8 high-protein breakfasts that aren’t all about eggs

But most guys aren’t even coming close to that number. For instance, the average guy consumes two-thirds of his daily protein after 6 p.m., according to research at the University of Illinois.

Every man needs protein at breakfast. In fact, consuming roughly 30 grams at your morning meal will optimize muscle growth, and help keep you full until lunch.

But most guys aren’t even coming close to that number. For instance, the average guy consumes two-thirds of his daily protein after 6 p.m., according to research at the University of Illinois.

Perhaps that’s because a high-protein breakfast often means one that’s built around eggs. Lots of them.

Don’t Throw Away Colostrum, It Contains Antibodies Against Diseases- Paediatrician

UCTH

A Consultant Paediatrician, Prof. Emmanuel Ekanem, on Saturday decried the practice of throwing away the colostrum after the delivery of newborns, saying it contains antibodies to protect newborns against disease.

Ekanem of the Department of Paediatrics, University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH), Calabar, Cross Rivers, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that it was a wrong practice some mothers still indulged in.

According to Wikipaedia, Colostrum is the first form of milk produced by the mammary glands of mammals immediately following delivery of the newborn.

“Most species will generate colostrum just prior to giving birth. Colostrum contains antibodies to protect the newborn against disease, it said.

Colostrum is also a yellowish liquid, especially rich in immune factors.

Ekanem said: “It is surprising that mothers still believe the milk they produce in the first four days of life is not good for their babies.

“It is a very rich milk which helps the child to grow; it has a natural method of also preventing children from diseases.

“Colostrum is exactly what babies need for the first few days to protect them against infection as well as help keep their bowels soft.

“It is very concentrated with very high levels of proteins.

“So, it is important that the baby takes that milk; any mother who throws the milk away should know that she will never have that quality again after the first four days.

“The child too may not have that quality again after the first four days; it changes, babies who take the milk will definitely do better even in school.

“So, that early milk is very important, mothers should stop throwing it away.

The paediatrician urged mothers to frequently and exclusively breastfeed their babies whenever they demanded for it.

He said that regular breastfeeding was beneficial for the mother as it would help increase the production of breast milk.

Ekanem said breastfeeding should not be at set intervals, but regularly throughout the day and as the baby demanded.

He cautioned mothers against early introduction of solid foods to their babies, saying exclusive breastfeeding should continue for four to six months.

Ekanem said: “The baby’s body is not developed enough to tolerate solid foods before the first four months of age; breast milk provides entirely all the baby needs until that age.’’

He warned mothers to stop applying family tradition on their children wellbeing.

Bayern held at home to lose ground to Dortmund

Bayern Munich leaked a late equaliser in Saturday’s 1-1 home draw to Freiburg to leave them four points adrift of Borussia Dortmund before next weekend’s Bundesliga showdown.

Having laboured to a 2-1 win at fourth-tier part-timers Roedinghausen in the German Cup on Tuesday, Bayern struggled again at the Allianz Arena – exactly a week before they face leaders Dortmund away in a top-of-the-table clash.

Bayern’s star-studded attack needed 80 minutes to break the deadlock when Serge Gnabry dribbled through the defence and struck his shot low into the bottom right-hand corner.

However, Freiburg showed plenty of heart when Lucas Hoeler got in between Bayern’s burly centre-backs Niklas Suele and Jerome Boateng to equalise on 89 minutes and leave Munich head coach Niko Kovac shaking his head in frustration.

There could be more bad news coming for Kovac as Borussia Moenchengladbach can leap-frog Bayern into second if they beat strugglers Fortuna Duesseldorf at home on Sunday.

Dortmund restored their four-point lead over Bayern with a hard-fought 1-0 win at Wolfsburg as club captain Marco Reus headed their first-half winner.

Injuries to Lukasz Piszczek and Marcel Schmelzer meant Dortmund had to reshuffle their defence and struggled to finish their chances.

England winger Jadon Sancho, 18, who has already set up six league goals this season, fired in another superb cross from the left wing which Thomas Delaney headed back towards Reus, who steered the ball inside the post with his head on 28 minutes.

It was Dortmund’s 30th goal in just their 10th league game, but was a far from polished performance from the leaders.

Dortmund striker Paco Alcacer, in his first game back after injury, failed to add to his tally after scoring seven goals in his first four Bundesliga games.

– Nelson shines in rout –
After two huge wins on the road, Bayer Leverkusen, who thrashed Werder Bremen 6-2 last Sunday and hammered Borussia Moenchengladbach 5-0 in the German Cup in mid-week, crashed to a 4-1 defeat at home to Hoffenheim, whose Brazilian striker Joelinton scored twice.

English teenager Reiss Nelson, on loan from Arsenal, was again lethal on the right wing as the 18-year-old claimed his fifth goal in just six Bundesliga games, this time from the edge of the area on 19 minutes.

Leverkusen winger Karim Bellarabi sent Germany head coach Joachim Loew,a reminder of his talent with the equaliser, fired home from a tight angle with half an hour gone.

Loew names his squad for the upcoming games against Russia and the Netherlands next week.

However, the scores were level for just four minutes.

Joelinton headed Hoffenheim back into the lead and then won a penalty, converted by Italian midfielder Vincenzo Grifo on 49 minutes to make it 3-1.

Joelinton capped the rout 17 minutes from time by firing home Grifo’s final pass to keep the pressure on Leverkusen coach Heiko Herrlich.

Elsewhere, Schalke warmed up for Tuesday’s Champions League clash at home to Galatasaray with a 3-1 win over Hanover thanks to goals by Nabil Bentelab, Mark Uth and Breel Embolo.

Uth, who had a clear penalty appeal turned down earlier, won the spit-kick which which Bentaleb converted just after the break, then fired home one of his own on 85 minutes for his first Schalke goal since his summer signing from Hoffenheim.

It finished 2-2 in the Bavarian derby at mid-table Augsburg as strugglers Nuremberg earned a point away from home.

US Sanctions Have Been Unable To Cripple Iran’s Economy, Says Ayatollah

Ayatollah Khamenei

Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said here Saturday that the United States has failed to cripple Iran’s economy by imposing sanctions, official IRNA news agency reported.

The United States has sought “to cripple and hold back Iran’s economy” by resorting to sanctions, “but the outcome is that the country moves broadly towards self-sufficiency,” he said.

“In the past, the Iranians had become accustomed to importing everything, but now, they are used to producing those things,” he said.

The remarks by Iran’s top leader come a day after Washington announced the return of its full-scale sanctions against Tehran on Friday.

A statement issued by the White House on Friday said the sanctions against Iran, to fully take effect on Nov. 5, would be “the toughest” and “unprecedented,” targeting many of the country’s “critical sectors” like energy, shipping, shipbuilding, and finance.

The Late 5: Oshiomhole lambasts Okorocha, Amosun; My relationship with Atiku has nothing to do with 2019 – Tinubu | More stories

These are the stories that drove the conversation today:

The National leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Bola Tinubu has debunked reports that he was working with the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Presidential Candidate, Atiku Abubakar, ahead of the 2019 elections.

Tinubu in reacting to the insinuation by a member of the PDP Board of Trustees, Abba Gana who said the former Lagos governor would work for Atiku because of his long-standing relationship with the former Vice President, said “where Abba Gana got his conviction that he would do so is left only to himself.

“Yes, His Excellency Asiwaju has had a relationship with former Vice President, His Excellency Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, just like he has had with many of other leaders in his political journey,  a statement by his spokesman read.

The crisis in the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), seems far from being over, as the party’s National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole, has again lashed out at Governors Rochas Okorocha and Ibikunle Amosun of Imo and Ogun after the duo renewed attacks on him.

Speaking at a media briefing in Abuja on Friday, Oshiomhole described Okorocha as “an embarrassment to the APC with a failed attempt to elicit his support to build “a political dynasty, adding that Amosun whose actions he said were “undemocratic, immoral and an abuse of power, tried acting like an emperor.

The party had at the deadline of the submission of names of candidates for the 2019 governorship elections in both states, forwarded to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) the names of Senator Hope Uzodinma and Dapo Abiodun as its governorship candidate in Imo and Ogun respectively.

Meanwhile, Uche Nwosu, an acclaimed winner of the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship primary in Imo, has reacted to the emergence of Senator Hope Uzodinma as the party’s governorship candidate in the state, describing the decision by the National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole as a violation of aasubsisting court order and unacceptable.

“I want to assure my teeming supporters that we are on the right course, not even Oshiomhole can stop us, we are the right candidate and we will emerge victorious at the end of the day. I am very confident that I will be the next governor of the state in 2019, he said.

Presidential candidate of the Allied Congress Party of Nigeria (ACPN), Oby Ezekwesili, has slammed the claim by the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and its presidential candidate, that it will reduce fuel price to N90 if elected, saying the claim shows the Atiku Abubakar is ignorant of the economy.

In a statement issued by her campaign group, Ezekwesili who argued that the country ended 2018 with 4 trillion of Fiscal Deficit and as such would find it difficult to slash fuel price, said the claim by the former Vice President and his party, “is a reminder to Nigerians that Atiku’s so-called and questionable business acumen does not qualify him to run this economy.”

“The party promised to crash fuel pump price to N90. This is 419, and it betrays the PDP candidate’s ignorance of how Basic Economics and the solutions Nigeria truly needs,” the statement read.

The Nigerian Army on Saturday laid to rest at Gudu Cemetery in Abuja the remains of late Maj.-Gen. Idris Alkali (Rtd), found by a team of the Army on Search and Rescue Operation.

At the funeral attended by by the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai and Muslims from within and outside the Federal Capital territory, Chief Imam of Abuja National Mosque, Dr Kabir Mohammad, amid tears, commended the Nigerian Army for ensuring a thorough search which led to the recovery of the body of the deceased, who he described as a “national hero.

Describing the situation surrounding the demise and death of Alkali as “very unfortunate,â€ he called on the Federal Government to look into the security situation in the country, stressing that “every Nigerian has the right to live or pass through any part of the country without being harassed or intimidated by anybody or group of people.”

Pittsburgh synagogue members hold first Shabbat since massacre

PITTSBURGH, PA – NOVEMBER 3: Rabbi Chuck Diamond, former Rabbi of the Tree of Life Congregation, conducts a Shabbat prayer vigil Saturday morning in the in front of the Tree of Life Synagogue on November 3, 2018 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Synagogues around Pittsburgh are opening their doors to members of the Tree Of Life congregation that was the target of a mass shooting that left 11 of its members dead on October 27. Jeff Swensen/Getty Images/AFP

With memories of the week-old Pittsburgh synagogue shooting still fresh in the US, more than 200 members of the Tree of Life congregation came together for the first Shabbat service since the deadly assault.

Eleven people died when a gunman burst in on October 27 and opened fire at the synagogue known for its tradition of openness, tolerance and respect.

The gathering at sundown Friday — much larger than on a typical Friday — took place in the Rodef Shalom synagogue in the nearby Shadyside neighborhood, a temporary home to the Tree of Life congregation, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Tree of Life rabbi Jeffrey Myers, a survivor of the shooting, on Saturday described the agony of the past week, but also the determination of his congregation — and of Pittsburgh — to remain strong.

After 97-year-old Rose Mallinger on Friday became the final victim laid to rest, Myers told CNN that he sat down and “cried like a baby. I couldn’t stop.”

“This is the last funeral, and every time I do one, for me, when I chant the memorial prayer, it takes a piece of my soul away.

“I have no more left to give. My tank is empty.”

– ‘We’ll be back’ –
Asked what message he had conveyed Friday to his congregants, he said, “I don’t believe God lets this stuff happen. Humans have a choice. This person made this choice.”

Robert Bowers, who was arrested at the shooting scene, pleaded not guilty on Thursday to federal charges of killing 11 people and wounding six others, including four police officers.

Some of the charges carry the death penalty.

Congregants are working meticulously — and with the respect demanded by Jewish tradition — to clean and restore the Tree of Life building.

“It is a horror,” Myers said. “It is worse than any sci-fi film, because it is real. It is not phony Hollywood.”

Asked by CNN if he could stand to return to the building, Myers said, “Yeah, we’re going to do whatever is the necessary work.”

He vowed: “We’ll be back.”

The rabbi said he took hope in the “outpouring of the community — the sheer immensity of love. It gives me hope, because it reminds me there are so many good people, and this gives me strength to say hate will never win.”

One congregant, Kris Kepler, who missed last Saturday’s service because he was ill, spoke to the Post-Gazette of the importance of Friday’s service.

The preceding days, he said, had “been nothing but funerals and sadness and pain and anguish…

“It felt really good to be with my Tree of Life family” again.

Minimum wage: Governors earn same salaries, yet some argue against paying equal wage – Falana speaks

Activist-lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Femi Falana has said it will be illegal for states to determine what they can pay as minimum wage.

Falana who was guest speaker at a Conference/roundtable organised by the International Press Centre (IPC) to mark this year’s International Day to end Impunity for Crimes against Journalists (IDEI), argued that the minimum wage was deliberately placed in the exclusive legislative list to ensure uniformity in application.

Speaking to reporters at the end of the conference, Falana said “I have heard arguments that every state should be allowed to determine what they can pay. But all the governors earn the same salary apart from allowances and security vote.

“All legislators earn the same no matter where they come from. Every Senator earns about N15million per month. So on the ground of equality, that argument cannot be sustained,” he said.

According to him, “labour and industrial matters are in the exclusive legislative list, deliberately so. Otherwise, you’ll have starvation wages and state government that will not pay salaries at all,â€  adding that the issue of minimum wage is a class matter, as members of the ruling class, regardless of political parties, are one and the same when it comes to addressing the problems of the poor.

Falana who further stressed that the government is quick to talk about inflation, only when it involved addressing the terrible living conditions of the poor, pointed out that the government does not cry about inflation when duty waivers running into hundreds of billions are granted to the rich, when legislators breach the constitution to fix their salaries and allowances by themselves, or when a few rich Nigerians owe billions in unpaid loans.

Rising Demand For Electric Car Fuelling Child Labour In DR Congo – Report

Child Labour In DR Congo

Demand for electric vehicles is fuelling a rise in child labour in cobalt mines in the Democratic Republic of Congo, experts said this week, urging companies to take action as the industry expands, according to News.trust.org reports.

Cobalt is a key component in batteries for electric cars, phones and laptops, and Congo provides more than half of global supply.

Tens of thousands of children as young as six dig for the toxic substance in artisanal mines in the country’s southeast, without protective clothing, rights groups say.

As companies move to secure their supply of cobalt, they should also make a push to improve transparency and labour rights, said U.S.-based advocacy group Enough Project.

“I think it’s a really interesting moment for companies because there is such a spotlight on cobalt right now,” said Annie Callaway, author of the report.

“We’re not right at the beginning of the rise in demand but we’re still pretty early on, where we can make sure that there are systems in place to address these things,” she said.

Congo’s mining ministry said earlier this year it was launching new monitoring and tracing mechanisms to tackle child labour in cobalt and copper production.

Rising demand in the last several years has already led to increases in cobalt production, drawing more people – including children – into the sector, said Siddharth Kara, an author on modern slavery who visited Congo this year.

“Based on what I saw on the ground, right now there is absolutely no way any company in the world could assure its consumers that the cobalt in its products is not tainted by child labour,” Kara told the Thomson Reuters Foundation.

The majority of Congo’s cobalt comes from industrial mines, while about one fifth is mined informally, according to rights group Amnesty International.

Sourcing only from industrial mines would not solve the problem because it is unclear how and when artisanally mined cobalt enters the supply chain, said Callaway of Enough Project.

“One of our recommendations is that companies should actually travel to cobalt mining areas in Congo… to demonstrate their interest in this issue,” Callaway said.

The new Maggi advert valorizes women’s suffering and turns them into multitasking machines

The fact that the Maggi brand has survived against a tumultuous economic climate, introducing new variants of the seasoning into the market and latching onto the zeitgeist of social media only shows its resilience. More of this can be attributed to brand loyalty, inspired from the food television show Maggi Kitchen hosted by the ever-joyful veteran chef Iyabo Lawani around the early 2000s. Over the years, the company has churned out adverts for promotion of new products and granted endorsement deals to pop stars like Tiwa Savage, media personality Toke Makinwa and blogger Sisi Yemmie.

Women are primarily the target audience of Maggi, a brand manifesto built on conservative values and lionizes the traditional Nigerian family. The company just recently launched an advert titled #SheMakesADifference, which isn’t any different from its past catalogue of adverts portraying women as warmly domesticated and caregivers, mythologising Maggi as a secret weapon that binds families over sumptuous foods. But in this blazing age of women empowerment and feminist conversations percolating beyond social media, Maggi’s new campaign falls immensely short.

You’re The Difference We’ve Been Waiting For.👑 💫 #SheMakesADifference

A post shared by MAGGI NIGERIA (@maggi_nigeria) on Oct 30, 2018 at 3:40am PDT

The beginning of the video shows a woman cooking in the kitchen, reaching for Maggi cubes in a jar and for a bit of complexity, she’s rendered into other facets: slayer and a boss lady at her office giving a presentation, then checking Instagram for new recipes and making market errands and ending up back home as a kitchen grandmaster, aiming to please her family as she makes a delightful dish of jollof rice. All this is happening while her husband offers nothing tangible, lurking like a shadow and only revealing himself when the food is served. “I like what I do,â€ she says finally, with a smile, as if to reassure us that her joyful participation in gendered domestic labour won’t make her combust, or push her beyond her endurance and limits.

But we know this is a lie, and that there’s only so much women can take before they crack because they are humans. The advert valorizes women’s suffering and labour, underpinned by gender roles that Maggi has foisted as a mission statement for years. Although allowing women to exist outside of a domestic environment, the advert still prioritises and places more value on the woman-in-the-kitchen/superwoman archetype, the woman who toils and juggles the demands of family life and other responsibilities especially without external help.

#SheMakesADifference has drawn responses on social media, more valorizing and romanticising of women’s unsupported hard work and people suddenly remembering their mothers. But some have called out the advert’s glamourisation of feminine labour, and rightly so. I do not see Maggi, in the future, adjusting its ethos to reflect our current cultural upheaval because the brand is largely patronised by die-hard conservatives. And Maggi knows this, which is why it continues to cater towards the gendered dynamics that makes it thrive.
