Lacazette, Ramsey star as rampant Arsenal make it nine in a row

Arsenal's Welsh midfielder Aaron Ramsey celebrates with teammtes after scoring the team's third goal during the English Premier League football match between Fulham and Arsenal at Craven Cottage in London on October 7, 2018. Adrian DENNIS / AFP

Arsenal swaggered to a ninth successive win as Alexandre Lacazette’s double and a goal of the season contender from Aaron Ramsey inspired a 5-1 rout of Fulham on Sunday.

Unai Emery’s side turned on the style on the banks of the River Thames, recording their biggest win of the season as the resurgent Gunners moved into the Premier League’s top four.

Lacazette was at the centre of Arsenal’s powerful show at Craven Cottage, with his superb second-half strike restoring their lead after Andre Schurrle had cancelled out his opener.Ramsey’s audacious back-heeled goal put Arsenal in complete control to cap a stunning move that recalled the club’s finest days under Emery’s predecessor Arsene Wenger.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang netted twice in the closing stages as Arsenal won six consecutive league matches within a single campaign for the first time since 2016.

They have also recorded three consecutive away league victories for the first time in two years.

Emery was expected to need a long period to revive Arsenal after the depressing final years of the Wenger era.

But the north Londoners are quickly rediscovering their verve and struggling Fulham had no answer to their enterprising display.

Arsenal were battling fatigue after touching down in London in the early hours of Friday morning following a 4,000km flight from Azerbaijan, where they beat Qarabag 3-0 in the Europa League on Thursday.

But Emery freshened up his side with six changes, although one was enforced as Mesut Ozil was sidelined due to a back spasm, and there were no signs of fatigue as they took the lead in the 29th minute.

Alex Iwobi was the catalyst with a clever pass to Nacho Monreal.

Monreal clipped his cross into Lacazette and the French striker left Tim Ream flat-footed with a nimble turn and close-range strike for his fourth goal of the season.

Fulham are the only side in the Premier League yet to keep a clean sheet this season and it was easy to see why as Arsenal carved holes in the hosts’ creaky five-man defence.

Arsenal were close to a second goal as they again exploited the space behind wing-back Cyrus Christie, with Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s effort well saved by Marcus Bettinelli.

Inspired move
Fulham hit back against the run of play in the 44th minute.

Unhinged by Monreal’s wasteful pass, Arsenal were out of position as Luciano Vietto slipped a pin-point pass to Schurrle, who caught Rob Holding ball-watching as he sprinted through to chip a fine finish over Bernd Leno for his third goal this season.

Undeterred, Arsenal stepped on the gas after the interval and Lacazette restored their lead in the 49th minute.

Danny Welbeck headed onto Lacazette and he took Bettinelli by surprise with a powerful 20-yard drive that flashed past the newly called-up England keeper.

Aubameyang and Ramsey had both been left on the bench, but Emery introduced them for the final half hour in a bid to kill off Fulham.

It proved an inspired move as Ramsey sealed the points with a majestic finish in the 67th minute.

A flowing attack saw Hector Bellerin and Ramsey combined in a blur of flicks and delicate touches in midfield before the ball was worked wide to Aubameyang.

Aubameyang whipped over a low cross that was slightly behind Ramsey, prompting a superb adjustment from the Wales midfielder as he guided a back-flicked shot into the far corner.

Aubameyang put the seal on Arsenal’s stroll in the autumn sunshine in the 79th minute, deftly converting Bellerin’s cross.

The Gabon striker wasn’t finished yet and, in the last minute, he smashed in Ramsey’s pass for his sixth goal of the season. No wonder jubilant Gunners crammed into one corner of Craven Cottage celebrated the goal with chants of “We’ve got our Arsenal back”.

“I am the 16th President of Nigeria” | 7 things we learned from Tunde Bakare’s State of the Nation Address

Every year, the founder and Senior Pastor of the Latter Rain Assembly Tunde Bakare, delivers a rousing ‘State of the Nation Address’ that is meant to act as a roadmap for the country. Today, the pastor and politician had some interesting things to say during his 2018 address titled ‘The Road to 2019 Covadis Nigeria’ and these are the 7 things we learned:

1 Expect these two major things to happen in Nigeria going forward

The good Pastor asked us to hold him accountable for the following:

  • A company of deliverers will be raised East, west, north and south that will work together and bring about the total liberation and deliverance of Nigeria.
  • The moment the deliverers are raised, Social mobility will no longer be frozen, our people will become empowered and the voice of the voiceless will be restored and Nigerians will hold their own sovereignty destiny in their hands.

2. PDP had already selected their presidential candidate yesterday

(“Intrigue”, “Politricks” and “Politrocrazy”)

Pastor Tunde revealed that the People’s Democratic Party texted him the name of the candidate they had decided should represent them at the polls come 2019 by 11.30 pm last night. Guess that was Atiku, going by the eventual results.

3. INEC election in Osun state was a total sham and shame

Tunde Bakare bashed the country’s electoral body for what he called Osun state’s “selection”.

“By what constitutional provision or Act of the National Assembly did the independent electoral body cancel elections in Osun,” Bakare asked. “Did we have a rerun or a test run?” He further inquired. Pastor Bakare referred to section 53 subsection 2 of the Electoral Act (as amended) which empowers INEC to cancel votes. According to the Act, overvoting is the only legal ground upon which INEC is empowered to cancel results.

Pastor Bakare reeled out the stats.

“Since the return to civilian rule, INEC has spent 450 billion Naira on 5 general elections and bye-elections and in fact, 143 billion Naira is billed for the 2019 elections yet Nigeria continues to suffer a staggering leadership deficit despite the cycle of expensive elections.”

5 elections yet around 87 million of us are extremely poor earning our country “the poverty capital of the world”. 5 elections yet more than 37, 500 lives have been claimed by Boko Haram menace, 2.4 million of us are internally displaced, more than 28,000 are refugees and 7.7 million of us require urgent humanitarian assistance. 5 elections yet 6 million infants suffer malnutrition and 13 million children are still out of school. 5 elections yet our country has one of the worst infrastructural deficits in the world and our most of our states are economic vegetables relying on Abuja for life.

5 elections and our paradoxical underdevelopment continue to confound the world.

4. Nigeria will be great

(Welcome to SUG rally, take 2)

If you’d strolled into Church at this time, you’d have thought you had missed your way into an SUG convention. Men were shouting and throwing fists in the air, moved by Pastor Tunde’s words.

“We are better than this. We are better than the retrogressive pace of one step forward, two steps backwards. We are better than this sorry state of poverty. We are not beggars, failures, a burden to the world. We are the hope of Africa. Destined to give the world civilization that will astonish humanity. We are Nigerians!

Great Nigerian people!

We must be ready to reject who we are not. Ready to afford who we are. To do so we must interact the process, ponder our progress so far, tell ourselves some home truths and commence the work of correcting the defects.”

Oh, and by the way, We’re running on a new cock

It’s time to take over!

“It is time to say no to a defective system that stifles our potential as a people; time to say no to a system that throws up the worst of us for leadership. It’s time to say no to a system that brings out the worst in the best of us in leadership. It is time to say no to a defective system that only breeds defectors… It is time to make the right choices.”

5. Nigeria needs to adopt a 7 point framework

(Is the federal government for Muslims alone?”)

Pastor Tunde put forward a 7 point framework to help “facilitate robust public discourse” on political choices in 2019, to “serve as a yardstick for interrogating the polity and challenge incumbents in their attempts to seeking reelection”.

They are as follows:

  • The mood
  • The man
  • The method
  • The medium
  • The moment
  • The mission
  • The mandate

Pastor Tunde asked Nigerians to interrogate the polity in the context of the mood -state, expectations, aspirations, anxieties, cries and agonies, of the Nigerian people. For instance, The despondency of cattle rearers in Zamfara, questions on the minds of Nigerians who wonder whether there is really religious freedom in a Nigeria where Leah Sharing is still being held captive for her faith while her mates were released six months ago.

On the matter of “the man”, he advised Nigerians to interrogate the kind of person we select to lead us. He listed the kind of leaders we shouldn’t select and they include those who make opportunistic promises before elections they don’t plan on keeping; those who peddle “stomach infrastructure”; leaders who cannot face the Nigerian people in debate or have intelligent conversations on our national problems or tell us precisely what they will do to fix them.

He asked Nigerians to pick a new breed of leaders who tick heart, hand and head boxes on the leadership checklist; leaders who have the mental fortitude to navigate the complexities of our national realities to our complexities.

Critical questions

Do we pay attention to what happens at PDP primaries? What safeguards have we put in place to ensure the brightest emerge? What informs the endless cross carpeting- the same corrupt blood flows through the veins of these parties?

6. The 16 pragmatic steps to restructuring Nigeria

Pastor Tunde put quite some thought into this idea of restructuring, advocating that it should run from 2019- 2027.

“I am convinced the idea whose time has come is the restructuring of our nation”, he said.

He advised that in 2019, the President should establish a presidential commission (PC) for reconciliation, reintegration and restructuring and the incorruptible Chairperson (who should be willing to serve without remuneration) of the presidential commission should devolve the PC into six zonal commission. Zonal commissions must be technocrats.

7. “I am running for President”

“At the beginning of this year, the spirit of God said to me politics is not over for you. There is still one thing left for you to do: Run for president. I will work it myself and make it happen in due course. Since then, people have read connotations into my declarations, a number have asked me to flag off my campaign, politicians from different parties have approached me with attractive offers. The gentlemen of the press have inquired as to whether I will run against the incumbent. My response has always been that I will not run against President Muhammed Buhari because I know he is number 15.

However on this day, October 7, 2019. I declare to you that I’m running. I am running for a united Nigeria… running to begin to start a conversation around the 7-point agenda….

But don’t get it mixed up.

I’m not running with my name on the ballot paper of any party. I am not running for any office in the 2019 elections. I am building a political family. I am the nationhood candidate and the 16th president of the Federal Government of Nigeria.

PDP: Our presidential primary, a lesson to INEC, APC

presidential primaryTHE Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has said that the orderliness, transparency and credibility of its Presidential primary serve as a direct lesson to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) on how elections should be conducted in present-day Nigeria.

In a statement released on Sunday moments after the conclusion of the Port Harcourt exercise, the party said that the process has shown that the electoral umpire, in its manifest compromises, has been responsible for the electoral crises at various levels of elections.

According to the main opposition party, it also shows that Nigerians, irrespective of their individual and group interests, are capable of holding peaceful and credible elections that meet global standards.

The statement signed by Kola Ologbondiyan, its National Publicity Secretary, states: “The success of our presidential primary followed our strict adherence to democratic rules and principles of transparency and fairness, which has eluded the nation since President Muhammadu Buhari-led licentious administration assumed office. Simply put, in the PDP Presidential primary, every vote counted.

ALSO READ: PDP National Convention: David Mark solicits for delegates’ supports

“Nigerians are therefore no longer in doubt that our compromised electoral umpire, under the Buhari administration, is ostensibly culpable for injecting rancorous situations that create openings for violence, manipulations, inconclusive polls and outright rigging of elections.

The PDP invited the whole world to note that they conducted its Presidential primary and a clear winner, Atiku Abubakar, emerged, without any form of disagreements or reliance on heavy security, showing that Nigerians are peaceful, orderly and desirous of credible processes at all levels of political engagement.

The PDP, therefore, charged INEC to stop blaming voters, accept responsibility for its failure to conduct credible elections and learn from our presidential primary, as we approach the 2019 general elections.

The party restated its determination to dismantle APC’s rigging machinery and return credible processes in all spheres of our national life.

Reality star Teddy A says he will only act nude if the price is right

Reality TV star Teddy A has been making splashes in the world of pop culture since being a contestant on Big Brother Naija‘s third season. Siphoning such fame towards rebirthing his sketchy career in music, and making his Nollywood debut in the forthcoming Ifan Michael star-studded movie Foreigner’s God. Beyond that, though, his time on the reality show was spelled around an alpha-male swagger and a self-awareness of his sexuality.

RELATED: At this point we should all be more informed about sexual violence in Nigeria

He might not have taken off his shirt as many times as fellow BBN alum Tobi Bakre but, in the pool of available male specimens, he was certainly eye-candy material which reached an audience pay-off via the famed toilet sex with housemate and now-girlfriend BamBam. All things considered, it’s perhaps no surprise that the 30-year-old is agreeable to acting nude in a movie, which he made known in a recent interview with Punch and headlined as catnip for Teddy A junkies.

But the caveat: Teddy A won’t show his assets for free. “How much are they paying me? There have to be criteria. There has to be money on the ground. You do not need to worry about the money involved, bring the script.â€ Teddy A’s Instagram is drenched with the unmistakable bad boy aura that was harnessed in the Big Brother Naija house, ever so trapped with an air of braggadocio and celebrity and an entry point for fans of the opposite sex with their flirtatious comments.

“The way I cope with my female fans is by just seeing them as fans and that is the only way you can do it, Teddy A revealed on fan relationship, “You never really let fame get into your head because the same people that are talking about me now were not talking this way about four years ago.

From the 2018 class of the BBN reality competition, Teddy A is visibly among those affecting the culture on their own creative paths. But we might never how much is the right price to see the reality star in his birthday suit.

Boko Haram: UN urges more support for Nigeria

Abubakar Shekau -- seen here in a video released in January -- is rumoured to be suffering from serious health problems

UN Development Programme (UNDP) Administrator Achim Steiner and UN Emergency Relief Coordinator Mark Lowcock made the call as they wrapped up a two-day official visit to Nigeria.

Top United Nations relief and development officials have called on national and international partners to step up support for humanitarian efforts in Northeastern Nigeria ravaged by Boko Haram’s insurgency.

UN Development Programme (UNDP) Administrator Achim Steiner and UN Emergency Relief Coordinator Mark Lowcock made the call as they wrapped up a two-day official visit to Nigeria.

Steiner and Lowcock were in Nigeria to rally support for the government-led efforts on the ground, especially in the conflict-torn northeastern Nigerian states of Borno, Adamawa and Yobe.

The top UN relief officials stressed the need to help millions of people rebuild their lives in the region that has been ravaged by the near decade-long insurgency.

“We are committed to Nigeria and to the people of Nigeria, said Lowcock, who heads up the UN Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).

“Humanitarian aid can only be a temporary solution, he said, adding he was pleased to visit the region alongside the UNDP Administrator.

He said their visit would help join up humanitarian and development efforts “to save lives, help stabilise the situation, rebuild lives and communities for the future.

“We must do everything we can to prevent this crisis from continuing for years, Lowcock said in Maiduguri at the end of the visit, which also included meetings with Minister of Finance Zainab Ahmad and high-level government officials.

They visited projects in Bama town and Ngwom community in Borno, the state most affected by the 10-year conflict, where humanitarian and development workers are providing life-saving assistance and implementing development programmes.

The two officials heard first-hand testimonies from people affected by the Lake Chad Basin crisis who are trying to rebuild their lives.

Steiner said: “We have a unique opportunity to make a real difference to communities across the northeast of Nigeria.

“Helping people affected by the crisis requires us to work together – humanitarian and development organisations alike – to tackle immediate humanitarian needs and the root causes of the crisis.

The Nigerian Government has launched recovery initiatives and efforts in northeast aimed at rapid stabilisation.

Early recovery and livelihood activities implemented by UN agencies and international and local NGOs seek to address the underlying causes of the conflict, lay the foundations for sustainable development and prevent aid dependency.

The humanitarian crisis in northeast has spilled over into the Lake Chad region, including Cameroon, Chad and Niger.

It remains one of the most severe in the world today with 7.7 million people in need of humanitarian assistance in the worst-affected states of Borno, Adamawa and Yobe alone.

According to OCHA, food security and the nutrition situation remains extremely fragile across the northeast, particularly given the high levels of aid dependency, compounded by the lack of access to land or other livelihood opportunities.

No fewer than three million people are estimated to suffer from critical food insecurity, and almost a million children aged from six months to five years are acutely malnourished, with 440,000 facing Severe Acute Malnutrition.

The visit follows an international donor conference held in Berlin in early September during which some $2.5 billion was pledged for humanitarian, stabilisation and recovery projects in the Lake Chad region.

Atiku takes early lead in PDP presidential primary

Former Vice president, Atiku Abubakar, has taken an early lead in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) primary in Port Harcourt.

He is keenly followed by Governor of Sokoto State, Aminu Tambuwal, who initially was tipped to win the primary due to the support he said to have received from his some of his colleagues.

The Guardian gathered that from the ballot papers sorted so far, Atiku Abubakar cleared the votes in Kwara, Lagos, Bayelsa, a seizable vote from Akwa Ibom. He was however said to have lost in Rivers State were the delegates votes one hundred percent for Governor Tambuwal.
