Hot Exchanges Between El-Rufai And Bruce Over Rail Project

Nasir-El-Rufai

There seems to be no end to the hot exchange of words between Nasir el-Rufai, Kaduna State governor, and Ben Bruce, senator representing Bayelsa East, in the Upper Chamber.

The latest exchange between the duo is over the Abuja- Kaduna rail project, which the Senator wants President Muhammadu Buhari to acknowledge the contribution of Ex-President Goodluck Jonathan to the realization of the project.

Bruce in a tweet on his twitter handle @benmurraybruce wrote: “I hope President @MBuhari remembers to say thank you to former President @GEJonathan for the train ride he enjoyed in Kaduna. Some of us haven’t forgotten that that achievement was ENTIRELY the handiwork of the Jonathan government. Nigeria should give honour to whom honour is due.”

But in his reply, el-Rufai fired back in another tweet “Wrong Distinguished Senator! The Obasanjo administration which Jonathan was not part of, designed, raised the financing and started the EPC of the Lagos-Kano dual track-standard gauge rail system, and the Abuja Light Rail. Yar’Adua-Jonathan stalled both projects for two years.

His reply prompted Bruce to challenge the governor to a debate over the issue, which el-Rufai dismissed.

According to the governor, “There is nothing to debate. Facts cannot be debated. Opinions are free. While the Obasanjo administration was conceiving the rail modernization programme, Sen Ben-Bruce was organising beauty contests and Jonathan was a deputy governor. I am not cluelessly, common-sensical.

Intra-personal tension

By Pastor Okokon Ating

Just as we have factors causing inter personal tension in marriage so also are many things drift-ing one into self tension in marriage. These are the self inflicting problems or challenges that do not allow many women and men in the course of their marriages to have peace or rest of mind.

Sometimes some may at the long run, resolve to quit when they feel they can’t bear the pain and shame of the problems erupted in the marriage anymore.

The intra-personal tension is one of the dangerous weapons Satan himself uses to cheat people who do not know their stand in the Lord and what he can do for them who are in the faith. Intra-personal tension goes along with self-pity and anger of the soul. Uncountable per-sonalities found in this situation hang themselves easily.

They also take un-usual decisions which may not favor them in their marriage lives. Intra-per-sonal tension creates deep wound in the soul of the sufferer. The only healing balm to the person suffering from intra-personal tension is when there is speedy answer to the particular ‘sickness’ causing the pains. Intra-personal tension in marital life can be caused by the following facts:

Spouses unfruitfulness:

As at the time of writing this book, a sister brought news to me that a newly married lady was battered by her sister-in-law, insulting her with all sorts of abusive words and even promised her that so far as she lives, she will make sure that the marriage comes to an end, the reason being that the lady had been married to her brother for quite a while yet she is not pregnant.

This incidence of daily assault now becomes a snare in the life of the couple. It has created a big wound which does not allow the lady to sleep nor eat well just as in the case of Hannah; the scripture has this to say:

‘And as he did so year by year, when she went up to The house of the Lord, so she provoked her therefore she wept, and did not eat.

Then said Elkanah her husband said to her Hannah why weepest thou and why eatest thou not? And why is thy heart grieved?

Am I not better to thee than ten sons? I Samuel 1:7-8.

The action of the other wife and children became the source of provocation and grief of heart to Hannah. It was Hannah alone who suffered it within herself. It was a problem of life which she went through. Tears became her daily food. She had no comfort from the husband despite the con-solations given her by him, saying ….. “am I not better to thee than ten sons”.

Honestly, all these words could not solve the problem of Hannah’s heart. With this kind of challenges occurring in a marriage, a woman will feel insecure in such a home irrespective of whatever she eats or wears. All her mind will be that, one day she would be thrown out of the marriage or the husband would dump her to marry another wo-man. Sometimes her mate will castigate her and make her a laughing object in the public. Look at another fact of the public assault that brought anguish to the soul of the sufferer as recorded in Genesis 16:4-5.

“…and when she saw that she had conceived, her mist-ress was despised in her eyes.

And Saria said unto Abram, my wrong be upon thee: I have given my maid unto thy bosom, and when she saw that she had conceived, I was despised in her eyes: the Lord judge between me and thee”.s

Let’s put the life of Sarai and Hannah in a spiritually x-ray, we will clearly see that it tantamount to having a wound in the bone and ma-rrow of a grieved heart.

This is one of the things that cause some weak and feeble minded souls to commit suicide. It is a challenge we must be aware of in order to know how it can be handled by whosoever is concerned. Sarah felt insulted by her maid and as such she looked rejected and forsaken.

She suffered the pain inwardly; some husbands too do feel intra-personal tension when their wives face delay in child bearing. Some men would say their maids are better than their wives, and why did they marry a male presuming she was a fema-le, referring to their wives as males. When would they have playmates in the house?

When would they buy pre-sents home for their child-ren? As a result of many self-pitied questions like these, some married men would want to try their luck outside their wedlock. Some men would see their wives being responsible for their ina-bility to be fruitful, some would call their wives names such as “unfortunate woman”, “witch” “Ogban-je”, etc.

I know a man who bought his wife a car, built a house for her but was transferred from his office to another state where he had an opp-ortunity to marry another woman whom he thought would bear him children. I doubt if such marriage would not end up with each person preparing charms against each other. It may even result to death too.

This is a big challenge in the marital life of the said couple which they need to solve in a round table talk. The anxiety to father children quickly can cause intra-personal tension which if not checked, may result in divorce.

Welcome to 2018: A year of a new dawn

By Rev Father John Damian Adizie, OCD

FINALLY, you have made it! I welcome you to 2018. Welcome to the year of favour. Welcome to the year of divine breakthrough and prosperity. Welcome to the year of abundant blessings.

I welcome you to the year of divine empowerment, a year when God will use people to empower his chosen people. And above all, you are most welcomed to the year of a new beginning, a year of divine transformation, restoration and jubilation. Your past is over!

Now that you have finally made it into 2018 the Lord God declares through the prophet Isaiah, “Do not remember the former things, or consider the things of old. I am about to do a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it?” (Isaiah 43:18-19).

The first thing you must do in this new year is to get rid of every ugly feelings, situations and experiences. Forget them! No amount of worry can solve your problem. In fact, the more you worry, the more you are most likely to develop sickness. Surrender all your worries to God.

Instead, the Lord wants you to focus on the new things He is about to do in your life and in your family. In this New Year 2018, your family will never be the same! Your marital life will change for better. You will start recording success in your academics. The year 2018 will be a year of business breakthrough for you. There will be no more setback in your business! Whatever you lay your hands shall prosper.

In this New Year 2018, you will not be indebted to nobody. Through the prophet Isaiah, the Lord assures us, “See, I will create new heavens and a new earth. The former things will not be remembered, nor will they come to mind.” (Isaiah 65:17). All the false allegations and charges the devil and even your enemies are bringing against you will no longer be remembered. They are all cancelled in Jesus name – Amen!

2018 is indeed a year of divine transformation. It is a year when God will transform your life and the lives of those around you. As St Paul declares in his second letter to the Corinthians,  ”Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.” (2 Corinthians 5:17) Child of God, as long as you are in Christ Jesus and as long as this new year is concerned, you are a new creation. All the old and ugly things in your life have passed away! Your sin is over!

The year 2017 recorded a lot of bloodshed because people  were heartless. Only a heartless human being can use bomb to destroy his fellow human being without feeling remorse. It takes a heartless leader to withhold people’s salaries and pensions.

Even President Buhari could not understand why most governors could sleep comfortably while owing people’s salaries. There is no peace for the wicked! Only a heartless leader can comfortably embezzle public fund without minding the outcome of his or her evil action.

In this year 2018, the Lord will not just transform our lives, He will also transform our hearts. He will transform the heart of our leaders and the heart of our society at large. As He declares through the prophet Ezekiel, “I will give them an undivided heart and put a new spirit in them; I will remove from them their heart of stone and give them a heart of flesh” (Ezekiel 11:19). The heart of stone is a heartless heart whereas the heart of flesh is heart with feeling, a heart of empathy, a loving heart and a heart that cares.  May God give us such heart in Jesus name – Amen!

Finally, this year 2018 will be a year of celebration and jubilation for you. You will sing and dance for joy! As the psalmist declares, “He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear the Lord and put their trust in him.” (Psalm 40:3).

Child of God, heaven is about hear your joyful songs. People around you will soon celebrate with you.  With your dancing shoe on, be ready, because any moment from now you will dance for joy.  As you rejoice in the Lord and with your fellow human beings, it shall be well with you, in Jesus name – Amen!

As you enter this New Year with faith, hope and love, may the joy and peace of this New Year remain with you both now and forevermore – Amen! Once more, I wish you happy New Year!

Stop ‘Senseless Killings’ In Nigeria, GPN Urges FG

Green Party of Nigeria (GPN)

The Green Party of Nigeria (GPN) on Saturday called on the Federal Government to end the “senseless killings” across the country as soon as possible.

The Chairman of the Edo Chapter of the party, Mr Roy Oribhabor, said in an interview in Benin, Edo State that the call became necessary in view of the recent killings in Benue State alleged to have been perpetrated by Fulani herdsmen.

At least eight states in the country are experiencing attacks by herdsmen. These include Enugu, Benue, Ekiti, Adamawa, Imo, Zamfara, Kaduna, and Delta.

Oribhabor, who described the Benue massacre as unfortunate, said it was the responsibility of the government to as matter of urgency and concern, stop the wanton destruction of lives and property of Nigerians by their fellow countrymen.

The chairman of the party said the killings were gruesome, unacceptable, callous, inhuman and wicked, and should be wholly and openly condemned and not be politicised.

He called on the country’s security agencies to unravel those behind the incessant killings.

He expressed the party’s empathy for the families of those who lost their loved ones in the killing episodes, as well as the governments of Benue, Rivers and Kwara.

He called for the declaration of a state of emergency in the states with high rate of the wanton killings and for the security agencies to get to the root of the agenda behind the killings.

Guys Smarts: Here's how to build a cool wardrobe that's made to last

Huckberry wardrobe

Stocking your house with quality barware, decorative items, bedding, and accessories can be a grind if you’re looking for something masculine without being desperately frontiersman or fratty.

A great retailer is like a record label at its peak. I’m not a big real-world shopper, but there are a handful of stores where I’d happily swing my wallet around blindfolded, taking home whatever falls off the rack.

Huchberry offers that kind of curation in a tidy online experience that features house brands alongside the best in rugged, but stylish third-party clothing and home goods. I’ve been covering gear and product since 2004, and when I first came across the printed catalog it seemed like a collection of items I’d been tracking, or had already purchased for myself; the site expands on those options with limited edition flash sales and expanded inventory. Which meant it was time to take a deeper look at what they offer.

THE AESTHETIC

Where I come from, a three-piece suit consists of your Carhartt one-piece, some Red Wing boots, and the right pair of Levis. I grew up working in a farm store selling power tools, and so even now when I need to dress up for an occasion, I expect a level of durability and accessibility no matter how classy the bourbon they’re pouring at the open bar. The palette is waxed canvas, merino wool, Horween leather, the hallmarks of heritage brand clothing.

LOOK FOR THE BIG NAMES…

Huckberry’s range is diverse, and occasionally fleeting—they might work with Billy Reid on an item or two, and when it’s gone, well, you’ve missed your chance. But dozens of larger brands join the fray, from Danner to Patagonia to Nau to Bang and Olufsen to Yeti to Topo Designs to Snow Peak. I’m a huge fan of the Danner Mountain Light, and checking prices recently showed their cost to keep up. The prices are always competitive with other retail sites, and the options are well-chosen. My favorite outside brand, by lightyears, is Taylor Stitch. Every guy needs a checkerboard shirt like this one.

BUILD YOUR BASE WITH HOUSE BRANDS

The dependable staples in the Huckberry line are its house brands, Flint and Tinder and Proof. Flint and Tinder stands out, with solid basics like a Supima cotton T-shirt and a cotton henley that I recommend. The Waxed Trucker Jacket is also a standout—it recalls Rick in the Walking Dead, the kind of thing that molds to your body the more you wear it—that looks better the older and more worn in it gets.

AND DON’T SLEEP ON THE CULT BRANDS

Ever heard of Give’R Gloves? I hadn’t, at least until I had the chance to hit the slopes of Jackson Hole with a pair. They’re modeled after the work gloves that Jackson locals would hit the hills with back in the day, and they’re banking on the natural preservative properties and waterproofing of leather and beeswax to confer durability and comfort on the slopes. Long story short, they kick ass—and they’re available on Huckberry along with a handful of killer cult brands.

CONSIDER YOUR FIT FACTOR

Online shopping’s Achilles Heel will always be fit, at least until we’re all 3-D laser-scanning our bodies for custom-printed clothing. I’m a medium in the T-shirt and a large in the Flint and Tinder henley, for example. It’s easy enough to return the gear for something new, but make sure you have accurate measurements and consult the sizing charts for each individual brand. I find boots to be a bigger issue than shirts and jackets, though the fact that I’m a “marge” (medium-large) always frustrates me.

BROWSE THE HOME GOODS SECTION

Stocking your house with quality barware, decorative items, bedding, and accessories can be a grind if you’re looking for something masculine without being desperately frontiersman or fratty. There are only so many reclaimed barnwood booze hutches and Ohio State-themed throw pillows one home can handle, after all. I love the options at Huckberry, from the simple, elegant pour-over set-ups to the Mountain Peaks rocks glasses (you REALLY start pondering each ascent as the brown stuff drains toward the base). The site is absolutely jammed with Woolrich throws, which makes any lackluster couch into an all-star piece. And the towels and robes offer that plush spa feel without feeling like you’ve just been forced through a couples massage with Reiki healing and a cucumber mask.

HOW DOES IT COMPARE?

Huckberry stacks up nicely against the brick and mortar incumbents. Steven Alan’s men’s store is always stocked with strong options, as is Todd Snyder’s Madison Square location. And then there are the legion “outfitter” wannabes that offer up waxed canvas, Vibram-heeled dreams to urban guys who don’t know which side of an axe to point at a log. Thing is, I love everything about those stores, even if 99 percent of the guys shopping there will never take a grease pencil to a waterproof topography map of the White Mountain range. That spirit has taken root, and finding a retailer that channels the field-to-city ethos is worthwhile. Huckberry’s one of the best, and if you’re an online shopper and that kind of clothing is in your wheelhouse you ought to give them a try.

The Personal Assistant on Social Media to President Muhammadu Buhari, Lauretta Onochie has asked that ‘should we now say Goodluck Jonathan was behind the incessant attacks which predated Buhari’s government? Since according to her he is a Life Patron of Miyetti Allah.

Lauretta Onochie on her Twitter handle Saturday presented a certificate indicating that former President Goodluck Jonathan is Life Patron of Miyetti Allah.

She said: “True, Miyetti Allah denied crimes, but Lo and behold who is its real Life Patron? It’s Reno Omokri’s erstwhile boss, Goodluck Jonathan. So should we now say Jonathan was behind the incessant & condemnable attacks which predated Pres. @MBuhari’s Administration?”- @AliyuAbdullahA

PSG Coach Fingers Referee For Monumental Collapse To Barcelona In Last Season’s Champions League

German referee Deniz Aytekin was partially responsible for Paris Saint Germain’s monumental 6-1 defeat at Barcelona in last season’s Champions League round-of-16 tie, manager Unai Emery has claimed as the Parisians prepare to meet another Spanish side Real Madrid at the same stage next month.

PSG took a 4-0 lead to Camp Nou for the second leg of the round-of-16 tie but were hammered 6-1 in Catalonia, with Sergi Roberto delivering the decisive blow in stoppage time – one of three Barca goals in the final seven minutes.

The hosts scored two penalties on their way to snatching the memorable 6-5 aggregate win and Emery has criticised the performance of Aytekin in the Champions League classic.

“You have to divide that tie into two parts,” he told Marca. “In the first game we won comfortably against a winning side like Barcelona, and then at the Camp Nou we were not able to respond against the same side.

“There is a third element also which was out of our hands and that was the referee. I am saying that referees, against the biggest club, have more respect. Look, not consciously, but involuntarily.”

PSG face Real Madrid in this season’s last 16 but Emery believes PSG have grown as a club to command more respect around the continent and among officials.

“A year on and that situation has changed for us, and we now have a better capacity to respond against winning teams like Barcelona or Madrid,” he commented.

“There is more respect for us in Europe and the world. Also among the referees there is more respect for us so as to ensure they are the most accurate as possible. We are better prepared than we were against Barcelona last year.”

Reflecting further on last year’s Barca clash, Emery added: “I like to listen to top coaches about how they saw that game. There were a lot of things that went on in it and for me it was something to learn from.

“The responsibility in the end – and I think that the president was clear about it – was shared amongst us all.”

Nasir El-Rufai: Moroá community wants Kaduna govt to address insecurity

Moroá community wants Kaduna govt to address insecurity

Gaggah gave the advice on Saturday while speaking at the Moro’a Annual Cultural celebration held at Manchok, Kaura Local Government Area of the state.

Mr Daniel Gaggah, the National President, Moro’a Development Association (MDA) has advised the Kaduna State Government to come up with a holistic strategy for addressing the security challenges in the area.

Gaggah gave the advice on Saturday while speaking at the Moro’a Annual Cultural celebration held at Manchok, Kaura Local Government Area of the state.

He said the call became necessary owing to the need for the people of the area to return to their farms.

According to him, the security challenges in the area are having a negative impact on the way of life of the people.

“The people of Takad, Kagoro and Atyap chiefdoms are still battling with security challenges which if not checked would find their way back into our land.”

On education, he said although the disengagement of teachers in the state was with a view to reshaping the sector, a sizable number of teachers from the community were affected with many of them “still struggling to come to terms with”.

He, therefore, urged the state government to review its recruitment arrangements so that it would be able to re-absorb a significant number of disengaged indigenes of the community.

On agriculture, he urged the government to support the community to enable it to improve on the already high yielding crop varieties they were producing.

He identified such high-yielding crops as rice, ginger, groundnuts, Irish potatoes, soya beans, and Yam, among others.

“Our people are willing to key into government program that are aimed towards providing assistance to farmers in order to boost agricultural production in the state,’’ he said.

Liverpool, Barcelona Agree £142m Coutinho Deal

Liverpool have agreed a €160 million (£142m) deal to sell Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona,  various outlets in Britain reported on Saturday.

If the deal goes through as expected, it will be the biggest-ever transfer involving a British club.

The Telegraph, Daily Mail and other outlets claim an announcement is expected to be made within hours.

Coutinho, who earlier withdrew from the Liverpool squad’s trip to Dubai for warm weather training, is expected to fly out to Barcelona later on Saturday evening to finalise terms, with the move including a big immediate down-payment and add-ons.

The deal comes after a long-running transfer saga, with the Brazil star not being able to move to Barcelona last summer following the world-record €222m sale of Neymar to Paris Saint-Germain.

Neither Barcelona nor Liverpool have confirmed the deal.

Nigeria: Once a Nation Under Jonathan, Now an Abattoir Under Buhari – Reno

In July 2012, clashes between natives and herdsmen reached a head in Plateau state leading to tens of deaths on both sides. Then President Jonathan, when briefed about the situation insisted that there wouldn’t be such impunity under his leadership and immediately ordered the army to go to the affected communities and fish out the perpetrators and bring them to book.

The military immediately obeyed the then President’s orders and sent troops to Barkin Ladi Local Government Area. They ordered all residents to leave their residence for temporary accommodation provided for them so they could conduct a joint air and ground operation to flush out the armed herdsmen who had been suspected of killing innocent Nigerians. The residents complied and the soldiers went in and not only did they clear the area, they made arrests which led to trials.

That is how a Commander-in-Chief acts. When your people are being slaughtered you don’t send them commiserations, like the frequent commiserations President Buhari has been sending to the people of Benue State. No. You assert yourself as the leader by using the nation’s symbols of strength to quash any threat to the national security of the nation.

That is what Jonathan did in Plateau state in July 2012. So effectively was Jonathan’s orders carried out that Malam Nasir El-Rufai tweeted his now infamous tweet on the 15th of July 2012 threatening that “We will write this for all to read. Anyone, soldier or not that kills the Fulani takes a loan repayable one day no matter how long it takes.” (his exact words).

So when he was elected governor and we began to hear him say that he had paid public monies to herdsmen to prevent further killings (there was actually a spike in killings) and that he as a governor was of the same ethnicity as these herdsmen, I was not at all taken aback as others were. The man had publicly signified his intentions long before he became governor.

But the point I am trying to make is that former President Jonathan, who was called weak by the All Progressive Congress, did something to end the menace of herdsmen killings, but President Buhari who is called ‘strong’ by his supporters, has refused to do anything.

And so today, when I read about the killings perpetuated by herdsmen in Benue, Plateau, Kaduna, Adamawa, Taraba and other parts of Nigeria, I really feel for our citizens who have to go through these ordeals of impunity. No arrests are made, no forms of deterrence whatsoever is carried about by the Buhari administration.

I heard that the Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, wept when he saw corpses of his citizens massacred by herdsmen. It might sound harsh, but can Ortom recall that only last month he smiled as he told Nigerians that President Buhari deserves a second term?

My question to Ortom is this: If President Buhari gets a second term, would there be human beings left alive in Benue?

It is a fact that herdsmen belong to the same wider ethnic nationality as President Muhammadu Buhari, although most killer herdsmen are not mainstream Fulani, but rather fringe Fulani of the Wodaabe (also known as the Mbororo or Bororo) subgroup of the Fula people.

It is also a fact that President Muhammadu Buhari was the grand patron of the umbrella union of herdsmen in Nigeria known as Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria.

From that vantage point, he had in the past angrily and malevolently confronted state governors in states were herdsmen had received the wrong end of the stick in their acts of marauding.

As a matter of fact, on October 13, 2000, Muhammadu Buhari, in his capacity as the Grand Patron of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, demanded for and got a meeting with the then Governor of Oyo state, Lam Adesina, were he angrily said the words below to Governor Adesina:

“Your Excellency, our visit here is to discuss with you and your government our displeasure about the incident of clashes between two peoples… the Fulani cattle rearers  and merchants are today being harassed , attacked and killed in Saki. That some arrests were made by Oyo State Police Command in the massacre with their immediate release without court trial.

This  was said to have been  ordered by Oyo State authorities and they were so released to their amazement.  The release of the arrested suspects gave the clear impression that the authorities are  backing and protecting  them to continue the unjust and illegal killings of Fulani cattle rearers…”

Muhammadu Buhari then ended his speech by demanding for an “immediate stoppage of the killings, justice and compensation  to the Fulanis.”

After listening to Muhammadu Buhari, Lam Adesina asked the then Commissioner of Police for Oyo state to respond to his angry visitor and the Commissioner responded thus:

“The killing of the natives by the Fulanis was duly reported to the police and, of course, we can’t make arrest because, as soon as they kill, they migrate to other areas. Who are you going to arrest? That is the problem”.  On  the killing of Fulanis,  which he said was as result of “piled up anger”,  the commissioner disclosed that  arrests had been made and the suspects  were in police custody.”

When the Commissioner was done, Governor Adesina responded to Buhari thus:

“I want to say also that we really have to appeal to our people, the itinerant Bororo people, that they should observe less aggression. It is not good , it is not right just coming from somewhere then you just pass through farm lands cultivated may be with the person’s life savings and then over night everything is gone. That is not right, even Allah does not approve of that. We even wonder when they talk about this people carrying dangerous weapons, I say do they really believe in Allah? When you just take life like that and go away!

“Are we not forbidden not to take human life? So I think General Buhari, General Marwa, you have to be educating them. It is my pleasure to inform  you  that at the Presidential Lodge, we have made some arrangements for refreshments so that before you go we can refresh together”.

That meeting of October 13, 2000, was recorded and the quotes above are from Agbaakin Kehinde Olaosebikan, then Chief Press Secretary to late Governor Lam Adesina of Oyo state.

Now imagine the level of concern and care that President Muhammadu Buhari showed for his kinsmen in in October 2000, that he went to challenge a sitting Governor to a pissing contest when herdsmen were killed in reprisal killings. Why hasn’t Muhammadu Buhari shown that level of concern for Nigerians killed by herdsmen?

Now that same man is our President and Commander-in-Chief, and herdsmen killings have exploded exponentially under his watch to the extent that the United States Congress declared Nigeria as the most dangerous place to be a Christian in the entire world bar none, principally because of the killings by herdsmen.

Can it be a coincidence that herdsmen killings has multiplied just as soon as their immediate past Grand Patron became President?

Where is the anger that Buhari displayed to Governor Lam Adesina now that Fulanis are killing Nigerians?

How many people were killed in the Southeast before President Buhari ordered Operation Python Dance? Now ask yourself how many thousands have died at the hands of herdsmen in Benue, Kaduna, Plateau, Taraba and Adamawa? The answer proves we are not all equal in Buhari’s Nigeria.

That is why I laughed when Governor Ortom said “I have reiterated my call on the Federal Government to arrest the leadership of Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore”. Why is Governor Ortom talking like a child? Can a Mafia godfather order the arrest of a mafioso to please a non mafia member? You are asking their Grand Patron to arrest the people who made him Grand Patron!

Apparently, Governor Ortom does not know his friends from his enemies.

FA Cup: Aina Scores As Hull Win, Man City Outclass Burnley

By James Agberebi:
Super Eagles defender Ola Aina was the hero for Hull City as he scored the only goal in their 1-0 away win against League One side Blackburn Rovers in the third round of the Emirates FA Cup on Saturday.

The win saw Hull halt a run of five straight games without a win.

Aina scored in the 58th minute to send Hull into the fourth round of this season’s FA Cup.

It is his first ever goal for Hull since joining them on loan from Chelsea last summer.

At the Etihad, Manchester City came from 1-0 down to thrash Burnley City 4-1 to advance into the next round of the FA Cup.

Burnley took a shock 1-0 lead through Ashley Barnes on 25 minutes off a mistake from John Stones.

But second half goals from Sergio Aguero (56th, 58th minutes), Leroy Sane (71st) and substitute Bernardo Silva (82nd minute) secured the comfortable win for the Premier League leaders.

League Two side Stevenage were forced to a 0-0 draw by Championship club Reading without Nigerian forward Sone Aluko who was benched.

Both teams will meet in a replay to decide who will go through to the fourth round.

Burton Albion were knocked out of this season’s FA Cup following their 1-0 away loss to fellow Championship club Birmingham City.

Nigerian midfielder Hope Akpan was introduced with four minutes left but could not prevent his side from going out.

At Vicarage Road, Watford, without Nigerian forward Isaac Success, made easy work of Bristol City, winning 3-0.

And in another game, Sammy Ameobi was on from the start for Bolton Wanderers who lost 2-1 at home to Premier League club Huddersfield Town.

Ameobi was replaced in the 76th minute of the game.

In Zamfara: DPR to sanction 4 filling stations

DPR to sanction 4 filling stations in Zamfara state

The DPR Operations Controller in Zamfara state, Mallam Ango Haruna, made this disclosure in an interview with newsmen on Saturday in Gusau.

The Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) in Zamfara, on Saturday said it had received a directive from the Senate Committee on Petroleum Downstream to sanction four filling stations, should they continue to hoard petrol.

The DPR Operations Controller in the state, Mallam Ango Haruna, made this disclosure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday in Gusau.

NAN reports that the committee led by its chairman, Sen. Kabiru Marafa of Zamfara Central, had visited the state last week to monitor fuel scarcity situation in the state.

The committee during the visit, observed that some of the filling stations were selling petrol above government approved price, while some were hoarding and diverting the product.

Haruna said that the committee had directed the DPR to sanction the four filling stations found selling the product above government approved price as well as hoarding it.

“Yes, we have the records of the affected filling stations, we will sanction them as directed by the committee at the appropriate time.

“You know, we were given directive from the Minister of Petroleum Resources that we should not seal off any filling station at this critical time, and in fact, even the committee chairman reminded me of this directive during the visit.

“What we do when we find any filling station selling above government price or hoarding is to force them to revert and make sure that they sell fuel to the public at N145, as approved by the government,” he said.

He described the visit of the committee as a patriotic step to alleviate the sufferings of the masses.

Moroá community wants Kaduna govt to address insecurity

Epiphany Mass: A good Christian should “not sit around” waiting for things to happen… – Pope Francis

Politics: It may finally be time for Trump's 'good shutdown'

donald trump

President Donald Trump once called for a "good" government shutdown, with fights over DACA and CHIP lingering that time may be coming.

  • Congress must pass a bill to fund the government by January 19, or the federal government will enter a partial shutdown.
  • President Donald Trump has previously advocated for a "good" shutdown.
  • Between policy fights and political willingness, that shutdown might actually come.

In May, President Donald Trump tweeted that it may be time for a "good" shutdown of the federal government.

He may finally get his wish.

If Congress does not pass a bill to fund the government by January 19, the federal government will enter a partial shutdown.

Lawmakers from both parties avoided the fate a slew of times in 2017 with a series of short-term extensions. Now, a confluence of political and policy-based factors could make avoiding a shutdown a significant hurdle.

Why it didn't happen before

Congress faced down a potential shutdown multiple times in 2017.

Two deadlines in late April resulted in a punt to September, as Republicans attempted to avoid complicating their healthcare push.

The September deadline resulted in a punt to December because the bill was tied to a critical increase in the debt ceiling. The December deadlines were pushed back because of a combination of disagreements over key policy issues — and the holiday break. As the conservative House Freedom Caucus feared, lawmakers don't like sticking around Capitol Hill on Christmas.

Why this time is different

Congress has been fine with punting on a long-term funding solution before — but now there is urgency to complete a longer-term deal. That means, however, that the chances of a shutdown are higher.

Greg Valliere, chief strategist at Horizon Investments, said the odds of a short-term punt don't seem as great this time.

"Perhaps there will be another extension, but the 'kick the can down the road' strategy, which was so popular last fall, has fewer supporters now," Valliere said in a note to clients. "We got a couple of emails yesterday from readers who think Congress is crying wolf once again on a government shutdown, but we think this time may be different."

The January deadline seems opportune because no outside legislative issues that lawmakers want to attach to the funding bill — the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals immigration program, Children's Health Insurance Program, and others — have a hard and fast deadline.

This could make ideological conservatives more likely to oppose any short-term bill — and Democrats more likely to push for their legislative priorities to be added.

Those same issues, however, are ideological sticking points for different factions of each party, and agreements won't be easy to reach.

Chris Kreuger, an analyst at Cowen Washington Research Group, said in a note to clients Thursday that Trump may not consider a government shutdown a bad outcome for a few reasons. For one, Kreuger said, it would play to Trump's "Drain the Swamp" narrative.

For another, Kreuger added, Trump may view the shutdown as a power play.

"Analogous to President Reagan firing the air-traffic controllers, this will make Trump look like a strong leader standing up for the core deliverables his base wants, i.e. The Wall," the strategist said.

Additionally, Kruger wrote, a shutdown could play into the hands of both parties.

"The central irony in this standoff is that both Trump and Congressional Democrats believe they command the high ground," he said. "Trump believes a shutdown over funding The Wall is good politics for him and the Congressional Democrats believe shutting down the government over DACA/Dreamer funding is good politics for them — they both may be right."

Why this time isn't different

A few factors in this round of negotiations, however, point to Congress either avoiding a shutdown with a large package or simply punting again.

Congressional leaders have been working on the same core set of issues as part of a funding package since September. Democrats are still insistent on codifying the DACA program, but the deadline to do so won't come until March. They've already punted on items like CHIP before with short-term extensions in funding.

A shutdown would be a serious black eye for Republican leaders. It would also be the first time since 1979 that a party has allowed the government to shut down while controlling Congress and the White House.

And if employees are furloughed or sent on leave, it would be the first time that has ever happened under one-party control.

Maintaining the status quo is fairly simple in Washington, and punting on the deadline again could be the simplest solution — for now.

"Even if these issues are resolved quickly, which looks unlikely, still another enormous budget issue looms in March," Valliere said. "Raising the debt ceiling, which cannot be accomplished without help from Democrats."

Strategy: Amazon invented a neighborhood to serve its Seattle headquarters, but the restaurants it lured there are failing

So far, Amazon hasn't created the thriving "18-hour" neighborhood it promised.

Restaurants moved to Amazon's buildings in Seattle to make big bucks, but they are finding it harder than expected to turn a profit.

When Amazon chose downtown Seattle for its massive urban campus, John Schoettler, Amazon's vice president of global real estate, wanted to create a thriving "18-hour" neighborhood.

To some extent, Amazon has succeeded. In a decade, nonstop development has transformed Seattle's South Lake Union and Denny Triangle from a sea of parking lots, car rental agencies, motels, and warehouses to gleaming office towers and luxury real estate.

Restaurants, gyms, cafès, and even medical clinics have moved in, drawn by Amazon's ever-expanding workforce and the promise of high-salaried residents due to move into the thousands of newly-built luxury apartments.

But for many of the neighborhood's new businesses, things haven't turned out exactly like they hoped. For one, they can't get customers in during non-work hours, at dinnertime and on weekends.

"The worst thing is having an empty restaurant and then trying to keep your staff motivated and energized," local restaurateur and chef Josh Henderson told Marketplace.

On a recent visit to Seattle, we checked out the so-called "18-hour" neighborhood.

Over the last decade, Amazon has transformed South Lake Union and its surrounding areas, Belltown and Denny Triangle. Each of those pins on the map is an Amazon office.

Amazon has nearly 40,000 employees in Seattle, with plans to grow to 55,000 in the near future. Amazonians are everywhere downtown.

Amazon's offices are spread across more than 33 buildings and 13.6 million square feet of office space in the area. This is Day 1 Tower, one of four towers that will form the heart of Amazon's urban campus by the time its completed.

Sources: GeekWire, SF Gate, CNBC

With so much real estate, Amazon has become one of the biggest landlords in the area, dictating what businesses rent its spaces. For its part, Amazon has rented out to local businesses and avoided chains.

John Schoettler, Amazon's vice president of global real estate, has said the company wants to turn South Lake Union and Denny Triangle into an "18-hour district" for Seattleites. This dog park, next to Day 1 tower, is open to the public.

Source: The Seattle Times

Businesses flocked downtown to capitalize on the Amazon workforce and the crop of luxury renters, but business has yet to show up as promised.

As of August, the company rents out space to 32 businesses, with 24 of those being restaurants and cafès. Most of the restaurants are run by locals. Assembly Hall and Tanakasan are run by famed local chef Tom Douglas.

Source: Tom Douglas

Amazon's workforce has created a booming lunch crowd. A fleet of food trucks descend everyday. When I walked around at lunchtime, it seemed like everyone on the street carried a blue badge and a takeout box.

Demand in the area is for "quick food, under fifteen bucks," restaurateur Josh Henderson told Marketplace. That means big business for lunch and happy hour Monday to Friday, but little else. Fast-casual places like Mamnoon Street have done well.

Sources: The Seattle Times, Marketplace

Last January, Henderson closed his tacos and drinks spot, Bar Noroeste, when Amazonians didn't bite. He reopened as Kiki Ramen months later.

Source: Eater Seattle

Henderson closed three restaurants in the area in August. He had hoped upscale eatery Vestal would become a destination. When that didn't happen, he focused on the Amazon crowd, but even that didn't work. "It's a pretty soul-sucking experience to have a restaurant that's empty on a Tuesday night," he said last April.

Source: The Seattle Times, Marketplace

Dinner and weekend business remains weak. Cactus began offering a "late night" happy hour last year to drum up business. Owner Marc Chatalas told The Seattle Times the move has not been effective. "Simply, the neighborhood has not developed," he said.

Some restaurant managers told The Seattle Times, they've even had trouble hiring talented chefs and experienced waitstaff, because tips are low and they'd rather focus on dinner establishments than those catering to the lunch crowd.

Award-winning chef Chris Keff sold Flying Fish when she found the restaurant wasn't making profit. "And that's the thing about when you build a whole new neighborhood, with Class A office buildings is that the space is quite expensive to rent, so you depend on having business at most times of the day," Keff said.

Source: The Seattle Times, Marketplace

Amazon has tried to help, keeping its campus cafeteria small to encourage employees to venture into nearby restaurants. And the area's landlords, including Amazon and Paul Allen-owned Vulcan, have given many tenants "improvement allowances" to cover some renovations for new restaurants.

Source: The Seattle Times

Douglas, who also owns Brave Horse Tavern, told The Seattle Times that the burden is on restaurateurs to adapt to the neighborhood by adding happy hours, outdoor seating, and other things that appeal to the daytime crowd.

Source: The Seattle Times

But Amazon's lease agreements require restaurants to stay open late into the night. Some restaurants have tried to close early because they found they couldn't generate enough business at night to justify the cost of staying open.

Marination co-owner Roz Edison asked Amazon to allow the restaurant to close on Sundays because business drops 50-60% on weekends. Amazon denied the request.

Source: The Seattle Times

Some former restaurant employees told The Seattle Times that Amazon security guards micromanage shops and track when they close. One restaurant owner likened Amazon to "Big Brother," a claim Amazon has pushed back on.

Source: The Seattle Times

The neighborhood is a microcosm of Silicon Valley trends. Bulletproof Coffee, the masterminds behind the idea of putting a slab of butter in your morning coffee, opened an outpost last year. It's only a matter of time before raw water and keto restaurants appear.

Source: Eater Seattle

High-end furniture stores like West Elm and specialty Asian groceries have moved in as well, but they didn't seem busy when I visited. Only Whole Foods seemed to have a bustling crowd.

Downtown Seattle has added 20,000 apartments in the last decade, with another 27,000 on the way. In some respects, Amazon and the businesses that bought into the neighborhood are just waiting for more people to move in.

Source: Business Insider, The Seattle Times

Despite the turmoil, Schoettler told The Seattle Times in August that all restaurants operating on Amazon property have survived and that they are working with operators to "to make sure they're staying healthy."

Sports: The computer model that nailed the NFL's regular season has made its picks for the Wild Card games

Jared Goff

Two models predict who will win the games during Wild Card weekend

  • After a slow start to the season, Cortana stormed back and was on fire the final ten weeks.
  • Cortana correctly picked 68% of the games overall and 75% of the games over the final ten weeks.
  • Elo also had a strong showing during the regular season, correctly picking 64% of the games.

The NFL regular season is now over, and despite a slow start, Microsoft's Cortana stormed back and won the head-to-head showdown with Elo.

We took a look at two popular systems used to pick NFL games: Cortana, Microsoft's digital assistant, and Elo, the modeling system used by Nate Silver's FiveThirtyEight. In both cases, the computers are picking outright winners and not against the spread. However, each gives a likelihood of a team's winning, which, in theory, could help measure the strength of certain lines.

Cortana won the regular season matchup, going 162-78 (68%) overall, and 111-38 (75%) over the last ten weeks (we did not track Week 17 because of the wonky nature of the final week). Elo was not far behind, going 154-86 (64%) overall.

Here are the picks for Wild Card weekend, with each model's percent chance of winning in parentheses. Point spreads are just for reference, via Vegas Insider as of Thursday morning.

Saturday

  • Tennessee Titans at Kansas City Chiefs (-8.5) — CHIEFS (Elo 75%, Cortana 64%)
  • Atlanta Falcons at Los Angeles Rams (-5.5) — FALCONS (Elo 51%), RAMS (Cortana 58%)

Sunday

  • Buffalo Bills at Jacksonville Jaguars (-8.5) — JAGUARS (Elo 59%, Cortana 69%)
  • Carolina Panthers at New Orleans Saints (-7) — SAINTS (Elo 65%, Cortana 61%)
