APC Crises : Oshiomhole Costing Party 5m Voters — Gov. Okorocha

Abuja – Embattled Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State on Thursday said since Adams Oshiomhole, National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, came on board the party is losing almost five million voters because of anger and protest, saying he needs to be called to order.

He also said Bola Ahmed Tinubu, APC National Leader, is ignorant of the crisis brewing within the party.

Okorocha said this in apparent reaction to Tinubu’s open support for Oshiomhole despite the grievances that has characterised the recent primary elections.

“Tinubu may be misinformed, if he is properly informed he will not say what Oshiomhole is doing is the right thing, Okorocha said.

According to the Imo governor, who doubles as chairman, Progressives Governors’ Forum, the party stands a chance of losing five million eligible persons who should have voted for APC in next year’s general election.

The governor’s visit to the presidency where he met with President Muhammadu Buhari behind closed doors may have been inspired by recent developments within the polity, where the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party has shut out Okorocha’s bid to foist his son-in-law as the party’s candidate on Imo State.

It is being speculated that the NWC may revert back to the report of the Ahmed Gulak Committee, which conducted the initial primary that produced Senator Hope Uzodinma as the party’s governorship candidate for the state.

Tinubu had on Wednesday met with President Buhari, where he maintained support for the actions of Oshiomhole and advised the aggrieved aspirants in the recent primaries to take their failure in good fate.

The aggrieved governor told State House correspondents, “Gentlemen of the press, I am here to clear the air that the presidency is not behind what Oshiomhole is doing in some of the states and which has affected our party negatively; and from my understanding from Mr. President there is no such directive for Oshiomhole to do anything illegal or create any sort of injustice.

“So, Oshiomhole is on his own in this whole thing. There is no presidency’s support for him to refuse candidate, those who won elections and give wrong candidates who didn’t win election. This is the matter and I will simply say that he is not with the consent of the presidency, he is on his own.

“I also requested that Oshiomhole must learn to respect the rule of law and obey court orders where they apply. This issue of treating court orders as tissue papers must stop, it doesn’t reflect the image of our party, he must act quickly to fix the integrity of this party because his coming in ought to have brought joy into the party and not sadness.

Asked if the APC will disintegrate from Oshiomhole’s actions, he said, “Well, APC will not disintegrate for as long as the person, Muhammadu Buhari, is still the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and remains the leader of this party.

“But we cannot give that credit to the chairman. He cannot disintegrate this party, the party is still intact, just that many people are hurt. Since his inception and after this primaries, we are losing almost five million voters because of anger, protest everywhere and he needs to be called to order, he has to respect the rule of law, respect court orders and do the right thing – obey court orders where applicable and not turn himself into INECâ€.

Also asked if Oshiomhole goes ahead to present Hope Uzodinma as the bona fide candidate of the party in Imo, he said the party chairman dare not.

“He cannot be standing on Hope Uzodinma because that man did not win election, you cannot compare somebody who won 265,000 votes with somebody who won 7,000 votes.

“He (Hope Uzodinma) never won election and you cannot impose a candidate who is unacceptable to the people on the people. That is how serious the matter is now. So he (Oshiomhole) should do the right thing and I have advised him severally to do the right thing before he creates more disaffections in our party.

Asked what would be the implication for the party if Oshiomhole went ahead to present Uzodinma to INEC, he replied again, “He can’t! I don’t think the National Working Committee will do that because in the first place, the National Working Committee sent a 13-man delegation who conducted election and 12 of them signed proving that Uche Nwosu won the election with 265,000 votes as against Hope Uzodinma who got less than 7,000 votes; so they can’t do that.

“And there is a letter to that effect from the National Working Committee, saying Uche Nwosu won, there is a Certificate of Return given to Uche Nwosu, there is a police report saying Uche Nwosu, there is INEC report saying Uche Nwosu. So nobody can do that and if they do that that must be the worst imposition in the history of Nigeria.

The governor, however, wrote off insinuations that if things go astray, he will defect from the party to SDP.

“SDP? How can I build a house and leave it for someone else? I am in APC, I founded the APC, I gave the name APC and so this is our party and we must continue with the party and build the party for victory, he stated.

Jordanian Minister Resigns Over Flash Flood Tragedy

Jordan’s Tourism Minister Lina Annab, has tendered her resignation after the government was accused of negligence in flash floods that killed 21 people, mostly school children.

“In view of the painful situation” in Jordan, Annab tweeted on Thursday that she had presented her resignation to Prime Minister Omar al-Razzaz so that he might “make the appropriate decision.’’

The government gave no immediate comment.

Thirty seven children from a private school based in the capital Amman and seven of their teachers were on a trip to a hot springs area near the Dead Sea on Oct. 25, when they were swept away by floods triggered by torrential rains.

Several lawmakers had called for Annab and Education Minister Azmi Mahafzah to face a no-confidence vote in parliament over alleged negligence in the fatal incident, one of the deadliest weather-related disasters in Jordan.

The government has blamed the school for the incident, with Mahafzah saying it violated safety regulations that bar access to dangerous areas in bad weather.

The school changed the destination of the trip, approved by the Education Ministry, from the area of al-Zarqa in north-eastern Jordan to the flood-prone Dead Sea area, according to the education minister.

Buhari Assures Women Of Increased Appointment

President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday pledged to continue to be fair and just to women in terms of appointments and realisation of the 35 per cent affirmative action.

The president made the pledge during an audience with the leadership of the National Council for Women Societies (NCWS) at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

He said that his administration would look into possible appointment of women ministers to replace those that left the cabinet recently.

He also said that soft loans would be made available to women for agricultural activities.

The president promised to address the deficit in women appointments by appointing more women into the cabinet following the demand by the NCWS for more women representation in the Federal cabinet.

“I have appreciated the subtle and timely threat you have made; I said timely because you waited until campaigns are about to start, you mobilised yourselves to come and threaten.

“I hope you are being very fair to me; I will leave you to the public to judge. You said I haven’t replaced the casualties from my council about the ladies.

I’m sure you are following up (Finance and Women Affairs).

“One applied to leave because I think she wants to be the governor of the state and one failed to meet the government requirement of declaring NYSC certificate.

“I replaced them with other ladies; so, I don’t know where I went wrong there?

“This deficit in women appointments I will look at it and the road is clear; election is coming perhaps I will get a few more advisers, ministers from the women.

“I thank you most sincerely for coming to see me.’’

On the rate of sexual violence and abuse in society, particularly at the Internally Displaced Persons’ camps (IDPs), the president said he had already directed the security agencies to immediately address the problem.

He said the security agencies had been directed to bring to book all those implicated in the dastardly acts.

“I have taken note of the observations you made on the abuse of women in the IDPs camps.

“I’m encouraging the police to be much more efficient and I think something is being done about it.’’

The president also pledged to ensure that women farmers benefit from Federal Government’s agricultural loans and other programmes to boost food production in the country.

He, therefore, advised the women to form themselves into cooperative societies to enable them benefit from such loans.

In her remarks, the President of the NCWS, Mrs Gloria Laraba, commended the Buhari-led administration for implementing laudable programmes that aim to uplift the quality of life of the citizens.

According to her, the Trader Moni programme is a worthwhile intervention to keep the spirit of entrepreneurship alive in local communities and help petty traders grow their micro businesses.

“We are pleased that these initiatives are beneficial to many of our women one way or another.

“This is because we are in the front-end of the concerned activities and will be impacted the most,’’ she said.

Laraba called on the president to encourage the Nigeria police to strengthen its investigation and prosecution of sexual violence through the creation of a new department to arrest the menace across the country.

She also urged the president to appoint more women as members of the Federal Cabinet to replace those that left recently.
