Finance: We spoke to Wall Street's top young headhunters — here are their best pieces of advice for job candidates

Wall Street traders

Business Insider recently compiled a list of Wall Street's top young headhunters. We asked many of them the same question: What do you look for in candidates?

  • Business Insider recently compiled a list of the top headhunters on Wall Street age 40 and under, and we asked many of them what they like to see from job candidates.
  • We got a slew of useful tips for landing coveted positions on Wall Street.
  • Transparency is crucial, one said: "Kids just not being honest with me or other recruiters — that, to me, is huge."

Business Insider recently compiled a list of the top headhunters on Wall Street age 40 and under, and in the process we asked many of them the same question: What do you look for in candidates?

One recruiter said that a great strategy when going into banking is to specialize in an area that isn't completely saturated.

Banks are massive and can be intimidating — and not all sectors are as valued as others. If you're at an investment bank that is already overrun with talented associates and vice presidents covering technology, consider a different industry or even middle-market transactions.

"Do your best to find an area or sector that is both underpenetrated and niche-y, but it also needs to be valued by the bank," one headhunter told us. "Find a sector to cover that has upward running room."

Here's what others had to say about how to land coveted Wall Street positions:

  • Be agile, and don't shy away from strenuous projects: "People are looking for individuals who are more agile and flexible than they ever have before," a recruiter told us. "I’m very attracted to candidates who have been through significant difficulties."
  • Demonstrate investing prowess — even if that's just having smart analysis and opinions of the deals that senior bankers are actually running: "I look for those that are already thinking like an investor and have opinions and their own point of view on the deals they’ve worked on."
  • Transparency is crucial in developing a healthy relationship with a recruiter: "Kids just not being honest with me or other recruiters — that, to me, is huge," one headhunter said. "As long as your open with me that’ll be good in my book."
  • If you want to rise to the top, don't move around too much: "Someone who jumps around today, that doesn’t read very well for a senior level," they said. "However, the healthy thing is to figure out what it is you want to apply yourself to and drive after that."

World Cancer Day: NGO urges awareness campaign in rural areas

Malam Nurudeen Bello, an official, said at an awareness lecture noted that poor advocacy had left victims of cancer to die unattended to in rural areas.

Ahead of the World Cancer Day (WCD) on Feb. 4, Women Hood Foundation, an NGO on Saturday in Kaduna called on stakeholders to channel cancer awareness campaigns to the rural areas.

Malam Nurudeen Bello, an official, said at an awareness lecture noted that poor advocacy had left victims of cancer to die unattended to in rural areas.

All individuals should be encouraged to play certain roles towards reducing the burden of cancer.

“This event gives us the opportunities to reflect on what we can do, making a pledge and taking action.

Bello said that cancer is the second leading cause of death globally, with lung, prostate, stomach and liver cancer being the most common types in men.

Breast, lung, cervix and stomach cancer are the most common among women.

“In Africa, most of the affected patients are the rural dwellers, who are mostly women. Hence, the need to take the campaigns to rural areas,” he said.

He expressed dismay over the poor advocacy on cancer in Nigeria, especially in the rural areas, where the perception is that, a victim of cancer is always on a death row.

According to Bello, reports indicate that, between 30 per cent and 50 per cent of cancer deaths could be prevented by modifying or avoiding key risk factors.

These factors include avoiding tobacco products, reducing alcohol consumption, maintaining a healthy body weight, exercising regularly and addressing infection-related risk factors.

The founder of Foundation for the Protection of Women and Children, Comrade Ramatu Tijjani called on all stakeholders to actively create awareness on cancer in rural communities to reduce the burden.

The 2018 theme for the WCD is: “We can, I can.”

6 Africans shot in Italy, anti-migrant ex-candidate arrested

13-year-old girl raped by 8 men pregnant with twins

A 13-year-old girl allegedly raped by eight men including an Imam, is said to be five months pregnant with twins in Kubau Local Government, Kaduna State.

Head of Arridah Foundation, Hajiya Rabi Salisu told newsmen on Saturday in Kaduna that the case was brought to the organisation to assist the girl in getting justice.

She said that the foundation would mobilise support and follow up the case in court “until justice is done.’’

Newsmen learnt that the Imam is a neighbour of the girl’s parents.

Rabi said: “We have received the case, and I must say in our years of advocacy during which we have treated over 400 cases of rape and child abuses, we have never come across this type of inhumanity.

“It is devastating to see eight men raping a 13-year-old. She is pregnant, she hasn’t even developed breasts at all and her parents are threatening to abort the twins to avert public embarrassment.

“The fact that the rapists are eight in number might even expose her to HIV/AID or sexually transmitted diseases and other dangerous infection as a result of forced sex.

“We need justice for this girl and that is why we need the support of Kaduna state government, all human right organizations and religious leaders to quickly intervene and bring succour to the poor child that is facing daily challenges.”

The father of the girl, Mu’azu Shittu, said he had already taken the case to Upper Sharia Court in Ikara.

According to him, he had contemplated abortion but was advised against it.

“She is too young to be carrying twins and there is no single one among the rapists that is ready to take responsibility for the pregnancy,’’ he lamented.

The girl said the men usually give her N500 and warned her not to tell anybody.

“They usually call and give me N500 when I came back from school and went out hawking; they forced me into it.

“And they have been warning me not to tell my parents, they promise to kill me if I dare tell my parents, that is why I refused to tell my parents, I was so afraid.’’

Community leaders vow to resist attempt to change councillorship nominee

By Perez Brisibe

LEADERS from Tuomo community, Burutu local government area of Delta State have vowed that they would resist any attempt to change the name of their nominee for the position of supervisory councilor for Burutu council.

The leaders made up of a former majority leader of Bendel State House of Assembly, Prince Okpabeni Johnny, chairman of the community, Ozidi Seaman and the traditional ruler of the community, HRH S. Emopko made the charge while briefing newsmen at the end of an emergence meeting at Warri.

They alleged that a former minister was putting pressure on the state governor and party chairman to change the name of their candidate whose name has already been sent to the Burutu legislative House.

In a communiqué signed by Johnny and Seaman at the end of the meeting, they threatened that any attempt to bring an unpopular person for the position of supervisory council, would spell doom for the PDP in the area.

They said: “Our nominee is accepted by the people and the state governor, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa needs to balance all sides for the political growth of Tuomo community, we also want to use this opportunity to pledge our support and loyalty to the state governor.”

Assuring the people that the governor would look into their plight, cofounder of PANDEF, Chief Mike Loyibo urged them to be calm saying, “am sure the governor who has a mind of the people, would not do anything that would undermine the wish of the people.”

Finance: MACQUARIE: Here's how to protect against 'grotesquely swollen financial markets' that will go haywire this year

null

BI PRIME: Cross-asset measures of volatility have been at low levels for months, but that's about to change, and investors can capitalize, says Macquarie.

  • Cross-asset measures of volatility have been at historically low levels for months.
  • The role of global central banks has been shifted in recent months as they've become mostly concerned with keeping this volatility subdued, says Macquarie.
  • Eventually, price swings will rock the market, and investors would be well-served to buy volatility in preparation for that.

Traders, strategists, and market experts at large have for months lamented the lack of price swings in global markets.

Volatility across all asset classes has been subdued for most of the past year, and it's created what many view as an unsustainable situation marked by investor greed and complacency.

That's essentially shifted the role of global governing bodies into bystander mode, according to Viktor Shvets, Macquarie's head of global equity strategy, who doesn't mince words when addressing the issue.

"Central banks and financial supervisory bodies have essentially morphed from masters of the universe into slaves of grotesquely swollen financial markets," he wrote in a recent client note. "In this surreal world of complete dominance of financial assets, conventional economic rules break down and financialization and avoidance of sharp asset price contractions becomes the paramount policy objective."

This chart showcases just how placid financial markets have become. This combination of factors is untenable to Shvets, who forecasts a massive uptick in volatility — one he sees many investors as ill-prepared to handle.

At the core of Shvets view — and also a key part of why he anticipates an eventual volatility storm — is the idea that central banks are now beholden to markets, rather than the other way around. He notes a "well-imbedded investor belief that central banks would not allow volatilities to destroy their carefully constructed façade."

"It is this investor confidence in the inability and unwillingness of central banks to tolerate volatility of asset prices that explains why financial conditions globally and in the US continue to ease, even as central banks have become increasingly hawkish," said Shvets.

Volatility will soon be beckoning, however, as these same central banks grow increasingly frustrated that their usual policy transmission channels are blocked, he argues. Shvets sees them continuing to raise the cost of capital, which could in turn result in a potentially harmful over-tightening by China.

"This can easily lead to a sudden jump in volatilities," he said. "No matter what happens, volatility is likely to materially jump at some point in 2018."

So what's an investor to do, assume they can shake off creeping complacency? Shvets recommends buying exposure to volatility, something that's easy to do through means exchange-traded products tracking the Cboe Volatility Index — or VIX.

It might seem like a counterintuitive trade, considering the VIX has been locked near record low levels for much of the past year. But it's the right call in the face of an impending spike in price swings, according to Shvets.

There's a "possibility of potentially very strong dislocation," he said. "Buying volatility and protection could yield significant returns."

World: A chronicle of Syrian torture, image by image

null

But now, after he has survived two stretches in the Syrian government’s notorious detention centers, his sharp memories only serve to haunt him.

As an accomplished artist in Syria before the war, Bukai had long thought his photographic memory was his greatest asset, allowing him to recreate scenes on his sketch pads and canvases days, months and even years after he witnessed them.

But now, after he has survived two stretches in the Syrian government’s notorious detention centers, his sharp memories only serve to haunt him.

One day recently, home with his family in Fontenay-le-Comte, a sleepy city in the Loire valley, he methodically opened boxes containing dozens of drawings he has made of the images burned into his brain.

It is the only way he knows of coping with the traumas he witnessed, and suffered, in Syria’s torture chambers.

In one, men wearing only their underwear carry a corpse in what looks like a sheet or blanket, for eventual disposal, Bukai says, in the back of a truck in a pile of other bodies. He recalls a number, 5535, on the young man’s chest.

They had been ordered to strip to their underwear, Bukai explained, so they could be easily spotted if they tried to escape.

“Art saved me,” he said, while laying the drawings out on a tabletop.

His art reminds many critics of the work of Slovenian artist and Holocaust survivor Zoran Music — haunting, dark and extremely realistic.

In his drawings, some prisoners hang by their hands and others undergo other forms of torture, all while their cellmates eat their meals calmly, desensitized to the displays of inhumanity around them.

I was observing everything and making art in my head,” he said about his time in a crammed cell, where prisoners had to take off their clothes because of the unbearable heat.

He still remembers the smell of rotten flesh, the screams of other prisoners and how, horrifically, he and others grew accustomed to it all.

Today, Bukai (pronounced boo-Kay) travels across France to raise awareness about the horrors of the detention centers, while the French publishing house Éditions du Seuil is preparing to publish a book of his drawings.

His experiences during Syria’s civil war were not all that different from those of tens of thousands of other young men who took to the streets demanding democracy and human rights — except, perhaps, in that he survived.

He was arrested three times for his participation in the protests. He was incarcerated in 2012 for a month and for 11 months in 2014.

According to rights groups, the government of President Bashar Assad has tortured tens of thousands of political opponents, many of whom have never been seen by their families again. No one knows exactly how many disappeared.

“I have not seen anything like the methods of torture that the Syrian security services have used in any other country,” said Sara Kayyali, a researcher with Human Rights Watch.

Bukai, 47, was lucky to come out of Assad’s prisons alive, but more than 40 members of his family died in 2012 in a bombing of their neighborhood in Judaydat Artuz, a Damascus suburb. That he managed to survive and, eventually, escape from Syria was a tribute to the determination of his wife, Abir Jassoumeh.

Both times he was arrested she searched until she found him, 10 days the first time, 20 days the second. She then bribed officials to win his freedom — more than $20,000, or around 10 times her annual income, raised with the help of siblings living abroad.

They chose to settle in this small French city because one of his brothers, a doctor, was living here. Bukai already had a connection to France — he enrolled in a bachelor’s program in Rouen in the 1990s, after studying drawing in the Syrian city of Homs and fine arts in Damascus.

He had a comfortable if unremarkable upbringing, at least until the Arab Spring. His father, who worked in an oil refinery in Homs, was secular and not politically engaged.

But many of his relatives opposed the country’s autocratic rulers, Hafez Assad and the current president, Bashar Assad, and were among the first to join the peaceful protests that broke out in 2011. In the first protest in Judaydat Artuz, 15 of the 25 participants were members of the Bukai family.

Bukai firmly believed that freedom and democratic values would prevail. He filmed videos of the protests and posted them on the internet. He thought the government’s days were numbered.

When we saw that international forces took down Gadhafi, we thought ‘This is our chance to make the Assads fall,'” he said, referring to the NATO bombing of Libya in 2011 and the Libyan leader, Moammar Gadhafi.

They expected a similarly rapid end for Assad: “We never thought he would butcher Syrians without anyone budging. We knew that maybe a few hundred would die, but it was a small cost for our freedom.”

So Bukai stayed in Syria even though he knew he risked arrest. Police had searched and burned his mother’s house in 2012. Still, he lived with the family until police caught up with him.

“I was always scared,” Jassoumeh said. “But even when I asked him to stop, he wouldn’t.”

His first arrest came in July 2012 as he was commuting to work at the International University for Science and Technology in Damascus, where he was teaching art.

He made the mistake of staying on his bus as it went through one of the many checkpoints that appeared in Damascus as the civil war was heating up.

The guards found his name of a list of wanted people. They made him get off the bus, called him a traitor, handcuffed him, blindfolded him with his own shirt and took him to a detention center.

There he was beaten so badly that he suffered multiple broken bones and temporary hearing loss. His wrists still bear scars from that day, and he says he still hears the screams of the other prisoners.

Jassoumeh paid about $1,000 to get him out of jail, but the charges remained. He then spent two years in hiding. In 2014, he and his family decided to make their escape from Syria.

They bribed someone to have his name omitted from a watch list at the border, then dressed as Christians, wearing crosses. But they had been betrayed: Bukai’s name was still on the list. He was arrested and taken back to the same detention center — facility number 227.

By this time, the abuses had reached new levels of depravity, and the prisoners were forced to watch and participate in the torture. Once again, Jassoumeh paid a bribe, this time $6,000, to have her husband transferred after 70 days to a jail where he was not tortured and was allowed family visits.

I am lucky. I love life. I am attached to life,” Bukai said about how he got through the ordeal. “I had a big hope of getting out and of seeing my wife and my daughter again.”

His wife traveled every week to see him, crossing war zones 38 times to give him the courage, he says, to stay alive.

After she paid a final bribe, he was released from jail, and in October 2015, certain that his name had been removed from the wanted list, they left Syria for good, carrying the few drawings he had done in the jail and musical instruments to attract the custom officers’ attention away from the art.

When they made it to Lebanon, they immediately requested asylum at the French Embassy in Beirut.

Today, they are slowly trying to build a life abroad. But they still hope to return to Syria one day after the toppling of the Assad government. Until then, Bukai will keep sketching.

“It is a personal therapy that allows me to evacuate,” he said about his work. “The whole time I was in hell, I tried to not see nightmares. Instead, I forced myself to see beautiful dreams.”

In Ondo: NSCDC nabs 4 suspects, destroys 200,000 litres of petroleum products

Mr Pedro Awili, NSCDC state commandant, who said this in a statement issued by Mrs Ajoke Pelemo (ASC I), command Public Relations Officer on Saturday in Akure, said the command also confiscated 2,710 litres of the product.

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Ondo State Command says it has arrested four suspects, destroyed 200,000 litres of diesel in the state.

Mr Pedro Awili, NSCDC state commandant, who said this in a statement issued by Mrs Ajoke Pelemo (ASC I), command Public Relations Officer on Saturday in Akure, said the command also confiscated 2,710 litres of the product.

According to Awili, the suspects are Akin Akinyele, 42, Alao Yusuf, 40; Aremu Saidi, 35 and Hassan Jimoh, 37.

Awili said the suspects were arrested on January 31, for illegal dealing in diesel  along Lagos express way, Ajibandele in Odigbo Local Government Area of the state.

He said that the raid was carried out by anti-vandal operatives of the state command in Ajibandele area where it was discovered that a lot of shops along the road were being run by illegal marketers.

He said that the suspects were still under investigation and would be charged to court immediately after the investigation.

NSCDC boss explained that illegal marketers were financiers and sponsors to those who break the right of way of either NNPC or SPDC to siphon crude oil and locally refine them in the creeks within the state.

According to him, illegal dealings in petroleum products is at the detriment of the public because it damages machinery and cause a lot of problems in the society due to the inflammable nature of the adulterated products.

Awili, therefore, implored the good citizens of the state to be security conscious and also report to the security agencies any illegal dealings in petroleum products.

He assured the general public that the corps would put more effort in bringing an end to illegal oil marketing in the state.

The commandant also warned individuals to desist from dealing in Illegal Petroleum products or face the wrath of the law.

The spokesman said that the suspects were nabbed after the police followed a clue gathered through intelligence report.

According to him, the three suspects are now helping the police in their investigations in connection with the alleged crime committed.

It was gathered that suspects allegedly, on Nov. 1, 2017, snatched and stole a Toyota Sienna car with registration Number LND 388 AS at gun point from the owner at Nnaji Park axis of New Haven in Enugu.

“The suspects escaped to an unknown destination but never knew that police operatives had been on their trail,’’ he said.

Problems with my nails

I am a girl of 18 years. I recently noticed that my fingernails are turning brown and the nails on my toes are cutting into two. Kindly let me know the cause of these and what I should do about it.

Blessing (by SMS)

The most common causes of yellow or brown fingernails are the frequent use of nail polish and cigarette smoking. Taking a break on the polish or quitting smoking may allow the dark nail to grow out as the new nail comes in.

A yellowish colouring of the nails may also be caused by diabetes, lung problems, arthritis, lupus, certain medications, lymphatic system disorders and liver disease. Not having enough vitamin B-12 can cause nails to turn dark, thin and possibly spoon-shaped. Your doctor may want to perform some tests to check for nutrition problems or an illness.

Fungus infections of the fingernails can also turn the nails brown or yellow. The texture usually also changes; nails often become very thick and may crack or peel. Nail fungus infections are more common in the toes than the fingers.  These infections can be difficult to treat, and taking an oral antifungal medication is usually required. However, if things do not improve, you may need to see your doctor for a more expert advice and treatment

Ijeoma (by SMS)

It is not all cases of Sore Throat that require antibiotics treatment since some sore throats are caused by viral infections. Having been on antibiotics treatment for a while without any improvement, it will be a good idea for you stop your current medications and see a doctor. Apart from inspecting your throat to specifically see whether your tonsils are enlarged or not, the doctor may also take a swap of your throat for Laboratory examination. The outcome of the examination will determine your ultimate treatment.

Tech: Apple's making more money off the iPhone — even as it sold fewer of them (AAPL)

null

The iPhone X helped boost the average price consumers paid for Apple's smartphones — leading to a revenue surge.

Apple sold fewer iPhones in the holiday quarter than it did a year earlier, a fact that in the past would have spooked investors and worried the company's fans. But not this time around. That's because even though it sold fewer phones, it made a lot more money off them.

Boosted by sales of the company's new flagship, the iPhone X, which starts at $1,000, the average price consumers paid for Apple's smartphones jumped through the roof in the period. As seen in this chart from Statista, which is based on Apple's data, the average price consumers are paying for iPhones has been on a steady incline — as has Apple's smartphone revenue.
