JAY-Z is top of the nominations for the 60th Grammy Awards with eight categories.

Right behind him is Kendrick Lamar, whose “DAMN.” album scored seven; Bruno Mars with six; and Childish Gambino (aka actor Donald Glover), newcomers SZA and Khalid, and producer No I.D. (who worked on “4:44”) with five each.

The rap icon was the only artist to score nods in the top three categories (record, album, and song of the year) for his 13th studio album, “4:44,” while Mars’ “24K Magic,” and Gambino’s “‘Awaken, My Love!'” each landed two nominations in the general field.

Nigerian rapper and producer Tunji Ige got a Grammy nod in the Best R&B song for co-writing the hit single 'Location' by Khalid.

 

South African group Ladysmith Black Mambazo got two Grammy nominations in the Best World Music category and Best Children's Album category.

Burkinabe album, "FaBobo Yéyé: Belle Époque in Upper Volta," is nominated at the 2018 Grammys for Best Historical Album and Best Boxed Or Special Limited Edition Package.

The Grammys nominees were announced by Andra Day on "CBS This Morning" on Tuesday, October 28, 2017.

The 2018 Grammys will take place on January 28, 2018 at Madison Square Garden in New York.

In Ondo: 10 die in road crashes on Ijebu Ode-Ore expressway

According to eyewitnesses, the Ijebu Ode-Ore Expressway crash happened following a head-on collision of the two vehicles involved in the accident.

No fewer than 10 people died  on Sunday in a two separate fatal road accidents on the  Ijebu Ode-Ore Expressway at Agodogun area of Odigbo Local Government and at Ibaka Market in Akungba Akoko in Akoko-South West Local Government Area of Ondo State.

According to eyewitnesses, the Ijebu Ode-Ore Expressway crash happened following a head-on collision of the two vehicles involved in the accident.

In the Akungba Akoko accident, an eyewitness said  a truck with registration number LSD 509 XM had a brake failure and the driver lost control of the vehicle, ramming into a road side market in the town.

Mr Vincent  Jack, Ondo State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), confirmed the two accidents to newsmen.

He said the  Ore accident occurred at about 1.40 pm and involved a black Mercedes Benz jeep with registration number EPE 144 EW and a blue Toyota Carina car with number plate KTP 580 RG.

Jack said seven people were involved in the accident and six died on the spot while one was injured.

The commander said the accident was caused as a result over speeding  of the vehicles involved.

On the Akungba market accident, Jack said four people died while two were injured.

The FRSC boss said  the remains of the deceased had been deposited at the morgue of the State Specialist  Hospital in Ikare-Akoko while the injured were also taken to the same hospital for treatment.

He urged  motorists to avoid over speeding  and observe all rules and regulations on the highways.

Akwa-Ibom: From smart city to smart-state

First, it is essential to state that Akwa Ibom was the first State in Nigeria to establish and enthrone a State Information (IT) Policy and created a Science and Technology Office at the Cabinet level – represented by a Commissioner. True to type, the State has also become the first to appoint a full-fledged ICT professional as SSG.

Indeed, the ‘first kid on the block’ concept in contemporary development is not new. Chief Obafemi Awolowo applied it in 1955 when he enthroned ‘Free Education’ in the South-West and Bill Gates of MS and Steve Jobs of Apple PC applied it to fire and light-up the accelerated development of global ICT Ecosystem.

It was year 2003 – sitting on the dark windows of a Night Bus to Uyo – I headed into an adventure of the unknown. The mission was to explore the e-Readiness of Akwa Ibom State ICT development. Oblivious of the challenges before me, delighting from the bus on arrival on the early morning the next day, I was welcomed by a refreshing breeze full of rich oxygen engulfed in a distant voice of ‘Welcome to Uyo’.

It was at that moment that I realized that my mission was to lay a foundation for ICT as the most strategic imperative for the sustainable development and competitiveness of the State in the very near future.

Today, that future is here – giving us the privilege to look back and advance our evaluation as proof of concept for assessing 21st Century development and growth at the State level. Before we evaluate the advantages of Akwa Ibom State as one of the very first to establish an IT Policy, let’s look at the future of ICT e-readiness of Akwa Ibom State in view of the current state of things. Based on my assessment of the ICT landscape in Akwa Ibom 2016-2018, the state will be one of the most advanced ICT Smart-State in Nigeria and indeed perhaps the first to deploy Robots for Education, Health, State Security, Essential public service, etc for sustainable development (derived from her current advantages of small population of 5.4m, enormous resources and abundant intelligent pioneers with ‘Can-do Sprit’); Readiness for acceleration of robust ICT infrastructure development, with respect to State-wide Broadband Internet access, State of the Art Fibre Optics Network for state security and youth empowerment will unleash monumental innovation beyond basic imagination. The State would harness the advantages of Internet of Things and Nano Technologies as diversification strategy of Akwa Ibom economy from Oil & Gas to Information Intelligence resources in preparation for Information Society (IS).

Before others States realize the ICT State of Things in Akwa Ibom, the environment would have propelled the State from the shadows of ‘Smart-City’ to the villa to the metropolis of Smart-States by 2030. This would be actualized by intensifying AI and Machine to Machine (M2M) Solutions strategies and multiply the dividend to her people exponentially.

The secret of all these is hidden on the probability that the State government will promote the establishment State Innovation development Fund for Software Engineering Institutes (SDI), Code-accelerator based Education, Innovation Hubs, Critical Local Data centres, ICT Research Centres, etc – leading to position Akwa Ibom as the first destination for ICT Skill Resources and solutions to serve the nation and the ICT-hungry African market.

Today, as we speak, many States in Nigeria are yet to develop State ICT policy and their ICT development funding mechanisms are at the lowest bottom of the budget ladder. Flash back, the same scenario was experienced in 1955, when Chief Obafemi Awolowo established Free-Eduction in the South West Region of Nigeria, while others were asleep – making the South West the current leader in the statistical spread of those who can read, write and educated all through West Africa and beyond. That is not all, the South West ICT agenda of empowering many millions of its citizenry with ICT competence of ‘how to code’ will further put the region many miles ahead of the others in the next decades. That is where Akwa Ibom will stand tall amongst equals in the emerging creative society. The State has done well in ICT spend and investment over the years.

Moving forward with the deserved appointment of Dr, Emmanuel Ekuwem – an exceptional IT Professional and renowned Tele Communications expert as the State Secretary of Government of Akwa Ibom State, the expectations are that Akwa Ibom State will undoubtedly become the first address for ICT knowledge advancement, solutions, services and creative dimensions for the sustainable future.

The current landscape ICT advantage of Akwa-Ibom State was conceptualised in 2003. This established the State Information Technology (IT) and Science and Technology (S&T) Policies respectively. These sets of policy frameworks were aimed at: Creating knowledge and innovation clusters for strategic and sustainable development of the State. Retooling the workforce in readiness for e-Government programs designed to meet the basic and central needs of the State. Finetuning leadership and governance operations.

Discovering and enthroning new knowledge resources to serve core business–commercialisation activities. Reposition the State’s ICT brand to engage national and International entrepreneurial and innovation culture. Engaging knowledge workers and core Stakeholders to relocate to the State for the real mission of adding sustainable value State development and prosperity.

In the beginning, the central goals include but not limited to the following: Transform Akwa Ibom through ICT. Conceptualize the establishment of Akwa Ibom State’s ICT Policy and premier Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Park as the central Hub and strategic platform for transforming and accelerating the development and advancement of new Knowledge Resources to empower existing start-ups, small and medium scale businesses and industries.

Apply R&D to understand and master the secrets behind accelerated ICT, future applications and related Technology development curves in innovation, electronics, advanced materials business and e-Government development. Develop and built new Entrepreneurs and Techno-preneurs Culture.

While wishing Akwa Ibom State well in pursuance of her sustainable ICT mission, there is need to invigorate and apply design-thinking process to accelerate Youth employment through ICT knowledge empowerment and the commercialization of innovative State technologies. Above all, there is need to improve and protect the State’s Critical ICT Infrastructure, business incubation, knowledge coaching, skills development, strategic relationship networks and access to capital.

For the records, Dr. Emmanuel Ekuwem shared the vision with professional advice at the founding stage of the State’s IT Policy. Those who were in the line of fire for actualizing the establishment of the foundation of Akwa Ibom State’s ICT vision and mission at the critical stage include but now limited to the followings: Obong. Victor Attah– First and Former Executive Governor of Akwa Ibom State. Dr. Linus Asuqor First Commissioner for S &T, Chris Uwaje of Connect Technologies as Lead Consultant, Obong. Effangga, former PS of S&T. Prof. Ntuen (Department of Human Machine, North Carolina University, USA, Chief Ebitimi Banigo: Former Federal Minister for S&T, Prof. Akpan Ekpo , former VC of Uni Uyo, Yinka tanimowo, Gbenga Sesan as technical support and others too numerous to mention. Time for other States to learn ans share from Akwa Ibom’s ICT strategy and experience.

In Abuja: NAPTIP arrests herbalist for sale of babies

NAPTIP said in a statement on Sunday in Abuja, that Emmanuel is from Enugu State and the owner of Akuchi Herbal Concept, located at New Nyanya, Abuja.

The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking In Persons (NAPTIP) has arrested a 38 year old herbalist, Mr Chigozie Emmanuel, aka ‘Akuchi’, for selling new born babies in Abuja.

NAPTIP said in a statement on Sunday in Abuja, that Emmanuel is from Enugu State and the owner of Akuchi Herbal Concept, located at New Nyanya, Abuja.

It said he was arrested “after weeks of diligent surveillance by officers of the Agency and those of the Department of State services’’.

Emmanuel was allegedly “deceiving women into thinking they are pregnant and thereafter giving other people’s babies to them having collected lots of money’’.

“The arrest was based on a previous arrest by the Nigerian Police, of a woman whom they saw with a baby in Abuja enroute Minna, Niger State.

“Based on their suspicion, they detained and questioned the woman on the identity of the baby she carried. She admitted to being a patient of Emmanuel, whom she said administered some herbs to her after years of infertility.

“She thereafter appeared pregnant and was cautioned against going to the hospital for any medical treatment or ante-natal care.

“When it was time for her ‘delivery’, Mr. Emmanuel directed her to Port-Harcourt where a baby was handed over to her. She confessed to paying Mr. Emmanuel the sum of six hundred and fifty thousand naira (N650,000) for his services’’.

The statement added that Emmanuel, who was arrested at the weekend, “is helping in further investigations on sale of human beings and child trafficking’’.

Reacting to the arrest, the Director-General of NAPTIP, Dame Julie Okah-Donli commended the Officers for their painstaking surveillance which culminated in the arrest.

She further warned the public, especially women, to stop patronizing such ‘herbalists’, as the sale of babies is a crime punishable by law.

The NAPTIP boss advised couples who wish to adopt a child to go through the legal means of adoption.

According to her, some of the babies sold to these women were abducted from their biological parents.

She called for more information from the public about any such act or ‘maternity homes’ being run in their neighbourhood.

Jay Z added that he felt disappointed that the words came from the leader of the supposed free world.

Jay Z seems to have garnered Donald Trump's ire with a recent interview in which he tackled the US president's alleged racist comment.

Now Trump has come for the Grammy-award winning rapper on Sunday, January 28, via Twitter.

The controversial president was quick to point out that he has created more jobs for the black community than presidents before him.

He tweeted: “Somebody please inform Jay Z that because of my policies, Black Unemployment has just been reported to be at the LOWEST RATE EVER RECORDED!”

During the interview that aired on Saturday, January 27, on CNN, Jay Z said, “It is disappointing and it’s hurtful. It really is hurtful, more than so … everyone feels anger but after the anger, it’s real hurtful."

He added that he felt disappointed that the words came from the leader of the supposed free world.

“Everyone feels anger, but after the anger, it’s really hurtful because it’s looking down at a whole population of people and it’s so misinformed because these places have beautiful people and beautiful everything. This is the leader of the free world speaking like this."

The Hip Hop artist was referring to the comments Trump made early this month during a White House meeting with lawmakers about immigration.

The president asked why the United States continues to accept people from “s–thole countries,” referring to Africa, Haiti and El Salvador.

Although he denied using that phrase he acknowledged using tough language during the discussion.

NY Post reports that according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the unemployment rate for African-Americans was 6.8 percent in December, which is the lowest since 1972 when the federal agency began crunching the numbers by race.

The rate has reportedly been in decline since falling from 16.4 percent in August 2011 to 7.8 percent in January 2017.

Africa’s Growth Trajectory: We Waited Too Long to Act – AU Chair, Kagame

Addis Ababa – New chairperson of the African Union and President of Rwanda, Paul Kagame has decried the poor growth trajectory of Africa, saying leaders of the continent have failed to create a pathway to prosperity for the people.

He said over the years, leaders of the continent busied themselves studying how Asians got industrialized, forgetting that such system was no longer tenable for Africa. Kagame made the observations on Sunday, while taking over the baton of leadership of the AU from Alpha Conde, President of Guinea.

He said technology has evolved so fast that Africa’s window to follow that strategy is narrowing much more rapidly each day.

According to the AU chairperson, the continent was running out of time and efforts must be geared to save Africa from permanent deprivation.

“Africa’s defining challenge is to create a pathway to prosperity for our people, especially young people.

“Elsewhere, this has been achieved through industrialization but the growth trajectory that transformed Asia is not necessarily any longer a viable option for Africa, simply because we waited too long to act.

“Technology has evolved so rapidly in recent years, that Africa’s window to follow that strategy is narrowing much more rapidly than previously understood. We are running out of time and we must act now to save Africa from permanent deprivation,”Kagame told the delegates.

He said if Africa must take centre stage in upscaling its development process, it must create a single continental market, integrate infrastructures and infuse technology into national economies.

His words,” Scale is essential, we must create a single continental market, integrate our infrastructure and infuse our economies with technology.

“No country or region can manage on its own, we have to be functional and we have to stay together, the financial and institutional reform of the African Union derives all of its urgency from these realities.”

Meanwhile, newly elected President of Liberia, George Weah made his first public appearance at the summit, where he rallied support from member countries to make him succeed.

Weah noted that following his election at this auspicious time in Liberia, he was determined to improve the livelihood of Liberians and contribute his quota to the virtues of African Union.

PHCN Worker Electrocuted While Rectifying Electric Faults In Ondo

Akure – One Daisi Isaac Aregbesola, a staffer of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) was electrocuted at the weekend in Akure, Ondo State capital, while rectifying an electric faults.

Daisi, an electrical engineer and contract staffer of PHCN, was reportedly instructed by his boss to rectify the faults on an electric pole in front of Zenith Bank, Alagbaka.

It was learnt that passersby tried in vain to save the life of the deceased whose body was said to be dangling on the high tension cables for more than one hour.

A source said the PHCN worker received a shock from the high tension wire while performing his duty.

“I had barely walked pass the pole on which he was working when I heard a very loud noise and saw his body dangling on the pole. People around tried to bring him down.

“In fact, it took other PHCN workers almost an hour to arrive at the scene. It was after the man had died and his body already brought down from the pole by sympathizers,” he said.

Funke Adeniyi, widow of the deceased, said on phone that her husband was immediately rushed to the Ondo State Specialists Hospital, Akure, but confirmed dead by doctors on arrival.

She said: “A younger brother to my husband called me that he (Daisi) had an accident and I should meet them at the state hospital.

“I was confused and had to rushed down. But when I got to the hospital, I was told he had an electric shock on the high tension lines at the front of Zenith Bank and he died.

“Workers in his office told us that his boss sent him a message to work on the high tension cables due to some faults on the poles at the Alagbaka area in Akure.

“I asked them why they switched on the light (electricity) when they knew that my husband was working on the pole. So, I am smelling conspiracy.”

She said her late husband was employed by the company about four years ago.

Defection: If I Lose Upcoming Ekiti APC Primaries… – Segun Oni

Chief  Segun Oni, a former  governor of Ekiti and Deputy National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), said on Sunday that he was not planning to defect to another party.

Oni, who was reacting to an online report that he was planning to join a speculated coalition,  said there was no iota of truth in the publication.

The spokesman for Oni, Mr  Steve Alabi, in a statement in Ado-Ekiti quoted  his principal as describing  the report as the product of the  imagination of the writer.

The statement  read in part: ” Why would I decamp to any other political party, either existing or yet to be formed aside the APC.

”  I have said times without number, and I want to reiterate it, as far as Segun Oni is concerned, the reason why I’m contesting this election is because of my party.

“Therefore, if I’m not the candidate of my party, I will still work for my party, if  I lose the upcoming Ekiti APC primaries, I  will remain loyal to the party.

” Why will I leave the APC? I have been here; we conscientiously fought the PDP out of power, with everything we have got.

“Those peddling the rumours are either bystanders or those who don’t believe in the agenda of President Buhari and who are now trying to find ways of rubbishing people who believe in the president.

“I’m a member of the APC and by the grace of God, the Deputy National Chairman. I don’t know any other party. I don’t have a plan B. My plan A, B or C is APC because I’m not desperate.

“Why would I be desperate when I know that honour has no equivalent? So if anybody tells you I want to go to any other party, the question you should ask the person is whether I told him so or if I held any meeting with him where such matter was discussed.”

The statement added that it was incongruous that Oni, who just received a PDP chieftain, Sen.  Basheer Garba Mohammed,  into the APC fold in Kano over the weekend  could be defecting  himself.

“It is not the first time that rumour-mongers are spreading such fake stories of decamping about Oni.

” The other time, they said he was defecting to APGA. This time, it is a party that is yet to be birthed,” it said.

“After the failed APGA story, they want to come out again using Oni to gain prominence or sell their platform, but they have forgotten that the credentials of Chief Segun Oni could not be faulted.

“So, I will advise them to try another person, but, for Segun Oni, they are already a failure on arrival,” it added.

Lagos PDP Condemns Lekki-Epe Toll Increment

Lagos – The Lagos State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has condemned plans to increase the toll charged on the Lekki-Epe and Ikoyi link roads.

Lekki concession company (LCC) which company managing the road had in a statement released over the weekend said the new toll takes effect from February 1, 2018.

But the chairman of the Lagos PDP, Hon Moshood Salvador, in a statement expressed shock over the development.

According to him, the plan has once again brought to the fore the height of wickedness of the Lagos State government in connivance with LCC against hapless Lagosians.

“The reasons adduced for the planned increase, according to them include high operating cost and the current exchange rate of the naira to the dollar.

“This is rather laughable and a great indictment of the ruling APC at the federal level which has demonstrated inept leadership from economy to Fulani/farmers’ clashes and other critical issue.

“This is a company that generates hundreds of millions daily from tolling and nobody has an idea of what goes into its coffers.

“It is no doubt acting in league with the state government which year in year out budgets billions of naira for projects without making the details available,” he said.

Continuing, Salvador stressed that it was rather strange that the new tolls planned to take effect less than one week after the announcement.

According to him, this was rather suspicious because the rush leaves much to be desired.

He added “curiously, details of the planned increase still remains speculative in spite of the rush to force the new tolls on Lagosians.

“Is this part of the so-called change which was used to hoodwink Nigerians to vote for them?

“We want to ask Governor Ambode who was until recently a civil servant whether this is justifiable against the backdrop of the state of the economy.

“It is even worrisome in view of the fact that Ambode had at the 2018 budget presentation last year promised to raise additional revenue which may overburden Lagosians.

“As we speak, plans are afoot to increase land use charge in the state, which may lead to rent increase.”

According to him, this is at a time when millions are out of jobs and salaries have remained static.

Consequently, he said the Lagos PDP was totally opposed to the planned increase as a part dedicated to the welfare of the people.

Meanwhile, Salvador has expressed confidence that the Lagos PDP is gradually regaining lost grounds in the build-up to 2019.

He said the recent inauguration of the executive members at the local levels which was witnessed by a mammoth crowd at the state secretariat of the party was a sign of good things to come.
