EFCC to arraign 4 police officers for allegedly stealing N1.3bn

EFCC, policeFour police officers and two firms, are billed to be arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) before the Lagos State Special Offences Court in Ikeja for allegedly diverting N1,301,334,108 from the coffers of the Nigeria Police Force.

The defendants, who were charged before Justice Sherifat Solebo, include Olumide Odumosu, Sule Tegina, Helen Nwafor and Okpalugo Ifeoma.

Others are Olu Osmond Nigeria Limited and Jemmy Yus Investment Nigeria Limited.

They are facing 14 counts.

In the charge, marked, Temp/39698/2018, the EFCC alleged that the defendants stole the N1.3bn from the coffers of the Nigeria Police Force and fraudulently converted it to their own between 2013 and 2014.

The anti-graft agency alleged in the charges that the defendants conspired with one Ogbadu Joseph and one Hassan Muhammed, who were said to be at large.

The prosecuting counsel for the EFCC, Rotimi Oyedepo, said the defendants acted contrary to Section 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011 and were liable to be punished under Section 285(1) of the same Act.

The defendants were billed to be arraigned in court on Thursday but the proceedings were stalled as the 3rd defendant, Helen Nwafor, told the court that she did not understand English language and would require the charges to be translated to her in Igbo language.

The judge adjourned till November 7, 2018 to get an Igbo interpreter.

The defence counsel, A.O. Osinfowora, however asked that the defendants should be returned to the EFCC, but Justice Solebo turned the prayer down and ordered instead that the defendants should be remanded in the prison custody.

One 'black box' recovered from Indonesia jet as first funeral held

Members of a rescue team carry the flight data recorder, part of the ill-fated Lion Air flight JT 610's black box, after it was recovered from the Java Sea, at Jakarta port on November 1, 2018. – A black box from the crashed Lion Air jet has been recovered, authorities said on November 1, a find that could be critical to establishing why a brand new jet plunged into the Java Sea shortly after take-off, killing 189 people on board. (Photo by BAY ISMOYO / AFP)

A black box from the crashed Lion Air jet has been recovered, authorities said Thursday, a find that could be critical to establishing why a brand new jet plunged into the Java Sea shortly after take-off, killing 189 people on board.

Divers plucked the orange data recorder from the ocean and placed it in a plastic tub as search teams continued to scour the seabed for the fuselage of the Boeing-737 MAX 8, which crashed off Indonesia’s northern coast on Monday and had only been in service a few months.

There have been no survivors and only body parts have been found so far.

Relatives are desperate to be able to say goodbye to their loved ones and the first funeral for one of the passengers was held on Thursday.

But many others have yet to be located and analysts hope further victims could still be found with the bulk of the wreckage.

“I assume that there will be a lot of bodies still strapped into the seats,” aviation analyst Dudi Sudibyo told AFP.

Dozens of divers are taking part in the massive recovery effort along with helicopters and ships, but authorities have all but ruled out finding any survivors.

Cockpit recorder still missing
The black boxes, which airlines are required to install, offer investigators their best chance of discovering why such a new jet crashed. The devices record information about the speed, altitude and direction of the plane as well as flight crew conversations.

“The good news is we have found one of the black boxes,” search and rescue agency head Muhammad Syaugi told reporters.

Authorities say a flight data recorder was recovered, but they were still looking for the cockpit voice recorder.

On a Jakarta dockside Thursday, Boeing and US National Transportation Safety Board officials joined the Indonesian team in sifting through twisted metal plane parts and piles of passengers’ torn clothing, shoes, wallets and mobile phones.

The single-aisle Boeing plane, which was on its way from Jakarta to Pangkal Pinang city, is one of the world’s newest and most advanced commercial passenger jets.

Despite the name, black boxes are in fact bright orange with reflective stripes. They are built to survive at vast depths and in extreme heat and are fitted with a beacon which can emit a signal for one month.

Black boxes help explain nearly 90 percent of all crashes, according to aviation experts.

“Data from the plane — the engine, all the instruments — are recorded there,” Sudibyo said. “If there is an anomaly, some technical problem, it is recorded there too.”

First funeral
Passengers’ remains are being sent to hospital for DNA comparison to relatives.

Forensic experts identified Jannatun Cintya Dewi as the first victim of the crash Wednesday evening.

The 24-year-old civil servant’s coffin was carried by pallbearers through the streets of her East Java hometown Sidoarjo on Thursday.

Dewi’s mother collapsed and had to be carried into their home, while friends and relatives wiped away tears as the casket was laid in a freshly dug grave sprinkled with flowers. A bowl of fruit and two palm branches lay at one end.

Some relate heart wrenching tales of their final contact with loved ones.

A selfie taken by a newlywed husband, Deryl Fida Febrianto, and sent to his wife some 30 minutes before the jetliner crashed has gone viral online.

Aviation experts are puzzled by the accident but say it’s too early to determine what caused the crash.

Lion’s admission that the jet had an unspecified technical issue on a previous flight — as well its abrupt fatal dive — have raised questions about whether it had faults specific to the newly released model, including a speed-and-altitude system malfunction.

The accident has also resurrected concerns about Indonesia’s poor air safety record which until recently saw the country’s carriers facing years-long bans from entering European Union and US airspace.

Lion Air has been plagued by safety concerns and customer complaints over unreliable scheduling and poor service.

The budget carrier has been involved in a number of incidents including a fatal 2004 crash and a collision between two Lion Air planes at Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta airport.

In 2014, an AirAsia crash in the Java Sea during stormy weather killed 162 people.

Video Clip: Impeachment Looms As Kano Assembly Summons Ganduje

Ganduje

The Daily Nigerian, an online Newspaper published the controversial video clip.

Mr Mujtafah Adamu , the Secretary of the seven-man ad-hoc Committee, disclosed this in an interview  on Thursday in Kano.

He said that the committee had invited the governor via a letter of Oct. 31.

“The letter which was signed by the Chairman of the Committee, Alhaji Baffa Danagundi and issued to the governor, is requesting his appearance and to hear the matter from his own perspective.’’

A copy of the letter, according to Adamu, is asking the governor for his statement as part of the proceedings on or before the day of the hearing.

The letter reads in part; “You may wish to appear together with your lawyers for the hearing, and enclosed is the copy of the video clips for your perusal.

If the Governor is found guilty, he may be impeached, sources among the lawmakers disclosed.

NAN recalled that the publisher of Daily Nigerian, an online Newspaper, Jafar Jafar, who on Oct. 25, appeared before the committee, had insisted that the published video clips were genuine and not a doctored document.

Jafar had during the public hearing admitted his failure to contact the government officials on the genuineness or otherwise of the video clips before releasing it in the media.

The Publisher, however, disclosed that he had received the clips from a top government official, whose identity he refused to disclose.

PDP chieftain lauds South-South Govs for maintaining regional peace

PDP chieftain lauds South-South Govs for maintaining regional peace

The party chieftain urged leaders at all levels in the country to carry followers along and to live by very good examples for peace to reign.

Mr Emmanuel Ogidi, Chairman, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), South-South, has commended Governors and other leaders in the oil-rich region for maintaining peace and stability in the zone.

Ogidi made the commendation in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Abuja.

He said though only God gives absolute peace, the Governors had consistently reached out to the grassroots.

“First, it is God that gives lasting peace but I must commend the Governors in the region; they are always reaching out to the people, particularly the youth.

“They make information available to the people; they give regular updates on government activities and carry the people along; they do not threaten them or ignore them, he said.

The party chieftain urged leaders at all levels in the country to carry followers along and to live by very good examples for peace to reign.

Speaking on the progress of the PDP, the chairman said that Nigerians now had very high sympathy for the party, adding that the party hoped to sustain it and win the 2019 elections.

“We assure Nigerians that this PDP will not only redeem its image but improve the lives of Nigerians by the grace of God, he added.

The PDP stalwart also said that the party would ensure strict observation of the principles of democracy and the rule of law, respect for court orders and the sanctity of human life.

Speaking on the late PDP chieftain, Mr Tony Anenhi, Ogidi said that he learnt a lot form the late elder statesman whom he came to know closely in 2005.

He said that Anenhi had gone through betrayals and disappointments in his political career but that he remained resilient.

According to him, Anenih did not believe in violence and that he was always ready to share his experiences with younger politicians to guide them through their career.

Ogidi recalled that during the PDP leadership crisis, Anenih was one leader who stood out, calling the warring parties for several meetings at his residence to settle the disputes.

“His advice to me that I should always do what is right has kept me going in spite of all the challenges faced in politics.

“Even when he left active politics, though I was taken aback and wondering why he was leaving, but he always made himself available when we needed him.

“He always wanted me to keep in touch, he was that open and sociable irrespective of class. I will really miss him.

“I will say we shall see again at the resurrection, my faith tells me that, he added.

Take a chilling tour of some of the world's most haunted places

world's most haunted places

Reading about these places alone is guaranteed to make the hairs on your arms stand.

In the spirit of All-Hallows' Eve, we're taking you on a chilling tour of the world's most haunted places.

From abandoned fortresses to gruesome murders, some beings have blurred the lines between the physical and the supernatural, hence choosing to haunt places they once set foot in. These places have become some of the creepiest places in the world, depending on how many ghosts inhabit them or how scary the stories get.

1. Poveglia Island, Italy

This island is just as beautiful as it is haunted. A small island located between Venice and Lido in the Venetian Lagoon of northern Italy, Poveglia is a no-go area for most locals in the area. Visiting the island might pose the problem of no local/guide to show you around the area as most are scared to be cursed. Even fishermen are scared to fish in the area. In the 14th century, sufferers of the Black Plague were sent to the island to die and later burnt on giant pyres. During the 1800s, the island served as a mental asylum where patients were tortured and killed.

Now, voices and screams from the island, as well as, fleeting shadows have been reported to be heard and seen on the creepy island.

2. Banff Springs Hotel, Alberta, Canada

This popular Scottish resort in Canada is considered the most haunted building in Canada. There are three ghosts that have been reported to be seen at the castle. A bride who broke her neck from a staircase fall after she freaked out from her dress being on fire, has been seen in the ballroom dancing with her dress on fire. Room 873 of the hotel has since had its doors bricked up after a family was murdered inside. However, guests have reported to have still seen the family in the hallway outside the room. Also, a former bellman, Sam Macauley, still roams the halls, helping guests up to their rooms and if one tries to make conversation with him or tip him, he vanishes.

3. Myrtles plantation, USA

Ten whole murders have occurred in this plantation. In the house, there is a mirror that allegedly holds the souls of Sara Woodruff and her children who had lived in the house a long time ago. The ghost of a former slave, Chloe, in a green turban peers at visitors while they're asleep and has also been photographed. The most spooky sighting is the ghost of a former owner, William Winter, who was reportedly shot on the front porch. Severally, his ghost has been seen writhing from the wound and crawling up the stairs, only to disappear at the 17th step.

4. Bhangarh Fort, Rajasthan, India

This fort, also known as "Bhoot Bangla" or "Fort of Ghosts", was built in the 17th century. It contains three storeys for you to explore, including temples, bazars, royal palaces and lots more. However, the fort is said to have been cursed. There are two stories behind the curse. A princess, Ratnavati, turned away the advances of a wizard called Singhia who cursed the palace, condemning the inhabitants to death, without any hope of rebirth. The other story suggests a local ascetic cursed the fort because its shadow overpowered his property. The result of this is that any attempt to build a roof for the fort fails as the roof will always collapse.

5. Castle of Good Hope, South Africa

One of the most preserved 17th century buildings in the world, the Castle of Good Hope reportedly has the ghost of a giant dog who pounces on unsuspecting visitors and vanishes into thin air. A mysterious woman, Lady in Grey, has also been seen running around the castle crying hysterically and holding her face. However, the woman has not been sighted since the body of a woman was discovered during excavations.

Hodgson promises Zaha full backing over online attacks

Soccer Football – Premier League – Everton v Crystal Palace – Goodison Park, Liverpool, Britain – October 21, 2018 Crystal Palace's Wilfried Zaha reacts Action Images via Reuters/Carl Recine

Crystal Palace boss Roy Hodgson has promised Wilfried Zaha the club’s full backing after the forward received racist abuse and threats on social media following his side’s Premier League draw with Arsenal.

Zaha, who has found himself at the centre of an ongoing debate over simulation in recent months, was targeted after winning a late penalty to help secure a 2-2 draw with Arsenal on Sunday.

Hodgson, who left the Ivory Coast international behind nursing a shoulder problem as the rest of the squad headed north for Wednesday’s 1-0 League Cup fourth-round defeat at Middlesbrough, condemned those who had abused him.

“As far as Wilf is concerned, the club will do everything they can to support him in this way,” said the former England manager.

“I don’t think there are many people out there, except perhaps the odd Twitter troll who knows no better, who believe that racially abusing people or threatening people is the right way to go.”

Zaha took to social media to stand up for himself following the Arsenal game and revealed on Instagram Tuesday that the abuse had escalated.

He wrote: “For all the people taking it one step further and being racist and wishing death on my family I wish you and your families the best too x p.s my life is still very good despite your hate.”

Zaha won a late penalty at Selhurst Park when he was caught by Granit Xhaka, with Luka Milivojevic converting the resulting spot kick to earn his side a point.

Xhaka said in a post-match television interview he thought the incident had been a “clear penalty”.

When asked how Zaha was, Hodgson replied: “Well, he was fine the last time I saw him.

“He took a bang on the shoulder at the weekend, which will be fine by the game with Chelsea — it would have been very difficult to have played him today with that knock on the shoulder anyway.

“But when I spoke to him yesterday, he was fine.”

GownA professor of Food Science and Technology, Ladoke Akintola University (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso, Nigeria, Isaac Adebayo Adeyemi, has identified carrying out a critical analysis of the current operations in both the public and private institutions and evaluating the merits and demerits of each of the operations within each system as the key to repositioning the educational in Nigeria.

Professor Adeyemi, who is also the chairman, Governing Council, The Polytechnic Ibadan, Oyo state stated this last week Thursday while delivering his valedictory lecture, entitled: “The Ivory Tower: Town and Gown in Contemporary Nigeria, which was the second in the series of valedictory lectures in the university.

Speaking further, he said: “From the results of the analysis, it would be feasible to fashion out the way forward at bringing afloat the sinking ship of quality education in the country.

While he highlighted the historical and emerging trends in town and gown relationships and the tremendous benefits it had brought to universities, particularly in the advanced countries, he emphasised the place of evaluating the town and gown relationship within the Nigerian context and identifying the missing gaps that needed to be addressed in repositioning Nigerian tertiary institutions for global competitiveness.

The principles and ideas of town and gown, he observed had been entrenched in the Nigerian university system as reflected in various forms, adding that “the university organs, academic units, and students bodies, directly and indirectly, have been playing significant roles in bridging the gap between the town and gown.

This he also noted had enabled such bodies to sell the university, faculty, department or unit to the community and the outside world, which tend to strengthen town and gown relationships.

The former, national president of the Nigeria Institutes of Food Science and Technology (NIFEST), reminiscing said serving in this capacity gave him the opportunity to build an excellent town and gown relationship, which he had always found useful in fixing his students for industrial attachments as components of their learning.

Professor Adeyemi, who was also the first deputy vice-chancellor of LAUTECH therefore challenged the management of the institution to take a retrospective look at the university and come up with strategic plan at rebuilding its structures, saying “in doing this  we have to come down from the ivory tower, carry out  internal surgeries and thereafter launder the institution’s image.

“The university must come up with principles and application that would restore confidence in town and gown relationships. This no doubt would enhance improved levels of funding by the owner states and other relevant stakeholders, he said.
