Maina: Malami blocks Senate investigation into reinstatement scandal

Malami blocks Senate investigation into Maina scandal

The AGF said the National Assembly lacks the competence to investigate such a case.

Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, has filed a lawsuit in the Federal High Court, Abuja, to stop the Senate from investigating the reinstatement scandal involving wanted ex-pensions reform boss, Abdulrasheed Maina.

According to a report by TheCable, the AGF filed the suit with Justice Binta Nyako, urging the judge to stop the upper legislative chamber from probing the case because it lacks "legislative competence".

The suit read, "The employment, attendance at work, disengagement, reinstatement and or promotion of a civil servant are matters outside the exclusive and concurrent legislative lists contained in the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended).

"That the national assembly cannot legitimately regulate the employment, attendance at work, disengagement, reinstatement and or promotion of a civil servant, which are matters exclusively within the purview of the Federal Civil Service Commission under the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria1999 (as amended).

"The national assembly lacks the legislative competence to investigate the employment, attendance at work, disengagement, reinstatement and or promotion of a civil servant which are matters exclusively within the purview of the Federal Civil Service Commission under the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria1999 (as amended).

"The power of investigation vested the national assembly by section 88 (1) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended) is limited and such that can only be exercised within the confines of Section 88 (2) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended).

"The plaintiff as the chief law officer and minister of justice of the federation is bound to ensure compliance by the Federal Government of Nigeria and or any of its cognate organs/agencies with the express or implied contents of extant Judgements and Orders of competent courts in Nigeria.

"The defendant cannot constitute itself into a quasi-appellate court, tribunal or panel with a view to reviewing any executive action taken in compliance with the adverse judgment in the said Suit No: FHC/ABJ/CS/65/2013."

Maina's controversial reinstatement

In October 2017, Maina was recalled and promoted to head the Ministry of Interior's human resource department despite pending corruption charges against him.

This was after he was dismissed by the Federal Civil Service Commission in 2013 following a recommendation by the Office of the Head of Service.

In 2015, Maina was charged alongside former Head of Service, Steve Oronsaye, Osarenkhoe Afe and Fredrick Hamilton Global Services Limited before a Federal High Court on a 24-count charge bordering on procurement fraud and obtaining by false pretence through the award of fraudulent biometric contracts.

After he was declared wanted over an alleged N2 billion pension fraud, he fled abroad to the United Arab Emirates (UAE), evading the capture of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

AGF Malami; Minister of Interior, Abdulrahman Dambazau; the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Interior, Abubakar Magaji; and Head of Service, Mrs Winifred Oyo-Ita, have all been implicated in the scandal.

Malami denies writing letter of reinstatement

While appearing before the House of Representatives ad-hoc committee probing the issue on November 30, 2017, the AGF continued to insist that the letter of reinstatement that kickstarted the whole Maina controversy never had his authorisation despite bearing the seal of his office.

He informed the Aliyu Madaki-led committee that an investigation was already underway to determine how the letter was initiated and sent out, and that results of the investigation will be forwarded to the committee.

Fuel Scarcity: Ex-CBN director urges FG to repair refineries

Fuel now sells at N250 per litre in Enugu

According to him, the government would also earn foreign exchange from the importation of  refined products if the refineries are working at optimal level.

Dr Titus Okunronmu, a former Director, Budgetary Department, Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), on Monday, advised the Federal Government to repair all the four refineries in the country.

Okunronmu told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ota, Ogun, that the revamping of the nation’s refineries would increase domestic supply and end current scarcity of petroleum products.

According to him, the government would also earn foreign exchange from the importation of  refined products if the refineries are working at optimal level.

“By earning foreign exchange from importation of its refined products, the Federal Government would be able to diversify the economy effectively and create jobs for unemployed youths,’’ he said.

He also urged the government to halt export of crude oil so as to reduce borrowing and pressure on the nation’s currency.

In Enugu: EEDC begins clearing of network for improved power supply

Residents of Ijegun-Imore community protest 4-month power outage

A statement on Monday in Enugu by the company’s Head of Communications, Mr Emeka Ezeh, said the clearance was to detect faults on its trunk lines

The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) says it has commenced the clearing of its network for improved electricity supply to its consumers in the southeast.

A statement on Monday in Enugu by the company’s Head of Communications, Mr Emeka Ezeh, said the clearance was to detect faults on its trunk lines.

Ezeh said that the company would also install additional 500 transformers before the end of January, adding that over 80 of the transformers had been deployed and commissioned.

“EEDC uses this opportunity to appreciate its esteemed customers for their support and understanding during 2017 and reassures them of its continued effort in ensuring a better customer experience in 2018,’’ he said.

Ezeh cautioned residents of the zone against indiscriminate bush burning during the dry season to avoid unsafe acts that could result to electrical accidents or fire outbreaks.

“There is need for them to stay safe and exercise care, especially as we have moved into extreme dry season,’’ he said.

El-Rufai pays surprise visit to Buhari's potential 2019 opponent, Bakare

The two shared a very public hug when the Kaduna governor met the clergy.

Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, was a surprise guest at the church auditorium of the Latter Rain Assembly headed by President Muhammadu Buhari's potential opponent in the 2019 presidential election, Pastor Tunde Bakare, on Sunday, January 7, 2018.

The popular televangelist had revealed to his congregation on January 1, that God wants him to run for president despite his plan to quit politics for good.

Despite his strong political association with President Buhari, Governor El-Rufai visited Bakare's auditorium in the Ogba area of Lagos and shared a public hug with the religious leader when he arrived.

The pastor told the Kaduna governor, "I have missed you. It is a good time to come."

Pastor Bakare was notably picked as the running mate of President Buhari when he contested on the platform of the defunct Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) during the 2011 presidential election which he lost to former president, Goodluck Jonathan.

Short Story: Domestic abuse & vengeance revert

Blood stained knife.

The moment where I killed my husband…

My mind flashed back to the days, the weeks and years that led to this one defining moment in my life.  The moment where I killed my husband…

It wasn’t me…

No…

It wasn’t me…

I couldn’t bear to look at myself in the mirror.

My blood stained tank top, the blood splattered all over my face and neck and the knife…I didn't realize the knife was still cradled between my fingers

Oh my God!!!

It was me…!!!

It was me in the mirror!!!

I killed him…

I was a killer

I AM a killer…

I slumped to the side of the black leather couch in the living room, I had always hated that couch but right then, it seemed like the couch was my only comfort.

My mind flashed back to the days, the weeks and years that led to this one defining moment in my life.

The moment where I killed my husband…

Mofe and I had been married for twelve years, seven months, one week and three days. I still remember how we met. How he walked up to me with that crooked grin and one-sided dimple. The mere thought of his dimple brought a nostalgic smile to my face.

Mofe was such a lovely person. He was the best boyfriend any girl could ask for. He was handsome, intelligent, funny and very caring. He could never hurt a fly.

I remember our wedding day, the single tear he shed when he raised my veil and kissed me for the first time as husband and wife, our first dance, our first night together. I had married the man of my dreams.

Or so I thought…

Three months into our marriage and the abuse started. I remember that Saturday evening oh so vividly. He wasn't drunk nor was he high. He had just come back from playing basketball with his friends on the Island .He got mad because I hadn't opened the door for him on time and gave me a hot slap…the first of many to come.

I remember falling to the ground and hitting my head on the side of the coffee table. I remember watching him walk away acting like he didn't notice the deep gash on my head. I don’t know what hurt more; the slap or the sudden realization that I was married to a monster.

One slap turned into two, two slaps turned into a pounding, pounding after pounding led from one miscarriage to another.

Seven miscarriages later and I still couldn't leave him. I couldn't bring myself to walk out on this marriage I had prayed so long for. I mean…he loved me…he promised me he did…he just couldn't help himself when he got so angry.

I just had to try not to get him mad and we’d be fine, everything would be okay. For some reason I kept making these stupid excuses for him, not just to myself but to my family and friends as well. Everyone told me I was stupid but I loved him. Love endures all after all doesn’t it?

This night however, it was different. He came home late from work and got mad because I made rice for him instead of amala. He came into the room and dragged me by my hair into the dining room. While I was trying to explain things to him, He shut me up with two slaps.  I wasn't sure if it was stars I saw or if it was the whole Milky Way. I tried to walk out on him but he pulled me back by my shoulder and started hitting me. When he was done he left me on the floor and went into the room.

On the floor, too weak to even move, I felt it again. A familiar trickle of cold fluid down my thighs and I knew it had happened again. I had lost another baby…my eighth miscarriage…my baby!

I couldn't cry, there were no more tears left in me…I just stood up in a robot like fashion, went into the kitchen, picked up a knife and went looking for Mofe. I found him lying down on the bed, looking so peaceful in his sleep. How could he be so peaceful when he had taken another baby away from me? He didn't deserve to sleep. He didn’t even deserve to live. So I did it. I pushed the knife into his chest and didn't stop until I heard him take his last breath.

Now I’m here, leaning on the couch in the living room, watching the blood drain out of my husband, wondering how I let everything get this far. I could have left him, I could have walked out of this marriage, walked out of this pain, it didn't have to get this far.

I couldn't help but wonder how many women had gone through this same mental, emotional, physical and psychological abuse. How many women had been stuck in prison-like marriages trying to find a way out?

Don’t be like me. Don’t stay and take the abuse. It doesn’t get any better…leave…please leave him…

Conte backs Barkley for England World Cup role

Chelsea boss Antonio Conte wants to help new signing Ross Barkley claim a place in England’s World Cup squad even though he has not played since May due to a hamstring injury.

Barkley signed for Chelsea from Everton on Friday for a cut-price fee in the region of £15 million ($20 million, 17 million euros) as his Toffees contract was due to expire this summer.

Conte does not know when the 24-year-old — who needed surgery — will return, but Chelsea’s Italian manager hopes the midfielder can make Gareth Southgate’s Russia 2018 squad.

“We have five months to show he deserves a call with the national team for the World Cup,” Conte said. “I hope (he gets one), because it means he will do very well with us.”

Barkley trained at Chelsea’s Cobham base this weekend and is due to meet with Conte for the first time on Monday.

The Blues boss is reluctant to put a timescale on when Barkley will be available before first assessing him.

“It’s important for me to see him, to understand his physical condition,” Conte added. “My hope is to have this player (available) very quickly.”

Conte spoke of Barkley’s versatility, but said it was important the Everton academy graduate understands his role tactically before he is selected.

“He can play in midfield, if we play with three midfielders, or number 10 if we play 3-4-3,” Conte added.

“Before playing we must be sure that he is into our idea of football. Otherwise it’s a problem for him and it’s a problem for the rest of the team.”

Benue Killings: Ortom blames Buhari for security failure, suspends 2019 campaign

Ortom blames Buhari for Benue killings, suspends 2019 campaign

The governor has insisted on his claim that the Federal Government failed to heed his warnings.

Benue State governor, Samuel Ortom, has blamed the negligence of the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration  for the spate of killings orchestrated by Fulani herdsmen that has led to the death of over 50 people in the state.

While speaking in an interview with Vanguard, the governor said the Federal Government ignored several warnings about the resistance of the herdsmen to the state's anti-open grazing law and refused to take decisive actions against public threats made by the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria.

The governor further revealed that in light of the killings, he has decided to suspend political activities including campaigns for his 2019 reelection bid.

He explained that he can't campaign in good conscience while the people of his state are being killed without much consequence.

He said, "Let me be frank. The Federal Government has not done enough. When this incidence started with the threat from the president and secretary of Miyetti Allah, Kauta Hore, who addressed a press conference and issued threats that they will do everything possible to frustrate the Benue State Government from implementing the anti-open grazing law, we quickly drew the attention of the Inspector General of Police, the Director General of the Department of State Services, DSS, and even the office of the National Security Adviser.

"The leadership of Miyetti Allah called the law names; that it was draconian and had no place in the 21st century. We saw that as a threat to our existence and in June 2016, we reported to the  then acting president (Prof. Yemi Osinbajo) and to our surprise, these people were not apprehended.

"When they saw that no one was going to apprehend them, they went further to issue more threats. In October 2016, we reminded the IGP, the DSS and the NSA of the potential violence that we faced in Benue State as a result of the threat from the Miyetti Allah. We, specifically, demanded that the two officers of the Miyetti Allah, the secretary and the president, be arrested, but unfortunately, they were not arrested. I do not know why the Federal Government has abandoned us. If they had acted that time, we would not have gotten to where we are today.

"I have suspended everything about campaigns and all that, even for myself. Yes, I am contesting in 2019 but I don't want to be campaigning for now. I cannot campaign for myself or any other person until this matter is resolved. I cannot preside as governor over dead people.

"The lives of my people come first before politics. In fact, I have decided that I am not going to engage in any political activity, whether for myself or for anybody until this matter is resolved. I cannot be talking about 2019 when my people are being killed.

"If I win, will I preside over dead bodies? If that will make other people to take the governorship from me, so be it. I must not be governor."

The governor further issued a warning that the patience of Benue State residents with the killings is wearing thin and that people might be frustrated enough to start taking the law into their own hands due to the failure of security agencies.

He also explained that the state's anti-open grazing law is not discriminatory to any particular group and is implemented to ensure peaceful coexistence between everyone in the state.

He said, "You can see that it is getting beyond me. Even when there was protest against the recent killings in Makurdi, and I went there, there was massive resistance. It became violent and it is even God that saved us. I would have been attacked.

"When I came into office, there was proliferation of arms and ammunition in the state. I declared an amnesty programme that saw massive retrieval of arms from our youths.

"I pleaded with them that the way to develop is not by taking the laws into their hands but by obeying the laws. I have resisted the temptation to say that our people should protect themselves because I trusted the president.

"I believed that he has the capacity to protect us. But from what is happening, I am sure some people around him are frustrating our communication with him and the actions to be taken.

"Otherwise, the president I know will not allow this kind of thing to be happening. We have not committed any offence.

"We have no regret passing the anti-open grazing law. The law came as a necessity because of the killings in Benue State by the herdsmen.

"We sought peaceful ways of resolving the matter but we could not. We tried everything under the sun to ensure that we stopped these killings but it was not possible so we prayed and God gave us wisdom to enact that law, which gives protection to the farmers and the herdsmen.

"We have not sent cattle rearers away from Benue, we are simply saying there are modern ways of rearing cattle, which is to ranch them.

"With that, farmers can go their legitimate ways of doing their business and those who are rearing cattle can also continue. I am surprised at the resistance of the herders."

Benue attacks

In attacks allegedly carried out by Fulani herdsmen in Guma Local Government Area and Logo LGA of Benue between Sunday, December 31, 2017, and Tuesday, January 2, 2018, 50 people were reportedly killed.

11 other people were killed in a fresh attack on Tombu village of Logo LGA, again by suspected Fulani herdsmen, on Saturday, December 6, 2018.

Police charge 6 to court

The Benue State Police Command arraigned six Fulani herdsmen who are suspected to be connected to the massacre of over a dozen people in Guma LGA on January 2.

The suspects were allegedly involved in the killing of 19 people in Akor village and were arraigned at a Chief Magistrate Court in Makurdi before Chief Magistrate Isaac Ajim on Friday, January 5.

Alongside the six already charged to court, the state's police command also arrested two suspects in Logo LGA on Wednesday.

President Buhari blamed for attacks

Many residents of Benue took to the streets of Makurdi on Wednesday, January 3, to protest against the savage attacks and called on President Buhari to act on the terror of the herdsmen or resign from his position.

State governor, Samuel Ortom, was reportedly stoned while trying to calm protesters at Wurukum in Makurdi after the angry protesters vowed to remain on the streets until decisive action is taken against the attackers.

They had barricaded major roads leading in and out of Makurdi as soldiers drafted to quell the protest and prevent mayhem found it difficult to control the crowd.

Earlier on Tuesday, January 2, Governor Ortom, who is from Guma LGA, had blamed the Federal Government for the attacks.

Ekiti State governor, Ayodele Fayose, also criticised President Buhari's silence over the numerous attacks carried out by herdsmen in the country over the past few years.

Later on Wednesday, January 3, the president released a statement condemning the attacks and assuring Governor Ortom that relevant security agencies have been directed to do everything possible to arrest those behind the regrettable incidents.

Pirlo: If Van Dijk Is Worth £75m, Then Coutinho Is Worth Twice As Much

Italian legend Andrea Pirlo reckons €160million is a fair price to pay for new Barcelona star Phillipe Coutinho particularly with former club Liverpool shelling half of that sum for defender Virgil Van Dijk.

The Brazilian playmaker was officially presented as a Barcelona player on Sunday after completing his record transfer to the Camp Nou.

Much has been made of the fee paid for Coutinho – who joined Liverpool in 2013 – but former Italy, AC Milan and Juventus midfield maestro Pirlo said the price is justified after the Reds spent in the region of €80m – £75m – to prise the Dutchman from Southampton this month.

“Other than the crazy prices, the price of Coutinho is in line with the prices of today,” Pirlo told Sky Sport Italia.

“If Van Dijk is worth €80m then he costs double. It’s only fair.”

Coutinho has agreed a five-and-a-half-year deal as he prepares to link up with star trio Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Ousmane Dembele in Barcelona.

The 25-year-old, who made 152 Premier League appearances and contributed 41 goals and 35 assists, did not play in Barca’s 3-0 victory over Levante on Sunday, as the club retained a nine-point lead in LaLiga.

You Will Not Be Abandoned, FG Assures 490 Nigerian Evacuees From Libya

Libyan, IOM, Libya returnees

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Geoffrey Onyeama, on Sunday in Port Harcourt said that the Federal Government would rehabilitate and empower 490 Nigerians evacuated from Libya.
Onyeama gave the assurance on the arrival of the returnees at Port Harcourt Airport in Rivers.
He said that President Muhammadu Buhari had made resources available to ensure that returnees were evacuated as quickly as possible and enable them fit back into the society.
“The president had made provisions for every logistics to make sure that we bring you back from Libya,” he said.
He said he was accompanied by officials from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the Director General, National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP).
Onyeama said officials who accompanied him included the Comptroller General of Nigeria Immigration Service and Senior Special Adviser to the President On Diaspora to ensure the evacuation of the returnees.
He said: “We negotiated with Libyan Government to make sure that you are here; we know that many of you were trafficked and passed through humiliation.
“We are proud of you, you maintained your dignity despite all odds, we hope that  one thing that you have learnt is that your life matters to Mr President and all Nigerians.
“You have come home; you will not be abandoned; there is a place and provision for you to be rehabilitated and be educated; we will also train you on skills to be empowered in your country.”
Also speaking, the Comptroller General of Nigeria Immigration Service, Mr Muhammad Babandede, said that Nigerians have the right to travel to any part of the world.
Babandede also stated that there were citizens of Nigeria who had good jobs and papers in Libya.
“There are Nigerians who have genuine papers in Libya. Not all Nigerians were in detention or in the camp.
“So many of them have good jobs, so let Nigerians not think that Nigerians are committing crimes in Libya,” he said.
According to Babandede, the Libyan Government renewed the passports of Nigerians doing good jobs in that country after negotiating with the Nigerian Government.
He also urged Nigerians to travel through legal means to any country of their choice.
Mr Kenneth Kobani, the Secretary to the River State Government, also commended President Buhari for his effort to ensure that the suffering of Nigerians in Libya would come to an end.
Kobani, who represented Gov. Nyesom Wike of Rivers, said that the State Government would collaborate with the Federal Government to rehabilitate and empower the returnees.

Investors Urge Apple To Address Youth Addiction To iPhones

Apple

Two large investors have urged the smartphone maker to take steps to address what they say is a growing problem of young people getting addicted to Apple’s iPhones.

Apple Inc shareholders Jana Partners and the California State Teachers’ Retirement System, one of the nation’s largest public pension plans, delivered a letter to Apple on Saturday asking the company to consider developing software that would allow parents to limit children’s phone use, the Wall Street Journal reported earlier on Sunday.

Jana, a leading activist shareholder, and CalSTRS, also asked Apple to study the impact of excessive phone use on mental health, according to the publication.

CalSTRS and Apple did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Jana and CalSTRS together control about $2 billion worth of Apple shares, the Journal reports.

The social rights issue is a new turn for Jana, which is known for pushing companies it invests in to make financial changes.

However, the issue of phone addiction among young people has become a growing concern in the United States as parents report their children cannot give up their phones.

CalSTRS and Jana worry that Apple’s reputation and stock could be hurt if it does not address those concerns, according to the Journal.

Half of teenagers in the U.S. feel like they are addicted to their mobile phones and report feeling pressure to immediately respond to phone messages, according to a 2016 survey of children and their parents by Common Sense Media.

The phone addiction issue got a high-profile boost from the former Disney child star Selena Gomez, 24, who said she canceled a 2016 world tour to go to therapy for depression and low self-esteem, feelings she linked to her addiction to social media and the mobile photo-sharing app Instagram.

The second-semester examination is scheduled to start today, Monday, January 8, 2018. However, the VC in a statement said, the ex student union president who served from May 8 to 29, 2017 before he was suspended has concluded plans with National Associaton of Nigerian Students, NANS to disturb the exams.

In the statement titled ''Attempt by NANS to disrupt the forthcoming Semester examinations beginning Monday, 8 January 2018'', Olayinka said he was surprised that anyone will still parade himself as an official of the Students Union having in mind that the union has since been suspended on May 30th, 2017.

The VC, however, declared that the union suspension remains valid and that any student of the university parading himself as its official does so at its own risk.

Oparaku: Heartland Back In NPFL To Stay

By Adeboye Amosu: Heartland team manager, Mobi Oparaku, says that the club is back to take its place among the elites in the Nigeria Professional Football League after securing promotion to the top flight, reports Completesportsnigeria.com.

The Naze Millionaires were relegated to the Bet9ja Nigeria National League in the 2015/2016 season after finishing in 18th position in the NPFL table.

It was the the first time the Owerri club who are one of the most successful clubs in the history of the NPFL with five titles will be relegated in its 40 years existence.

They are however back among the big boys after winning the NNL Southern Conferences last term.

“We are back for good. Everybody know the history of this club and where we belong. What happened the previous season was disappointing (going on relegation) but we thank God we are back in the NPFL,” The former Golden Eaglets and Super Eagles defender told Completesportsnigeria.com at the Agege Stadium Lagos ahead of his team’s NNL Super Four tie against Remo Stars.

“It was difficult for our fans too, but we proved our class by coming back immediately. The NPFL is a familiar terrain for us and I believe we have what it takes to do well in the new season.

” It will sound too ambitious to say we will win the title immediately but we do our best to prove to people that the Heartland of old is still alive.

“One thing I can confidently say is that we won’t be relegated again. We are surely back in the NPFL to stay.”

Heartland will host Sunshine Stars on the opening day of the 2017/2018 at the popular home ground, Dan Anyiam Stadium, Owerri on Sunday.

2018 Budget: Edo Partners World Bank On Expenditure Framework, Inclusive Growth

World Bank

The Edo State Government has revealed that it is partnering with the World Bank on its Medium-Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF) and Medium Term Sector Strategy (MTSS), for efficient allocation of resources and engender inclusive growth.

Mr. Joseph Eboigbe, Special Adviser to the governor on Budget, disclosed this in a chat with journalists in Benin City, noting that recommendation to go into the document was drawn from the Alaghodaro Investment Summit and factored in the designing of the state’s 2018 budget.

MTSS presents policy priorities or strategic objectives that define activities, which a budget is designed to achieve while the MTEF, an annual, rolling three-year expenditure plan, sets out the medium-term expenditure priorities and hard budget constraints against which sector plans can be developed and refined.

Eboigbe said that the imperative for the partnership was for the state to better manage its budgeting process, ensure transparency in the allocation of resources and drive development across different sectors of the state.

He added that some of the recommendations from the maiden Alaghodaro Investment Summit were considered, noting that the state government is working assiduously to ensure that reforms that will drive industrialisation are pursued.

The state government has long standing partnerships with international organisations, which are diversified in areas of funding, knowledge exchange, and recently resulted in the establishment of a United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR).

NNL Super 4: Obuh Unworried Over Kwara United Defeat To Go-Round, Set For NPFL Campaign

By Adeboye Amosu‎: Kwara United head coach, John Obuh, is not losing sleep over his team’s failure to make it to the final of Bet9ja Nigeria National League Super Four competition, and is upbeat they can hold their own against Nigeria Professional Football League clubs when the new season gets underway, reports Completesportsnigeria.com.

Kwara United who are back in the top flight after spending two years in the NNL lost 4-2 on penalties to Go-Round FC of Omoku in the opening fixture of the competition at the Agege Stadium on Sunday.

The Harmony Boys dominated the game, but were punished for their profligacy in front of goal.

Obuh is however unconcerned with the outcome of the game and is looking forward to a good season.

“We lost (against Go-Round) because we failed to convert our chances in the first half. There are a lot ofpositives from the game which we can be happy about even as we have some things to work on too,” Obuh tells Completesportsnigeria.com.‎

“It’s not a big deal if we don’t win the competition as the sole aim of the competition is to help all the teams prepare for the new season.

“For us, I believe we are ready for the new season and well prepared to flow with the big boys in the NPFL.”

The former Golden Eaglets coach is however disappointed with the format of the competition.

“I don’t understand why we have to play two games in the competition. I believe it’s not right. We would have love a situation where we play more games to prepare us for the new season,” Obuh adds.

“We have the opportunity of playing in a pre-season competition in Port Harcourt where we would have played more games but we opted to participate in the Super Four.

” In the future, it will be good to look at the format. May be a kind of a league format where all the teams play against each other to determine the winner. “

Aregbesola Calls Omisore Lair, Tax Evader

Osogbo – Governor Rauf Aregbesola of Osun State has described the former deputy governor of the state, Iyiola Omisore, as a shameless liar who cannot be entrusted with position of authorities.

He was reacting, weekend, to some criticisms raised by Omisore of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) against his administration.

Aregbesola, who spoke during a colloquium organised by Progressives e-group, a youth group, at Atlantis Hotel, Osogbo, said Omisore as chairman of Senate Committee for Appropriation for eight years had no single record of achievement to point at in the state and in particular his home town, Ile-Ife.

The governor said Omisore and his political party (PDP) were not morally qualified to criticise his government because they had been tested and failed the people of the state.

He also referred to Omisore, who was the PDP candidate in the 2014 governorship election in the state, as a tax defaulter who only paid N25,000 in 2013 as tax and had since failed to file his tax returns.

Omisore had in a statement issued by Jide Fatokun, his media aide, alleged that Aregbesola’s administration plunged the people of the state into a huge debt to the tune of N416 billion and that the 2018 budget recently presented to the House of Assembly was a product of bankruptcy and paucity of knowledge in public finance by the administration.

Omisore also queried why the Aregbesola-led administration would continue to blame the previous administrations for socio-economic challenges of the state, describing it as a reflection of administrative incompetence, adding that Aregbesola was owing salaries and allowances of workers to the tune of N119 billion.

According to the governor, Omisore, who could not execute a single project for the state and his community throughout his eight years in the Senate, even as chairman of Senate Committee on Appropriation, has no moral justification to rubbish his achievements.

He noted that Esinmirin river in Ile-Ife, which caused death of hundreds of people, was dredged and expanded by his government to save lives, adding that Omisore only paid lip service to the several projects done when he was in office and nothing was done to complete them.

Aregbesola further revealed that the Ifewara road project awarded to Omisore by the Federal Government was abandoned and the huge sum of money paid not returned to government coffers.

He stressed that before Omisore could have the moral justification to criticise his administration, he should first of all refund all the money he was alleged to have looted in office by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Aregbesola cautioned Omisore to stop misleading the people of the state with falsehood about his government

His words: “Omisore is not qualified to rubbish my administration. For the eight years he spent in the Senate and in spite of his position, Omisore did not do anything for our people even the people of Ile-Ife where he hails from.

“Before Omisore could be entitled to condemn my government, he should go to the EFCC and complete the refund of money that he looted from the national treasury.”

Mudasir Ayanfe, coordinator of the Progressives e-Group, in his address, said the group was established four years ago to build synergy and fellowship among youths and those who believe in the administrative style of Aregbesola.
