Finance: Dow plunges after Trump says tariffs are coming next week

Dow

President Trump announced Thursday he would place new taxes on imported steel and aluminium.

The Dow Jones industrial average plunged to session lows Thursday afternoon following an announcement by President Donald Trump that he would place new taxes on imported steel and aluminum. The Dow is now down 356 points, or 1.42%.

US Steel rose more than 9% on the news that foreign steel would be subject to a 25% import tax. Aluminum will be taxed at a 10% rate.

"Our Steel and Aluminum industries (and many others) have been decimated by decades of unfair trade and bad policy with countries from around the world,” Trump tweeted Thursday morning. “We must not let our country, companies and workers be taken advantage of any longer. We want free, fair and SMART TRADE!"

Losses were widespread with United Technologies (-2.18%), Boeing (-1.62%), Pfizer (-1.4%), and Walmart (-1.3%) posting the biggest declines on the Dow.

Oil also continued its slide from earlier in the week, down just over 1% to $60.91 a barrel.

The S&P 500 was down 1.1% and the Nasdaq 100 were down 1.34% at the time of writing.

Tech: Trump supporters can't stand the idea of a smelly armpit or a stinky foot, a study found — and psychologists are not surprised

Grossed out?

Conservatives who favor Trump are more easily disgusted by the smells of body odor and farts. Sounds weird, but it's backed up by decades of study.

  • Scientists surveyed Trump and Clinton supporters a month before the 2016 election, and found differences in how the two groups reacted to body odors.
  • Socially conservative voters were more sensitive when presented with the idea of a stinky fart or smelly armpit.
  • It's a finding that aligns with years of study on psychological differences between people who hold socially conservative and liberal views.

Does the idea of a smelling someone's stinky feet gross you out? How about accidentally sniffing a stranger's fart, or standing next to someone wearing a sweaty t-shirt?

Turns out, supporters of President Donald Trump are especially grossed out by these ideas.

That's according to a new study released Wednesday from scientists at Stockholm University in Sweden.

The psychologists surveyed 391 American adults online in October 2016, a month before the presidential election. The participants represented a mix of personalities and demographics: 172 were men and 219 women, 36% supported Trump over Clinton (a number that tracked closely with national polling at the time), and roughly half of the group were college grads.

Time and again, the researchers found that when they asked questions like whether a participant would be grossed out by a neighbor's stinky feet, farts, urine, feces, or armpit smells, Trump supporters were predictably more sensitive to the idea of foul body odor.

The researchers said the finding isn't true across the board for all conservatives; but it was closely linked with people's support for socially conservative ideas and endorsement of President Trump.

"This relationship seems to be explained by a particular aspect of social conservatism called right-wing authoritarianism," lead author Marco Tullio Liuzza told Business Insider in an email. This "right-wing authoritarianism," he said, includes an acceptance of authority and a hostility towards groups that don't closely adhere to a traditional social order.

Conservatives don't like being grossed out

Psychologists have previously found that socially conservative people look away from gross images like blood and vomit quicker than liberals. Conservatives' brains are also more active in areas that are associated with processing fear.

Being grossed out is not a bad thing — such reactions have helped humans survive for millennia. As we wade our way through a world of pathogens, it's helpful to get turned off by any potential germy foreign objects or stinky stuff.

Liuzza said the strong reaction of conservatives "may share an evolutionary source with an emotion that evolved to protect our bodies by poisonous substances and diseases."

But other recent research has suggested that socially conservative people's ability to get easily grossed out can extend into prejudice for unfamiliar groups like immigrants or gay people.

The researchers caution that while the trend is an interesting psychological finding, it accounts for only a small portion of individual differences when it comes to people's political preferences.

In other words, you can't know for sure who your neighbor voted for just because they're wrinkling their nose.

Beauty Trend: Get inspired by the bright eyeliner look at Dior's FW18 show

Colourful eyeliner at the Dior Fall 2018 show

The plain face and statement bright eyeliner was a huge hit at PFW and might just be the perfect beauty trend for summer.

When Peter Philips, the Creative Director for Dior Beauty, received his brief for the makeup look he would create for Dior’s Fall 2018 show, he was a little surprised but the plain face and statement bright eyeliner was a huge hit and might just be the perfect beauty trend for summer.

Backstage at the Dior show, he shared, “Normally when designers send a brief, they start with a mood board and a conversation. I got a file with sunglasses. It said, ‘could this inspire you for the show?’" The brief in question referenced the sunglasses, in shades of orange, pink, blue, yellow, green, navy and black, that every single model wore down the runway along with hats.

“The girls who wear sunglasses have yellow eyeliner. Blue sunglasses, blue eyeliner, and I started playing with that,” Philips said. Since most of the coloured sunglasses were slightly transparent, they also allowed the brightly-hued liners to be seen. Philips used various colours of a new felt-tipped eyeliner, the Diorshow On Stage Liner (in matte black, vinyl black, brown, pink, bright blue, matte blue, classic blue, purple blue and more), which hits shelves in May 2018.

Given that the theme of the collection was inspired by the anniversary of 1968 student protests outside the Dior boutique in Paris, Philips made the liner blunt and graphic. “I didn’t want to make it too pretty or too precious.” Philips suggested starting slightly after the beginning of the eye, going straight and stopping before the eye ends. “Say what you have to say, but also show that you have fun with it."

The key to nailing this look is keeping the rest of your makeup to a minimal and letting your eyes do the talking. Go for brightly hued and highly pigmented liners that are waterproof and therefore longlasting.

World: As elections near, Egypt finds a new target: foreign news media

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi in Cairo, Egypt, November 24, 2017.

Egypt’s chief prosecutor delivered a withering broadside against the news media Wednesday, blaming the “forces of evil” for negative coverage and instructing his staff to take legal action against outlets deemed to be undermining Egypt’s security.

The remarks by the prosecutor, Nabil Sadek, were the latest escalation of a draconian crackdown on civil liberties before a presidential election that has become fraught with tension even though President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi faces no real opposition.

In comments that appeared aimed at the foreign news media, Sadek accused outlets of spreading false news “to disturb the public order and terrorize society.” A day earlier, Egypt had called for a boycott of the BBC over a documentary that aired last week detailing torture and illegal abductions by Egyptian security forces.

The State Information Service, which oversees the foreign media, said the BBC film was inaccurate because a young woman featured in the documentary later told a local television station that she had not been harmed.

Her mother said Tuesday that the woman had been coerced into giving a false statement to the local station. A day later, the mother was reported to have been arrested.

While el-Sissi has long treated Egyptian news outlets harshly, jailing dozens of reporters and blocking websites, he has generally spared foreign reporters the worst measures. That appears to have changed with the presidential election campaign.

A long list of rules announced by the national election commission in February seeks to dictate the questions journalists can ask voters, prohibits them from using photographs or headlines “not related to the topic” and forbids them from making “any observations about the voting process.”

Although the presidential vote, scheduled for March 26-28, is widely seen as a charade — el-Sissi’s sole opponent is an obscure politician who until recently backed him — the government has given no quarter to potential rivals.

Four serious candidates who might have challenged el-Sissi were sidelined, jailed or threatened with prosecution, and on Feb. 14 the authorities arrested Abdel-Moneim Abolfotoh, an opposition leader who contested the 2012 election but is not running this time.

Politics: White House press secretary insists that Hope Hicks' departure is not a 'scandal'

hope hicks

Sarah Huckabee Sanders told reporters that Hope Hicks had thought about her resignation "for a while."

  • White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders told reporters that Hope Hicks, the White House communications director who is resigning, thought about her decision "for a while."
  • Sanders insisted that the development is not a "scandal."
  • Hicks' resignation follows her appearance before the House Intelligence Committee this week, during which lawmakers questioned her for more than eight hours.

Following reports of White House communications director Hope Hicks' resignation, White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders on Wednesday warned reporters not to "make this a scandal."

"Guys, quit trying to make this a scandal — it's not," Sanders said, according to Washington Examiner reporter Gabby Morrongiello.

"Don't try to read more into it than exists," Sanders reportedly continued. "This is something [Hicks] has been thinking about for a while, so maybe it's surprising for you guys but it's not like it happened overnight."

Hicks, one of President Donald Trump's confidantes since the onset of his 2016 US presidential campaign, reportedly told colleagues she had been thinking for several months about when she would leave the administration.

Hicks's resignation was first reported by New York Times reporter Maggie Haberman, who also noted that there was no departure date yet.

"There are no words to adequately express my gratitude to President Trump," Hicks said in a statement. "I wish the President and his administration the very best as he continues to lead our country."

In his own statement, Trump said of Hicks: "She is as smart and thoughtful as they come, a truly great person," Trump said in a statement. "I will miss having her by my side but when she approached me about pursuing other opportunities, I totally understood."

Hicks, a former model, had no previous political experience prior to joining the Trump campaign. The Times reported that Hicks told fellow staffers that she accomplished all she felt she could in the job, where she became one of the most prominent figures in the Trump White House. But her prominence was not met with a large public profile, as Hicks rarely made public comments or spoke on camera.

Allan Smith contributed reporting.

In Bayelsa State: PHEDC to begin installation of 12,000 prepaid metres by April

Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHED)

The Head of Consumer Services, PHEDC, Godwin Oroewiro disclosed this when he led other management staff of the company in a meeting with a coalition of civil society and youths’ groups in Yenagoa on Wednesday.

The Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHEDC) says it will begin the first phase of installation of 12,000 prepaid metres in Yenagoa by April.

The Head of Consumer Services, PHEDC, Godwin Oroewiro disclosed this when he led other management staff of the company in a meeting with a coalition of civil society and youths’ groups in Yenagoa on Wednesday.

Oroewiro said that the installation of the prepaid metres will last for four months, stressing that the new metres and bulk billing system will eliminate the problems associated with estimated billing in the state.

He apologised to the people of the state over the epileptic power supply being experienced in the state.

The Head of Consumer Services assured that the company was doing everything possible including the optimisation of its facilities and upgrading of its distribution network to restore stable power supply in Bayelsa.

Earlier, the leader of the coalition and chairman of CLO in the state, Chief Nengi James, had intimated the management of PHEDC of the epileptic power supply in the state.

He urged the company to improve power supply to avoid further confrontation from the people, assuring the management that the people were willing to pay for power consumed.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that residents of Bayelsa had on Tuesday took to the streets of the state capital to stage a peaceful protest to the operational office of the PHEDC to protest two months power outage.

Politics: Sessions defends himself against extraordinary Trump attack, says he'll 'continue to discharge my duties with integrity and honor'

jeff sessions

President Donald Trump expressed disgust that his attorney general asked an Obama-era internal watchdog to investigate allegations of surveillance abuse.

  • President Donald Trump on Wednesday slammed Attorney General Jeff Sessions for tapping the Justice Department's inspector general, who was nominated by President Barack Obama, to investigate allegations of surveillance abuse.
  • Trump questioned why Sessions wasn't using the department's lawyers instead.
  • Sessions said on Tuesday that he thought it was "the appropriate thing" for the inspector general to take on the investigation.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions defended himself on Wednesday against a public attack from President Donald Trump, saying the Justice Department will continue its work in a "fair and impartial manner."

"As long as I am the Attorney General, I will continue to discharge my duties with integrity and honor, and this Department will continue to do its work in a fair and impartial manner according to the law and Constitution," Sessions said in a statement.

Trump had lashed out earlier at Sessions for asking the Justice Department's internal watchdog, who was nominated in 2011 by President Barack Obama, to investigate allegations of surveillance abuse rather than using the department's lawyers.

"Why is A.G. Jeff Sessions asking the Inspector General to investigate potentially massive FISA abuse," Trump tweeted, referring to surveillance warrants granted by the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court. "Will take forever, has no prosecutorial power and already late with reports on Comey etc. Isn't the I.G. an Obama guy? Why not use Justice Department lawyers? DISGRACEFUL!"

Sessions announced Tuesday that the Justice Department's inspector general, Michael Horowitz, was investigating House Republicans' accusations — laid out in a controversial memo released earlier this month by the chamber's Intelligence Committee — that the FBI abused its authority in seeking a warrant to surveil a former Trump campaign adviser in 2016.

House Democrats on Saturday released a memo countering those claims, arguing that the Justice Department and the FBI provided ample evidence to the surveillance court that justified seeking the so-called FISA warrant.

Horowitz has been the department's inspector general since 2012. Trump hasn't nominated anyone for the post, so Horowitz has stayed on the job.

"We believe the Department of Justice must adhere to the highest standards in the FISA court, and yes, it will be investigated, and I think that's just the appropriate thing," Sessions said at a news conference Tuesday, adding that the inspector general would lead the investigation.

Trump's tweet on Wednesday was far from the first time he has publicly criticized his attorney general. In a dayslong Twitter rant last week, the president demanded to know why Sessions wasn't investigating Obama in connection with the investigation into Russia's interference in the 2016 US election.

Trump has also berated Sessions since the attorney general recused himself from all matters related to the Russia investigation in March. Trump has said he wouldn't have nominated Sessions as attorney general had he known Sessions would do so.

Romantic: 7 sex games you absolutely have to try with bae

3 convenient truths about a friends-with-benefits relationship

Sexy games that are way more fun than truth or dare and pillow fighting.

Here are seven sexy games to try with bae when it feels like things are becoming a little boring and routine in the sack.

Even if things aren't boring yet. who says no extra fun?!

Depending on where you are in your sex game with your boo, these seven games will surely bring an extra spark or pump up the energy and intensity of your relationship.

1. What is your fantasy?

You and your bae write down fantasies you have yet to share with your partner. Put the slips of paper into a hat or a bowl, then take turns unfolding them, one by one.

What's next? Of course you execute them! This allows you to try out a whole bunch of new, super-sexy things.

2. Make believe

You'll need a large bag full of props for this one — a fireman's hat, a nurse's dress, a face mask, cheerleader's skirt, etc

Take turns reaching nto the bag. Whichever prop you grab is a role play fantasy you have to act out.

Hey, a little role play never hurt anybody, right?!

3. Time bomb

To have a blast with this game, [you catch the pun, right?] pick a time interval — 15 minutes sounds fair enough.

Whatever interval you choose, tease each other with kissing, touching, and every form of foreplay you want but you absolutely should not allow penetration until that much time has elapsed.

This is perfect if you have been having problems with hurried foreplay. Take your time on this one and rediscover the magic of roving hands and warm lips.

ALSO READ: You and bae should try sex at these 20 places at least once

4. Blind man's buff

A necktie, scarf, or a blindfold and you're ready to roll with this one.

Blindfold him and lead him to the bed or some other part of the house you prefer. Proceed to ravish him as slowly, recklessly and teasingly as you want.

Being unable to see during sex has two major effects — it dramatically increases sensitivity and psychological vulnerability. Enough said.

5. Naughty girl

Whisper in your man's ear all the wrong things you did that day.

Did you fail to finish your task at work? Did you leave the dishes in the sink when you promised to wash it? Did you curse a colleague at work or forgot to call a client you should have?

Just report yourself to him then kneel on the bed. Your man spanks you using his hand or a hairbrush or a not-too-scary disciplinary accessory.

A smart smack on the butt creates a tingly, alert sensation that combines well with the other feelings of sex. You'll love it.

6. Follow the honey

Bring in a squeeze bottle of honey and plant little dollops of honey on parts of your body that you want your partner to kiss. Just be sure to have some tissue or wet wipes around.

You could draw a little treasure map toward your underwear, or use the sticky markers to note erogenous zones he hasn't explored yet, like your toes or collar bone.

7. Hide and seek

This is an x-rated version of that childhood game everyone loves.

The next time your partner is on their way home, leave a pile of your clothes by the door and a note in the entryway saying you're hiding somewhere naked.

Once they find you, they get to decide what comes next — and then you can do the seeking for round two.

Politics: White House officials are reportedly tired of hearing about a 'bloody nose' strike against North Korea

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in an undated photo released by North Korea's state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) on September 16, 2017.

The term loosely refers to a limited strike, aimed at sending North Korea a message to curb its nuclear ambitions.

  • White House officials and aides reportedly dislike the "bloody nose" strike label.
  • The term loosely refers to a limited strike, aimed at sending North Korea a message to curb its nuclear ambitions.

The "bloody nose" strike against North Korea that was reportedly proposed by White House officials appears to have brought about as much confusion now as it did shock when it was first reported.

The term has been circulating around foreign policy circles after The Telegraph published an article that cited "well-placed" sources in December. Since then, the two words have alarmed North Korea analysts for its brazen approach that could spiral into further conflict with North Korea on an unprecedented scale.

The term has even spread to South Korean news outlets, which have translated the phrase literally and prompted scathing opinion columns from critics.

But White House officials denied using the term and said in classified briefings and in public that they would not support the policy, according to a Washington Post report on Monday. One administration official reportedly believed the term would have "petered out."

"The phrase has never, ever been uttered by anyone in the White House," a senior administration official said in The Post.

The apparent conflict between the widespread reporting of White House discussions of a limited strike, and the denials of the existence of a "bloody nose" strategy by several senior US officials, may just be semantics, foreign policy analysts said in The Post.

National security adviser H.R. McMaster, who reportedly denied having a plan to carry out a "bloody nose" strike, was previously believed to have been one of the main advocates for the plan, according to sources in a CNN report.

Despite the conflict between McMaster's denials and reports of his proposal, he reportedly became frustrated with the term and joked to his aides that they ought to work on a "stubbed toe" strategy, The Post reported.

Though the exact scope of the strike remains unclear, the prevailing theory is that of a limited strike intended to send a message to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. One former US security official described it as "options that would allow them to punch the North Koreans in the nose, get their attention and show that we're serious," according to The Telegraph.

This unity and success are needed now more than ever, because elections are now looming.

"Now that INEC has come out with the timetable for elections in 2019, the party should prepare itself for congresses at A. Wards, B. Local Governments, C. States and D. Centre.

"We should strictly follow the constitution of the Party in undertaking these party elections. We should ensure internal democracy and avoid shortcuts and illegal maneuvers which have characterized the opposition party with the consequences that they are now divided.

"The APC has a history of conducting free and fair primaries whenever consensus about any candidacy is not reached. Regardless of the outcomes of the primary processes, it is imperative that we all work together to ensure the victory of our party."

Buhari also used the opportunity to, again, list the failures of his predecessor Goodluck Jonathan and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as a whole.

He said Nigeria was on the verge of collapse before he took over, adding that Jonathan's government was characterized by monumental fraud.

The President further said, "I must state at the outset that to succeed we must in all our actions and decisions follow strictly the constitution of our party. It is easy to forget that we succeeded a government with a record of unprecedented theft and systematic mismanagement.

"Nigeria was fast heading for a state of collapse. It is easy to forget the fuel subsidy fraud, arms fund diversion, depleted excess de Account savings, depleted foreign reserves, massive unpaid debts to contractors and suppliers amidst failure to invest or even maintain our infrastructure namely railways, roads, electricity, inspite of having earned over US$500 billion from Oil & Gas alone, during the 16 years of PDP rule.

"Lest we forget, we must always remind ourselves of the dire situation in which we came to office.

"Therefore we must not be shy in projecting our tremendous achievements from 2015 to date. The territorial integrity of Nigeria longer under threat. A number of security challenges still exist, but they exist in even the most well policed and well-secured countries. I am confident that the measures we are taking will tackle the acts of rural banditry, herdsmen/farmers conflicts, communal clashes, kidnappings and other crimes."

Although Buhari is yet to formally announce if he would be seeking a re-election in 2019, it is widely believed that he would run.

He recently directed the national leader of the party, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu to reunite and reconcile aggrieved members of the party nationwide ahead of the 2019 elections.

Tech: Rome just got hit with a rare 'Beast from the East' snowstorm, and even priests at the Vatican came out to play

Roofs are seen covered in snow in downtown Rome, Italy February 26, 2018.

The Earth seems to be running a serious fever. The arctic is at its warmest temperature in years, while a "Beast from the East" cold snap is hitting Europe.

Rome wasn't built in a day, and it wasn't built for snow, either.

In fact, the Italian capital had seen white powder only once in the past 30 years, until Monday.

That's when thermostats at the Vatican dipped below freezing, shocking priests and nuns who got stuck in the snow. Even the army had to be called in to help clear the Roman streets, Reuters reported.

But the Romans aren't the only ones shaking in their bitterly-cold boots. Across Europe, people are dealing with a blast of cold air this week, as a so-called "Beast from the East" moves across Europe, bringing chilly, extreme weather in from Siberia.

Scientists are pointing out that it's all part of a disturbing trend: the polar jet stream has been acting weird lately, and the North Pole is actually warmer than parts of Europe this week.

Meteorologist Eric Holthaus called it a "shocking sign of our Earth's accelerating planetary fever."

Take a look at how Italy looks in the snow:

Roman temperatures normally never dip below zero.

The average low temperature for February should be 3.5 degrees Celsius or 38 Fahrenheit, while the high is typically near 13 Celsius or 55 Fahrenheit, according to the World Meteorological Association.

But on Monday, the temperature in the city dropped below 20 degrees Fahrenheit, or -7 Celsius.

More than four inches of snow fell in four hours at the airport, Reuters reported.

The city ground to a halt, closing schools and urging residents to stay home.

Roman city officials asked places more used to seeing snow if they could borrow snow plows, according to Reuters.

The last time the city saw real snow like this was in 2012, which was Rome's first fresh powder dusting in nearly three decades.

That's when a blistering cold snap killed hundreds of people across Europe.

This week, the World Meteorological Association (WMO) is issuing cold weather warnings across the European continent once again.

“This cold period … could be a risk to life for vulnerable people exposed to the cold,” the WMO said.

The cold blasts didn't stop these tourists from pausing to snap a selfie in front of the Spanish Steps.

And this priest couldn't resist a rare chance to hurl a snowball from St. Peter's Square, at the Vatican.

Other priests just marveled at the highly unusual sight.

The abnormally chilly European temperatures are one indicator that the world's climate is in chaos.

Climate scientist Robert Rohde from Berkeley pointed out on Twitter that temperatures across the Arctic have also been going haywire recently, averaging 54 degrees Fahrenheit higher (+30 Celsius) than normal.

Pope Francis recently blasted climate change deniers, saying: "Those who deny this must go to the scientists and ask them. They speak very clearly."

The Pope also said "history will judge" those who don't take action on climate change.

Aboard the papal plane in September, the pope said politicians have a "moral responsibility" to do their part to fight the planet's shifting temperatures, which are a consequence of the greenhouse gases emitted by humans' burning of fossil fuels.

"When you don't want to see, you don't see," the Pope said.

The freeze, fueled by a flip-flop-like disturbance in the Arctic jet stream, is expected to continue across Europe in the coming days.

Politics: 4 far-right terrorist plots have been foiled in the last year in the UK, and the threat is only growing

mark rowley

Britain's head of counter-terrorism policing has warned of unsettling similarities between Islamist terrorism and the far-right.

  • British authorities have stopped four far-right terror attacks in the last year.
  • The UK's outgoing head of counter-terrorism policing has warned of the growing danger of the far-right.
  • "For the first time we have a home-grown proscribed white-supremacist neo-Nazi terror group," Mark Rowley said.

The threat of far-right terrorism in the UK is growing and British authorities have foiled four terror plots in the last year, a retiring senior police officer has warned.

Assistant commissioner Mark Rowley, the UK's head of counter-terrorism policing, said in a speech at think tank Policy Exchange on Monday that the threat from the far-right in Britain is "of grave concern," and it is becoming increasingly organised.

"For the first time we have a home-grown proscribed white-supremacist neo-Nazi terror group, which seeks to plan attacks and build international networks," he said, according to a transcript of his remarks. "You will agree this is a matter of grave concern."

He also made comparisons between the far-right and the threat of Islamist terrorism: "Ironically, while Islamist and Extreme Right Wing ideologies may appear to be at opposing ends of the argument it is evident that they both have a great deal in common.

"I think it important to expose some of what we see as extremists systematically and determinedly trying to undermine a peaceful, tolerant and democratic society."

He added: "Islamist and right wing extremism is reaching into our communities through sophisticated propaganda and subversive strategies creating and exploiting vulnerabilities that can ultimately lead to acts of violence and terrorism."

Far-right leaders Tommy Robinson and Jayda Fransen — neither of whom have been accused of terror offenses — were accused by Rowley of producing "extremist rhetoric with the common goal of increasing tensions and divisions in communities."

British law enforcement currently has more than 600 terrorism investigations underway across the spectrum (Islamism, the far-right, and others), with more than 3,000 subjects of interest.

"10 conspiracies of an Islamist nature were stopped since the Westminster attack," Rowley said, referring to the March 2017 terror attack in London that left 6 dead.

"And I can tell you today that over that same period police have been able to prevent a further four extreme right wing inspired plots in the UK.

"It is important we make these figures public in order to illustrate the growth of right wing terrorism."

In February 2019, Darren Osborne was sentenced to life in prison after driving a van into a group of Muslims outside a mosque in Finsbury Park, North London, killing one person and injuring nine others. The judge said Osborne was "rapidly radicalised over the internet by those determined to spread hatred of Muslims."
