Buhari Assures Women Of Increased Appointment

President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday pledged to continue to be fair and just to women in terms of appointments and realisation of the 35 per cent affirmative action.

The president made the pledge during an audience with the leadership of the National Council for Women Societies (NCWS) at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

He said that his administration would look into possible appointment of women ministers to replace those that left the cabinet recently.

He also said that soft loans would be made available to women for agricultural activities.

The president promised to address the deficit in women appointments by appointing more women into the cabinet following the demand by the NCWS for more women representation in the Federal cabinet.

“I have appreciated the subtle and timely threat you have made; I said timely because you waited until campaigns are about to start, you mobilised yourselves to come and threaten.

“I hope you are being very fair to me; I will leave you to the public to judge. You said I haven’t replaced the casualties from my council about the ladies.

I’m sure you are following up (Finance and Women Affairs).

“One applied to leave because I think she wants to be the governor of the state and one failed to meet the government requirement of declaring NYSC certificate.

“I replaced them with other ladies; so, I don’t know where I went wrong there?

“This deficit in women appointments I will look at it and the road is clear; election is coming perhaps I will get a few more advisers, ministers from the women.

“I thank you most sincerely for coming to see me.’’

On the rate of sexual violence and abuse in society, particularly at the Internally Displaced Persons’ camps (IDPs), the president said he had already directed the security agencies to immediately address the problem.

He said the security agencies had been directed to bring to book all those implicated in the dastardly acts.

“I have taken note of the observations you made on the abuse of women in the IDPs camps.

“I’m encouraging the police to be much more efficient and I think something is being done about it.’’

The president also pledged to ensure that women farmers benefit from Federal Government’s agricultural loans and other programmes to boost food production in the country.

He, therefore, advised the women to form themselves into cooperative societies to enable them benefit from such loans.

In her remarks, the President of the NCWS, Mrs Gloria Laraba, commended the Buhari-led administration for implementing laudable programmes that aim to uplift the quality of life of the citizens.

According to her, the Trader Moni programme is a worthwhile intervention to keep the spirit of entrepreneurship alive in local communities and help petty traders grow their micro businesses.

“We are pleased that these initiatives are beneficial to many of our women one way or another.

“This is because we are in the front-end of the concerned activities and will be impacted the most,’’ she said.

Laraba called on the president to encourage the Nigeria police to strengthen its investigation and prosecution of sexual violence through the creation of a new department to arrest the menace across the country.

She also urged the president to appoint more women as members of the Federal Cabinet to replace those that left recently.

Alliance Law Firm, Lawyers representing the suspended Executive Secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), Prof. Usman Yusuf, on Thursday described as false, news that its client sued the President.

The Managing Partner of Alliance, Dr Uche Val-Obi (SAN), in a statement in Lagos, said that his client pledged his continued loyalty to the President and would fully cooperate with the incoming Director, Mr Ben Omogo.

“Our attention has been drawn to the false news making rounds that our client, Prof. Usman Yusuf, the Executive Secretary (ES) of NHIS, has taken the Presidency to Court over his purported suspension by the Governing Board.

“As Counsel to Prof. Yusuf, we wish to place on record that there is no iota of truth in this story, and that he has not taken the President or the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) to Court as alleged.

“Instead, our Client had, through our firm, approached the Federal High Court vide an originating summons filed on 29th October 2018 in Suit No. FHC/ABJ/CS/1220/2018, with him as Plaintiff while NHIS, Hon. Minister of Health, and Attorney General were named as defendants.

Local Content: Senate queries 30% indigenous shareholding in Halliburton

Senate condoles with family of slain Red Cross worker

Chairman of the committee, Sen. Solomon Adeola, raised the concern during a tour to Halliburton Nigeria in Port Harcourt, as part of its two-day oversight visit to Bayelsa and Rivers.

The Senate Committee on Local Content on Thursday queried lopsided shareholding structure in favour of foreign component in Halliburton Nigeria.

Chairman of the committee, Sen. Solomon Adeola, raised the concern during a tour to Halliburton Nigeria in Port Harcourt, as part of its two-day oversight visit to Bayelsa and Rivers.

Adeola queried reports that shareholding in Halliburton was 30 per cent for the Nigerian component and 70 per cent for Halliburton global.

He also deplored the fact that Halliburton Nigeria was not listed on the Nigeria Stock Exchange.

He requested the company to submit its payroll to ascertain disparity in remuneration for foreign and Nigerian workers.

Adeola also directed the company to “submit tax certificate, financial statement and other documents, to ascertain level of compliance with local content regulation.

He asked that company to furnish the committee with its recruitment process as well as level of involvement of local communities in the company’s activities.

Responding, Deputy Managing Director of the company, Mr Okey Okoli, assured that all the documents requested would be made available to the committee.

He said the company was 97 per cent Nigerian, with 606 indigenous staff “and only three per cent foreign, accounting for 22 expatriate workers.

Okoli added that the company was in strict compliance with tax remittance and the one per cent remittance to the Nigerian Content Development Management Board.

He disclosed that there was no disparity in the salaries and allowances paid to indigenous workers and foreigners, adding that Nigerians who worked in foreign offices were paid “hardship allowance like foreigners were paid in Nigeria.

“We do not have shortfall in terms of compliance with one per cent remittance to NCDMB.

“Our shareholding structure is 70 per cent global and 30 per cent local.

“In terms of capacity-building, we noticed a challenge for local companies to train Nigerians abroad, so we opened a training centre in Akwa Ibom state, he said.

Okoli, who is also Country Business Development Manager Nigeria, West Central and East Africa Area of the company, however, noted that the training was mainly in oil and gas

Toke Makinwa says dating beyond 3 years is a waste of time

Toke Makinwa talks on time of dating before marriage.

Anything after two and a half or three years, tops, is way too much, she adds.

How long should you be in a relationship for before getting tired of your partner's indecision concerning walking down the aisle?

For some, the decision to tie the knot is not as important as the strong relationship and connection being created while the relationship/courtship is ongoing. For this set of people, it does not necessarily matter that the relationship has been ongoing for a long time, being together, living their best life and staying true to each is enough. Wedding and a marriage will come somewhere down the line. No qualms.

Vlogger, Toke Makinwa does not subscribe to this opinion and that is what she talks about in the most recent video posted on her Yotube channel.

ALSO READ: The joys and joys of dating a guy who says no to premarital sex

Toke says any relationship that should transform into a marriage should not last beyond two and a half years, and at most, three years.

Citing P Diddy and Cassie who broke up after dating for 11 years as example, Toke explains the inappropriateness of dating for too long without walking down the aisle at some point. She says three years is enough time to know all there is to know about someone, and with that knowledge, people should already know whether they want to be with that partner forever or not.

Refusing to make up your mind after this is simply "taking the piss"  she says.

Check the clip above to hear Toke address the issue.
