The Big 5: As APC NWC insists on Shehu Sani’s candidacy, Okorocha picks Senate ticket; Bakare wants Buhari to commence Nigeria’s restructuring | More stories

These are the stories you should be monitoring today:

The Presidency has dissociated President Muhammadu Buhari from a letter that purportedly authorised Governor Nasir el-Rufai to “deal with traitors and disloyal members of APC, especially Senator Shehu Sani, representing Kaduna Central,” while urging Nigerians to disregard the said directive which it said “is not in line with President Buhari’s character.â€

Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to the President, Garba Shehu, who made this known in a statement in Abuja on Sunday, stressed that the president is not aware of any such letter, let alone authorising anyone to deal with any party member.

“Given President Buhari’s record, it is inconceivable that he would usurp the role of the party leaders and instruct anyone to punish a party member,” the statement read.

The National Working Committee of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has reiterated his position that the Senator representing Kaduna Central, Shehu Sani remains its only senatorial candidate from Kaduna Central.

Acting National Publicity Secretary of the party, Yekini Nabena, who gave the clarification in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria(NAN) in Abuja on Sunday, stressed that Governor Nasir el-Rufai cannot dictate to the party.

“Yes election took place in that zone because of the House of Representatives and the State House of Assembly but for the senatorial position, the only candidate is Sen. Shehu Sani,” he said.

Convener of the Save Nigeria Group and Serving Overseer of Latter Rain Assembly, Pastor Tunde Bakare, on Sunday delivered his state of the nation address at his church in Lagos, where he called on President Muhammadu Buhari to urgently proclaim an executive order to facilitate national reconciliation, reintegration and restructuring.

Explaining that the executive order should be proclaimed in consultation with the National Assembly and the council of state, to establish a presidential commission to facilitate the restructuring, Bakare added that restructuring would return Nigeria to the winning formula of the past that facilitated the country’s socio-economic development.

“It is time to build systems that will serve the common good; structure that works for every Nigerian and a nation that caters for every citizen. It is time to make the right choices,’’ the former vice presidential candidate said.

Former Governor of Ondo, Dr Olusegun Mimiko, clinched the ticket of the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) on Sunday to emerge as its presidential candidate for the February 16 election.

Mimiko who was elected as a consensus candidate by members of the party in Abuja at its national convention, said his party will lead the process of renewing the Republic so as to afford every segment of the country the opportunity and privilege of development at its own pace, just as he urged members of the party not to be intimidated by the big parties, but concentrate on the size and weight of ZLP ideas.

Similarly, a former Chief Security Officer to the late Head of State, General Sani Abacha, Hamza Al-Mustapha, on Sunday, emerged as the presidential candidate of the Peoples Party of Nigeria (PPN) polling 3,564,262 votes to beat Dr Imuetinyan Igbinnosa and Chief Isiaka Olorunnimbe, who scored 2,183,856 and 1,400,755 votes, respectively.

Former Chief of Staff to Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo, Chief Uche Nwosu, has emerged as the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in the state, defeating other eight aspirants including the state Deputy Governor, Eze Madumere and the senator representing Imo West, Hope Uzodinma, who had earlier boycotted the exercise.

According to the results announced on Sunday, by the Chairman of the Imo APC Governorship Primary committee, Brig.-Gen. Ibrahim Agbakabia (rtd), who announced the results at the APC headquarters in Owerri, Nwosu polled 269,524 votes to defeat his closest rival, Chucks Ololo, who polled 6,428 votes as well as Uzodinma who had 2,729 votes, while Madumere scored 2,646 votes in the rescheduled governorship primary.

In same vein, Governor Okorocha was declared the APC senatorial candidate for Imo West Senatorial District, polling a total of 141,127 votes  to defeat incumbent Senator, Hope Uzodimma, who scored 1,359 votes and former National Organising Secretary of the party, Senator Osita Izunaso who got 24 votes.

And stories from around the world:

Far-right candidate, Jair Bolsonaro, has won the first round of Brazil’s presidential election, and will face the left-wing Workers’ Party candidate, Fernando Haddad, in the second round on 28 October after he failed to win the 50% of valid votes needed to win outright. (BBC)

The Chinese head of Interpol resigned as Beijing announced Monday he was under investigation for allegedly breaking domestic law, while his wife voiced concern for his life following his disappearance. (AFP)

20 killed in upstate New York limo horror

Twenty people have been killed after a limousine careened out of control in what investigators described Sunday as the most deadly transportation accident in the United States for nearly a decade.

All 18 occupants of the SUV-style stretch limo died along with two pedestrians on Saturday afternoon in upstate New York, police deputy superintendent Christopher Fiore told a news conference.

He said the 2001 Ford Excursion had failed to stop at an intersection and continued into a parking lot, ultimately crashing into a parked car. Investigators have not yet established if the victims were wearing seatbelts.

“Twenty fatalities is horrific… This is one of the biggest losses of lives that we have seen in a long, long time,” added National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) chairman Robert Sumwalt.

“This is the most deadly transportation accident in the country since February of 2009,” he added — referring to the Colgan Air Flight crash from New Jersey to New York, which killed 49.

Pictures posted on Twitter by Jesse McKinley, the Albany bureau chief for the New York Times, showed a hair brush and a fragment of tail light in the grass at the side of the road, in the aftermath. Deep muddy tire tracks disappeared into woodland beyond.

The tragedy unfolded outside the Apple Barrel Country Store and Cafe in the town of Schoharie, southwest of the state capital Albany and a three-hour drive north of New York City.

“That limo was coming down that hill probably over 60 mph… I don’t want to describe the scene. It’s not something I want to think about,” manager Jessica Kirby was quoted as saying.

The Columbus Day weekend is the busiest of the year for the store, Kirby told the paper, noting that it was full of customers from New York City, New Jersey and Albany at the time of the crash.

‘I heard some screaming’
A witness named by local media as Bill Waterson said the limousine was carrying a party on their way to a wedding reception, although this was not confirmed by police.

“This is terrible, terrible, terrible,” he told the Times Union.

“I heard some screaming. It looked serious because people were running back and forth,” a witness identified as Bridey Finegan told local NBC affiliate WNYT.

Road accidents are the fourth leading cause of injury related deaths in New York state, according to federal health statistics.

In 2014, the latest year with available figures, crashes on the state’s highways resulted in $808.1 million in hospitalization and emergency department charges, the Department of Health says on its website.

The Apple Barrel, a popular stop for tourists viewing fall foliage in the area, posted a message on its Facebook page lamenting the “horrific accident.”

It said it would be open for business on Sunday and “hope you will come and share your smiles, love, friendship and hugs with us.”

Girl Smarts: The 11 best low-carb beers you can buy

According to Jessica Perez, R.D., a typical 12-ounce serving of beer contains anywhere from seven to 14 grams of carbs.

The hardest time to cut carbs (okay, besides Thanksgiving) is def football season.

But while you're taking your burger off the bun and staring longingly at the stadium pretzels, know that there's one classic food you don't need to cut if you're watching your carb count: beer. uD83DuDE4F

According to Jessica Perez, R.D., a typical 12-ounce serving of beer contains anywhere from seven to 14 grams of carbs. But your standard low-carb beer (yes, those exist!) has no more than four grams.

You can usually tell a beer is going to be low-carb if it has the word "light" on the label. But Perez says you should still look for the specific carb count to be sure (many beers, especially light beers, will include it on the label)-especially if you’re sticking to a ketogenic diet. Thankfully, there are plenty of low-carb beers out there that fit the bill:

1. Budweiser Select 55

With a fraction of the calories of your standard beer, Select 55 offers a noticeably light caramel finish that will definitely quench your thirst.

Per serving: 55 cal, 0 g fat (0 g sat), 1.8 g carbs, 0 g sugar, 11 mg sodium, 0.5 g protein; 2.4% ABV.

2. Natural Light

"Natty Light," as its fondly known by its fans, offers enough of a crisp and fruity flavor to make you forget you’re carb-counting.

Per serving: 95 cal, 0 g fat (0 g sat), 3 g carbs, 0 g sugar, 10 mg sodium, 1 g protein; 4.2% ABV.

3. Genesee Light

Slightly citrus-y and easy to sip, “Genny lightens up their signature lager for a bloat-free buzz.

Per serving: 100 cal, 0 g fat (0 g sat), 4 g carbs, 0 g sugar, 0 mg sodium, 0 g protein; 3.6% ABV.

4. Michelob Ultra

Michelob’s light-bodied rendition gives you some hop flavor in their light beer without weighing you down.

Per serving: 95 cal, 0 g fat (0 g sat), 3 g carbs, 1 g sugar, 0 mg sodium, 0.6 g protein; 4.2% ABV.

5. Milwaukee's Best Light

Easy on the wallet and the palate, this classic brew is the perfect addition to a tailgate menu of wings, beer, and more beer.

Per serving: 96 cal, 0 g fat (0 g sat), 3 g carbs, 0 g sugar, 5 mg sodium, 0 g protein; 4.1% ABV.

6. Michelob Ultra Amber

Given that we first drink with our eyes, Michelob Ultra Amber’s deep mahogany tint offers the same appearance-and experience-of a more decadent brew.

Per serving: 95 cal, 0 g fat (0 g sat), 3 g carbs, 0 g sugar, 0 mg sodium, 1 g protein; 4.0% ABV.

7. Miller Lite

The company claims they are the first American light beer brand, and they certainly knew what they were doing when they perfected the signature blend of barley, rice, purely filtered water, and hops. It's a classic for a reason.

Per serving: 96 cal, 0 g fat (0 g sat), 3 g carbs, 1 g sugar, 5 mg sodium, 0 g protein; 4.2% ABV.

8. Corona Premier

Corona has become synonymous with #gametime, and now you get its signature honey-forward hops at a fraction of the carbs. Don’t forget that mandatory lime wedge.

Per serving: 90 cal, 0 g fat (0 g sat), 2 g carbs, 0 g sugar, 0 mg sodium, 1 g protein; 4.0% ABV.

9. Miller 64

Miller64 has all the makings of a satisfying pint-with the lowest calorie count on this list. Impressive. With a crisp, slightly-citrus finish, it’s a nostalgic sip of summer well into fall.

Per serving: 64 cal, 0 g fat (0 g sat), 2 g carbs, 0 g sugar, 5 mg sodium, 0 g protein; 2.8% ABV.

10. Busch Light

This all-American balanced beer is light enough to quench your thirst from the bar stool or the ballgame.

Per serving: 95 cal, 0 g fat (0 g sat), 3 g carbs, 0 g sugar, 0 mg sodium, 1 g protein; 4.1% ABV.

11. Beck’s Premier Light

Beck’s lighter rendition packs quite a punch in so few carbs-and calories. With a slight carbonation, its finish is as crisp as it is satisfying.

Per serving: 64 cal, 0 g fat (0 g sat), 4 g carbs, 0 g sugar, 0 mg sodium, 1 g protein; 2.3% ABV.

Prophet T.B Joshua: 'Are you a real Christian?' - SCOAN founder asks

Prophet T.B Joshua: 'Are you a real Christian?' - SCOAN cleric

He asks some tough questions in a recent sermon.

Prophet T.B Joshua asks his congregation if they are real Christians in a new sermon.

In a recent no-nonsense teaching, the founder of the Synagogue Church of All Nations (SCOAN) asks some tough questions.

He also explains what being a child of God is really about in the video above which was uploaded on October 1, 2018.

According to him, "There has been a great mix-up in the Church. It is the erroneous assumption that spiritual truths can be intellectually perceived. Many people know about Christ but they don't know Christ. You can read your New Testament and still never find Jesus in it. You can be convinced that Jesus is the Son of God and still never find Jesus."

Stressing that having a Christian background does not equate to 'knowing Jesus,' the cleric further notes, "You can be a publisher of the Bible. You can know about Christ dying for you. You can head this or that religious organization. You can be the Founder and General Overseer and still never know Jesus of Nazareth in the power of the Holy Ghost."

ALSO READ: Prophet T.B Joshua urges Christians to hold on to their faith in God

Prophet T.B Joshua says there are two Christs in the church

During the sermon, the SCOAN leader made a shocking revelation. According to him, the church has "two Christs." He explains that these are "The Christ of history and of story and song - the baby Jesus" while the second is "this Christ which the Spirit reveals."

He dwells on the second kind of Christ, which he says is the only one worth knowing, in the video below.

Prophet T.B Joshua reveals that "if you are reasoned into Christianity, some wise fellow can reason you out of it - unless you know the Holy Spirit… It is either the Holy Spirit or darkness."

He concluded with serious questions.  "If today is your last day, where are you going," he asked. "If you are serving God without the Holy Spirit, you are serving a god you do not know," he stated.

Mahrez misses late penalty as Liverpool and Man City share goalless draw

Manchester City's Spanish manager Pep Guardiola talks with Manchester City's Algerian midfielder Riyad Mahrez as they leave the pitch following the English Premier League football match between Liverpool and Manchester City at Anfield in Liverpool, north west England on October 7, 2018. The match ended in a draw 0-0. Paul ELLIS / AFP

Manchester City’s record signing Riyad Mahrez blazed an 86th-minute penalty over the bar to preserve Liverpool’s unbeaten Premier League record as both sides failed to lay down an early marker in the title race with a disappointing 0-0 draw at Anfield.

City remain top of the table on goal difference, but both teams are now locked with Chelsea, who were 3-0 winners earlier at Southampton, on 20 points from eight games.

Unlike the four enthralling encounters between the two last season when Liverpool beat the English champions three times, a highly-anticipated clash fell flat with neither side managing to register a shot on target until after the hour mark.

City had the golden chance four minutes from time when substitute Leroy Sane was upended by Virgil van Dijk and referee Martin Atkinson pointed to the spot after waving away two earlier strong appeals from the visitors for a penalty.

With Sergio Aguero replaced on the hour mark, Mahrez, a £60-million ($78.7 million) signing from Leicester in July, took responsibility but fired high over the bar to Liverpool’s relief as City’s wait for a first win at Anfield since 2003 continued.

After starting the season with seven straight wins, though, Liverpool have now failed to win in any of their last four matches as the upcoming international break comes at the right time for Jurgen Klopp’s men.

Pep Guardiola had lost on all three of his previous visits to Anfield as City manager and the champions looked unnerved from their recent experiences early on.

Goal-shy Salah
Ahead of the game, Klopp tried to play down Mohamed Salah’s slump in form after an incredible 44-goal debut season at Anfield.

But the Egyptian again looked far from his best and snatched at the sort of chances he buried last season.

Salah had the first opening after just three minutes when he pulled his shot wide after jinking inside John Stones.

That was as clear a chance as there was before half-time as both teams’ exertions during Champions League games in midweek seemed to take their toll in a first 45 minutes lacking the intensity of their meetings from last term.

Klopp made just two changes from a 1-0 defeat by Napoli on Wednesday, with Dejan Lovren making a surprise return in central defence and Joe Gomez moving to right-back at the expense of Trent Alexander-Arnold.

But the decision to recall the Croatian could have backfired when Lovren was lucky to avoid conceding a penalty for bringing down Aguero inside the area.

City quickly neutralised Liverpool’s threat by keeping possession for long periods without forcing Alisson Becker into a save before the break.

The second half followed the same pattern as Liverpool’s initial burst fizzled out and City took control.

Guardiola was furious as another penalty shout was turned down when Van Dijk was instead awarded a free-kick for a pull by Fernandinho as the Dutch defender handled inside the area.

A rare incisive Liverpool counter-attack found Salah again in a good position 21 minutes from time, but he blazed high over the bar.

Mahrez tested Alisson with a near-post shot that the Brazilian turned behind, but his real chance to make himself a City hero came when the pace of Sane was too much for the normally flawless Van Dijk and this time a penalty was given.

A message appeared to come from the City bench for Mahrez to take the spot-kick instead of Gabriel Jesus.

But that proved costly as the pressure got to Mahrez and City had to settle for a point.

Wife of Nigeria’s President, Muhammadu Buhari, Aisha Buhari expressed her displeasure over the “impunityâ€ taking place in the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC).

Atiku also released a thank-you statement.

In paying tribute to former president, Olusegun Obasanjo, Atiku said he would not have succeeded as a presidential candidate if “President Olusegun Obasanjo had not made me his vice president.

“Under his tutelage, I learnt quite a lot, he said. “I wish to pay my personal tribute to him.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) through the Head, Media and Information, Fabian Benjamin says about 200,000 candidates have been offered admission for the 2018/2019 academic session.

Benjamin said that the admission took effect after the board’s policy meeting in June in Gbongan, Osun.

According to him, the exercise is done through the Central Admission Process (CAP), an automated process to eliminate all human interference.

APC acting National Publicity Secretary, Yekini Nabena has called on political parties in the country, particularly the PDP and its agents, to stick to issue-based actions and campaigns as the nation enters into electioneering campaign.

The statement was in reaction to a recent attempt by the PDP leadership to forcibly enter the Nigeria Police Headquarters under the guise of a protest.

The APC spokesman condemned the act and described it as irresponsible, shameful and reckless actions.
