The new Maggi advert valorizes women’s suffering and turns them into multitasking machines

The fact that the Maggi brand has survived against a tumultuous economic climate, introducing new variants of the seasoning into the market and latching onto the zeitgeist of social media only shows its resilience. More of this can be attributed to brand loyalty, inspired from the food television show Maggi Kitchen hosted by the ever-joyful veteran chef Iyabo Lawani around the early 2000s. Over the years, the company has churned out adverts for promotion of new products and granted endorsement deals to pop stars like Tiwa Savage, media personality Toke Makinwa and blogger Sisi Yemmie.

Women are primarily the target audience of Maggi, a brand manifesto built on conservative values and lionizes the traditional Nigerian family. The company just recently launched an advert titled #SheMakesADifference, which isn’t any different from its past catalogue of adverts portraying women as warmly domesticated and caregivers, mythologising Maggi as a secret weapon that binds families over sumptuous foods. But in this blazing age of women empowerment and feminist conversations percolating beyond social media, Maggi’s new campaign falls immensely short.

You’re The Difference We’ve Been Waiting For.👑 💫 #SheMakesADifference

A post shared by MAGGI NIGERIA (@maggi_nigeria) on Oct 30, 2018 at 3:40am PDT

The beginning of the video shows a woman cooking in the kitchen, reaching for Maggi cubes in a jar and for a bit of complexity, she’s rendered into other facets: slayer and a boss lady at her office giving a presentation, then checking Instagram for new recipes and making market errands and ending up back home as a kitchen grandmaster, aiming to please her family as she makes a delightful dish of jollof rice. All this is happening while her husband offers nothing tangible, lurking like a shadow and only revealing himself when the food is served. “I like what I do,â€ she says finally, with a smile, as if to reassure us that her joyful participation in gendered domestic labour won’t make her combust, or push her beyond her endurance and limits.

But we know this is a lie, and that there’s only so much women can take before they crack because they are humans. The advert valorizes women’s suffering and labour, underpinned by gender roles that Maggi has foisted as a mission statement for years. Although allowing women to exist outside of a domestic environment, the advert still prioritises and places more value on the woman-in-the-kitchen/superwoman archetype, the woman who toils and juggles the demands of family life and other responsibilities especially without external help.

#SheMakesADifference has drawn responses on social media, more valorizing and romanticising of women’s unsupported hard work and people suddenly remembering their mothers. But some have called out the advert’s glamourisation of feminine labour, and rightly so. I do not see Maggi, in the future, adjusting its ethos to reflect our current cultural upheaval because the brand is largely patronised by die-hard conservatives. And Maggi knows this, which is why it continues to cater towards the gendered dynamics that makes it thrive.

Leicester pay emotional tribute to late owner Vichai

Leicester plays huddle ahead of the English Premier League football match between between Cardiff City and Leicester City at Cardiff City Stadium in Cardiff, south Wales on November 3, 2018. Oli SCARFF / AFP

Leicester’s grief-stricken players paid an emotional tribute to Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha ahead of their Premier League clash at Cardiff on Saturday as the devastated club returned to action for the first time since their owner’s tragic death.

Thai billionaire Vichai was among five people killed when his helicopter crashed outside Leicester’s King Power Stadium following last Saturday’s match against West Ham.

The horrific accident triggered a week of mourning in Leicester and around the world of football.

Vichai was adored in Leicester after his eight-year reign peaked in 2016 when the 5,000-1 outsiders became Premier League champions in astonishing style.

With Vichai’s funeral underway on Saturday in Bangkok, Leicester headed to Cardiff for a match that served as a chance to honour their late owner and begin the healing process.

Cardiff ensured Leicester’s grieving fans and players were received with sympathy and understanding.

The Bluebirds introduced the hashtag ‘TogetherForLeicester’ for the game to show unity following a tragedy that rendered the action on the pitch irrelevant.

Cardiff owner Vincent Tan paid tribute to Vichai in the matchday programme.

“This week the thoughts and prayers of Cardiff City Football Club have been with our friends at Leicester City,” the message read.

“Today, in the saddest of circumstances, we stand alongside them in memory of those lost last weekend.

“The Leicester players, ahead of that memorable title-winning season, needed to have belief instilled in them.

“It emanated from Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha. The world of football lost a true pioneer and visionary seven days ago, though one whose legacy will live forever.”

Sombre Leicester supporters unfurled a Thai flag saying ‘Khun Vichai Then Now and Forever Your Ambition Achieved Our Dreams’ outside the away end before the turnstiles opened.

Once inside the ground, most Leicester fans wore white T-shirts emblazoned with the slogan ‘The Boss’ and a picture of Vichai on the front, and on the back ‘Khun Vichai You Will Be Forever In Our Hearts’.

The players warmed up in similar T-shirts over their training gear.

One of the most poignant moments came when Leicester’s players turned to the Cardiff supporters a few yards along the stand from their own fans and were greeted by huge applause, reflecting the universal sympathy for the heart-broken team.

A giant Thai flag with both clubs’ crests on it and in giant lettering ‘RIP Vichai’ was passed from the home fans to the visiting supporters.

A wreath on the field ahead of kick-off, with Leicester’s entire squad and club staff linking arms on the centre circle for an impeccably observed minute’s silence before the game, while fans held their scarves aloft in tribute to their much-loved owner.

Three minutes into the match, Leicester’s fans broke into a rendition of ‘When You’re Smiling’, the anthem that sound-tracked happier days during the club’s title triumph.

School Sports: Ebonyi To Punish Officials Aiding Irregularities

Ebonyi state government

The Ebonyi Ministry of Sports says it will severely punish its officials who aid irregularities during the forthcoming school sports competition in the state.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the competition which was last held in the state in 2008 will commence on Nov. 5 at the Local Government Areas (LGA) and close with competitions at the state level from Nov. 21 to Nov. 25.

The Commissioner for Sports and Youth Development, Mr Charlse Akpuenika, who gave the warning on Saturday while briefing newsmen, said that the ministry was optimistic of a hitch-free competition.

Akpuenika warned the various committee members and officials not to engage in irregularities, urging them to discharge their duties with honesty and professionalism.

“During the last David Umahi Tertiary Institution Games (DUMTIGA), one of the officials compromised, substituting passports and aiding the involvement of mercenaries.

“He was aware of his wrong actions but we warn that any repeat of such occurrences will be met with stiff sanctions to deter others, he said.

The commissioner noted that the competition would involve pupils and students of primary and secondary schools in the 13 LGAs of the state in both public and private levels.

“The primary school category will feature football, athletics, sack race and table tennis, while the secondary school will have football, basketball, volleyball, wrestling, taekwondo, scrabble, chess, handball, badminton, weightlifting, table tennis, and athletics.

“The successful teams from the LGAs will qualify for the zonal meets with successful teams ultimately qualifying to compete at state level, Akpuenika said.

He said that stringent efforts were made to ensure a successful organisation of the competition with active involvement and consultation with sports stakeholders in the LGAs, zonal and state levels.

“We constituted a joint committee with agencies under the state ministry of education, including the Universal Basic Education Board (UBEB) and the Secondary Education Board (SEB).

“The committee toured the councils and zones across the state, interfacing with headmasters, headmistresses and principals of schools among other stakeholders to fashion ways of ensuring a successful competition.

“The sports ministry’s staff also interfaced with education secretaries of the councils among other sports stakeholders to create the desired awareness and the results have been fruitful, he said.

He thanked Gov. David Umahi for his love in revatalising sports in the state, noting that he released over N52 million to ensure the organisation of several competitions in the state before the end of 2018.

“We have successfully organised the DUMTIGA Games and will organise the “Akubaraoha Super Cup and the David Umahi Paramilitary Games among other competitions, he said.

Chief Sabinus Nwankwagu, Commissioner for Education, said that the school sports competition was ideal as it would enhance the mental and physical capabilities of pupils and students.

“All work and no play makes children dull as education and sports activate the minds and intellectual capabilities of the young ones.

“Top sports personalities such as Augustine Jay-Jay Okocha and Kanu Nwankwo among others were discovered from competitions such as the school sports and we hope to discover such talents in Ebonyi, he said.

He urged the relevant committees for the competition to ensure that budding talents were tapped and harnessed to ensure equitable representation of the state in various competitions in the country.

Chief Nicodemus Omenka, UBEB Secretary in the state, pledged that educational authorities would cooperate to ensure that the competition met required standard.

“The governor has maintained a top-level standard in his interventions in all areas of the state as we seek the cooperation of all to achieve this objective, he said.

Lagos Int’l Trade Fair: Foreign Exhibitors Explore Nigeria’s Business Potential

Some international exhibitors at the ongoing 2018 Lagos International Trade Fair were optimistic of exploring more patronage during the 10-day annual exhibition.

The exhibitors, who spoke in interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Saturday, said that they envisaged hitch-free trading sessions just like the previous years.

NAN reports that the annual trade fair, which is in its 32nd year, is organised by the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) and reputed to be the largest international trade fair in Nigeria.

About 200 foreign exhibitors from 16 countries are participating at this year’s fair, which has an average of 2000 exhibitors and over 500,000 expected visitors.

The countries represented at the fair include: China, Japan, India, Indonesia, Ghana, Egypt, Jordan, Pakistan, Turkey, Cameroun, Kenya and Singapore.

Other countries are: Jamaica, Republic of Benin, South Africa and the European Union.

Tatyana Buchak, a Ukrainian Manufacturer of  “My Coffee’’, who had been in the country for close to 10 years, said she looked forward to connecting with more business-inclined persons for the furtherance of her business.

Buchak said Nigeria was a good place for business to thrive, considering its population of about 180 million people.

“I am looking forward to meeting many business-inclined persons from different countries so as to expand my business and I know this is the best avenue for that,’’ she said.

Also, Chiharu Yamamura, Deputy Trade Commissioner, Japan External Trade Organisation (JETRO), said he expected women to embrace the special sales promotion on Japanese health and beauty products exhibited at the fair.

Yamamura said that Nigerian women were known to be keen about their beauty and family’s health.

“Hence, I hope that those products will solve most problems confronting them in their health and beauty regimen’’.

“We have been coming to the fair since 2014 and this is the first time we will have promotional sales on our beauty and health products.

“There are a good number of Japanese companies present here, which are selling their products at subsidised rates. The products include hair extensions, shampoo, cosmetics, hair colouration and a lot more.

“I know that Nigerian women are very busy but have very keen interest in maintaining their beauty and sound health, so we are out for such women,’’ the Japanese official said.

Another exhibitor from China, Miao Shujin, said he had been an ardent exhibitor for years and hoped for a secure and neat environment for uninterrupted business transactions.

Shujin said that the Lagos international trade fair remained the largest fair in West Africa where businesses are created and improved on.

“The previous fairs have been very impactful. I look forward to huge sales period in a tidy and secure environment,’’ he said.

Veana Nednyhaico-Ucer from Ukraine Chambers of Commerce said she was exhibiting at the fair for the first time.

Nednyhaico-Ucer said that she had come for a feasibility study of the country in order to facilitate future business transactions with Nigerians.

According to her, Nigeria happens to be the biggest country in West Africa with people who had huge business acumen.

She said that she hoped to give a report of proceedings at the fair to Ukrainian Government.

“I have only come to observe the Nigerian business terrain for future business transactions with Nigerians and some other countries.

“This is a place we can share business ideas. This is a place we can market Ukrainian products.

“We manufacture a lot of goods. We have so much electrical products, raw materials for further production and more; what we need is a market for them,’’ she said.

Nednyhaico-Ucer noted that many Nigerians studies in Ukraine and in 2018, no fewer than 4,000 Nigerians graduated from various Ukrainian tertiary institutions.

She said that this was an indication that the two countries could be compatible doing business together.

Also speaking with NAN, a Ghanaian Exhibitor, Lisa Efua, said her expectations are primarily to learn new business strategies which would be unraveled during the seminar sessions.

“I want to learn more business strategies to move my business forward,’’ Efua said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the 2018 Lagos International Trade Fair commenced on Nov. 2 and would come to an end on Nov. 11.

Man-eating tiger shot dead in India after massive hunt

This handout photo released by the Maharashtra Forest Department on November 3, 2018 shows the dead body of the tiger known to hunters as T1 after being shot in the forests of India's Maharashtra state near Yavatmal. A man-eating tiger that claimed more than a dozen victims in two years has been shot dead in India, sparking controversy over the legality of its killing. Handout / MAHARASHTRA FOREST DEPARTMENT / AFP

A man-eating tiger that claimed more than a dozen victims in two years has been shot dead in India, sparking controversy over the legality of its killing.

One of India’s most high-profile tiger hunts in decades ended Friday night when the mother of two 10-month old cubs — known to hunters as T1 but Avni to wildlife lovers — was shot dead in the jungles of Maharashtra state.

A team of more than 150 people had spent months searching for T1, using a paraglider and dozens of infrared cameras while sharpshooters had ridden on the backs of elephants.

However disputes quickly erupted after the killing as media reports said the tiger was shot in Yavatmal forest with no attempt to tranquilize her.

India’s Supreme Court had issued a hunting order for T1 — blamed for 13 deaths since June 2016 — in September, ruling that she could be killed if tranquilizers failed. Several appeals were made against the death sentence.

The tiger was killed at night, when tranquilizers are not allowed to be used, according to the Times of India and other media outlets.

T1 is said to have been shot dead by Ashgar Ali Khan, son of India’s most famous hunter Nawab Shafath Ali Khan, who was meant to be leading the hunt but was not present Friday night.

Forestry officials and the hunter did not answer calls to give details of the hunt.

Principal Chief Conservator of Forests A.K. Mishra told The Indian Express newspaper that a forest staffer had managed to dart the tiger with a tranquilizer at around 11.00 pm.

“But she charged at the team, forcing Ashgar to shoot in self-defence,” he said. “The tigress lay dead in a single shot.”

– Self-defence or ‘murder’? –
However Mishra’s account was contradicted by other reports, while many groups condemned the way the killing was conducted.

The Times of India quoted sources involved in the hunt as saying it looked as though a tranquilizer dart had been put into the tiger’s corpse after the killing. The sources said the dart had not been fired.

Forestry officials acknowledged to Indian media that no vet was present during the hunt, as required by the Supreme Court order.

Jerryl Banait, a vet and activist in Karnataka state who had launched appeals against the order, described the shooting as “cold-blooded murder”.

“Avni was killed illegally satisfying a hunter’s lust for blood,” said the Indian branch of the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) group.

It said India’s Wildlife Protection Act and National Tiger Conservation Authority rules had been flouted, calling for the matter to be “investigated and treated as a wildlife crime”.

The tiger’s body has been taken to a zoo in the city of Nagpur for a post-mortem.

Despite the disputed circumstances, villages around the town of Pandharkawda celebrated the death with relief.

T1 claimed her first victim, a woman whose body was found in a cotton field, in June 2016. Since then most of the dead were male herders.

India has launched a major campaign to boost tiger numbers. At the last tiger census in 2014 the number had risen to more than 2,200 from a low of less than 1,500.

But urban spread as the population of 1.25 billion grows has increasingly eaten into the territory of wild animals.

Endangered elephants and tigers kill on average one person a day, according to government figures.
