Iran’s health ministry said Monday a total of 84 people have died and nearly 1,000 been poisoned from consuming bootleg alcohol over the past six weeks, ISNA news agency reported.
Despite tough penalties against alcohol consumption since the Islamic revolution of 1979, the use of smuggled or bootleg liquor remains widespread.
Multiple cases of poisoning by a deadly batch of moonshine were first reported in late September and have spread across the country.
Iraj Harirchi, spokesman for the health ministry, said 959 people had been treated for poisoning, describing the wave of cases as “very unusual”, according to the semi-official agency ISNA.
As well as 84 deaths, 305 have been treated for kidney damage and 27 suffered eye damage, he added.
Harirchi said the main cause was the use of toxic methanol in place of the ethanol found in properly distilled spirits.
“Some have been arrested in this regard and people should know that even alcohol packed and sealed in foreign packages can easily be fake,” Harirchi said.
The most poisoning cases were reported in Alborz province north of Tehran and Hormozgan on the south coast.
Only members of state-recognised religious minorities have the right to produce or purchase alcoholic drinks in Iran.
Those who break Iran’s alcohol laws can be fined, lashed or jailed, but bootleg liquor is widely available through illegal dealers.

I have looked on with longing at the Ake Arts and Book Festival over the years, and my turn is finally here. After sulking that it wasnâ€t going to be held at Abeokuta, I let things be and soaked in my mounting excitement. So far, so good.
Sade Adeniran, Jennifer Makumbi, Bayo Olupohunda, and I visited the Clegg Girls Junior and Senior High School in Surulere this morning. Lagos traffic didnâ€t fail: it was as congested as ever, and added into the mix were a driver who stopped every five minutes to ask other clueless people for directions and torrential rain. The downpour didnâ€t ease up for the first fifteen minutes of our talk with the senior high students, but we still had a wonderful conversation with them about the books they are reading, our sources of inspiration, the challenges of writing, and the language to write in. One student was especially poetic. “Our brain is like an ocean,â€� she said. The junior high students also came prepared and asked about what qualities are needed to write, why we write, and one even asked, “Donâ€t you get tired?â€�
In the evening, we attended the launch of Ouida Books, watched the moving and powerful Wanjiru Kamuyu, and do what writers do when they gather: merry-make.

The death toll from a mining accident in Eastern China has risen to 21 after the last miner was found dead on Monday, state media reported.
A total of 22 people were trapped underground after a rock burst in a coal mine in Shandong province on Oct. 20.
Only one person was rescued, authorities said.
Rock bursts happen when the opening of a deep mine shaft reduces pressure, causing the rock to explode, and are one of the biggest hazards for miners.
The number of casualties rose gradually as the search and rescue crew made their way through a 74-metre-deep tunnel that was blocked on both ends by collapsed coal.
China is the worldâ€s largest producer and consumer of coal, and its mines are regarded as the most dangerous in the world.
Thousands of miners are killed every year.
Many such incidents are blamed on poor safety regulations and a lack of oversight and most deaths are never reported in the media.

Julen Lopetegui’s brief and inglorious reign as Real Madrid coach could come to an end on Monday with the defending European champions tipped to appoint Antonio Conte as his replacement.
Madrid was thrashed 5-1 by great rivals Barcelona on Sunday as Luis Suarez scored a hat-trick, surely sealing Lopetegui’s fate.
According to Spanish media, Real directors are set to meet later on Monday afternoon, when Lopetegui’s sacking could be confirmed.
He was named coach only 139 days ago, with his decision to accept the post costing him the chance to lead Spain at the World Cup.
But Madrid’s dreadful recent run showed no sign of abating at the Camp Nou. They have now managed one win in their last seven matches, sit ninth in La Liga and earlier this month went more than eight hours without a goal.
Sports daily AS called the defeat a “lethal rout” on its front page on Monday, and it is a far cry from Sergio Ramos hoisting a third consecutive Champions League trophy in May.
After Sunday’s game, Ramos pointedly stated that managing the dressing room at Real is more important than technical knowledge. Some now believe, perhaps club president Florentino Perez included, that the team needs a firmer hand.
Zinedine Zidane and Lopetegui have both been keen to afford freedom to the players while Conte is seen as a demanding coach, meticulous in his tactical preparation and unrelenting when it comes to defensive organisation.
“I’ve always had a good relationship with all the coaches,” Ramos said. “Respect is earned, it isn’t imposed. Those are the coaches with whom we’ve won titles. Managing the dressing room is more important than the knowledge of a coach.”
The finger of blame is not only being pointed at Lopetegui, with Perez also being criticised for his failure to sign a replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo after the Portuguese superstar departed for Juventus.
“It is not just Julen’s fault”, read the headline on the front page of Marca, Spain’s biggest selling daily.
Fractious
Conte is available after being sacked by Chelsea in July. He had led them to the Premier League title in 2017 in his first season when a switch to a three-man defence was hailed as a brilliant, and decisive, strategic move.
But they finished fifth in his second year when the Italian grew increasingly agitated and fractious. He criticised the club’s transfer policy and fell out with Diego Costa, who was eventually sold to Atletico Madrid.
Conte would be taking over a Madrid team that is now seven points behind Barcelona, who returned to the top of the table after their emphatic win. Ramos insisted, though, the title is not lost yet.

The key to success is to work. Madrid never gives up when it can turn the situation around.”
All the failures that have underlined their problems under Lopetegui were on show in the Clasico: poor finishing, frantic defending and key players performing well below par, let alone at their best.
Lopetegui pointed to misfortune too, as Luka Modric hit the post at 2-1, while Suarez’s second came from a penalty, awarded only after consultation with the Video Assistant Referee.
“We feel we could have turned the game around, we had chances to equalise, and go on and win,” Lopetegui said. “But it did not happen, and there was more bad luck, more injuries, and the third goal killed our hopes. The punishment was excessive, 5-1 does not reflect the game.”
Madrid midfielder Casemiro was less generous. “What we have shown today is what we have shown all season,” said the Brazilian.
“We have to run more, stand up more, fight more. We have played well in spells, and today we started the second half well but that is this season. We are a disaster, all playing very badly, all of us.”
Madrid’s director of institutional relations Emilio Butragueno dodged a question about Lopetegui’s future afterwards. “This is not the moment to talk about that,” he said.
Conte lined up at Real Madrid with Lopetegui on the brink
Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle have been on their Royal tour since last week which has seen then visit several countries including Australia.
However, the couple is currently in New Zealand and while giving a speech in a ceremony, the Prince spoke on how happy he is to be on the tour.

Greek police have fired tear gas to repel rioting teenagers who attacked them with petrol bombs and stones during a protest by high school students in central Athens.
No arrests or injuries were reported from Monday’s clashes, which started outside the parliament building and continued outside the ancient site of the Temple of Olympian Zeus.
Police said some 2,000 people took part in the protest against the left-led government’s education policies, shouting slogans such as “Give money for education and not for NATO slaughter.”
Most of the trouble was caused by a couple of hundred youths wearing masks who vandalized traffic lights, public phones and public transport bus shelters.

The ultra-Modern Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba has been picked as the venue of the opening match for this yearâ€s edition of the Principals†Cup Football Competition sponsored by Zenith Bank Plc.
Only on Wednesday, the stadium which hosted the Africa Athletics Championship earlier in the year hosted the final of the 2018 Federation Cup competition which Rangers of Enugu won in a thrilling encounter that ended 3-3 at fulltime. The Antelopes won on penalties.
The stadium which is also being tipped to host Super Eagles soon in a competitive match will be the venue where Comprehensive High School Ogwuachi-Uku and St Anthonyâ€s College, Uku will kick-off the youth football competition.
The competition grounded for many years came back to life two years ago courtesy of Zenith Bank and will be competed for by over 1,200 private secondary schools and 446 public government secondary schools in the state.
All the schools in the 25 Local Governments in the state will be competing for just a single slot in each LG.
Group Managing Director of Zenith Bank, Peter Amangbo, has assured that the competition will continue to get better with every edition.
“We expect a keen contest and urge the organisers to ensure fair play all through the competition so that a true winner will emerge. Zenith Bank will always contribute to talent hunt and boost sports development in Nigeria,� Amangbo said.
Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education in Delta, Chiedu Ebie and other top government functionaries are expected to grace the opening match along with officials of the sponsors, Zenith Bank.
