In Zamfara: Police pledge adequate security

Ekiti Governorship Election: Security agencies to jointly deploy 30,000 personnel

According to a statement signed by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Mohammed Shehu, and made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the command would ensure a serene environment before, during and after the All Progressives Congress (APC) primaries in the state.

The Police Command in Zamfara has assured residents of the state that it would provide adequate security to lives and property throughout the ongoing political activities in the area.

According to a statement signed by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Mohammed Shehu, and made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the command would ensure a serene environment before, during and after the All Progressives Congress (APC) primaries in the state.

NAN reports that the APC governorship primaries in the state had been shifted several times as the party was factionalised with seven aspirants including the incumbent Deputy Governor, Malam Ibrahim Wakkala, opposing Gov. Abdul’Aziz Yari’s decision to anoint the party’s flag bearer.

This, the aspirants said, was against popular decision and not in conformity with the party’s principles.

In its response to the crisis, the national headquarters of the party dissolved the party’s executives  in the state and ordered the conduct of the primary election.

It said that the dissolved executive and the state governor must not have a hand in the exercise.

This decision was rejected by the governor who announced at a press briefing that he would not guarantee the safety of the national officials of the party headed by Dr Abubakar Fari, sent to conduct the primary election in the state.

The governor also directed his supporters to storm the state police command and peacefully protest against the decision of the party’s National Secretariat until the an agreement on an acceptable way to conduct the election was finalised and agreed upon.

The, police however, warned that anyone caught taking the law into his or her own hands would face the full wrath of the law.

Meanwhile, Wakkala has urged his supporters to remain calm and, saying that the primary election must hold as directed by the party’s National Headquarters.

In a statement signed by his Director-General of Media, Yusuf Idris, the deputy governor alleged that the crisis facing the party was the result of unfair treatment meted out to them by the governor.

“Once everyone is treated fairly, there will be no problem, anymore, because we have always been one big family, he said.

Pompeo eyes progress over Trump-Kim summit on Asia trip

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said he hoped to accelerate a second summit between Kim Jong Un and Donald Trump as he kicked off an Asian trip Saturday that will feature a meeting with North Korea’s leader.

Pompeo arrived in Tokyo on the first leg of a tour that will take him to Pyongyang for a fourth time as the contours of a possibly historic US-North Korea deal take shape.

Speaking on the plane on the way from the United States, Pompeo said his aim was to “develop sufficient trust” between the historic foes to inch towards peace.

“Then we are also going to set up the next summit,” said Pompeo.

However, he played down expectations for a major breakthrough, saying: “I doubt we will get it nailed but begin to develop options for both location and timing for when Chairman Kim will meet with the president again.”

“Maybe we will get further than that.”

In June, Trump met Kim in Singapore in the first-ever summit between the countries.

No sitting US president has visited North Korea, which according to human rights groups remains one of the most repressive countries on Earth.

Since the Singapore summit, which yielded what critics charge was only a vague commitment by Kim towards denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula, the road towards better ties has been bumpy.

Trump scrapped a previously planned trip by his top diplomat to Pyongyang after what he said was insufficient progress towards implementing the terms of the Singapore declaration.

But the unorthodox US president has since declared himself “in love” with the strongman in Pyongyang.

Pompeo has repeatedly declined to be drawn publicly on the shape of an eventual agreement. The United States has called for a comprehensive accord and strict enforcement of sanctions on North Korea in the meantime.

‘Grand bargain’
Pompeo kicked off his trip with talks in Tokyo with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Foreign Minister Taro Kono.

Japan, which has seen North Korean missiles fly over its territory and been threatened with annihilation, has historically taken a hard line on Pyongyang and stressed the need to maintain pressure on the regime.

More recently, however, Abe has said the only way to improve strained ties is a face-to-face meeting with former international pariah Kim.

Speaking ahead of his talks, Pompeo said it was important for him before travelling to Pyongyang that the two allies were “fully in sync.”

He said he would bring up with Kim the issue of Japanese citizens abducted by North Korea decades ago, which is a huge issue domestically in Japan.

Abe called for “coordination” on this issue and also on North Korea’s nuclear threat.

After Tokyo, Pompeo travels to Pyongyang and then on to South Korea, whose dovish president Moon Jae-in has served as a go-between for the two sides.

South Korean Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha has given a hint of what a grand bargain between the two countries could look like.

In an interview with the Washington Post, she said the North could agree to dismantle Yongbyon, its signature nuclear site.

In exchange, the United States would declare a formal end to the 1950-53 Korean War — which concluded with an armistice rather than a full-blown peace treaty — but North Korea would stop short of delivering an exhaustive list of its nuclear facilities, she said.

Pompeo did not discuss the possible outlines of a deal, saying only that his “mission is to make sure that we understand what each side is truly trying to achieve.”

After Seoul, Pompeo closes his trip Monday in China, North Korea’s political and economic lifeline.

The Beijing stop could be tense as it comes days after Vice President Mike Pence delivered a blistering speech accusing China of military aggression, commercial theft, rising human rights violations and electoral intervention against Trump.

Ronaldo is more than a footballer, he's a multi-national business

(FILES) In this file photo taken on September 29, 2018 Juventus' Portuguese forward Cristiano Ronaldo reacts during the Italian Serie A football match Juventus vs Napoli at the Juventus stadium in Turin. Cristiano Ronaldo is "doing well" and will be "ready to play" this weekend, despite being caught in the storm of rape allegations, Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri said on October 5, 2018. With huge revenues, a colossal audience on social media, sponsors queuing up, and his brand on products from hotels to underwear, Cristiano Ronaldo has long been more than just a football player.

But CR7’s global brand may be tarnished by an accusation of rape in the United States, a complaint that dates back to 2009.

Ronaldo, “is truly a business offering a product, a service and a digital arm,” Jean-Philippe Danglade, author of “Marketing and Celebrities”, told AFP, pointing out that, in the player’s native Madeira there is a Ronaldo museum and airport named after him.

“In terms of the collective imagination, it’s really impressive.”

Forbes magazine estimated that Ronaldo made $108 million (93.7 million euros) in 2017: $61 million in salary and $47 million from endorsements. While that’s a jump in $15 million from the previous year, Ronaldo still dropped from first place to third.

Ronaldo’s great rival Lionel Messi moved to second, on $111 million, after signing a new contract at Barcelona that increased his salary from an estimated $50 million a year to a reported $86 million.

Boxer Floyd Mayweather soared into first place with $275 million, almost all of which came from a single bout against mixed martial arts fighter Conor McGregor.

At 33, Ronaldo reportedly accepted a slight wage cut in the summer when he moved from Real Madrid to Juventus, signing a contract worth a reported 30-31 million euros a year after tax.

Forbes calculated that this represents a drop in gross salary from the $66 million he would have earned, with bonuses, at Real, to $64 million at Juventus, where his contract reportedly includes no incentives and is entirely guaranteed.

Tax is another sensitive topic for Ronaldo, who agreed in June to pay 16.7 million euros in a legal settlement after he was caught neglecting to pay some Spanish taxes.

Beckham and Jordan
Ronaldo outstrips Messi in sponsorhip, but the accusations against him have already made his main client anxious. His strongest links are with Nike, where he is in a “long-term-partnership.”

He has made his name a logo — ‘CR7’ — following the “jumpman” concept created by Nike in the late 1980S with another long-term partner Michael Jordan.

It is a template that has also worked for former Nike client Roger Federer, who is the top sponsorship earner on the Forbes list, and David Beckham.

Since the opening of his first underwear shop “CR7” in 2006 on Madeira, the man with perfect abs, who models his briefs in ads, has expanded the range with jeans, shoes and accessories.

At the end of 2015, he joined the hotel group Pestana to build five hotels (a sixth is planned in Paris) under the name “CR7”.

On arriving in Turin this summer, Ronaldo launched a new “CR7 Underwear” line with Italian garment company Yamamay.

“Because I’m rich, I’m beautiful, I’m a great player, people are jealous of me,” Ronaldo said in 2011.

For the sponsors, the five-time Ballon d’Or and top scorer in Champions League history, with 120 goals (and counting), is an attractive brand.

His 330 million total social media followers, more than any other sportsman, also helps draw sponsors.

Among his blue-chip backers have included French telecommunications company SFR, Swiss watchmaker Tag Heuer, game makers Konami and EA Sports, oil manufacturer Castrol and Emirates airline.

“His portfolio is very well-balanced with a dozen sectors and very different and complementary activities,” said Danglade.

But Ronaldo makes at least 20 million euros a year, and, perhaps much more, from his deal with Nike, which began in 2003.

CR7 has said this partnership “is for life”.

“I am a member of this family,” said the Portuguese in a Nike video. “It’s the best deal I’ve had in my career.”

Nike seems suddenly less in love.

“We are deeply concerned by the disturbing allegations and will continue to closely monitor the situation,” a Nike spokesman told AFP.

Ronaldo is busy on social media and assiduous in promoting his main sponsor. Forbes counted 580 tweets in 2016 with a sponsor mention or logo, although as Forbes also pointed out, most photos of CR7 playing for Real Madrid also contained the logo of the club sponsor, Adidas.

Forbes calculates that the Ronaldo is way ahead of and the more reticent Messi, who is with Nike’s eternal rival Adidas, in generating money for sponsors from social networks, saying that in 2016 Ronaldo was worth $500 million to Nike on social media and Messi $53.3 million for Adidas.

Buhari: Unpaid Salaries: My heart is with you, President tells teachers

President Muhammadu Buhari's party has seen a wave of defections in protest at his leadership style and a surge in opposition PDP contenders that could give it momentum

The President’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, in a statement in Abuja on Friday, said Buhari gave the assurance in a message to this year’s World Teachers’ Day.

President Muhammadu Buhari has assured Nigeria’s Teachers that his heart is with them over the issue of unpaid salaries, assuring that unpaid salaries would soon become an issue of the past.

The President’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, in a statement in Abuja on Friday, said Buhari gave the assurance in a message to this year’s World Teachers’ Day.

The President disclosed that he was aware that in some states and local councils of the federation, teachers were being owed salaries of several months.

He revealed that it was specifically to mitigate the situation of unpaid teachers and pensioners that his administration doled out billions of naira as bailout funds to various states.

“Sadly, the issue of unpaid salaries remains,’’ he lamented.

Buhari, however, assured that the Federal Government would continue to work with the state governments to ensure that “all salary arrears are not just cleared, but that unpaid salaries become an issue of the past.’’

The President used the opportunity of this year’s World Teachers’ Day to express his appreciation to all Nigeria’s teachers, “the usually unsung heroes of our country whose skill and commitment daily mould the minds of our country’s youth, our leaders of today and tomorrow.’’

While highlighting some of the measures put in place by his administration to improve education and better the welfare of teachers, Buhari regretted as “grave and unfortunate that the country’s teachers were often treated unfairly despite their essential services.

According to him, Teachers are the most important segment of workers in the country, invaluable for the essential work they do towards building the country’s future.

He said: “Teaching is a noble profession, wielding a strong influence by inspiring and educating our children. The values they inculcate stay with them for a lifetime.’’

Did Major Lazer Boycott Wizkid? Some Guests Were Unhappy After The Concert

Last night, popular three-member production and disc jockey group Major Lazer gave their first Nigerian headline performance in a festival-esque event dubbed ‘Major Lazer Soundsystem Live’ as part of their ongoing African tour which has taken them to South Africa and Malawi.

At exactly 12:45 am, the trio made an entrance, receiving praises from fans who had been waiting all night. The trio took turns on the turntable, stimulated guests and spun heads throughout their one-hour set,  performing a slew of local and international hits, mixing, bending, speeding up the pace and hyping fans all at the same time. Some Wizkid stans who were present at the event, however, took into account, the fact that no Wizkid record was slammed throughout their set.

As we all made our way out of the venue after the exhilarating show, an unhappy fan of the Starboy began to vent. “So Major Lazer get mind perform for Lagos without playing one Wizkid song. Asin, out of all those many many songs wey dem play, them no jam one Wizkid song (Translated from Pidgin: So Major Lazer had the gut to perform in Lagos without playing any Wizkid record. How could they have played so many songs without slamming at least one song by Wizkid)”, he lamented.

To better articulate his sentiment, how could the group have done a concert in Lagos that saw them perform an array of songs, featured and non-featured without playing at least a song by arguably Africa’s biggest pop star? Sort of like; how do you explain coming to Wizkid’s home without acknowledging him?

The disgruntled fan went on to express his displeasure over the fact that the Starboy also made no appearance at the event despite haven worked with the group in recent years. “Upon say Wizkid don do official song with them, they still no play him song”, he opined. On a song titled Naughty Ride off his 2017 Sounds From The Other Side album, Wizkid enlisted the contribution of the EDM group.

Also to the surprise of many, Nigerian international pop star, Skales was the only guest who got to share the stage with the EDM group, performing a verse from his African remix of their 2017 smash hit ‘Run Up’.

Major Lazer has recently dropped three singles (Tied Up ft Mr Eazi, Loyal ft Kizz Daniel and All My Life ft Burna Boy) and a number of guests came hoping to see a guest performance from one of their recent Nigerian collaborators. The absence of guest performances is proof that the EDM group came to deliver a ‘Major Lazer Experience’ and this was well executed.
