Ganduje dismisses the 4 clips showing him ‘rousingly’ collecting dollars; President Buhari receives an attestation to his ‘lost’ WAEC certificate | Other top stories of the week

These are the stories that drove conversation this week.

After killing one of the two aid workers with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) Hauwa Amina Liman, members of a factional Boko Haram sect, ISWAP, who kidnapped Leah Sharibu, demanded N100 billion ransom for her release.

A diplomatic source who spoke with them, claiming to be involved in the negotiation for the release of the schoolgirl, said the government was, however, considering the other implications of giving such a huge sum of money to the terrorists.

“But we are aware that the terrorist organisation holding her is demanding N100 billion.  Though no amount is too much to get the soul of one innocent person out of danger, I think the government of Nigeria is considering many things, the sources said.

As the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) began a three-day mass protest from Suleja in Niger, to Abuja, there were reports of clashes with security forces that led to deaths. The clash continued on the third day.

A spokesperson for the group, Abdullahi Musa said, “I will just say that the people attacking us have a presidential directive that is why these attacks are inevitable. We had announced that we will undertake an annual religious trek. We had also said that we will start from outside Abuja and end in Abuja.

In the light of protests, the Police in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) said it arrested 400 Shi’ites members.

While the U.S. “urge Government of Nigeria authorities to conduct a thorough investigation of the events and to take appropriate action to hold accountable those responsible for violations of Nigerian law” the Nigerian Army posted a now-deleted video on Twitter of the U.S. President Donald Trump saying “I will tell you this, anybody throwing stones, rocks, like they did to Mexico and the Mexican military…we will consider that a firearm…We are going to consider and I told them to consider it a rifle,” with the caption “please watch and make your deductions.â€

Former Minister of Works and Housing, Anthony Akhakon “Tony” Anenih was confirmed dead by his family.

The PDP Presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar; Senate President, Bukola Saraki; President Muhammadu Buhari; Senator Shehu Sani; Speaker Yakubu Dogara and others reacted to his death.

He was aged 85.

A former Chief of Defence Staff, Lt. General Ipoola Akinrinade has described the criticism of President Muhammadu Buhari over his claim that his West African School Certificate (WASC), was with the Military authorities, as most annoying and an insult to the Nigerian Army.

Akinrinade stressed that at the time Buhari joined the Armed forces ‘there were no cutting corners.’

And finally, the West African Examination Council (WAEC) presented the attestation certificate and confirmation of school certificate result to President Buhari.

Buhari said this confirms that the exam body has not lost its integrity.

The meeting between the Economic Management Team (EMT) and State Governors presided over by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo over the new national minimum wage failed to reach common ground.

The NLC, after this, decided to increase the demand to N66,500 but were stopped from going ahead with a planned strike action by the Industrial Court in Abuja.

The governors on their own part said they could only pay N22,500 as development is more important than wages – which was rejected by the Federal Government.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) released its area of focus of its presidential campaign at a press conference in Abuja, promising that the party will focus on solutions, instead of allowing itself “be dragged into the marshes of propaganda, smear campaign, lies and deceit of the fading, discredited and rejected APC.

See five things we learnt from this.

Days after an investigative hearing by the Kano House of Assembly on the veracity of the videos showing the Governor, Abdullahi Ganduje collecting kickbacks in dollars from contractors in the state commenced, the fourth clip was released.

(function(d, s, id) { var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0]; if (d.getElementById(id)) return; js = d.createElement(s); js.id = id; js.src = ‘https://connect.facebook.net/en_US/sdk.js#xfbml=1&version=v3.2’; fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs);}(document, ‘script’, ‘facebook-jssdk’));

And then appearing before the investigative committee of the Kano House of Assembly, represented by the state’s Commissioner for Information, Muhammad Garba, Ganduje said he never collected bribe from any contractor.

The Nigerian Army recovered the body of the missing retired Major General Idris Alkali from an abandoned well in Guchwet, Jos South Local Government, Plateau.

Garrison Commander 3 Division Nigeria Army, Brig. Gen. Umar Mohammed, who disclosed the information said the operation was jointly carried out by men of the Nigeria Police and the Fire Service, adding that with the recovery of the body, they were left with one task to ensure that those who committed the crime were punished.

President Muhammadu Buhari ordered the Executive Secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), Prof. Usman Yusuf to proceed on administrative leave.

The order which is contained in a statement said the leave was to ensure unfettered investigation by the Independent Fact-Finding Panel.

In reaction, Yusuf filed a suit before a Federal High Court, Abuja, against the Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole and the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Abubakar Malami challenging his suspension.

President Buhari said his administration deserves commendation for its achievements thus far, despite the seven-month delay by the National Assembly to pass the 2018 budget.

Buhari who said he personally felt very disappointed about the issue, blamed the delay in the completion of projects across the country on the late passage of the budget by the lawmakers.

“If the National Assembly takes seven months to pass a budget, then we should be commended for the much that we have achieved, and can still achieve, Presidential media adviser, Femi Adesina said.

Ganduje Fails To Appear Before Probe Panel, Dismisses Videos As Fake

Ahmad Tijjani Abdul

Kano – Kano State governor,  Abdullahi Umar Ganduje on Friday failed to appear before the Kano House of Assembly Ad-Hoc committee investigating the authenticity of a bribery video that showed him allegedly collecting wads of dollar bills from unknown contractors.

An online newspaper, Daily Nigeria had on October 14 and 15 exclusively published two videos showing Mr Ganduje allegedly receiving a bribe in dollars.

Sequel to the dust raised by the videos, the Kano House of Assembly, under the leadership of Alhaji Kabiru Alhassan Rurum constituted a committee on October 15 to establish the authenticity of the videos.

Consequently, the publisher/editor-in-chief of Daily Nigeria, Jaafar Jaafar testified before the committee on October 15 where he insisted that the videos were genuine and expressed readiness to swear by the Quran to convince ‘doubting Thomases.’

Ganduje, who instead details two of his commissioners, Mohammed Garba, Information and Culture,  and Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice dismissed the viral video as fake.

Garba, who also doubles as the government spokesman explained that his principal absence before the probe panel was hinged on multiple options provided in the invitation letter.

He said, “we were able to read the invitation extended to His Excellency, and after analysing the content of the letter critically we were able to identify three options. Either His Excellency responds in writing, sends a representative or appears himself.â€

Mohamad Garba, who read a written response of Governor Ganduje before the committee said, he did not collect bribe, and would never collect bribe.

Garba stressed: “His Excellency has categorically and unapologetically denied collection of bribe as alleged by Daily Nigeria, and his Excellency has not collected and will never collect bribe. The allegations are injurious and damaging to his personality .â€

He maintained that the alleged video was false, designed to tarnished his image, aimed at reducing his popularity, especially at this critical moment general election is approaching.

Garba, therefore, cautioned the Assembly to be wary of Daily Nigeria publisher,  Jaafar Jaafar,  adding that his antecedents in the recent past on how he allegedly maligned and defamed the personalities of the Emir of Kano,  Malam Muhammad Sanusi II, and former Governor Ibrahim Shekarau was still fresh in memory.

Responding,  the chairman of the seven-man Ad-hoc committee,  Alhaji Baffa  Baba Dan’agundi said they would scrutinise the written response by the governor and arranged sitting next Tuesday for a Graphics expert to authenticate the video before Mr  Ganduje, Jaafar Jaafar lawyers at a secret location.

Babba Dan’agundi, therefore, appealed to the working journalist in the state to ensure fair and just reportage of the committee’s proceeding.

William Ibori: The Final Goodbye

Victor Otuya, Macaulay Wilson and Ben Ndubuwa

High Chief William Boyi  Agbakanya Ibori,  the Unugblogodo of Oghara Kingdom and elder brother to former Delta State governor , Chief James Onanefe Ibori, yesterday bade the world  a final goodbye when he was interred in his country home  at Ogharefe, in Ethiope West Local Government Area of Delta State.

Family members, dignitaries and well wishers led by Governor of Delta State,  His Excellency, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, HE Godwin Obaseki, governor of Edo State, former governor Emmanuel Eweta Uduaghan,  His Excellency Chief James Onanefe Ibori, Deputy Governor of Delta State, HE  Kingsley Burutu Otuaro, HE Amos Utuama and others  could not hold back their tears as Chief Ibori’s casket was being lowered into the grave.

Governor of Delta State,  Senator Okowa, described the late William Ibori as a man of many parts whose life imparted many people in different field of human endeavour.

He said the late Ibori was a man of great courage and conviction who was not just a pillar of support to his quest to be governor in 2014 but was a fountain of wisdom from which he drank.

In a touching tribute,  His Excellency,  Chief James Onanefe Ibori former governor of Delta State and brother to the deceased  described the late elder statesman  as  ‘ a brother like no other ‘. He said:  “If I  had the gift of a poet,  I  would have eulogies you in rhyme. Where I endowed with the talent of a playwright, I would have scripted your life in a play to be dramatised for humanity to watch. Nonetheless, I will tell your story in a tribute as a narrative of a life well lived, a life of selfless devotion to the attainment of the noblest of ideals.

I knew you when I was a child and when our father went the way of all mortals you stood the gap and held me by the hand as I went through life. You were a father,  a brother, a friend, a mentor, a teacher and many more to me.

You provided leadership to our family and you were a perfect symbol of dualities of life.  Your philosophical disposition expressed in the wisdom from which we all tapped remains unparalleled. You taught us to love unconditional. You taught us tenacity believing as did Abraham Lincoln that ‘only the test of fire made the gold ‘. Your wisdom and support saw me riding the waves in all my endeavours and climaxing in my making a mark in politics.”

Chief James Ibori also said, that his late elder brother stood by him in his moment of travail, remarking that, himself, Oghara Kingdom and humanity will miss  him.

Former governor Emmanuel Uduaghan, in his tribute maintained that Chief William Ibori gave him strong support in his quest to becoming the governor of Delta State in 2007.

His eldest son Kingsley Ibori, described his father as a courageous and truly beloved father, while his sister Mrs Christy Ibori Ibie said the job of being the patriarch of the Ibori family landed on the shoulder of his late elder brother very early and he handled it very pleasantly with tenacity and wisdom.

Born on 25th April, 1942, Chief William Ibori attended CMS Primary School, Otefe – Oghara,   between 1949 and 1955. After helping his parents briefly in their farm work, he proceeded to Lagos on 3rd March, 1969 to seek for greener pasture. A man of destiny he was, he easily got employed in the Nigerian Army Pay & Records Department as a Clerical Officer. At the beginning of the present democratic dispensation in 1999, Chief William Ibori retired home to join the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He stood solidly behind his younger brother, Chief James Onanefe Ibori, in the event leading to his election as the executive governor of Delta State in 1999.

Chief Ibori,  gave up the ghost around 11pm on Wednesday 10th July,  2018  night after watching the world cup match between England and Croatia.

His death threw Oghara Kingdom, Ethiope West local government area and indeed Delta State into mournful mood.

A member of the Delta State Elders Council,  Chief Ibori will be remembered for his  generosity, courage and wisdom.

Politics: Obama zings hecklers at a campaign rally for Florida Democrats

Barack Obama.

"Don't come hollering here," Obama said after he was interrupted by a heckler at his campaign rally in Miami, Florida.

  • Hecklers interrupted former President Barack Obama multiple times during a speech at his campaign rally in support of the Democratic gubernatorial candidate, Andrew Gillum on Friday.
  • "Listen, here's the deal," Obama said after he was interrupted. "If you support the other candidates, then you should go support the other candidates."
  • Obama's supporters drowned out shouts from hecklers by chanting "bring it home," the catchphrase Gillum, who is also the mayor of Tallahassee, called up on the campaign trail.
  • Trump took a rhetorical swing at Obama on Friday, claiming his predecessor had "a very small crowd."

Hecklers interrupted former President Barack Obama multiple times during a speech at his campaign rally in support of the Democratic gubernatorial candidate, Andrew Gillum on Friday.

"Listen, here's the deal," Obama said after he was interrupted. "If you support the other candidates, then you should go support the other candidates."

"One of the things I never understood was, why, if you're supporting the other guy, you come to my rally," Obama asked amid cheers from the crowd. "Go to their rally. Go talk about what you're for. Don't come hollering here."

Obama's supporters drowned out shouts from hecklers by chanting "bring it home," the catchphrase Gillum, who is also the mayor of Tallahassee, called up on the campaign trail.

"You know what, it's an old playbook," Obama said after another protester interrupted him. "It's one that the powerful and privileged turn to whenever control starts slipping away."

"They'll get folks riled up just to protect their power and their privilege, even when it hurts the country, even when it puts people at risk," Obama said.

"It's as cynical as politics gets. But in four days, in four days Florida, you can reject that kind of politics."

Obama campaigned in Miami to support Florida Democrats for the November 6 midterm election — among those candidates: gubernatorial candidate Andrew Gillum and Sen. Bill Nelson, who is vying for a Senate seat in the state.

Speaking to a crowd of around 3,000 people, Obama also took shots at President Donald Trump by accusing him of "lying" and "fear-mongering."

Meanwhile, Trump was out on a campaign trail of his own, hitting multiple states in the final days leading up to the Tuesday election. Trump took a rhetorical swing at Obama on Friday, claiming his predecessor had "a very small crowd."

Trump, who is repeatedly called out for an unprecedented number of falsehoods and misleading statements, accused Obama of being dishonest. "Unlike President Obama," Trump said, "we live under a different mantra. It's called promises made, promises kept."

One estimate shows that least 20 million people have voted in the election, with some states' early voting numbers on track to exceed the 2014 election, CNN reported.

This election cycle has already set a new financial record, with campaigns and groups expected to spend over $5.2 billion, according to a study cited by CNBC.

Group Raises Alarm Over Alleged Plot To Rig 2019 Elections

inec

ABUJA – A Civil Society Organisation (CSO) under the auspices of Concerned Nigerians has raised an alarm over alleged tendencies by some persons within the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to electronically rig the 2019 general elections.

Deji Adeyanju, the National Coordinator, Concerned Nigerians a Civil Society Organisation, an advocate group for citizens rights and good governance at all levels gave the warning yesterday at a press conference in Abuja.

According to him, “A reliable source within the electoral umpire has informed the group that the e-collation portal of INEC has been tampered with in a way that would no longer show the location, the time, and the date results from each polling units were fed into the system.â€

He, however, expressed worries that the implication of such alteration was that anyone who had access to the e-collation platform could input unverifiable figures into the system as genuine election results from obscure locations without a trace.

He said: “Concerned Nigerians wants to use this medium to call the attention of Nigerians and the International Community to fresh attempts by some individuals at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to electronically rig the 2019 General Elections.

“We have been reliably informed by our sources within INEC that the e-Collation portal of the Commission has been tampered with as it no longer shows location, time and date of collation of results.

“The validity of results of the 2019 elections will be tied to the credibility of the e-Collation portal, especially the imputing of results real-time from polling Units across the country.

“Therefore, if the e-Collation will not reflect time, date and location where results are entered from; it means the outcome of the elections will not be credible.

“If INEC did not restore the date, time and location mechanism back into the e-Portal, the implication is that someone can sit at home and manipulate results by entering concocted figures, he said.

Adeyanju also faulted what he called unrestricted access to the e-collation portal that the 12 national commissioners of INEC enjoyed.

He expressed worry that such level of access could pave way for some unscrupulous characters amongst them to view the results collation process from the portal’s backend, in real-time, and possibly divulge same to their accomplices in various political parties before the final results were announced.

“We are worried that if unlimited access is given to the 12 National Commissioners to view the e-Collation of results as currently obtained, they will compromise the 2019 elections since many of them are APC sympathisers.

“We call on INEC to review the existing structure of its election management team by redeploying Mr A.T Yusuf, the current Director of Operation who continues to work with Amina Zakari on strategies to manipulate the election outcome in 2019.

“Both individuals are working closely with the Chief of Staff to the President and other members of President Buhari’s cabinet members, Adeyanju said.

The group, therefore, urged INEC to restore its former e-collation system that guarantees all electronically collated results on their portal reflect the time of input, location and date.

“What we are simply saying is that INEC should be truly independent and ensure that every vote counts, and let Nigerians vote who they want to lead them to come 2019.

“It should be neutral and not aid or be an ally to any political party or politicians, in order for us to have free, fair and credible polls, he said.

Apapa gridlock: NARTO Tasks Police On Security Of Cargoes

Sequel to the Apapa gridlock that has made container laden trucks vulnerable to vandals, Mr Mohammed Inuwa has advised the Nigeria Police to beam their search-light on container laden trucks.
Inuwa, who is the Vice Chairman, of National Association of Road Transport Owner (NARTO) gave this advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Lagos.
He said the incessant parking of container laden trucks along the roads outside the ports facility while in queue had made cargoes prone to vandalism.
Responding to a case of truckers that were arrested because a container under their care was allegedly burgled, Inuwa said the police should be more responsive to their responsibility.
NAN reports that Mr Emma Itodo, a truck driver, Mr Ahamed Dada a truck conductor, and Mr Gab Opara, the escort were arrested on Monday by their transporter in connection with vandalised container under their care.
The NARTO chairman said the truckers might want to ease themselves or had fallen asleep in the night when the incident was allegedly committed without their knowledge.
“The gridlock has made cargo laden trucks to stay far away from the ports area where there is police presence to areas like the Ijora and Carter Bridge where there are less security presence.
“These truckers are family men, but look at it now, they have been in custody since Monday probably for no fault of theirs, Inuwa said.
He appealed to the police and other security operatives to keep watch on the containers as most of them were carrying goods worth millions of naira on transit.
NAN reports that the arrested men were conveying a 1×40 ft of benny seed container belonging to Olam Nigeria Limited for export before it was burgled.
The truckers were trying to fulfill their bail conditions at the Ebute Meta Magistrates Court.
