Buhari wins presidential primaries in Kaduna with 1.9 million votes

Cameroon insists it will be ready to host Cup of Nations

[FILE PHOTO] Ahmad Ahmad, president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) AFP

A top Cameroon football official told AFP Sunday his nation “will be ready” to host next year’s Africa Cup of Nations, even though the final decision has been delayed.

Cameroon’s hosting of African football’s showpiece event has been in jeopardy for months since the decision to increase the tournament from 16 to 24 teams.

The Confederation of African Football had been expected to confirm Cameroon as host on Friday at their meeting in Sharm el Sheikh, but instead postponed a vote until the end of November,

It said there had been a “big delay in the building of infrastructure” in Cameroon.

But Dieudonne Happi, the interim head of the west African country’s crisis-hit football federation, said: “In the current state of things, I can tell you bluntly and without any risk of being wrong that Cameroon will be ready.

“The delay will be made up,” said Happi, the chairman of the Cameroonian federation’s normalisation committee, adding that the country will be ready “no later than December 31”, the deadline set by CAF in March.

An inspection committee from CAF and world football’s governing body FIFA will visit Cameroon in October to assess preparations.

The Cameroonian league is currently suspended because of funding issues and the federation is without a president.

Morocco, which unsuccessfully bid to host the 2026 World Cup, has lobbied to replace Cameroon as hosts.

“We are obviously ready to organise a major African event,” said Hamza El Hajoui, the president of the Moroccan football federation, adding that his country was “respectful” of both the CAF process and “the candidacy of a friendly country that is Cameroon.”

Ahmad Ahmad, the CAF president, denied that his organisation had already decided to take the tournament away from Cameroon.

“CAF has not yet taken any decision to the contrary… that the Cup of Nations will be origanized in Cameroon,” he told a press conference.

The tournament will take place on June 15-July 13.

The tournament used to be in January, forcing European clubs to release their players in the middle of the season.

As September Comes To An End, Davido Fails To Drop His Promised Sophomore Album

Back in March,  during the HEADIES 2018 Awards ceremony, DMW boss, Davido announced he’d be dropping his sophomore album in September.

The announcement was made as he gave his acceptance speech while receiving the award for the Artiste of the Year category.

READ: Headies 2018: Davido Announced His Sophomore Album Will Drop In September

The news created a lot excitement among fans as it has been five years since he released his debut album, Omo Baba Olowo in 2012.

After the award, Davido went straight to releasing songs like Assurance,  Nwa Baby and AZA, all which have since become hit records. He has also been featured on a couple of songs which have done well.

With the momentum built, it would seem as if the singer was going to keep to his promise this time, after teasing fans a couple of times with promises that never materialised.

But it’s hours to the end of the month of September and there is no single word from the artiste or his camp to suggest an album dropping. There hasn’t been any rollout plan neither has any statement been put out to carry fans along on any new development.

It’s safe to say a remote reason for failing to meet up with the promise could be because of his recent busy political schedule. Davido over the past three weeks has been actively involved in the political campaign of his uncle, Senator Ademola Adeleke who was running for the governorship sit in their home state of Osun.

Now that the elections are over, we hope the Davido goes back to what his day job is, which is music and drop what is believed to be the much expected BADDEST album.

Independence Day: 5 things you should know about this holiday not taught in school

5 things you should know about this holiday not taught in school

October 1, 1960 is not just a public holiday, here are some of the things you should know about Nigeria's Independence Day.

Independence Day is a very special date in the history of Nigeria. Unfortunately, the dearth of History as an independent subject in Nigerian elementary schools deprives the youth of adequate knowledge about the importance of OCTOBER 1, 1960.

The only memorable thing most pupils in primary and secondary schools know about the Nigerian Independence is that October 1 of every year is a public holiday.

Dear students, the date is much more than a public holiday. The date is significantly tied to the history of Nigeria and every Nigerian youth deserves to know everything that surrounds this holiday.

Here are five things you've probably not been thought about Independence Day at school.

1. The Golden Voice of Tafawa Balewa

The history of how Nigeria became an independent nation is never complete without mentioning Alhaji Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa and his golden voice.

Born on October 1, 1912, Balewa, who was a trained teacher rose to fame from being a school teacher to a respected politician. He represented the northern interests in the colonial government and held different positions. He eventually became the first and only Prime Minister of the country in 1960.

Aside from being a respected statesman, Tafawa Balewa was also famous for his eloquence. His oratory skill earned him accolades among international communities. And that was the main reason he was nicknamed the Golden Voice of Africa.

On his 48th birthday which coincided with the independence of Nigeria in 1960, Tafawa Balewa, as the PM of the country declared Nigeria's independence and also delivered a hope-filled speech that set Nigerians alight with joys and celebrations.

Sadly, on January 15, 1966, soldiers who were executing Nigeria’s first military coup kidnapped and killed the first Prime Minister.

2. Race Course, Lagos

Race Course is a 14.5-hectare ceremonial ground in Lagos Island. It was the foremost venue for government events when Lagos was the capital of Nigeria.

This place might look empty and deserted today, but the ground played a significant role in the independent Nigeria history.

On October 1, 1960, Race Course was the birthplace of Nigeria Independence where Alhaji Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa declared the country as a sovereign nation.

After the gruesome killing of the Prime  Minister, the Federal Government of Nigeria renamed the ground to Tafawa Balewa Square.

3. Why October 1, 1960?

The elections of 312 Nigerians into the Federal House of Representatives on Saturday, December 12, 1959, and the first motion the elected parliamentarians passed on January 14, 1960, led to the choice of October 1, 1960, as Nigeria's Independent Day.

Before his death on October 9, 2013, the former Governor of Plateau State, Chief Solomon Lar, who was a member of the parliament in an interview with the Vanguard said after passing the motion, the Prime Minister, Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa known for his rhetorical brilliance went to London to finalise talks for the actualisation of October 1, 1960, as the Independence Day.

''This came to reality when, just before the midnight of September 30, 1960, we all gathered at the Lagos Race Course awaiting the birth of an independent and emancipated new nation called Nigeria'', Lar said in the interview.

4. Who is Jaja Wachukwu?

Apart from National heroes like Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe and Sir Ahmadu Bello little is said about Jaja Wachukwu, who was also a prominent figure during the Independence struggle.

Jaja was the first indigenous Speaker of the House of Representatives of Nigeria who replaced the British Speaker of the House, Sir Frederic Metcalfe.

On October 1, 1960, Jaja received Nigeria's instrument of Independence from Princess Alexandra of Ken as the Speaker of the House of Representatives of the newly independent nation. He died on November 7, 1996, in Enugu.

5. The last British Governor-General

The reign of the British colonial masters in Nigeria came to an end with the administration of Sir James Wilson Robertson in 1960.

Robertson was said to have been sent to Nigeria to serve as the head of the British colony because of because of his good work in England. He was Governor-General of Nigeria from 15 June 1955 to 16 November 1960.

In his memoir published in 1974, Robertson narrates his 40 years of experience in Africa. He admitted that the colonial masters left their colonial territories in Africa partly because of the pressure on them to go.

Kachikwu, Utomi, others shun APC primaries

Prof. Pat Utomi

The crisis rocking the All Progressives Congress, APC deepened on Sunday as three of the four governorship aspirants have opted out while asking for a postponement as delegate lists remained elusive to them.

This was disclosed by one of the aspirants, Prof Pat Utomi who addressed journalists in Asaba, just as efforts by journalists to access the Federal Technical College, Asaba primaries venue, was abortive, as the gate was barricaded by gun-wielding security operatives.

Utomi described the process as illegitimate, adding that the delegates list is unavailable for the aspirants, which is against the norm as they are supposed to be able to access the lists three days to the primaries.

He said at a meeting between critical stakeholders that included Major General Lawrence Onoja, rtd., three of the aspirants suggested a postponement due to the shortcomings that have plagued the shadow polls.

According to Utomi those present at the meeting included ex-Gov Emmanuel Uduaghan, Victor Ochei, Prof Pat Utomi and Dr Ibe Kachikwu.

“The delegates list is not available, aspirants have not seen the list,” Utomi said.

“I believe only those who drew up the list have it. The list should have been made available to all at least three days to the primaries to enable aspirants to make their pitch to them. There is no level playing field for all aspirants.

“This will create a crisis of legitimacy. We have suggested that the primaries be postponed, that way we will have a truly democratic process.”

ASUU: More lecturers disagree with FG on education bank scheme

7 types of lecturers you'll find in Nigerian universities

The lecturers say the proposed tuition and education bank scheme will deny poor access to education.

Another set of Nigerian lecturers have raised their voices against the proposed education bank scheme.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, Port Harcourt chapter has also rejected the idea of a new tuition scheme by the Federal Government describing it as an attempt to commercialise public university education in Nigeria.

The Union's Zonal Coordinator, Uzo Onyebinama said the proposed scheme would deny the poor access to higher education if approved.

According to Punch, Onyebinama while addressing journalists on Thursday, September 28, 2018, said the Federal Government’s introduction of the scheme into the renegotiation of the 2009 ASUU and the Federal Government’s agreement process was an attempt to blackmail the union before the Nigerian students.

Recall that Prof. Lawan Abubakar, the Bauchi Zonal Coordinator of the Academic Staff Union of Universities also said rejected the scheme describing it as a wild idea.

Abubakar also said the union rejected the idea on the ground that ''that the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria clearly states that funding education is the sole responsibility of Governments at various levels and not parents.

He said added that the idea of education bank would not work in Nigeria because not all the students will have access to the loan.

BREAKING: Tinubu speaks on Lagos APC governorship primary, backs Sanwo-Olu’s emergence

Ahead of the All Progressive Congress (APC) governorship primary in Lagos, a former governor of the state and National Leader of the party, Bola Ahmed Tinubu has formally endorsed the candidacy of Jide Sanwo-Olu.

The governorship primary election which was earlier scheduled to hold on Sunday along with other states was shifted to Monday due to logistics constraints in both Lagos and Imo States, according to the party.

Read his statement below:

Tomorrow, our party and the people of Lagos will have an encounter with destiny. We shall hold our governorship primary.

With the holding of direct primaries to elect governorship candidates in Lagos and other states, the APC takes a groundbreaking step toward greater internal democracy and progressive governance for the benefit of all people.

While our party is young, it has grown fast and has travelled far in a short time. This speaks well of the character of you, the party’s rank-and-file members. What, in other nations, has taken political parties generations to achieve, we have done in a few brief years.

No other party in Nigeria dare attempt what we have already dedicated ourselves to do. I thank and commend all APC members and all Lagosians who have lent their support to this historic and humane mission upon which our party has embarked.

We are democrats in the truest sense of the word. As such, we forever search for what is good and right for the people. With this ideal as our guide, tomorrow’s primary cannot be shaded by selfish ambition or the perceived personal grievance between this or that person.

Something much greater waits in the balance. What is at stake is nothing less than the future of the people of this state and how we can best maximise our collective destiny. By resort to direct primaries, the party places the people’s future soundly in their hands.

As democracy would have it, you shall be the authors of the party’s nomination and hopefully our next state government. I trust in the wisdom of the people and will abide it. However, as a leader of the party and as a former governor of our beloved and excellent Lagos, I would be remiss if I did not make a few observations regarding the primary. My goal is and shall always be a better Lagos. To this objective, I have dedicated the greater part of my public life.

Roughly 20 years ago, a corps of dedicated and patriotic Lagosians, put aside personal interests and rivalries, to put their minds and best ideas together for the good of the state. Out of this collaborative effort, was born a master plan for economic development that would improve the daily lives of our people. Bestowed on me was the honour of a lifetime when I was elected to be your governor in 1999. My administration faithfully implemented that plan.

The government of my immediate successor, Tunde Fashola, also honoured this enlightened plan. Where state government remained true to that blueprint, positive things happened. During my tenure and Governor Fashola’s, Lagos state recorded improvements in all aspects of our collective existence, from public health to public sanitation, from education to social services, from the administration of justice to the cleaning of storm and sewage drains.

Businesses, large and small, invested, hired millions of workers and thrived. All Lagosians were to fully participate and justly benefit from the social dividends and improvements wrought by this plan. From the common labourer to business leaders, to professionals and our industrious civil service. We all were to be partners in a monumental but joint enterprise.

None was to be alienated. None was to be left out. And none were to be pushed aside. This is especially true for those who contributed so much to our development, whether as a business leader who has invested heavily in Lagos the homeowner who struggles to pay his fair share of taxes or as someone employed in the hard work of keeping our streets and byways clean so that others may go about their daily tasks unimpeded.

I make no pretence that the master plan is perfect. It can always be fine-tuned. However, whenever a government departed from this plan without a compelling reason, the state and its people have borne the painful consequence of the improper departure. I am encouraged by the emergence of a candidate in this primary who has served the state in senior positions in my administration, the Fashola administration and even in the current one.

While possessing a wealth of experience and exposure, he is a young man endowed with superlative vision and commitment. Most importantly, he understands the importance of the blueprint for development. He esteems it as a reliable and well-conceived vehicle for the future development of the state. He also knows the value of reaching out and working with others in order to maximize development and provide people with the best leadership possible.

We walk into this primary strong and confidently believing in the right course we are to take. We shall emerge from this primary even stronger and more confident that we have taken that course by returning Lagos and our party to their finest path.”

Nigeria's main unions suspend national strike

Nigeria’s main labour unions on Sunday suspended a national strike and announced further talks with the government about raising the minimum wage.

The blue collar Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and its white collar counterpart the Trade Union Congress (TUC) launched the strike on Wednesday.

The unions have proposed a new monthly minimum wage of between 45,000 naira and 65,000 naira ($125-$180, 107-154 euros) against the current 18,000 naira.

NLC president Ayuba Wabba told reporters an invitation had been received to resume talks with the government and private sector representatives on October 4 and 5.

“We demand that this shall be the final session of the committee and a final report will be submitted to Mr President immediately,” Wabba said in Nigeria’s capital of Abuja.

“In order to avail the committee of the necessary conducive environment to hold this crucial meeting and conclude it’s work, organised labour has… decided to suspend the strike action with effect from today, Sunday September 30, 2018,” Wabba said.

Ambode: 5 things Lagos state governor said 24 hours to APC primaries

Ambode, Tinubu exchange words at GAC meeting

Ambode had refused to back down or support the candidacy of Jide Sanwo-Olu claiming he will test his popularity at the primaries.

Governor Akinwunmi Ambode raised five crucial points barely 24 hours to the governorship primaries in the Lagos state chapter of the All Progressive Congress, APC.

Until recently, there were beliefs that the Governor, who seemed to have fallen out of favour with majority of the party members in the state, will secure a second term without mush hassle.

As the National Chairman of the APC, Adams Oshimohole announced the rescheduling of the primaries till Monday, October 1, 2018, the aspirants are beginning to tell members how competent they are.

Ambode had refused to back down or support the candidacy of Jide Sanwo-Olu claiming he will test his popularity at the primaries.

Pulse monitored the World Press Conference which held at the Lagos House in Alausa, Ikeja on Sunday, September 30, 2018.

Here are five important things you should know about Governor Ambode's speech.

1. I have served the poor and masses

I have done everything in the last three and half years to serve people selflessly and to serve the poor. And that is why you see that most of the projects we are doing is about alleviating the sufferings of the poor and the only thing is for us to continue to do that in next four years.

2. Appeal to APC Leaders

Do not let us go too far but we know and that is the truth, We don't want to talk about all the things that we know but we know that our leaders should have a rethink because the truth is this, I will not stand here on the mandate of Lagosians and allow our great party, APC to filter away the opportunity by putting in somebody that the opposition will take out because of lack of credibility.

So, I think our leaders should have a rethink, this is not about me but about the greater opportunity which APC stands for to change the progress of Nigeria together.

3. On Sanwo-Olu the main contender

In the last two or three weeks, they have been putting a lot of campaign of calumny in the social media and also disparaging our personality and our character but when you see it, we have never responded and have never abused anybody because we believe that there is always a reason for us to come together as a family. We are a one happy family in APC.

Now the truth is this, the candidate, the aspirant that they are putting up to compete against us is not a fit and proper person to take this position and that remains the fact, this is the truth. Party leaders and even party members have been misled to understand that this is a better candidacy than myself.

This particular aspirant as you all know, you can go and check, the records are there. This is somebody that has been arrested for spending fake American Dollars in a night club in America and he's been detained for months with mugshots before all these campaign started.

It's also known that he doesn't have the competence to do what he's been promoted for saying he is going to do, he doesn't have the competence to do what he is saying he can do. The records are there in Gbagada General hospital, this is somebody that has been rehabilitated before.

4. On the Lagos APC governorship primaries

The primaries is taking place tomorrow, we believe strongly, even though tomorrow is our Independence Day, it is important that everybody is prepared for the primaries. As we speak, the national headquarters of our party has sent the election committee to Lagos but I am yet to receive the guidelines. I am an aspirant in tomorrow's competition.

I believe strongly that the preparations are still on going but there are some things that we really need to iron out and I believe strongly that the chairman of our great party, Comrade Oshiomhole will be able to correct some of the things that we have noticed.

We are committed to the outcome of the primaries, we are committed to the tenets and principles of our great party but what we will not want to accept is to disenfranchise all the millions of people that we have been able to bring into the APC fold just by our mere performances. So, what we heard or what we have is that there is a register that is being brought to the state of which only include those that are registered with APC since 2014.

What about all the millions of other supporters of APC that we have brought into the fold till date. Now they say, this is the membership slip that I have, I don't have a membership card, so are you saying that me as a governor will not be entitled to vote tomorrow?

The national headquarters and electoral committee need to make adjustments and amendment to this. All the people that have registered as members of APC should be entitled to vote in the direct primaries, that isi how we entrench the democratic values that we are all preaching.

So, if someone like me can be disenfranchised because I don't have a card, what happens to other members of APC. We believe that these things can be corrected and we should allow everybody to come out and exercise their civic duties and right and choose whoever they want as their gubernatorial candidate for APC. So I plead with the NWC, with our party chairman and all those interested in this whole process to ensure we do the right thing. And I believe we will come out triumphant.

5. On  alleged rift with Tinubu and impeachment rumour

There is no war here, it's just about us trying to preach the tenets of Democracy. if we say we are democrats, let us practice the tenets of democracy till the end, that is what we must bequeath to the generation coming behind us. I am not willing to respond to the questions on rifts, there is no rift. The truth is the whole story is not about the progress and development of Nigeria only but more about the progress and development of Lagos. I have done everything to make sure that these values are the values that I preach, they are the values that I practice and God will help us.
