airlifting of its citizens on November 7, 2017.

The state government had set up a task force on anti-human trafficking, led by the Commissioner for Justice, Prof. Yinka Omorogbe, to help the victims reintegrate themselves back into society.

It also organised skills acquisition programmes for the returnees and placed them on a stipend for three months.

The Secretary of the task force, Mrs. Oyemwense Abieyuwa while speaking with our correspondent in Benin said a new batch of 49 retunees, comprising 37 males, 11 females and a baby, was received last Friday.

According to Abieyuwa, “We have about 1,800 returnees. Its operation has been going on smoothly to the glory of God. We have been improving our operation.

“Medically, they (returnees) are being attended to. In terms of logistics, we are trying to keep up to ensure that they are properly rehabilitated.”

She said that the task force had enlarged its scope of medical care and counselling, while the first batch of returnees had received their stipend.

“Other batches will receive theirs as and when due. The members of the task force are working day and night so as to get the bank details as accurately as possible,” she also said.

Abieyuwa further stated that the task force had taken steps to ward off impersonators, who may want to capitalise on the opportunities created for the returnees.

“We have had some experiences but we have also been very vigilant and we have our staff on ground to ensure that persons do not come here to impersonate.

“So, what we do is to be very vigilant. Only those we bring back from Lagos will be taken care of.”

How To Stop Illegal Migration, By Jibunor

Jibunoh

Lagos – Newton Jibunoh, the founder of FADE (Fight Against Desert Encroachment) Foundation, has proffered ways to stop the 21st century slavery, epitomised by the dehumanisation of Nigerians in Libya.

He advocated catching up with the recruitment cartel in the country and getting families involved as ways to tackle to issue of illegal migration in the country.

Jibuno stated this during the Anti-Human Trafficking and Slavery media chat organised by the foundation at Didi Museum, Victoria Island, Lagos.

The environmentalist, who remarked that though it might not be possible to overtake the cartels, noted that getting the families, villages and towns together as well as finding a way of involving the states, could be a very good starting point.

“They don’t just come from nowhere; the families know and some of them encourage them because out of every 10 that goes, one would succeed. How do we catch up with the cartel? We need to start showcasing something else to parents, to families and individuals in villages.

“Since we now have all these information, let us find a way of letting the parents, communities and state governments see that this is what you experience when you go. If we pass this information, we may be starting the process of catching up with the cartel; because the cartel is a multi-million dollar business. They have their headquarters in Benin, with branches in Asaba, Onitsha, Aba and they get them to swear to an oath.”

Noting that it was not just the slavery that was shown on television, but the deaths that occur on regularly basis, he stressed the need to stand on a strong legal platform to fight the cartel, without which it would be a lost battle.

Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Special Assistant to the President on Diaspora, disclosed that the government, in conjunction with other agencies, would be arranging evacuations in Libya with a February deadline.

According to her, by then, every Nigerian stranded in Libya and willing to come back would be returned home.

While recalling the days when foreigners struggle to come to Nigeria to work, Gabriel Osakwe, a lawyer, asked: “How do we make Nigeria better?”

According to him, the bulk of the answer lies with the government.

If we improve our lives here in Nigeria, nobody would want to go out, he said.

“Nigeria is not like America or Europe where individuals play fundamental roles in the economy of their countries. We run a government-dominated economy. Therefore, if we talk from now till tomorrow, if the government does not hold it as a priority, nothing would happen.”

For Abiola Kosoko, Oba of Ebutega, Ikorodu, it is important that we keep talking about it through billboards, more jingles and more of the things that would make people believe that they don’t need to travel through the desert.

He explained that people could start life in Nigeria with less than half of the money they pay for the illegal migration.

“I started my own business with what I got from my NYSC which is just N45,000. And today, I own the biggest connections of boat operations in Ikorodu. I have a functional zoo; I have an event centre. As I speak now, I employ about 242 people. Put visa aside, put education aside, what can you do?” said he.

After narrating his personal experience 21 years ago as an illegal immigrant, Rev. Emmanuel Okonkwo of Icon Foundation said “to stay ahead of the cartels, the authorities need to stop drug traffickers because they use the same route, the same mechanism and the same mode of operations.”

Netflix's Bright: The success of streaming movies is not enough to kill cinema culture

In the future, more people will want to watch movies from the comfort of their homes but going to the cinemans will always be a different experience.

Bright, an urban fantasy movie about a world where orcs, humans, elves and other creatures live together is the latest of Netflix's releases stirring up a storm.

With its straight-to-tv content, Netflix is changing the way the world watches movies and giving cinemas a run for their money.

Its newest big project, Bright stars Will Smith as a Los Angeles Police Department police officer who teams up with a rookie police officer who is an Orc, fighting crime and social ills in a world of both human and mythical creatures.

The film was released worldwide on Netflix on December 22, 2017. Since it became available for streaming, the movie has received mostly negative reviews.

Critics have bashed the writing, cinematography and what they perceive as heavy-handed social commentary that forms a major subplot.

ALSO READ: The 25 worst movies of 2017, according to critics

Guess who doesn’t seem to care about all of this. The only person who matters; The average Netflix viewer.

Netflix is winning, baby

Nielsen disclosed that during Bright’s debut weekend from Dec. 22–24, some 11 million people in the US were watching the film AT ANY GIVEN MINUTE.

About 3.9 million of those viewers were ages 18–34, and 7 million were 18–49. About half, or 56%, of the crowd during the three days were male.

Ratings of the movie by the audience on platforms like Rotten Tomatoes now hover around 90%. One fan wrote in his personal review, "Will Smith is the experienced old hand and the charm. Joel Edgerton (totally hidden in makeup and therefore working twice as hard) is the sympathetic rookie willing to risk it all to prove himself worthy."

"…. And Noomi Rapace (this woman is a force of nature!) plays a force of nature. And … it works. It comes outta nowhere and it works. It's a lot to take in, sure, but zowie. Time will only improve this wine."

Bright was supposed to be Netflix’s first blockbuster movie, as the cast and subject matter may have already suggested.

ALSO READ: The Godfather trilogy is coming to Netflix in January

But the scale of its success has many asking questions about why critics have been so harsh on something that the audience clearly enjoys.

Movies do not enjoy as much success as they used to.

With the rare exception of successful franchise releases and big-bang blockbusters, now for competition, they have on-demand services like Netflix that provide original content at the viewer's fingertips whenever they wish.

Whichever way you look at it, the idea of Netflix making its own blockbusters threatens anyone who is interested in the cinema business.

The reviews do not match the numbers

This is why there is some credence in the conspiracy theory that certain powers that be are influencing the reviews to ensure that Bright fails.

Some believe that vested interests in the cinema space are influencing Bright’s reviews to discourage the audience from watching it and make sure it fails.

In the larger sense, the idea is that if the audience believes that Netflix’s original movies are a waste, then they will stay in the one place where that is built for exhilarating blockbusters— the cinemas.

ALSO READ: The 10 best TV series of 2017

If this turns out to be true, it really comes across as a hare-brained scheme from an episode of Looney Tunes than something that a corporate enterprise would adopt.

Ironically, while original movie and blockbusters on streaming platforms will threaten the domination of cinemas, the success of movies like Bright is not enough to destroy cinema culture.

Can the cinemas withstand the strength of streaming?

Cinema culture refers to the way of life or practices that exist around the act of going to the cinemas to consume content.

Since the first silent films were made, cinemas have become more than just a place to see movies.

Young and old, going to the cinemas is a restful experience that implies much more than seeing a movie.

There’s food in the mix, social interaction and a sense of leisure that sustains entire industries from tourism to the performing arts.

It is why according to a recent survey, 13 percent of Americans go to the movies about once a month, the US film industry is the leading film market in the world.

That sense of leisure was worth over 10.31 billion dollars in box office revenue in 2016.

That’s big money, enough that Companies like Ticketmaster, Uber and fast food outlets like KFC reap heavy profits from models that they have designed to take advantage of the millions who watch movies across the US every year.

52% of Americans already prefer watching movies at home and streaming platforms like Hulu and Netflix are providing a much-needed alternative.

ALSO READ: Game of Thrones is the most pirated TV show of 2017

However, America’s cinemas are enough of a cultural and economic phenomenon to stay profitable for the next few decades, even if that means a lot of changes will be made.

What is the Nigerian perspective?

In Nigeria, Jason Njoku’s iRoko is the leading movie streaming service.

To be fair, he and other new entrants like may not be able to provide the same competition that Netflix offers, thanks to broadband penetration and the fact that cinema culture is still growing in its earliest stages.

Netflix has also created a presence in Nigeria, but pricing and penetration have precluded it from having a major market presence.

Also, projects like Netflix’s Bright require heavy investment and the best chance of recouping all that money in Nigeria is still the cinemas.

So, yea, FilmOne and the rest of them can rest easy.

Iwobi Disappointed With West Brom Draw, Wishes Arsenal Fans Happy New Year

By Johnny Edward: Super Eagles star Alex Iwobi has expressed his disappointment with Arsenal’s 1-1 Premier League draw against West Bromwich Albion at the Hawthorns on Sunday, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.

A late penalty in the 89th minute from Jay Rodriguez earned West Brom a point from the game six minutes after Alexis Sanchez’s free-kick had deflected off James McClean into the Baggies net to give Arsenal the lead.

The result means Arsenal are yet to win back-to-back games away from home this season while West Brom are without a win in 19 matches, equalling the longest run in the Premier League since Aston Villa’s sequence ended in January 2016.

Iwobi who returned to the Gunners’ starting line-up in the absence of Mesut Ozil featured for 74 minutes before being taken off for Danny Welbeck.

He however thanked Arsenal fans for their support and wished them a splendid New Year.

“Disappointing To Only Get A Point Out Of Today. Thank You For Your Support This Year. Enjoy Your New Year Celebrations! 🔴⚪ #AFC #17,” Iwobi tweeted after the game.

Arsenal are fifth in the English Premier League table with 38 points from 21 games. They will host Chelsea in their next game at the Emirates on Wednesday with West Brom facing West Ham on Tuesday.

N2.5m Fraud: Ex-Katsina Perm Sec Bags Seven Years Imprisonment

Sule Yusuf Saulawa

KATSINA – Sule Yusuf Saulawa, a one-time Permanent Secretary with the Katsina State Government, was on Friday, sentenced to seven years imprisonment without option of fine by the state high court for ‘Advanced fee fraud’ charge.

INDEPENDENT gathered that the duo, was said to have, sometime in 2015, falsely obtained N2.5 million from one  Alhaji Musa Baba, now late, assuring him of a fertilizer contract from  the state government.

Saulawa was also said to have encouraged Alhaji Baba who was Chairman of Many Agro-Allied and Chemicals Company Nigeria Limited and Diamond Fertilizer Nigeria Limited, to write a proposal seeking for the supply of the said fertilizer.

However, the state government in a letter endorsed by Dr. Mustapha Inuwa, the Secretary to the State Government, and sent to the court, denied the said contract.

In his ruling, Justice Sanusi Tukur, slammed the sentence on Saulawa after finding him guilty of advanced fee fraud charge that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission(EFCC) had brought before the court against Saulawa.

His words, “Saulawa did not deny collecting the money from Alhaji Baba even when he knew that the said contract was a hoax. If you (Saulawa) are not dissatisfied with my judgment, go for appeal court.”

He said the sentence was the minimum allowed under Section 1(1)(a) of the Advance Fee Fraud and other Related offences Act, 2006 and punishable under Section 1(3)of the same Act, which Saulawa’s offence falls under.

The judge noted that neither did Alhaji Baba secure the contract nor did he get his N2.5 million back from Saulawa, prompting him (Alhaji Baba) to petition the EFCC, hence the seven years sentence.
