Pulse Opinion: Arsenal have lost fear factor for Chelsea

Arsenal have lost fear factor for Chelsea

Recent encounters suggest that Arsenal are not longer afraid of Chelsea

Arsenal defeated Chelsea yet  again this season, this time in the Carabao Cup semi final, this write up argues that Arsene Wenger's team have have lost the fear factor for Chelsea.

Psychological Battle

Rewind back to Chelsea under Jose Mourinho, the Portuguese set up his Chelsea side to 'beat' Arsenal at almost any given time.

It did not matter if Arsenal had 500% possession, victory was certain or rather defeat was not an option.

All it took was a direct long ball from midfield to chief tormentor Didier Drogba, and the rest is history.

It seemed that no matter what Arsenal do they could not just get a substantial victory.

Throught Mourinho's reign in his first stint at Chelsea in was a torn in Wenger's flesh, both on and off the pitch.

That battle and fighting spirit was transmitted to his players on the field as they always upped their game when facing their London rivals.

That mantle was passed down to precceding coaches, Avram Grant and Carlo Ancelloti who maintained the status quo.

Even Mourinho returned for his second stint, the trend continued,  Diego Costa the new menace to strike fear in the hearts of Arsenal defenders.

Even when Chelsea were having their worst season in 2015, the blues still defeated the gunners, it was a psychological warfare that has been established in the minds of Chelsea players.

Arsene Wenger's record against Mourinho at Chelsea

Played 14, Won 0, Draws 6, Lost 8

However, in recent times Arsenal have fought back since the departure of Mourinho

Difference Chelsea Under Conte

Under Antonio Conte, Chelsea fans are witnessing something they have not been used to in recent times.

Since the Italian took over at Chelsea, the blues have won just one of their last eight meetings with their London rivals. Against Antonio Conte  Arsenal have won  four, drawn three and lost one)

It is not just that Chelsea lost, it is the pattern of these defeats that suggest that Arsenal now feel more comfortable playing against Chelsea.

Arsenal beat Chelsea to win the FA Cup, Community shield and in the semi-final of the Carabao Cup.

The manner of these defeats where silverware is at stake is a pointer that Arsenal have turned the tides,

Without no doubt Wenger is Conte's Nightmare.

Italian jinx?

Arsene Wenger may have his shortcomings but he has a pretty decent head to head record against Italian managers, which could be an explanation for the sudden dominance over Chelsea in recent times.

Arsene Wenger overall record versus Italian managers

Claudio Ranieri           Won 10 drew 6 lost 1

Antonio Conte            Won 4 drew 3 lost 1

Gianluca Vialli              Won 3 drew 2 lost 2

Guus Hiddink             Won 0 drew 0 lost 3

Carlo Ancellotti           Won 2 drew 1 lost 5

Roberto Mancini        Won 2 drew 2 lost 3

Roberto Di Matteo    Won 1 drew 1 lost 2

Strategy: Dating is getting even more complicated — here are 5 more terms you need to know in 2018

null

As if it wasn't bad enough.

If you thought the world of ghosting, stashing, and sidebarring was bad, things are about to get worse.

Modern dating is tough, and sometimes it can feel like everyone else has a manual to follow while you're left in the dark wondering if anyone will ever love you.

The game playing makes it even more complicated. When are you supposed to arrange the second date? How long do you wait until you phone or text the person you're interested in?

Of course, social media only perpetuates our anxieties.

However, thanks to dating website Plenty of Fish, there are names for all the digital dating behaviours you're likely to come across in 2018 — and most of them are linked to our phones, according to the site's dating expert Shannon Smith.

"[They] can often be avoided by communicating clearly with someone we're dating, and being mindful of our tech manners," she told Business Insider. "For instance, 'Cricketing' and 'Ghostbusting' are simply by-products of attempting to spare someone's feelings, or avoiding an awkward conversation that we shouldn't shy away from. And we all know that phoneless 'Flexting' has been going on since the dawn of time.

She added: "Singles in 2018 are incredibly savvy daters, and are more empowered than ever to make the best choices for them when it comes to their romantic dealings. But in a fast-paced world with so much choice, sometimes we all need a reminder that dating should be fun!"

Here are the five new dating behaviours to be aware of in 2018 — then you can go back to swiping away to your heart's content, knowing what you're getting yourself into.

1. Flexting

Flexting is digitally boasting to impress your date before you meet them in real life. According to Plenty of Fish data, 47% of single people have experienced this, via a person who brags to them over texts to big themselves up.

It's usually women on the receiving end of this behaviour, with 63% reporting having gotten messages like this, compared to just 38% of men.

2. Cricketing

Cricketing someone is when you leave them on "read" for too long. In some cases it can take days for the other person to reply and continue the conversation. Instead of getting a response, the sender is met with silence. Cue the crickets.

The majority of single people, 67% of them, have said they've waited patiently for a reply and have gotten it way later than expected. We're all just busy, okay?

3. Ghostbusting

This is one for the people who don't give up. Ghostbusting is where you continue to text someone when they are straight up ignoring you (ghosting).

According to Plenty of Fish, a massive 78% of single millennials have been ghosted by someone they were dating. In the current callous, cowardly world of dating, it's good to know there are some perseverent people left — 38% of people reported someone wouldn't stop texting them after they tried to phase them out.

4. Seredipidating

With seredipidating, you leave things up to fate, and put off a date just in case someone else comes along who you like more.

Nearly a third of singles said they believe the grass is always greener, and have admitted to putting off a day and time to meet for a date, just on the off-chance they meet someone in the interim. There has to be a limit though, as otherwise you'll be swiping forever — alone.

5. Fauxbae'ing

Fauxbae'ing is a curious habit 19% of single men have witnessed. It's when someone pretends to have a significant other over social media, when they're actually single.

(AKA: Bae caught me slippin.)

It's probably a tactic to make an ex jealous, or an attempt to make nosey family members leave you alone. Either way it's a bit weird.

A Focus On Obasanjo’s Letter To Buhari

What Obasanjo’s letter says:

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo last Tuesday stirred the hornet nest when in a strongly worded 13-page statement, he called on President Muhammadu Buhari not to seek re-election in 2019.

Obasanjo, in the letter, which was given very wide publicity and was entitled, “The Way Out: A Clarion Call for Coalition for Nigeria Movement,” said President Buhari had performed far below expectation and should honourably “dismount from the horse” to join the league of the country’s former leaders whose “experience, influence, wisdom and outreach can be deployed on the side line for the good of the country.”

Obasanjo, a two-term president on the platform of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), said he felt disappointed by Buhari, whom he supported during the 2015 election over then incumbent and candidate of his former party, Goodluck Jonathan.

Obasanjo had written a condemnatory open letter in December 2013 titled “Before it is Too Late” where he highlighted the numerous failings of the Jonathan administration.

Obasanjo argued that his decision to go against Mr Jonathan at the time was the right one, as events in the last three years have since proved, was for the good of the nation and nothing personal.

While thanking Buhari for the effort of his administration in rolling back the Boko Haram insurgency and his fight against corruption, Obasanjo said Buhari has ultimately failed in other areas where he had thought he would be efficient.

The former President admitted he knew that Buhari was weak in handling the economy. He said he however went ahead and voted for him because at the time “it was a matter of ‘any option but Jonathan’” and because he thought Buhari would appoint qualified Nigerians to help out in that area.

He slammed Buhari for turning a blind eye to corruption within his government saying it amounted to condonation and cover-up, saying whoever is “going to justice must be with clean hands.”

Obasanjo berated Buhari for allowing the clashes between herdsmen and farmers to go “sour” and messy saying the endorsement of the President by some governors to seek re-election barely 24 hours after 73 people who were killed by herdsmen in Benue State were given mass burial was “a sad symptom of insensitivity and callousness.”

Obasanjo delivered his harshest words for the President when he spoke of Buhari’s clannishness, lack of understanding of the dynamics of politics, and his tendencies to pass the buck of his government’s inadequacies to the immediate past administration.

“But there are three other areas where President Buhari has come out more glaringly than most of us thought we knew about him.  One is nepotic deployment bordering on clannishness and inability to bring discipline to bear on errant members of his nepotic court.  This has grave consequences on performance of his government to the detriment of the nation.  It would appear that national interest was being sacrificed on the altar of nepotic interest.  What does one make of a case like that of Maina: collusion, condonation, ineptitude, incompetence, dereliction of responsibility or kinship and friendship on the part of those who should have taken visible and deterrent disciplinary action?  How many similar cases are buried, ignored or covered up and not yet in the glare of the media and the public?

“The second is his poor understanding of the dynamics of internal politics.  This has led to wittingly or unwittingly making the nation more divided and inequality has widened and become more pronounced.  It also has effect on general national security.

“The third is passing the buck.  For instance, blaming the Governor of the Central Bank for devaluation of the naira by 70% or so and blaming past governments for it, is to say the least, not accepting one’s own responsibility.  Let nobody deceive us, economy feeds on politics and because our politics is depressing, our economy is even more depressing today.  If things were good, President Buhari would not need to come in.  He was voted to fix things that were bad and not engage in the blame game.”

Since former President Obasanjo’s letter, a lot of Nigerians have been speaking on it, with many supporting that President Buhari should just complete his first term and step aside.

Obasanjo’s Timely, Says IYC President

Barrister Roland Pereotubo Oweilaemi, President, Ijaw Youth Congress (IYC), Worldwide, has said that former President Obasanjo’s advice to President Buhari to retire from politics in 2019 was timely and an affirmation of the wishes of the majority of Nigerians.

The IYC president said that in critical analysis of the style of governance by the present government, hardly could any Nigerian accept Buhari coming back for second tenure.

Oweilaemi said: “Buhari’s Presidency represents different things to different Nigerians on the negative note. The entire country is wailing and we cannot afford to have a continuation of this political attrition. The call for regime change at this critical time of our very existence is a clarion call that all lovers of democracy must endorse. The suffering in the land is getting to a head and things must not be allowed to continue the way it is.

“To us in the Niger Delta region, the call for a regime change means a socio-political harmony and national cohesion. As the former President has clearly stated that he was only advising the government, IYC also advises the President to rescind his ambition of contesting for second tenure.

“It will more honourable, especially for the sake of our peaceful coexistence if he does not contest. Let him be a statesman and maintain his integrity for the purpose of conducting hitch-free elections in 2019. IYC therefore endorses former President Obasanjo’s advice on President Buhari not to contest in 2019.”

Buhari Should Heed Obasanjo’s Advice – Onuesoke

Chief Sunny Onuesoke, a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain in Delta State, has supported the call by former President Obasanjo that President Buhari should go and rest after the end of his first tenure.

Onuesoke, a former governorship aspirant in Delta State, in his reaction said the current security and economic logjam are enough indices for Buhari and his APC government to quit the stage before further damage is done to the country.

He added that Obasanjo, through his letter, had vindicated him. He said: “I said it on his (PMB) 75 years birthday on the 28th of December, 2017 that he should resign as president and go and rest. What Obasanjo said is not new to me. As for Buhari, he is overdue for retirement.”

There Is Nothing Wrong In Obasanjo’s Letter – Security Analyst

Mike Ejiofor, an Umuahia-based international security analyst, said there is nothing untoward in the letter written by the former President Obasanjo to President Buhari on the state of the nation and the way forward.

He said the letter was not the first time such a letter to a sitting President would emanate from the same source, noting that during the Goodluck Jonathan’s Presidency, Nigerians read a similar letter which ostensibly set the tone for the 2015 general elections.

Ejiofor stressed that it would be wrong for anyone to assume that if Obasanjo wrote to one President, he would not write to those after him,  insisting that whether it was a letter of commendation or condemnation, Nigerians and sitting Presidents must continually look forward to it from that same source, unless he is no more.

He said: “I don’t think there should be any fuss concerning the letter from the former President.  And I don’t think anybody should view the letter from any other angle save from what the letter has expressed. It is a former President writing to a fellow, even though one is past and the other present.  I believe that this kind of thing is good for our democracy and also good for good governance.

“President Obasanjo will be doing this great country a disservice if he derelict in his position as a former President to lend his voice to issues affecting the economic and social well being of Nigeria and Nigerians.  Once he fails to recognise his worth and submit to primordial sentiment, then he will no longer be worth the oath of office he took as the President of Nigeria.

“As a former President he is an elder statesman and that has provided him grounds to speak out for and against issues affecting the nation, no matter whose ox is gored.  In the past, the former President had commended President Buhari and if he sees something else, should he keep quiet over the new development?

“And in any case, unlike the letter to President Jonathan, he commended President Buhari on the war on corruption, but only said the President should consider and see if Nigeria was moving in the direction he had hoped for while running for the office of President.  So, I don’t see anything wrong with him writing a letter to the sitting President.

“Nigerians will still expect the thing from President Buhari when he leaves office because, whether he leaves in 2019 or 2023, the bottom line is that there is a set time and when it comes, the posture is what Nigerians will expect from him.  He must rise above every sentiment and proffer ideas on how to make things easier for the people.

“Finally, I want to say that what he (Obasanjo) has advanced is an advice to the sitting President, which he (Buhari) is at liberty to accept or discard.  If President Buhari sees any merit in it, he, as an elder statesman, will act.  If he needs clarification, he will ask for it.  So, the first overall decision lies with President Buhari and I don’t want to believe that the action of President Buhari will be dictated by the letter, but from his own conviction that it is the right decision to take.

Obasanjo Can Only Advise Buhari To Retire  – NCP Chief

Abdullahi Salaudeen, the Niger State Chairman of the National Conscience Party (NCP), maintained  that “Obasanjo can by way of advice and as a former colleague call of President Buhari to retire if, and of course if he (Obasanjo) I believe is joining other Nigerians because he sees that deliberately or not deliberately things are not working the way Nigerians had envisaged when they gathered their ‘Toro-toro’ and ‘Kobo-kobo’ to ensure that Buhari emerged President because of what they believed he could do.

“Agreed, Chief Obasanjo is an elder statesman. He is a two-time President of this country. As a Military Head of State and twice a civilian President, he has no prerogative powers constitutionally to tell President Buhari not to re-contest in 2019, but can only do that on the basis of Freedom of Speech and by way of advice for Buhari not to disgrace himself to avoid Nigerian masses who can as well stop him with the powers of their voters card.

“In essence, Buhari has the constitutional rights to seek re-election, Nigerians has the rights through their voter cards to decide if he (Buhari) can continue or not while the like of Obasanjo only has constitutional powers to advice him as a former colleague in the Nigerian Army not to disgrace himself but not to decide who contests 2019 Presidency as Buhari may be interested in.”

Obasanjo’s Letter Is The Best From A Statesman – PDP Legal Adviser

Barrister Emmanuel Enoidem, the National Legal Adviser,  Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has deescribed former President Obasanjo’s open letter to President Buhari as the best that could come from a statesman.

The PDP chieftain said: “Having failed Nigerians woefully, it was only necessary for someone to boldly tell the Present Buhari-led administration the truth.”

He declared as ‘nonsensical’ any attempt by President Buhari to seek a second term in office, as such could only result from a satisfactory performance and not the level of failure recorded by the administration.

“Buhari’s government is the worst in the history of Nigeria. The administration has added nothing of value to Nigeria, because every indices for measuring success in any administration, especially in the areas of security and economy, have proven to be negative in the case of the present administration.

“Second term is not a reward for failure, it should be a reward for hardwork. Having failed in the first term, it would be most honourable for Buhari to just finish his first term and bow out. He should not even think of a second term please,” he said

Enoidem advised those who are eager to support the present administration for a second term to rather re-channel such energies to support the administration to fulfil at least few of its electioneering promises and lead Nigerians off the difficult situation it pushed the nation into.

‘Obasanjo Did The Right Thing’

Alfred Ihiogbe, a Benin-based lawyer and human rights activist, said; “The former President did the right thing by advising the President, as a close friend and former colleague in the military.

He stressed: “Obasanjo, if you may recall, supported Buhari openly during the 2015 election after writing a similar letter to then President Goodluck Jonathan.  Obasanjo is morally right to say all he said in his letter to the President because there is a saying in my community that it is only your close friend that can tell you that your mouth smells.

“I read the letter and l discovered that Chief Obasanjo was very civil in his language all through. We are all witnesses of what has been going on in the country, especially in the past few weeks. I have never seen a situation where a President of a country will be so silent that he could not make a statement after learning that 73 persons were killed by herdsmen, let alone visiting the state to console the Governor of that state.

“We are not saying that he should visit the scene of the incident, but the state capital. Instead, he summoned the governor and some leaders of the state to the Presidency, and these are people mourning.

“I was a witness to the Jesse fire incident of 1998 in Ethiope West Local Government area of Delta State. The then Head of State, General Abdusallam Abubakar, was less than three months old in office when that incident occurred.  He flew in a helicopter to the scene of the incident the same day it happened.

“The Jesse incident victims were people who went to scoop fuel in a ruptured pipeline which is an offence of its own. Yet, the Head of State didn’t look at that angle of the law against the state by the victims. He flew there to condole with the then Military Administrator of Delta State, who waited for him at the scene of the incident.

“Unlike the Benue incident where innocent people were murdered in cold blood in their homes, only for the President to summon the governor and some leaders of the state and asked them to be accommodative and be their brothers’ keepers.

“I am not saying that was what prompted Obasanjo’s letter. I am using that as an example and Obasanjo didn’t mention that Benue incident in his letter because he may have viewed it as a serious security issue that could degenerate to something else if he points it out.

“As for the letter, I believe it is a good advice to Mr. President, as his friend who he joined others to campaign for to be president. If he discovers that Buhari is not    meeting his expectations, Obasanjo has every right to advise him because to me the former president spoke the mind of the majority of Nigerians.

“For me, I must confess that it has never been so bad in this country. Is it in the area of the economy, security, roads, education, health, name it. Which area? We pray that God will salvage the country.”

Content Of Obasanjo’s Letter Is Right – Activist

Comrade Adegbenle Adebiyi, an activist, said the content of former President Obasanjo’s letter was right and personal. He said that Obasanjo should not be condemned for making the statement, which he said was germane to the growth and economic development of the country.

Adebiyi noted that some of the issues raised in the letter were necessary at this crucial period, stressing that the nation is drifting and should be brought back to right track.

According to him, “former President Obasanjo is a nationalist and his opinion is good for the success and growth of the country. That was why the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Muhammed, said some of the issues raised in the letter were well taken and that the government would look and key into it.

“As a corrective measure, the issues raise will help the government to sit up and make some necessary adjustment. It tells the whole world that there are some appointments that were made that are done without consideration for unity and peace of the country.”

While advocating for immediate cabinet reshuffle by President Buhari, Adebiyi noted that the present cabinet is concentrated in a particular region or section, adding that President Buhari needs to work on that.

He stressed: “There is also the need for the Federal Government to inject professionals and economists into the cabinet to look into the future of the country on how to make the country to survive.”

Controlling anger (2)

By Femi Aribisala

One of the ways we can control our anger is by overlooking offences.  Solomon counsels: “A wise man restrains his anger and overlooks insults.

This is to his credit.” (Proverbs 19:11).  Your busybody friend who is a news-broadcaster asks: “Do you know Ngozi says you are a cheapskate?”  Simply reply: “Good for her.”  Jesus says: “I do not accept praise from men.” (John 5:41).  If so, neither should we accept insults but should ignore them.

David provides a practical response: “I, like a deaf man, do not hear; and I am like a mute who does not open his mouth. Thus I am like a man who does not hear, and in whose mouth is no response. For in you, O LORD, I hope; you will hear, O Lord my God.” (Psalm 38:13-15).

Pay no attention to insults.  Don’t allow the pettiness of others to bother you.  Leave everything to God, our Father.

Nurtured anger

Unfortunately, many of us harbour bitterness in our hearts because of offences.  As a result, we become prone to malicious acts, contrary to the ways of Christ.  Yes, when someone sins against us, we may be offended.  Nevertheless, we should endeavour to be angry at the sin and not necessarily at the sinner.  Anger at sinners often leads to bitterness and hatred, which can destroy us from within.

Anger is wrong when it is cherished and heightened by reflection.  When you have had time to dwell upon the wrong done to you, you end up by embellishing and broadening it.  In the process, you may recall that the head of the offender is actually bigger than usual and thereby abuse his creator.  “Look at that stupid head of his!

The devil will always try to influence you negatively and irritate your spirit.  Jesus says the Holy Spirit will bring to our remembrance the word of God.  Our adversary, the devil, on the other hand, brings to remembrance every wrong done in the past, the better to agitate and aggravate the wounded spirit.

Thus, anger is wrong when accompanied by an unforgiving spirit.  This becomes even worse when it leads to the determination to revenge and exact the utmost satisfaction for the injury.  This is presumptive because vengeance is God’s exclusive purview.  He says: “Vengeance is mine, I will repay.” (Hebrews 10:30).  It is dangerous to arrogate to ourself that which belongs to God.

Amnon raped Tamar, Absalom’s sister.  Absalom became incensed, but he hid his anger in his heart for two years.  Thereafter, at an opportune moment: “Absalom ordered his men, “Listen! When Amnon is in high spirits from drinking wine and I say to you, ‘Strike Amnon down,’ then kill him. Don’t be afraid. Have not I given you this order? Be strong and brave.” So Absalom’s men did to Amnon what Absalom had ordered.” (2 Samuel13:28-29).

From that time, Absalom entered a slippery slope that ended in his death and destruction.  The object of anger should not be to injure but self-protection.

Hypocrites

The Absalom type of malice is most distressing in its prevalence among Christians.  Some are malicious because somebody is rich, or beautiful, or articulate, or skilful.  Others are malicious because of inferiority complexes.  They are insecure and cannot stand those who do not seem to have the problems or difficulties they have.

Thus, they end up “speaking lies in hypocrisy.” (1 Timothy 4:2).  “Why don’t you like Ojo?”  “I love him with the love of God.”  Of course you don’t. But you cannot answer truthfully because it would reveal a part of you that you don’t want to admit, or are inclined to hide.

“Do you have feelings of malice against Fred?”  “No! God knows that I have forgiven him.”  Well, pull this other leg.  When you see Fred what happens?  He just suddenly comes into a room and your stomach turns.  Suddenly you notice that his ears are like flying saucers and his teeth like cutlasses.

Self-righteousness

Unresolved malice is the foundation of an evil heart.  You simply resent everything the other person does.  He cannot seem to do anything right as far as you are concerned.  This easily leads to outbursts of temper against him, which is called wrath.  Wrath becomes anger, which is a state of negative emotional agitation.  Anger can easily lead to clamour, which is quarrelling.  Quarrelling leads to habitual evil-speaking about someone.

This progression takes you out of the kingdom of God into the kingdom of darkness.  Therefore, the tendency must be avoided and resisted through the efficacy of prayer: “Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamour, and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice. And be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you.” (Ephesians 4:31-32).

Make no mistake about it; in any quarrel, you are not blameless.  We need to be reminded of this time and time again.  It often takes two to quarrel.  You can refuse to take the bait even when provoked.  In any case, as some have offended you, so have you offended others.  Anger, then, is sometimes born of self-righteousness.  We are fully convinced we are in the right.  But what we want is Christ’s righteousness and not self-righteousness.

In his self-righteousness, David unwittingly pronounced a death sentence on himself.  When Nathan told him about a rich man who took a poor man’s lamb: “David’s anger was greatly aroused against the man, and he said to Nathan, ‘As the LORD lives, the man who has done this shall surely die! And he shall restore fourfold for the lamb, because he did this thing and because he had no pity.’” (2 Samuel 12:5-6).

It took David a while to realise he was the proverbial wicked rich man.  We are often especially angry at those things we ourselves are guilty of.  David was angry that someone whom God had prospered would be so selfish.  But he failed to recognise he was the man in question.  When we do something wrong, there is usually a good excuse for our actions.  But when the wrongdoing is by someone else, it is inexcusable.  This is hypocritical.

Grace of God

A believer should be slow to anger.  Solomon says: “It is better to be slow-tempered than famous; it is better to have self-control than to control an army.” (Proverbs 16:32).  If you have dealt harshly with someone in anger, go to the person and ask for forgiveness.  Sometimes when you do this, the person concerned is not magnanimous.  He might become uppity and inclined to aggravate you the more.

“So you have finally come to your senses and have now decided to apologise?” he asks.  Don’t be distracted.  Keep your eye on the ball.  It is the kingdom of God you seek, so don’t be provoked anew.

Have you really received a free pardon from the Lord?  Have your sins been forgiven?

Then it behoves you to forgive seventy times seven times.  If you were in the wrong, you must pray to God to give you the grace to admit your wrongdoing.  If you were in the right, you must equally ask for the grace not to be conceited.

Do so right now without delay.

Sports: The Warriors are so far ahead of the rest of the NBA they're finding new ways to keep themselves busy

stephen curry

The Golden State Warriors are cruising while many other NBA teams seem to be collapsing, so Steve Kerr is trying to fight off malaise.

  • Steve Kerr said the Golden State Warriors need to "reset" and re-focus their priorities.
  • While Kerr said he doesn't focus on individual games with his team, he said he sees larger trends that need fixing.
  • At a time when the rest of the NBA seems to be falling apart with infighting, the Warriors are cruising along, and it seems as though Kerr is simply looking for ways to motivate his team.

The NBA seems to be falling apart.

The Cleveland Cavaliers are fighting and blaming Kevin Love, the San Antonio Spurs are "disconnected" from Kawhi Leonard, and the Milwaukee Bucks fired Jason Kidd, which "devastated" Giannis Antetokounmpo.

And those are just three major storylines of the last week. The Washington Wizards had a team meeting that didn't solve anything, and then were blown out by the Dallas Mavericks as Mavs point guard J.J. Barea said nobody likes John Wall.

Damian Lillard had a meeting with Portland Trail Blazers owner Paul Allen to ensure the team is focused on winning.

The NBA has had several on-court altercations in the past two weeks, highlighted by the Houston Rockets confronting the Los Angeles Clippers in the Clippers' locker room.

Elsewhere, teams like the Charlotte Hornets are considering blowing it up and trading Kemba Walker, though team owner Michael Jordan may not be fully on board.

In the midst of all of this, the Golden State Warriors say they need to "reset."

The Warriors' drama is different from other teams. The Warriors aren't perfect, but they're close to it. Teams with championship aspirations often drag through the regular season as they await the postseason when things really begin. But the Warriors aren't even most championship teams. They're first in offensive rating and fifth in defensive rating, and their net rating — the total by which they outscore teams per 100 possessions — is still the best in the league.

But head coach Steve Kerr sees some problems with his team. When the Warriors lost to the Rockets on Saturday, they turned the ball over 19 times and sent the Rockets to the free throw line 29 times. That's sloppy, and the Warriors have always battled sloppiness.

Yet Kerr's reaction to it tells you all you need to know about the Warriors.

So, Kerr told reporters, he sees a trend with his team and it's time to "reset" and get them back on track.

"There are key points in the year where we have to hit the reset button in terms of our priorities and now is one of those times," Kerr said. "This is an important week for us in a standpoint of we need to take care of the ball, we need to be smart, make good decisions. If we do that, we're really really hard to beat."

Kerr has echoed similar sentiments before. He said on " target="_blank"The Bill Simmons Podcast" in December that he was expecting his team go through ebbs and flows.

"It's just human nature. The motivation wanes a little bit, and the edge, you lose your edge," Kerr said, adding that the team doesn't have much internal drama.

"There's a malaise that has settled in," Kerr said. "It's a long way off until the playoffs start and we just don't have that same edge that we've had the last couple years. And I'm perfectly fine with it because, like I said, it's human nature and we've got to kind of in some ways pace ourselves and get to the end of the year."

It's worth considering what that "malaise" is, though. Since beginning the season 4-3, the Warriors have gone 35-7. Two weeks ago they outclassed their biggest rivals, the Cavaliers, who appear to be falling apart and going through the exact type of slog that Kerr described.

The Warriors can't get too comfortable, and Kerr knows that. The Rockets do appear to be a potential threat to the Warriors, the Spurs will always be around, and talented teams like the Oklahoma City Thunder and Minnesota Timberwolves are jelling and starting to improve.

But at a time when drama seems to be pervading through the league, it's hardly noticeable that the league's clear-cut best team is cruising right along, even if Kerr doesn't think so.

Politics: Trump reportedly complains about why he can't just have 'my guys' at the 'Trump Justice Department' do his bidding

Donald Trump

Trump has complained in recent weeks that he doesn't understand why he can't just order "my guys" at the "Trump Justice Department" to do his bidding.

  • President Donald Trump reportedly complained about why he can't get "my guys" at the "Trump Justice Department" to do his bidding.
  • The comments were published in a Saturday Washington Post report.

President Donald Trump has complained in recent weeks that he doesn't understand why he can't just order "my guys" at the "Trump Justice Department" to do his bidding, two people familiar with the remarks told The Washington Post.

The Post reported Saturday that Trump made the comments to aides and confidants as other examples of the president's effort to influence the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election and whether his campaign colluded with Russian officials are reported. Earlier this week, The New York Times reported that Trump ordered White House counsel Donald McGahn to fire special counsel Robert Mueller last June, but McGahn threatened to resign, which caused Trump to back off.

The comments were published in a story that highlighted how Trump sought to make public a secret document that Republicans believe could undermine Mueller's investigation. Trump made clear that his desire is to release the memo, which is at odds with the Justice Department's position. The Post reported that White House chief of staff John Kelly made clear to Attorney General Jeff Sessions what Trump's view on the matter was.

The DOJ earlier warned that releasing the memo authored by staff for House Intelligence Committee chairman Devin Nunes, a California Republican, would be "extraordinarily reckless" without an official review.

Whether or not the document is released is ultimately up to Congress. It suggests the FBI possibly relied on politically motivated and questionable sources to obtain a surveillance warrant in the early days of the probe.

A senior administration official told The Post that Trump "is inclined to have that released just because it will shed light."

"Apparently all the rumors are that it will shed light, it will help the investigators come to a conclusion," they added.

World: Michigan state's defender led review of abuse

null

As reports against Dr. Lawrence G. Nassar flooded in a year ago, besieged officials at Michigan State University announced they had ordered an internal review. Overseeing it would be Patrick J. Fitzgerald

Five women have said in lawsuits that they reported sexual abuse by Nassar to university coaches, trainers or counselors as early as the late 1990s.

In 2014, a woman complained to the head of the university’s sports medicine clinic that Nassar had inappropriately touched her, prompting an earlier inquiry, not involving Fitzgerald, that concluded that his actions were “not of a sexual nature,” based on consultation with the doctor’s colleagues.

Yet just last month, Fitzgerald — whom the university portrayed as reviewing the Nassar cases even while he was defending Michigan State from lawsuits — wrote that no one at the university understood what Nassar was up to until the victims began going to the police in 2016.

While many in the community today wish that they had identified Nassar as a predator, we believe the evidence in this case will show that no one else at MSU knew that Nassar engaged in criminal behavior,” he wrote in a letter to the state’s attorney general, who had asked to see Fitzgerald’s report.

Fitzgerald added: There was no report.

As Michigan State finds itself under intense scrutiny for its handling of Nassar, critics of the university’s response, including lawyers for more than 100 victims, say they cannot understand how Michigan State officials did not take action years earlier. They question how the earlier complaints resulted in no apparent discipline.

And they accused the university of failing to conduct a top-to-bottom, truly independent investigation, settling instead for a review by a legal team that was also trying to protect Michigan State from any damage in the courts.

“Michigan State led the public to believe that there had been an independent investigation,” Tom Leonard, the Republican speaker of the Michigan House of Representatives, said Friday in an interview. “And then as we continued to dig into this, we found out it was not an independent investigation. It was an internal investigation to shield them from liability.”

Fitzgerald said Friday that his team had never been “engaged to produce a public report” on the Nassar case. He suggested that his team’s role had been misinterpreted by some. In fact, the initial contract between Michigan State and Fitzgerald’s firm makes no mention of carrying out an independent investigation or producing any report.

“We were engaged to provide counsel regarding anticipated litigation and to make sure that any internal reviews did not interfere with the two law enforcement inquiries underway,” he said, referring to criminal investigations that led to Nassar’s guilty plea and sentencing. “In the course of gathering facts for the representation, the team of attorneys and investigators has conducted approximately one hundred interviews and reviewed a large number of documents. Our work is still ongoing.”

Under the terms of the law firm’s contract, the lawyers were to defend the university in lawsuits, facilitate “cooperation” with law enforcement and provide “counseling on any internal reviews conducted to make sure they are carried out in a manner that will best assist the university’s response.”

Though some women say they told university employees about abuse years ago, Fitzgerald wrote in December that no one who knew Nassar believed he could be capable of such behavior. “It is clear that Nassar fooled everyone around him — patients, friends, colleagues and fellow doctors at MSU,” Fitzgerald wrote.

Over the months since they hired Fitzgerald, 57, and his team of lawyers, Michigan State officials have highlighted his review — sometimes noting Fitzgerald’s involvement by name — as a sign of the seriousness of their response. Lou Anna K. Simon, who resigned as president Wednesday, had portrayed the university’s review as a robust and “tireless effort” that would go on as long as needed. “Even as we examine — through both criminal investigations and a thorough internal review — how something so abhorrent happened here and went on for so long, we are taking action,” she said last April.

Nassar was sentenced to 40 to 175 years in prison Wednesday after days of wrenching testimony from more than 150 women who have accused him of molesting them while he was a doctor for Michigan State and the national gymnastics team. The president stepped down hours later.

By week’s end, Michigan State’s athletic director, Mark Hollis, had also resigned. And two outside agencies — the federal education department and the Michigan attorney general — had begun what the university’s critics hoped would be truly independent investigations into its handling of Nassar.

On Friday, Joel I. Ferguson, a Michigan State trustee, said he agreed with criticism that “we have the person who was defending us investigating us.”

“There was a conflict,” he added.

But Brian Breslin, the chairman of the board of trustees, said he had “every confidence” in Fitzgerald’s interviews and information. “He never developed a report and was never asked to,” he said.

Asked whether there was a conflict in employing the same person to both defend and review the institution, Breslin said he had no comment.

Michigan State was dealing with a public relations crisis and a growing number of lawsuits when it hired Fitzgerald, who as the U.S. attorney in Chicago had built a reputation as a meticulously prepared, unyielding foe of crooks.

Declaring that the corruption would “make Lincoln roll over in his grave,” Fitzgerald oversaw the prosecution of Rod R. Blagojevich, the idiosyncratic former governor of Illinois accused of trying to get something in exchange for an appointment to the U.S. Senate seat that Barack Obama vacated when he was elected president.

Fitzgerald drew national attention by getting a conviction in a CIA leak case against I. Lewis Libby Jr., the former chief of staff for then Vice President Dick Cheney. And he had worked on high-profile terrorism cases from New York, including the trials of four defendants in connection with the 1998 bombings of U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania.

“As far as investigating something, there’s absolutely nobody better,” Sam Adam Jr., one of Blagojevich’s defense lawyers, said. “As a criminal defense attorney, I can tell you, he was so good at applying pressure to people.”

But Fitzgerald’s role in the Michigan State case is not as prosecutor. Since 2016, Michigan State’s trustees have paid him and his law firm, Skadden, Arps, along with other lawyers, to deal with the Nassar case and to respond to litigation against the school. The true scope and purpose of the lawyers’ internal review have become a matter of fierce debate in recent days, but the trustees last February said the lawyers’ role was to “represent the university in all aspects of this matter,” adding, “This representation will include conducting the factual review necessary to address the allegations being made and to assess Nassar’s former work at the university.”

A Michigan State contract with Fitzgerald’s firm included an hourly rate of up to $990. The ABC affiliate in Detroit reported this month that Fitzgerald’s firm has billed the university nearly $4.1 million.

“The public relations team at Michigan State gave the impression that he was going to do some sort of dispassionate, independent investigation, and that simply was not true,” said John C. Manly, a lawyer for more than 100 of the women who have sued or made claims against Michigan State.

Manly said no one from Michigan State or its legal team had sought to interview his clients about what had happened. Fitzgerald said his team took “affirmative steps” not to interview victims of the abuse because of ethics rules restricting contact with plaintiffs in civil cases.

Among the women suing are five who reported feeling uncomfortable or violated to coaches, trainers and counselors in the late 1990s and early 2000s.

One of the women, Larissa Boyce, said she was molested by Nassar for over two years, beginning at age 16, while training with Michigan State’s youth gymnastics program in 1997 and 1998. Boyce said she had told the women’s gymnastics coach at the time, Kathie Klages. But instead of helping, the coach explained to Boyce that she was probably “misunderstanding” the situation and implied that Boyce would get in trouble if she filed a more formal complaint, according to a lawsuit.

Another gymnast said she had also told Klages about abuse by Nassar around that time. Klages retired last year amid the scandal. Her lawyer declined to comment, citing the pending litigation.

Michigan State’s policies require all employees to promptly report any sexual misconduct they learn about involving a faculty member, staff member or student. But it is not clear that any of the people who heard the complaints in the late 1990s and early 2000s reported it to university administrators.

In a court motion two weeks ago seeking to dismiss the case against the university and its employees, including Klages, Michigan State said supervisors did not even know there were allegations against Nassar until 2014, when another woman complained to the head of the university’s sports medicine clinic, Jeff Kovan, that Nassar had massaged her breasts, buttocks and vaginal area.

In that case, an investigator consulted with three doctors and a certified athletic trainer, who backed Nassar’s explanation that his actions were medically appropriate to treat the patient’s pain. Each of the four had a connection to Nassar: One of the doctors studied under him and was a colleague and friend, the investigative report said; one had known him since 1988 and was a classmate and teaching colleague; one had known him since 1995, and he had treated her daughter; and the trainer worked regularly with Nassar in the training room, an average four hours a week for 17 years.

The university found that Nassar’s actions were appropriate and “not of a sexual nature.”

Nassar continued to molest patients, according to lawsuits, and even as late as August 2016, just before victims began to go public, some Michigan State employees told gymnasts that Nassar’s methods were appropriate. The employees also sternly warned gymnasts not to speak to the media, according to allegations in court filings.
