World: At demanding workplace, aide is singled out as 'absolutely fantastic'

As Other Aides Face Trump's Ire Over Rob Porter's Departure, Hope Hicks Is Praised

WASHINGTON — In a White House populated by aides who have flamed out, lashed out or cashed out — some do all three in the same day — Hope Hicks, the administration’s communications director, has maintained a low profile as an influential adviser of a mercurial president who prizes her loyalty.

On Friday, President Donald Trump publicly returned the favor. A day after the departure of Rob Porter, a White House aide who resigned amid domestic abuse accusations, the president dismissed an idea circulated by some aides and allies that he had been unhappy with Hicks’ role in workshopping an initial forceful defense of Porter.

Hicks had been dating Porter until recently.

“Hope is absolutely fantastic,” Trump said in a statement released through a spokesman. “She was with the campaign from the beginning, and I could not ask for anything more. Hope is smart, very talented and respected by all.”

Hicks did not know about the specific allegations made against Porter until Tuesday, according to a White House official. That day, she met with other White House officials in drafting the initial statements sent in Porter’s defense, according to two West Wing officials.

Rumblings began about the president’s unhappiness with a haphazard situation handled without his knowledge, and Trump spent Thursday working the phones, referring to Porter in one call as “bad garbage” and saying that he questioned Hicks’ judgment, according to two advisers.

But while questions continue to swirl about whether Kelly will survive the scandal — he offered to resign Friday — in Hicks’ case the West Wing trotted out a host of senior officials to defend her. On Friday the lineup included Ivanka Trump, the president’s daughter and senior adviser, and Steven Mnuchin, the Treasury secretary.

“I have been impressed with Hope since I started working with her on the campaign,” Mnuchin said in a statement that was volunteered by an aide. “She is exceptionally talented in leading communications for the administration. I view her as an invaluable asset to the president and us all.”

Ivanka Trump, who hired Hicks several years ago to work for her company before Hicks was tapped to serve on the Trump campaign in 2015, said Hicks was a “team player” who’d earned the president’s confidence.

“Most importantly,” Trump said in an unsolicited interview, “the president has deep respect for her, cares about her greatly, and listens to her. That’s not true of everyone. She’s earned that.”

Hicks, a 29-year-old former model, brought an aggressive, corporate-world training to the world of politics. With a background in defending the client against all threats — and, if necessary, all odds — she earned Donald Trump’s trust during the campaign.

The bond grew as Trump ascended to the White House and was suddenly surrounded by a sea of unfamiliar faces. Hicks has been a constant at his side on trips and photo opportunities, and keeps as close an eye as possible on Trump’s interviews with journalists.

In their years together, Hicks has helped write pugilistic statements on Trump’s behalf, including one that delivered a blow to Stephen Bannon, the president’s former chief strategist: “Steve pretends to be at war with the media, which he calls the opposition party, yet he spent his time at the White House leaking false information to the media to make himself seem far more important than he was,” that statement read.

During the campaign, Hicks also stepped forward to defend Corey Lewandowski, Trump’s onetime campaign manager. She said Lewandowski had “nothing to apologize for” after he grabbed a reporter who later filed battery charges against him.

“I think the president always likes somebody who looks like they’re out of central casting,” Chris Ruddy, chief executive of Newsmax Media and a friend of the president, said in an interview. “But he does want people to know what they’re doing. He also puts a high value on loyalty. And she’s been extremely loyal.”

For the last several months, Hicks and Porter have been seen around Washington, attending group dinners together. One person close to Hicks, who spoke on the condition of anonymity out of loyalty to her, said Porter had made his way into the small circle of people she felt she could trust after several years in an often chaotic work environment.

On Friday aides throughout the West Wing were still struggling to reconcile Porter’s accused private behavior with the person they knew at work, according to a senior administration official.

But in the Oval Office, Hicks was there as Trump offered praise and support for Porter.

“We absolutely wish him well,” the president said, as Hicks stood nearby.

Entertainment: Sonia Gechtoff, acclaimed abstract expressionist, dies at 91

Sonia Gechtoff, acclaimed abstract expressionist.

NEW YORK — Sonia Gechtoff, a prominent abstract expressionist on the West Coast early in her career and later a mainstay of the New York art scene, died Feb. 1 at a hospice center in the Bronx. She was 91.

Her daughter, Susannah Kelly, confirmed the death. Gechtoff made a quick and substantial impression in San Francisco, where she had arrived in 1951, a time when the Bay Area art scene was bubbling.

An early oil, “Self Portrait,” made in 1954 when she was still in her 20s, is now in the collection of the Smithsonian Institution. That same year she was represented in a group show of young painters at the Guggenheim Museum in Manhattan.

She was also becoming well known in the California art world, with solo exhibitions at outlets like the de Young Museum in San Francisco and the Ferus Gallery in Los Angeles, both in 1957.

But in 1958 she and her husband, artist James Kelly, whom she had married in 1953, decamped for New York. Though she was identified with the abstract expressionist genre her whole life — her early work has been the focus of a rediscovery recently — she experimented with styles and materials throughout her career.

In 1976, when Hilton Kramer of The New York Times called her “one of the most gifted artists of her generation,” he was reviewing a show of her pencil drawings.

Sonia Alice Gechtoff was born on Sept. 25, 1926, in Philadelphia, into a family with art in its genes. Her father, Leonid, was a painter, and her mother, Etya, was a gallery owner and manager.

Gechtoff received a bachelor of fine arts degree from the Philadelphia Museum School of Art (now the University of the Arts) in 1950. After moving to San Francisco, she largely abandoned figurative work in favor of the abstract.

It was a time of envelope pushing among artists, which included experimenting with ways to apply paint other than with a brush. (Jackson Pollock’s drip-painting period began in the mid-1940s.) Gechtoff started working with the palette knife.

“The palette knife has been used for ages to mix and move paint, but until Sonia’s generation, the brush ruled as far as the mechanism to apply paint to canvas,” Marshall N. Price, the Nancy Hanks curator of modern and contemporary art at Duke University’s Nasher Museum of Art, wrote in an email. “Sonia refined her palette knife technique, and by the late 1950s the slashing marks, often applied in a vortexlike way, were a hallmark of her work.”

Reviewing Gechtoff’s first New York exhibition after her move east, a 1959 show at the Poindexter Gallery, critic Dore Ashton wrote in The Times that the technique had produced “a surface similar to the overlapping feathers of a wet bird.”

However it was described, it made Gechtoff stand out in a genre that was largely male. A 1961 article in The Times about a brewing boycott by artists, in response to fire-code restrictions that threatened their lofts, said that “some big box-office names” had pledged to support the strike. It then listed 21 of those names, among them Robert Motherwell, Jasper Johns and Willem de Kooning. Gechtoff was the only woman on the list.

Kelly said that having two artists as parents made for a “home environment filled with creativity” for her and her brother, Miles, a musician who also survives their mother. Artists and other friends of their parents were always stopping by to talk art, politics, film and more.

“She was not an average mother in that we as her children learned to curse from her and to never hold back on our opinion,” Kelly said by email. “I remember her cursing at the TV whenever Lyndon Johnson was on talking about the Vietnam War. I remember Mom going to Washington to protest the war.”

Gechtoff was still displaying that spiritedness late in life. A 2011 article about her in Art in America magazine began, “Tough, straight-talking abstract painter Sonia Gechtoff is currently being rescued from ill-deserved obscurity.”

The “ill-deserved obscurity” had come gradually. Gechtoff continued to produce new work throughout her life, and to experiment. In a 1983 exhibition at the Gruenebaum Gallery, Michael Brenson wrote in The Times, she veered from abstraction and “put her mastery of color and composition in the service of identifiable subjects,” including the Brooklyn Bridge and the temples at Paestum in Italy.

“She finds the angles and scale that reveal the grandeur of the ancient stone and modern steel,” Brenson wrote. “And she illuminates her blocks of color with her own muted yet intense light.”

Her name, though, became less and less familiar as the art world moved on — until recently, when abstract expressionism and female artists both began to be rediscovered.

She was among 18 artists featured in “Bella Pacifica: Bay Area Abstraction 1946-1963, a Symphony in Four Parts,” a 2011 exhibition at four galleries in New York. She was one of 12 in “Women of Abstract Expressionism,” an exhibition organized by the Denver Art Museum in 2016 that later toured.

Kelly, her husband, died in 2003. Her children are her only immediate survivors. Gechtoff had lived in Greenwich Village.

In the 2011 interview with Art in America, Gechtoff talked about the female forms in her abstract work from the 1950s, playing down the idea that they were a feminist statement.

I wasn’t the least bit interested in feminist art, and I still am not,” she said. “We were feminist before the feminists came along.

NIOB tasks FG on definite policy to engage local professionals, contractors

THE Nigerian Institute of Building (NIOB) has urged the Federal Government to evolve a definite policy to engage local professionals and indigenous contractors for involvement in the capacity development of industry practitioners.

The NIOB President, Mr Kenneth Nduka, at his investiture as the 20th President of the institute said in Abuja on Saturday that it became imperative because of the ever-changing socio-economic and technological environment.

Nduka appealed to the Federal Government to show greater faith in exploring how best to add good value to societal expectations for policy making undertakings to be advantageously harvested.

“The professional institutions like the NIOB have to be rightly situated as lighthouses guiding the members, the industry and general public from bad practice, corruption, indiscipline and bad governance,’’ he said.

In order to improve operational governance, he pledged that the management and administration would be subjected to periodic audit scrutiny to sustain administrative effectiveness.

He also frowned at the lack of political will on the part of all levels of government to effectively situate and enforce a statutory provision that would professionally drive activities in the built environment sector.

He said lack of political will had exposed the built environment and the industry to confused operational rhythms, wasteful resources deployment, and dysfunctional delivery outcomes.

“This has compromised environmental health and safety, caused proliferation of sick buildings, resultant indulgence to high maintenance cost, prevailing sickening culture of building collapses and pathetic loss of lives and values.

“NIOB is one of the seven professionals uniquely charged with the responsibility of training and re-training of registered potential builders who will deliver infrastructure for safe, healthy, sustainable, environmentally friendly, cost-effective and collapse-free buildings,’’ he said.

As a major stakeholder in the built environment sector, the NIOB president noted that the body owed both Nigeria and Nigerians a lot in building products with the application of technology and prevailing global practice.

He listed other challenges of the building industry as spiralling population explosion, galloping inflation, uncoordinated rural to urban migrations, inadequate provision of housing and infrastructural facilities and a dearth of artisans and craftsmen.

The expert said others were ever-evolving technological challenges, invasion of the sector by quacks and charlatans, interloping built environment professionals, corruption at all levels, undue politicisation and manipulative interventions on professional roles.

He called for a more standardised approach to ethics and public interest and more pooling of resources amongst all the segments of public and private governance and policy structures.

Akin Akindoyeni, a Professor of Building, called for a proper regulation of the sector due to the urgent rise of corruption, lack of prosecution of defaulters and empowerment of statutory laws.

ALSO READ: NIOB links building collapse to unrealistic projected time frames

“NIOB and the Council of Registered Builders of Nigerian (CORBON) have made several efforts to eradicate the canker-worm called quackery in the system but it is always a flop because of lack of government support.’’

The professional, however, condemned quackery in the system and warned those indulging in the acts who were not in any way registered builders to desist from it.

Kenny Blaq Signed As Tromville’s Brand Ambassador

Lagos – On Wednesday, February 7, 2018, Tromville Investment Limited signed on award-winning comedian, Kenny Blaq as its Brand Ambassador. The signing took place at Tromville Investment’s Opebi, Lagos office.

A popular quote says “there is little success where there is little laughter.” That is perhaps what inspired the management of Tromville, a top real estate agency to sign on comedian, Kenny Blaq as the pioneer brand ambassador for the organisation.

Otolorin Kehinde Peter, also known as Kenny Blaq who has bagged several awards including Upcoming Comedian of the Year at the 2015 Naija FM Comedy Awards; the Best Comedy Act, Nigeria in the 2016 MEAMA Awards in Egypt and comedian of the year, was made the new face of the company amidst excited applause.

Present at the signing were the Managing Director, Tromville, Adeyemi Adeniyi; Kenny Blaq; Taiwo Otolorin, his twin brother; Oluwaseun Ayanbowale, Director Operations, Tromville; Ayo Martins, Brand and Social Media Manager, Tromville; Tolu Olokun, among other members of staff of Tromville.

In a chat with the MD, Adeyemi, he explained that, “we are quite excited with the addition of Kenny Blaq to the family, and we are sure that this new addition is a precursor to greater success.”

Speaking at the signing, the hilarious Kenny Blaq stated among other things that one of the reasons he took the opportunity and joined with the Tromville family was because he has decided to say goodbye to being a tenant this year and this was one of the surest ways to ensure that happens.

The Brand Manager of Tromville, Martins, explained the reason for bringing in an ambassador and why Kenny Blaq was their choice. “We decided to go with Kenny Blaq because we believe that he has the youths at heart and he cuts across a whole lot of people. Our goals as an organisation are presently in line with the things that are paramount to today’s youth. These are people within the age range of 21 to 45. We believe that we can leverage on Blaq and his clientele base to get our product across to them.

“He is our pioneer ambassador and being the new face of Tromville, we believe that it is a partnership that would bring great things. When you look at our values as an organisation, the first thing you will see is ‘God first’, and I was so happy when he said the same thing at the signing.” he explained

Going further, he shared that “we have been on this for a while and we are excited to finally have him on board because we realised that he places God first in everything he does, and that is one of our greatest values.”

The company, with a vision to being the leading real estate company that provides affordable properties to meet the needs of customers in different segments of the economy by year 2019 has over the years provided affordable real estate services to its clientele, and this latest addition to their ranks is evidently a step in the right direction and a promise of the organisation’s dedication to the progression of the nation.
