Politics: China's cult of personality got a whole lot weirder with a new millennial-themed quiz show devoted to leader Xi Jinping

A screenshot from an episode of "Socialism Is a Bit Cool: Studying Xi in the New Era."

One of China's largest entertainment TV networks debuted a new quiz show "intended to guide Party members and young students to better comprehend the new thoughts, and to embrace each new year."

China's cult of personality has gotten a whole lot weirder with the debut of a new millennial-themed quiz show devoted to the life and teachings of president and "paramount leader" Xi Jinping.

One of China's largest entertainment TV networks aimed at millennials, Hunan TV, launched the quiz program called "Socialism Is a Bit Cool: Studying Xi in the New Era," which asks contestants to answer questions focused on Xi, his upbringing, and his personal philosophies.

The show comes as Xi has slowly been cementing his grip on power over China, cracking down on his political opponents and silencing dissent using strict censorship online.

Xi's name and teachings, called "Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era" have been enshrined in the country's constitution, and he has eliminated presidential term limits, effectively allowing him to rule over the nation indefinitely.

Xi now holds the most senior titles, simultaneously, of any leader in China's modern history, and his status as the Party's "core leader" evokes deep, almost spiritual admiration from citizens.

Still, the show faced major backlash on social media. On the microblogging platform Weibo, one user wrote that they were being "baptized" by the program's propaganda, according to Sixth Tone.

The show starts off with a bizarre title sequence — in space …

The five-episode series features contestants from the country's top universities, who answer multiple-choice questions in front of a studio audience of about 100 people.

… with clips of Xi's past speeches thrown into the mix.

The show follows Xi's previous calls for a "massive study" of Communist Party ideals.

The show features a humanoid robot who explains the rules and tries to stump contestants with questions.

There's a female announcer who interacts with her robot co-host.

China's state-run media says the show is supposed to be palatable to a younger audience.

"Through television and new media, this program is intended to guide Party members and young students to better comprehend the new thoughts, and to embrace each new year."

And a panel of experts, including university professors, provide extra insight into Xi's teachings.

The show includes speeches and interviews featuring Xi, referred to as "golden quotes," and players are asked to finish his sentences.

Participants are asked a wide range of questions about Xi and Communist teachings.

Contestants were also asked about Xi's upbringing, like this one: "When Xi was sent 'down to the countryside' of Shaanxi province as an educated youth during the Cultural Revolution, what book did he walk 15 kilometers to borrow?

Source: Sixth Tone

A digital version of Karl Marx made a guest appearance.

In the first episode, players were asked to finish quotes from the Communist Manifesto.

Videos glorifying Xi were the basis of many questions.

In a second segment of the show, participants were asked to interpret the meaning and inspiration behind some of Xi's most famous anecdotes.

The top two contestants make it to the final round of the competition …

… but there's no grand prize for the winner at the end of the show.

Rather, contestants and the studio audience get to show off their knowledge of communist principles and participate in a propaganda program neatly packaged as a game show.

Films We Are Excited About This Weekend

The weekend is upon us and if you are still wondering what movies to keep you entertained, we have got you covered. From the duo of Kevin Hart and Tiffany Haddish giving us something to laugh about in “Night School” to Lady Gaga starring in her biggest movie yet in “A Star Is Born” not to mention the Spiderman spinoff, “Venom”.

Below are the list of movies you should add to your watchlist and why we are so excited about them.

Night School | ELI-JOSHUA-ADE-UNIVERSAL-PICTURES

Night School

Release date: September 28

Cast: Kevin Hart, Tiffany Haddish, Rob Riggle, Yvonne Orji

Directed by: Malcolm D. Lee (Girls Trip)

Why we are excited: Following the success of last year’s box office dominating summer hit Girls Trip, award-winning comedian Tiffany Haddish is back on the big screen with Night School. She plays the character of a teacher charged with helping a high-school dropout (Kevin Hart) get his GED. The fact that we will get to see two stand-up stars at the peak of their powers play off each other in a movie like this makes it a must see.

A Star Is Born | IMDb

A Star Is Born

Release date: October 5

Cast: Bradley Cooper, Lady Gaga, Sam Elliott, Dave Chappelle

Directed by: Bradley Cooper

Why we are excited: This will be the fourth retelling of this iconic mash-up of fame, showbiz, and romance. A Star Is Born has a modern-day update, with Bradley Cooper playing the hard-living male lead and handling directing duties. Grammy award winning songstress, Lady Gaga plays a young singer with a big voice, who will likely be the draw for many moviegoers. You might want to hold a handkerchief to wipe away the tears if reviews out of the Venice Film Festival are anything to go by.

Venom | Sony Pictures

Venom

Release date: October 5

Cast: Tom Hardy, Michelle Williams, Riz Ahmed, Woody Harrelson

Directed by: Ruben Fleischer (Gangster Squad)

Why we are excited: The early trailers for this movie has it as a long-rumored Spider-Man spinoff about investigative journalist Eddie Brock (Hardy) being infected by an inky substance from space and going crazy in the process. Even if this is a disaster, it will likely be stranger than some of the more streamlined superhero products released in recent years.

Guy Smarts: Try her move if you have a stiff neck and shoulders

Atkins recommends that anyone with tight shoulders or a stiff neck – which counts just about everyone who sits hunched over at a desk all day – should take 5 minutes before and after their sweat sessions to work out the kinks with this upper back/neck release move.

Before you hit the gym for your next upper body workout, take a tip from trainer Charlee Atkins, C.S.C.S., to get your upper back and neck ready for the weights.

Atkins recommends that anyone with tight shoulders or a stiff neck – which counts just about everyone who sits hunched over at a desk all day – should take 5 minutes before and after their sweat sessions to work out the kinks with this upper back/neck release move.

"Soft tissue mobilization or SMR (self-myofascial release) is something you can do on your own before or after a workout to help relieve tension or discomfort in the area of upper trapezius or levator scapulae muscle," Atkins says.

Getting the proper prep work in won't just help you feel better, according to Atkins – it can help to prevent injuries, too.

To perform the move, you'll need a myofascial release ball. If you don't have one, check out this set, or just use a tennis ball or lacrosse ball.

 • Lay down on your back with your knees bent.

 • Place ball in your trap muscle, between your shoulder blade and spine.

 • Bring hands down by hips and then elevate hips up into bridge position.

 • Move your arm through abduction (snow angel movement).

 • Move your arm through flexion (hail a cab or raise your hand).

 • Take your arm across body towards opposite hip.

Perform this series of movements before and after your next upper body workout for 5 minutes. Your back and shoulders will thank you, especially once you get back to the desk.

Fujimori, in hospital plea, says return to prison would be 'death sentence'

Policemen stand guard outside the Centenario Clinic in Lima on October 4, 2018, where former Peruvian president (1990-2000) Alberto Fujimori was admitted on October 3 after a court annulled the humanitarian pardon granted to him and ordered the 80-year-old ex-presidentís immediate arrest.
The former president who has chronic health problems, such as hypertension and cardiac arrhythmia, received a humanitarian pardon in December 2017 by then-President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski after twelve years in prison, where he was serving a 25-year sentence for crimes against humanity during his rule. / AFP PHOTO / CRIS BOURONCLE

Peru’s ex-president Alberto Fujimori said from his hospital bed Thursday that a return to prison would be a “death sentence,” the day after a court revoked a pardon for crimes against humanity.

Fujimori, 80, addressed a plea to Peru’s President Martin Vizcarra and the South American country’s judiciary in a video recorded at his bedside.

“Please do not kill me. If I return to prison my heart will not support it. It is too weak to go through the same thing again. Don’t sentence me to death. I can give no more.”

A court on Wednesday annulled a presidential pardon for Fujimori, ending more than nine months of freedom granted under the shock pardon issued by a previous president in December.

However, immediately after his re-arrest Fujimori was admitted to a clinic with heart problems.

His doctor, Alejandro Aguinaga, told reporters he experienced a drop in blood pressure and an accelerated heart beat — the same problems for which he has been hospitalized in the past.

“He is already considered a prisoner,” Interior Minister Mauro Medina told Chile’s RPP radio.

“He is expected to leave the clinic to take him to the penitentiary,” the minister said.

Fujimori, a Peruvian of Japanese descent, has been living in Lima but has been hospitalized four times since his release last December.

His daughter Keiko Fujimori, leader of the main opposition Popular Force party, described the court’s decision on Wednesday as “inhuman” and “unjust”.

“Today is the saddest day of our lives. It’s painful,” said Keiko, who is seen by many Peruvians as the heir to Fujimori’s political dynasty.

– Questionable pardon –
Fujimori was pardoned last December on humanitarian grounds, but critics said the move was in exchange for Fujimori’s son helping then-president Pedro Pablo Kuczynski avoid impeachment.

Fujimori was 12 years into a 25-year jail sentence handed down for ordering two massacres by death squads between 1991 and 1992.

He had ruled Peru with an iron fist between 1990 and 2000.

Victims of Fujimori’s crackdown had petitioned the Inter-American Court to demand a judicial review of the process that led to the pardon.

The charge of crimes against humanity stemmed in part from the killings or disappearances of scores of civilians — allegedly by a shadowy squad of military officers — during Peru’s bloody struggle against Maoist rebels.

The ex-ruler is revered and despised in equal measure in Peru.

Admirers laud him for dragging the country’s economy into the modern era and defeating the Shining Path guerrilla movement.

The Naira on Thursday appreciated marginally against the dollar at the Investors’ Window (I & E), exchanging at N363. 57, stronger than N363.94 posted on Wednesday.

The daily market turnover stood at 392.9 million dollars. The Nigerian currency closed at N306.40 to the dollar at the official CBN window.

At the parallel market, the Naira closed at N359 to the dollar, while the Pound Sterling and the Euro closed at N478.30 and N420.

Trading at the Bureau De Change(BDC) segment saw the Naira close at N360 to the dollar, while the Pound Sterling and the Euro closed at N478.30 and N420.

Meanwhile, in spite of the continuous intervention by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) at the foreign exchange market and the increase in the price of oil at the international market, the manufacturing sector witnessed slow growth in the month of September.

The manufacturing sector continued to expand in September, though at a slower pace, the latest CBN Manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) report, shows.

It showed that the September Manufacturing PMI eased to 56.2 from 57.1 in August, indicating expansion in the manufacturing sector for the 18th consecutive month.

The report noted that “a composite PMI above 50 points indicates that the manufacturing/non-manufacturing economy is generally expanding, 50 points indicates no change and below 50 points indicates that it is generally contracting.

Key facts about world's chemical watchdog

This handout document released on October 4, 2018 by the Dutch Defence Ministry shows alleged Russian agents on a parking lot near the OPCW in The Hague in April during the intervention of Dutch officers as Dutch security services said on October 4 they had thwarted a Russian cyber attack on the global chemical weapons watchdog, as Western powers blamed Moscow for some of the biggest hacking plots of recent years.
The Netherlands expelled four alleged Russian agents in April after uncovering a spy-novel-style bid by Russia's GRU military intelligence agency to target the Organisation for Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) in The Hague. The allegation came hours after Britain and Australia separately blamed the GRU for some major hacking plots including the US Democratic Party and world sport's anti-Doping authority. / AFP PHOTO / DUTCH DEFENSE MINISTRY / HO /

The Netherlands said on Thursday it had expelled four Russians over a bungled plot to hack into the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW).

Here are the key details about the world’s chemical weapons watchdog:

– What is the OPCW? –
Founded in 1997, the OPCW based in The Hague oversees the application of The Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) aimed at ridding the world of toxic arms.

Chemical weapons, such as mustard gas, were first used in combat on the battlefields of World War I, and also in 1988 by Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein against civilians in Halabja, Iraq.

After almost 20 years of negotiations, the convention took effect on April 29, 1997. The OPCW now has 193 member nations.

– What has it done? –
The OPCW says over 96 percent of all declared chemical weapon stockpiles have been destroyed under its verification programme.

It won the 2013 Nobel Peace Prize for its efforts.

Russia and the United States are on target to destroy their stockpiles within the next six years.

Only four nations have not yet signed up to the convention — Egypt, Israel, North Korea and South Sudan.

– What is its role the Skripal probe? –
Britain asked the OPCW for “technical assistance” in the investigation into the poisoning of Russian double agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia in Salisbury in March 2018.

The OPCW said it confirmed Britain’s findings — which were that they were poisoned by Novichok, a military-grade nerve agent developed by the Soviet Union during the Cold War.

The watchdog also confirmed Novichok was responsible for the poisoning of a British couple in Amesbury, near Salisbury, in July.

– What is its role in Syria? –
The Syrian regime caved to years of international pressure in September 2013 and agreed under a US-Russia deal to hand over its toxic stockpile to the OPCW for destruction, averting threatened US air strikes.

The admission came after a sarin gas attack in August 2013 on rebel-held areas near Damascus that was blamed by the West and the opposition on the regime. An estimated 1,000 people died.

The OPCW says 100 percent of Syria’s declared chemical arms — a total of 1,300 metric tonnes — was handed over and destroyed by January 2016.
