Iran executes teenage rape victim

Iran on Tuesday executed a teenage rape victim who was abused by her husband and convicted of killing him in a “grossly unfair trial”, Amnesty International said Tuesday.

An ethnic Kurd, Zeinab Sekaanvand was 15 when she married her husband. She was jailed two years later, while still legally a juvenile, for stabbing him to death.

She later retracted her confession, saying it had been extracted under duress.

Sekaanvand, who also accused her brother-in-law of raping her several times, was 24 when she was executed, Amnesty said.

“Her execution is profoundly unjust and shows the Iranian authorities’ contempt for the right of children to life,” said Philip Luther, Amnesty International’s Advocacy Director for the Middle East and North Africa.

“The fact that her death sentence followed a grossly unfair trial makes her execution even more outrageous.”

Presented with a state-appointed defence lawyer at only her final trial session, Sekaanvand retracted her earlier confession, which she said was coerced from her under torture by the police, according to Amnesty.

She said her husband was actually killed by her brother-in-law — the same man who raped her.

She said the brother-in-law told her that if she accepted responsibility, he would pardon her, which is permitted under Islamic law.

Amnesty said the court had failed to investigate her statements, relying on her original confession made in 2012 at a police station in which she was tortured for 20 days.

Finance: Amazon will raise workers' minimum wage to $15 an hour, more than twice the federal minimum — here's how many people in each state make minimum wage or less

Minimum wage work has been on the decline in the US for several years, and the number of workers making the minimum wage or less varies widely across the states.

  • Amazon announced on Tuesday that it plans to raise its minimum wage to $15 per hour for all of its US workers.
  • The federal minimum wage in the US is $7.25 an hour.
  • Minimum wage work has been on the decline in the US for several years, and the number of workers making the minimum wage or less varies widely across the states.
  • Using data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, we looked at how many hourly workers in each state earn the minimum wage or less.

Amazon announced on Tuesday that it plans to raise its minimum wage to $15 per hour for all of its US workers. That's more than twice the federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour.

Minimum wage work has been on the decline in the US for several years, and the number of workers making the minimum wage or less varies widely across the states.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics tracks how many people earned the Federal minimum wage or less in each state in a given year, releasing those results in an annual report on minimum wage earners.

The BLS bases its estimates on results from the Current Population Survey, a monthly survey run by the BLS and the Census Bureau that serves mainly as the basis for calculations of the unemployment rate, as well as providing a useful monthly snapshot of the US population.

That means that these estimates come from Americans' own self-reported earnings on the survey, rather than from employers or government administrative sources.

Both the number and percentage of the hourly work force earning the minimum wage or lower has declined in recent years as the labor market continues to tighten. In 2015, about 2.6 million hourly workers in the US were paid at or below the minimum wage — about 3.3% of the hourly workforce. By 2017, that dropped to 1.8 million workers, or 2.3% of all hourly paid workers.

Here's the percentage of hourly paid workers in each state who earned the federal minimum wage or less in 2017, according to the BLS' report. It's worth noting that many states have their own minimum wages that are set higher than the Federal minimum, and that this is likely a big driver in the variation among the states.

American Rapper Kanye West Wants To Finish Recording His ‘Yandhi’ Album In Africa

American Rapper, Kanye West, is delaying the release of his ‘Yandhi’ album to record in Africa. The ‘Yandi’ album was initially slated for release on the 29th of September but pushed back by the G.O.OD Music boss.

READ: Kanye West Addresses Drake, Nick Cannon And Tyson Beckford Over Comments About Kim Kardashian

The father of 3 who was interviewed on TMZ  explained that the album was delayed so that he can record it in Africa.

“I just need to go and grab the soil and cook food five times a day so that my metabolism stays up, and have my kids in the studio and have the mic in the open, so you can hear nature while we’re recording. I felt this energy when I was in Chicago. I felt the roots. We have to go to what is known as Africa.”  Kanye said.

The rapper revealed that a member of his management team had suggested he needed more time and that the ‘Yandhi’ album will now be released November 23rd which is a black friday.

He also made emphasis on what fans should expect from the album; “I started incorporating sounds that you never heard before and pushing and having concepts that people don’t talk about.”

“We have concepts talking about body-shaming and women being looked down upon for how many people that they slept with. It’s just a full Ye album.” West said.

The rapper definitely seems excited to be making music at the moment as he assures his fans to expect a great album “when the album arrives it will be a full ‘Ye’ record”.

Kanye West also recently changed his name to ‘YE’.

EU workers moving to UK post-Brexit need visas, skills

Britain's Prime Minister Theresa May (R) and Britain's Chancellor of the Exchequer Philip Hammond leave their hotel on the second day of the Conservative Party Conference 2018 at the International Convention Centre in Birmingham, on October 1, 2018. / AFP PHOTO / Paul ELLIS

EU workers coming to settle in Britain after Brexit will require visas and the preference will be for high-skilled immigrants, Prime Minister Theresa May said on Tuesday.

At her governing Conservative Party’s annual conference, May said she would release plans for a single system for EU and non-EU migrants later this year, ahead of a bill to be published in 2019.

Immigration was a key issue in the Brexit campaign ahead of the 2016 vote to leave the bloc.

May said the European Union’s free movement of people will end with Brexit and “for the first time in decades, it will be this country that controls and chooses who we want to come here”.

“It will be a skills-based system where it is workers’ skills that matter, not where they come from,” she said in a statement.

She added: “For too long, people have felt they have been ignored on immigration.

“The new skills-based system will make sure low-skilled immigration is brought down, and set the UK on the path to reduce immigration to sustainable levels.”

May said that those wanting to live and work in Britain for the long term would need to earn a minimum salary, and would only be able to bring their family if sponsored by their future employers.

However, she conceded that immigration policy could be affected by Britain’s future trade deals.

The EU may seek to negotiate continued preferential treatment in return for Britain’s access to its single market, while other countries could also seek visa waivers as part of their own trade agreements.

The government has already promised to protect the rights of more than three million EU citizens currently living in Britain after Brexit, even if there is no divorce deal.

British values test
Fleshing out the policy, Home Secretary Sajid Javid said the new immigration rules should be overhauled to reflect Britain’s values better.

“We now have a unique opportunity to reshape our immigration system for the future,” the interior minister told the conference in a speech.

He pledged to revamp the current “Life in the UK” test for incoming citizens, which focuses on British history questions, saying it should be about more than “pub quiz” skills.

It is more important for prospective citizens to understand the “liberal, democratic values that bind our society together”.

“We need to make it a British values test.”

He said there were 700,000 people in Britain who could not speak basic English, adding: “How can we possibly make a common home together?”

Latest figures from the Office for National Statistics found that in 2017, immigration ran at 630,000 people: 311,000 from outside the EU, 240,000 from within the EU and 80,000 Britons returning home.

Some 349,000 people emigrated, including 139,000 EU nationals, 126,000 Britons and 84,000 from the rest of the world, leaving net migration at 282,000.

The UK population is estimated at around 66 million.

Politics: Crude oil price is heading towards $90 per barrel and it is a goodnews for Nigeria

Crude oil price is heading towards $90 per barrel and it is a goodnews for Nigeria

With the global oil benchmark above $85 a barrel, it means an extra of $30 in revenue will be accrued to the federation account.

Global crude oil is heading towards to $90 per barrel, the highest since 2014 as a result of looming sanctions against Iran by the US.

Brent crude oil futures – the oil market which Nigeria and other international giant trade on – rose to $85.11 a barrel at the open of the market on Tuesday, October 2, 2018, according to data seen on oilprice.

While U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures still below the $80 per barrel mark at $75.66 a barrel.

US reimposes sanctions on Iran

In August 2018, the United States reimposed sanctions on Iran, targetting Tehran's energy sector.

The sanction comes into effect on November 4, 2018, and it is designed to cut crude exports from the third-biggest producer in the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).

Other international oil traders, including China's Sinopec, have also signalled to cut deal with Iranian oil

Nigeria in the mix

The Nigerian government has pegged crude oil price at $51 per barrel in the 2018 budget with a daily production of 2.3 million per barrel per day.

With the global oil benchmark above $85 a barrel, it means an extra of $30 in revenue will be accrued to the federation account.

Jubril Kareem, an oil and gas expert in a tweet on Monday, said, “Oil at $85/barrel. Trump's policy on Iran is Making Nigeria Great Again.

Kareem, however, said Nigeria’s policy on subsidising PMS will probably erode most of the greatness.

As 2019 presidential elections draw nearer, the government needs to work out ways for the economic prosperity for the 6th largest producer oil and biggest economy in Africa.

President Muhammadu Buhari who is seeking re-election for another 4-year term has hinged under-performance on dwindling oil price compared which pushed the country into economic recession in late 2016.

Jos violence escalates, 10 killed in a renewed hostility, several houses burnt

Jos FOLLOWED renewed hostilities in some parts of Jos, the capital of Plateau State on Monday to the early hour of Tuesday, no fewer than ten persons were killed and several houses including vehicles burnt by some irate youths out to avenge the killings of their kinsmen earlier killed.

It would be recalled that some parts of the state capital have been in crisis since last Friday as a result of the 14 people killed by gunmen suspected to be Fulani herdsmen at Rukuba road in Jos North local government area of the state. The situation however turned ethnic on Sunday leading to the death of more people.

Tribune Online learnt that the situation took a frightening dimension on Monday at about 9:45 pm to the early hour of Tuesday when some people suspected to be fake soldiers in military uniform invaded Tina Junction, Dutse Uku of Jos North Council area and opened fire at the residence some of whom were keeping vigil over their community to wade off attack and gun down ten people.

Some of the residents of the area who spoke with Tribune Online said the fake military men shot indiscriminately at people and set houses ablaze at random adding that the elements held the communities to ransome for close to two hours before the arrival of the security agencies which later repelled them.

It was further gathered that the situation got worse in the early hour of Tuesday, when some Hausa/Fulani youths and the natives squared it up in areas like Rikkos, Dogon Dutse, Yan Shanu, Saint Michael area and burnt several houses including places of worships.

Among those who were shot by the fake military men was the community leader of the Mupum residing in Jos otherwise called Mishkaham Mupun of Nasarawa Gwom, Mr. Samuel Dawam. The affected areas are still locked down and residents indoor as at the time of filing this report.

Going round Jos city centre, especially the commercial area, the city is still deserted as many commercial premises are yet to open for businesses including commercial banks.

When contacted the Media Officer, Operation Safe Haven, Major Umar Adam confirmed renewed hostility in some parts of the state capital but declined comment on the number of casualty and the houses burnt.

“I know some people were killed and houses burnt but the figures are yet to be ascertained. We don’t work with speculation. All can tell you, for now, are that all the areas you mentioned are under control and our men are on top of the situation. When the figures are ready we would call you people and brief you accordingly, but for now normalcy has returned to the affected areas.

“On the allegation of fake military men, we are not aware of that because our men are fully on ground and they have the not apprehended any, we cannot comment on that. But we are encouraging them to live in peace with one another if they embrace peace bad elements will not infiltrate them he said.

However, the Governor in an independent state broadcast expressed his concern on the persisting security challenge in the state and vowed to tackle the situation and restore normalcy to all affected parts of the state.

“It is sad that we are celebrating this year’s independence with heavy hearts, considering the recent unfortunate incidences at Rukuba road, and some areas in the Jos metropolis. Some innocent citizens were attacked and killed by agents of evil and destruction.

“My administration feels deeply concerned and has directed security agencies to continue their tireless efforts at nipping the incidents in the bud. I, therefore, dedicate this year’s independence message to the deceased and their families as well as the unfortunately displaced citizens who have been dislocated from their homes by senseless violent attacks and living under various forms of trauma and deprivations.

“My prayer goes out to all the victims with the assurance that this administration will not leave any stone unturned towards ensuring that critical issues of resettlement are properly addressed. I am glad that the special committee on the resettlement of displaced persons constituted by the administration is working round the clock to ensure early return of the IDPs to their ancestral homes before the end of the year, while more radical measures are being taken to contain the situation within the ambits of the law. He said.

Imperious Osaka saunters into China Open third round

Naomi Osaka of Japan reacts during her women's singles second round match against Danielle Collins of the US at the China Open tennis tournament in Beijing on October 2, 2018. / AFP PHOTO / FRED DUFOUR

Naomi Osaka is keen to move on from the “bittersweet” memories of last month’s US Open triumph and she did just that with a ruthless display at the China Open on Tuesday.

The young Japanese star thrashed unseeded American Danielle Collins 6-1, 6-0 in just 53 minutes on Beijing’s outside hard courts to saunter into round three.

Not to be outdone, China’s on-form Wang Qiang continued her hot streak with a 6-0, 6-0 thrashing of Latvia’s 2017 French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko.

Ostapenko, the 12th seed, required treatment on her left arm during the match, but this was still a hugely impressive display from Qiang in front of her home crowd.

The 20-year-old Osaka, whose maiden Grand Slam was overshadowed by Serena Williams’s row with the chair umpire in New York, faces 10th seed Julia Goerges next in the Chinese capital.

Osaka’s reputation is growing fast and organisers on Tuesday said that she has booked her place in the season-ending WTA Finals Singapore for the first time.

But the world number six has appeared to struggle with the fallout from the tempestuous final at the US Open, where Williams branded chair umpire Carlos Ramos “a thief” and later accused him of sexism.

“For me, I don’t know, I don’t know, the memory of the US Open is a little bit bittersweet,” Osaka said on Monday.

Osaka said on Tuesday following her hammering of Collins that her coaching team had been trying to keep her qualification for Singapore secret from her.

“Before someone told me I had to get to the semis here, then I think they thought I would have felt relieved, then maybe I wouldn’t have been as motivated,” she said.

In the men’s draw, top seed Juan Martin del Potro called for treatment by a physio but was mostly comfortable in beating Spain’s Albert Ramos-Vinolas 7-5, 6-2 in his opener.

Also safely into round two is third seed Grigor Dimitrov, who defeated the American Tennys Sandgren 7-5, 6-3.

General Electric's new CEO is a catalyst for operational improvements and should "put a floor in the stock," RBC says.

The company announced Monday that CEO John Flannery would be removed from his role after 14 months on the job, and that current GE board member and former Danaher CEO Lawrence Culp, Jr., would replace him. GE shares surged more than 13% on the news, signaling market confidence in the change of leadership.

"We have known Mr. Culp for over 15 years and have deep respect for his leadership and relentless focus on operating excellence and accountability," a team of RBC analysts led by Deane Dray said in a note sent out to clients on Tuesday.

"Investor confidence in Larry Culp's strategic vision and operating excellence should put a floor in the stock."

Last week, Dray warned that GE stock hadn't bottomed yet, and that investors were skeptical of the company's ability to hit its full-year earnings per share guidance of $1.00-1.07 as the company's lagging power business, price-cost pressures compounded by US-China tariffs, and behind-schedule deliveries of its LEAP engine weighed.

And on Monday, GE let all the bad news out. It announced a $23 billion goodwill charge for its power business, and said free cash flow and earnings estimates for fiscal-year 2018 will likely miss their targets.

Encouraged by the reveal, Dray raised his price target to $15 from $13 and upgraded the stock to "outperform."
