Reuben Abati, Daniel, In Kashamu’s Candidates’ List To INEC

INEC

Abeokuta – The former Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to former President Goodluck Jonathan, Dr Reuben Abati and the former Governor of Ogun State, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, were amongst the names of candidates submitted by Senator Buruji Kashamu’s faction of People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State to Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

In a statement personally signed by the Senator, Leke Shittu, who emerged at the primaries conducted by the faction led by Adebayo Dayo remained the gubernatorial candidate of the party, while Abati was named as his running mate.

Daniel, who is the Director General of Atiku Abubakar Presidential Primary Campaign Organisation, was also named as the Ogun East Senatorial candidate of the party, the current position occupied by Kashamu.

The Senator also revealed that all the candidates by Adebayo Dayo exco in all levels have been received and acknowledged by the electoral body.

The statement read, “The candidates’ list of the Kashamu backed Bayo Dayo exco of Ogun PDP has been received and fully acknowledged by INEC for the 2019 elections. Prince Leke Shitu and Dr Rueben Abati were duly acknowledged as the Ogun PDP Governorship and Deputy Governorship candidates respectively.

“Former Ogun state Governor, HE Otunba Gbenga Daniel is for the Senate, Ogun East and all other candidates for the Senatorial, Federal House of Representatives and the State House of Assembly were equally accepted and duly acknowledged.”

The Senator, who took a swipe at the National Chairman and the National Publicity Secretary of the Party, Uche Secondus and Kola Ologbondiyan, respectively, saying that the duo were deliberately acting unlawfully having refused all wise counsel.

Kashamu said the leadership of the Party was ignorant of the fact that both the chapter Chairman and Secretary can sign on behalf of the National Chairman and the Secretary in the event of judicial resolution in the case of Ogun State.

He further alleged that the leadership of the Party has an unexplainable desperation to install Ladi Adebutu as the governorship candidate in the state.

He however vowed not to be intimidated out of the Party, insisting that the PDP is a creation of Nigeria for all Nigerians who are willing to be members.

He said: “Any rumours being peddled around by our National Chairman and National Publicity Secretary through a purported press release should be disregarded as the duo are deliberately acting unlawfully and beyond their powers to which they’ve refused wise counsel to tow the path of rule of law.

“The guarantee of our democracy under established regulations and rule of law is that no party official, no matter how highly placed could use the office for selfish preservation/promotion  of his own interests and legacy at the detriment of the interests and legacy of other party members.

“This resolve to act with unchecked impunity shall be fully resisted in a fight to finish battle to strengthen our party’s internal democracy.

“Ignorantly, the National Chairman is unaware that where there is dispute resulting into a judicial resolution as in Ogun state matter, the State Chairman and Secretary could sign in place of National Chairman and Secretary when backed by validly subsisting court judgements.

“Whatever makes our National Chairman to be this resolute at challenging the constituted electoral regulatory body, INEC and also dwelling in nauseating impunity against Nigerian court judgements out of unexplainable desperation to install Ladi Adebutu as PDP Ogun governorship candidate should as well have forced him to create his own INEC and conduct elections inside his office.

“The PDP as a Nigerian creation by law is for all Nigerians by established regulations and national statue; nobody can as such intimidate us in our democracy.

“All the state elders, leaders and party faithful are again enjoined to continue and remain focused on the ongoing aggressive mobilisation and reconciliation efforts for our party, PDP to come out victorious in the forthcoming elections. I’m emboldened by the power and grace of almighty Allah and shall NEVER succumb to injustice.”

US-backed Syria force suspends anti-IS attacks after Turkey hits

A fighter from the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) attends the funeral of a commander, killed a day earlier in the town of Hajin during battles against the Islamic State (IS) group, in the Kurdish-controlled city of Qamishly in northeastern Syria, on October 29, 2018. – The Islamic State group ousted a US-backed coalition of Kurdish and Arab forces from its holdout in eastern Syria on October 28, killing dozens of fighters, a monitoring group said. (Photo by Delil SOULEIMAN / AFP)

A Kurdish-led force backed by a US-led coalition on Wednesday suspended operations against the Islamic State group and said they would not resume until Turkey halts its attacks on Kurdish militia posts in northern Syria.

The Syrian Democratic Forces, joint Arab-Kurdish units under Kurdish command, announced a “temporary halt” to their operation, launched in eastern Syria on September 10, and condemned Turkey’s “provocations”.

On Wednesday, Turkish shelling of Kurdish positions in the Kobane sector of northern Syria killed four fighters, according to Turkey’s state-run Anadolu news agency.

The SDF condemned what it called the “coordination” of Turkey’s attacks with a fightback by jihadists and warned of “a prolonged halt to our military operation” against IS if Ankara keeps up its strikes.

Hundreds of Kurdish civilians, carrying party flags and portraits of jailed Turkish Kurdish separatist leader Abdullah Ocalan, demonstrated in the streets of the northeastern city of Qamishli to denounce the Turkish attacks.

“These attacks serve to support the mercenaries” of IS, said a protester, 44-year-old teacher Rizan Hamo. “The international community and the world must stop the Turkish state.”

Backed by coalition air strikes, the SDF aims to expel IS from a holdout on the Iraqi border, but the jihadists staged a fierce fightback last week under the cover of a sand storm, using suicide bombings to force a retreat.

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, the IS counter-attack killed at least 72 fighters from the SDF, which is dominated by the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG).

The monitoring group said hundreds of Kurdish fighters, men and women, had since been deployed on the outskirts of the IS holdout of Hajin.

But, the Britain-based monitor said Wednesday, “on the ground, everything has come to a halt”.

On Tuesday, two days after another round of shelling of Kurdish posts in northern Syria, Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said his country had completed preparations for a new operation to “destroy” the YPG militia, which Ankara has branded a terrorist group.

“We are going to destroy the terrorist structure in the east of the Euphrates. We have completed our preparations, plans, programmes regarding this issue,” said Erdogan, who has made similar threats in the past.

The YPG has worked closely with the United States in the fight against IS jihadists in Syria, straining ties between NATO allies Washington and Ankara.

The animosity between Syria’s Kurds and Turkey underlines the complexity of the multi-front Syrian conflict that has cost over 360,000 lives since it broke out in 2011 with anti-government protests that were violently suppressed by the regime.

Earlier this year, Turkish military forces supported Syrian opposition fighters in seizing the Afrin region, west of the Euphrates, from the YPG in a two-month air and ground offensive.

Ankara previously launched an offensive between 2016 and 2017 against IS on its border with Syria, as well as blocking the YPG from linking up areas under its control.

The statement said APC-USA members, at the convention, called on Nigerians to continue to support the Buhari/Osinbajo government and the party as they continue to position Nigeria for development and greatness in the 21st century.

According to them, the Buhari administration had stabilized the Nigeria economy and that the single payer account system of the Federal Government had saved Nigeria a lot of money by blocking the loopholes through which the corrupt elements syphoned money.

They equally said that the rapid infrastructural developments and the gigantic progress in the agricultural sector, and the war against corruption and terrorism of the Buhari administration must continue.

Speaking further, the statement called on Nigerians to reject the current gang up against President Buhari and the APC by those it called corrupt and discredited politicians and some corrupt high profile individuals in the country.

“These are the people that plundered our commonwealth and looted our treasury making Nigeria one of the poorest countries in the world despite the abundant natural and human resources in the country,” it said.

It called on Nigerians to take their destinies in their hands and reject the PDP and its candidates at all levels, saying: “We cannot afford to go back to the sixteen years of destruction and unabated looting by the PDP during Obasanjo and Jonathan administrations. When you fight corruption, corruption fights back.”

The statement, therefore, reiterated the APC-USA’s commitment to continue to support Buhari and APC candidates at all levels and to make the expertise and the technical knowledge of its members available to the party-led governments at all levels to help in executing their programmes for the country.

Minimum Wage: NLC Speaks Tough, Vows To Paralyse Nigeria’s Economy

Labour strike

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has rejected the N22,500 proposed by the state governors as the New National Minimum Wage for workers in the country.

Mr Ayuba Wabba, NLC president, said this while briefing newsmen on Wednesday in Abuja.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF) had issued a communique after its meeting claiming that state governors can only pay N22, 500, as the new national minimum wage.

“We wish to reiterate our position adopted at our National Executive Council (NEC) meeting on Oct. 23 that any figure below N30, 000 will not be accepted by us.

“We call on our members to continue to mobilise in preparation for the commencement of an indefinite strike on Nov. 6, if by then necessary steps are not taken to adopt the recommendation of the Tripartite Committee, Wabba said.

The NLC president also said that the NGF was not a negotiating body but merely a party in the negotiation for the convenience of state governors.

He also noted that the Tripartite Committee from inception sent letters to each state government to send their memorandum as their contributions to the new national minimum wage negotiating process.

The President, however, said that 21 states sent in their memorandum quoting figures.

“Second, the demand of organised labour is not N30, 000. Our initial demand is N66, 500. N30, 000 is the compromise figure arrived at the end of negotiations by the tripartite partners, which are the governors, employers and organised labour.

“The new minimum wage was a product of intense negotiation that lasted for almost one year, he said.

He also noted that the governors had six representatives on the tripartite committee; one state governor represented each of the geo-political zones.

He said that the representatives of the state governors were part and parcel of the negotiating committee from the beginning to the end.

Wabba said, “It is important to note that the National Minimum Wage is not an allocation to workers but a product of negotiation by the tripartite partners.

He said that the unilateral pronouncement by governors is an abuse of every known principle of industrial relations, laws, processes and international best practices.

“Third, the NGF, erroneously, stated that the population of salaried workers is five per cent of the general population in Nigeria.

“This five per cent represent the nation’s workforce including teachers, health workers, police personnel, military men and women and among other workers labouring for the development of our country.

“Of what benefit are roads, rails and bridges without human beings to run them?

“Fourth, we are also very concerned about the huge pressure being brought upon the Organised Private Sector (OPS) to compromise their stand on the N30, 000 New National Minimum Wage.

“This pressure by enemies of the Nigerian people was what led to the recent statement by NACCIMA that sought to cast aspersion on an already negotiation on the New National Minimum Wage.

“I have spoken to the Head of NACCIMA and she has disputed what has been published by many newspapers.

“I am also aware that the Nigeria Employers Consultative Association (NECA) will also issue an official statement, “Wabba added.

He explained that labour demands that the constitutional, legal and morally right step to be taken at this point is for the Chairman of National Minimum Wage Tripartite Negotiating Committee to submit the report of the already concluded negotiations to Mr President.

He also advised all the governors to return to their respective states and gather their workers and tell them reason they cannot pay N30,000 not just coming to Abuja to announce they cannot pay

FIFA bans Ghana's former football president for life

(FILES) In this file photo taken on June 23, 2014 President of The Ghana Football Association Kwesi Nyantakyi answers questions during a press conference in Maceio during the 2014 FIFA World Cup. An explosive documentary has rocked Ghana's football association, showing executives including the organisation's head allegedly proposing bribes worth millions of euros. Nyantakyi was caught suggesting lucrative deals to undercover journalists posing as "investors" in the film "Number 12", which was shown pn June 6, 2018 at a preview attended by diplomats and politicians in the capital Accra. / AFP PHOTO / Carl DE SOUZA

Ghana’s former football president Kwesi Nyantakyi has been banned by FIFA from football for life and ordered to pay a hefty fine after being found guilty of bribery and corruption.

FIFA’s ethics committee banned Nyantakyi “for life from all football-related activities (administrative, sports or any other) at both national and international level,” it said in a statement issued Tuesday.

The committee found Nyantakyi guilty of “conflicts of interest”, “bribery and corruption” and “commission” after being caught on camera accepting bribes.

Along with the ban, Nyantakyi faces a fine of CHF 500,000 ($496,000, 438,000 euros).

In June, a documentary by investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas was broadcast showing hidden camera footage of Ghanaian officials taking bribes, including Nyantakyi.

Nyantakyi was accused of requesting $11 million (9.3 million euros) to secure government contracts.

The revelations rocked Ghana, where football is the national sport and which prides itself as being a stable democracy in an often turbulent region.

In September, the Referees Association of Ghana said it had banned eight referees and assistant referees for life while 53 officials were subject to 10-year bans.

Football analysts have described corruption as a “curse” on African football.

On Tuesday, 10 youth players from Benin were jailed for one month each for lying about their age after they were kicked out of qualifying for next year’s under-17 Africa Cup of Nations finals.

At the same hearing, the former president of Benin’s football federation, Anjorin Moucharafou, was sentenced to two months in jail.
